Surrey Police Service Supporting Surrey Students

surrey Police Service (SPS) is committed to community policing and to being responsive to the needs of the different neighbourhoods within the boundaries of the City of Surrey. This is true for educational facilities as well. Whether they are K-12 or post secondary institutions, places of learning in Surrey are, really, communities within the community. Each comes with a specific set of challenges and advantages. That said, there is a shared formula for a successful community which involves engagement, commitment from stakeholders, and fostering an environment that allows the members to flourish.

SPS Sergeant Jag Khosa visited several communities within our community in the last month. From spending time with grade 6 and 7 students at a north Surrey elementary school to a gang presentation he delivered to university students at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Surrey Campus, the central message was the same – youth and their places of learning are important.

Sergeant Khosa joined Surrey School Trustee Gary Thind and Surrey District Parents Advisory Council Representative Rani Sanghera on Red FM on February 15 for a panel discussion concerning school and community safety. Elementary schools, secondary schools and post secondary institutions in our city are deserving of attention and support because these

small communities form part of the larger one. The health and success of these places of learning for Surrey’s youth is so important because, while the immediate impact is on the city today, the larger impact will be on our collective future tomorrow.

Improper Attention to fees

You need to understand the fees you pay when you invest as they reduce your return. Before making an investment, ask questions and evaluate the available options. For instance, two investments may carry similar risk and expected return, but one may have higher fees –all else being equal, the fees would affect your returns.

Not making optimum use of REsP as an investment account

It is a proven fact that among the asset classes, equities provide the highest longterm rate of return. An early investment into an RESP will let your stocks grow for 18 years or more.

Irregular monitoring of your account statements

To show the activity in your account and provide an update on your investments, your financial institution sends you monthly or quarterly account statements via mail or makes them available online. It’s essential that you examine your statements to confirm:

4That the investments that you have bought and sold are correct.

4The fees and commissions charged on the investment are correct.

4The amount of gain/loss of your investments.

If you find anything unclear/ incorrect, contact your financial representative immediately.

lack of information about the ways you can utilize REsP funds

You may use the RESP funds for any reasonable post-secondary education expense of your child in Canada as well as out of country (including apprenticeships). An added advantage is- the capital that you have contributed (not the grants or the money made from the grants) can be used for any purpose as per your need.

It is evident that a wisely decided appropriate amount of investment for your child’s post-secondary education will ensure the growth of funds in the best possible manner, which will be readily available when you need

them for the intended purpose.

The vibrant festival of Vaisakhi

the festival of vaisakhi is celebrated to mark the onset of spring in India. the time of vaisakhi usually signifies the end of the harvest season, and is an occasion of tremendous joy and festivity for farmers.

The celebrations are concentrated in the states of Punjab and Haryana. In other parts of India, Vaisakhi is known by diverse names – Pohela Boishakh in West Bengal, Bohag Bihu in Assam, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Pooram Vishu in Kerala and Maha Vishuva Sankranti in Odisha.

How is it celebrated?

The celebrations start with people bathing in a holy river and going to Gurudwaras, chief of which are the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the Gurudwara at Anandpur Sahib, where Khalsa was born, and Talwandi Sabo, where Guru Gobind Singh recompiled the sacred Guru Granth Sahib. After the prayers, people delve into merriment and dance and sing. The popular phrase ‘Jatta Aayi Vaisakhi’ is proclaimed loudly in neighborhoods as gleeful farmers celebrate a bountiful harvest. Sikh community also marks the beginning of the New Year on this

For Sikhs, the celebration of this holiday recalls another new beginning: the formation of the Khalsa, the special company

of the faithful to which all initiated Sikhs belong. The Khalsa was founded by the tenth Sikh guru, Gobind Singh. The initiation rite called khande di pahul, or “taking amrit,” frequently takes place on this day, the anniversary of the first initiations.

One of the main events on Vaisakhi is the raising of the Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag. The huge flagpole must be unbolted and lowered as scores of men and women support its weight, and others sing shabads. The flagpole is then washed and the new flag is installed. The wrapping cloth of the flag extends down to the base of the platform, and is fastened with ties of the same orange color as the flag. The new Nishan Sahib is raised as people shout the Sikh slogan “Jo Bole so Nihal,” “Who says this will be exalted!” Each is an swered with the affirma-

tion of what it is that needs to be said: “Sat Sri Akal!” or “God is Truth!” In all, Vaisakhi is a joyful and festive occasion.

Feasts are an integral part of the festival and the traditional Karah Prasad (a semolina concoction prepared with wheat, clarified butter and sugar) is a special delicacy. People congregate for lunch at the guru-ka-langar or community kitchen at the Gurudwaras and after a shared meal, take out grand processions

of Nagar Kirtan, in which devotional songs are played, led by five Khalsas dressed as Panj Pyare, pass across the streets in the wee hours of the morning. Devotees also visit the Gurudwaras to offer their prayers and seek blessings. Several fairs are also organized where festivities are observed with Bhangra and Gidda performances, folk songs, amusement rides and delicious food.

Power dressing can amplify success

Did you know that your clothes have a way of communication before you initiate a conversation with anyone?

To create an impeccable presence that leaves its impact wherever you go, samira shares tips that will help you demonstrate the power outlined:

Always opt for a tailored fit: Purchasing clothes off the rack or buying ready-made garments may be easy and less time-consuming but they are not made to fit the size and shape of your body. They are made on standard scales and sizes which may not flatter your body. Instead, choose to get your clothes tailored to your size and body shape. Additional tip: Good quality fabric and inner lining add to your power.

Colours: Colours play a vital role in

sending messages! They create a subconscious effect on the viewer. Ever wondered why bankers always wear blues? Because blue is the colour of trust!

Different colours convey different significance, for example, navy blue is the colour of trust and integrityYou can choose to wear navy blue suits or power blue shirts under your darker-coloured suits.

Black is the colour of authority, power and grace - Choose it sparingly, especially in places you want to create ‘that’ impact Charcoal grey is the colour of strength, character and efficiency - This is a good option for team vision meetings, conveying

difficult messages and even everyday office wear. Additional tip: The rule of shirts for men and tops for ladies in any professional setting is to wear pastel shades such as soft pink, powder blue, lemon yellow and the like because the lighter the colour, the more formal it be-

A solid structured bag can also add to the look. Additional tip: Match your belt and shoes in colour and texture (ie. A brown leather belt should be paired with the same brown leather laced shoes).

You may wear a power suit and still not be able to convey power! This is because power is a function of the mind, if you don’t feel it, you cannot demonstrate it. Hence, it’s vital to seek help or create awareness of the

How to nail the ‘no-makeup’ look

There has been a sudden change in people’s preferences, and no makeup is now the go-to option for both special occasions and everyday makeup routines. You may be familiar with the “clean” makeup style or have heard it referred to as a “natural” appearance. It doesn’t matter; everyone wants a piece of the new, low-maintenance mindset that is pervasive and in vogue. Here are some pointers to help you create a flawless, natural, minimal makeup appearance.

Hydrate, hydrate & hydrate: The ‘no-makeup’ makeup look is all about the healthy and natural look. Hence, you need to make sure your skin is thoroughly moisturized, looks bouncy, and doesn’t have any dry patches before starting off with your makeup. The more hydrated and healthier your skin is, the better this makeup look will turn out to be. If your skin is not hydrated properly, it will make your makeup look cakey and dry. Drink water in proper quantity and apply a good amount of moisture that suits your skin.

Follow a proper skin care process: Flawless makeup starts with a good skincare routine, and the same goes for no-makeup makeup. Hence to nail a no-makeup makeup look, you need to have a strong skincare routine. After you are done cleansing, toning, and moisturizing your skin, go in with a blurring primer to visibly reduce large pores and get a smooth and even base. Depending on your skin type, pick between a dewy or mattifying primer and give your skin a soft and smooth look. Double cleansing is a very ideal process. Having a good regimen will keep your skin looking healthy without needing to add too much makeup.

Go easy on foundation: This part is all about personal preference. The key to perfecting a natural-looking makeup look is to have the least amount of coverage so that your real hydrated skin shines through. For a simple no-makeup makeup look, we recommend skipping the foundation. If you still want to add a light layer of face makeup, look for a no-makeup makeup foundation that has a sheer to light coverage and matches your undertone and skin tone correctly.

Use cream based or water based formulas: Use cream based or water based formulas like cream based or water-based blush, highlighters, lip tints, cheek tint, eyeshadow, mascara etc. They are ideal to give you a natural finish, as they melt into your skin and sink right in, unlike powder formulations. This will make your makeup look more natural and effortless.

Conceal correctly: Just like foundation, concealer isn’t always critical for this look. If you want to cover up

your dark spots or dark circles (letting them go uncovered is also absolutely fine), opt for a lightweight hydrating concealer and apply only where required. Try not to go overboard with it. The trick to a flawless no-makeup makeup is using a concealer to strategically cover up blemishes and brighten up your complexion. Blend it with your fingers for a natural effect.

Brush up your brows: Do not ignore your eyebrows as they play a very important role in making your face look put together. Comb your brows, plug in some extra hair growth, fill them lightly and apply transparent mascara so that they stay in place for a long time.

Shave your face before makeup: Shaving your face removes hair, debris, excess oil, and dead skin cells, which can brighten the look of skin. This helps makeup go on smoothly and last longer. This is the most underrated but most effective process that one can do to achieve flawless skin.

The goal of minimal makeup is to achieve a natural, carefree look that brings out your best characteristics. It is a classic design that is always in vogue.

these days, a lot of us opt for a minimal makeup look rather than wearing full-on makeup, and the style is becoming increasingly popular among younger people.

Celiac disease, is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. If you have celiac disease, eating gluten triggers an immune response in your small intestine. Over time, this reaction damages your small intestine’s lining and prevents it from absorbing some nutrients. The intestinal damage often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating and anemia, and can lead to serious complications.

There’s no cure for celiac disease — but for most people, following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.

symptoms

The signs and symptoms of celiac disease can vary greatly and differ in children and adults. Digestive signs and symptoms for adults include:

4Diarrhea

4Fatigue

4Weight loss

4Bloating and gas

4Abdominal pain

4Nausea and vomiting

4Constipation

However, more than half the adults with celiac disease have signs and symptoms unrelated to the digestive system, including:

4Anemia, usually from iron deficiency

4Loss of bone density (osteoporosis) or softening of bone (osteomalacia)

4Itchy, blistery skin rash (dermatitis herpetiformis)

4Mouth ulcers

4Headaches and fatigue

4Nervous system injury, including numbness and tingling in the feet and hands, possible problems with balance, and cognitive impairment

4Joint pain

4Reduced functioning of the spleen (hyposplenism)

Children

Children with celiac disease are more likely than adults to have digestive problems,

All you need to know about celiac disease

including:

4Nausea and vomiting

4Chronic diarrhea

4Swollen belly

4Constipation

4Gas

4Pale, foul-smelling stools

The inability to absorb nutrients might result in:

4Failure to thrive for infants

4Damage to tooth enamel

4Weight loss

4Anemia

4Irritability

4Short stature

4Delayed puberty

4Neurological symptoms, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, headaches, lack of muscle coordination and seizures

Causes

Your genes combined with eating foods with gluten and other factors can contribute to celiac disease, but the precise cause isn’t known. Infant-feeding practices, gastrointestinal infections and gut bacteria might contribute, as well. Sometimes celiac disease becomes active after surgery, pregnancy, childbirth, viral infection or severe emotional stress.

When the body’s immune system overreacts to gluten in food, the reaction damages the tiny, hairlike projections (villi) that line the small intestine. Villi absorb vitamins, minerals and other nutrients from the food you eat. If your villi are damaged, you can’t get enough nutrients, no matter how much you eat.

Risk factors

Celiac disease tends to be more common in people who have:

4A family member with celiac disease or dermatitis herpetiformis

4Type 1 diabetes

4Down syndrome or Turner syndrome

4Autoimmune thyroid disease

4Microscopic colitis (lymphocytic or collagenous colitis)

4Addison’s disease

4Complications

Untreated, celiac disease can cause:

Malnutrition: This occurs if your small intestine can’t absorb enough nutrients. Malnutrition can lead to anemia and weight loss. In children, malnutrition can cause slow growth and short stature.

Bone weakening: Malabsorption of calcium and vitamin D can lead to a softening of the bone (osteomalacia or rickets) in children and a loss of bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) in adults.

Infertility and miscarriage: Malabsorption of calcium and vitamin D can contribute to reproductive issues.

lactose intolerance: Damage to your small intestine might cause you abdominal pain and diarrhea after eating or drinking dairy products that contain lactose. Once your intestine has healed, you might be able to tolerate dairy products again.

ing the midnight oil, there’s plenty of free time with nothing to do.

Summer vacation is the perfect time to be more laidback, catch up on some much-needed sleep, hobbies and reading. It’s also great to get together with friends and go on trips to popular holiday destinations.

2. Trips to the beach

A trip to the beach is one of the best things to do in summer. Be it playing around in the warm waters of the sea, building sand castles, enjoying long walks barefoot on the sand or simply lying down on the sand and reading a book, beaches have something to offer to almost everyone. Summers and beaches are a perfect combination to let go, relax and enjoy the summer warmth.

3. More time outdoors

From going on picnics and having barbeques to going fishing, summer is the best season to spend more time outdoors. Picnics are the perfect way of catching up with friends and family while the smell of burgers, steaks and hot dogs is one

of the best summer experiences. It’s also the best time to gorge on food as eventually, you’ll burn it all off with the activities that you might take up.

The weather is warm enough to go on hikes, bike rides, to camp outdoors and pursue various sports like basketball, football, volleyball and any other sport that’s a passion of yours.

4. simpler dressing (and packing) options

Flip flops, shorts, sundresses and loose cotton shirts are the ultimate comfort clothing. You’re no longer weighed down by heavy winter clothes or layers. Without the several layers of clothing required to keep yourself warm, getting ready doesn’t take forever. Same goes for packing to go to holiday destinations -- it’s simpler and lighter.

5. Cold drinks and ice creams

Enjoying an ice-cold drink such as lemonade or delicious ice cream on a hot summer day is one of the simplest yet greatest pleasures of summer. From

smoothies, fresh fruit juices to ice creams, there’s no dearth to the amount of soothing and cooling stuff that you can have in summers. It’s heavenly. From nature to people, everywhere you see bright pops of color, which instantly lifts spirits and makes life seem a lot less complicated. Long and bright sunny days simply can’t be beaten and have plenty of options to cheer up almost everyone.

It’s also the time of the year that we spend most of our time outdoors -- automatically making us healthier and more active. These are all absolutely wonderful reasons why we love summer.

Women above 30 must consider these health tests

We have all heard that “age doesn’t matter if your heart is full of life,” while it may be true in some sense, one needs to be attentive about their age and address the complexities it brings into life. As women move to their 30’s, the body instantly starts experiencing the turbulence of hormonal changes. They become more susceptible to a multitude of diseases waiting at this stretch of the age-group.

In order to stay healthy and avoid the varied form of diseases, women above 30 years of age must undergo the following tests:

Heart screening through blood tests: Your heart can skip a beat and you might not even get to know it. Many times women tend to experience racing heartbeats, chronic fatigue and high levels of anxiety but ignore all the symptoms of cardiovascular problems very easily. Most of the time they assume that a heavy workload is causing this trouble. Little do they know that these can be the warning signs about their heart condition. What to do then? Simple. Start with the basics. Book your blood tests either via online diagnostic platforms or simply from the one near you. These tests must include an hs-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) test along with blood pressure, cholesterol tests, blood glucose tests, and BMI measurements to check obesity. The hs-CRP tests indicate the risk of heart attack by measuring C-reactive protein which is a marker of inflammation or infection associated with heart issues.

Regular Diabetes screening: Diabetes is a major concern for populations worldwide. Since diabetes can cause major health complications among women such as kidney issues, cardiovascular problems and other diseases, it is important that women above 30 keep a thorough and regular check on their blood glucose levels. Diabetes can be screened through a variety of tests such as fasting plasma glucose test (FPG), HA1C

test (determine average blood glucose), random plasma glucose test and oral glucose tolerance test. If you have a history of diabetes in your family, then it can impact your present as well as future relationship with diabetes. Women above 30 with a family history of diabetes must ensure diabetes screening at regular intervals of time.

Thyroid function Test: Regular thyroid testing is very essential for women above 30 as with age, the risk of developing thyroid disorders increases. Doing the thyroid function test can help women take control of their health and ensure they receive the care they need to maintain optimal thyroid function. Many bodily functions including temperature regulation, metabolism and energy production are regulated by hormones produced by the thyroid gland. And, when the thyroid gland stops functioning normally, a wide range of symptoms can start occurring in the body including sudden weight gain or loss, mood swings, fatigue and many more. To counteract this, women above the age of 30 must get their thyroid levels checked on a regular basis. A simple thyroid profile test through blood samples can measure the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the blood and determine whether the thyroid gland is functioning normally. If the levels are abnormal, further testing and treatment may be needed to help manage the

thyroid disorder and improve overall health and well-being. It’s also important to note that women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should also have their thyroid levels checked, as thyroid disorders can affect both the mother and the developing fetus.

Check your breasts via Mammography: As you reach your 30s don’t shy away from knowing your breasts in and out. Having an in-depth evaluation of your breasts via mammography tests can ease your life. Doing so will not only minimize the chances of complexities ahead but also will uncover your ‘might have it’ fear. Mammography is one of the most crucial aspects that women above 30 should highly consider. This test comprises screening of your breasts through an X-ray image to investigate symptoms or unusual findings like lumps in them. It is an important tool to rule out whether a woman suffers from breast cancer or not. In India, clinical examination is suggested to women of age 30-40 years every 6 months by an oncologist as per the general guidelines followed in the country. For women of age between 41-55 years, clinicians advise annual mammography tests along with examinations by the oncologist. And women who have crossed the age of 55 are suggested to go for a mammogram once in 2 years. Present times are very vulnerable for women to develop breast cancer. However, critical issues can be avoided

with attentive and preventive measures.

Cervical Cancer evaluation via Pap smear test: As the incidence of cervical cancer in women is increasing rapidly, it has become all the more important for women above 30 to take significant measures about it. One of the vital tools that helps in evaluating cervical cancer in women is a Pap smear test, which detects abnormal cells in the cervix before they turn cancerous. The rule of the thumb says that women above 30 should undergo a Pap smear test minimum of once every 3 years. However, it may vary from individual to individual basis their risk factors.

The bottom line is that women shouldn’t neglect the warning signs and adopt more preventive care in their lifestyle. With continuous monitoring and evaluation by specialized doctors, many critical illnesses can be detected early, treated and even prevented. Nowadays, it is very simple to book any type of diagnostic tests. All you need is a mobile phone and all the quality healthcare services are available right at your fingertips. One credible diagnostic service-providing App on your phone is enough to keep your health in check. Remember women, age can actually be just a number if you are taking up routine essential tests.

Happy Couples: How to keep your relationship healthy?

4. use the AAA plan

The AAA plan by Mira Kirshenbaum, author of The Weekend Marriage, stands for apology, affection, and a promise of action.

If you hurt your partner, apologize to them before matters get worse, show affection like a kiss or a hug, and promise that you won’t repeat the mistake.

5. start a tradition

Every couple has a tradition, which shows that they are interested in keeping the relationship alive. Go on dates on Saturday night, plan a weekend trip once every three months, take birthday trips, and plan random surprises to show your affection. Both partners should put in equal efforts as it develops a sense of understanding between a two.

6. Always be supportive

love is the foundation of every relationship but it takes more to keep it healthy. To make your relationship last and keep it healthy and strong, both partners should put in equal efforts.

There are going to arguments and disagreements but you should be able to solve them without biting each other’s heads off.

here are eight ways to your

relationship healthy and become a happy couple:

1. Learn to accept and appreciate

It is in human nature to make mistakes. You cannot expect yourself or your partner to be the best version of themselves at all times. If your partner is being wrong, use gentle words and constructive criticism to tell it to them. Make sure to tell them that you are always there whenever they need you.

2. stay playful

The secret to a long-lasting relationship is doing fun things together. Take your partner to the movies or drive across town to a new restaurant. If you are feeling defensive about something your partner said, reply using a joke instead of some rude words. Physical affection is important in every relationship. It doesn’t mean you have start making love every change you get. Give random kisses, hold hands, and give hugs as it releases feel good hormones and keeps the two of you close.

3. Give your partner personal space

Humans want closeness but they also want their own space. Cuddle up on some mornings but on other days, get on with your schedule, so neither of you feel pricked.

If your partner is starting a new business or taking up on a new habit, encourage and support them. The key is to believe in your partner and provide guidance in every way possible. If your partner is working over time, help with the dishes, put the children to bed, and give them a nice massage in the night.

7. show vulnerability

You don’t have to be strong all the time in front of your partner. Showing vulnerability strengthens emotional intimacy between the two of you and helps to understand each other’s strengths, weaknesses, fears, and phobias. Don’t shy away from asking for help whether it is helping with work or coping up with stress.

Never miss an opportunity to show how much you love them. Bring them flowers, favorite ice cream, or take them to random dinners at their favorite restaurant.

All you need to know about dementia in dogs

In this month’s article, we will be discussing a common condition found in canines, known as “canine cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome”. In simple terms, one can refer to this condition as Dog Dementia as well. yes, this is similar to the condition that we can see in humans, as they also age with time.

playing time and also training, or needing to train again, will be introduced as well. Other adjustments that can be made to facilitate a dog with this condition is to provide night lights for your canine companion to navigate throughout the house easier in the dark. Place training pads near your dog so that there is a place for him or her to use the washroom in case of an emergency, where they cannot control their urination or bowel movement. Certain medications or behavioral treatments may also be advised by your veterinarian based on the individual case of your pet. Diet is also a key component to managing a better lifestyle. Certain

supplements can also be added to the diet regiment in order to help with your dog’s cognitive function. Such as: Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Selenium, Beta Carotene, Carotenoids, Flavonoids, Omega-3 and Carnitine. Follow-up appointments with your veterinarian may be needed regularly.

Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome correlates with the aging of the dog’s brain, which causes them to eventually lose their sharp awareness of their surroundings, learning capabilities, responsiveness and even memory.

The symptoms will first appear to be of a mild state; however, they will progress with time and unfortunately worsen and become more severe. This process is known as ‘Cognitive Decline’.

The signs of this condition are anxiety, restlessness, not wishing to play anymore, slow to learn new training, disorientation, decreased grooming, confusion, forgetting previous training, no control over urinating or defecating, sleep patterns altered, decreased appetite, excessive licking, frustration and barking. According to statistics, it is seen that at least one out of every three dogs that are over the age of

ten will display at least one sign of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. If you feel that your dog may be showing any of these signs, then your veterinarian can perform a full physical examination. He or she will also need a full history of when the symptom(s) initially presented themselves, in order to conduct a proper diagnosis of this condition. Other diagnostic measures may also be performed in order to rule out any other underlying causes for such exhibiting signs.

Canines that are diagnosed with Dog Dementia will then begin a long-term treatment of supportive care for this condition. Such care will consist of improving your dog’s living environment and health in order to maintain an ideal condition for improvement. This will allow the Cognitive Decline to be delayed and not progress as quickly otherwise. Changes in exercise routine,

Like your face and body, your underarms also require nourishment to look and feel their best. Since the area is likely to be damp anyway, you don’t need to moisturize daily.

Flaunt beautiful, smooth underarms this summer!

Summer is almost here and even though you may apply copious amounts of sunscreen to exposed skin to protect it, body parts like the underarms take the biggest hit, particularly in warm weather.

Razor bumps, roughness, dark scars, patchiness, and skin irritation are all visible there. While washing your underarms frequently, ideally twice a day, is a good way to keep them clean, there are some quick tricks you can use to keep the pit region smooth and fresh.

Tender Love Shaving!

Leaving for a summer adventure with no time on your hands? Prep your underarms prior to shaving. Shaving on dry skin is a big no! Soak the area you plan to shave for a few minutes and remember to shave in the direction of the hair growth. Psst…take your time and be extra gentle on your underarms.

Bindass Roll-On!

Investing in a deo roll on is the easiest solution to confidently flaunt your sundresses. Repeated use of it over a period will only leave you with smooth and beautiful underarms. So, you must try a roll-on that has 0 per cent alcohol and

is safe and gentle for direct application on skin. A roll-on can be used even by those who have sensitive underarm skin.

Just Moisturize It!

Like your face and body, your underarms also require nourishment to look and feel their best. Since the area is likely to be damp anyway, you don’t need to moisturize daily. Opt for a pH-balanced lotion to keep your underarms - hydrated, calm and soft. Exfoliation for the win!

Be sure to include a loofah as part of your cleansing routine. This will help remove dry and dead skin from the underarm area. While this routine is sufficient to maintain overall health of your underarms, for those wanting to go the extra mile can also try chemical exfoliants with AHA and BHA. Be sure to add these tips in your daily skincare routine and flaunt beautiful, smooth, even-toned underarms all summer!

‘Zwigato’: Kapil charms, Shahana shines in a powerful film

Duration: 104 minutes.

Director: Nandita Das.

Cast: Kapil Sharma, Shahana Goswami.

Cinematography: Ranjan Palit.

Music: Sagar Desai/Hitesh Soni. IANs Rating: ****

New India is multi-faceted, multi-optional with many of the well-heeled being spoilt for choices while choosing a vocation. But despite all the so-called growth, several other categories of middle-class young men and women reel under pressure to find themselves age- and skill-appropriate employment.

For the Alpha generation, the e-commerce food delivery companies are a blessing, for they cater to the needs and orders of the customers who are more demanding and have more convenience and control over how and when they order their food. But that’s for the customers; the employees of such businesses face the brunt of it.

A double-edged sword for the unemployed in India, the sudden thriving numbers of delivery services have led to a Catch-22 situation. They have, in some ways, generated some income for those out of jobs, they barely earn the ‘delivery boys’ the respect that they deserve.

Nandita Das’s third directorial (after the critically acclaimed ‘Firaaq’ and an equally sensitive ‘Manto’), ‘Zwigato’ encapsulates all the alternating vicissitudes that India and its economy are facing today. She narrates a story without being overly judgemental and leaving the harsh and ugly realities as also the unmasked emotional moments as they ought to be.

That Nandita Das, an accomplished actor-director, would come up with a story that makes it compulsive viewing is a given. What is pleasantly surprising is the subject she has chosen as the theme of the film.

By using a trope that India is too familiar with -- namely, the food delivery apps, she lays bare the challenges of common people in a social milieu that offers few options for strugglers. One gets to see an underlying political stagnation as well. Without be-

ing preachy, she lets the viewers figure out for themselves the ups and downs of the unbalanced society we live in.

At the heart of the 104-minute narrative is Kapil Sharma, who plays Manas Mahto, a migrant from Jharkhand, who along with his wife Pratima (Shahana Goswami), two children and ailing mother, comes to an expanding Bhubaneswar to explore possibilities of a decent life.

Losing his floor manager’s job in a firm, he finds nothing substantial and is forced to work as a food delivery rider, grappling with the app on his phone and the world of ratings and incentives. His everyday struggle is painful as he tries hard to cope with keeping perfect timing for deliveries to make ends meet.

Manas isn’t alone fighting for survival; Pratima too, not content with being just another homemaker, looks around for different work opportunities to support her husband’s income. And so, from being a masseuse for rich women to a cleaner at a mall, she tries her hand at everything. At the heart of her efforts is a tremendous will and desire to better their lives.

In a scene when the couple gets to know that Manas’s elder brother and family would be visiting, she decides to stitch together old sarees and bedsheets to partition the single room they have so that the visiting family could have a separate area to

themselves. She tries to accommodate her guests wholeheartedly, not letting her extra work come in the way of her eagerness to be hospitable.

Manas, in the meantime, faces a number of hurdles while making an all-out effort to earn just Rs 15 per delivery. There is an instance when a couple erroneously orders 20 pizzas amid revelry at an apartment. When Manas arrives with the order, he is greeted with liquor bottles and other remains of the party, and even treated most shabbily by the owner of the flat, who asks him to leave just two pizzas and take away the rest.

The place that the couple live in isn’t even a proper house -- it is at best a makeshift living arrangement -- but it abounds in the warmth of a home. Manas and Pratima and even their daughter unhesitatingly clean up the indisposed bedridden mother, whose problem of incontinence is never grudged, or is allowed to become an irritant. Each member of the family just performs his or her duty unquestioningly.

Manas and his ilk, who are almost enslaved by their ruthless employers, merely play along without asking any questions. If there’s one thing that irks Manas, it is the thanklessness with which he is greeted by customers. Not that he shows any displeasure openly.

At best, he retorts to a caption that says “Mazdoor hain tabhi

majboor hain!” (We are poor laborers and hence vulnerable and defenceless!) with the moan, “Majboor hai tabhi mazdoor hain” (We are helpless, therefore we are laborers!).

On the face of it, the film presents itself as a story of an easy-going man who doesn’t let his frustrations get the better of him too often, except, perhaps, when his dignity is threatened to be compromised. A sharp comment here and an oblique -at times direct too -- hint many a times at the class divide that’s so apparent in India, makes the film a much layered and incisive attempt.

Kapil Sharma as Manas lives the role not once falling prey to his much-adored status as the undisputed king of comedy. Viewers will be in for a pleasant surprise to see him stripped of his image that has earned him millions of fans worldwide. He slips into the character of Manas with such ease that it may force his admirers to do a double take. At places he performs like a seasoned actor.

His co-actor Shahana Goswami as Pratima is note-perfect and lets much of her silences and pauses speak for her undeniable talent as a consummate actor. If Kapil slips into playing Manas effortlessly, she, on her part, brings quiet dignity and unreserved sensitivity to her role. Cameos by Sayani Gupta and Gul Panag, though minuscule, are extremely believable too.

Photography by Ranjan Patil is understated, letting the unpretentious backdrop of Bhubaneswar convey the striking contrast between the grime and occasional pallor of Manas and Shahana’s life and the dazzle of the sprawling malls alongside.

The film is a social commentary, but it doesn’t leave any didactic message for viewers. But if there’s anything as a takeaway, it would make arrogant and affluent consumers of home deliveries give a serious rethink to their sense of entitlement when they come in contact with porters, carriers and delivery men.

It was earlier in March, when Amitabh suffered an injury during the shoot of ‘Project K’, in Hyderabad.

The actor shared his health update on his blog. After consulting a doctor and CT scan at AIG Hospital in Hyderabad, he left for Mumbai, where he is taking rest at his home.

The 80-year-old suffered a muscle tear to his right rib cage during an action sequence of the film. He wrote that after the incident the film shoot was postponed.

Big B even thanked his fans for wishing him a speedy recovery and hoped that he will be ‘back on the ramp soon’.

Taking to Instagram, Ami-

Rani Mukerji feels good content-driven films can pull audience to theatres

She points out that her recent release is a prime example of this.

The actress said: I’m glad that ‘Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway’ is showing us that a content film can be a theatrical film in a post pandemic world. I feel as an industry we just need to make films that touch people’s hearts and not focus on which genre will work on the big screen and which won’t. If we make a film that’s good, there will always be an audience who will come to the big screen to have a unique community viewing experience.”

She further mentioned: “As a society, we want to celebrate and experience things together. So, I have never believed that people are turning their backs to theatres after the pandemic. People just want to see new, fresh and disruptive content that is engaging enough for them to step out and invest their time and money over it.”

Chuffed with the response to the film, Rani shared that a good film will always resonate with the audience at large.

“I’m really happy to see the response from audiences because they have been giving the film with overwhelming amounts of love and I can’t thank them enough. I have always believed that a good film will always resonate with people and they will come out to the theatres to get an experience that is uplifting,” she concluded.

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch prepares for 5th marriage at 92

Less than a year after divorcing model-actress Jerry Hall, the 92-year-old australian american media mogul, Rupert Murdoch, is hearing wedding bells again.

He’s engaged to Ann Lesley Smith, a 66-year-old San Francisco police chaplain, reports ‘Variety’. Quoting gossip columnist Cindy Adams, who broke the story in the ‘New York Post’, ‘Variety’ says Murdoch’s future wife was married to Chester Smith, a country-western singer, as well as a radio and TV executive who died in 2008.

Adams reports that the two bonded over their shared knowledge of the media business as well as the fact that she once owned a vineyard and he still does.

If they tie the knot, according to ‘Variety’, it will be Murdoch’s fifth marriage. Jerry Hall, a model and actress, was married to Murdoch for six years. In addition to Hall, Murdoch was previously married to Wendi Deng from 1999 to 2013; Anna Maria Torv from 1967 to 1999; and Patricia Booker, from 1956 to 1967.

Murdoch serves as chairman of Fox Corporation, a publicly traded entity that controls Fox Broadcasting, Fox Sports, Fox Business, and Fox News. As the head of News Corporation, he also owns the ‘New York Post’, in addition to the ‘Wall Street Journal’, ‘The Sun’ and the publishing house Harper Collins.

The news of his marriage comes as Murdoch is facing a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox by Dominion Voting, adds ‘Variety’. The technology company alleges that Fox News anchors made knowingly false claims about Dominion’s influence on the 2020 election, implying that it rigged the race to favour Joe Biden.

What’s inside each Oscar

Alos Angels based marketing company Distinctive Assets has been distributing gift bags to oscar nominees since 2002 but is unaffiliated with the Academy.

The ‘Everyone wins’ gift bags are estimated to be worth a whopping $1,26,000 this year.

This year the bag has over 60 items and is filled with several beauty and lifestyle gifts, it has tickets for luxury vacations that include a $40,000 getaway to a Canadian estate named ‘The lifestyle’. It also includes a stay for eight people including friends and relatives in an Italian lighthouse.

The gift also has a symbolic souvenir for a piece of land in Queensland, Australia.

The gift bag also includes a $25,000 coupon for project management and a home restoration fee from Maison construction. There are coupons for lipo arm sculpting, facelift, and hair restoration services.

There will be a Havaianas suitcase this year to deliver the gifts and 50 per cent of the products reportedly come from companies that are women and minority-owned.

The gift packs will have skin care products from Miage, a silk pillowcase from Blush silks, a travel pillow from PETA, and products from Ariadne Athens skin wellness, Daily Energy Cards, Kind Reason Co, Rarete studios, Refa, Proflexa, oxygenetix and many others.

The gift pack that comprises of least expensive gifts

include a pack of Clif Thins priced at $13.56 and $18 loaf of Japanese milk bread from Ginza Nishikawa.

Even as the products and services in the bag come for free, the recipient will have to pay taxes for it as it is considered as an income

Interestingly the company Distinctive Assets had a direct confrontation with the Academy awards committee in 2016 when the gift bag had marijuana vape pens, sex toys and a vampire breast lift. The Academy does not want to link with it and hence Distinctive Assets can no longer use the trademark of the Academy.

Another controversy of 2016 was that it included a gift hamper for a $55,000 vacation to Israel that come from the Israel tourism ministry and the travel company ExploreIsrael. com. several organisations came out against this which include Jewish Voice for Peace, the us Campaign to End the Israeli occupation.

It may be noted that the 2020 gift bag is rated as the most expensive and is esti mated at $225,000. The gifts included a 24K gold Royal Charka bath bomb, a 24K gold vape pen from Hollowtips and a $20,000 one year membership to a matchmaking service.

Tips to keep in mind extreme conditions

Studying a few winter hiking guidelines can help you get ready for any hike you plan to go on while staying warm and safe. Whether you’re walking through the snow outside or simply admiring the scenery, this winter hiking advice will surely make your experience enjoyable. All of the factors that contribute to a trek in the great outdoors being secure can be met with the right equipment, tips, clothing, and attitude for winter hiking.

“Cold weather might be a problem on any hiking trip at any time of year, not just in the dead of winter. Depending on your location and the area you’re hiking in, you may come across chilly weather at any time of year, which might make your journey uncomfortable or, worst yet, result in a significant injury or disease,” says Gayatri Mohanty.

Check the weather and trail conditions in advance

Being aware of the weather is one of the most essential winter hiking tips because it can affect the trail by covering it with new snow, which can be quite confusing while you are hiking. Knowing the weather conditions also makes it easier to avoid hiking when there are strong winds, chances of heavy snowfall, or poor visibility. It is therefore advisable to be aware of the anticipated temperatures and wind speed ahead. You can always hike safely in the snow if you follow our advice.

Maintain constant hydration

When trekking in the cold, always make sure you have an insulated bottle and a bottle sleeve with you. If you do this while hiking in bitterly cold weather, the water won’t freeze. If you forget to bring an insulated bottle on your trek or don’t have one, you can also use a spare sock or wrap the water bottle in a towel to keep it warm and insulated.

Carry the proper winter hiking equipment

If your upcoming trip includes hiking paths, you must pack the appropriate winter hiking equipment. When hiking, wearing the appropriate shoes, bag, jacket, and even jeans can make a big impact.

Trekking in the winter and the summer is a totally different experience. It’s important to prepare for your hikes in preparation because it might come in handy whenever and wherever you are.

boots during your winter excursions, it’s ideal to wear comfy ones.

Hike

during the daytime

When we hike on our trails in the summer, we often try to stay out of the sun. In contrast, hiking in the winter is completely different. To feel the warmth of the sun in the chilly months, we would basically do anything. You’ll be able to stay warm and have a better time hiking if you plan your hikes for when the sun is out and blazing brightly in the sky. Due to the drop in temperature in the evening, it is also recommended that you schedule your hikes so that you begin early and finish before the sun sets.

The most important thing to remember when trekking in the snow is to keep yourself warm. You can begin by donning a base layer, followed by a fleece jacket that serves as your intermediate layer, and finally a jacket or down jacket that will aid in insulation and safeguard your body from the cold. Softshell trousers are typically advised when trekking in the winter because they are great at maintaining body heat at all times and shielding you from severe winds and snow.

Pack extra equipment

A fire starter, first aid kit, pocket knife, emergency blanket, waterproof matches, and a waterproof backpack are a few other items you can bring with you on your trek. Bringing an extra kit on your hike will always come in handy and be beneficial for surviving in adverse weather. When you are trekking in snow, all of these things will make a huge impact. Since trekking in snow can be slick and slushy when the snow is melting, they also give you protection and a better grip on the snow.

for your winter hike, bring snacks

During your hikes, it’s critical to keep yourself hydrated and energized at all times. Your body often needs twice as many calories to stay warm and hydrated while trekking in the winter as it does at other times of the year. In order to keep energized at all times, be sure to pack yourself some meals that are both very nutritional and protein-rich. Organic pumpkin seeds, granola bars, protein bars, and even your own homemade trail mix are all suitable for carrying as cold-weather snacks.

Consistently keep your feet warm

While snowshoeing, it’s crucial to keep your feet warm. Make sure you include several pairs of woolbased hiking socks that will keep moisture off of your damp skin. In the event that it gets wet while you’re hiking, it dries rapidly and also aids in heat insulation. When trekking, snow is kept off of your feet at all times by donning hiking boots that go up to the ankle. A pair of gaiters, which save your feet from getting buried in the snow, is another item you can get. As you’ll be spending a lot of time in your
