alk, walk fashion baby! We’ve just come off the back of Brisbane Fashion Festival (an event we were truly lucky to have happened here in Brissy) and hopped straight into our September Fashion Issue. Not only did we get to dip into Sanctuary Cove’s umpteen resort-style fashion brands this month, but we also interviewed sartorial standouts in the industry such as Mahalia Handley (page 15) – a true role model when it comes to being your own real self. I also had the pleasure of interviewing 10 local leaders in business in our 10 Under 40 feature (page 17) from Getaway presenter Shaun Birley to 12time restaurant owner Giorgina Venzin. Bite into all that and more!

EDITOR’S NOTE

A

ah, the first of September. For most of us, it heralds the start of warm weather, endless blue skies, and getting out and about in our glorious city, the Goldie, and Sunny Coast. However, for the fashion lover, it’s a whole lot more than that. It’s like letting a kid loose in a candy shop with new trends, fresh fashion directions, and a season that inspires experimentation in our sartorial choices. At Style we work months ahead, scouring fashion forecasting sites and our fave international influencers for our fashion insights. Already there’s a steady flow of parcels coming through the door at Style HQ – we really can’t resist the allure of a fresh drop. On this month’s cover (photographed at InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort), gorgeous local model Grace Hayden perfectly sums up where we all want to be – poolside, looking glamorous, with a cocktail. It was the perfect Queensland day – sparkling blue water, luxury yachts in the marina, beautiful fashion, and accessories to play with – even a couple of friendly kangaroos lazing in the sun. All in all, a lovely change of pace for a Monday and a taste of sun-soaked days to come.

or me, like many people in hospitality, my career was born out of not loving what I was doing at the time. I was studying human movement and was going to start physiotherapy when I realised it wasn’t the path I wanted to be on. In my early 20s, I was lucky enough to live in Europe and it was here I fell in love with European service. I discovered that I loved the way that food brings people together – you can have a drink with anyone but sharing a meal with someone, well that’s truly special. Once I settled back into Brisbane, my journey into hospitality started through music and its importance in a restaurant. I really believe that the feeling that good music evokes is as important as the food, drinks, service, and lighting. Our five venues were opened with co-founders Frank Li, Ben Williamson, and my now partner Bianca Marchi – we all have such different strengths in business, however, we align with direction, expansion, and ethics. Frank and I became friends through our avid love of house music – I still haven’t gotten over Last Night by Bassfort – while Ben Williamson and I became mates 8

over a love of wine. I was lucky enough to meet my partner Bianca Marchi in Brisbane over seven years ago and we became great friends before falling in love. As cliché as it might sound, for us, we are only as good as our last service, so we are constantly tweaking our offerings and ensuring we have great training in place. If our customers leave happy, we have succeeded. Our industry has been overlooked in Brisbane for some time, but there are so many great operators focused on delivering world-class experiences, and there is a really healthy competition that pushes us all to be better. I have been very fortunate to have great mentors in my life who have helped guide me through the ups and downs of owning my own business, however, one piece of advice that has always stuck with me was from a friend, Haesley, who said: “If you act like you are untouchable, pretty soon no one wants to touch you.” Many people might not know I was actually born in Melbourne, though I’ve called Brisbane home since I was five. What I love most about living and working in this city is hands-down the people. We have the ambitions of people from a large city with small town morals. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

Marcia Hines is returning to Brisbane with a boogie wonderland in tow. By FIONA WILLIAMS

I

n 2004 she blessed our screens with kindness in Australian Idol, then the stage in Jesus Christ Superstar (not to mention her breakout role in Hair the musical in the 70s), now, she’s blowing the disco dust off her sequins to bring Velvet Rewired to life. We sat down (virtually of course) with the one-and-only Marcia Hines to talk about nerves, favourite moments from the 70s, and the secret to ageless beauty. We’re so excited to hear you are heading to Brisbane’s Wynnum Fringe Festival in November with Velvet Rewired! How are you feeling about the show? I’m very excited! It’s always wonderful working in the Spiegeltent, it just has a very magical vibe about it. What makes it ‘Rewired’? First, there was Velvet and a few years later Velvet Rewired was created. Somewhat the same as Velvet but further on in time, it’s slightly different and extremely exciting. There’s no doubt the show oozes a euphoric dose of disco – what’s your favourite memory of the 70s music scene? My favourite memory of the disco era was coming home from being on tour, hooking up with my girlfriends and exchanging clothing for a night out on the town. What is it like performing with the other vocalists, aerialists, and acrobats? Performing with the cast in Velvet Rewired is extremely exciting. Before Velvet or Velvet Rewired I hadn’t worked with circus performers or physical acts before and it’s been a great lesson in kindness, trust, and teamwork.

What was it like to run away with the circus? I always wanted to run away with the circus – just like most kids I’d say! And lo and behold, here I am! It’s good to hear the oohs and aahs that come from the audience while watching some of the daring acts. Let’s turn the beat around – from Hair to Jesus Christ Superstar, what is it like performing in this show compared to the others? It’s totally unhinged compared to the theatrical stage shows that I once did. Having said that, I’ve learnt so much from all the shows that I’ve done. What is your favourite way to energize the audience? There’s a lot to be said about the energy that exudes from an audience and it’s terribly contagious in the sense of when the audience is having a great time, I’m having an even better one. I’m reflecting their own energy back at them. You’ve been working since you were 16, what are the biggest career lessons you have learned along the way? My biggest career lesson has been that you get out of work what you put in. Do you get nervous before going out on stage? In my humble opinion, if you don’t get nervous before you do anything that’s important to you, something’s wrong. I’m quite pleased to say that yes, I do get very nervous before I go on stage. I find a quiet place to be for a while beforehand. SEPTEMBER 2021

What is something that people generally wouldn’t know about you? I make mosaics. I smash things up and put them back together in my own way! You have been called The Queen of Pop for harnessing incredible performances… we would like to award you the queen of flawless skin for appearing to not age a day! What are your beauty secrets?! Thank you for your compliment! I think one of the most important things is to start taking care of your skin around the age of 14. I was always taught this, and I never go to bed with makeup on however tired I am. I use soap and water, nothing special, and I drink lots and lots and lots of water. I’m a pescatarian, I’m not a drinker or a smoker, and exercise is a very important thing in my life. What are you most looking forward to about the Wynnum Fringe Festival and opening Velvet Rewired in the Spiegeltent? I’m looking forward to spending some time with my friend Tom Oliver who was the creator of the Wynnum Fringe Festival last year and I couldn’t be prouder of him. Not to mention getting some beautiful Queensland sun rays while I’m there. And finally, where will we find you in Brisbane when you’re not performing? (any places you’re looking forward to visiting?) I look forward to visiting Kangaroo Point and the shoreline areas of that part of Brisbane. You guys have a beautiful city!

IT’S IN THE BAG You may not know her, but Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Hailey Bieber sure do, and they have this fashion bounty hunter on speed dial. By ASTRID TAEMETS

S

he’s the 27-year-old Rockhampton girl who boasts a call contact list that includes Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley and Hailey Bieber, DMs with the likes of Sofia Richie, Chiara Ferragni, and the Kardashians, and has amassed a devoted (and rather wealthy), portfolio of international clients all on the hunt for sold-out luxury fashion items that can’t be found for love nor money, except only by her. Meet Gabriel Waller. A modest, young, and bright entrepreneur who shot to business stardom in December 2018 when a mutual friend put her in touch with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley after the UK model and actress put a desperate call out on Instagram in search of a 2017 Celine coat by Phoebe Philo. In record time, Waller, who had only launched her sourcing business just months earlier, tracked down the coat and sent it off, no strings attached. Grateful for the find, the British beauty swiftly posted a picture on Instagram wearing the coat, and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, Waller is the personal shopper and direct touchpoint for celebrities and mortals all desperate to get their hands on

the latest can’t-be-found ‘it pieces’ from brands such as Prada, Balenciaga, Celine, Bottega Veneta and Chanel, just to name a few. You name it, she’ll find it. It’s the thrill of the chase that keeps this budding young businesswoman buzzing. Currently based in Sydney (though with plans to move to LA later this month), Waller is at the top of her game, with multiple assistants scattered across the globe, including two full-time assistants in Australia, all filtering between 100-200 requests from around the world daily. And yet, despite her exploding success, Waller is still as kind-hearted as ever. In her interview with Style, on the other end of the line, I can feel her face is beaming. “At the end of the day, I’m just an Aussie girl with big dreams,” she says, adding that her biggest sale to date only happened in the week of this interview. “I just sourced a wedding dress for a client worth over $50,000. It’s definitely the highest-priced item I have found yet.” Certainly an exciting feat, Gab is proof that if you can dream it, you can do it. @GABWALLERDOTCOM

UNDER BNE’S BUSINESS LEADERS There’s no denying that Brisbane is on the up when it comes to development, retail, hospitality, and more. Meet some of the locals contributing to our thriving River City and commit these names to memory – these are the businesspeople you need to know.

Michael Tassis If you’ve ever enjoyed a fine dining experience at one of Brisbane’s famed waterside restaurants including: George’s Paragon Brisbane, Rico Bar & Dining, Fatcow Steak & Lobster, Massimo Restaurant, and Opa Bar + Mezze, the man you have to thank for the indulgent food, fabulous service, and aesthetic interiors is none other than Michael Tassis. Describing himself as driven, focused, and family oriented (without taking himself too seriously), the owner of the Tassis Group is famed for bringing cosmopolitan dining to our food and entertaining scene. From his childhood working alongside his father, through to developing an independent passion for opening his own venues, one thing is abundantly clear about Michael; he is passionate about the hospitality industry and is focused on creating venues that bring people together. With his Greek background and penchant for creating abundant menus with food designed to be shared and enjoyed, the awards and accolades have come in thick and fast over the years. But all of that aside, it’s his humble and simple approach to life that sums up his ethos beautifully. “I try to be grateful for everything that is good in my life. I put my head down and work hard, but also try to take some time to enjoy the important things in life, like family and friends.” And with the hospitality industry only going from strength to strength, you can bet that Michael Tassis will be at the forefront of it all.

“NOTHING COMES EASY IN LIFE, IF YOU WANT SOMETHING, YOU NEED TO WORK HARD. DON’T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER AND CHASE WHATEVER DREAM YOU HAVE!”

BNE’S BUSINESS LEADERS

Shaun Birley Describing himself as a “high energy optimist with constant FOMO”, eternal creative and opportunist Shaun Birley is a Brisbane local you’ll want to keep your eye on. His natural flair for business started fresh out of high school, with a logistics job at DHL that would inevitably set him up for a successful career in e-commerce and international fashion distribution, implementing and developing an online logistics platform for SME’s (Webship by InXpress) that compares all express logistics carriers at once – it’s basically the Webjet of shipping! And in a complete aboutturn, Shaun’s resumé doesn’t stop there, counting travel photographer, ambassador for Qantas, and Getaway tv host amongst his many achievements – safe to say there’s no shortage of ambition for this Brissy local. It’s this determination and natural creative instinct that’s seen him travel extensively throughout Europe, the USA, and Asia – trips that would ultimately allow him to grab the attention of tourism boards and bring 100k+ followers along for the ride on social media. Not too shabby, right? Looking forward, he hopes to enjoy more business success alongside his two childhood best friends, continue supporting local business right here in Brisbane, and if all else fails, default to his favourite adage for life “bite off more than you can chew, and chew like hell!”

“I FIND THAT BEING AROUND PEOPLE WHO LOVE WHAT THEY DO HAS A STRONG INFLUENCE ON YOUR MINDSET AND SUCCESS IN THE INDUSTRY.”

Giorgina Venzin Growing up watching her dad sell curry paste at the New Farm Farmers markets, Giorgina was just 14 years old when her dad purchased the bustling Camp Hill restaurant, Mons Ban Sabai Thai – the Venzin family abode where she spent her teenage years working part-time. Throughout school and university, Giorgina gained valuable experiences working as a waitress and maître d’, before she graduated from the University of Queensland with a degree in Business, specialising in Hospitality and Events. While it was always her dream to move to New York and pursue a career in event management, it was back on her home soil where she knew she was going to follow her own personal business dreams. Now in her 30s, Giorgina has opened 12 different venues in the last 10 years, with Brisbane-favourites Pawpaw Cafe, Melrose, Darvella Patisserie and more, joining her never-ending list of establishments under her belt. Undeniably, Giorgina’s passion for progressive food culture has helped shape some of Brisbane’s most-loved establishments, with each one offering a unique experience to the next. It’s not difficult to see that innovation is at the forefront of her work, as she and her team are constantly changing and re-imagining these venues so that guests will always experience something entirely new. “PROVIDING AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE FOR OUR CLIENTS AND HELPING THEM FIND PIECES THAT THEY WILL CHERISH FOR A LIFETIME IS WHY I LOVE COMING TO WORK EVERY DAY.”

Andrew McKinney Welch Ask any Brisbane local in the know, and they’ve likely heard the name McKinney. With a long-standing history in the jewellery industry, the McKinney family story is woven into the fabric of our great city. And fifth generation businessman, Andrew McKinney Welch, is at the forefront of it all. Describing himself as driven, caring, passionate, and with an infectious positive outlook on life, Andrew’s job title can’t be summed up in one simple way. His history in the business is one filled with family and legacy. He began working with his grandfather, John McKinney and his aunt, Margot McKinney, as soon as he left school, and he’s never looked back. In fact, it’s the special bond with his grandfather that led him to pursue a career in jewellery, which has since seen him gain experience in world class retail outlets such as Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman in New York, sourcing gemstones at international trade shows in Hong Kong, and of course, working alongside his family to coordinate high-end client experiences at their Brisbane store. Now, as a current gemmologist student at the Gemological Institute of America, it’s safe to say Andrew’s place as a top Brisbane business leader is only just beginning to shine. @ANDREWMCKINNEY_WELCH

Andrew Craig Spending his early childhood in a rural town, by the time Andrew Craig was 12, he had sold his first computer, and by his teenage years, he’d already turned over $1 million – all from his parents’ garage. A true business entrepreneur in every sense, this Founder and CEO is the proud owner of Laser Clinics Australia in Brisbane, Mr Mista, and most recently, Chatti.com. And with his keen business sense being attributed to keeping an eye on trends and always trusting his gut instincts, Andrew’s pragmatic approach has seen him achieve dizzying heights with his various endeavours. With a never-give-up attitude and total resilience to break through any obstacle, he puts his success down to a life that’s surrounded by people with similar core family values and attitude for empowering people towards success. “I get a natural high from building a business from start to finish. The challenge of being able to navigate through providing the highest level of products and services for our people, the team, and customers who have all become my extended family,” he says. And if all that wasn’t enough for this new-age mover and shaker, he’s also a Director of the Valley Chamber of Commerce, and an ambassador for the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust – one to watch? We think so. @ANDREWDCRAIG

Passionate about getting out what you put in and remembering to always find motivation in the challenging times, to Courtney, it’s not just about the simple act of selling a home, but the entire process from start to finish. From choosing and overseeing the marketing campaigns, to styling, negotiating contracts, and being a part of the customer experience, she counts herself extremely lucky to not only sell phenomenal property, but work alongside some incredible people, too. Kobie Allison Psychology was a perfect fit for Kobie Allison, who says she’s always been inspired by the resilience of humanity, and believes in growth and creating beauty from ashes. At 37, Kobie is the Director of Modern Minds, a modern mental health care practice, but behind the scenes, she’s a creative at heart and thrives on juggling multiple projects. As a busy mum to her daughter Willow, she’s also working on a fashion label that will fund a charity for solo mothers, writing a TV series, and teaching her daughter to surf – between ‘cino dates of course. It’s an impressive to-do list for an already busy young mum, but for Kobie, she says she’s always been passionate about leaving a lasting, positive impact on the world, and hopes to inspire others to live with a purpose greater than self. Living by the life motto ‘love over fear’, she says like anyone, she has had her own life wounds, but they only inspire her to use them to grow. Finding the right path is crucial, according to Kobie, who encourages people to stay away from limiting beliefs in what they think they ‘should’ do and instead focus on doing what brings you alive. Alongside a lot of tenacity, Kobie says Brisbane gave her the opportunity to live her life according to her own values and dreams, and with a sea change on the horizon, she says she’s looking forward to starting and ending each day at the beach with her “number one girl”.

“I WONDER WHAT OUR WORLD WOULD LOOK LIKE IF IT PLACED COMPASSION AND PERSPECTIVE‑TAKING AT ITS CENTRE. I HOPE THE ‘ONES TO WATCH’ IN FUTURE ARE THE ONES DRIVEN TO MAKE THE WORLD BETTER AND NOT JUST ME MYSELF AND I.”

Tiffany Cooper When Tiffany Cooper won the Ekka modelling competition at the tender age of 15, she quickly realised her passion lay behind the scenes of the industry, rather than in front of the lens. Describing herself as a seeker of sunshine and lover of the ocean, Tiffany’s extensive career history also paints her as an experience collector. From managing Video Ezy as a teen to becoming the owner and director of Nikkou Store – a clothing store featuring Australian fashion and lifestyle brands – she says each and every job was a piece of a puzzle that has led her to where she is today. The now 30-yearold knew early on that she wanted to create something that was all hers, crediting her work ethic to her parents – a hairdresser mum and electrician father. After a six-year stint managing the video store, Tiffany kicked off her fashion industry education studying fashion business and a business degree a few years later. From here, she tackled numerous roles at fashion retailers including Myer, Country Road, her first full-time role as a manager at Zara, and finally her dream job – the wholesale manager for Zulu & Zephyr in Byron Bay. For Tiffany, it was this real-life experience of running a business that catapulted her to launch Nikkou Store. Having now officially been running a business longer through a pandemic, than not, she says the experience has taught her resilience, despite the temptation to give up. Her best ever career advice seems incredibly fitting – never take no for an answer, there is always another way around a roadblock.

“THE UMPTEEN ROLES I’VE HAD IN MY CAREER ARE ALL PIECES OF A PUZZLE THAT HAVE HELPED BUILD WHAT I HAVE ACHIEVED TODAY.”

Taylor Fielding Starting one business in the midst of a pandemic might have seemed too risky for most, but not for influencer Taylor Fielding – the director of TFM Digital – who started two and bought a new apartment while he was at it. The Brisbane local’s actions speak volumes about his life motto, “take the risk! Lean on your networks and seek advice.” With over 10 years’ experience in the media industry, Taylor says he saw the need for a trusted media advisor to help guide businesses through strategy and media buying without the price tag of traditional agencies, and so TFM Digital – an agency specialising in the franchise sector – was born at the tail end of 2020. After almost a year in business, Taylor says it’s the companies he works with that continue to drive and inspire him. Just six months after starting TFM, he and his partner were contemplating buying a house, but with the market skyrocketing he says their ambitious spirit prompted them to tackle another challenge instead, with the pair franchising City Cave Float & Wellness Centre. While it’s been a year of ups and downs, the media maven says he’s embraced the good and the bad of starting a new business, and jokes that for the rest of the year he’ll be busy “taking over the world”, buying a house and replanning his wedding in New Zealand – for the fourth time.

“THERE IS SO MUCH INNOVATION AND OPPORTUNITY IN BRISBANE AS WELL AS SUCH A SUPPORTIVE NETWORK OF YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS AND BUSINESS OWNERS.”

Joedy Kyle Most find it hard to believe that Joedy Kyle, Creator and Director of Joedy’s Cafe New Farm, and Joedy’s by Eminence, is only 26 years old. Even harder yet to believe he opened his first business venture just one week before the very first Brisbane lockdown in March 2020. From scrubbing dishes at 13, to directing two successful small businesses by his mid-twenties, Joedy has had to prove himself in the industry since the beginning. It comes as no surprise that amidst managing twenty staff, Joedy thrives on stressful situations that others shy away from. Holding Brisbane close to his heart, the community support has been fundamental to his success and growth at such a turbulent time. Specialising in serving locally sourced, sustainable produce, their enticing all-day brunch menu is inspired by South-East Asia cuisine and culture. Revamping these classics with phenomenal local ingredients, they’re able to help other small businesses grow through their produce selection and the sale of artisan products in their retail section. With a private rooftop event space launching next month at Joedy’s by Eminence, and whispers of a third East Brisbane location set for completion in mid 2022, there’s lots to look forward to from Joedy Kyle. @_JOEDYKYLE_

Leonard Joel Take a look at not just Paddington’s, but one of Australia’s most established auction houses. Specialising in curated auctions since 1919, working closely with fine jewels, timepieces, fine art, decorative arts, modern design, prints, and luxury is no new task to Australia’s premier auction house, Leonard Joel. Constantly encountering a diversity of treasures, Leonard Joel’s Representative Specialist for Queensland, Troy McKenzie, knows that each and every piece has its own story. During their Important Jewels Auction in August, an exquisite three stone diamond ring, known as a ‘trilogy ring’, was sold for a casual $35,000. But the true beauty of this traditional three stone design lies not in its value, but in its meaning – it represents the past, present, and future. With it being so rare to discover original antiques these days, the allure and charm of old mine cut diamonds carry a historical story like no other, recalling the skill and dedication of the craftsman who created it by hand. A pioneer in this industry, McKenzie feels incredibly fortunate to discover jewels each day. “I get a great deal of fulfilment from getting to expand my knowledge when coming into contact with the wide variety of objects I’m presented with. There’s always the excitement of the next great thing – what will it be?” he says. LEONARD JOEL 201 LATROBE TCE, PADDINGTON TROY MCKENZIE P 0412 997 080 LEONARDJOEL.COM.AU

THE LOWDOWN ON LIFTS The new facelift that won’t see you under the knife, thanks to The Skin Lab.

Benefits of Silhouette Soft:

I

f you’ve been feeling as though a year of video calls has made you analyse your skin more than ever, you’re not alone. Never have we stared more at our own appearance through laptops, computers, and smartphones, subsequently noticing areas of our skin that may not have bothered us before. There is now increasing interest to fix and rejuvenate the expressions we catch ourselves making on-screen that we don’t like – especially with non-invasive procedures that are long-lasting. Filling the gap between facelifts and non-invasive revitalisation such as fillers and Botox is the latest phenomenon, threads.

What are threads? • Threads are used to lift loose or sagging skin around the eyes, cheeks, chin, jaw, and jowls. • They are delicately woven underneath the sub-dermis to act as ‘scaffolding’ beneath the skin. • Medical anaesthetic is applied so minimal discomfort is felt during the procedure.

If you’ve experienced or researched threads before, you might have heard of MINT, APTOS, PDO, or the brand ‘Happy Lift’. Each thread product comes with slightly different merits, but across the board, the technology achieves results that only a surgical facelift would’ve achieved just a decade ago. To put it simply, threads are the hottest thing in facial rejuvenation right now. One place with a reputation for outstanding threads in Brisbane is The Skin Lab – a favourite procedure of Medical Director, Dr Heather Jenkins, who has had years of experience helping men and women achieve great results. The secret to this success? According to Dr Jenkins, it’s her belief in the threads she chooses, Silhouette Soft. “It’s a scientifically-backed, leadingedge beauty solution, with some clear advantages over its competitors,” she says. “And the results are there for all to see.”

SEPTEMBER 2021

• Your skin has time to produce the right collagen, type 1. This is the collagen that you want because it replicates the collagen we are born with – the type that makes us look younger. Silhouette Soft boosts your skin’s natural volumising abilities, giving you regenerative effects that keep coming for weeks after treatment. • Silhouette Soft threads last longer. Because of their ability to be absorbed more slowly giving the body a chance to create type 1 collagen, the longevity of the result is also maximised. • They use cones instead of barbs. The threads stay in place with the help of ‘bi-directional cones’. These are very small cones dotted along the thread. They provide extremely secure anchors for supporting skin tissues and holding your enhancement in place. • No plastics, no toxins. They’re made of PLA (polylactic acid), an all-natural dissolvable substance sourced from biomatter. Hi Jocelyn, we’re very excited to chat to you about your personal ethos, career, Chanel, and being a mum. But let’s start at the beginning. Your early childhood was… very busy! I was the third of four children and my parents both worked long hours. Having said that, our household was very organised and I really thrived in a structured, ordered environment, which I think has stuck with me all my life. Aside from a strong work ethic, my parents instilled in me the idea of meticulous attention to detail. They always advocated for appreciating the simple things – there was a real connectedness to my family life. I was particularly close with my dad, and I think that idea of close connection – and how important that is – has always been with me too. Speaking of your dad, it was his approach to health, wellness, and beauty that instilled in you the ideals of self-care as… being holistic. Some of that could be cultural to an extent – he’s Maltese but grew up in Egypt – so I think some of his philosophies probably come from not being from here. Australia, especially in those years, was a real Sorbolene nation (yes, I mean the cream), so I was lucky that he had his own ideas. Even as a really small child, he taught me to finish a shower with a cold rinse, to cover my body with oil after bathing, and scrub my skin smooth with sand every visit to the beach. I also got patience from him, which is something that is integral to success, especially in this business which relies on caring for others. Fundamentally, I’m a nurturer, and I am that way because it’s how he was with me. Your vision for the iconic Jocelyn Petroni flagship boutique in Woollahra has always been… for my clients to feel like they’re at a Michelin Star restaurant, where the menu and the service is world-class. I want them to feel like we’re not just giving them what they tell us they want, but what

we know they need. Of course, I want it to be a sensory experience, but I also want them to feel the genuine care from a therapist who can prescribe something completely customised to them, which also delivers results they can see as well as feel. And I want those results to be in skin, yes, but also generally their wellbeing too. It’s a tall order, but that’s my aim with every single client.

QUICK Q’S WITH JP My favourite Jocelyn Petroni treatment is… without a doubt, the Heart Chakra Signature Facial.

My three desert island skincare products are…

The one business decision you look back on proudly is… a real sense of unfaltering selfbelief. Of course, there are constant challenges in having your own business. I feel as if I am starting from the ground up most days! But by working hard and staying true to your gut and your philosophies, you can’t go wrong.

Mesoestetic’s tinted SPF, Vida Glow Marine Collagen – because it does (almost) everything, and La Mer Crème de la Mer.

When you were named the official manicurist for Chanel Australia in 2015 (and now globally – congrats!) you felt… honoured, of course. But also validated. This was at a time when acrylic nails and cartoon nail art were at an all-time high. I didn’t buy into the trends – I stayed true to my aesthetic and have only ever done really classic, feminine nails – and to this day, that sometimes affects which celebrity clients I can work with. But, the appointment with Chanel was reinforcement for me that sticking to what I believe is the most beautiful way to do nails was respected by a global beauty powerhouse.

Emblematique – it’s a classic, feminine, deep red – perfect on a nice, neat, short nail.

My go-to polish is… always Chanel

The traits I hope to pass on to my daughter are… patience and kindness, in equal parts.

A typical day as a business owner, mum, and Chanel manicurist for Australia looks… different every day! I think any mother (and business owner, for that matter), will tell you that there is no typical day. But I do get up at 5am every morning. I like everything done, bed made, all of that, before my daughter wakes up, so that the time I spend with her is just being together. Then of course, there might be events or meetings with Chanel, time I spend with my staff and the corporate side of having a business too. Right now, I am most excited to be working on the website – we are launching product online at jocelynpetroni.com which is a really personal curation of only the greatest products that I love and use. It’s going to be beautiful! SEPTEMBER 2021

ASTRID’S RUNNING MEDILOGIC IN-SHOE PRESSURE MEASUREMENT

S

upport comes in all shapes and sizes, but one that can often be overlooked is wearing the right fitting shoes! Whether we’re scrambling to pick up the kids, running errands, exercising, or rushing to meetings, the one constant is the pressure our feet are under every day. With that, many of us are guilty of scarcely making it easier on ourselves by squeezing them into ill-fitting, non-supportive shoes. Given what they do for us every day, our feet are incredibly resilient, which often means any niggling pains are palmed off. But, what we often forget is just how much of an impact feet troubles have on the entire body, having a flow-on effect to our knees, hips, and spine – just to name a few. Some of the most common issues people experience – and put up with

– are corns, calluses, and heel pain, while high heel addicts may experience issues with lower back pain, bunions, and other painful forefoot conditions. Identifying how our feet are coping with the everyday pressure early on, may mean we’re able to make a few small changes to prevent more serious issues later. Rest assured, it doesn’t mean giving up the high heels or compromising on style. While we love a comfy flat or cushy sneaker as much as the next person, let’s be honest, it’s unlikely we’ll be scrapping our high heels any time soon. So, Andrew Barlow and Tom Brough from QLD Orthotics & Podiatry showed us the nifty technology they use to monitor the pressure points in feet, gauging how they’re affected in different shoes and situations throughout the day. The Medilogic system is an in-shoe pressure measurement tool, which records the forces per square centimetre and shows which areas are copping too much pressure and what problems and effects this could be having on your body. To take the technology to the test, our journalist Astrid took the team through a typical day. From going for a morning run, heading to a client meeting, then picking up the little one from childcare and settling at home for a cuppa – a regular day that can take its toll on a busy mum’s feet. With the help of the Medilogic, QLD Orthotics & Podiatry are able to understand, scope, and reduce how much pressure is on the foot. With over 25 years of experience, Andrew and Tom can help redistribute these high forces through in-shoe padding or the manufacture of a custom orthotic device to move across footwear. Essentially, they’re able to pick the right shoe for the right activity. The good news? It’s ok to don the heels and still be comfortable with this team on the right foot. Thriving through lockdown

Legs on show

If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the past two years, it’s to expect the unexpected, and the better we deal with change and ambiguity, the superior our wellbeing. Regular, significant changes have been tough because humans need stability. Resilience research has identified the steps we can learn to bounce through restrictions, distancing, and ever-changing times. The prescription for thriving through lockdowns includes: • Maintain a positive, optimistic attitude. • Reframe negative, stressful thoughts. • Remind yourself what’s important. • Connect with resilient role models. • Face your fears and learn about yourself. • Develop sustainable coping skills. • Establish and nurture supportive social networks. • Prioritise your physical wellbeing. • Stimulate your brain by quality self-help reading. • Always play to your strengths. It’s only through getting better at reflecting on feelings, thoughts, and behaviours that you can change them and increase resilience.

Living in Brisbane we are very fortunate to have a climate that means we can wear shorts or skirts across the seasons! For those living with noticeable veins on their legs, their choice of clothing is limited as they can feel self-conscious about their appearance and so chose to hide them under trousers or maxis. For others, they might not have issues with the look, but instead suffer from symptoms such as aching, swelling, and restless leg. Which can often be exasperated during the heat of summer making our Queenslander lifestyle something to be dreaded rather than enjoyed. Regardless of if the procedures were medical or cosmetic initially, when patients attend their final review following the successful conclusion of treatment, we often hear it said that they wished they had come in years ago! Being proactive about your venous health and booking a consultation can help avoid future skin damage, or it may give you the confidence to ditch the sarong this year at Noosa! Spring Valor at BFF

Is maskne the same as acne?

At the Brisbane Fashion Festival in August, Wil Valor launched their spring summer collection, with the showcase being a spectacular tribute to bespoke style for men and women. In the spirit of spring, the collection is filled with the vibrance and versatility of the effortless. Opting for fabrics and forms with a playful energy, it’s the eye-catching details of the pieces that show the art of bespoke tailoring. The collection has a character for all, with a fresh take on elegant bridal wear, bold print textiles, and modern casuals. Outfits were accompanied by accessories from the Wil Valor range, McKinney’s Jewellery, Natalie Jane Millinery, Alan Pinkus, and Bouquet Boutique. The collection inspires with exciting elements that make suiting a celebration of life in all its moments, from the everyday to special occasions. In tailoring garments with finesse, it’s the passion for craftsmanship and imaginative design that makes Wil Valor stand out from the crowd, season after season.

Wearing a mask for Covid prevention? Big yes. Getting acne from wearing a mask. No, thank you. While they prevent us from Covid symptoms, masks are not so great for acne. Acne is a condition where oil glands of the skin become clogged, forming pimples and sometimes cysts – it’s the overproduction of the skin’s grease, aka: sebum. So, do we treat ‘Maskne’ different to normal acne? In order to control acne, good skin care is vital. The Skin Lab’s HydraFacial eliminates dirt, oil, dead skin cells, and clogged pores – replacing them with refreshing nutrients and hydration. So, mask or no mask, there is so much that can be done to help you look and feel confident in your skin.

MANE ATTRACTION More than just a hair appointment, EdwardsAndCo is a haven for those craving beautiful locks and heartwarming interaction. By ASTRID TAEMETS

I

f you’re chasing a salon experience like no other, there’s only one place to seek it: EdwardsAndCo. A bright, breezy, light-filled space found along the Ada Lane precinct in Fortitude Valley, it is the largest outlet of the EdwardsAndCo chain. A 40-chair salon, it’s the eighth national space for Jaye Edwards, with other salons sprawled across Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast, Byron Bay, and a two-seater at W Brisbane. Not bad for a kid from rural New South Wales. The Fortitude Valley sanctuary is undisputedly a lavish expression of the brand’s aesthetic, and one that I was fortunate enough to visit on a sunny Thursday morning for a little pamper session all in the name of work (tough gig, hey?). Designed by Amanda Jarvis, the enormous 350-square-metre marbled floor space complete with Brian Connolly artwork, a loft, and extending concrete verandah dripping in greenery simulates the casual luxury of the area that boasts some of Brisbane’s most popular restaurants, bars, luxury designer shops, and The Calile Hotel. On this particular occasion, my locks were left in the capable hands of haircutter and stylist extraordinaire, Jaiden Ogden, who transformed my flat, lifeless (and somewhat greasy) mop into a breezy, bouncy, casually elegant work of art with just a few flicks of his wrist, carefully placed product, and a little zhuzhing. Arriving ever so slightly late for my appointment, Jaiden greeted me with a welcoming smile and charisma, not hesitating to take my coat, before helping my flustered self settle in with a complimentary tea. Bless. Jaiden made the whole process seem effortless, though,

despite his encouragement, I’d have trouble imitating this at home. Nevertheless, the pro revealed his secrets, allowing me insight into how to recreate this look on my own with clear instructions that even the most novice stylist could follow. The attitude of the staff at EdwardsAndCo is one that makes you feel at home as if you are just making conversation with an old friend you haven’t seen in a while. This disposition is crucial to the success of the salon’s long-standing reputation as one of the leading figures in Australian hairdressing. Polite, conversational, and humbly stylish in every aspect, an appointment here isn’t just an exchange of services, but a catch up with a mate, and good hair is just the cherry on top. SANDWICH GENIUSES DANNYBOYS ARE COMING TO BRENDALE There are sandwich artists and there are sandwich geniuses, and in Brisbane we have a genius in our midst.

F

rom the Ruebens of New York and the classic Ploughmans of the UK to mouth-watering Banh Mis in Vietnam, while we all do it slightly differently, there’s no denying that there are few things in the world as universal as a good old sandwich. Professional chef Daniel McKennariey was living the dream, travelling all over the USA, Europe, and the Caribbean as a private chef on superyachts and estates, when he realised the exotic cuisines all had one thing in common – the love of a great sandwich! It was here that his vision for DannyBoys began. By April 2011, Daniel had perfected a collection of token

sandwich recipes – his ‘Rockstars’ – and decided it was time to share them with the locals. It didn’t take long for word of his sandwich genius to spread, and the shop soon became a staple eatery on the Brisbane food scene. From classic delights like ham, cheese, and lettuce to more deluxe gourmet sandwiches, like the four meat ‘big boy’ – there is no denying Daniel has a talent for crafting sandwiches and promises that “once a customer has tasted a rockstar sandwich, they are a regular for life.” The team have also recently launched a truly decadent delivery-only mac ‘n’ cheese bar that has mouths watering around the city. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

While this past year has thrown a few curveballs, Daniel says it’s the hardworking team that has made it a success. But, there are two new team members in particular who are helping to spread the DannyBoys love around Brisbane, with John and Mel recently taking on the role of franchisee owners at the new Brendale location. The “passionate, hardworking, dedicated lovers of food” are the “perfect fit” for the DannyBoys family. If you want to join the family – there are plenty more suburbs yearning for a DannyBoys. An inspiring conversation with Danielle McEwan, Creative Director and Founder of Byron Bay home and interiors studio, Tigmi Trading.

TREASURE TROVE

TIGMI TRADING

By JASMINE ROLFE Hi Danielle! Tell us about your journey to open Tigmi Trading. Has owning a business always been a passion of yours? I studied international Business at university, however I don’t think I ever expected to own my own business. At that time, I was more interested in International economics and how the western world could operate in a more equitable and supportive way within the global community. At the same time, I came from a creative family, so we were always exposed to art and design. I guess at the end of the day, Tigmi serves as a marriage of both these two driving influences.

HOME

Can you pinpoint the moment you decided to officially start Tigmi Trading? The seed was planted on a trip to Morocco in 2014, but really, it was when we relocated to our creative home of Byron Bay over 10 years ago that I found the space and creative freedom to pursue the idea and to bring beautiful hand-loomed rugs “EVERY to Australia. PIECE HAS

with artisans and suppliers around the globe so despite the lack of travel, I still feel very connected to them. These days I rely more on my design knowledge and personal instinct when curating a collection. With feet firmly planted on Australian soil I have been able to focus on our own bespoke collections, releasing our first Tigmi designed rug collection RILIEVO and more TIGMI A STORY exciting pieces to come later this year.

TO TELL, AND Your supplier/maker relationships are important WE HOPE THOSE My three all-time favourite pieces that I’ve ever sourced to you. However, three recent sourced creative process, particularly pieces that have given me great when it is tied to such pleasure (i.e. excited heart palpitations!) strong historical and cultural roots. I when I found them were – the original am passionate about preserving these Ekstrom chair, Vintage Magistretti Arm skills and about ensuring the financial Chair, and the Vivai Del Sud tables. survival of the communities. On one of our first trips to Morocco we met with a women’s cooperative with whom we are now working directly with to produce our first Moroccan collection. Unfortunately, the rise of popularity of the Moroccan rug market has really only benefited a select few middlemen whilst the women weavers and their communities are still struggling to make ends meet. This collab will ensure that the money goes directly back to the weavers and their community which will enable them to grow and take more ownership of their economic futures. Sans international travel, how has your buying process changed? I feel blessed that I have already established some wonderful connections

FAST FIVE My top home styling tip would be… don’t be afraid of mixing colour, textures, and eras. The idea of a modern home should not have to be safe, minimised, and sterile. Let your personality reflect in your home.

The biggest lesson I’ve learnt as a business owner is… trust your gut but also have a good understanding of what you are getting into. And a plan to get out!

My fashion sense can be described as… a healthy mix of eclectic prints and considered, timeless pieces.

My favourite Australian fashion label is… so many! Bassike, Zimmerman, and Sarah-Jane Clarke.

Explore a state living on

he sun bakes down on your skin, and a soft breeze rustles the palm trees overhead, the only sound is the therapeutic crashing of the waves and the squeaking of the sand under feet. Just metres away, raindrops from a long-forgotten cloud drip through the canopy, feeding the waterfalls and rivers pulsing through some of the most ancient forests in the world – the Gondwana. You could be on a remote island in Asia, only you’re right here in Australia. There are few places on the planet where you can experience the diversity and magical sensory overload that Queensland has to offer, much of which is just an hour outside of the state’s most accessible cities. As the cooler months come to end, we all begin to daydream about that sunshine feeling, those hourless days 50

spent on sun-soaked shores with nowhere to be. From pristine islands and mist-shrouded mountain ranges just a hop from Brisbane, to kaleidoscopic reefs skirting our idyllic coastlines and quaint country towns a road trip away. Somehow, nothing ever feels too far away or too much trouble in the state permanently set to ‘island time’. Once your winter blues are chased away, the only question remains how you’ll fill the rest of your days. Feed your foodie fantasy with sommelier-curated eats in Noosa, spend a boujee few days in a luxury Gold Coast hotel, or put your phone away and reconnect with nature, in the Daintree.
