ith the leaves starting to change colour and the thermostat dropping slowly by the day, we’re opting to introduce warmer hues to our rooms and heavier blankets to our beds. We’re spending a little more time indoors to escape the nip in the air, and there’s no other time that makes you appreciate the comfort of your home quite like winter.

As I flip through the pages of the AW22 Inspired Living Magazine I’m overwhelmed with the beauty of the homes throughout our country, from beautifully renovated Queenslanders to inner-city terrace houses, and more importantly, the skill and detail in their interiors. Using my creative skillset to help others curate unique interiors personalised to their lives has always been a passion, and seeing the flair and creativity of other Australian designers is just as exciting. In this season’s Inspired Living Magazine you’ll find tips, tricks, and beautiful styling inspiration from some of the biggest names in the Australian interiors industry as well as interviews with artists and the lust-worthy products that we’re adding to our shopping carts and our homes.

The

CULTURE of ART

Endeavouring to uplift and inspire our senses, spark conversations, and bring light to important issues, the Australian art business Miimi & Jiinda was born.

“My strongest inspiration for my art comes from my Country. The land we live on is everything; the earth is our greatest teacher, our knowledge holder and our divine authority.”

MIIMI AND JIINDA

ADAIRS

“Colours are everything as they lift the energy in the room and have the power to make people feel something and connect deeply with a story you’re trying to convey.”

D

rawing inspiration from walking on Country and swimming in the gaagal (ocean) and bindarrays (rivers), the mother and daughter duo behind Miimi & Jiinda, Melissa and Lauren, say the company was born as a creative outlet for them to connect and create together. Melissa says it’s now become an avenue to bring light to important issues while sharing their culture and spreading colour to homes around Australia. MIIMI & JIINDA

Tell us a little bit about Miimi & Jiinda? Miimi & Jiinda means ‘mother and sister’ and symbolises our strong matriarchal lineage. We come from a strong line of Nyamis (women) who inspire us daily and have instilled in us resilience and determination. It began as a creative outlet for Mum and I to come together and create together. Growing up, I witnessed the injustices that happened to my family and my people, and the injustices that are still happening today, and it instilled in me a drive and passion to create change. And so in that sense, Miimi & Jiinda was not born overnight, it has always been part of me.

Why do you paint? I paint because it makes my soul happy, it is meditative, calming and healing, and is a channel to connect with my ancestors and family members in the spirit world. I have always had that creativity within me, but it wasn’t until the birth of my first son that I really connected with that part of myself. Since then I have really dropped into creating, and have built and grown something I am very proud of.

Tell us about the works you create? Our artwork always tells a story, it’s gentle and healing and portrays our journeys and the essence of who we are as proud First Nations women – cultural, feminine, and deeply personal. The colours and patterns are inspired by our ancestral homelands – they are everything as they evoke emotion and have the power to open people’s hearts and connect deeply with a story you’re trying to tell. We use a mix of oils, ochres and acrylics, and love to experiment with textures and colours, which now, we’re proud to be able to share in others’ homes around the country.

CREATIVE SPIRIT

“I love that the spaces you design are the ones you tend to spend more time with the people you love.”

“Upcycling and DIYing should not be taken too seriously. It’s ok if you run into a few roadblocks, because you inevitably will. All you need to do is more research and ask your local hardware stores all the questions.”

C

ombining old and new with touches of handmade items, Noosa-based mum of two Jaharn Quinn created Smør Home with a vision to inspire others to flex their creative flair.

How would you describe your personal home style? When we first designed and built our house five years ago I was obsessed with creating a minimalist, straightedged, modern home because it reflected my personal style. But after a few years I realised our home lacked the warmth of character and charm. Since then, we have been making small changes and updates, and we’re starting to feel at home. It’s now filled with texture, colour, straight and curved lines, as well as different materials, finishes, patterns, styles and art. We don’t have one style, instead we love to mix eras with new, vintage, DIY and upcycled pieces. We love mid-century modern, transitional, farmhouse and Scandinavian. These days we avoid anything modern, boho or industrial.

Where do you find home styling inspiration for your own home? Home styling for me is a constant work in progress. It’s always evolving as my mood and interests change. I love to look at interior magazines for ideas, and I always get inspiration from Studio McGee, Friends of Form, and Curated Spaces.

Do you have any go-to design or DIY tips? So many tips, where do I start! I think every home DIYer and upcycler should invest in power tools. It’s what really changed the game for me when I bought a jigsaw at the start of last year. I had so many ideas that needed materials to be cut and I got sick of having to push them to the side, so I mustered up some courage and went to Bunnings to buy a jigsaw.

Any decorating words of wisdom? Take your time. We initially invested in some key pieces, including a painting by Stan Piechaczek which we have used as a starting point for the rest of our interior style, a 1970s mid-century modern extendable Danish dining table and other pieces of art by my great uncle. From there we have continued to mix styles, adding homemade touches with new and old.

ne look at this stunning oasis located in Queensland, and you’d think you were lounging by a villa in Mexico. And whilst the climate is similar, you might be shocked to know that this is inner-city Brisbane. This home places outdoor living front and centre – as many tropical-climate homes in Queensland do. Centred around a gleaming blue pool and tiered garden, it’s not uncommon to see homes in the Sunshine State place a large focus on materials like travertine and sandstone, pared back with fresh white tile accents that complement the bright blue sky and scorching sun. A life in this home would be private and tranquil, while still feeling effortless and relaxed. And while this home is quintessential and nostalgic in its own way, there’s not a single tin roof or front porch in sight.

ake one look around the bustling city of Melbourne and some words might come to mind: cool, contemporary, urban, and cutting-edge – for example. As a mecca for progressive architecture and design, architects and builders in Melbourne are no stranger to blending function and practicality with modernism. With a focus on fabrication and open-plan layouts, many homes in this Southern state feature elements like timber, concrete, and steel – always striving to create that perfect blend between industrial and comfortable. Greenery and landscaping is also a high priority for Melbourne homes with sustainability and eco-consciousness always at the forefront. Other elements you can come to expect include large-scale artwork, bold colour, and warm furnishings. In a climate that is as unpredictable as theirs, the modern Victorian home really does need to do it all.

THE SY DN EY TE R R AC E HOM E

Y

ears ago, the narrow facade and British colonial aesthetic of a Sydney terrace house would have been more at home to workers and labourers – after all, that’s who they were built for over a century ago. Today, walk through any tree-lined street in Paddington or Surry Hills and you’ll notice the plethora of slim facades, veranda-like balconies flush to the face of the building, and ornate cast-iron balustrades. They are so commonplace and so sought-after that many see these generational pieces of architecture as an opportunity to purchase a piece of Sydney history. The Terrace House, naturally efficient in it’s footprint, is loved by middle to upper class families and young entrepreneurtypes who favour inner-city living. Here, we see a modern interpretation of the terrace home. From the front, it appears like any other historical home, where the back is transformed into a contemporary oasis. The very best of both the past and the future.

EXPERT

G

rowing up surrounded by nature in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges with sisters in interior design and parents in the plant business, Marita McCausland, owner of boutique plant store Into The Wild, says combining her love of plants and interiors came naturally. With a desire to share her love of natural home décor and styling expertise, we sat down with Marita to discuss all things green.

Tell us why you started in the plant industry? When people visit Into The Wild, I want them to walk in and feel like they’re at home, that they feel happy and calm. That’s how people want their home to feel too. Interior styling with plants is really where our strengths and passion lie, and we love making people happy. At the end of the day, being closer to nature and bringing plants into our homes makes us feel good.

What is your process for choosing the perfect plant for your space? It doesn’t matter whether it’s a bathroom or kitchen, the first question is always, ‘how much light is available in your space?’ From there we can work on the size and aesthetics of the interior and also the customer’s plant parenting skills. We don’t want to overwhelm someone with a high maintenance plant if they don’t have a lot of experience!

Do you have any go-to tips for styling plants within the home? It’s about balance for me, combining a varied mix of textures and colours with leaf shapes and plant varieties is what creates balance. If we put too many plants in a space that have a similar leaf texture it can feel confusing and fails to add interest.

“For me, it’s more about how a plant enhances and connects to its surroundings rather than just the plant itself. ”

If we think about nature like a jungle or a beautiful garden, we see lots of different shapes and varieties and that’s what we should try to aim for indoors too. There are some exceptions, like ferns en masse, for example, they have a place but is not always easy to achieve.

Now, tell us about your own home? Plants, plants, plants – there are too many to count now! I love the colours they add to the space, but it also adds warmth and personality that makes me happy. Coloured walls are also a great backdrop for the greenery, there are no white walls in my house! My house is always evolving and changing, I don’t sit still for very long when it comes to styling my home. I love to mix it up constantly! I have a lot of light and some amazing big bay windows which means I have very happy plants.

PROVINCIAL HOME LIVING

S

etting up a functional workspace begins with comfort, and it doesn’t take long to realise our lounges aren’t comfortable for eight hours a day. Your office space should be designed around the key furniture pieces which will make up the focal point of the room. Whether you’re opting for a standing desk or a full suite of practical ergonomic furniture, designs are now boosting both comfort and style, ensuring it’s an investment you’ll be thanking yourself for. When choosing furniture, make sure there’s cohesion throughout your home by including similar colour schemes and materials from room to room. Designers have moved away from the dull, clinical office furniture your company buys en masse, and instead are designing chic and stylish pieces that are far from an afterthought in your home. Leather, suede, and touches of gold and wood will not only create a flow from room to room but will also add warmth and induce feelings of calm and tranquillity. Space-saving items which act as both furniture and storage help minimise clutter and keep the room free from stress-producing distractions – in turn, boosting your productivity! Furniture will be the focal point of any home office, but the real heroes are the technology items that make working from home a breeze. From Wi-Fi routers that guarantee

connectivity and smooth Zoom meetings, to noisecancelling headphones and printers – setting up a space that’s functional and organised means less distraction, more productivity and most importantly, less frustration. Companies like Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks are just some of the many specialising in curating permanent and comfortable home office setups. In 2021 the interiors world began adopting greenery in our homes more than ever before. What had once been an additional touch to outdoor spaces and dotted sparsely throughout the home became an interior design element in almost every room. The trend extended from plants to the adoption of green colour schemes and botanical wallpapers and art – adding a sense of the outdoors, the hue evokes a sense of life and inspires productivity. Now, we’re adding greenery to our home offices to inspire and cleanse the air for peak productivity, from indoor plants to inspirational natural scenes. Working at home offers us life flexibility that we’re all here for, but to ensure we continue enjoying the balance, these tips and tricks will help curate a comfortable and ergonomic working space free from distractions, offering separation between home and work so you’re ready to tackle whatever comes across your desk.

fter the birth of her first child, Kelle Howard, who at the time was State Manager for MAC Cosmetics, had the time and space to reassess and decided it was an opportunity to start over. Having always had a passion and interest in interior design she decided her maternity leave was as good a time as any to hit the books and study.

pretty effortless, thanks to an incredible team who helped bring her dream to fruition. Each room was meticulously planned so that every space had its own special features and vibe. From a master suite that Kelle describes as her own private sanctuary, to the family cinema room and an outdoor space that feels like you’ve been transported to a private resort – all just a walk from the beach.

In 2019, when Kelle stumbled across a beach shack in Burleigh Heads she had 7 years’ interiors experience under her belt, and her vision for Bajo El Sol was born. “I dreamt of creating a space that pushed the boundaries of what you would usually find in a family home. I drew inspiration from commercial spaces such as luxe hotels and day spas with a big influence from Ibizan architecture,” she says. As a new mum, the project was initially supposed to be a renovation, but after not finding anything that suited her vision she decided to knock down and rebuild instead. Taking just eight months, Kelle said the entire process felt

With a love of minimalism, Kelle focuses on the architectural details of a home – dreamy white concrete and artisan render for the raw, coastal aesthetic, and touches of brass and unexpected details for the luxe element. When designing her spaces, Kelle focuses on larger pieces such as rugs and artwork to form the colour palette for each space and then draws on the colours within these pieces to curate the decor and soft furnishings. While Kelle says architectural statement furniture pieces are her interior must-have, she says being fluid and letting the space evolve naturally throughout the design process often leads to even more amazing results.

GOLD RUSH

The ultimate symbol of luxury, gold accents add warmth and sophistication to any room but it’s the kitchen where the decadent trend truly comes alive.

The Midas touch Seen as a symbol of wealth and power for centuries, gold is often associated with opulent interiors and gaudy overdone designs but when applied with subtlety and sophistication in mind, can add just the right amount of gilded age splendour to your home.

harp and angular, inviting yet bold – the structural trend is the polar opposite of the curve trend and it’s resurfacing in a big way for 2022. 2021 saw the re-emergence of the structural trend, with furniture brands embracing clean lines and statement-making furniture. As we enter the cooler seasons, interior designers have moved away from the stark, clinical style that often comes with minimalist interiors and are instead adding a comfortable edge that’s perfect for lounging, relaxing and living. As the main social area of the home, the living room should offer functionality and comfort while also being a bold focal point. This season, we’re opting for statement coffee tables and lounges to centre these spaces while adding soft hues, organic fabrics, and curved décor to offset the angles and create a tranquil cohesion. While the trend typically lends itself to a monochrome finish, brown and marble add a warmth to the space that’s autumnal, rustic and comforting. Add in touches of light with glass and mirrored surfaces to finish the look, while metal accents create a timeless, trans-seasonal finish that won’t date.

A home for

ALL SEASONS With over 12 years’ experience, Oak and Orange duo, Heather Gampe and Sarah Jobse are design lovers, mums and builders’ wives. Here, they share their tips to create trans-seasonal spaces.

36.

INSPI R ED L I V I NG

E

mbracing textural and organic combinations like polished concrete and sandstone rock walls paired with neutral colour schemes, textural linens and large picture windows, Heather and Sarah create that holiday at home feeling for all seasons.

How do you approach designing a transseasonal home? Whether you’re building a brand new home or renovating, it’s a great idea to orientate your living area towards the north. It will mean in the summer months the sun will head over the top of the home throughout the heat of the day and in the winter months when the sun is lower, the sunshine will beam into the main living rooms of the home, creating warmth. To create a truly trans-seasonal home it’s important to consider your climate and how you like to entertain. In both of our homes, we have pools for those hot Sydney summer days and outdoor fires/pizza ovens for cosy winter entertaining when the pool is not in use.

Do you have any tips and tricks to remember? Mood boards are a must! If you are going to be designing or styling a

room, a mood board helps you to make sure all the pieces are going to work well together before the financial commitment. You need to consider natural light and size because colours and materials will look different depending on the amount of natural light a room receives and can impact how a room feels. Size may also determine the final colours and materials we choose as we don’t want to make a small room feel smaller, we want to do everything we can to make it feel bigger – or we may wish to make a larger room that has ample natural light feel cosy. When it comes to styling a home, common mistakes we see people make is choosing furniture, rugs or art that is the wrong size.

Do you have any interior must-haves? We love a kitchen island bench for when we are entertaining guests, it’s nice to be able to talk with friends even whilst we may be preparing a meal or cleaning up. Another musthave is a conversational area by the fire. Whether it’s an indoor fireplace or outdoor fire pit, a warm cosy area inside or outside the home will be well used and enjoyed during hot summer days or cold winter months.

ur sanctuaries and our stages – bathrooms are the comfortable spaces that deserve a touch of luxury, and yet they’re one of the most often-forgotten rooms when it comes to styling. While the space is undoubtedly our go-to when it comes to relaxation, that doesn’t mean it’s a space for dull décor.

1.

EMBRACE ABSTRACT Contrast Victorian and antique finishings with bold geometric and abstract décor.

2.

For those wanting to refresh a tired bathroom space, timeless finishes like marble and white tiles paired with a practical layout mean the bathroom is luxurious but still warm, comfortable, and functional. To add a little pizzazz and contrast to the bathrooms’ usual white on white interiors, black or brass accents add depth and drama and instantly elevate the room. When it comes to choosing furnishings, a freestanding bath takes centre stage and adds another layer of luxury, while touches of antique or Victorian-inspired fixtures is a statement that exudes indulgence.

EXPERT

Cosy spaces with Nicole Rosenberg What is your process when designing a kids’ room?

LIBERTY INTERIORS

My starting point is always getting to know my client, the space, and the needs and wants of both the child and the parents. Once I have been in the space and gathered all the information, the creative wheels in my head start turning and even before I put pen to paper with a mood board I already have the entire room in my head! I always factor in the age of the child and the longevity of each room design because children’s needs change whilst growing up. I usually like to categorise the rooms into three different phases – first is the nursery from 0 - 5, then the child’s room from 5 - 10, and then a tween room which will hopefully get you through until they move out.

Can you decorate a room that will grow with the child? Absolutely! We always try to consider this when creating concepts for our clients. You need to consider that the larger furniture items you buy will always work whatever the age of the child – so for example the bed, bedside table, reading chair and desk that you choose should be ‘ageless’ and then you can always update ‘changeable’ items such as bed linen, decorative cushions and rugs. You can also get creative with painting the room a kids’ colour and then easily change this to something more neutral as the child grows. Also, removable wallpaper is another great inexpensive option to bring the fun factor to the room whilst your child is young and then can easily be removed (without a wallpaper installer) by yourself!

Are there any rules when it comes to designing kids’ rooms? No! And this is the reason I love working on kids’ bedroom projects because I can have as much fun as my client will allow! You can really let your creative juices flow in kids’ rooms – you have full carte blanche! I guess one rule to consider, if any, is that having storage solutions for toys is key. It’s great to have these items concealed so that the room always looks neat and tidy and that the child is then responsible for putting items away in their room – after all you want the space to still feel calm as it’s also a sleeping sanctuary for them.

When it comes to home styling do you have any tips and tricks?

Do you have any tips for creating comfortable and tranquil bedroom spaces?

I always start with a clean slate. If you are styling a hall table for example, clear everything off it first. Start fresh, then start layering in your favourite objects. Remember to use different textures and heights – and less is more!

Do you have a design ethos? My work is about creating a timeless design. My aim is always to create light

Do you have a favourite room to design? Bedrooms and kid’s rooms are my favourite – there are endless possibilities!

White, white, white! I always love using white walls and crisp white linen. White is my ultimate go to colour! It’s refreshing and calming. I then layer in textured cushions, light wood tones, rattan, and warm natural colours. Your bedroom is a place to unwind from the day, so you should feel very tranquil and relaxed when you enter.

Where do you find home styling inspiration? Everywhere! From Instagram, Pinterest and my favourite stores to shop. I always follow my favourite designers daily on Instagram to get inspiration.

Do you have any interior must haves for 2022? I have been loving introducing a touch of bouclé and soft form curves into my rooms.

reative minds, renovation experts, and former The Block contestants, Hayden and Sara Vale, shared with us their latest project and forever-home, nestled on the coastline of one of the South Coast’s most sought-after suburbs.

Channelling its surroundings overlooking the verdant forestcovered escarpment, the modern-Australian home features strong architectural and industrial design elements like sleek raked ceilings, open plan kitchen and dining spaces, and raw, highquality materials.

Four years on from their win on The Block, the couple fell in love with the quintessential Aussie beach town of Stanwell Park, on the south coast of New South Wales just a short drive from Wollongong. Finding a perfectly located property, Hayden and Sara saw serious potential in a quaint beach shack just a short stroll from the beach – the downside was that it was far from move-in ready, in fact, a whole re-build was required.

The styling of the home is a nod to the beautiful natural surroundings, featuring an ocean-hued kitchen space and textured organic décor ubiquitous with the coastal style. Balancing and offsetting the natural colour scheme of the home are bold accents and brass hardware that create warmth and luxury. While soft furnishings and curved elements add a homely touch that’s instantly inviting.

After a year of ups, downs, and lockdowns the five-story SouthHouse is a remarkable reflection of this couple’s dedication to high-quality building and swoon-worthy styling.

Sharing their home with their two young kids, the space Hayden and Sara have created is the epitome of an on-trend, modern family home – built for both living and admiring.

ith the autumn winter sesaon upon us it’s easy to embrace the comfort of the lounge and hearty food a little too much. While we’re here for snuggly days spent at home cooking and revelling in quality family time, there are a few little ways to ensure you and your family are embracing a healthy balance. In Australia, more often than not, we’re spoiled with warmer conditions, but daily stresses like exposing the body to extreme changes in temperature through heating and air conditioning, and our rapidly changing extreme weather events can play havoc on our immune systems. While some are blessed with an unwavering commitment, staying active when the weather is cold or rainy can be tough. To ensure you’ve got motivation at the front of your mind, kit out your home with exercise equipment, or visit your local gym and let them help you find an activity or class you actually enjoy doing. Ensuring your body and mind are active and adding a few, quality nutrition-boosting ingredients to your diet will help you stay revitalised and glowing all season long.

Boost your intake As the saying goes, you are what you eat – and in the cooler months, it’s all about immuneboosting ingredients to fend off the winter chills. While we all know the benefits of vitamin C-rich citrus fruits, green vegetables are packed full of vitamin A which is also essential for an active immune system. To ensure you get your daily five, boost your greens intake by adding supplements like spirulina, chlorella, matcha green tea and green tea extract to your diet. LIFESTYLE

Scandi muse With impeccable interior style and an eye for trends, Guest Editor Kerrie-Ann Jones has made a name for herself as a celebrated industry expert. Now, we take a peek inside her stunning Sydney home.

How would you describe your interior style? My interior style is curated, I like to use interesting textures, objects and art in a way that feels balanced and calm yet still has personality. Warm sandy neutral tones paired with touches of earthy hues are my colour palette of choice. Neutral and earthy hues are easy to style with as they mix and match well. I find this palette is also timeless, sophisticated, and chic which is what I aim for with any interior I create.

What is the secret to a really great room?

A room that grabs my attention must have a great colour palette or a unique design element that is the focal point and really draws you into the space. It must have layers of textures and interesting objects, trinkets and memories that make it feel like a home. I want to see a home that reflects the people that live there, not just trend pieces that will date quickly.

What are a few tips for making over a room on a budget?

You can easily make a decent impact on a small budget by purchasing items such as wall art – this creates a focal point in the room and then small layers such as cushions and decorative objects within the same colour palette as the wall art, tie it all together.

What are the top trends right now as far as colours, textures, and interiors go?

I’m seeing lots of gingham patterns for bedding which I’m loving – it’s very playful yet chic. WIth colours, pastels are coming back – especially pale buttery yellow. I never thought I’d be into yellow, but I am loving this soft tone. Also lots of deep coloured marble furniture that has strong veins and striking patterns. Furniture with curved edges and round shapes are also here to stay for 2022.

If you think a certain look works well in a room, should you let it be, or occasionally try to update it? For me, I can’t help but try to change up my home every now and then – however not in a big way. It can be small updates like cushions, throws, decorative pieces. You can also move things around and style what you have already, but in different places in your home. I do this often – it’s a fun way to feel like you’ve given your home a refresh without spending any money.
