The House of Wellness 11 IthereBarely t began as a fashion trend, but minimalism is now being embraced by the beauty community. Not only does cutting back on products help bank balances, it can also make your beauty routine more efficient and effective. It also means waving goodbye to skincare ingredients competing with one another, hair products weighing down your mane and excessive make-up contributing to cakeyness. We break down the best advice for simplifying your beauty routine. Does “less is more” ring true when it comes to beauty looks? Our experts share their thoughts on the rising popularity of simplified make-up, skincare and hair routines WORDS CHARLOTTE BRUNDRETT

“Vitamin A is a great ingredient because it helps to stimulate collagen and cell turnover in the skin, but using it too much, too soon can cause irritation and skin irritation is actually one of the leading causes of ageing. Instead, I’d suggest slowly introducing active ingredients.”

— JAMES VIVIAN SKIN Skincare education has improved greatly in recent years, with everyday consumers now familiar with powerful active ingredients such as niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. But the problem is there can be too much of a good thing, especially when it comes to what you’re putting on your skin.

“The approach to colouring services has considerablychangedoverthe past five years,” Michael says. “These days the average time between colouring appointments is roughly 10-12 weeks compared to the traditional timeframe of six to eight weeks.” This is largely due to clients requesting softer highlights, natural-looking balayage and root shadows so regrowth isn’t as noticeable, all of which help to extend the longevity of colour between“What’sappointments.happeninginhair nowadays is a massive shift (compared) to what was popular in the 1990s and 2000s. Back then, clients were asking for heavily compacted highlights, which required far greater upkeep,” Michael says. “Glosses are a great refresher between appointments, and that’s what I gravitate to for my clients. Less regular colouring is going to benefit the health and condition of hair, and you’re saving time and money in the process.”

“When it comes to building a skincare routine, get your basics right first, which is to cleanse, moisturise and use sun protection.”

HAIR Australians have shifted towards low-maintenance hair care and colouring services, according to hair education specialist and colourist Michael Kelly.

“A lot of people think that to get into skincare you have to have every single serum and every step covered, but that’s not actually doing anyone any favours,” dermal therapist James Vivian“Introducingsays. a bunch of active ingredients at once isn’t a good idea. Not only can this cause hypersensitivity, if your skin becomes irritated then it’s hard to determine what exact ingredient is at fault because you’ve introduced multiple products at Jamesonce.” recommends starting with the basics and working your way up, prioritising one skin concern at a time.

“There’s still no firm proof what that can do to your body, but there’s concern about chemicals being absorbed,” William says. He recommends choosing a mineral or physical sunscreen if you have sensitive skin. “Remember though, just because it’s ‘natural’ doesn’t mean you won’t get a reaction.” Slip, slop, slap About 85 per cent of people do not put on enough sunscreen; use one teaspoon for the face and for each limb. A mineral-based product is thicker as it contains zinc oxide, so you won’t need as much. Apply 20 minutes before you go out in the sun. Always reapply after swimming, even if the product is water-resistant.

Smart skincare “Two SPF15 sunscreens may achieve a slightly higher coverage due to added filters and layers but it will likely be a small amount,” Rachel says.

Step 1 Light serums Step 2 Sunscreen Step 3 Moisturiser Step 4 Make-up, including lip protection or lipstick with sun protection.

“A mineral or physical sunscreen means the chemical filter — which provides a barrier and reflects the damage of UV rays from your skin — is zinc-based,” WilliamResearchsays.is ongoing, but studies in the US indicate key chemical filters found in chemical sunscreens are absorbed and are present in the body 10 days later. It is also believed they damage coral reefs and cause other environmental problems.

“Each SPF15 sunscreen has the maximum capacity to protect the skin for 15 times longer compared to no sunscreen, so adding the two would still only have that maximum capacity of protection.”

New year, new SPF It is important to check the use-by date as “the level of protection your sunscreen gives you degrades as it gets older”, William says. Ideally, buy a new tube of SPF50 sunscreen at the start of every summer, he advises. Make-up with SPF also has a shelf life no longer than a year.

As for the best SPF level, William says: “At the very least a SPF30, but SPF50 is best in the Australian sun.”

Sunscreen smarts Sunscreen products are now being labelled as mineral, physical or chemical.

Face facts “Lip and eye products often have additional sun safety factors,” L’Oreal scientific communications manager Rachel McAdam says. “A product that ‘ophthalmologicallyis tested’ usually means it is suitable for the eye area. And lip products are often formulated with some staying power as well as additional considerations for a level of consumption,” she says. “Choose sunscreen products that call out ‘suitability’ for the eye or lip areas.”

The sun safe message is taking its time to sink in with Cancer Council statistics showing one in six adults (and one in four adolescents) were sunburnt at least once last summer. Sunscreen not only helps prevent skin cancer, choosing one that works and reacts well for your skin can also protect your skin from ageing, according to skincare expert William Cook. From moisturiser and foundation to cosmetics, choosing the right sunscreen for your skin type includes the products you use on your face

Layer upon layer “Sunscreens work best when they are able to integrate within the very top layer of skin, so they can create a uniform layer, therefore minimising areas exposed to UV,” Rachel says.

Sun, scent and skincare products may affect the delicate skin of the decolletage, so it pays to protect this often neglected area

PLUNGETAKETHE

WORDS SARAH MARINOS Most women devote time and money to taking care of their face and body with products designed to keep skin supple, youthful and blemish-free. But one area of the body is often overlooked — the decolletage area that runs from the neck and across the collarbone down to the top of the Dermatologistbreasts. and cosmetic and laser specialist Dr Belinda Welsh shares the following decolletage advice.

Skin on our hands can also show signs of ageing. It loses fat and elasticity, which can lead to thinning skin prone to wrinkles and age spots. Like the skin on the decolletage and other parts of the body, hands need some care to slow the ageing processdamage.and USE SUNSCREEN

A simple moisturiser is fine, but avoid applying higherstrength product containing alpha-hydroxy acids or retinols just before bedtime as it can collect in folds in the neck and causeSmoothirritation.skin with gentle scrubs or exfoliants. Look for products containing alpha-hydroxy or beta-hydroxy acids, while creams containing 10-20 per cent urea or ammonium lactate have a smoothing effect.

Gently remove dead and tough skin from the back of hands, palms and fingers. MOISTURISE Keep hand cream in the car, on your desk or in the bathroom so you can moisturise regularly.

PROTECT Wear rubber gloves for protection against the harsh chemicals in cleaning products, and use mild soap for handwashing.

When you are driving and have your hands on the wheel, skin is particularly exposed to the UV rays coming through the windscreen. EXFOLIATE

Always use sunscreen When applying sunscreen, we often forget to cover our ears, neck and chest. Over time, repeated sun exposure leads to damaged skin.

WE LIKE Cancer Council SPF50+ Ultra Sunscreen 1 litre, $29.99; Cancer Council SPF50+ Active Pump 200ml, $17.49 Avoid spraying scent on skin Poikiloderma of Civatte — the medical name may sound unusual but the skin condition, which usually affects the neck and decolletage, is actually quite common.

“Perfumes contain fragrance molecules and preservatives that can interact with the sun. This converts the molecules into chemicals that can irritate and damage skin, and cause broken capillaries, brown pigmentation and thinning of the skin,” Dr Welsh says.

YOURFORGETDON’THANDS

“This kind of damage often appears on the sides of the neck and chest where women spray perfume. Instead of spraying your skin, put perfume on your clothes.”

“Be wary of little red spots on the chest that bleed sometimes and don’t heal. If you notice any skin changes, get them checked,” Dr Welsh says. Apply sunscreen frequently to all areas of your body, including your neck and chest, even during cooler months.

Alternatively, try dusting your decolletage with bronzing powder instead of using scent.

“Test cream on a small area first and don’t use it just before bedtime to avoid irritation,” Dr Welsh advises. WE LIKE CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream 177ml, $17.99; Lanate Face & Body Cream 150g, $26.49 Eat a healthy diet This tip isn’t just for your decolletage — it is good advice for healthy skin and a healthy body. “Your skin reflects your general health. Eat foods that are high in antioxidants and low in sugar, and avoid too much alcohol or smoking,” she Antioxidant-richsays.foods include almonds, broccoli, kale, sweet potato, avocado, blueberries and grapes. Eating five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit daily will boost your antioxidant intake. The House of Wellness 17

Women are more prone than men, it becomes more noticeable with age and is caused by perfume and the sun.

“This can particularly be an issue for women who might wear lower-cut shirts and T-shirts. If their chest is exposed day after day without sunscreen, the damage accumulates,” Dr Welsh says.

There is a risk of skin cancer in more serious cases, and sun damage can also cause blotchiness or brown spots that may be treated with prescription creams or laser.

Skin on the decolletage is thinner and has fewer hair follicles and oil glands so it is delicate, prone to scarring and takes longer to repair. Much like the rest of the body, age also causes wrinkling of the “Mostarea.people don’t have overly dry skin in this area but you can moisturise to keep the skin barrier in top shape,” Dr Welsh says.

2TikTok and E-girl make-up has helped popularise bright cheeks and the use of blush products once more. The result is a youthful, flushed appearance, injecting a bit more life and colour into everyday make-up.

1GLOSS

It might sound counter-intuitive, but bright make-up works best when paired with a more subtle lip, such as a nude gloss. This trend plays down the pigment of your lips without turning them colourless thanks to the reflective sheen of the gloss formula. You can give added dimension to the look by using a medium to dark brown lip liner to line your lips, before applying nude lipstick and a clear gloss.  WE LIKE L’Oreal Infallible Lip Liner 213 Stripped Brown, $10; Nude by Nature Moisture Shine Lipstick 02 Nude, $19.49; and Rimmel Oh My Gloss, $11.49 It’s all about loud, bright colours this spring and one of the easiest ways to embrace the trend is through vibrant make-up looks. We break down some of the ways you can recreate the trend at home, from a statement neon eye and bright blush to reflective lips.

style notes COLOUR

From a simple cat eye to a cut-crease or geometric design, everything looks a little more dramatic when bright, neon eyeliners are involved. For extreme pigment pay-off, start your eye look with a white eyeliner, which will serve as the base. Create your design as desired and then trace over it with your chosen neon shade, with the finished product far more bright and striking as a result. Complete the look by applying your favourite mascara and a white or nude eyeliner on your lower waterline for added brightness.

From simple rosy cheeks to a sun-kissed look along the mid-face perimeter and nose bridge, there are a few ways you can approach blush application. If you want a lifted appearance, apply your blush with a softer hand and at the top of the cheekbone, working it upwards and outwards instead of on the apples of the cheek.

Jessica has never been afraid to speak up for herself and others. It is something she learned as the second youngest of five sisters.

Growing up, Jessica, 31, didn’t see many people of colour on commercial TV and turned instead to documentaries on the ABC or SBS to find people and stories with whom she identified.

A lot has changed since then, but — as shown in Channel 9’s much maligned coronavirus vaccination ad — there is still a long way to go to ensure more diversity on our screens.

“It’s really about having that access and opportunity, leaving the door open for someone else and giving them that chance,” she says.

“I think we’re awake, we’re trying to get there.”

Now settling into a new gig as a coach on The Voice Australia Jessica wants to be more of a collaborative mentor than someone sitting in judgment. She says she will prepare artists for life in the spotlight by encouraging them to ignore the critics and believe in themselves. She endorses a similar message to that of the L’Oreal Paris Woman of Worth campaign. Already a long-time fan of L’Oreal Paris, Jessica leapt at the chance to endorse not only their products but their campaign of female empowerment.

Jessica has stared down plenty of her own bullies since that experience. Most notably, she defended AFL star Adam Goodes during the booing saga in 2015 that eventually forced his early retirement from the game. And, as a contestant on Australian Idol, stood firm as her body was publicly scrutinised by judge Kyle Sandilands. “It definitely hurt but my reaction to that was to laugh it off because I knew I was beautiful, and I knew I was young and I knew I’m growing,” she“Mostsays.young 15 and 16-yearolds aren’t that strong. “I was hit by a bully for the first time who called me a ‘black b---h!’,” she recalls.

One moment from her first year of high school left a particularly lasting impression.

“So, I just stepped back and let my sister do all the talking. She was in her last year at high school at the time and she stood up and said to the boy: ‘How dare you! You don’t even know what that means’. And there was this brightness, this kind of light that shone out of her as she spoke. It was like she got bigger. Even her body language got bigger.”

“For me, self-worth is finding something that gives you a sense of belonging and purpose, it changes with experience and is something we are constantly navigating.”

“About 45 years ago, my parents planted coconut trees in the back yard to bring back the sense of my dad’s village where you’re surrounded by love and the luscious green of Indonesia,” she explains.

“Working with L’Oreal Paris is a dream come true having grown up seeing my mum using their products and, as a kid, experimenting with her products. “To be collaborating and an ambassador for L’Oreal Paris, with all the work that they do and all they stand for, is a huge highlight of my career.” And there have certainly been many highlights in Jessica’s career. From performing for Barack Obama to collaborating with internationally renowned artists such as Snoop Dogg and Flo Rida. In protest, feminist activist Merle Thornton — mother of Sigrid, who would grow up to be one of our best-loved actresses — chained herself to the foot rail of the public bar at Brisbane’s Regatta Hotel. This marvellously defiant act, in 1965 with friend Rosalie Bogner, cast a spotlight on the lack of women’s rights when it came to drinking in pubs. But another ruling at the time was just as shocking: women were forced to resign from jobs in the public service and some companies when they married. Are you thinking that was decades ago, and we’re doing so well with women’s rights now? In the public sector, they now occupy 48.6 per cent of senior leadership roles and outnumber men in middle-management roles (52.2 per cent). And 37 per cent of Commonwealth justices and judges are now women. Mary Crooks is the executive director of the Victorian Women’s Trust, an Australian feminist organisation. In Destination Equality, an essay in Fragility and Hope in a World of Uncertainty, published by Future Leaders, she writes while there have been impressive achievements in women’s rights over time, “there remain significant barriers to achieving gender equality”. According to Mary those barriers are a political system in which women are in the minority; a workforce that advantages men, who have fewer domestic responsibilities; and “powerful, deep-seated sexist beliefs that deem women subordinate, as well as objectifying them”. When Natasha was 26, she became the youngest woman to sit in our federal parliament, “... we once led the world in so many areas of women’s rights and yet we have not maintained that pace of change ...” — Natasha Stott Despoja women are about five times more likely to be victims of sexual assault than men. I love to listen to the waves nearby, go for a run or meditate to kick-start my day. I then always add the Wanderlust Collagen Booster and Wanderlust Prebiotic Gut Goodness powders to my morning breakfast smoothie. I find if I start my day right ... I always feel my best. From as far back as I can remember, becoming a model was a huge dream of mine and I knew that with hard work, dedication and self-belief, I could make it my reality. As a child I had an obsession with collecting Vogue magazines and scrapbooking my favourite models and fashion trends. I started modelling classes for fun when I was six and instantly fell in love with it. I am beyond grateful and feel so lucky that everything has happened so quickly with the help and support of my family, friends and wonderful mother. I am very goal oriented and this is only the beginning.

When did MND become a reality?

battleBeastofa WHY HE IS PLAYING ON IN HIS FIGHT TO HELP FIND A CURE FOR MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE

52 The House of Wellness

FOOTY GREAT NEALE DANIHER REVEALS

I was diagnosed with MND in mid-2013 but I started to notice something wasn’t right in late 2012. I started to have issues with my right hand. I’d lost a bit of grip strength and I was fumbling with simple tasks — like putting the car key in the ignition. Family and friends had also noticed a soft slur in my speech and I began to trip over words when I spoke. It wasn’t until I sought out the medical staff at the West Coast Eagles (where I was general manager of football operations at the time), that the tests began and after months, ultimately ended with a diagnosis of MND. What has MND taught you? Being diagnosed with MND has taught me how important your attitude is when dealing with adversity. No matter what happens, it’s up to you to do something about it. MND is a beast. There is no effective treatment or cure but I never believed that there was nothing I could do. When I was first diagnosed, I had a choice. The negative thoughts began to nag away at me, ‘this is the dismal reality’, ‘you can’t sugar coat this one’, ‘you’re a goner’. But as I started to think of (my wife) Jan and the kids, I made an overwhelming resolution that a victim attitude was only going to make things worse for my family, my mates and infinitely worse for me. MND has taught me that we are all hardwired to find a way to not only survive but to thrive. I found resilience — a way to ‘Play On’ and fight back. I also knew I couldn’t fight this alone — life is a team game after all. What is your advice to those facing similar challenges? When life throws you something like MND, it’s often not clear what to do. It is confronting and hard. You can feel like there are no options. But you must summon the courage to wrestle back control and not allow yourself to be a victim. Battling The Beast is exhausting, disheartening and a constant challenge. But when life gets difficult, and you think it’s a train wreck, look for the opportunities. There are always opportunities. Mine was to fight back and help make other people’s lives better. Find those moments of humour, joy and peace, enjoy life where you can and embrace the support of your family and friends. How did football help you to tackle the obstacles you are facing?

Playing, coaching and working in football for many years has taught me resilience. While life can have many highs, it also comes with countless setbacks, adversity and failures. But it’s how you react to life’s challenges and the team you surround yourself with that really matters. From my family and friends to the incredible FightMND Army, knowing I have

The community’s enormous support has been inspiring and overwhelming. We would never have been able to achieve what we have without the amazing support of the FightMND Army. We don’t know when the big breakthrough will come, but when it does, every person who bought a beanie or donated to FightMND through Daniher’s Drive, the Big Freeze, the 27 Challenge or at any other time, will know they played a valuable role in making it happen. Together we have formed a community, determined to fight back and end the suffering of those living with MND. Did you imagine you would receive an AO medal? Growing up in country NSW, an Order of Australia Medal was never in my thoughts. It’s an honour to be recognised but choosing to fight back against MND was never about awards. Life is a team game, so I like to think of the award as one for my family. I dedicated the AO to my family — to Jan, Lauren, Mick, Luke, Jess, Bec, Drew, Ben, Maddi, Cooper and Rosie. Their love and support have sustained and powered me. It’s difficult to bear witness to a progressive terminal disease, but their presence by my side is so important. My entire family, especially the grandkids, Cooper and Rosie, remind me every day to focus on what I have in my life, not what I haven’t.

What is FightMND’s goal? FightMND’s goal from the start has been a world without MND. When I was diagnosed with MND, we knew so little about it.

Outside of my family, I have been very proud of what FightMND has achieved. In seven years, we’ve rallied an army, committed $48.4m into research, invested nearly $5m in care equipment and been a voice for people who want to fight The Beast. People living with MND now have more opportunities to participate in research or clinical trials throughout Australia. It is proof of the accelerating progress we are making to end MND.

A cornerstone of Daniher’s Drive is fundraising and since the first staging of the event in 2015, millions of dollars have been raised by the participants through their team fundraising efforts. The best way to support Daniher’s Drive is to purchase a ticket in The Daniher’s Drive car raffle. You’ll go into the draw to win a brand-new Renault Koleos Intens, valued at $53,000. All funds raised from the raffle go directly towards vital MND research.

What energises you to keep fighting? Being part of a cause that is bigger than me gives me purpose and a meaning to live and fight. Fighting The Beast is not just about me, it’s about people and helping make other people’s lives better. The Beast has not been beaten so I will keep finding a way to fight, and to have fun while doing it.

There had been little research, there were no treatments and no cure. On top of that, very few people had even heard of MND. It was our goal to put MND in the spotlight and urge people to take up the fight for viable treatments and an ultimate cure. I wanted to provide hope for those diagnosed in the future. I wanted to do it by having fun ... doing things like the Big Freeze and Daniher’s Drive. As my family and I quickly discovered, you are capable of far more than you think and FightMND has shown this. FightMND has become one of the largest independent funders of MND research not only in Australia but globally. Our investments include 11 clinical trials and 17 drug development projects — projects that will help us achieve our goal of beating The Beast. After a record-breaking Big Freeze 7, we are also set to make another significant investment into research later this year.

As a family we’ve learnt that life is fragile and all the possible beautiful things in your life are not guaranteed to be there tomorrow, so look out for them and enjoy them when they arrive. Where is Daniher’s Drive going this year? This year’s Daniher’s Drive* will travel through Myrtleford, Lakes Entrance and Warragul, over four days, to support these resilient regional communities as they recover from bushfires and the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I knew I wanted to do something health orientated but the reason I chose pharmacy is because I would always be accessible to the public and to patients,” she says. Olenka got her first “on-thejob” experience while she was to nurture students and early career pharmacists, something she takes seriously.

Little wonder the 34-yearold manager of Chemist Warehouse Kedron took home the company’s inaugural Mario Verrocchi National Pharmacist of the Year Award in 2020.

She also enjoys scuba diving — “when the water is warmer” — and boxing, as well as grabbing a coffee at her local cafe when out walking the dogs.. For the future, Olenka is inspired by the theme of this year’s World Pharmacists Day on September 25: “Always trusted for your health”. “We provide a good balance of everything and people do look for that, being able to access all of those services. Whatever my patients are experiencing, I want to be able to help.”

Described by the Chemist Warehouse CEO after whom the award is named as “a standout” who’s “made an exemplary contribution to patient care and community pharmacy more broadly”, Olenka says she has always been interested in science and health.

At the time of her award, Olenka was also lauded for her care, passion and ability

“The ability to be a support person, someone for them to touch base with and to be able to provide encouragement and respond to questions, it’s really rewarding,” she says with a smile.

“Chemist Warehouse is really good about exploring new modalities and services, things like offering immunisations, which I’ve been trained in, and Covid vaccinations.”

Not to burst your bubble, but it’s likely the kids will still be at home; you could be working full time to pay off your mortgage; and, on top of that, your hitherto healthy, fit parents might now require your care. Welcome to the sandwich generation: typically, people in their 40s and 50s sandwiched between the twin demands of caring for their children, plus their ageing parents.

Flinders University’s College of Education, Psychology and Social Work researcher and educator Dr Helen McLaren Social analyst Mark McCrindle says it’s a growing demographic and “most of us will now end up in the sandwich at some point”.

So, what does all this mean for the meat in the sandwich — the middle-aged parents?

“There can be earnings impairment if you cut back on your work to care for a parent, concerns about When you’re in your 30s and deep in the trenches of raising a family while working, you might occasionally pop your head over the parapet and imagine what life will be like as you head into middle age. “The median age of a woman giving birth in Australia today is about 31. And that means a couple will have dependant children at the same time as their own parents are getting elderly,” Mark says. And the kids are hanging around for longer. A generation ago, they typically left home in their late teens or early 20s. Now, many stay on because of further study and unaffordable housing. Meanwhile, the elderly are living longer and ageing in their homes.

THE ABILITY TO LISTEN AS WELL CANCOMMUNICATEASHELPFORGESTRONGERRELATIONSHIPS WORDS LIZ M cGRATH

“In terms of relationships, what we see is a gradual distancing and a loss of closeness,” Briony explains.

Psychologist Briony Leo, from relationship wellness app Relish, says we lose a powerful social tool without face-to-face interaction.

“And by conversation I mean a two-way interaction where you were open to exploring the topic at hand, rather than airing your own views and opinions? Using this criteria, there’s a high probability that for most people it was a while ago,” she says. It’s an interesting question and one increasingly being asked in a world where technology, not to mention a global pandemic, is slowly slaying our ability to converse. And it’s costing us dearly, negotiation expert Sam Trattles“We’vesays.become keyboard warriors,” the author of I Love Negotiating says. “People are so interesting, but with so many of our relationships through text or email, we’re missing out on this wonderful opportunity to get to know each other better.”

in focus 60 The House of Wellness

“When was the last time you had a real conversation with someone,” wellness and success coach Georgia Bamber asks.

“Face-to-face interactions are the most natural and most rewarding of all social interactions. They allow us to connect with others, open up, process how we’re feeling, share our experiences.”

“In our recent Relationship Health Survey, a large proportion of people said they felt ignored and rejected by their partner due to their mobile phone use.

A lot of it is due to the fact that “most of us are pretty bad listeners”, says Georgia, the author of Achieve Anything You Want “We get no formal training in how to listen, people just muddle their way through,” she says. “You learn how to read and write and speak but no one teaches you how to listen.”

“We get no formal training in how to listen, people just muddle their way

4Try “would you rather” If you feel you know everything there is to know about your partner and there are no surprises left in conversation, try asking deeper questions and really listen to the answers, Briony says. “Even ‘would you rathers’, which are unpredictable and thought-provoking and allow you to see your partner anew, leading to deeper connection and intellectual stimulation,” she suggests.

“Every negotiation can be made smoother by making a conscious decision to listen more intently,” she says.

“It’s all about relationships and improving your conversational opportunities and being a better listener is the biggest facet of that,” Georgia says. “It greatly improves your ability to do your job. It leads to better collaboration. We often miss what is going on around us when all we want to do is shine. If people feel heard, you’ll make stronger connections and grow your social networks.” Sam agrees and says “great listeners are also great negotiators”.

Be brave

Engaging in conversation, particularly with those you don’t know, can be confronting, Sam says, but don’t be put off. “There might be an awkward moment to start with where it feels like it’s me versus you, but very quickly it becomes about ‘us’,” she says.

— Georgia Bamber

BE A GOOD LISTENER

Focus “People engage in conversations thinking their brain doesn’t need to attend,” Georgia says. “Rein in your thoughts and refocus. Don’t interrupt, let people speak. Don’t be afraid of silences. Ask clarifying questions. Give a summation and keep checking in.”

3Think about intention Georgia suggests thinking about what’s behind the words. “If you’re having a conversation with someone, think about the intention of what they’re saying, the thoughts and feelings they’re having. Reflect on what’s going on with them so you’re more compassionate and less reactionary. And as my mother would always say, ask people about themselves!”

“Asking good questions, looking for body language cues and thinking ‘what about you’ is your greatest currency in helping to get what you want with ease.”

It was the Greek philosopher Epictetus who said “we have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak”, a sentiment with which Georgia agrees. “Most of the interactions that we call conversations are something else altogether — fact-finding missions, attempts to persuade, time to show off, a chance to score points or complain, an opportunity to gossip and the list could go on,” she“Studiessays. suggest that while 70 to 80 per cent of our waking hours are spent in some form of communication, we only absorb 25 to 35 per cent of what we’reBest-sellingtold.” author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Stephen Covey puts it like this: “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”

“It’s also about looking after yourself, whether I’m taking care of my skin or if I’m smelling good, then that’s one less thing to worry about on the red carpet. I think it’s important that people look after themselves.”

Richard Madden has won a Golden Globe, starred in the biggest television franchise of our time and is about to make his superhero debut in the Marvel universe. So it’s hard to believe the ruggedly handsome Scotsman initially took up acting to build his confidence.

“Stunts can be nerve wracking, but I was filming Eternals at the time and my character can fly, so I was really used to being on ropes and hanging up in the air, which meant the process was dialled into me,” he says. “It was really good fun (to shoot). I

Staying on top of the pollen count

Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia health management educator Wendy Freeman says despite its common name, hay fever is rarely caused by hay and doesn’t cause a fever! “It’s caused by allergens, like pollen, as well as dust mites, moulds and animal hair and skin coming into contact with your eyes and nose,” she says. “And while for some it can come and go, for others it can impact sleep, concentration and normal day-to-day life.”

Hay treatmentfever options You should seek advice from your pharmacist or doctor about medications to relieve hay fever symptoms, which will sometimes mean multiple treatments, WendyThesesays.can include nonsedating antihistamines (tablets, syrups, nasal sprays, eye drops), intranasal corticosteroid (INCS) sprays, sprays containing a combination of INCS and antihistamine, salt water nasal sprays and rinses.

“There are a range of online sites and apps that forecast the risk of pollen in the atmosphere in your area, including on the National Asthma Council website,” Dr Roberts says. “Look at the forecast ahead so you can manage your exposure as much as possible on days when the count is high.

The Australian government says while symptoms of hay fever and asthma can be similar to Covid-19: ✱ fever doesn’t occur with hay fever or allergic asthma ✱ itchy nose, itchy and watery eyes and itchy throat and palate are common symptoms of hay fever but not coronavirus However, if you have symptoms that are in any way different to what you usually experience with hay fever or asthma, you should get tested for coronavirus and stay at home until you get your results.

“If you have hay fever and you’re exposed to particular pollens, your body thinks it’s a threat and triggers an allergic reaction by releasing a chemical known as histamine,”

While there is no cure for hay fever, there are many safe and effective treatments.

Up to 18 per cent of Aussie kids are also thought to be affected by hay fever, the most common allergic disorder in Australia.

Other suggestions include using re-circulated air in your car when pollen levels are high, taking a shower after activities where you might have been exposed and rinsing your eyes regularly with cold water to flush away pollen.

IS IT HAY FEVER OR DO I HAVE COVID-19?

“Minimising your exposure to allergens can also help to reduce symptoms, so stay indoors when it’s windy and during thunderstorms if possible and keep the windows closed.

For Australia’s 4.6 million hay fever sufferers, spring can be the worst time of the year as minuscule pollens from grasses, weeds and trees fill the air.

“It’s also important to have an up-to-date hay fever or asthma action plan and to follow it,” Dr Roberts says.

Sleep became an even more precious commodity once our little one arrived, and with it the realisation that we were getting much better quality sleep solo. It wasn’t only the loud breathing. I go to bed and rise early, while John likes to stay up late and doesn’t need as much sleep. So it makes sense to retreat to different rooms and get the ultimate amount of slumber — and legroom. We still get our physical fix. Like anything with a baby, you learn to get creative. For us, a nightly ritual keeps us connected. We have a good cuddle and a chat before I go to bed, sharing our highs and lows of the day. It works for us, and for some of our friends who have decided to give it a go, too.”

4Encourage rest with sleep aids. Play white noise or calming music, try a short meditation or read a few pages of a book to wind down.

Separate doesn’t equal separated While couples may be concerned about losing intimacy, Dr Harrington says sleep divorce often encourages more physical connection.

“You’re more conscious that you’re spending more physical time apart, and when you’re well rested you’re in a better frame of mind and you want to be more intimate,” she says. And it’s a chance to get more creative with your sex life, Sydney sleep coach Cheryl Fingleson says. “Sex doesn’t have to only happen once you’re both in bed,” Cheryl says. “You could find time to join your partner in their room in the morning or while tucking them into bed at night.”

First personIf your partner’s night-time habits are disrupting your shut-eye, sleep divorce may be the saviour that helps you restTheeasy.concept is simple. A couple chooses to retreat to separate rooms, so both parties get a good night’s sleep — and stay in each other’s good books.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT Haemochromatosis

Men and women at risk While men and women inherit haemochromatosis equally, males experience symptoms more frequently with an estimated ratio of 3:1. The difference is attributed to physiological blood loss in menstruation and/or childbirth in women.

6

7 Can lead prematuretodeath If undetected or left untreated, the condition can cause organ or tissue damage that can be fatal.

8

“In the early stages of iron overload caused by haemochromatosis, symptoms may be completely absent or very non-specific, including general fatigue and weakness, weight loss, abdominal pain and joint aches,” he says.

3

2It is a conditiongenetic Also known as inherited iron overload disorder, it is the most common genetic disorder in Australia and affects about one in 200 people of northern European origin. “It is an autosomal recessive genetic condition caused when a person inherits a faulty gene from both parents,” Edith Cowan University health research lead and hepatologist Professor John K. Olynyk says.

health wise

“Higher levels of iron can cause cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer. People with liver problems may develop an enlarged liver, jaundice, easy bruising and pain in the liver.

It can debilitatingbe “Many (patients) have had multiple joint replacements as a result of the osteoarthritis caused by haemochromatosis,” Prof Olynyk says. “The fatigue and loss of sexual function that accompanies undiagnosed and untreated haemochromatosis can lead to depression.”

1 What haemochromatosis?is It is a condition that occurs when your body absorbs too much iron from your diet.

“In cases where the stores of iron are very high, the patient may need to have about 500ml of blood removed every fortnight for many months until they reach maintenance.“Inmostcases the blood can be removed at a blood donation centre if the patient is registered with Lifeblood as a therapeutic donor.”

8Is easily treated Haemochromatosis is treated essentially by donating blood to reduce the levels of excess iron stored around the organs, Prof Olynyk says. “This is done by the process of phlebotomy or venesections, which is the same as a blood donation.

A common genetic disorder in Australia, iron overload is often undiagnosed

4 Symptoms similar to low iron The early generalised symptoms are common to many conditions including low iron, which is why it is important to get your iron levels checked before taking iron supplements or iron-fortified foods, Prof Olynyk says.

“The heart, rarely, can be affected and symptoms will include palpitations due to damage of the heart muscle, breathlessness with physical activity and swollen ankles,” Prof Olynyk says. “If the pancreas is affected this may lead to type 2 diabetes with symptoms including thirst and increased need to urinate, skin infections ... blurry vision, dizziness and weight gain or loss.” If the sex organs are affected, he says women may experience irregular periods or early menopause and loss of libido, while men may experience impotence and shrinking testicles.

It varies from person to person, but haemochromatosis may affect the liver, heart, joints, pancreas, skin and sex organs.

Many people are familiar with the lethargy and health risks associated with low iron levels, but it appears there is less awareness about the dangers of too much iron in the body. Here are the key facts.

Increasing awareness “Most couples don’t know this screening exists, or they don’t think about it,” says Professor Martin Delatycki, clinical director at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute’s Victorian Clinical Genetics Services. “Most births are still to couples who have not been offered genetic carrier screening, and the vast majority of babies born with one of these genetic conditions are born into families with no known history of the condition,” he says.

72 The House of Wellness

About one in 20 Australians carries a gene change or a faulty gene that increases the risk of their children being born with cystic fibrosis, fragile X syndrome or spinal muscular atrophy. Everyone carries several gene changes and if their partner is a carrier of a change in the same gene, that can lead to a child having a genetic disorder. Traditionally, genetic carrier screening is offered to people with a family history of their childrenorgenecarryifpartnersconditionstheseandtheirbecause, bothpeoplethesamechangefault, eachofhas Genetic carrier screening can help couples understand and prepare for the risk of passing on an inherited condition

What is genetic carrier screening?

The right advice

If a person is a carrier of a genetic condition, genetic counselling helps them decide what to do next.

Genetic screening tests certain genes to see if parents carry a faulty gene — if they do, there’s a one-in-four chance each of their children will have the condition. If the woman is a carrier of an X-linked condition, such as fragile X syndrome, there is up to a 50 per cent chance her sons will be born with the condition. There is also a chance of daughters being born with this condition, which is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability.

Matter of choice

Some couples don’t want to know either way,” Dr Burton says.

“When my second husband, Simon, 43, and I decided to have a child he had a genetic carrier screening test to find out if he was a carrier of CF. He isn’t and our son, Harvey, is a healthy four-year-old. “Ned’s health has got better but if I’d known the risks of him having CF before he was born, I could have prepared myself for caring for a baby with complications.”

Increasing awareness of genetic carrier screening is about allowing couples to make an informed choice, Dr Burton says.

“Think through the worstcase scenario: ‘If we are both carriers what would we do? Would we go down the path of IVF or testing pregnancies?’

“The chances of our second son, Lucas, having CF was one in four, so early in the pregnancy I had a test ... I was very distressed because I didn’t know how I’d look after two sick babies but, thankfully, Lucas didn’t have CF.

SOON AFTER FIBROSIS.WATERHOUSE’STESSASON,NED,WASBORN,HEWASDIAGNOSEDWITHCYSTICSO

“When I had Ned 15 years ago, I didn’t have any screening because I didn’t know it was an option. My first husband and I were both carriers of cystic fibrosis (CF), but we didn’t know — there was no family“Nedhistory.wasvery sick when he was born and we were told he had cystic fibrosis ... Around that time, I discovered I was pregnant again, too, although it wasn’t planned.

“People are aware that testing is available for conditions like Down syndrome and they’re aware of routine ultrasound scans to look for growth and congenital abnormalities. With genetic carrier screening, they can get a heads-up before a baby is conceived,” she says. But it is important to consider the implications of screening before going ahead. If you find out you are at increased chance of having a child with a certain condition, will that change your plans?

Genetic carrier screening can look for cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy and fragile X syndrome, or expanded carrier screening tests check for hundreds of conditions. Tests require a blood or saliva sample and typically cost about $400, or $750 for expanded carrier screening.

“A couple can use IVF so they can test embryos and choose not to implant an embryo with that genetic condition,” says Wendy Burton, of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

If couples wouldn’t change anything, they may choose not to screen,” Prof Delatycki says. “But if you would do something, that’s a good reason to do genetic testing.”

We have long known the benefits of mindfulness, but there’s one area of your life you may not have realised it can reinvigorate: your sex life. According to psychologists, being more present during sex (that’s no more thinking about the washing or worrying about how you look) can take your next intimate encounter to another level.

In the moment

“When people discuss mind-blowing sex, it typically means that their conscious awareness is turned off, and they are fully present and enjoying the moment. If a person is present in the moment-to-moment sensations, sex can be truly mind-blowing,” Dr Cohen says.

Wandering mind How many times has your mind wandered off to something totally and utterly unsexy such as your to-do list? Given sex is as much a mental exercise as it is a physical one, not being in the present moment can sometimes rob you of a truly satisfying experience.

Learning to be more mindful

“If you’re curious about mindful sex practices — the best place to start is by engaging in mindfulness outside of a sexual context such as before bed or heading to work so you can more easily integrate those skills during sex,” sex coach Georgia Grace says. “Most people spend their whole day disconnected from their body, needs and desires, so it’s pretty tricky to just shut the mind off ... and be instantly present — this takes time and intentional practise.”

WORDS

“When we are distracted by self-judgment or anxiety about performance, it can negatively impact both our experience and satisfaction derived from sex, as well as make us less likely to orgasm,” Dr Marisa T. Cohen says.

Dr Cohen is head of couple relationships at Paired, an app designed to enhance communication between partners and help them learn more about their relationship.

Dial down self-judgment, turn off performance anxiety and give mindfulness a go — these are the secrets to better sex, no bedroom acrobatics required

Alter pathwaysneural

Aim to be more mindful every day, whether it’s focusing on the sensations you encounter while drinking your morning coffee or even brushing your teeth. When you’re ready, Dr Cohen says you can try mindfulness in the bedroom. Look to focus on one sensation during sex, such as touch. “Pay attention to how your partner’s skin feels or how the pressure of their hands on you feels. As you get more comfortable letting go of other thoughts, begin to explore other senses, such as smell or taste.” An environment conducive to mindful sex is also important. Georgia suggests creating a space that feels sensual and is free from distraction. “Try using blindfolds and sensory items for sensation play, eye gaze with each other as you breathe,” sheDrsays.Cohen stresses it’s totally normal if you can’t quieten your mind entirely. When you notice your mind wandering, acknowledge that it’s happening without judgment then gently bring your mind back to the present moment, she advises.

It seems our minds are often everywhere but where they should be when it comes to sex, with a US study finding both men and women guilty of wandering minds. The research found women may be less sexually mindful due to a tendency to be more focused on their partner’s pleasure rather than their own arousal, while men are less likely to be mindful during sex due to the pressure to be sexually assertive. But you can train your brain — through neuroplasticity — to approach sex in a more mindful way. By putting mindfulness into practise, you can alter the brain’s neural pathways and, in turn, the way you think.

TRAININGWEEKLYGUIDEFORBEGINNERSMONDAY Swim 50-60 minutes (including swim technique/drills)

Train for success Beginners should aim to train five to six hours a week, Fluid Movements coach Lyndsey Foster says. This is adequate for a sprint distance triathlon consisting of a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.

Other people may have bigger dreams, working their way up to the famous Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, which is a 3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42km run, and has competitors cycling through active lava fields.

TUESDAY Rest WEDNESDAY Cycle outdoors 45-60 minutes (as fitness develops incorporate a short run off the bike)

Once you are comfortable, begin combining them, she says. For example, you might add a short 5-to10-minute run off the bike. Eventually you will be able to go for longer and mix up your training sessions with different swim/bike/run combinations.Usingthisapproach most people will be race-ready in as little as six to eight weeks, Lyndsey says.

SUNDAY Rest Register for a race Signing up for an event is a great way to get motivated. A standard distance, or Olympic triathlon, is a 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run. But there are plenty of events that are shorter or longer. Don’t be ashamed to take on a smaller course when you start out, Michelle says.

“You don’t need anything fancy,” Michelle says. “You just need stuff that’s safe. A bike with some brakes on it — doesn’t matter if it’s a mountain bike or a fancy pants road bike. Some running shoes, a pair of goggles and you’re kitted out.”

People think of triathlons and immediately expensive bikes and swimsuits spring to mind, but there’s no need to splash any cash.

GIVES HER UNIQUE VIEW ON ALL

It’s understandable we’re tired of restrictions and the toll taken on our families, mental health and businesses. However, look back and consider what we’ve achieved as a community. Australia has been the envy of the world with our response to the pandemic and our community has certainly risen to the occasion. We’ve followed advice, even when it hurt, for the sake of others as well as ourselves.

wise POSITIVES FROM A PANDEMIC As

Yes, in retrospect, some things may have been better if done differently, but it has been a steep learning curve for everyone, and we’ve come such a long way with our knowledge since early last year. It’s incredibly sad that there have been deaths and businesses have been hit so hard, but through our collective effort we seem to have kept this virus at bay. We are understandably upset by being corralled, having to sanitise, wear masks, and keep our distance from others, but simply look to some other countries at what the alternative might have been. Then again, there’s a spin-off — last year saw less influenza cases than usual. Eureka! This hygiene message works, keep it Someup!in the media (and more in social media) are quick to highlight mistakes and it’s easy to dwell on the negatives, but take time to consider the good work done by the frontline and backroom workers dedicated to looking after us. And don’t forget the scientists who worked tirelessly to develop vaccines in record time.

Maybe we need to put it all in perspective with a collective “thank you” and we can take positive action such as continuing hygiene recommendations, shopping locally, supporting struggling businesses and most of all calling to touch base with friends and neighbours. However, probably the most important thing we can do to help fight this pandemic is to get vaccinated. I completed my AstraZeneca course recently and I feel really good about it. Just so you know, I suffered life-threatening clots to my lungs a few years back, but because I understand the science I knew this did not make me any more at risk of the extremely rare clotting syndrome than anyone else. I weighed this up with the knowledge that if I was to catch the virus without vaccination I would be many times more likely to develop thatAlso, complication.importantly, over the last few months we’ve learned that the rare clotting syndrome is treatable if caughtUnlessearly.you have one of the very rare reasons for not getting vaccinated you need to ignore the fearmongers and listen to those who know the evidence, and yourVaccinationhealth. has been one of the most effective public health measures in history, along with sanitation, of course. Our ancestors lived in fear of infectious diseases that we hardly even know anymore. Our vaccination programs work. We take calculated risks every day. It’s this calculation of risk versus benefit that’s the key. If you’re worried, please talk to your doctor and complete your vaccination course when your turn comes. health we emerge from winter, flowers will bloom and the weather will get warmer. Study co-author Dr Rona Weerasuriya found nature gives people the opportunity to experience relaxation, rejuvenation and connection with community, among a host of other health and wellbeing benefits.

Research shows the benefits of connecting with nature include everything from boosting the immune system, reducing stress and lowering blood pressure to improving mood and increasing the ability to focus. Plus, the spring sunshine is a great way to increase your vitamin D stores, produce extra serotonin and lift your spirits.

Leave the mixture to thicken for 5 minutes if you’re in a hurry, or overnight if you’re being organised. Divide among individual jars (or pile into one big airtight container) and refrigerate. Stored this way, they will keep for up to four days.

Icing (confectioners’) sugar, honey, lemon wedges My child made me this one Mother’s Day. So naturally I took his beautiful gesture of love, redesigned it with some improvements (created a lazier version) and called it my own. Preheat the oven to 180C. Whisk together the eggs, vanilla and cream. Place the baguette slices in a single layer in a baking dish lined with baking paper, and pour the egg and cream mixture over the top. Soak for 5 minutes, then flip over and soak for another 10 minutes. By now, most of the liquid should be absorbed. Pour the sugar on to a plate. Carefully dip one side of each soggy slice into the sugar, so you have a crusted side. Wipe any leftover egg and cream mix from the tray, then put the baguette slices back on the paper, sugarside up. Dust with cinnamon and bake for 7 minutes.

“Proper camping can be quite a culture shock because the body’s adapted to another way of existing,” Australian Association of Social Workers member Kit Kline says. “Glamping is a really good way to slowly integrate back into the natural world in a comfortable environment.” Kit is the founder of Nature Based Therapy, which helps people address stress, depression and other mentalhealth disorders through nature. She believes slowing down to nature’s pace “reduces anxiety and helps regulate emotions”.

Less is more Emma Gavala’s 2017 thesis for her Masters at the London School of Economics was among the world’s first academic papers about glamping. It’s not just “upgraded camping”, Emma says; it’s “accommodation that’s unique and showcases nature” with limited hassle, from tents to treehouses or barns.

Getting back to nature

The founder of international glamping consulting firm Gavala & Co is critical of the widespread obsession with “supercharging the tent ... so that it’s a substitute for a hotel”.

The global glamping market was estimated at $2.42bn in 2020 and is expected to hit $6.98bn in 2028, according to a Grand View Research report published in March.

In Australia, however, “the term ‘luxury’ has taken the right form in glamping: it’s the uniqueness of the experience”. Here, it’s “more laidback, smaller, and there’s respect for the environment and community,” Emma says.

APPLES NEVER FALL LIANNE MORIARTY (Macmillan Australia) RRP $32.99 It’s often said the people we love the most can hurt us the deepest. But are they capable of murder? Aussie bestselling author Moriarty revels in revealing a family’s dirty little secrets — and Apples Never Fall is no exception. From all appearances, the Delaney family should be leading contented lives. Former tennis coaches Joy and Stan have retired after years of success and their four adult children, while never quite living up to their parents’ hopes as tennis stars, are busy with their own lives. When Joy goes missing, her children are forced to re-examine their parents’ marriage and family history with fresh eyes. And who is the mystery girl who lobs on the Delaney’s doorstep? And why did she choose their family? One for Moriarty fans, with enough twists to keep you reading to the end.

THE OTHERS MARK (HachetteBRANDIAustralia) RRP $32.99 The acclaimed Australian author’s newest offering is a mystery in itself. Is it dystopian or a tale of survival? The story of the lengths a father will go to protect his son from “the others”? With echoes of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, the sense of foreboding grows with the recounting of each day in the son’s diary. He adds dictionary meanings of words his father uses, often noting he thinks he has the right meaning where there are several, and includes drawings of episodes from their lives in the lonely farmhouse. It is a hard existence for the pair, a drought undermining their efforts to be self-sustaining away from any human contact. But there are signs all is not as his father has told him. This is a page-turner that will have the reader keen to find the answer to the question this novel poses.

The surrounds are picture perfect, the neighbours friendly — until a double murder destroys the serenity of the Hollow’s Edge community. When Ruby Fletcher is convicted, a collective sigh of relief goes up. After all, Ruby isn’t really one of them — she’s a grifter who used her friendship with Harper Nash to shoehorn herself into their lives. Imagine everyone’s surprise when the conviction is overturned and she returns to Harper’s house, taking up residence as if nothing ever happened. Suddenly, everyone is looking over their shoulder worried about what Ruby will do next — after all, they all bore witness against her at the murder trial. Then Harper starts receiving threatening notes. Someone, it appears, knows more than they are letting on about the deaths. A tight, tense read with a deft twist at the end of the tale.

‘No, we are still in love and we are very happy and we have no plans to leave each other.’ These are the questions that can often follow the revelation that my wife and I sleep in different rooms. It started for me recently when our four-year-old son was sick and when putting him to bed he asked if he could sleep in our bed. Our bed, which he refers to as ‘the family bed’, inferring some claim on it that is equal to both mine and myOnwife’s.anormal night he either goes to bed with Kel or he wanders into our bed at some point during the night. So, we thought that while he is sick he can go to bed in the family bed and stay for the whole night. It gets a little crowded with three in the bed — not to mention the dog and two cats. In fact, I suspect the dog and both cats, when chatting to each other during the day, also refer to it as ‘the family bed’.

98 The House of Wellness live we THE RADIO AND TV FUNNYMAN ON THE IMPORTANT ISSUES IN LIFE

‘How’d you sleep last night?’ asks Cat 1. ‘Started off being pushed around courtesy of a whole bunch of tossing and turning but eventually settled right on Dad’s face before he woke me up coughing and spluttering and whingeing like he had some sort of fur ball. I hate how much room the humans take up on the family bed.’ So, in an effort to offer our sick four-year-old a good night’s sleep I agreed to sleep in the spare room — not the family bed. There I was for the next eight hours — no dog, no cats, no son and no wife. I’d forgotten about the luxury of a queen-size bed. The joy of spreading out — I’ve spent the past five years balancing on the edge of a king-size bed with the skill of an Olympic gymnast. Then, of course, there’s the comfort of having noMyinterruptions.REMreturned, my dreams returned and more than one hour of solid sleep returned (I actually got eight hours). I was woken up by a sliver of sunlight dancing through the gap beneath the blind and not a cat’s tail or my son’s hand or my dog’s butt! I bounced out of bed so energised that my wife wondered what was going on with me. I felt and, in my opinion, looked 10 years younger. It turns out that sleep is really important and getting the right quality and the right quantity has a direct impact on your health. I had read about this most of my life but largely ignored it thinking that I knew better than well researched science. So a dilemma was immediately presented to me. Do I maintain my spot in the family bed, respecting the unit of humans and animals to whom I have dedicated and committed my life? I should embrace any opportunity I have to further bond with the ones that I love the most. This would surely bring us closer together and it would maintain the culturally accepted norm of sharing the family bed ... I get that the dog and cats may not be as culturally accepted, but just roll with me for argument’s sake. Or do I turn tail and take up residence in the spare room? Following which my energy levels will go through the roof, my productivity will improve and I’ll look like a teenager for the first time in 30 years. An added benefit of moving to the spare room would be that those on the family bed would now have more space. Can you tell I’ve already pushed this argument? It seems like a no-brainer but the experiment lasted only three nights until our son was better. As much as the health benefits were obvious I felt like a flat mate and not part of the family unit. So, it’s back to the family bed where I can balance on the edge, get woken up every hour and push the tail out of my face — but I’ll be with myHavingpack! said that, I will be the first to raise my hand to valiantly head back to the spare room at the next sign of illness.
