Are you ready for Oktoberfest?

If Steins, Pretzel’s and musicians in Lederhosen are your thing, we’ve got you covered this October.

Join What's Occurrin' Rochdale for Oktoberfest 2023 where you can channel the essence of Bavaria in traditional German style - where copious drinking and dancing is a must.

Back in 2019, What's Occurrin' held the first Rochdale Oktoberfest event which sold out in a week! They have now expanded and have events taking place at Todmorden Town Hall, Bury Town Hall and Champness Hall Rochdale on the 13th, 14th and 28th October respectively. The nights are always extremely popular and the talk of the town afterwards.

Dig out your Dirndl or Lederhosen and immerse yourself in the finest Oompah music with a twist from the very talented Jager Maestros Oompah band. Let the comedy front man take you on a night of games and dancing, stuff yourself with bratwurst and pretzels and wash it all down with the finest German beer.

Food and drink partner Lancashire Hospitality (the team behind popular Rochdale venues such as the Flying Horse Hotel and Bombay Brew) will be providing the beer and bratwursts and the pretzels come from a German bakery in Bolton freshly made for the event.

All three fantastic venues will be dressed in the white and blue of Bavaria. These are well and truly top class events that are not to be missed whether you are a seasoned Bierkeller veteran or Oktoberfest virgin.

Dressing up is a must and there will even be prizes for best dressed. Tickets are selling fast and there’s a limited number available here at: whatsoccurrinrochdale.co.uk/tickets

Style: How did you first start out in the music industry?

Dave: My dad was a DJ and then a promoter for 60s and 70s bands - a lot of what he did was at Heywood Civic and those nights have become quite legendary now as he had some massive bands on. I was really into music and heavily involved from the age of about 14 working as a roadie. I’d get picked up from school on a Friday and off to gigs all over the country or flying to Ireland and back Sunday night! So it wasn’t a normal teenage life! I became friends with lots of 60s and 70s bands like The Searchers, Herman's Hermits, The Animals, The Yard Birds, Bay City Rollers, Lieutenant Pigeon – it was very much a circuit and everyone knew each other.

I worked as a roadie until I was about 18, then by pure chance one night I ended up helping my mate out with a mobile disco and we got a load of bookings from that, so I started DJing.

I then moved onto pubs and nightclubs in Heywood which seemed like a natural progression. I learnt my craft in Heywood and I’m dead proud of that. I’m a Heywood lad and back then Heywood had an amazing nightlife.

By the early 2000s there was a really good music scene coming through with the likes of the Arctic Monkeys and the Libertines. So I ended up cutting down on the generic pop scene and finding my feet on the Indie scene. That’s when I started getting a name for myself outside of Heywood which happened very quickly which I’m grateful for. I met the right people by chance, they looked after me and I quickly fit into this Indie music scene that accepted me.

You’ve had a packed summer of gigs and festivals, what’s been the highlight?

Just getting so much work in... I mean, the weather could have been a better! But I feel really lucky. I do always wonder when the year is going to come that I’ve got to get a proper job!

Your positive energy and enthusiasm always keeps a crowd entertained. How does it feel to attract such large audiences?

I was called a "hype man" in a review once and I'd never heard of it but I thought - I'll take that! I still get excited - it's the best feeling in the world seeing hundreds or thousands of people infront of me dancing. Especially being back out after the pandemic and seeing people having a good time. There’s nothing better than looking out now off a stage and seeing people dancing, being happy and making memories, and knowing you’ve helped create that. That’s why I still love it.

Your work as a stadium announcer and DJ at Rochdale Football Club picked up a lot of press interest, even worldwide! Tell us the story...

Yeah, when I started at the club in 2001, most football stadiums were playing whatever was in the charts but Rochdale let me do what I want really. So I started playing The Beatles, Stone Roses, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys and all of a sudden ended up in the national press with people saying the music at Rochdale was brilliant! It did the world of good for me, and for Rochdale as well. And over the years, a lot of other grounds started playing similar music.

Leaving Rochdale AFC after 21 years was a massive decision but it felt like the right time. I had some of the best times of my life at the club. The New York Times got in touch when I left and named me as 'the inventor of British Rock n Roll football' which was humbling.

Dave with Inspiral Carpets at Shepherds Bush Empire, London Dave Sweetmore with Clint Boon and Bez

How did you get into radio?

About ten years ago, Revolution 96.2 wanted an Indie DJ to present a show on a weekend night. I think I did about four months training before they let me have a show. Again, they were really good with me because they let me play Indie classics but also let me introduce new bands and I’m a big supporter of new music. I’d been involved in Radio Manchester for a while as a guest too. I then ended up at Tameside Radio and now host the drivetime show.

Which new artists should we listen out for?

There are so many. But there's one band from Rochdale called The Sprats who I’m getting right behind. They are the first band from Rochdale for a few years that I feel are really making a name for themselves on the Greater Manchester circuit. I just hope people from Rochdale get behind them as well.

Always make sure you see the support bands when you go to gigs… The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys – they were all support bands once. I just think it’s really important to support new music. You never know who your new favourite band is going to be.

The music industry has changed massively since you started out - how do you feel about the changes?

The positives are you can form a band in your garage and everyone around the world can hear your music. But at the same time, it's very disposable and the days of having a record in your hand are gone - you don’t have to queue up for the record shop or at venues for tickets. And more and more young bands are just bringing singles out instead of building up to releasing an album. There's a lot more new music getting heard though.

If you could tour with any band who would it be?

The Beatles!

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

The highlight has been meeting so many of my heroes that have now become friends. I was very fortunate when I was starting out to quickly meet people like Clint Boon from Inspiral Carpets, Bez from Happy Mondays and Mani from The Stone Roses and become friends with them. I still pinch myself. For me it’s become the norm, but I still don’t take it for granted. Earlier this year, the Inspiral Carpets did a comeback tour, and that was quite mad being on a tour bus with a band I used to watch on Top of the Pops!

Favourite album?

Little Man Tate, About What You Know. Pretty much anything The Beatles did. And Oasis, Definitely Maybe. Being a teenager around here when Oasis released that album changed our lives really. They looked like us and sounded like us!

Part of me would like them to so younger people can see them live. Part of me thinks leave it and go down in history. I love the music Noel is bringing out. He’s a genius –he’s probably up there with Lennon and McCartney as one of the most important songwriters ever.

What are your future plans?

Going forward I would like to concentrate on gigs, tours and festivals, working with bands. I’m there as a tour DJ now rather than carrying the equipment! It’s sort of gone full circle. It’s 30 years since I started working in music and when I leave my house to go to work I still get as excited as I did when I was 14. I feel so lucky.

LOOSE, FAILING OR MISSING TEETH? DON'T LIKE DENTURES?

DR ANDREW PARASHCHAK PROVIDES A STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO DENTAL IMPLANTS...

WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?

A dental implant is the most tooth like replacement for a missing tooth. They can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth. The titanium implant is a bit like a screw and is surgically placed in the jawbone, replacing the tooth root, and is attached to a dental crown, bridge or denture depending on your individual needs.

WHO CAN HAVE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Anyone over the age of 18 is eligible for dental implant treatment to restore their smile, provided they are in good general and dental health and have adequate remaining jawbone. Even where bone loss has occurred we have procedures which can help rebuild it. There is no upper age limit for dental implant treatment. In-fact, in patients struggling to eat and speak with loose conventional dentures, implant solutions are life changing.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL PROCESS FOR IMPLANT TREATMENT?

Initially a consultation visit is made where you can discuss your needs and perform a detailed examination of your mouth. We would also take any X rays or other records at this stage. Following a 3D Xray (CBCT scan) taken in house, we would proceed to the surgery.

After a healing period of approximately 3 months, your implant(s) will be restored with a crown, bridge or denture. Treatment is usually completed in around 4 and 12 months depending on complexity.

HOW LONG WILL AN IMPLANT LAST?

You can expect your dental implant solution to survive up to 25 years depending on maintenance of excellent oral hygiene regime, good general health and regular review with your dentist and hygienist. Implants, like teeth need to be maintained, as they can be susceptible to gum disease.

RAINY DAY ACTIVITIES

ROLLER CITY

• Platting Lane, Rochdale

• Free parking opposite the venue at OL11 2LS.

• Prices can be found on the website at rollercityrochdale.com

• The recommended age is 5+

• Food & drink options available - obviously we opted for a slush

Well… it’s been absolutely years since I stepped foot into Roller City. However, last month me and the boy decided to re-discover it and test our skating skills!

There’s disco music and lights and it’s so laid back that you can go as slow or as fast as you like (or dare)! My boy particularly liked it when the staff got the rope out and you had to attempt to limbo under it (I can assure you that I did not attempt this myself).

I also thought it was good that the skate sessions last 2 hours, as this gives you enough time to build up confidence, get faster and also take some breaks (as you’re going to need them… what a work out).

LITTLE PLAY TOWN HEYWOOD

• Market Place, Heywood, OL10 4NL

• Free car parking behind the venue on Longford Street

• Prices and booking at littleplaytownheywood.co.uk

• There is a little cafe inside

Did you know that Heywood has its very own role play centre complete with shop, café, doctors, vets, police station... the list goes on and on!

Set across two floors, there is so much to keep your little ones busy. My little girl spent most of her time peacefully shopping and cooking me food in the cafe, meanwhile the boys caused what can only be described as complete carnage racing around the road (complete with traffic lights and zebra crossings) and performing extremely loud shows in the theatre. What more could you possibly want it your own little town?!

FIREGROUND

• Maclure Road, Rochdale

• Car park around the back of the building at OL11 1DN

• Prices and opening times can be found at: fireground.org.uk

• The Fireground Cafe is on site

There are a lot of different engines to see, from ancient to the present day, and lots of other little artefacts to look at too. There is also interesting information to read about the Great Fire of London and The Blitz. You can also dress up slide down a pole!

My favourite bit (being the history geek I am) is the old Victorian street section (although I am also partial to a bit of dressing up) and the kids favourite bit is the interactive fire engine driving game - where you have to make the correct decisions to save a lady from a flood and a cat from a tree!

SCARECROW FESTIVALS

The start of autumn can only mean one thing… it’s time for the annual Scarecrow Festivals!

First up you’ve got ‘Wardle Scarecrow Festival’, which will run from Saturday 30th September until Sunday 8th October.

Maps featuring all the scarecrows will then be available at the following places -

Craft Cottage, East St (open Thurs/Fri 10-4 and Sat 10-2)

Charlie’s Coffee & Cakes, Ramsden Rd (open Weds-Sat 9-3)

Wardle News, Birch Road (open Mon-Sat 7-8 and Sun 8-8)

Tattersalls Bakery (Open Mon-Fri 8-4 & Sat 8-12:30)

Maps are priced at £1 each, with all proceeds going to the wonderful Jolly Josh charity

If the weather is kind, then there will also be kids crafts available to do outside Craft Cottage on Saturday 30th September and Saturday 7th October (10-2).

This is always such a cute day out, wandering around the village wondering what you will come across next!

The photos are entries from previous years… so who knows who or what you may find this year!

Next up you’ve got ‘Littleborough Scarecrow Festival’, which will run from Saturday 14th October until Saturday 28th October

Maps showing the location of all the scarecrows will be available at the following places -

The King William pub, Shore (open Weds-Thurs 5-10:30, Fri 12-11 and Sat/Sun 12-10:30)

Sainsburys Local, Hare Hill Road (open 7 days 7-11)

Yankee Heaven, Canal Street (open Mon-Thurs 10-5, Fri/Sat 10-7 and Sun 11-4)

Cherry Tree Café, the Coach House (open Mon-Sat 9-4)

Co-op Food, Station Road (open Mon-Sat 6-10 & Sun 11-5)

Maps will be free, but there is a suggested donation of £1, as the team are hoping to raise money for the amazing Springhill Hospice.

This year there will even be a launch party to kick off the scarecrow festival. This will take place on Saturday 14th October at Littleborough Cricket Club between 1pm and 4pm, and will include a DJ, dancing, musical games, colouring, crafts and cookie decorating, as well as stalls, a raffle and a musical tractor. The Mayor of Rochdale will also be there to judge the best dressed scarecrows.

Another lovely trail to enjoy! This one falls during half term… so it is definitely an activity to occupy the kids during the school holidays!

Hampton by Hilton Hotel opens in Rochdale Town Centre

A new 146-room Hampton by Hilton Hotel has opened in Rochdale town centre.

Located next to the Rochdale Riverside shopping and leisure development, the hotel features a state-of-the-art fitness centre, complete with Peloton bikes, and a food and drinks offering, which will be housed in the stylish lobby area.

The hotel contains bright, modern guestrooms, high speed wi-fi and the brand’s signature complimentary hot breakfast.

The new opening is the global brand’s first offering in Rochdale, and it will be operated by one of the UK’s leading hotel management companies, Legacy Hotels & Resorts.

Councillor Danny Meredith, cabinet member for housing and regeneration at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Bringing a huge global name like Hampton by Hilton to Rochdale for the first time is another major step forward in our ongoing regeneration programme and demonstrates the level of high-quality development that is being created here. The hotel looks incredible and it’s a really strong addition to Rochdale’s rapidly changing town centre.”

The new hotel is part of the £65m Upperbanks development, which is being delivered by Rochdale Development Agency (RDA) on behalf of Rochdale Borough Council. The scheme also includes 242 new high-quality rental apartments, all with balconies, alongside communal gardens, and seating areas.

Constructed by Willmott Dixon, the scheme has engaged more than 1,300 young people in Rochdale borough and created 390 weeks of apprenticeships. In total, 50 per cent of the project spend was invested with businesses based within 20 miles of the site.

The Upperbanks development has transformed a former brownfield site as part of the wider regeneration of Rochdale town centre, which includes the re-opening of the River Roch, the opening of the Rochdale Riverside retail and leisure development and the restoration of grade I listed Rochdale Town Hall, which will reopen in early 2024.

Graham Dodd, Managing Director Hilton Development UK & Ireland said:

“Regeneration led town centres, like Rochdale, which have benefited from large scale investment, are prime sites for the Hampton by Hilton brand as it continues its expansion. The proximity of the hotel to the brand-new retail and leisure development, and the wider town centre, will be a real draw for guests and we look forward to welcoming them to this fantastic new property.”

Andy Townsend, Chief Executive Officer at Legacy Hotels & Resorts said:

“We’re delighted to have opened the doors in Rochdale today to our third Hampton by Hilton Hotel in the UK. There’s a real market for a new high-quality hotel to complement the wider hospitality offering in the borough and create more choice and variety for people looking to stay in the area. We have an exceptional team in place, many of whom are Rochdale residents, and they will be led by general manager, Ashleigh Thompson, who herself hails from Littleborough.”

Upperbanks has attracted more than £20m of external funding, including more than £17m from the government’s Future High Streets Fund and over £3m from the GMCA’s (Greater Manchester Combined Authority) Brownfield Development Fund.

10 important reasons to make your Will

Making a Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney is something many of us know we should do but often put it off for one reason or another. Rochdale’s very own Will Lady, Fiona Daly, is helping local people and their families to have peace of mind by simplifying the process. Since launching her client focused business in February 2021, Fiona has gained over 80 Google five star reviews due to the fantastic service she provides.

Here, Fiona provides 10 compelling reasons why having a Will and keeping it up to date is essential:

1. Outline your wishes: A Will allows you to specify how your assets should be distributed among your beneficiaries, ensuring that your wishes are honoured.

2. Choose who will take care of your children: If you have children under 18, a Will lets you choose a guardian to take care of them if you and their other parent are unable to do so. This is often difficult for parents to think about but you are the best person to make that decision, rather than the courts.

3. Lessen the potential for family disputes: When you die without a Will, dividing up your assets can sadly sometimes lead to squabbles and arguments amongst those you leave behind when an estranged spouse or family member inherits from you.

4. Minimise inheritance tax: With careful planning, a Will can help minimise the tax burden on your estate, allowing more of your assets to go to your loved ones.

5. Protect unmarried partners and children from previous relationships: if you’re in a long-term unmarried relationship or have children with a previous partner, a Will is essential to ensure that they are protected and inherit your assets.

6. Choose an Executor: You can appoint a trusted individual to be the executor of your estate, responsible for carrying out your wishes and settling your affairs.

7. Support your favourite causes: Many people want to leave a positive impact on the world after they pass. If you have a favourite charity or cause, a Will allows you to leave a legacy by including them as a beneficiary.

8. Provide a home for your pets: You can name a beneficiary for your pet, leaving them to a trusted friend or family member. You can ask that person to act as a guardian for your pet, and even leave them funds to provide for your pet’s care.

9. Provide funeral instructions: You may not want to think about your own funeral. But if you do think about it now, and leave instructions with your will, you can lessen the burden on your loved ones after you pass.

10. Peace of mind: While many people postpone making a Will, it's essential to remember that life is unpredictable, and having a Will in place can alleviate stress and uncertainty for your family during a difficult time. Creating a Will provides peace of mind, knowing that your loved ones will be taken care of, and your wishes will be respected.

Fiona worked as a solicitor for 20 years and is a member of The Society of Will Writers. Her jargon-free, straightforward process is completed in a matter of weeks in your own home with flexible appointments including daytime, evenings and weekends. Are you ready to make your Will? What's On in the Arts

As our town centre continues its exciting development we are looking forward to the reopening of the Town Hall and awaiting the redevelopment of Touchstones. We continue to have high class music in our iconic town centre parish churches, stimulating talks, spooky and informative ghost walks plus a new podcast!

The redevelopment of Touchstones, Rochdale’s arts and heritage venue is progressing, with a planning application now submitted.

The building is set to be transformed into a creative and cultural hub with new flexible performance and production spaces for artists, improved areas for training, live events, and exhibitions. The plans also include a new dining space integrating the borough’s collections on the theme of food heritage, co-created with Rochdale’s diverse communities. There will be vital works to improve accessibility and sustainability. If approved, work is due to commence at the beginning of 2024.

The plans are part of an £8.5 million investment into arts and culture in the borough over the next three years thanks to Arts Council England and Department for Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) funding. In addition to Touchstones, Heywood Civic Centre will receive a major makeover.

The Touchstones project forms a key part of the establishment of a creative district in Rochdale town centre, which includes the refurbishment of Rochdale Town Hall and the new town hall square, the Fire Up digital and creative co-working space, new artist workspaces on Richard Street as well as new public art, signage, and marketing.

Councillor Sue Smith, cabinet member for communities and co-operation at Rochdale Borough Council said: “We know Touchstones is a much-loved space, but it has a great deal more potential than is currently being realised and is in much need of updating. This investment will help to make much more of the asset we already have, creating more opportunities for local people and visitors from across the region to participate in and enjoy culture here.”

What's On Stage

Once

With a cast of exceptionally talented musicians, Whitworth Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society present the Greater Manchester premiere of "Once", at The Curtain Theatre, Rochdale from 3rd - 7th October 2023.

From the very first note, Once draws you in and never lets go. This emotionally captivating musical is the only show to have music that won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Olivier Award and a Tony Award.

Once tells the tale of a downtrodden Dublin busker who's about to give up on his dream when a beautiful Czech woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights... but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance.

High School Musical

Heywood Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society presents Disney's High School Musical on stage at Middleton Arena, 17 - 21 October 2023.

Troy, Gabriella and the students of East High must deal with issues of first love, friends and family while balancing their classes and extracurricular activities.

It's the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations and look forward to the new year. Basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy, discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High.

They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical that is being led by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the "status quo," Troy and Gabriella's alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well.

Jack & The Beanstalk

Adapted by Enda Walsh from the 2006 film of the same name, Once's film soundtrack, written by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, makes up the majority of the musical's score, including the Academy Award winning "Falling Slowly." Musicians perform live onstage in this heart rendering and visually moving piece of theatre.

This achingly beautiful, joyously uplifting show strikes an unforgettable chord in audiences and speaks to the power of music to connect us all.

Directed by Zac Grenier, with Musical Direction by Chris Addington and choreography by Jenya Robinson, a show like this only comes around Once.

Bluebird Care Rochdale celebrate 5 remarkable years

Bluebird Care Rochdale recently celebrated their 5th successful year, having become an integral part of the Rochdale community.

She's like a bag of gold.

Joint Owner & Director, Beryl Keogh commented: "What a five years it's been! A pandemic, Brexit, and four Prime Ministers hasn’t stopped our growth or search for excellence."

Let's take a look at some of the key points from their journey over the last 5 years:

RECOGNITION AND REPUTATION:

Most recently, Bluebird Care Rochdale achieved recognition as a top 20 provider across 1140 providers in the North West on the care review site homecare.co.uk.

Beryl highlighted the importance of this recognition, especially during challenging times: "This is a huge achievement and testament to the quality of service we provide. The site verifies all reviews and only publishes those from actual customers or their families, adding further credibility to our reputation".

TRANSPARENCY AND COLLABORATION:

Bluebird Care Rochdale use an online portal to collaborate with family members of their customers which is proving extremely popular. This approach allows for complete visibility into visit times and care notes, which is crucial for building trust and keeping the customers at the heart of the company. This level of engagement undoubtedly enhances the customers' family peace of mind and reassures them that their loved ones are receiving the best care and the daughter of one customer was even kind enough to create a video review that highlighted this platform.

As part of the Mayoral visit and anniversary celebration the owners bought vouchers from local businesses as a thank you to their employees. The team already benefit from the best pay locally and enrolment onto an Employer Assistance Programme where they are able to access resources such as confidential counselling, support and debt advice, providing a boost to staff wellness.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS:

The dedication to building relationships throughout the customer journey goes beyond just providing care. Celebrating special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries shows that the see their customers as individuals with unique lives and experiences. This personal touch creates a strong emotional connection and makes their presence meaningful beyond the basic care delivery services.

Bluebird Care Rochdale are close supporters of local causes too, from Springhill Hospice, to Rochdale AFC Community Trust and the wider Military Veteran cohort.

It's clear that Bluebird Care Rochdale has achieved some remarkable milestones and has built a strong foundation for success. The commitment to transparency, collaboration, and openness sets them apart and has earned them deserved recognition. Here's to the next five years!

Care in your home, just as you like it.

TEAM WORK:

You love your home and you feel safe there. Needing additional support shouldn’t change that.

Focusing on looking after the team has always been a top priority for Bluebird Care Rochdale.

Beryl commented: "Happy employees are more likely to provide better service, which in turn contributes to the overall success of the business."

With our well-trusted care service, you can remain at home surrounded by loved ones and beloved pets and still enjoy your home, garden and community.

You may be in a situation where you need an extra pair of hands to help with daily chores, or you may have complex needs that require more dedicated care. We build our care packages around you and your individual needs which means that you and your family can rest assured you’ll receive care and support exactly as you need. Our care ranges from a 30-minute daily visit through to full Live-in care.

During his visit to their offices to celebrate their 5th anniversary, Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Mike Holly commented on what an amazing group of people Bluebird Care Rochdale had in their team.

More detailed information on live-in care can be found at: bluebirdcare.co.uk/live-in-care

THE END OF THE WAR OF THE ROSES!

The Calder Valley Line Community Rail Partnership

The Calder Valley railway line from Manchester Victoria to Leeds runs through the borough of Rochdale with five stations along the route, namely Mills Hill, Castleton, Rochdale, Smithy Bridge and Littleborough. After leaving Littleborough, the line continues through the borough of Calderdale in West Yorkshire, stopping at Walsden, Todmorden and Hebden Bridge, before dividing into two routes just after Sowerby Bridge. At this point, one arm goes through Halifax and Bradford before reaching Leeds, while the more southern arm calls at Brighouse and Dewsbury before itself reaching Leeds.

Along with the Rochdale Canal, the Calder Valley Line was at the heart of the industrial and economic development of Rochdale. Unlike the canal, the railway line is used by millions of residents, commuters, students and visitors each year to connect our borough with other parts of Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire and beyond.

Although the Calder Valley Line reached Rochdale as far back as 1839 with stations opening at Castleton

(1839), Smithy Bridge (1868) and Littleborough (1839), history has not always been kind to the route. Around - and after - the Beeching era in the 1960s, goods yards and sidings disappeared at Rochdale and Littleborough, Smithy Bridge station was closed for 25 years and station buildings in the borough were closed or demolished. Unsurprisingly, passenger numbers declined as car usage increased.

Things started looking up in 1985 when Greater Manchester Transport Executive (now Transport for Greater Manchester) opened “temporary experimental stations” at Mills Hill and Smithy Bridge. Both stations have been huge successes, taking thousands of car journeys each year off our crowded roads. In two years time, both stations will celebrate their 40th birthdays!

More recently, station friends groups have been formed at Castleton and Littleborough where volunteers look after their stations with gardening, litter picking, education work and campaigns for better waiting facilities and train services.

Just under a decade ago, these two station friends groups raised the idea of a community rail partnership (or CRP) along the Calder Valley Line, keen to link up with their station friends groups further up the line in Calderdale. A steering group was set up which includes representatives of both councils, station friends groups and rail user groups and the train operating company, Northern.

In March 2022 Karen Hornby was appointed as the Calder Valley Line's community rail officer and she has been busy ever since building relationships with station friends groups and communities along the line. I caught up with Karen recently and asked her a few questions:

| Rochdale Style 26

Richard: Tell me about your background in the rail industry...

Karen: I started in the rail industry when Railtrack was set up back in 1994. I have worked in freight, performance and customer service. I retired in February 2022 after a 28 year rail career which saw me manage Manchester Piccadilly Station, become Area Manager Merseyside and then Head of Performance and Customer Relationship which included managing the teams of Manchester Piccadilly, London Euston, Birmingham New Street and Liverpool Lime Street stations. Over the last twelve months since taking up the role of Community Rail Officer, I have been appointed to the Board of Directors of Community Rail Network.

What attracted you to the post of Community Rail Officer?

I have always held community rail close to my heart, I managed the Network Rail Community Rail team and liked to get involved as much as I could. When I decided to retire last year I wasn't going to do anything except play lots of golf and go on holiday as much as I could. However, I became aware of this part-time position and thought how lovely it would be to stay involved in community rail and have the opportunity to work with local communities, schools, colleges and promote the use of rail.

What exactly is Community Rail?

Community rail is a growing grassroots movement made up of community rail partnerships and groups across Britain. They engage communities and help people get the most from their railways, promoting social inclusion and sustainable travel, working alongside train operators to bring about improvements and and bringing stations back to life. Our key priorities are: providing a voice for the community, promoting sustainable and healthy travel, bringing communities together, supporting diversity and inclusion and supporting social and economic development.”

What have you achieved to date and what are your plans for the Calder Valley Line CRP?

We have published a prospectus, designed and launched our new webpage and published a Calder Valley attractions booklet and walks map to encourage people to travel by train to all our local attractions and experience the brilliant walks we have. We have also taken a number of families on the train to visit Eureka in Halifax, something that most of the families we have worked with would never have been able to do. We have delivered a new community space at Rochdale Station along with artwork at the bottom of the steps to the disused platform where Rochdale Council plan to open a Platform Park for the local community. We have established a good working relationship with Rochdale Hornets and will be involved with their health and well-being project, alongside Network Rail's rail safety promotion. Future plans are to install community noticeboards at all our stations, allowing us to promote local events. We have also been working with a local historian to develop an App about the history of the line. We want to work with local schools and communities to encourage the use of rail travel. We want people to use the train rather than get in their car. There's so many beautiful places to visit on our line and canal walks spanning from Mills Hill to Low Moor.

What do you like most about your role as Community Rail Officer ?

I love what I'm doing, I'm living my best life doing something that I absolutely love, working with local communities and delivering on projects that actually make a difference.

With thanks to Karen Hornby and Friends of Castleton and Littleborough Stations Find out more on the website: caldervalleylinecrp.com

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE NEWS & EVENTS

SPRINGHILL'S NEW DEMENTIA GARDEN

In June, Springhill Hospice was incredibly proud to launch its brand new, fantastic Dementia Garden - created specifically for patients with dementia, in order for them to enjoy an outside space that suits their specific needs. With sensory areas, kinetic sand, and specially selected plants to entice all the senses, the launch of the garden was a huge success; with patients and loved ones getting to make the most of the new space in the sunshine.

If you or a loved one need any more information on the Dementia services Springhill offers, please visit: www.springhill.org.uk/dementia

STEPH & JANET GROWING FOR SPRINGHILL

Springhill Hospice's Head gardener Michelle was delighted to welcome the wonderful Steph and Janet from The Bridge Centre to the hospice recently for a full garden tour.

Steph is the green-fingered volunteer who works tirelessly on creating stock for the annual plant sale held in June, with all proceeds going to Springhill Hospice. This year it was coupled with an indoor car tabletop sale organised by centre manager Janet, and combined, their fundraising raised an amazing £2258.31. The Hospice team would like to say a huge thanks to Steph, Janet and all the team at the Bridge Centre for such fantastic fundraising and support!

LIGHT UP A LIFE

During Springhill’s Light up a Life campaign in December, the Hospice trees will shine brightly with hundreds of lights, each in memory of those we love.

With a donation to Light up a Life, you will receive a personalised card displaying the name of your loved one, and you will also have the opportunity to personalise a Light up a Life star that can be hung on your Christmas Tree at home, or the Christmas Trees at Springhill Hospice.

All dedications will appear in our Book of Lights which will be displayed at the services and virtually on the Hospice website.

CHRISTMAS FAIR

Springhill are so excited to be able to welcome back their much loved Christmas Fair on Sunday 26th November, 1-3pm at Kingsway Park High School.

You will be able to browse stalls selling everything from cards to candles, baubles to chocolates and jewellery to jigsaws. Scrumptious festive food and drinks will also be available.

The Fair will showcase all Springhill’s well known favourites including Santa’s Grotto, plus new stalls, all offering Christmas gifts galore; tombolas, crafts, raffles, games and toys.

LOCAL MUSIC HISTORY: BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST

The satellite towns of Greater Manchester – such as Rochdale, Oldham, Bury, Bolton and Stockport – have never been on the main British pop and rock tour itineraries. They were (and are) simply too close to Manchester to be able to hold their own and attract large audiences. Notable exceptions exist; in 1958 Buddy Holly came to Wigan, but surprisingly not to Manchester. Bolton Odeon was occasionally on the rock 'n' roll and pop touring circuit. Big names rarely came to Rochdale.

As I have mentioned before in Style Magazine, Champness Hall on Drake Street did attract some big names in rock music in the 1970s such as Incredible String Band, Thin Lizzy, Quintessence and Barclay James Harvest. Barclay James Harvest were part of the 1970s British progressive rock scene and, despite an eventful history, are still going strong.

Originally from Oldham, the band changed its name to Barclay James Harvest in 1967 and rehearsed in Preston House, formerly a 16th century Inn in Saddleworth. The line-up consisted of John Lees (guitar, vocals), Les Holroyd (bass, vocals), “Woolly” Woolstenholme (keyboards, vocals) and Mel Pritchard (drums). In 1968 the band signed to EMI Records and released their debut single, Early Morning.

The following year Barclay James Harvest moved across to EMI's new progressive label, Harvest. They were one of the first rock bands to regularly feature a full orchestra when performing live shows. This type of concert has become so widespread in recent years – names too numerous to mention- that many people forget these local pioneers were making a successful rock/classical fusion from their early days.

Three years later, Barclay James Harvest came to Rochdale's Champness Hall on August 21st 1973. 1973 had been an eventful year for Barclay James Harvest; they had toured the UK in the spring, played some European dates and, controversially, toured apartheid South Africa. The band had also played support to Ten Years After at London's Alexandra Palace at the beginning of August.

Barclay James Harvest were at something of a crossroads. They had been signed to EMI's progressive imprint Harvest for four years, releasing an album each year. While their label mates, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple thrived and sold millions of records, Barclay James Harvest were very much in the second division. Earlier in the year the band had issued a single, Rock And Roll Woman; this was their final release for Harvest.

Champness Hall was about the nearest venue that Barclay James Harvest had to a home-town gig, being only a few miles from their native Oldham. The support band were Gryphon, a band known for using medieval instruments. It was a one-off concert just a few days after the headliners had played the Bilzen Festival in Belgium.

1974 brought a new record label for Barclay James Harvest, signing to the Polydor label. They also changed their management, joining Harvey Lisberg's Kennedy Street Enterprises who already represented 10cc. Suddenly, things started to happen; a new studio album Everybody Is Everybody Else attracted a lot of attention and, just six months later, that 1970's rock staple, a double live album was the band's first UK chart entry.

Strings were central to the Barclay James Harvest's sound, whether from a real orchestra or from a keyboard called a Mellotron which reproduced the sounds of orchestral instruments. If you listen to the Beatles' Strawberry Fields Forever, early Genesis albums and much of the Moody Blues' output, you will hear the sounds of a Mellotron. This was widely used before samplers and electronic keyboards were available.

| Rochdale Style 36

Two other Barclay James Harvest songs stand out for me; one called Titles is a composition based almost entirely of Beatles' song titles. It is very cleverly thought out and effective with a chorus going “Lady Madonna, let it be..”! Hymn - as the title suggests – is a Christian inspired song which starts with just acoustic guitar and short verses. The refrain which starts: “Jesus came down from heaven to earth...” is instantly memorable. It builds and builds, becoming a powerful anthem. Unsurprisingly, the song became a favourite with audiences all around the world. I remember hearing the song when it was first released and being transfixed by it.

Try and listen to these songs on streaming services or watch old videos on YouTube. If the band are a new name to some Style readers, you might be pleasantly surprised. The band have a delicate artistry which has not dated anything like as much as many of their “prog” contemporaries. If - like this writer - you still prefer CDs, try Child Of The Universe- The Essential Collection, a two-disc set that contains many of the band's best songs.

Many British rock bands found loyal audiences in mainland Europe, not least in Germany and Barclay James Harvest were no exception. In 1980 the band played a free concert on the steps of the Reichstag in West Berlin in front of no less than 175,000 people, just yards away from the Berlin Wall. The live recording of the event, Concert For The People was released the following year and became their highest ever British chart placing. Seven years later, the band played East Berlin's Treptower Park which also became a live album, Glasnost.

Whatever happened to the band? Sadly, two of the four original members have died – Mel Pritchard (d. 2004) and Woolly Wolstenholme (d. 2010). The band had already split in two – this is something of an occupational hazard in British rock and pop – other examples include UB40, The Searchers, The Beat and Yes. John Lees's Barclay James Harvest and Barclay James Harvest featuring Les Holroyd now have their own followings.

Singer and guitarist, John Lees could be found a few years ago working at an Oldham secondary school as a music and ICT technician. On his final day at the school, before John's return to touring, he performed a version of Hymn in a special assembly accompanied by members of the school choir. It seems that many of the school community had had no idea that a famous rock musician had been working amongst them!

It is an unbelievable half a century since Barclay James Harvest played in Rochdale. Both versions of the band are still active and playing concerts and festivals, especially in Europe where they remain incredibly popular. John Lees is now 76 years old and Les Holroyd a year younger. Did YOU see them (when they – and probably you -were in their 20's) at Champness Hall in 1973?

Explore the exciting world of T-Levels

Hopwood Hall College and University Centre is leading the way when it comes to the increasingly popular T-Levels.

Ahead of its upcoming Open Events, the college –which has campuses in Middleton and Rochdale – is celebrating the amazing success it’s had when offering these qualifications. In the last academic year, 22% of the country’s top T-Level grades were impressively achieved by students at Hopwood Hall.

This is the result of a number of factors, including excellent facilities, expert tutors and fantastic employer partnerships. The latter allows learners to be able to work with reputable businesses on a 315-hour work placement, which is a key part of studying a T-Level.

One of the students who was celebrating on results day was 18-year-old Ben Hamlin, who completed the T-Level in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction. The former St Anne’s Academy pupil is now embarking on a degree apprenticeship in Building Services with BES Ltd.

Fellow student Nathan Ashurst, who joined the college from Falinge Park High School, was thrilled with his grade in the T-Level in Education and Childcare.

The course allowed him to quickly get the ball rolling with his career after securing a role as an apprentice Disability Football Coach with Rochdale AFC Community Trust.

Meanwhile, course mate Molly Scott-Smith used her T-Level to earn a place studying a degree in Primary Education at York St John University.

Hopwood Hall Open Events will be held on Saturday, October 7 from 10am-2pm and Thursday, October 19 from 4:30pm-7pm.

TOP 10 BEAUTY TIPS FOR AUTUMN/WINTER

As the seasons change from autumn to winter, it's essential to adjust your beauty routine to adapt to the colder, drier weather. Here are the top ten beauty tips to help you stay radiant and healthy during the autumn and winter months:

1. Hydration is Key: The cold air can dehydrate your skin, so make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated from the inside out. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day.

2. Moisturize Daily: Invest in a richer, hydrating moisturiser to combat dry skin. Apply it twice a day, focusing on areas prone to dryness, like your face, hands, and feet.

3. Exfoliate Gently: Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, allowing moisturisers to penetrate better. However, opt for gentle exfoliants to avoid over-drying your skin. Once or twice a week is usually sufficient.

4. Protect Your Lips: Keep your lips soft and kissable by using a nourishing lip balm with SPF to shield them from harsh UV rays and cold winds.

5. Warm Showers, Not Hot: While it's tempting to take hot showers in cold weather, they can strip your skin of essential oils. Opt for warm showers and use a mild, moisturising body wash.

6. Sunscreen is Still Important: Don't skip sunscreen just because it's cold outside. UV rays are still present, and they can damage your skin, even on cloudy days.

7. Invest in a Humidifier: Indoor heating can make the air very dry. A humidifier adds moisture to your home, which helps prevent your skin from drying out.

8. Nourish Your Hair: Winter can wreak havoc on your hair, making it dry and brittle. Use a hydrating conditioner and consider using a hair mask once a week to keep your locks healthy.

9. Switch to Cream Makeup: Swap out powder-based makeup for cream formulas in the colder months. Cream makeup products provide a more hydrating and dewy finish.

10. Warm Up with Herbal Teas: Sipping on herbal teas like chamomile or ginger can help keep you warm and provide antioxidants that are good for your skin.

Contact The Retreat on 01706 868898 for personalised advice and product recommendations to keep your skin glowing and healthy throughout the autumn and winter seasons.

AWARDS CEREMONY FOR THE YOUNG KHADIMS

An awards ceremony was held for the Young Khadims voluntary group on Saturday 26 August as a reward for their hard work over the previous few months.

The Young Khadims was launched in December 2022, with members’ ages ranging from 14-23. Since the launch, the group has carried out events such as feeding the homeless, a sleepover at a mosque, a funeral and educational workshop, and youth and community iftars.

A Khadim means "one who serves"; the group's name is derived from the Arabic word khimah which means service hence their motto - "to selflessly serve society".

The ceremony started with a recitation of the Holy Quran by Qari Abu Waleed (Imam of Madina Institute in Oldham) before Syed Meher, of Bradford, and Afzal Naqshbandi, of Rochdale, presented some Islamic poetry and nasheeds [vocal music].

Youth ambassador Mohammed Ali Islam, of Bradford, expressed his gratitude and amazement to see youngsters as young as 14 being involved in the community and described the volunteers as "community ambassadors".

Imam Irfan Chishti, of Chishtiah Mosque in Rochdale, gave a strong reminder to the volunteers about sincerity being a priority in this line of work, whilst Imam Habib Sialvi, of Oldham, was 'delighted' to see such positive work going on within the borough and commended the youngsters for providing a positive image for local youths.

Jamal Aziz, of The Young Khadims, said: "It was great to see many of the volunteers under one roof after a while especially during the summer holidays which is a very busy period and we were very fortunate to have guests join us locally as well as from Oldham and Bradford to participate in the ceremony.

"I express my gratitude to all of the volunteers as whatever we have achieved is through a joint effort.

"Regardless of when or where they have taken part, they have all been actively involved in making positive changes and they should all be very proud of themselves for being the handful of youngsters in today’s day and age that took the initiative to do khidmah (Service)."

CHARITIES CALL ON ROCHDALE'S BIG RACE RUNNERS

Charities across the region are set to benefit from Williams BMW Rochdale Half Marathon, 10K and Fun Run, and organisers are encouraging runners and their supporters to help raise as much as possible when the event returns on Sunday 8 October.

Official charities this year are Springhill Hospice, Jolly Josh and Maggie’s, but with recent years being challenging for all who rely on fundraising, this year’s support is going to be more important than ever.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for equity, safety and reform at Rochdale Borough Council said: “We’re encouraging people to come forward and run for charity so please do sign up for a race if you haven’t already. Whether it’s our one mile, 10K or the half, we all have the potential to raise vital cash for really deserving causes. Every pound makes a difference and entrants are welcome to run for Springhill, Jolly Josh, Maggie’s or another of their choice. Running for charity does give you that extra motivation, both on the day and during training. Your efforts make a real difference to the charity you are helping and for many it can be a way to say thank you on behalf of a charity that may have assisted a member of your family or a friend.”

With more than 700 runners already registered for places, Rochdale Borough Council and title sponsor Williams BMW is asking those registered and everyone yet to sign-up, to consider running in aid of a good cause.

Scott Cunningham, head of business at Williams Rochdale BMW, said: “We know the impact that the pandemic has had on charity fundraising so hopefully we can encourage more to run for a good cause. Exercise is proven to benefit mental health and this event is the perfect opportunity to lace up your running shoes and enjoy a fantastic morning out.”

If you’re thinking about raising money for the official charities visit rochdale.gov.uk/run where you can find out more including how to set up your fundraising page and book your place.

FUNDRAISING FOR MACMILLAN DEFIBRILLATOR AT HEALEY DELI

Norden Bowling & Social Club hosted an Afternoon Tea at the end of August in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support, raising an incredible £1407.35 for the charity.

The club would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in making this event a wonderful success.

This year, Healey Deli set themselves a challenge to raise £1400 to buy a defibrillator.

Andy and Nicky (and the Healey Deli Team) would like to thank all the local people and businesses that have made donations and supported their fundraising efforts. The defibrillator is now proudly on the wall at the side of the Deli (at the Healey Corner entrance to Healey Dell).

Special thanks go to the family of the late Robert Pews, who contributed a considerable amount of money toward the defibrillator in his memory. The defibrillator is now installed and registered. It is available to use at any time, 24 hours a day. In an emergency users will be directed by the emergency services on how to access it.

Healey Deli received support from Community Defibs for Rossendale.

SNAP UP YOUR CHANCE TO JOIN ROCHDALE & DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB

Rochdale & District Camera Club is a friendly group of photographers who meet every Tuesday evening at 8pm at Syke Methodist Church OL12 9TF.

The club welcomes visitors and potential new members to join them and enjoy a chat with a brew and a biscuit at any of their meetings. They have a schedule of interesting activities and presentations throughout the year.

Over the summer, club members went on several walks around the town, capturing images and memories while practising new skills with their cameras (any camera will do!).

A few of the recent evenings out have included Littleborough, Rochdale Town Centre, Healey Dell, Blackstone Edge, Heptonstall, Summit, St Edmund's Church.

If you’d like to get more out of your camera or if you’d just like to meet some other camera enthusiasts, get in touch.

THOUSANDS 'FEEL GOOD' AT FAMILY PICNICS

Four days of family fun descended on Heywood, Middleton, Littleborough and Rochdale during the summer as the new Feel Good Family Picnic was staged for the first time.

Organised by the council team behind Rochdale Feel Good Festival, over 9,500 people attended events in Queen’s Park, Limefield Playing Fields, Hare Hill Park and Falinge Park as the spaces were transformed into a busy spectacle of theatre, puppetry, circus, dance, storytelling, music and more. There were over 20 free different attractions each day, including live performances, music, sports and shows for children of all ages.

The mayor councillor Mike Holly who attended the event in Middleton said it was wonderful:

“A good time was had by all and it was great to see our parks so busy. I’d like to say a big thank you to all the artists who took part and also the friends groups and volunteers who supported these events and our parks all year round. The Feel Good Family Picnic was a resounding success and had a real sense of community spirit which was fantastic to see.”

Each day as visitors tucked into their picnic, a carnival procession travelled around the park led by carnival arts company Global Grooves, featuring giant puppets, costumes, funky drumbeats, flags and dance.

Music was performed by Flat Cap Brass, The Ski Band and Northern Dholis; who played traditional Indian drums.

Outdoor shows were staged to packed audiences including ‘Do what your mamma told ya’ by Just More Productions, a comedy circus show and ‘FLOOD’ by Theatre Temoin which used circus, music and acrobatics to show how our coastline and communities have been effected by climate change.

The storytelling tent was very busy with performances every day including mesmerising Gav Cross who presented his hilarious ‘Twisted Tales for Terrible Children’ show.

Colour the Clouds Theatre Company presented two shows - at Rochdale and Middleton it was BUZZ – the story of a young worker bee who doesn’t think what she does really matters, and then in Littleborough and Heywood the premier of Pip’s Garden – an interactive story about a girl who finds herself with a vegetable patch but no idea how to grow anything.

Rochdale’s M6 Theatre performed their brilliant play ‘The Street Where I Live’ and Skylight Circus Arts present a breath-taking aerial circus display featuring a host of daring acrobatics and more as well as hosting workshops to give an introduction to circus skills.

The council wanted the event to reduce its impact on the environment as well as showing visitors ways to reduce their carbon footprint, save energy and be kinder to our planet so there were lots of sustainable activities to see and try.

You can view photos from the event and leave your feedback at rochdale.gov.uk/familypicnic
