urkish-American Eyup Sultan Karate Team participated in their first competition, “16th Anniversary Thomas La puppet Memorial Classic Championship” which was held on Sunday, June 14, 2015. There were 306 athletes who participated in this prestigious tournament. However, Eyup Sultan Karate Team, with 31 participants, received 30 medals - 9 gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze medals. The accomplishments for the 7-months-old karate club was unheard of. However, the key for this kind of success was undoubtedly their Coach, Sensei Meral Olmez, who is a distinguished athlete and coach who has taken our athletes on a life-time journey which others may only dream of. She is a Two Time World Champion, Former Turkish National Athlete, and the Director of Education and After School Enrichment Programs.

NYPD Chaplain Imam Khalid Latif delivered the opening prayer at the Muslim Officers Society dinner Thursday night in the Grand Prospect Hall. The Muslim store employee who saved 15 French Jews during the terrorist attack on a kosher supermarket was honored at the dinner. Bathily, a Muslim immigrant from Mali who worked at the Hyper Cacher supermarket in Paris, was in the basement when a gunman entered the kosher store. He hid the Jewish shoppers, including a 2-year-old child, in the supermarket freezer.
The NYPD Muslim Officers Society flew Lassana Bathily to New York to be honored at their Annual Scholarship Dinner, and Mayor de Blasio on Friday presented him with an official city proclamation honoring his bravery in the Hyper Cacher attack in Paris. De Blasio — who met with Bathily at the Islamic Center of Brighton Beach — called him a, “real hero” who “stood up to protect human life even when his own life was in danger.” “We are so blessed to have you with us,” he said.
Masked Men Attack Turkish Mosque in Massachusetts “Ahiska Turks, also known as Meskhetian Turks, were expelled from their homeland in 1944 – the Meskheti region in Georgia – by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in an attempt to deport Turks from the shores of the Black Sea”

Turkish mosque, built by Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs and the Council of Ahiska Turkish-American Associations and opened this March in Massachusetts, was targeted by a group of masked men, who threw stones to break the windows. According to an official and community leader, several windows were broken and no one was injured. The attack on the Ahiska Turkish American Cultural Center and Mosque in the city of West Springfield took place at 8:15 p.m. local time when five unidentified masked men began hurling stones. “We are investigating whether the attack was motivated by Islamophobia,” Yasar Colak, religious affairs counselor at Turkey's Embassy in Washington, said. “It is too early to make a comment on this at this moment, but if we come to such a conclusion, we will take the necessary steps,” he added. “Several people were inside the mosque when the attack took place,” said President of the mosque Mehdi Osmanlı. He also said that police came to the scene of the attack after approximately an hour and launched an investigation into what happened and whether the attack was motivated by Islamophobia. The attack comes amid an increasing level of Islamophobic attacks against US Muslims. A little over a month ago, the New Yorkbased organization called the American
Freedom Defense Initiative (also known as Stop the Islamization of America) held an event awarding $10,000 to whoever could offer the best depiction of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad in Garland, Texas. Two gunmen opened fire on security guards outside the event the night it was held. Ahiska Turks, also known as Meskhetian Turks, were expelled from their homeland in 1944 – the Meskheti region in Georgia – by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in an attempt to deport Turks from the shores of the Black Sea.

Green Card from filing a Cancellation of Removal
“Cancellation of Removal application allows a non-permanent resident foreign national and a permanent resident foreign national who is in removal proceedings (formerly known as deportation proceedings) and charged under either Section 212 or 237 of the INA to cancel the deportation and get the green card.”

U.S. as a legal permanent resident. However, an applicant who is granted cancellation will not be able to apply again in the future if ever he or she commits another deportable offense.
1- have been a legal permanent resident for not less than five years; 2- have resided in the United States for seven years after having been admitted in any status, and 3- have not been convicted of an aggravated felony.
This is for the people who have been in the U.S. without a legal status and are facing the deportation. This nonpermanent resident who is in removal process to be eligible to stay in the U.S. and get the green card must have the following requirements:
Once the Immigration Judge has determined that the foreign national is eligible to file an application for cancellation of removal, the Immigration Judge will weigh the positive equities against the negative factors.
1- been physically present in the U.S. for a continuous period of not less than ten years immediately preceding the date of such application; 2- been a person of good moral character during such period;
ho is as a Green Card Holder eligible to file for Cancellation? The green card holder who is in removal process to lose his/her green card must have the following requirements to qualify for Cancellation of Removal:
Who is as a Nonpermanent Resident eligible to file for Cancellation?
This person should show that he or she has the following: a- close family relatives in the United States who would suffer hardship if the foreign national is removed from the U.S. (although not a requirement), b- family ties in the United States, c- a history of longtime residence in the U.S., d- positive employment history and payment of taxes, e- business or property ties in the U.S., f- been rehabilitated and is of good moral character The Immigration Judge may also take into account any other favorable factors, such as the financial impact of departure from the U.S. and significant health conditions, conditions in the country to which he or she would be removed and the age of the applicant at the time of U.S. entry, and ties to the country of removal.
3- not been convicted of an offense under Section 212(a)(2), 237(a)(2), or 237(a)(3); and 4) established that removal would result in exceptional and extremely unusual hardship to the alien’s spouse, parent, or child who is a citizen of the U.S. or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence. When an applicant is convicted of a crime that is not included in the sections mentioned above, that particular crime may make him or her ineligible to apply for cancellation of removal as a nonpermanent resident since the applicant may not fulfill the good moral character requirement. Whether a crime renders the person ineligible for lack of good moral character will depend on the Immigration Judge’s evaluation of the seriousness of the offense. What is the meaning of “Meeting the Extreme and Unusual Hardship Requirement”? The most difficult requirement to meet in a cancellation of removal case for a nonpermanent resident is the extreme and unusual hardship requirement. The person not only is required to have a qualifying relative such as a child, spouse, or parent who is a green card holder or citizen of the U.S., but also show that the applicant’s removal would cause hardship to that qualifying relative that goes beyond the normal hardship that is expected in case of removal, such as separation or financial hardship. If the applicant’s qualifying relative has a serious medical condition that either cannot be treated in the country of removal or medical access is not available there, this hardship easily can be proven. It is recommended to have the witnesses and documentations to show the positive factors for both cancellation of removal applicants. If someone you know is placed in removal proceedings, you can contact our law firm to work on his or her application for cancellation of removal.
Immigration Judge will make the decision to approve or deny the cancellation of removal application by considering all the factors. If the Immigration Judge approves the application, the applicant’s convictions will no longer subject him or her to deportation, and the applicant will be restored to legal permanent resident status as of the date of initial admission to the
Hey, wait a second… I’m not working for free! By Timur Akpinar
I
t doesn’t take a genius to realize it’s a tough job market out there. Many industries have set up shop in places where labor is cheap and environmental regulations are lax. Furthermore, technology has shifted the boundaries of geography, with many jobs being filled from anywhere that has a high speed internet connection. This translates into large numbers of highly skilled candidates out there eager for work.
We see the results of this in many classified ads for employment. Some listings read, “We can’t pay you at the start, but you’ll receive marketable experience!” Others offer candidates a chance to “Build up your portfolios and receive exposure!” And some ads say, “Start with us and receive valuable free training!” In a social contract that was once firmly entrenched in getting paid good money for an honest day’s work, these concepts can seem alienating to many. But the economy being what it is, some candidates have bitten the bullet and taken free gigs, whether in the form of internships or other arrangements. People sometimes figure it’s better to have any form of gainful work to put on a resume, even if it doesn’t involve a paycheck. But some arrangements can raise issues of legality under existing labor laws, particularly in the area of internships. If someone takes an internship with a “for-profit” private sector employer, there are certain conditions that must be satisfied under the Fair Labor Standards Act if the person is to work for free. If all six elements listed below are satisfied, then the internship is not considered an employment relationship, which means that minimum wage and overtime provisions do not apply. ▪ The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment. ▪ The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern. ▪ The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff. ▪ The employer that provides the training derives no immediate
advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion, its operations may actually be impeded. ▪ The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship. ▪ The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship. (Source: United States Department of Labor) Naturally, the satisfaction of some of these elements can be a matter of debate. An intern might see things one way, while the employer sees them another. According to the Department of Labor, if the employer uses interns as substitutes for regular workers, or to supplement its workforce during specific time periods, those interns would be entitled to minimum wages and overtime wages. In this difficult job market, some candidates might feel that it’s better to have something to put on a resume instead of sitting idle while waiting for the next career opportunity to arrive. On the flip side, job seekers might feel that working for free is ridiculous, and that no one should benefit from their hard efforts without paying good money.

Heat Wave in Pakistan Has Killed Around 140 People
A
n intense heat wave over three days has killed more than 130 people in Pakistan's largest city Karachi and other districts of southern Sindh province.
The heat wave is the worst in at least a decade, but the arrival of monsoon rains in the coming days should bring relief, Meteorologist Mohammad Hanif said.
Saturday's temperature reached 44.8 degrees Celsius (112.64 degrees Fahrenheit) in the southern port city of Karachi – the highest-recorded temperature in Pakistan in the last 15 years just short of an all-time high in the city of 47 C in June 1979.
According to Pakistan's meteorlogical office, very hot and humid weather is likely to continue on Monday, but cooler weather is forecasted for Tuesday. More than 2,000 people died in a heat wave in neighbouring India last month.
Egypt Opens Gaza Border Crossing
E
gypt opened its Rafah border crossing with Gaza in both directions Saturday for the first time in three months.
Gaza, a small impoverished coastal enclave, is under blockade by neighboring Israel, and Egypt has kept its Rafah crossing largely shut since Cairo's Islamist president was toppled by the army in 2013. Egypt briefly opened Rafah last month to allow stranded Palestinians to return home. Gaza's access to Egypt is the only border, including the Mediterranean Sea, not controlled by Israel.
A Palestinian official said seven trucks with building materials for the private sector entered Gaza on Saturday. It's the first time since 2007 that Egypt has allowed a commercial shipment via Rafah, which is mainly for passengers and humanitarian aid. Abu Sabha called on the Egyptian authorities to permanently open the Rafah crossing, citing that there are around 15,000 Palestinians with humanitarian needs who require travel, including 4,000 patients and 3,000 students.
Try Simit at Simit and Smith in New York and New Jersey
S o
imit is a traditional bread eaten throughout the Balkans and Mediterranean for breakfast and as a snack during the day. Often it is called a Turkish Bagel. Simit are actually softer and lighter on the inside and crunchier on the utside than a bagel. It is round, it’s doughy, but it’s not a bagel. Simit or Turkish Bagels are the iconic bread rings encrusted with black sesame seeds that have been produced in Istanbul since 1525, and very often sold in the street, where they are still available today in red carts. An ideal snack on the go, perfect paired with a glass of Turkish çay (or Tea).
local factory and always freshly baked with no preservatives. They have three varieties: original with sesame, whole wheat with sesame, and multigrain and also offer a variety of other regional pastries known as poğaça (pronounced po-acha) and treats.
Simit and Smith will open in the fall season on Main Avenue. Simit and Smith partnered with Toros restaurants. With full breakfast and pastry menus, there is going to be a garden outdoor seating. After this branch they will be heading to Washington DC, Boston, Houston and Toronto/Canada.
The President and CEO of Simit and Smith Gökhan Çakmak recently announced big news to the Paterson Community that
Çakmak said, “During Ramadan Cliffside Park Simit and Smith store will be serving ‘Hot Ramadan Pide’ specially made for only Ramadan. After 5PM everyday all Ramadan. We also offer wholesale discounted prices to all mosques for iftar dinners. After Ramadan we will re-decorate our Cliffside Park store to serve customers better.”
A simit is a sesame seed-crusted bread with a fluffier interior that is sold from carts on every corner of Turkey and eaten plain, without any spreads, usually with a cup of hot tea. It’s available in Manhattan and Cliffside Park as well.
Çakmak also gave a piece of good news about a bread factory which is going to be established in September and located in New Jersey in a 16,000-square-foot (1,500 m2) facility. The bread factory will be able to produce 20 thousands breads every day. “The bread factory will be opening in mid September and October we will be planning a grand opening with big names visiting from Turkey and from all over the U.S.” he said.
These Turkish bagels found their way to Manhattan nearly three years ago when Simit and Smith opened its first location on the Upper West Side. Now they have 6 different locations in New York and New Jersey. Each SIMIT + SMITH Simit is hand-rolled by Artisans at their
10 Things You Must Do in Ramadan
IN RAMADAN’S HOLY SEASON, MUSLIMS FOCUS ON FAITH Ibrahim Kurtulus
‘Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the month during which Muslims observe fasting from morning first light (Fajr Prayer) to the evening twilight (Maghreb Prayer). The term Ramadan is literally driven from al-Ramd, which means ‘burning heat of the sun’. It is believed that this name is given to the fasting month due to the thirst experienced during fasting”
F
asting is an obligation in Islam not an option. It is one of the five pillars on which Islam is built. The benefits of fasting are manifold. Fasting has personal, social, hygienic and best of all, spiritual benefits. Throughout the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk. Here are 15 things to do during Ramadan.
of our fasts.
1. Let us make it a habit to visit the mosque as often as possible but at least once a day with our families.
7. Let us at least try to complete reading the Quran with meaning once.
2. Let us make it a habit to break fast with fellow Muslims in the mosque at least once a week. 3. Let us invite our non-Muslim friends and neighbors to join us in the breaking
4. Let us pool our efforts and resources to feeding the homeless. 5. Let us be extra-generous and donate our money to worthy causes. 6. Let us encourage our children to offer taraweeh prayers with us at the mosque.
anyone and control our anger in all situations. 12. Let us spend more time with our families especially in breaking the fast. 13. Let us make sure that we don't miss our Fajr prayer and pray all the other prayers on time. 14. Let us donate at least one book on Islam to a local library.
8. Let us ensure that we mend our relations with everyone regardless of the mistakes on the part of others.
15. Let us ensure that we offer Zakat ul Fitr ahead of Eid prayers so that the poor and the needy can make use of it in an appropriate manner.
9. Let us spend some time in seclusion at night praying to the Almighty. 10. Let us ensure that we will not hurt
Let us place our trust in Allah in everything that we do. May Allah accept our ibada.
Ramadan the holiest season in the Islamic faith, commemorating the revelation of the Quran to Mohammed. This month provides Muslims a time to focus on our faith and practice God's commands through fasting, prayer, self disci pline, and charity. This month we continue to remind our selves that the essence of life is love and we renew our lives, our commitment to honesty, integrity and compassion. This month we work harder to advance the freedom and mutual understanding so we can continue to carve out a better future of hope, opportunity in America. We visit our sick. We visit our veterans who bravely fought to preserve our freedoms. We remember those families whose sons and daughters never returned to the embrace of their loved ones, and those untold thousands who returned with bodies broken by injuries inflicted on the battle fields of Korea, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. We remind ourselves that freedom is not free. Turkish Muslim communities have and continue to vehemently, emphatically condemn terrorists! We must be careful not to associate Hate Merchant Terrorists with the majority of the peaceful people of Islam. Islam is a peaceful religion. Quran tells us we share a common humanity and dignity. Quran, the Bible, and the Torah call on believers to love one's neighbors and to welcome strangers. Turkish Americans, we remain committed to welcoming individuals of the Christian and Jewish religions with love and as brothers. A crime perpetrated in the name of religion is the greatest crime against religion. We will continue to write history in creating a brighter future of hope and opportunity and love. From the Ottoman Empire until today, Muslim democratic NATO ally Turkey, was and is what New York city is today—a part of the Turkish community. I will continue to work to share our heritage, love and unity with America, the greatest country in the world. I wish all of our Muslim brothers a blessed celebration of Ramadan. I wish our Jewish and Christian brothers, peace, health, and prosperity in the years ahead.

2015 Turkish Elections and Impact on US-Turkish Relations “Turkey’s elections reaffirmed its status as a strong, vibrant democracy in a region where turmoil is the norm. The peaceful, fair elections even outdid the United States. As parties negotiate a potential coalition government there will be plenty of changes”
By Ali Cinar Communty Lider EVP-Turkish Heritage Organization
Let's look at the situation with the U.S.-Turkish relationship.
Let's look at some facts: · The turnout at the elections was 86.47 %. · Voting abroad in 54 countries - 112 Turkish Missions (Embassies and Consulates) and customs facilities (airports, border gates, ports) - began on 8 May and ended on 31 May. · Of all the votes casted abroad, AKP obtained 49.88%, while HDP obtained 20.29%, CHP 17.21% and MHP 9.25%. · 17,804 (22.5%) of the 90,745 registered electorates in the U.S. participated in the elections (the participation rate was 11.8% in the 2014 presidential elections.) and 44.32% casted their votes for CHP, 24.05% casted for HDP, 16.41% for AKP and 9.07% for MHP. · Turkey’s Yazidi (Ali Atalan and Feleknas Uca, HDP) and Roma (Ozcan Purcu, CHP) communities will be represented in the Parliament for the first time. · Other freshly elected MPs include 3 citizens of Armenian descent (Markar Esayan, AKP, Selina Dogan, CHP and Garo Paylan, HDP), 1 citizen of Syriac descent (Erol Dora, HDP) and a significant number of Alevi citizens, as well as a record number of women. · A total of 96 women MPs (18%) secured seats in the Parliament (AKP 41, HDP 31, CHP 20, MHP 4). The figure marks a notable rise compared to the 2011 parliamentary election, when 79 women were elected to Parliament. · As no political party managed to secure the majority of the seats in the Parliament (276), there will be a period of negotiation to decide the next steps in forming a government - a coalition government, a minority government or snap elections under the care of an interim government.
Turkey and the United States do more than $19 billion in trade each year, and more than 1,200 U.S. companies operate in Turkey. A member of NATO since 1952, Turkey is also home to the NATO Center of Excellence-Defense Against Terrorism and has hosted a U.S. military base at Izmir for over 50 years. This partnership remains critical to both countries. As the rise of ISIS and the Syrian civil war continue on Turkey’s doorstep, the U.S. has proven to be a valuable ally. Turkey and the U.S. have some intelligence sharing going on, however it is not sufficient. Therefore Turkish and U.S. officials are meeting more often in order to be successful in the Region. But more can and should be done by the U.S. and its allies. Turkey cannot bear the responsibility for ending this crisis on its own. After four years of civil war, a comprehensive, international plan is needed to end this conflict and rebuild Syria. We know one thing. Syria isn't the old Syria; it has been changed and will be changed more dramatically. Let's keep in mind that Turkey is hosting over 2 million refugees at a cost of 6 billion dollars. Nobody knows what will happen with refugees in the future but everybody knows that this is getting very harmful for Turkey from economical, social-cultural and national security perspectives. With no end to this crisis in sight, Turkey cannot support these refugees indefinitely. The government needs to find ways to work with the U.S. and the EU to continue to provide these refugees with the support and services they need. There will certainly be a learning curve as Turkey’s new parliament begins working together, and more Turkey-U.S. joint partnership is needed in many ways. The new government should seize this opportunity to reassess its goals in the region and to work with the U.S. to address them. Turkish Americans are very sensitive on our National Issues. If HDP starts to make wrong statements in the Turkish Parliament, we will not be quiet. If we remember the Gallipoli War, Turkish, Kurdish and Cerkez -ALL - were united for one nation and one land. So HDP should remember the past and act like a party not a spokesperson of terrorist leader Ocalan.
Turks Elected Their Parlamenters
Savas Sahin President of Turkish-American United Coalition and NY Giresunlular Organization
“We left behind our country’s 2015 parliamentary elections, which is very important in the strategic sense: our nation is getting better. Every single political party had a Turkish flag at the the voting for Turkey’s development except for the anti-nationalist party called the Peoples’ Democratic Party (Also translated in Turkish: Halklarin Demokratik Partisi, HDP). Thus, it has exceeded the threshold of 10% of the votes in Turkey. This threshold was not exceeded with the votes of the Southeast only, but votes from all over Turkey. If this continues, it’ll lead to the turkification of HDP and also lead to a different situation that no one wants. Turkey has to protect itself against any danger, and should take rough measures against separatism. The fact that all the poll votes of the Southeast are going towards HDP and that there is no deception found in these votes, indicates the size of the threat and intimidation. At the same time it shows that the government has no type of effect on that area. As soon as possible, the government needs to have an impact everywhere.”
A
lthough not by a lot, the Nationalist Movement Party (Milliyetci Hareket Partisi, MHP,) has been able to increase their votes. In fact, this increase in votes was not a success for the National Movement Party being that they're one of the opposition political parties, but they were able to increase their votes. Thus, it is important in terms of MHP becoming a coalition party. The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) stated that in no shape or form will it have coalition with the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) which could either lead to eliminating a government without the Justice and Development Party (AKP) or increasing the possibility of re-election. Let us talk about the Republican People's Party (CHP) that has been the main opposition party for decades, which I have a hard time understanding. Turkey's biggest misfortune is actually the absence of opposition. It is great misfortune for Turkey that the main opposition didn't produce a small project for the people. Actually, no political party except for the Justice and Development Party has the capacity to create a project in Turkey. The Republican People's Party (CHP) leader, Kilicdaroglu, stated
that twice every year he will double the retirement salary, which our people realized was a bribery technique, so they haven't turned towards the Republican People's Party (CHP). The main goal of this party was to help the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) exceed its borders, and to wait for something from the Republican People's Party (CHP) would be very wrong. All the parties that managed to enter the parliament, except the Justice and Development Party (AKP), find themselves successful. Their success was blocking the Justice and Development Party (AKP) from reaching as many of the votes as last time. The Justice and Development Party (AKP) received the same amount of votes as the 2nd and 3rd parties combined in the parliament. The fact that the 2nd and 3rd place parties see this as success is impossible to understand. The winner of the election is mathematically indisputably, the Justice and Development Party (AKP). The Justice and Development Party (AKP), being in power for 13 years, has received 41% of the votes in Turkey becoming the winner out of 30 different parties. This means before the
year 2002 our citizens haven't forgotten Turkey. Despite all the inside and outside outbreaks with extreme opposing attacks, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) was able to win with 41% of the votes, meaning that the Party had a deep connection to the citizens of Turkey. In fact, the public supports the Justice and Development Party (AKP), but they say to be aware of some officials. If the Justice and Development Party (AKP) read this message, good. The first early election the Turkish people will carry the political party to power again. But if the Justice and Development Party (AKP) misread this message then they will continue to lose votes, and I do not think it would be good for Turkey. If we put the important election results as an article, I think it will be understood better.
Conclusion 1. Being that the election turn out was around 87% showed how significant democracy is in Turkey. This is gratifying. 2. Turkey was forced to go back to the nightmare coalition from 13 years ago. 3. In Turkey, the loss of 3-4 vote points of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in its bad days has more attention than the opposition gaining more votes. 4. Even if the Justice and Development Party (AKP) cannot govern alone, it has been elected first for 13 years straight. 5. Everything based on ethnic racism is illegal even in politics. This community is concerned about its future. This needs to stop in Turkey. 6. Investments concerning the future and initiative process are hampered (to stop the movement of) endangering Turkey. Investments must continue. 7. The main opposition party was surprised by the amount of people providing support for the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP). They said they will eliminate religion again and that they are backed by an illegal organization. That this organization itself is supported by a significant segment of religious support is very thought provoking. 8. We have to respect the nation’s will. Praise be to Allah (god) that we were able to become a great nation. 9. If the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) is turkified, in favor of unity and solidarity, and end its ethnic racism then they will have an important place in Turkey’s politics. This situation is positive. If the opposite happens then these citizens will end the party. 10. There are options to create parliamentary coalition. I think the most supported coalition would be the Justice and Development (AKP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) coalition. 11. If there is no government from this, the system will transfer itself to the people again. In other words, another election. This won’t be early election, it’ll be a re-election, meaning an election redo. 12. The Justice and Development Party (AKP) is not alone in power, to be welcomed by some sectors even outside is very thought provoking. Yours sincerely

The Effect of Stress on Your Body
H
ow we react to stressful situations may play a key role in our long-term health, new research suggests.
In a study measuring adults’ reactions to stress and how it affects their bodies, researchers found that adults who fail to maintain positive moods such as cheerfulness or calm when faced with the minor stressors of everyday life appear to have elevated levels of inflammation. In addition, women can be at heightened risk. Inflammatory responses are part of the body’s ability to protect itself via the immune system. However, chronic—long-term—inflammation can undermine health, and appears to play a role in obesity, heart disease and cancer. These findings add to a growing body of evidence regarding the health implications of affective reactivity—emotional response—to daily stressors. The researchers reported their results in a recent edition of Health Psychology. DAILY STRESSORS Nancy Sin, postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Healthy Aging and Department of Biobehavioral Health at Penn State and her colleagues showed that the frequency of daily stressors, in and of itself, was less consequential for inflammation than how an individual reacted to those stressors. “A person’s frequency of stress may be less related to inflammation than responses to stress,” says Sin. “It is how a person reacts to stress that is important.” Sin’s findings also highlight the important—but often discounted—contributions of positive affect in naturalistic stress processes. “Positive emotions, and how they can help people in the event of stress, have really been overlooked,” Sin says. In the short-term, with illness or exercise, the body experiences a high immune response to help repair itself. However, in the long term, heightened inflammatory immune responses may not be healthy. Individuals who have trouble regulating their responses may be at risk for certain age-related conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, frailty and cognitive decline, Sin says.
“To our knowledge, this paper is the first to link biomarkers of inflammation with positive mood responses to stressors in everyday life,” says Jennifer E. Graham-Engeland, associate professor of biobehavioral health at Penn State. EIGHT DAYS OF EMOTIONS A cross-sectional sample of 872 adults from the National Study of Daily Experiences reported daily stressors and emotional reactions for eight consecutive days. Blood samples of participants were obtained during a separate clinic visit and assayed for inflammatory markers. Subjects were interviewed by phone every day for eight consecutive days. They were asked to rate their positive and negative emotions, as well as whether or not they encountered stressors. This enabled researchers to evaluate a person’s emotional response on days when they experience stressors, and compare it to days when they do not. “We calculated reactivity scores to see how participants generally reacted to stressors,” Sin says. “Then we used it to predict two markers of inflammation.” The researchers used several different types of stressors. Among them were arguments and avoiding arguments at work, school or home; being discriminated against; a network stressor, i.e., a stressful event that happens to someone close to the subject; and other stressors. “We examined both positive and negative affective reactions to stress and compared the effects of stress exposure with responses to stressors,” Graham-Engeland says. “Little is known about the potential role of daily stress processes on inflammation. Much of the relevant past research with humans has focused on either chronic stress or acute laboratory-based stress—methods that do not fully capture how people respond to naturalistic stressors in the context of daily life.” Data came from the second wave of the Midlife in the United States Study, a national survey designed to investigate health and well-being in midlife and older adulthood. Its goal is to expand understanding of how daily mood and stressful events may relate to inflammation and health. Additional authors of the study include David M. Almeida, professor of human development and family studies at Penn State, and Anthony D. Ong, associate professor of human development at Cornell University.

A Brief Outline of Turkish History
T
he history of the Turks covers a time frame of more than 4,000 years. Turks first lived in Central Asia around 2,000 BC. Later, some of them left Central Asia and spread around, establishing many states and empires independent from each other within a vast area of Asia and Europe. These empires included The Great Hun Empire (established during the 3rd Century B.C.), the Göktürk Empire (552- 740), the Uygur Empire (741- 840), the Avar Empire (6-9 Century A.D.), the Hazar Empire (5-10 Century A.D), the Great Seljuk Empire (1040- 1157), and many others. Turks in Anatolia: The Turks started to settle in Anatolia in the early 11th century by way of continual migrations and incursions. The Malazgirt victory in 1071 against the Byzantines literally opened up the gates of Anatolia to the Turks. It is following this date that the Turks fully conquered the whole of Anatolia and established the Anatolian Seljuk State there (1080-1308).This was the first Turkish State in Anatolia and was sometimes called, after its capital city of many years, the Konya Sultanate. OTTOMAN AGE 1299–1923: The Seljuk State rapidly declined with the Mongol invasion of Anatolia which started in 1243. During the period of the decline of the Anatolian Seljuk state and after its disappear-
ance, many Turcoman principalities were established in Anatolia towards the end of the thirteenth century. One of these was the Ottoman (in Turkish Osmanli) Beylik (similar to a Principality) named after its founder, a Turkish ruler named Osman in 1299 in the environs of Söğüt in Eskişehir in the northwestern corner of the peninsula. The Ottoman Beylik rapidly expanded throughout the fourteenth century and thus arose the Ottoman Empire, which ruled over a vast territory on three continents and lasted for 623 years until the end of the First World War. The Ottomans captured Constantinople in 1453, during the reign of Sultan Mehmet II (1451-1481), and the Byzantine Empire fell, which also marked the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the New Age. During the reign of Sultan Mehmet II, who assumed the title of “The Conqueror,” the Ottoman state entered into an era of rapid development which would last until the end of the sixteenth century. At its height, the Ottomans ruled over what is today Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Albania and Romania in the Balkans, over all the islands in the Eastern Mediterranean, and over what is today the Middle East. The borders of the Empire extended from the Crimea in the North to Yemen and Sudan in the South and from Iran and the Caspian Sea in the East to Vienna in the Northwest and Spain in the

Southwest. Starting in the 16th century, however, the Ottoman Empire incrementally lost its economic and military superiority in comparison to Europe, which had developed rapidly with the Renaissance, with its conquest of new territories and its access to raw materials, and with the Industrial Revolution. The Ottoman Empire failed to adapt to these new developments. Thus, the balance of power shifted in favor of the European States. The nationalist movements that started in the nineteenth century and the self-determination movements and rebellions of the Balkan nations, supported by the European powers and Russia, slowly brought the Ottoman Empire to a decline. WORLD WAR I 1914 –1918: The weakening of the Empire continued until World War I. The Ottoman Empire entered the First World War in 1914 on the side of the allied powers and emerged defeated from the war in 1918, compelled to sign the Mondros Armistice on October 30, 1918. Under the terms of this Armistice, the territories of the Ottoman Empire were occupied by Britain, France, Russia, and Greece. This was the actual end of the Ottoman Empire. A national resistance and liberation move-
ment emerged as a reaction to this occupation under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal, an Ottoman military commander who mobilized Anatolia on a quest for Turkish self-determination and national independence. He united sporadic and disorganized resistance groups in Anatolia and organized them into a structured army. Under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal—later given the last name Ataturk or “Father of Turks”—the resistance became cohesive, and the Turks were capable of fighting the war for national liberation. The Turkish National Liberation War was an effort to create a new state from the ruins of an Empire, which had completed its life. It lasted four years (1919-1922) wherein a small army of volunteers fought and won a war against the leading powers of this time. Ataturk’s victory was not only military, but it was also diplomatic. The Turkish military victory was sealed with a diplomatic success with the signing of the Lausanne Peace Treaty on July 24, 1923. Signed with Great Britain, France, Greece, Italy and others, the Treaty recognized the creation and international borders of a Turkish State and guaranteed its complete independence. REPUBLIC OF TURKEY: The Republic was proclaimed on October 29, 1923. For the first time in centuries, the Turkish people enjoyed self-rule. Mustafa Kemal was
Happy Ramadan
elected as the first president of the Republic of Turkey. As president for 15 years, until his death in 1938, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk introduced a broad range of reforms in the political, social, legal, economic, and cultural spheres that were virtually unparalleled in any other country. The first Grand National Assembly under the leadership of Ataturk created a new political and legal system based on the principles of parliamentary democracy, human rights, national sovereignty and division of powers, private ownership and secularism, and the separation of religion and state affairs. A new, secular education system was established, the Arabic alphabet was changed into the Latin alphabet, and new civil and criminal codes were adapted from European models. Turkish women received equal rights under the law such as the right to vote and be elected to public office, which put Turkey ahead of many Western nations in terms of women’s rights. It was a revolution, unparalleled at its time and even today, to bring a predominantly Muslim nation in line with Western civilization and universal values.

Albania is The Biggest Secret in European Tourism and Only Muslim Country in Europe
A
lbania is a small, mountainous country in the Balkan peninsula, with a long Adriatic and Ionian coastline. Albania is one of the most interesting countries I’ve come across in a long time. To say it is unique is not enough and it is the place to go if you are looking for a real European adventure. Albania has a pretty interesting history, and you would be doing yourself a disservice by not reading up on it a bit before you go. It will help you understand that you are headed to a country that was totally isolated from the rest of the world for the latter half of the 20th century because of a communist dictator. After World War II, Albania became a Stalinist state under Enver Hoxha, and remained staunchly isolationist until its transition to democracy after 1990. The 1992 elections ended 47 years of communist rule, but the latter half of the decade saw a quick turnover of presidents and prime ministers. Albania is the only Muslim country in Europe. Islam came to Albania through the Ottoman Empire in the 14th century. According to the 2011 census, 58.79% of Albania's population adheres to Islam, making it the largest religion in the country. Christianity is practiced by 16.99% of the population, making it the 2nd largest religion in the country. During the Ottoman rule of Albania, the majority of Albanians converted to the Muslim affiliation. However, decades of state atheism, which ended in 1991, brought a decline in religious
Gönül Yalçın practice in all traditions. Albania won its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912.
geography also kept us intrigued as it varied from rolling green forests to towering grey cliff walls.
After learning this information about Albania, all the amazing scenery, lifestyle, mountains, roads, old buses, mosques and churces become more significant and meaningful.
My next destination was Valbona, a small village up in the Albanian Alps. From the ferry it is only a short drive along the newly paved road that follows the stunning turquoise blue Valbona River. Valbona Valley National Park was designated in 1996 and is referred to as the "Gem of Albania." Perhaps the most famous activity in the region is the day hike from Valbona to Theth. There are lots of other options for hiking as well that make it very easy to get a taste of local life while still returning to your hotel for a hot shower at night. I stayed at the highly rated Rilindja Hotel and found it lived up to all of our expectations and more. Even if you don't want to be active this is the perfect place to just relax and enjoy the views. Since the location is so isolated you'll also have to eat where you stay. That wasn't a problem for me as the food at Rilindja Hotel was outstanding. Be sure to try the local fish, goat, and lamb!
If you're researching a trip to Albania these days you're sure to read about the Lake Koman Ferry, which is described as "one of the world's greatest boat trips" by Bradt Travel guides. The views are some of the best outside of Scandinavia, and if you want to explore the Albanian Alps there is no better way to get there. Lake Koman was created in 1985 after the Koman Hydroelectric Power Station was built on the Drin River. You can choose to ride with locals making their way home or take a guided tour. During the trip I saw a few local families coming down from their homes in the mountains to meet loved ones or pickup deliveries. It was a great small glimpse into a way of life that hasn't changed much in decades. The
In the south it is hard to miss Gjirokaster with its imposing castle. The town is recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage List, along with Berat to the north, as "a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town." The five centuries of Ottoman rule were obvious everywhere I looked. Gjirokaster Castle has been built up in various forms since before the 12th century. It offered spectacular views back over the city and all of its Ottoman architecture. Whether you only visit for a few hours or spend the night, Gjirokaster is definitely a fascinating and beautiful part of Albanian history that you shouldn't miss. The southern coast of Albania has beaches to rival its neighbor Greece backed by impressive mountains making for a really beautiful setting. The biggest town in the south is Saranda, but I found a quieter spot nearby in Ksamil. You won't find long sandy stretches of beach to stroll here but you will find gorgeous views looking across to the Greek Island of Corfu and smaller islands close enough to swim to. The Greek influence is strong here, and you'll definitely see it on the menu of the local eateries. Of course there is also seafood that shouldn't be missed. Ksamil was the perfect place to relax under the sun and indulge in some great cheap food and drinks.
