EDITOR’S NOTE

Hello and happy birthday to us –wow, where have the last 22 years gone? It’s been one wild ride with its fair share of ups, downs, changes, innovation, and dare I say it, pivots. Paul and I would like to say thank you to our wonderful team, readers, and advertisers. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you all!

It’s that time of the year again, we’re at the halfway point and everything is happening, there’s photoshoots galore and creative campaigns coming from every possible angle –I honestly think the years just keeping getting faster and faster. The good thing is, and I’ve said this before, no day is the same and that’s what keeps us on our toes.

Anyways, let’s get into our fabulous Birthday Issue… on the cover, we feature Nicholas Stankiewicz from NS Properties Brisbane, Lina Rooftop Bar (now that’s a view!), and Edward Street Brisbane – what a wonderful collaboration!

Inside, we chat to Jared Webb from awardwinning interior design practice, J.AR Office, Darvella Patisserie’s head chef (and get the lowdown on how to decorate a cake like a pro), and shine a spotlight on Brisbane Fashion Festival – we spoke to three of the designers behind the show and it’s shaping up to be an exciting week!

And, because I wish I was in Europe right now soaking up the sun in picturesque Puglia, Italy, I couldn’t help but put together a fun edit –enjoy. Until next month!

Happy birthday Style! This month marks my 10th issue with the dream team, and Tracy is right, not one day has been the same. From beauty auctions to moody photoshoots in our storeroom (check it out on page 33!), there’s always something fun and exciting happening at Style HQ.

In honour of this month’s issue, we’ve filled the mag with all things birthday-esque – from a vibey dinner party edit to an interesting read on what the heck a Saturn return is, there’s something for everyone (PSA, head to page 14 to read all about our epic birthday giveaways).

I also chatted to the founder of the trendiest home care product brand ever, Leah O’Connor of Domenica Formulations and interviewed OG influencer and all-round Aussie ‘it girl’, Cartia Mallan about where to shop, dine, and play in lively London, her new home of residence. PS, enjoy my birthday outfit edit (I mean, it’s in August, but you can never be too organised right?).

Jared Webb

Get to know the man behind J.AR Office, the recent winner of Australia’s Emerging Interior Design Practice 2023.

Jared spent his childhood drawing floor plans in art class and marvelling over buildings and construction sites. Despite this, it was a visit to Rome’s ancient Pantheon at 17 years old that really solidified his obsession with architecture.

Fast forward to today and Jared has been working in the industry for over 15 years. In 2021, he opened his very own practice, J.AR Office, in the leafy suburb of Teneriffe.

Described by Jared as something that materialised organically, J.AR Office was created with the ambition to positively contribute to Brisbane’s built and social environment. “What started as a couple of side projects for friends, escalated into larger opportunities,” he says.

The journey of starting your own business was, of course, not short of its challenges. Especially for someone who studied and practiced architecture rather than business.

“It was a bittersweet decision to start my own business, what a ride!”

As the design studio behind Oxlade residential building in New Farm and The

Disco Hair Salon in Stones Corner to name a few, J.AR Studio’s efforts were recently recognised at the 2023 Australian Interior Design Awards. Taking out the award for Emerging Interior Design Practice along with the projects mentioned receiving a Best of State Award for Residential Design (QLD) and a Best of State Award for Commercial Design (QLD).

“It was so unexpected! We are so privileged to be recognised in our first year as a Brisbane-based practice that has presence on a national scale, especially alongside so many incredible designers from across the country,” he says.

The future is looking exciting for this upand-coming practice, with a range of projects in the works such as The Warehouses by Cornerstone, the Gerard’s Restaurant redesign, and a new restaurant on Fish Lane – stay tuned!

In his spare time, you’ll find Jared sailing out on the bay with a crisp lager in hand or having a snooze between swims under a pandanus tree on Little Cove Beach in Noosa.

NS Properties Brisbane has been making waves in the real estate market ever since its conception in 2016. With Director Nicholas Stankiewicz at the helm, the boutique agency has quickly become known for its commitment to quality properties and seamless selling processes.

Nicholas, who has been one of Queensland’s highest selling agents since starting his career in 2007, credits his success to his passion for the industry and his dedication to his clients. “The challenge of selling homes and guiding people through the personal decisions involved in each case is what I love most about what I do,” he says. “My goal is to add value to every transaction and provide tailored recommendations to help my clients achieve the best possible outcome.”

Nicholas’ hands-on approach to every property campaign ensures that his clients return to him time and time again, and in most cases, as friends. He prides himself on building longterm connections and establishing lasting friendships.

And there’s more. Nicholas and his highly-skilled team are not only trained in negotiation, but also in preparation and styling. That’s right,

Nicholas and his team will take away all the stress that comes with preparing a home for sale, as well as deal with tradespeople on your behalf. In fact, his passion for design was reignited by the ability to completely renovate his own property in Toowong, where he currently resides.

Having lived in many suburbs around town, such as New Farm and The Gap, (he also attended Marist College Ashgrove!), you can rest assured you’re in great hands.

His forward-thinking approach and attention to detail has earned him a reputation as a trusted advisor and a valued community member. So, if you’re looking for a trusted advisor to help you navigate the real estate market, look no further than NS Properties Brisbane.

WALK THIS WAY

From high-end brands to delicious eats, Edward Street Brisbane is Queensland’s most prestigious and exciting retail precinct.

Rumour has it you can fill an entire weekend with culture, history, style, and entertainment in just one city street! Yes, we’re talking about Brisbane’s very own Edward Street. Nestled in the heart of the CBD, Edward Street Brisbane has everything from luxury fashion to beautiful historic buildings. Only have a limited time to take in the sights? Here’s everything you need to know.

A trip through history

Since 1926, Tattersall’s Arcade has been a luxury one-stop shop for discerning shoppers. Designed by Hall and Prentice (the same firm responsible for Brisbane City Hall), the building is now home to a collection of Brisbane’s finest shops from international names like Longchamp to local favourites such as Hunt Leather and Optiko, and leading jewellers Canturi and A.G. Designer Jewellery. It’s also home to the heritage-listed Tattersall’s Club.

Luxe city, baby!

Did you know there are more international names on Edward Street than in the rest of Brisbane? From Hermes and Cartier to Montblanc and Christian Louboutin, if it’s shown on an international runway, you can find it here. Edward Street Brisbane is also home to global minimalist, COS, as well as Dutch giant, Scotch & Soda.

Treat yourself

What shopping trip would be complete without some me time? Origani can have your skin nofilter ready in no time thanks to their impressive range of organic products, while global hairdressing super brand, Toni & Guy, has all your hair and make-up needs sorted.

Men’s mania

When it comes to men’s clothing options, they’re usually few and far between, but not at Edward Street Brisbane. For more than four decades, Mitchell Ogilvie Menswear has been suiting up the men of Brisbane. Selling some of the world’s best brands from Brioni and Brunello Cucinelli to Canali and Ogilvie’s own bespoke brand, it’s a one-stop shop for all your suiting needs. And there’s more. Edward Street Brisbane is also home to M.J. Bale, which has a wide selection of premium suits, tuxedoes, jackets, shirts, and more!

A little frosting

Edward Street is Brisbane’s unofficial diamond and jewellery district with stunning handcrafted creations from both international and local artisans. As well as Tattersall’s Arcade’s leading jewellers, Edward Street Brisbane is also home to The Diamond Jewellery Studio, who are best known for pink diamonds, The Hour Glass, where you’ll find all the luxury watch brands, such as Rolex, Omega Tag Heuer, and Paspaley, who are regarded worldwide as producing some of the most beautiful pearls on Earth.

Dig in

After a full day of shopping, there’s no better way to unwind than hitting up City Winery for a cheeky bevy or Jumbo Thai for a hearty lunch. After something a bit more lowkey? There’s an array of cafes along the strip including Coffee Booth.

Finish on a buzz

Brisbane’s best interactive and immersive entertainment facility, Fox in a Box, is a super fun way to spend a few hours, putting your wits, logic, and teamwork to the test to find clues, crack codes and solve puzzles before time runs out. With six themed experiences to choose from, it’s the perfect way to get out of your head and enjoy some entertaining escapism (pun intended!).

EMMA STEWART,

Analia the label

Hancock Prospecting Next Gen Group Show

How did Analia the label come about?

I was diagnosed with advanced stage 3C bowel cancer in 2018. I had only just returned home to Melbourne from a month in London visiting friends and having meetings. I was living my dream, travelling the world, and working in the fashion industry. But my wings were clipped. From the spare bedroom of my mum’s house on the Sunshine Coast, I imagined a beautiful life full of colour, joy, whimsy, travel, and adventure. I don’t have cancer anymore, that is not the issue, but to save my life the radiation treatment had to

promotion

be extreme. This resulted in menopause, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, and the part they don’t tell you about is trauma, loneliness, mourning who you were, depression, and PTSD. It involved a lot of therapy; talk therapy, art therapy, mediation… anything to give you hope. For me it was fashion. I would happily spend those days, months, and eventually years bedridden, designing beautiful clothes, sketching and playing with fabric.

So, your brand officially launches in August, congratulations, how does that feel?

I’ve been incredibly lucky with the timing of BFF and the launch of Analia the label. Analia is literally walking down the runway and onto the online store at the same time.

And to think Analia almost didn’t make it. I was aiming to launch last year and some days it felt like the universe was telling me to give up. But I didn’t and eventually the right person believed in me, so thank you Joseph from T2M Fashion, he has fought the good fight for me and advocated for Analia where my health could not. As a result, Analia has over 20 retail partners Australia-wide, launching our first collection this August.

The collection looks beautiful, can you tell me a little bit about the vibe?

I took my personal love of high fashion and made it comfortable and functional, with a whole lot of joy. I want you to feel beautiful and comfortable. Also, now that I’m a Queenslander, I have naturally gravitated towards fabrics that can breathe in this humidity. And I’m just trying to limit my footprint on this beautiful planet of ours.

STEPHANIE CUNNINGHAM, Bonfire The Label (formerly Bonita Collective)

The Star Brisbane Fashion Show

Tell us, what is the inspiration behind your new collection?

The collection we’ll be showcasing at BFF is titled ‘Great Southern Land’ and it’s our ode to the spectacular landscape of our beautiful country. Staged over three drops, we’ve used a lot of vibrant fuchsias, rusts, corals, and pinks to represent our red centre as well as uplifting turquoises, azures, and lilacs to capture our

endless panoramic skies. We’ve introduced knits and crochets for the first time to reflect the textural soil and sand of the earth, as well as working with our trusty linens, cottons, and silks for lightweight summer wear. We’re also really excited to release our first swim line as part of this collection; constructed from beautifully Italian-made, eco-friendly fabric –it’s been a long time coming!

Why the rebrand?

It’s a huge time in the brand’s history! We’ve evolved dramatically over the years, almost to the point of being unrecognisable from where we started, and the name ‘Bonita’ felt disconnected and stale. We are super excited to announce a rebrand that very much aligns with our new and elevated direction, Bonfire The Label. Brisbane Fashion Festival will be Bonfire the Label’s first official show and we couldn’t be more excited to light up that runway!

Who is the Bonfire woman?

The Bonfire woman has an enchanting glow and spark to her. She is strong, full of spirit, and unapologetically herself.

GINA KIM Designer Group Show

What can we expect from your show this year? The name of SS24 collection is ‘After Party’, inspired from the Venice Film Festival After Party that I went to last year. It will be full of bright colours and lots of sparkles. My favourite piece is a dress that I’m personally working on. It’s 100 per cent hand crafted with 1,000 metres of rhinestone rope – I’m excited to see how this garment will turn out!

Where do you seek inspiration?

My inspiration comes from everything, what I see, hear, and feel! Most of my inspiration also comes from travelling. I travel overseas regularly and always come back with fresh ideas.

How would you describe your own personal style and does that influence your designs?

I like to dress up for special occasions and love unique and stand-out pieces. I’m always designing pieces that I can wear too. I think my clothes represent myself and my character.

How has Gina Kim transformed over the years?

Gina Kim launched in 2003 and started out as haute couture, made-to-measure pieces only. We are now trying to introduce more modern and affordable pieces with a touch of special haute couture elements.

What inspired Something Very Special?

Matty and I have both been in the fashion industry since our early 20s – Matty as a fashion designer and me as a fashion photographer/art director and sales agent. We started dating at 33 and after four years of living together, we just felt it was time to do our thing without any limitations.

Coming from an agency background, what was the move to making clothing like?

The evolution from a fashion agency to having a label of our own was pretty smooth. The agency allowed us to get a good understanding of how wholesale works and how retailers buy and gave us a little glimpse at what was missing from the market and how we could disrupt it a little.

What was the first piece you created and why?

The very first ‘Very Special’ pieces were created as merch for my online platform Sticks and Stones. We sourced vintage Champion sweaters and upcycled them with a big Very Special puff print logo. They sold out overnight and the next day we decided it was the perfect name for our new label. But our first Something Very Special creation was a vacay set with a big bold print made up of the letters 'BLSP' which stood for 'Be Less Sh*t Please'. It was a subtle message to people who were being sh*t.

What you wear sends a message about who you are, and when you don the cheeky pieces from this Sunshine Coast-born label, you’re

special. We sat down with Ainsley Hutchence who –alongside her co-founder and partner Matty Bouris –creates sartorial armour with Something Very Special.

Fashion as a whole seems to be embracing androgyny – why did you choose to make many of your pieces unisex?

Matty and I often steal each other's clothes, so for us it just felt natural to create fashion without a gender label attached to it. Plus, boy's clothes are way more comfortable.

Tell us about the Protect Your Energy collection: how did it come about?

We were at a friend’s birthday party and a friend of a friend refused to enter the room. She was just standing at the door, announcing she really needed to protect her energy so she couldn’t come in. It became the punchline of the night. The kicker is, she was right. It turned into a f*cking weird night but we left with inspiration and the perfect name for our next collection.

Your range is very colourful and expressive – how do you want people to feel when they wear your pieces?

The most obvious and cliché answer is "Very Special". But it really is that simple. We want people to put on our pieces and feel special - confident and empowered to express themselves freely. SOMETHINGVERYSPECIAL.CO

LET IT SNOW

An enchanting cosy winter oasis awaits at Lina Rooftop, the ultimate sky bar in Brisbane.

When you think of a cosy winter oasis, a trendy rooftop bar in the heart of the city may not first come to mind, but South Brisbane’s Lina Rooftop has completely transformed into a chic winter wonderland.

Picture custom-made private igloos fitted out with soft, plush throws and cushions, falling snow, sweet and savoury fondue boards paired with spiced mulled wine (more on this below), DJs and live entertainment, and mesmerising icicle light shows. Lina Rooftop has also swapped out their usual comfy day beds for stylish fire pits and log holders – like we said, they have completely transformed the space!

The igloos in question can fit up to six guests and are fitted with a heater, mini bar, and twinkling fairy lights, making this a seriously toasty vibe!

Our favourite part of the activation? The food, of course! The team at Lina are offering two delicious packages: Igloo Fondue Package ($79pp) and Igloo Wonderland Package ($99). Here’s a breakdown on both…

If you can’t decide between a sweet or savoury board, the Igloo Fondue Package comes with both a chocolate fondue set (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, marshmallows, apple, white chocolate, dark chocolate, and brioche) and a cheese fondue

set (crusty baguette, rosemary and garlic roasted chats, selection of cured meats, gherkins, on vine cherry tomato, porcini and truffle arancini) with delicious mulled wine.

While the Igloo Wonderland Package swaps out the cheese fondue set for a fancy French platter, which consists of garlic and rosemary roasted potatoes, gherkins, selections of cured meats, Swiss brown mushrooms, and melted raclettes, and comes with the option of either mulled wine or a glass of bubbles (and yes, the chocolate fondue set is also included). The Lina team will also be adding winter warmer favourites like delicious eggnog to their menus. With Brisbane’s most iconic rooftop views, comforting food, and a cosy atmosphere, this is one winter experience worth getting warmed up for.

Limoncello mule

You’ll need:

60ml LouisB Limoncello

60ml ginger beer

15ml fresh lemon juice

1 strawberry

4 basil leaves

Method:

Start by muddling the strawberry and basil in a shaker. Add lemon juice and LouisB limoncello and shake well. Strain into a short glass filled with ice and top off with ginger beer. Garnish with lemon or basil. Enjoy!

Cin-cin!

A slice of the Amalfi Coast right on Brisbane’s doorstep.

Nestled in the heart of Paddington is where you’ll find Brisbane’s very own slice of Italy, LouisB Limoncello. Founded by Leith Anderson-Reid in 2021, this lovingly crafted liqueur will instantly transport you to Italy’s Amalfi Coast. Thirsty yet? We are!

Having holidayed in Italy when she was young, Leith never imagined she would one day be making her own limoncello, let alone be running a thriving business. In true Italian style, the idea was sparked while enjoying a nightcap at her local trattoria. Her husband and the restaurant owner (who is affectionally known as ‘mama’) would often have a limoncello together at the end of the night. “It would sometimes double our bill, so I thought maybe it was time to try making it,” she explains. And that’s exactly what she did. Captivating the tastebuds of friends and family, questions began flooding in if Leith’s delicious homemade limoncello was available for purchase. Flashforward to two years ago, she decided to take a leap of faith and transform her passion into a business.

Made with just four ingredients, this bottle of lemony goodness not only tastes great by itself, but also works well in several recipes, from yellow negroni to tiramisu (a personal fave!).

And for those cocktail connoisseurs at home, Leith has the perfect recipe. We’ve all heard of the Moscow mule, but have you heard of the limoncello mule? A twist on a classic, this simple recipe combines limoncello with muddled strawberries, basil, fresh lemon juice, and ginger beer.

So, the next time you’re craving a taste of Italy or hosting a dinner party, keep LouisB on your radar. Trust us when we say you’ll be hooked after just one sip!

Sweet temptations

Boy, do we have a treat in store for you!

We sat down with Darvella Patisserie Executive Chef, Lindsay Krahenbring for a behind-the-scenes look at the decorating of their gourmet cakes. Below, Lindsay shares her top tips and a divine buttercream icing recipe.

What tools are a must when decorating a cake?

A good turntable, cake scraper, palette knives, cake decorating tools, piping bags, and a pastry knife.

Tell us what steps you take to get the base of the cake to the final design…

The first step is deciding on the cake flavour. Then we play around with decorating the cake to match the flavour. We rotate through so many cake flavours, so sometimes it can be tricky to think of new ways to decorate. We usually make a few model cakes and play around with icing techniques until we create something we’re happy with.

What is your favourite piping style and why?

I love piping ’shag’ style cakes with a grass nozzle piping tip. They take a long time, but the end result is awesome!

Where do you seek inspiration for cake designs?

There are loads of places on the internet to look for cake inspiration, but I’m a huge fan of cookbooks. My cookbook collection is huge, and I might not even get inspiration from an actual cake design, but rather plated dishes or flavour combinations – the rest just happens in my mind.

Describe the most elaborate cake you have ever decorated…

Definitely triple tier wedding cakes with amazing flower arrangements or marbled buttercream cakes.

Tell us what you love about working at Darvella Patisserie…

We have a lot of free rein here to play with new concepts and ideas which is amazing. We are also a really tight-knit team and work together with new menu ideas – I like to have all of the chefs involved with this. I definitely love working at Darvella!

Darvella Patisserie buttercream icing

You’ll need:

175g egg whites

175g caster sugar

500g unsalted butter, softened 2 vanilla pods, seeds scraped

Method:

Place egg whites and sugar in a bowl over simmering water and whisk constantly, checking with thermometer until the temp reaches 70°C

Transfer meringue to a KitchenAid bowl and whisk on high until thick meringue has formed. Add scraped vanilla seeds. Reduce speed and gradually add the butter, once all the butter has been added continue to whisk until light and fluffy.

Impactful art

Artist, gallerist, project curator, and consultant, Michael Eather wears many hats. Born and educated in Tasmania, Michael, who owns one of Brisbane’s beloved contemporary art galleries has always had a passion for art. While studying a Fine Arts degree at university, Michael fell in love with multidisciplinary art and the capacity for adventure as an artist.

Fireworks Gallery emerged organically as a commercial gallery in 1993 following Campfire Group Projects, a project cofounded by Michael that worked to promote collaboration and cross-cultural initiatives. Tucked away in the industrial corner of Bowen Hills, Fireworks Gallery features roughly 30 artists, with a blend of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous works.

“The ongoing curatorial theme underpinning the gallery’s exhibition program…remains the desire to present artworks by Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists alongside each other,” he explains.

Art is sourced from across the country from professional and emerging independent artists, selected communities, and art centres. When asked what sets his gallery apart from the others, he reckons it’s

all down to ‘the vibe’.

“Our gallery is kind of a blend of a warehouse studio, a large lounge room, and a kitchen table, with a drawing room where artworks drift in and present themselves mysteriously to the passing crowds. Sure, we have openings and events, but the day-to-day of our gallery operations is where the magic is; people and art randomly collide and collude.”

Michael’s journey as an artist has morphed over the years. In 2019, he opened up his own art studio, Ghost Ship Studio, in Newstead, where he features his own sculptures, paintings, and artist collaborations. “I consider all the industry and gallery work I do as simply different forms of my art practice,” he says.

Michael says his art journey was largely inspired by his time travelling by road and foot to the Northern Territory and living in the Maningrida community. Having been immersed heavily in the culture, Michael’s interest in crosscultural themes and collaboration was born. It was this experience that drew him to settle in Brisbane.

“Brisbane eventually became a great

base, halfway between north and south. It’s now home,” he says.

When asked why he thinks it is important to promote Indigenous artwork, he explains that it’s for the sustainability and celebration of art in all aspects of our shared society. It also reflects an alternative view on art, that being that it is a crucial pillar of society – a perspective often overlooked in Western culture. “Having a commercial gallery that showcases some of these elements and values…is a joy and a privilege.”

30 years on, Michael’s youthful passion and desire for cultural immersion have sustained.

“I feel an incredible responsibility to design pieces that will journey with the owner for a lifetime not a season. It is imperative that conscious use of materials is considered in my design process so I feel drawn to a neutral colour pallet while experimenting with surface texture and shape to create interest within a design.”

“My creative process always begins with a mood, a textual reference, or a feeling that I am captivated by. I then widely explore that theme through gathering inspirational images, colours, and objects that align. I then refine this collection of inspiration alongside the Marloe Marloe core identity and explore shape and design within the framework. From here I design specific forms and we develop these with our makers.”

Made by MARLOE

From humble beginnings as a Gold Coast stylist, Marloe Morgan’s creative roots have always run deep. Almost a decade later, her luxury ceramics brand has taken the pottery world by storm and can be found in stores like David Jones and Net-a-Porter. Chances are, if you’re a foodie who frequently dines out in BNE or the GC you’ve likely eaten from one of her contemporary artisanal creations. Introducing the visionary force and founder of Marloe Marloe.

“We love to spend time at the beach in Sanur, Bali and take long weekends regularly to explore the island. The weather for most of the year is incredible, so we love to be outdoors riding our bikes and eating at local restaurants.”

MARLOE MORGAN AND JAMES COATHUP

“We are hoping to launch a range of rattan pieces to market in 2024. This is very much still in development, and we are learning so much about the material, production methods, and what is possible with that natural and sustainable material.”

“I set up a pottery studio and began selling works in early 2015. That year I had the opportunity to concept and create the tableware for Paper Daisy and in room pieces for Halcyon House. I quickly gained a presence within the commercial hospitality industry working with chefs, restaurants, and hotels on the east coast of Australia.”

“We have been producing commercial grade pottery for our hotel and restaurant clientele with makers in Indonesia for eight years, so we were traveling back and forth from Australia to Bali six to seven times a year. When the opportunity came to travel again, we made the decision to relocate to be closer to our production partners as it is such an integral part of Marloe Marloe.”

“Our Stevie vase is still my favourite form and I never tire of styling this vessel. I also love kitchenware as the functional nature of these pieces draw you to use them daily and I find so much pleasure in sharing a meal with loved ones or styling an incredible fruit bowl on the bench.”
“I absolutely love Magali Pascal’s designs. They are the perfect blend of relaxed refinement and coastal chic. A pair of leather sandals by La Tribe is also a go-to for me.”

Easy like Sunday morning

Domenica Formulations is changing the way we approach home care, one aesthetically-pleasing bottle at a time.

My ideal day off is usually centred around cleaning, so when I came across Brisbane-based home care brand, Domenica (Italian for ‘Sunday’), I knew I had to learn more.

Domenica offers a new approach to home care with premium scented cleaning products ranging from laundry liquid to surface spray. Not only do they smell divine – some would even say like a ‘boujee hotel’ – but they’re also made from quality ingredients and 100 per cent recycled plastic. Oh, and did I mention they look fabulous too?

Leah O’Connor launched Domenica in mid2021 after struggling to find cleaning products that didn’t smell like lime, came in fluorescent packaging, or used harsh chemicals.

“For most people, our homes are our biggest asset, they are our sanctuary and a reflection of who we are,” Leah says. “I thought it was ironic that the products we were using to clean our homes were actually our ‘dirty secrets’, kept hidden in cupboards and out of sight.”

“So, I wanted to create a brand that was not only personal to me, but paid homage to the home care rituals passed down to me, used

quality ingredients, and was aesthetically pleasing – a sink side ‘objet d’art’.”

Leah spent a lot of time with her grandparents growing up and credits them to her success. “They took great pride in their home; you could eat off any surface,” she recalls. “My grandmother had lots of little rituals for making people feel at home in her house. I always felt cared for and comfortable; when I think of unconditional love, she comes to mind. The kind of feeling I hope people have when they come into our home now.”

As for the brand’s signature scent,

36 | STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU @STYLEMAGAZINES
HOME

‘boscosa’, which is made up of notes of sandalwood, cedar, papyrus, leather, amber, and violet flowers, Leah says it was inspired by a trip to New York City with her husband.

“We stayed at a beautiful little boutique hotel in Soho, and they had scented all of the common areas. That is the fragrance we have recreated with boscosa. Now I hope it conjures up special memories of ‘home’ for our family and friends.”

The rest of the year is looking pretty busy for this mum-of-one (soon to be two!), who is working with a European fragrance house on new scents, as well as exploring the possibility of introducing body wash and candles, and if they smell anything like their existing range, I know I can’t wait!

FAST FIVE

One sentence to introduce yourself…

I’m a mother, a wife, a homebody, a cooking and interiors enthusiast, a bit of a hopeless romantic, and I’m obnoxiously punctual (except when it comes texting, apologies to anyone currently waiting on a response from me!).

What’s your signature scent? Goes without saying Domenica’s boscosa fragrance, but personally I do love Grand Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian.

What’s on your vanity?

ILIA Multi-Stick, Saie Dew Blush, Saie Glowy Super Gel, Go-To Very Luxe Face Cream, and L’Oréal True Match Foundation. You never leave home without… Lucas’ Papaw Ointment.

On Sunday, you’ll find me… With my little family. We usually spend the morning together, then my husband will entertain our one-year-old daughter, while I do some cleaning and make one of our favourite meals – my signature chermoula chicken is on high rotation.

AUTHENT I CALLY US

Emma & Mayowa Adeniyi 01.04.2023
WEDDING

What was your highlight of the day?

E mma : I loved the ceremony. Looking into each other’s eyes, saying our vows in such a beautiful setting, it was very intimate.

M ayowa : Having our family and friends from around the world celebrate with us and seeing very distinct cultures come together.

How did he propose?

E: We were slightly (very) hungover, New Year’s Day 2021, on the beach at Burleigh Heads after spending NYE at Rick Shores. Totally unexpected on my part, but such a beautiful moment and very real with lots of laughs.

Where and when did you meet?

E: At the Les Bubbles launch. We clicked immediately over our shared experiences moving to Australia from another country and started dating pretty much straight after.

M: We met at the opening of Les Bubbles in September 2015 through mutual friends. It’s also where we ended up having our engagement party.

Describe Deux Belettes and why you chose it?

E: We both love Europe, but we met in Australia, so we knew we wanted to get married here. Deux Belettes is the perfect blend of the two and so different to your typical Australian wedding venue. We knew from the beginning that our wedding wouldn’t look like most – and the venue seemed like a good match.

M: We wanted to originally have an overseas wedding, however Deux Belettes had everything we wanted for a European flair right here in Australia.

Was it a special personal touch to wear your own suits?

M: Yes – mainly because I couldn’t find the look I was going for anywhere else, so I had to make the vision happen myself. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do for myself and the groomsmen.

What was your favourite song to dance to at the after party?

E: My step-dad requested the DJ to play Wonderwall by Oasis. Everyone was dancing and singing along with their arms around each other, it’s one of my favourite memories from the day.

M: I’d agree with this as well. It was a very special moment with everyone.

If you could give any advice to your prewedding self, what would it be?

E: Everyone says this but it’s seriously true – take in every single moment, be present, and absorb as much as you can. It will go so fast!

M: Having a spreadsheet for everything is actually more fun than it sounds!

Three words to describe the special day?

E: Culture, love, and joy.

M: Family, friends, and fun.

EVENT STYLING

Party in style

Whether it’s a milestone or an excuse to bring your favourite people together, birthday celebrations are even better when styled. Themed birthdays, in particular, are growing in popularity. Whether you’re planning a disco-themed rodeo, an eclectic ABBA dance party, a 007 murder mystery, or a taco-filled Mexican fiesta, the styling of your event will make all the difference. Some fun props could include disco balls, a life-sized cactus, a James Bond silhouette, or even a giant popcorn box.

From the large props to the smaller details, the theming of your event should be carried throughout the venue. With hanging décor transforming the space, add lights for a twinkling photo backdrop and a disposable camera to capture the fun.

So, what are you waiting for? Life’s too short to not spend it dressed up! With over 25 years’ experience on the topic, leave it to the experts at The Prop House to design the birthday celebration of your dreams.

Secrets to success

The most asked question I’ve had in 40 years of teaching, counselling, and consulting is ‘what is the secret to success?’. I could answer this in a multitude of ways. Here are some traits that have led many to their definition of success.

Most people experience anxiety and insecurity about themselves, others, the world, the past, and the future. Those thoughts don’t need to be eliminated, but it is key to develop strategies to avoid overfocusing and following them down a rabbit hole. Remember, what you focus on, you amplify.

Back yourself! This is not about annoying cockiness, but a real confidence that comes from competence.

Dedicate yourself to learning some skills, knowing some stuff, and developing expertise in several domains.

The ability to resist temptation is critical, especially the desire to quit instead of persevering with difficult tasks, and delay gratification for as long as possible.

Hot tips for buyers and sellers

Whether you’re a first-time home buyer or a seasoned seller, there are a few key things to keep in mind as you navigate the market in 2023.

For buyers, one of the most important things to consider is your budget. It’s essential to have a clear understanding of what you can realistically afford. This may mean setting a firm budget before you start looking at properties or working with a real estate agent who can help you identify homes within your price range.

For sellers, the key to success in 2023 will be staying competitive in your market. It’s important to take steps to make your property stand out from the crowd. This may mean investing in some upgrades or renovations to improve the overall look and feel of your home or working with a skilled real estate agent.

By keeping an eye on market trends, staying in touch with real estate professionals, and remaining open to new opportunities, you can position yourself for success in this dynamic and ever-changing market.

STYLING TIPS with Mark Ferguson

Let’s all celebrate

As it is the birthday issue, let’s dive into what elements one should consider when wandering into such an event. Consider a velvet jacket but beware as it will continue to tempt each person upon inspection. A Donegal tweed jacket is a good option for the person who likes to waltz through the corridors and embolden their relaxed nature. A cashmere turtleneck, for those who enjoy the luxurious fabric whispering sweet nothings to their neck and the ultimate comfort. Boots, in a timeless leather, which confide confidence and make you look like you are stepping towards your next adventure. Scarves, the gentle weavers of warmth and rapture, which dance like the breeze around a willing neck. And yes, a hat is more than acceptable, as it could be rendered a piece of art.

Texture and layering are the keys to winter warmth and style, with each thread signifying the tapestry of the night. These elements of ensemble, pay subtle homage to the chronicles of stylishness, which one would expect from a birthday bash.

JEWELS

More precious than rubies

Fit for a king (or queen!), rubies have been a popular jewellery choice for years, and for good reason. The name comes from the Latin word ‘ruber’, meaning red –aka, the colour of love and passion. Whether it’s your wedding anniversary (did you know rubies are the traditional choice for 15th wedding anniversaries) or you just feel like treating yourself, there’s no better gift than ruby gemstone jewellery. Rings, necklaces, and more, there’s no shortage of stunning pieces on the market.

As rubies are the official gemstone of July, we thought it would only be fitting to list some of the fun facts about this popular gemstone:

• Ruby’s fiery, red colour is a result of trace amounts of chromium present in the crystal

• Did you know when placed in direct sunlight, they glow?

• If a ruby is too ‘pink’, it will be sold as a pink sapphire instead, both being varieties of the mineral corundum

• The most valuable rubies are a deep, vibrant red

• Rubies are considered to be the stone of love, passion, energy, and power.

VARICOSE VEINS with Dr Nicholas Kemp Sun’s

out, legs out

As it gets cold in Brisbane you may be fortunate enough to be chasing the sun to Europe. Even if only dreaming about Santorini or St Tropez, cabin conditions are not favourable to anyone’s legs! Should you have a family history of varicose veins or Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) then take these tips onboard:

• Pull-on compression: applying pressure to the legs helps stimulate your circulation. Travel socks can be bought at Departures, but if at risk you may consider getting Class 2 stockings measured to fit by a phlebologist

• Pack athleisure wear: once through the lounge and about to fly, change out of those jeans into loose clothing that doesn’t restrict

• Hydrate: drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic beverages and caffeine, the effects of which are made worse by the low humidity on planes

• Move: don’t forget to do your aeroplane exercises – walk up and down the aisles for five minutes every hour

• Skip the pill: taking tablets might help you sleep or reduce anxiety, but it will keep you sedentary. Discuss with your GP other choices for finding calm.

MINDFULNESS with Bhavna Megh

Relax and de-stress

Do you know that you’re overwhelmed? Most of us don’t. Most of us have become accustomed to stress. In fact, most of us accept high levels of stress as our norm.

The great thing is that our whole system is SO intelligent that it supports our crazy and stressful lives. That is until it doesn’t. A lot of us have had the experience of getting sick within a day or two of a much-needed holiday.

The truth is, it was highly unlikely that your holiday made you sick like most people believe. More likely it was your body finally releasing all the mental, emotional, and chemical toxins that it’s been storing whilst you’ve been operating in fight-or-flight mode.

So, what can you do? It’s simple, rest more often. Yes, it’s a lot easier said than done, but regular small self-care rituals can have a big impact and can have the result of an enjoyable holiday instead of one spent in bed.

Self-care rituals you can try include baths, massages, daily meditation, bike rides, ocean swims, and walks, etc. In addition, mindset, emotional, and energy-healing sessions with a practitioner like myself are a powerful way to reset. STEPPING

What the heck is a RETURN?

If you’re in your late 20s or have been thinking about your late 20s and reflecting on the existential crisis you experienced as you approached your 30th birthday, you may be wondering if it was written in the stars. Well, it was, and it was written by Saturn — more specifically, your Saturn return. Saturn returns have a reputation for being extremely difficult, so to help you navigate and understand yours, here’s everything you need to know.

What is it?

In astrology, every planet moves through the 12 zodiac signs. Astrologers use a person’s birth chart — a snapshot of the sky at the exact date, location, and time you were born — to discover where Saturn was located when they were born and when it will return to that exact location. It takes Saturn roughly 29.5 years to return to the position it was in when you were born, therefore your Saturn return usually begins around your 29th birthday. Saturn is the planet of boundaries, time, and responsibility. It’ll show you the areas of life where you’ll need to practise patience, and when you’ll need to roll up your sleeves and work a bit harder. It’s these traits that have built Saturn’s infamous reputation, as patience and persistence don’t come easy to everyone — but this is where your Saturn return comes in! Your Saturn return is all about teaching you how to navigate the tricky areas of life so you can move forward more confidently.

What happens?

Saturn returns tend to trigger a lot of life changes. The type of changes, however, will depend on where Saturn is in your birth chart. You could get engaged, get married, have a baby, change career paths, start a business, or move overseas — the possibilities are endless! You may also go through a breakup or lose your job, but any negative changes you experience only happen so you can make room for the better things that follow. It takes about three years for Saturn to move through each zodiac sign, so you may not experience any major life changes as soon as your Saturn return begins. Instead, you may find yourself feeling nostalgic and reflecting on significant changes you’ve already experienced in life and how they impacted you.

How to prepare

The best way to prep for your Saturn return is by generating your birth chart and discovering your Saturn’s specific location. The house Saturn is in will tell you what changes you may experience during your Saturn return, and the sign Saturn is in will explain how these changes may happen. For example, if Saturn was in your 10th house and in the sign of Gemini when you

were born, during your Saturn return, you may experience changes to your career and public image through conversations and information you share with other people. You can generate your birth chart online using your birth date, location, and time — the more exact your birth time is, the more exact your chart will be.

So, when it comes to Saturn returns, there’s nothing to worry about. By checking your birth chart and noting the sign and house your Saturn is in, you’ll feel more prepared for the changes this astrological transit will bring. It’ll be difficult at times, and you may feel like you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place, but by learning more about your birth chart, you’ll be ready to take on any changes Saturn throws your way.

DID YOU KNOW: IN ASTROLOGY, EVERY ZODIAC SIGN IS RULED BY A PLANET. SATURN IS THE TRADITIONAL RULER OF THE SIGNS CAPRICORN AND AQUARIUS.

A fresh way to fundraise

The Sapphire Committee are ready to bring a new level of elevation to fundraising in Brisbane, all in the name of paediatric medicine.

The Sapphire Committee are passionate about making a difference in the lives of sick children. They’re pulling out all the stops to create innovative and luxurious fundraising experiences to support the Children’s Hospital Foundation and contribute to the enhancement of paediatric medicine.

When the Children’s Hospital Foundation welcomed new leadership, they saw an opportunity to increase their reach through more elegant forms of fundraising. This led to the foundation approaching Alexandra Graham, to create a new committee of passionate Queenslanders, to help raise awareness and funds for the Queensland Children’s Hospital. Alexandra is currently the chair of The Sapphire Committee

and says everything started in true Brisbane fashion – through a solid community network.

The Children’s Hospital Foundation works to raise critical funds for the Queensland Children’s Hospital that go towards world-leading research, cutting edge equipment, and on the ground support for patients and their families. Alexandra says this is what drew her to help build The Sapphire Committee, “We truly have the power to impact and change paediatric medicine not just for our special little people at the hospital today, but on a global scale.”

The Sapphire Committee go about raising these critical funds by planning exquisite events where attendees are not only able to donate, but also participate in grand fundraising rituals. “At our

recent Sapphire Supper Club, we launched the Sapphire Vault – selling ‘vault codes’ to a stunning A.G. Designer Jeweller diamond and green sapphire ring. One code cracked the vault, and a lucky donor took the piece home. We also had a caviar and vodka cart, with all proceeds raised donated to the Foundation,” Alexandra says.

The Sapphire Committee aims to raise $400,000 for the Queensland Children’s Hospital with their Inaugural Sapphire Gala on October 12. With just under half of the funds raised, the committee is well on their way to reaching this goal. However, the Sapphire Committee is devoted to the advancement of children’s medicine and hopes to continue raising valuable funds long after their initial goal is reached.
