I told the players after the Southampton game that that side was the benchmark for us to reach.

Poole Town Ladies’ new Head Coach on the lessons learnt from opening day defeat

ast weekend we played Larkhall Ladies at home and I was looking for a response from the previous game at Southampton. We had a few players out and in different positions on that opening day but that was no excuse for our performance against a very good side who should win the league. I told the players after that game that Southampton was the benchmark for us to reach. We worked on a few issues during the week in preparation for Larkhall who gave us a tough challenge last year and I was very pleased with our performance. In poor conditions, we controlled the game from back to front, whilst dominating possession and creating scoring chances. Although not perfect yet, the signs are good as the players are buying into my philosophy and putting this into practice. Training is going well, and the intensity is increasing week by week and my focus is on what the team needs rather than reacting to the games. There are quite a few issues that we will be working on over the next few months to make us stronger as a team and harder to break down, and the players know they must put the work in as there are a lot of good teams in our league. This week we have Watford in the cup and another big challenge for us, so I’m looking for a performance from the ladies win or lose, as our main priority is the league this year after a summer of many changes. To me, cup games are good morale builders for the team and I know the ladies are looking forward to defending the Dorset cup they won last season. With great respect to Watford we won’t change our style of play and we’ll see what happens. 4

We know Watford Ladies will be strong but we need to just remember it’s a game of football. 11v11.

irstly, I wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate everyone involved in the win against Larkhall on Sunday. We knew it would be tough, especially coming from a big defeat in the opening game, but we showed huge character by playing our way and going on to win. This week’s game is a huge cup game. Last season in this cup we faced Crystal Palace Ladies, and it was a real privilege to play against a team of such quality and with such a big following of fans. This season we are drawn against another quality opposition, something I personally enjoy being part of. We know they will be strong but we need to just remember it’s a game of football. 11v11. We have to work hard, play as a team and believe we can win any game. We are really looking forward to the challenge. 5

WATFORD LADIES Q&A

with Watford Ladies Media Officer Chris Smith

Hi Chris, how’s the season going so far? We’ve had two very different games. Against Cardiff City Ladies we had a 5-2 win, couldn’t really ask for much more. The starting 11 worked and the subs made an impact. You could have asked for a clean sheet if you were being picky but it was a great start to our first game in the National League for over five years. In our second game against Loughborough Foxes Women we had our chances but they were clinical in the first half. They were 2-0 up at half-time which is always difficult to come back from. We gave it a shot late on but their goalkeeper had a good game, as did their right midfielder, so they were a decent outfit and unfortunately we lost 3-1. So this is a very new side for this season then? Yeah, of the 11 who started the first game, six were making their debuts for the club and five had also been new signings over the summer. There’s always going to be a bedding in process and I’m sure the coaches would agree there’s still stuff to work on but I’m positive for the season ahead. With that in mind, what is the objective for Watford in the league this season? I wouldn’t want to put a specific objective on it, but I think everyone’s target when they first start is to win the league. I don’t think there are many sides who would say otherwise. For some, that’s realistic, for some it’s more of a stretch but you’ve got to aim to win the league and get back into what is now the Championship. As for today’s game against Poole, what are you expecting from this tie? We know Plymouth Argyle Ladies who were in your league last season, so it’s clearly a decent standard. I don’t want to sound too cliché but anything can happen in a cup game. We’ve got to be prepared, professional and come and do a job. If the players don’t turn up, I’m sure you’re capable of causing an upset so we’ve got to ensure that doesn’t happen. 8

6 3 MATCHREPORT

Goals: Miller Nash O’Connell

Poole Town Ladies got their first win of the season in an emphatic 6-3 win on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon last weekend. The Dolphins started fast, and it was Hollie Agombar who broke the deadlock as she buried the rebound from her initial shot on the 22nd minute. She grabbed her brace 39 minutes in to increase the home side’s lead. Poole effectively put the game to bed with two more goals before halftime courtesy of Katie Marshallsay’s long-range effort and a period of smooth build-up play giving Faye Rolfe-Hawkins an open goal to tap into. Larkhall responded in the second half with a couple of goals, both from corners, via Tasha Miller and Katy-May O’Hara Nash. Any hint of a comeback was diminished late on when substitute Hannah Gould found the net twice to put Poole 6-2 up, before a consolation from Nicola O’Connell made the full-time score 6-3. 9

Getting to know... Steve Butcher Poole’s new Head Coach faces the all-important questions 1. Where do you come from? I lived in London until I was 32 and then moved down to Dorset. 2. Team you support? I’m a Chelsea boy because I grew up round there! 3. Favourite Chelsea player? Gianfranco Zola, once he retired it went to Frank Lampard. 4. Favourite music/artist? I like all the 80s stuff, so The Jam, The Specials, Madness, The Who. Some 50s, 60s, and 90s stuff like Oasis and Blur as well so I’ve got a varied taste. Favourite food? Has to be curry for me! 7. Milk before tea or tea before milk? Milk before tea! [This is incorrect] 8. Best holiday destination? It’s between Florence and the Maldives. 9. Best and worst football memories? Worst is John Terry slipping in the Champions League final, best was winning it against Bayern! 10
