Poole Town Ladies’ former manager has his final say on the season ahead

K E E N’ S QUOTES

I

hat a season we had last year - unchartered land for the club; management and most of the players. Not knowing what to expect heightened the excitement and the nerves. Things went better than expected. That win on the opening day away at Maidenhead was possibly one of the proudest moments I’ve had in coaching! To finish fifth was a great achievement. There were one or two hiccups along the way but that is always to be expected. The way we played against Crystal Palace and then against Plymouth are also personal highlights.

t’s with a heavy heart that I step away from the hands-on side this season as I focus on our overall strategy (some exciting things to come) but the time seems right. There have been a few changes to the playing and coaching staff and I believe how we handle ourselves in times of change is how we can judge ourselves going forward. Who are the leaders in the squad and who wants to take the easy way out? Those that take an easier route don’t always get to where they thought they were going. So now is the time to knuckle down, stay focused and calm. There were tough games before and there will be tough games again but remember how you got through them and apply the knowledge and that is true progress. The types of players we need at this club are the types of players who can handle the pressure; the pressure of only being allowed three substitutes, the pressure of crowds, the pressure of results and Wright ups being published and promoted across the country as #WeaAreNational. All that on top of being able to play a bit as well. My maiden column is also likely to be my final one, which is a shame for me as most of you know I often have something to say. This space will now become somewhere for Steve (the manager not the press chap) to share his thoughts on how this new season is progressing. So welcome Steve and Tomas to the first team and a warm welcome to Chris and Eloi who will support Shane with the development squad. Good luck to them and every player this season. Enjoy it. 4

The new players are settling in really well. We’re all fully focused on improving on the incredible season we had last year!

Poole Town Ladies’ skipper Becca Witherington on how The Dolphins can avoid second season syndrome in the league.

T

he summer ahead of the forthcoming season has seen lots of changes take place for Poole Town Ladies, including new management and new players joining the club. It’s great to see the new faces settling in so well and everyone seems fully focused on trying to maintain and improve on the incredible season we had last year, finishing fifth in our debut season in the division. We didn’t know what to expect last season as we were a newly promoted side, but this year we know just how good the league is and just how hard we will have to work to progress further with the club. Whether we win, lose or draw we are constantly learning. The ambition is big at Poole Town Ladies and I know I can speak for all the girls when I say we can’t wait for the season to get up and running! 5

Poole Town Ladies’ captain Becca Witherington talks opening day defeat, a summer of change and... swinging through the trees? Portrait Nadia Lonnen Words and interview Stephen Wright 6

Hi Becca, we opened our campaign last week with a disappointing 8-1 defeat to Southampton Women’s. What was your initial reaction to that? It was a massive learning curve, especially for the new staff and players, but it was a good stepping stone for us. I think it was a good way to start the season in the sense that it will only get better. Credit where credit’s due, they were a really good team, well drilled and they played very well.

They were a tough team to play against. We’ve got to learn from our mistakes from last week. The work rate was there so we need to make sure we keep that and go out there with our heads up against Larkhall. They’re a good team but hopefully we’ll be able to bag three points. What has your role been as captain in terms of helping the new players settle in?

Just getting them to know everyone, making sure they’re okay. We’ve There have been plenty of changes already got a couple of social to the squad and management over activities lined up so everyone can the summer. With that in mind, what join in and get to know each other should our target be for this season? for a bit of team building. As you say, there have been a lot of changes. We’ve got to try to maintain what we did last season, finishing fifth in the league, or best case scenario improve on that position.

So a trip to Nando’s is on the cards?

Haha! We’re actually hoping to go to Go Ape! Chris Berry, one of our Development Coaches said about going to watch one of the Yeovil Ladies Larkhall Athletic are our opponents games as well so hopefully there will this Sunday. What can you remember be a few of us there! We want to from the last time we met? make it easy for everyone to fit in.

LARKHALL ATHLETIC Q&A

Last time out

with Larkhall Athletic Head Coach Simon Mockford Hi Simon, as Head Coach of Larkhall Athletic since February, what can you recall of the previous meeting between these two sides? With all due respect, I felt that we were the better side but lost 1-0 the last time we played Poole Town. It’s hard to take when you have games where you play so well and don’t get what you deserve. You beat Chesham United 4-0 on the opening weekend. Tell us a bit about that. They are a newly promoted side but they are a good team and we were without some key players so under the circumstances it felt like a good result. We’ve started this season well and hope to continue that this weekend, but we do have a few players missing as it’s that time of year. I’m confident we’re good enough to be one of the teams that finishes higher up in the league come the end of the season. Thank you for your time, we look forward to welcoming you and your team on Sunday!

In a tight contest, Dolphins snatched a 1-0 win at Plain Ham back in April to better their chances of a top five finish in the league. A controversially awarded penalty was missed by Larkhall, before Maisy Smith’s goal on the 81st minute brought three points back to Dorset.

8 1 MATCHREPORT

Goal: Agombar

Poole Town Ladies opened their campaign with a disappointing away defeat to a strong Southampton Women’s side last Sunday. The home side came firing out the blocks, dominating posession and not allowing Poole to create anything going forward. With a half time score of 4-0 to Southampton, it was a tall order for Poole to get anything from the game. After an unfortunate own goal made it 5-0 to the hosts, Poole held their own for their best 20-minute spell of the game, hinting at what they can be capable of going forward, but never quite getting a shot away. Goalkeeper Sam Chrippes was forced to play through injury in the latter stages, and after Jane Yeates made it six, Dolphins immediately went up the other end and got one back through debutant Hollie Agombar’s lofted effort. Two further Southampton goals made it a day to forget for Poole. 9

The Wright Up @SWright_AFCB

I

Poole Town LFC’s Head of Media Stephen Wright invites you behind the scenes for a look at how the first issue of Dolphins was made.

’m one of those football fans who always buys the programme on Matchday. I have done for as long as I can remember, all the way back to convincing my dad to spend the money on them back when we used to watch Oxford United in the mid-2000s. Unfortunately, in 2018 – with the continuing rise of digital alternatives – the Matchday programme seems to be falling out of favour with many spectators. In an era when print is on the way out and the EFL no longer require professional clubs to produce the publications, I still believe in the benefits of having a programme. They don’t just act as souvenirs or pieces of memorabilia, but also serve as pieces of entertainment and hopefully offer some insight into the club to digest before the game or at half-time. With that said, it should come as no surprise that – when the opportunity arose to create a new programme from the ground up for Poole Town Ladies – I couldn’t resist taking it on. In all honesty, there’s not an awful lot to it. Admittedly, our programme is 12 pages so costs much less to print than most clubs’ booklets, but with a little bit of InDesign experience and a collection of programmes to take inspiration

from I was on my way. In designing Dolphins, I wanted to produce a publication for the club to be proud of, so I immediately aimed to cherry-pick all the best bits from some that I’ve picked up over the years. This column – The Wright Up – was itself inspired by a behind-the-scenes like feature run in Oxford United’s programme. I always found those stories about what happens off the pitch to be just as interesting as those that occur on it. The heaviest influence however, was Brentford’s Bees magazine. Brentford – a club I have no affiliation with besides attending one game once when I was in London – have one of the best designed publications, and is A5 too, so I could get a good grip of how ours could look. I hope that you enjoy reading this issue as much as I’ve enjoyed making it. It has been a real passion of mine and I have to thank Nadia Lonnen for her expert photography as well as DPI for printing the issue. These will of course appear at every home game this season, with only this first one being published online to hopefully encourage more locals to visit the ground! Here’s to another successful season for all connected with Poole Town Ladies FC. 10
