EDITOR’S NOTE
Ihave several guilty pleasures...devouring Darrell Lea chocolate liquorice bullets, bingeing history doco’s, tequila, and spending a disproportionate number of hours scrolling luxury fashion sites. But in the name of research, I’m here to report, fashion is going to be fun, fun, fun this party season. Having lived the, ermm, disco era, I’m loving the resurgence of sequins and feathers. I’ve been eyeing off everything Paco Rabanne since visiting their Paris store in July, and I finally succumbed to their iconic disc bag (it’s like bringing my own disco ball to the party!).
Which brings me to our cover, brought to you by Claude & Me Jewellery in Milton. This family-owned business is dear to my heart as we have followed a similar ‘family business’ path and it has been a joy to work with the Downing family.
Our cover depicts the modern glamour aesthetic and sets the tone for this month’s issue as we bring you hot party looks and products, places to get down, and as always, we feature so many talented locals.
I’m grabbing my bag, whacking on heels, and I’ll meet you at the bar (or the d-floor!).
Enjoy!
TRACY SINCLAIR EDITOR @ styletracyis the season to party! What a fun issue to dive into. We have pulled together the ultimate party season checklist – from party outfit ideas, to what to pack in your purse, and how to rock grown-up glitter, plus the season’s hottest trend, Barbiecore, and a guide on how to be the ultimate hostess with the mostest. We hope you find some inspiration!

Tyrone Lowry
Every venue is unique, and that’s thanks to Tyrone Lowry – the founder and director of Lowry Group, who are behind some of Brissy’s most impressive fit-outs.
Whether it’s a restaurant, boutique, or even your local dentist, creating the right ambience is all about the fit-out, and no one knows this better than Tyrone Lowry – the founder and director of Lowry Group.
The Brisbane-based fit-out and commercial construction company is behind the vibe of iconic venues, including Italian Street Kitchen, Gelato Messina, The Green, Newstead Social, Yamas Greek + Drink, and the recently opened Superfly Disco.
“I started Lowry Group with the burning desire for a new challenge and the drive to create my own legacy,” Tyrone says. “I felt I
had more to give in the construction industry and I wanted to take the risk by starting my own business.”
The stakes were extra high for Tyrone, who started Lowry Group in April 2021 (aka peak pandemic period!). But surrounded by trustworthy faces, they rose to the occasion and commenced their first two projects only five days apart.
“I love working alongside clients and designers to deliver their vision, with the reward of enjoying the spaces after we help create them.”
As a husband and father-of-two, for Tyrone, seeing his children’s smiles at the end of the
day makes it all worth it. “We have a reasonably young team with families and I’m trying to create a culture that supports the importance of family time,” he says. “Your people are the key to your success. I work very hard and place emphasis on building an environment where people feel and know they are appreciated.”
The blooming Lowry Group continues to grow from strength to strength, adding Westfield Chermside’s Holey Moley into their eclectic portfolio this month. As for Tyrone’s favourite fit out: “Lowry Group’s new HQ in the heart of Teneriffe – I couldn’t in my wildest dreams have thought our growth would be as rapid as it’s been.”
SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DOWNING
Tucked away on Brisbane’s iconic Park Road, this family-owned and operated business will make all your jewellery dreams come true.
If there’s one family you can trust with your valuable jewellery, it’s the Downing family from Claude & Me Jewellery. The family-owned and operated business, which is celebrating its first birthday this month, has already made a name for itself as a leading boutique jewellery store in Brisbane. This is no doubt all thanks to the family’s passion for building positive relationships with their customers and designing one-of-kind jewellery pieces such as custom, handcrafted diamond engagement rings to captivating ‘just because’ pieces.
It also helps that Claude, who heads up the business with his two children, Corey and Claudia is one of the best jewellery professionals in Brisbane.
Claude was first introduced to the jewellery industry at the young age of 16 working fulltime as a watch and jewellery technician at a leading retailer. As his passion for the industry grew, a curiosity for sales and connecting with customers also began to develop. Before long, he was on the path to a successful sales career, and he’s never looked back since.
Claude is now looking forward to sharing his 25-plus years of experience with his two children, who have already shown a keen interest for the industry.
“I am so passionate and I love what I do. To do it with the people I love is the most special part for me,” he says. “That was kind of what really pushed me into doing what we’ve done. If it wasn’t for the kids saying they were interested in jewellery, I probably
would not have had [started] it.”
Corey, who leads the creative direction for the business – think social media, web design and jewellery design, says, “I have always been a creative at heart for as long as I can remember. So, when dad pitched the idea that he wanted his own jewellery company I was all in.”
Meanwhile, Claudia, who always knew she’d work in fashion, plays a key role in the sales and customer relationships side of the business. She has also been busy with her own namesake collection Claude by Claudia, which is targeted to the younger consumer who is looking for jewellery that’s high-quality but also won’t break the bank. Picture dainty layering necklaces, cute stacking rings, and on-trend huggie earrings.
“I feel like as a family we work well together,” she says, adding, “we are all best friends. We just bounce off each other’s energy.”
On what sets them apart from other boutique jewellers, Claude says, “My philosophy ever since I was young and sales training with a lot of my sales associates, there was never no and it was always yes, and it’s no different with Claude & Me. Anything to do with the jewellery industry, we do it. There’s no job too small.”
The team put integrity at the forefront of everything they do and will go above and beyond to make sure you have the ultimate experience. They are also currently undergoing a sustainability certificate with
Positive Luxury, the luxury industry’s most prestigious certification.
So, whether you’re looking for the perfect engagement ring, need help designing your dream jewellery piece or need some repairs completed (yes, they do watch repairs too!), the team at Claude & Me are here to help you.

HOSTESS WITH THE MOSTEST
Master the art of hosting successful dinner parties and long lunches at home with these expert tips.
By PENELOPE PELECASFace it: hosting an event is no easy feat. There are guest lists, menu choices, event decorations and seemingly hundreds of small details that pop up last minute. The good news is, a well-thought-out plan can make all the difference. So, whether you’re hosting an intimate dinner, or a long lunch, we caught up with three industry experts to find out their top tips.
Layering
From the tablecloth upwards, think about ways to incorporate different colours, textures, and patterns – think textural charger plates or placemats, a mix of dinnerware, colourful napkins and napkin rings, and glassware.
Plan a centrepiece
A beautifully dressed table is essential for ‘setting the scene’, no matter the occasion. Here’s a helpful guide:
Consider the occasion
Is your event indoor or outdoor, is it formal or casual? A formal dinner suits a perfectly set and styled table, while a long lunch may call for large share platters for guests to help themselves and more relaxed table styling.
Decide on a colour palette
Keep your colour palette in mind when choosing tablecloths or runners, dinnerware and deciding on centrepiece styling. Selecting a limited number of colours is a fool-proof way to achieve a ‘pulled-together’ look.
Depending on your event, you can opt for centrepieces that are placed directly in the centre, or centrepieces that span the length of the table. Where your centrepiece extends the length of the table, ensure there are regular and repeating elements for a cohesive appearance and it works within your colour palette. I’d also recommend creating a variety of heights along the table using florals, candles, and other objects (just be sure not to obstruct guest conversation across the table!).
Lighting
Lighting plays an important role when it comes to ambience. Candles can create any mood at an event – romantic, moody, or festive, you name it!
Finishing touches
Think about creating personalised menus or place cards, adding a tiny potted succulent or herb atop each place setting, or having a small take-home treat for each guest. It’s this attention to detail that will make your table setting truly memorable!
Athena Amarandos Owner, Celebrating in Style IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS!
Grace Titmus
Owner, gt studio co TIPS FOR HOSTING AT HOME
• Location, location, location. Think about the lighting and how close, or not so close, you are to the kitchen (I wouldn’t be an event planner if I didn’t consider the floorplan!). With a picture-perfect long lunch, you may want to take a few well-lit snaps to savour the memory, so finding natural lighting is key.
• It’s all in the details. For something simple, add just a few single stem florals in a little white ceramic vase (tulips are my go-to!).
• Bring in a bit of colour. If it’s not in the florals, think about the food you’re
of bright red strawberries? Colours evoke emotion and you want them to complement the aesthetic you’re trying to create.
• Always light a candle. Whether it’s a few white taper candles clustered in the middle of the table, or a sweet cinnamon-scented candle, never underestimate what a bit of candlelight can do to the ambience of a space.
• Bring the vibes! The music you choose will completely change the vibe of your event. It’s time to call on your Scorpio friend with the best playlist – this is their time to shine!
Alex Gregg Executive Chef, AgnesSERVE IT UP RIGHT
Favourite time of the year to host?
Winter and summer – there’s a great comfort in having friends gather during the winter months to share classic braises and hearty meals, you can put a lot of soul into meals like that! Summer is always a winner; you can BBQ pretty much anything and it creates an amazing focal point for everyone.
Favourite way to share meals?
I like for everyone to create their own experience, that’s why I like to have a lot of small side dishes and sauces to really highlight the family style of sharing and talking about a meal.
I like to focus a lot on the cuisine I’m cooking when my partner and I have people over. We have a lot of fun sourcing the right ingredients or trying to match the right wine or cocktail. It becomes a part of the joy.
What’s your go-to dish for a gathering home?
It has to be a roast chicken. From finding the right bird to bringing and taking the care to
roast it perfectly and making an awesome sauce. I think it’s a classic for all year round, plus it goes great with a variety of different salads and veggies from a range of different cuisines.
What’s your go-to pre-meal appetizer? Parfait, pâté, and cured meats, especially jamón, with nice bread and different pickled vegetables.
What’s your advice for someone planning on hosting a dinner party/long lunch at home? You want to be doing as little as possible on the day. A lot of slow cooked dishes, whether meat-heavy or vegetarian, really benefit from a rest overnight. The flavours really marry together, and you can bring them back with relative ease.
Same goes with certain salads to accompany a BBQ in summer. Dressed beans and roasted vegetable salads are great options to have prepared earlier in the day while you focus on enjoying time spent with family and friends.

THE SECRET INGREDIENT
From the sweetness of Jocelyn’s Provisions to a sprinkle of spice from Madame Wu, even Brissy’s culinary icons have their secrets.
By OLIVIA ASHWORTHHanded down for generations, passed amongst the top of the ranks, and guarded by the best of the best, a secret recipe is enough to get people talking or should we say, drooling.
Ready to take the whisk into our own hands, we chatted to the local chefs, bakers, and keepers of all, uncovering the ingredient (and recipe) which makes their culinary concoctions so delicious. Shh, this one’s just for you!
CAROLINE TOH
Pastry chef and baker at Jocelyn’s Provisions
Born and raised in Singapore and Malaysia, Caroline grew up surrounded by food. With a love and interest in western cake and pastries, it’s no surprise she landed in the sweet and delicious mix that is Jocelyn’s Provisions. What’s her secret? It’s all about vanilla! One of the most underrated classic flavours, this crème patisserie recipe is one used at Jocelyn’s, tweaked to perfection to enhance the texture and taste.
Vanilla crème patisserie:
300g milk (split into 240g and 60g portions)
100g heavy (or thickened) cream
1 vanilla pod
75g caster sugar
35g corn flour (sifted)
2 egg yolks
5g custard powder (optional)
Method:
In a medium saucepan, mix 240g of milk, cream, and caster sugar.
Cutting the vanilla pod in half lengthwise, gently scrape out the vanilla seeds with the tip of a small knife and mix the vanilla seeds into the milk mixture. Place the whole scraped pod into the saucepan as well to get maximum flavour and aroma. Give the mixture a quick whisk and put the saucepan on medium heat.
Meanwhile in another mixing bowl, combine the 60g milk and egg yolks. Sift the corn flour and custard powder (if using) into the bowl and whisk the mixture together, breaking up lumps of flour that may be present.
When the milk in the saucepan is heated (not boiling over but you can see steam and small bubbles forming), carefully remove
the vanilla pods, and slowly pour half of the warm milk into the mixing bowl of yolk and flour mixture while continuously whisking to combine the two. When the milk and yolk mixture is well combined, pour all the liquid back into the saucepan and cook on low heat, while gently whisking the mixture for a few more minutes until the custard thickens and starts to gently bubble.
Remove the crème patisserie from heat, transfer into a dish, and place a piece of cling film on the custard (touching the top of custard) to prevent a layer of skin forming on top. Chill overnight to set before use.
Get a taste! The vanilla crème patisserie is used as a base in Jocelyn’s Provisions
Mango Trifle.
DARIO MANCA
Head chef at Rosmarino and executive chef of Etna
With a curiosity for cooking since he was eight, Dario has worked amongst some of the best of the best, brushing shoulders with the likes of Heinz Beck, Antonino Cannavacciuolo, and Gordon Ramsay.
Bringing his passion for contemporary Italian cuisine right here to Brisbane, his secret lies in preserved lemon. Used in almost every pasta and risotto at Rosmarino, he’s put his own signature spin on the ingredient to align with his own taste.
Preserved lemon:
500g sliced lemons
200g fine salt
160g caster sugar
1 tsp bay leaves
1 tsp pepper corns
Method:
1 tsp chilli flakes
1 star anise
1 tsp cardamom pods
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp juniper berries
Mix the spices, salt, and sugar together, in layers to cover all the lemon slices.
Seal in a vacuum bag or jar safely. Keep in a dark spot for three months, before keeping in the fridge.
If you’d like to try it, the preserved lemon is used in Rosmarino’s delicious culurgiones alle castagne.
BRENDON BARKER
Executive chef at Madame Wu and Chu the Phat
From Cairns to Melbourne and everywhere in between, Brendon has worn many hats in his culinary time, with his skills now landing right here in Brisbane, working across both Madame Wu and Chu the Phat.
Created by the mastermind himself, his secret ingredient is the ultimate spicy staple –a delicate, flavoursome, and unique green chilli mayo – it’s the perfect accompaniment to a plate of fresh vegetables.
Green chilli mayo:
4 egg yolks
800ml canola oil
60ml rice wine vinegar
4 cloves garlic
1 tbsp coriander seed
1 tbsp fennel seed
3 large green chili
1 bunch of coriander Salt
Method:
Toast the fennel and coriander seeds in a pan.
Add to a blender with chilli and garlic, put the vinegar on top, then the yolks. Blend until warm.
Slowly add the oil, adding hot water to loosen if it is getting too thick.
Turn the blender up to high and add the coriander, blend until the mayo goes bright green and season.
So, you think you can dance? Whether you’re a seasoned performer or tend to lack talent when it comes to the world of bop, it’s no secret that almost everyone has experienced the urge to get up and bust a move. And there’s only one way to overcome the itch – dance the night away! After all, dancing at a club is one of the most exhilarating feelings in the world; the music is loud, the lights are low, and it’s enough to make you want to lose yourself. So, without further ado, we give you Brisbane’s best clubs where you can get your boogie on, do the robot, or crump it out all night long.
Retros
As the name suggests, Retros is a club that is well… retro! Enter a bygone era from a Tarantino movie, but instead of a milkshake opt for one of their signature sips (it’s a cocktail lounge after all!) Hey Chica is the closest you’ll get to Cuba without leaving Fortitude Valley – think gourmet Latin-inspired street food, mouth-watering cocktails, and an impeccable dance floor of course! You can even cure your hump day blues with a Salsa session held every Wednesday night.
Su Casa
R&B lovers rejoice because Su Casa is the spot for you! It’s time to make a beeline for the dancefloor and get down to some of the best tunes out. Be sure to book a VIP booth and opt-in for the bottle service if you want to keep the good times rolling.
The Beat
Can you feel the beat? Attendees at The Beat certainly can, with Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue on repeat! This is one of Brisbane’s most renowned spots to bust a move – drag queens, disco balls, and more… name a more iconic spot to get your groove on.
YOT Club
Superfly Disco
You’ll want to make a date with Brisbane’s newest club, Superfly Disco, for three good reasons: one, disco classics all night long, two, an authentic Rolls-Royce turned DJ booth and three, there’s a light-up dance floor. Need we say more?
Ahoy! YOT Club takes clubbing up a notch. You’ll find two bars, a stage, and a dancefloor aboard this nearly 40-metre-long, double-decker vessel. Expect shots of bright blue Alizé liqueur and unforgettable dancing, making for a night to remember. P.S. we heard there are plans for a new 100ft super yacht later this year.
Suzie Wongs Good Time Bar
Blink-and-you’ll-miss-it… not really though because the entryway to Suzie Wongs is through a fridge door perched on Ann Street. Before stepping through the fridge prepare to be transported into a Hawaiian-inspired boozer with live music, cocktails, and dancing aplenty. Once inside, jam out to rock n roll, country, western, blues, and funk tunes until the sun rises (and then head back when it sets)
Mr Mista
Make ‘dine then dance’ your new motto at Mr Mista where you can fuel up on Southeast Asian eats before hitting the dancefloor because if one thing is better than dancing, it’s bao buns! Then when the clock strikes 10pm and the DJ arrives, head to the dancefloor with a drink in hand. They say the party don’t start until the DJ walks in, and Mr Mista is no exception to the rule.
Luckily, when the sun goes down Brisbane is far from sleepy – come nightfall and the streets are alive with sounds of muffled tunes, laughter, and flashes of distant strobe lights. Dancing the night away is right on our doorstep, so let’s get grooving!

ON THE RECORD
A new type of beat, give a warm welcome to Brisbane’s only vinyl record press, Suitcase Records.
By OLIVIA ASHWORTHWhen it comes to pressing play on party season, there’s a new beat on the block. With a passion and love for local music, owners of Brisbane’s newest and only vinyl record press, Suitcase Records, Kath and Neil are taking us back to the good ol’ age of vinyls, making us question why we ever left.
With their first pressings kicking off in August this year, the journey of Suitcase Records hasn’t been a quick or easy one. From a throw away comment on a Sunday morning to months of research, financial risks, and international training, Neil and Kath waved goodbye to their jobs in construction and project management to pursue what some would call the ultimate muso dream.
“Neil’s eyes were lighting up in a way I hadn’t seen for years, and we decided to go for it,” Kath says.
Beating standard industry timelines by a mile, Suitcase Records’ record pressing process is truly a labour of love. After being contacted by an artist or a label, the team sends the supplied audio files to a lacquer cutter in the US who cuts grooves into the surface of a lacquer to imprint the digital files on a master disk. A stamper is then created using a process of electroplating, all before bringing things straight back to the factory in Pinkenba where it’s then used to press the records.
“The best part hands down, has been
working with Australian artists to get their music onto vinyl, which in turns allows them to keep working,” Kath says.
Still settling into the groove, Kath and Neil are determined to keep perfecting their craft, collaborating with local artists to keep producing a true tune of magic.
“I think vinyl is a beautiful, tactile, and physical way of listening to music and people are craving it. From the crackle as you put the needle down to the ability to hold the album in your hand and enjoy the cover art while you are listening, it feeds the soul in a way that streaming just doesn’t,” Kath says.
Drop a beat with Kath
You’re hosting a party, what’s your goto album?
You cannot beat Dolly Parton.
Favourite music genre?
I love country music. There, I said it.
Favourite Brisbane artist?
That is so hard to answer! Girl and Girl were our first pressing and are spectacular. We’ve also just pressed Ethan Enoch’s vinyl which we have had on repeat on the factory floor because we all love it so much.
Best business advice you’ve ever received?
The worst decision is no decision. Just decide and move on. Keep moving and learning.

The festive season may be fun, but it’s a marathon, not a sprint and every leg counts. So, whether we’re dining, dancing ‘til dawn, or sipping a spritz at our favourite spot, these are a few non-negotiables we stow away to keep us polished and party poised.
side-effect of this season’s sartorial obsession with teeny, tiny bags? Sample and travel-size items are essential. Where possible, aim for multi-taskers like Gisou’s Hair Oil (mini of course) which not only tames unruly locks, but also works as a body-oil and illuminator, Ere Perez’s Beetroot Cheek & Lip Tint for rosy everything, Macabalm for dry lip, skin, and nail emergencies, and Hourglass’s Ambient Lighting Powder for easy touch-ups to eyes, cheeks, and collarbones. Gorgeous!
GET YOUR PARTY PREP ON!
Check the calendar and brace yourself, the party season is officially underway! This means it’s time to book your essential beauty maintenance. Consider this your one-stop guide to a high glow routine to have you fully prepped for the good times ahead.
Do you have loose skin? Stubborn areas of fat? Say hello to your new best friend: NuEra, the very latest in non-invasive skin tightening. And The Formulated in Taringa is the only clinic in the whole of Queensland that can give you access to it.
So, what exactly is NuEra, you ask? A skin tightening machine offering a personalised, non-invasive, radio frequency body sculpting treatment; a device that will have you kicking unwanted wrinkles and cellulite out the door. It uses radio frequency energy to heat and contract dermal collagen, in turn improving skin laxity on the face, neck, and skin. It’s also a safer and more effective way to tighten skin as compared to
Ultherapy (a non-surgical alternative to a facelift) or HIFU (a high intensity focused ultrasound facial), because it is less likely to cause bruising, swelling, and pain.
The clinic, which has over 30 years of collective experience, was founded by Dr Davin Lim, one of the world’s leading experts for laser-treated skin disorders and rejuvenation therapies that include tattoo removal, acne scar revision, and laser resurfacing, so you can be rest assured you’re in good hands.
So, if you want to get in shape ahead of party season, a visit to The Formulated will not disappoint.

Beauty Boost Aesthetic Clinic
If the end-of-year has you feeling a little more exhausted than usual, a trip to Beauty Boost Aesthetic Clinic will not disappoint. The modern aesthetic clinic, led by registered nurse and advanced cosmetic injector Samara Searle, is passionate about enhancing your natural features. Beauty Boost provides advanced injectable treatments to improve fine lines, restore volume loss, and enhance beauty features.
A popular end-of-year service is the tear trough treatment (under eye filler), which is an effective way to treat dark circles and hollowing. The treatment is minimally invasive and includes
1-2mls of dermal fillers into the hollowing using a needle. The results are astonishing.
If you’re after a more natural approach, Beauty Boost also provides skin remodelling injections – these treatments are less invasive and can provide your skin with a natural glow making you feel hydrated and refreshed.
The clinic also prides itself on taking the time to get to know each client’s needs. Everyone’s face is assessed, and treatment is tailored accordingly.
What are you waiting for? Head into party season feeling refreshed!

It’s party season! And while there’s plenty to think about – like what you are going to wear, heels or no heels – your wardrobe choices may be determined by your venous health.
As the warm weather rolls in, do you tend to drop your hemline to cover spider veins? Or book a spray tan? Let’s face it, even sheer tights were not made for Brisbane summer!
It may be too late for this year, but you can still act. Be proactive and book in for a consultation, which includes a medical examination and ultrasound investigation. Keep in mind, most patients require multiple procedural sessions over a few months to achieve optimal results.
During your initial consultation,
you’ll be given a treatment plan that is valid for 12 months. The practice also offers complimentary reviews for a year to ensure successful treatment. And you’ll be seen by only the best, aka Dr Nicholas Kemp, who heads up the Auchenflower-based practice. So, you can be rest assured you’ll be taken care of from start to finish.
Booking in advance also offers you the freedom to choose treatment days or after-hours appointments so that you can best accommodate work and family commitments.
The best part is all their treatments are walk in/walk out so you can dance your way off to the next function!

SCINJECTABLES
Iyears of injecting experience, has introduced a new treatment that aims to reduce and prevent the ageing process of the skin (due to TGA regulations, we cannot name the product).
As we age, the natural hyaluronic acid in our skin depletes, and as a result our skin loses its natural elasticity. This is where bio-remodelling comes in. Bio-remodelling injections are made with a high concentration of hyaluronic acid and are designed to stimulate collagen and elasticity, which in turn improves skin quality (elasticity and firmness), hydration, and helps prevent early signs of ageing. All treatments come with a complimentary Profhilo Haenkenium antioxidant moisturiser to ensure the best results.
“The treatment is ideal for rejuvenating skin on the face, neck and decolletage, as well as the back of hands,” Su-en says. “It is the first of its kind in Australia.”
That’s right, bio-remodelling injections are the latest antiageing treatment to sweep the Australian beauty industry –this treatment has been available since 2015 in other parts of the world, including Europe, the UK, and Russia, but was only recently introduced in Australia.
And if you’re reading this and thinking how it differentiates from facial fillers, bio-remodelling injections do not add facial volume. “The consistency of the product is more like ‘runny honey’ so that once injected into the face the product will spread to a 4cm diameter and hydrate the treated area,” Su-en explains, adding: “It has no volumising or filling effect, it delivers more of a hydration effect to the entire treated area.”
“While some people have reported to see improvements after the first treatment, it is ideal to have two treatments one month apart and the best results are generally seen one month after the second treatment.”
If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, feel free to book in for a complimentary consultation with Su-en – fine lines, no more!
and smoother skin please!
CORPORATE PSYCHOLOGY with Dr John Barletta
Grow a mo, save a bro
Historically, most men have had poor help-seeking behaviours; not going to a GP or ignoring mental wellness and relationships. Movember turns that around with guys growing facial hair to facilitate conversations to stay well. Having prostate and testicular checks, talking about mental health, and getting in physical shape can be the new better. Knowledge is power, prevention is critical, and early detection is essential. To be a quality ‘mo bro’, consider these steps for yourself and mates:
• Have a check-up with your GP
• Monitor your weight and waistline
• Know your family health history
• Nurture your relationships
• Maintain a balanced, healthy diet
• Move regularly and wear sunscreen
• Chillax, manage stress, connect with nature
• Minimise alcohol and don’t smoke
• Sleep well and meditate often
• Stay connected to quality friends
• Discuss your difficulties and emotions
• Ensure you smile and laugh often!

With Melbourne Cup done and dusted, the party season is upon us. It’s time to plan some outfits and dust off those ‘Choo’s’.
However, you may want to think twice before opting for high heels. Researchers recently compared the venous blood pressure in the legs of women walking on a treadmill with and without high heels.
For a quick recap, when you are walking and moving during the day, the calf muscles act like a pump and contract allowing the blood to flow proximally towards the heart. When the foot is off the floor, the foot veins fill with blood. As the heel and arch of the foot contact the floor, the blood flows into the relaxed calf veins. The calf muscles then contract which propels blood up the deep veins.
High heels change this natural walking motion, shifting the weight to the forefoot, causing the calf muscles to remain contracted.
This loss of efficiency causes pooling of venous blood in the leg. Hence some people suffering with swelling and heaviness or even restless leg symptoms at night.
If you have a predisposition for varicose veins, then wearing heels may aggravate the symptoms. You don’t have to stop wearing heels, but you should try to stretch your calf muscles by walking or dancing throughout the day and mix up your footwear from time to time.

Are you limiting growth?
“I am a bad learner.” This was a belief I lived by for many years. This belief was formed at an early age in my life and was based on one event and several emotions tied to that event.
We all experience limiting beliefs and it is important to uncover and resolve them as they can severely impact growth. A great coach will work with the client to understand their belief is not a thing, it is a “truth” that has become seemingly frozen in time. It is a decision made around an event, often when young and lacking experience. When working with a limiting belief, firstly discover when the decision was made to form that belief. Then understand the meaning behind why the mind created that belief. Step out and look down on the event and ask what a mentor, teacher or even a judge would believe. How would they interpret the event? Could someone else experiencing the same situation create a totally different belief? Remember you created the limiting belief so you can create a new belief, one that serves you well.
FINE JEWELS with Troy McKenzie
Summer jewels
When I think of summer, days at the beach, relaxing around the pool, parties, festive celebrations, and fun immediately pop into my head.
But I also immediately think of beautiful pearls in all shapes and sizes, and coral and coloured gems – think aquamarine, topaz, peridot, amethyst, citrine and turquoise.
Quintessential jewellers David Webb and Bulgari have both embraced the mix of colour with fun and whimsical styles into many of their collections.
Whether it be the iconic David Webb Zebra Bracelet, multi-coloured Bombe Ring, or the colourful Allegra collection from Bulgari, they’re sure to be a talking point and most certainly a feelgood piece to add to any collection.
And I can’t forget Tiffany & Co. Their Schlumberger Paillonne Bangle bracelets are available in an array of colours and textures. They can be worn as a standalone piece or as a stack in various colours and are much loved and sought after by many, including the ever stylish Jackie Kennedy.
Pearls of any length, whether it be a shorter classic strand, a longer flowing strand or a layered look mixed with gold and colourful gemstones, are sure to add that extra little bit of pizazz and fun and are suitable for just about any occasion.

It’s espresso martini season!
With party season around the corner, it’s time to sharpen up your cocktailmaking skills and whip out your favourite martini glasses. Want to spice up your next dinner party experience? Enter everyone’s favourite, the classic espresso martini. Who would have thought vodka and coffee go so well together?
To get started, simply grab your favourite caffeine or zero caffeine coffee beans (go double shot for an added oomph or for a convenient alternative, you could use Wolff Cold Brew Concentrate), your favourite premium vodka, and Kahlua, and you’re good to go! All that’s left to do now is to write up your guest list and plan your menu – a cheeseboard would pair perfectly. Party season couldn’t come fast enough.
The small details matter
Selling your house? There are so many things to consider before selling your home, and one of those things, is that even the smallest of details matter.
For example, buyers will notice raised toilet lids, dirty showers or bathtubs, muddy carpets, or rugs. Investing in a fresh coat of paint and new fixtures like some new sofa cushions or bedroom linen can make a huge difference when selling your home.
Selling your home can be an emotional process, however taking the time to know what to invest in before you start will ensure the process is as seamless as possible.
Our team have been doing this for over a decade, so let us help you.

Stand out from the crowd
End-of-year invitations are coming in thick and fast. As your social calendar starts to fill up with cocktail parties, it’s time to update your partywear and use the opportunity to showcase your style.
This year we no longer have to put together an outfit while worried that the event may be cancelled, or it will never see the light of day – so we’re going all out!
Brooches and crystalised lapel pins are having their moment, as are embellishing the classics, think jackets in metallic textiles and sequinned accessories.
An unstructured blazer in a bold colour is always a party essential. It carries the recognised hallmarks of formal dressing but allows you to stay cool. For the ladies, a chic short suit with heels is a professional take on the Christmas party look.
For men, a new bespoke party shirt turns heads and is sure to drive the conversation. We recommend sticking to linen or cotton as you soak up the sun and sparkling – and toast to 2022!
Remember there is a fine line between stylish and gaudy, walk on the right side.

PIMP YOUR PAD
Get to know one half of local furniture brand, Oh Paddi as we chat to Bri Conway about her Pinterest-worthy tables we’re adding to our abodes.
By BETHAN WARRIORHi Bri! First and foremost, can you introduce yourself and your brand?
My name is Bri and my partners name is Josh, together we started a furniture business that we named Oh Paddi.
Tell us the origin story of Oh Paddi – where does the name come from?
I was in the fashion industry and Josh was in finance and we would regularly speak about how we didn’t enjoy what we did.
One day we sat down and both agreed we’d had enough so after a couple of weeks we left! With all the newly discovered time we had, we decided to start a bit of a side hustle finding antique furniture pieces and giving them a new life. This is really what gave us the confidence to create our own stuff.
The first piece we created was our kidney shaped coffee table, an inspiration from a beautiful 80-year-old kidney dresser we found. We popped this up on social media to see if there was a taste for our type of furniture, and we were absolutely blown away with the positive response.
After making more and more pieces, we finally decided it was time to create this into something we do full time, and Oh Paddi was born. Our name ‘Paddi’ comes from where we live – Paddington, and the synonym for home ‘pad’.
How would you describe your design aesthetic for Oh Paddi?
The guidelines we loosely follow as designers is funky and unusual combined with a bit of that old fashion 60s look. We absolutely love how everything was made with character back in that era. Every single one of our creations must carry the “approachable” aesthetic – if you’re afraid of putting a wine glass on it, we’ve messed up.
Where do you get inspiration from for your pieces?
Lately we love taking natural objects like clouds and pears and using them as inspirations for our pieces. This honestly brings so much freedom for us and for our customers when designing anything we feel like doing in the moment.
What’s your favourite way to style an Oh Paddi table?
It can change so much depending on what aesthetic I’m trying to create, which is also dependent on what piece I’m styling and what colour it was finished in.
We support a lot of Australian handmade artists from glass blowers and candle makers to stone carvers and more. So, when we’re styling a piece, we try to incorporate a couple pieces each time to show our love for handmade stuff.

BEEP BEEP! GREEN UP YOUR DAILY COMMUTE
Dynamic duo Joe D’Ercole and Ben Silver are on a mission to deliver high-quality Vespa-style electric scooters that benefit the environment without hurting your wallet.
By PENELOPE PELECASNo one does sustainability better than Kelvin Grove start-up Benzina Zero. Benzina Zero, which means ‘zero fuel’ in Italian, is shaking up the global transport industry with its new Europeanstyle electric scooters, which officially launched to the public on 15 September this year.
Business partners and scooter enthusiasts Joe D’Ercole and Ben Silver, who have 40 years of combined scooter selling experience, are passionate about creating more eco-friendly ways for commuters and delivery drivers to get around and have spent the past five years finetuning their designs.
“We’ve always been very passionate about scooters in general because they’re practical, they’re fun, [and] they aren’t overly expensive for a lot of people to afford,” Ben says.
Joe, whose old company put about 18,000 scooters on the road in South East Queensland, adds: “We kept talking about doing a project to continue to get people moving around economically.”
The scooters in question, which are also available internationally, come in four models,
the City, the Sport, the Duo, and the Duo+. The slick City model can go up to 80km on a single charge and has a top speed of 45km/h, while the Sport can go up to 90km on a single charge and up to speeds of 75km/h.
The ultra-versatile Duo range can reach speeds up to 65km/h with a range of up to 105km and have more than 20 different attachments that can be easily fitted to carry all sorts of goods, from a surfboard to groceries.
Each Benzina Zero scooter costs less than $1 to travel 100km. You think that’s
cool? Well, Joe and Ben are also pledging that for every scooter sold they’ll regenerate one square metre of Australian land to build a Benzina Zero forest.
“We got frustrated because a lot of people say [things] like our vehicles have travelled this far and have saved this much CO², which is equivalent to planting this many trees,” Ben says. “In fact, it’s not equivalent to that at all. We thought, we want to make a meaningful difference here. We already have zero emission devices; how can we contribute more.”
