surrey Police Service (SPS) is committed to community policing and to being responsive to the needs of the different neighbourhoods within the boundaries of the City of Surrey. This is true for educational facilities as well. Whether they are K-12 or post secondary institutions, places of learning in Surrey are, really, communities within the community. Each comes with a specific set of challenges and advantages. That said, there is a shared formula for a successful community which involves engagement, commitment from stakeholders, and fostering an environment that allows the members to flourish.
SPS Sergeant Jag Khosa visited several communities within our community in the last month. From spending time with grade 6 and 7 students at a north Surrey elementary school to a gang presentation he delivered to university students at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Surrey Campus, the central message was the same – youth and their places of learning are important.
Sergeant Khosa joined Surrey School Trustee Gary Thind and Surrey District Parents Advisory Council Representative Rani Sanghera on Red FM on February 15 for a panel discussion concerning school and community safety. Elementary schools, secondary schools and post secondary institutions in our city are deserving of attention and support because these
small communities form part of the larger one. The health and success of these places of learning for Surrey’s youth is so important because, while the immediate impact is on the city today, the larger impact will be on our collective future tomorrow.

The vibrant festival of Vaisakhi
the festival of vaisakhi is celebrated to mark the onset of spring in India. the time of vaisakhi usually signifies the end of the harvest season, and is an occasion of tremendous joy and festivity for farmers.
The celebrations are concentrated in the states of Punjab and Haryana. In other parts of India, Vaisakhi is known by diverse names – Pohela Boishakh in West Bengal, Bohag Bihu in Assam, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Pooram Vishu in Kerala and Maha Vishuva Sankranti in Odisha.
How is it celebrated?
The celebrations start with people bathing in a holy river and going to Gurudwaras, chief of which are the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the Gurudwara at Anandpur Sahib, where Khalsa was born, and Talwandi Sabo, where Guru Gobind Singh recompiled the sacred Guru Granth Sahib. After the prayers, people delve into merriment and dance and sing. The popular phrase ‘Jatta Aayi Vaisakhi’ is proclaimed loudly in neighborhoods as gleeful farmers celebrate a bountiful harvest. For Sikhs, the celebration of this holiday recalls another new beginning: the formation of the Khalsa, the special company
of the faithful to which all initiated Sikhs belong. The Khalsa was founded by the tenth Sikh guru, Gobind Singh. The initiation rite called khande di pahul, or “taking amrit,” frequently takes place on this day, the anniversary of the first initiations.
One of the main events on Vaisakhi is the raising of the Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag. The huge flagpole must be unbolted and lowered as scores of men and women support its weight, and others sing shabads. The flagpole is then washed and the new flag is installed. The wrapping cloth of the flag extends down to the base of the platform, and is fastened with ties of the same orange color as the flag. The new Nishan Sahib is raised as people shout the Sikh slogan “Jo Bole so Nihal,” “Who says this will be exalted!” Each is an swered with the affirma-
tion of what it is that needs to be said: “Sat Sri Akal!” or “God is Truth!” In all, Vaisakhi is a joyful and festive occasion.
Feasts are an integral part of the festival and the traditional Karah Prasad (a semolina concoction prepared with wheat, clarified butter and sugar) is a special delicacy. People congregate for lunch at the guru-ka-langar or community kitchen at the Gurudwaras and after a shared meal, take out grand processions
of Nagar Kirtan, in which devotional songs are played, led by five Khalsas dressed as Panj Pyare, pass across the streets in the wee hours of the morning. Devotees also visit the Gurudwaras to offer their prayers and seek blessings. Several fairs are also organized where festivities are observed with Bhangra and Gidda performances, folk songs, amusement rides and delicious food.

The computer lab is only the first of many significant steps Dr. Verma plans to take towards achieving that goal, for his commitment to education extends beyond just the computer lab. He is also promoting scholarships for bright students across different regional schools and colleges. He aims to provide better education to those who cannot afford it due to financial constraints.
Dr. Avi Verma expressed his deep attachment to the school, where his father had been principal for almost two decades. For this reason and to honour the school and his father’s legacy, Dr. Verma has always sought ways to give back.
The inauguration ceremony was attended
by school staff, students, and local officials, who all expressed gratitude to Dr. Verma for his generosity and dedication to education. The computer lab is a fitting tribute to the legacy of Principal B.R. Verma and a testament to the power of education to transform lives.

The intestinal damage often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating and anemia, and can lead to serious complications.
There’s no cure for celiac disease — but for most people, following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.

Bone weakening: Malabsorption of calcium and vitamin D can lead to a softening of the bone (osteomalacia or rickets) in children and a loss of bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) in adults.
Infertility and miscarriage: Malabsorption of calcium and vitamin D can contribute to reproductive issues.

We have all heard that “age doesn’t matter if your heart is full of life,” while it may be true in some sense, one needs to be attentive about their age and address the complexities it brings into life. As women move to their 30’s, the body instantly starts experiencing the turbulence of hormonal changes. They become more susceptible to a multitude of diseases waiting at this stretch of the age-group.
In order to stay healthy and avoid the varied form of diseases, women above 30 years of age must undergo the following tests:
Heart screening through blood tests: Your heart can skip a beat and you might not even get to know it. Many times women tend to experience racing heartbeats, chronic fatigue and high levels of anxiety but ignore all the symptoms of cardiovascular problems very easily. Most of the time they assume that a heavy workload is causing this trouble. Little do they know that these can be the warning signs about their heart condition. What to do then? Simple. Start with the basics. Book your blood tests either via online diagnostic platforms or simply from the one near you. These tests must include an hs-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) test along with blood pressure, cholesterol tests, blood glucose tests, and BMI measurements to check obesity. The hs-CRP tests indicate the risk of heart attack by measuring C-reactive protein which is a marker of inflammation or infection associated with heart issues.
Regular Diabetes screening: Diabetes is a major concern for populations worldwide. Since diabetes can cause major health complications among women such as kidney issues, cardiovascular problems and other diseases, it is important that women above 30 keep a thorough and regular check on their blood glucose levels. Diabetes can be screened through a variety of tests such as fasting plasma glucose test (FPG), HA1C

New India is multi-faceted, multi-optional with many of the well-heeled being spoilt for choices while choosing a vocation. But despite all the so-called growth, several other categories of middle-class young men and women reel under pressure to find themselves age- and skill-appropriate employment.
For the Alpha generation, the e-commerce food delivery companies are a blessing, for they cater to the needs and orders of the customers who are more demanding and have more convenience and control over how and when they order their food. But that’s for the customers; the employees of such businesses face the brunt of it.
A double-edged sword for the unemployed in India, the sudden thriving numbers of delivery services have led to a Catch-22 situation. They have, in some ways, generated some income for those out of jobs, they barely earn the ‘delivery boys’ the respect that they deserve.
Nandita Das’s third directorial (after the critically acclaimed ‘Firaaq’ and an equally sensitive ‘Manto’), ‘Zwigato’ encapsulates all the alternating vicissitudes that India and its economy are facing today. She narrates a story without being overly judgemental and leaving the harsh and ugly realities as also the unmasked emotional moments as they ought to be.
That Nandita Das, an accomplished actor-director, would come up with a story that makes it compulsive viewing is a given. What is pleasantly surprising is the subject she has chosen as the theme of the film.
By using a trope that India is too familiar with -- namely, the food delivery apps, she lays bare the challenges of common people in a social milieu that offers few options for strugglers. One gets to see an underlying political stagnation as well. Without be-
ing preachy, she lets the viewers figure out for themselves the ups and downs of the unbalanced society we live in.
At the heart of the 104-minute narrative is Kapil Sharma, who plays Manas Mahto, a migrant from Jharkhand, who along with his wife Pratima (Shahana Goswami), two children and ailing mother, comes to an expanding Bhubaneswar to explore possibilities of a decent life.
Losing his floor manager’s job in a firm, he finds nothing substantial and is forced to work as a food delivery rider, grappling with the app on his phone and the world of ratings and incentives. His everyday struggle is painful as he tries hard to cope with keeping perfect timing for deliveries to make ends meet.
Manas isn’t alone fighting for survival; Pratima too, not content with being just another homemaker, looks around for different work opportunities to support her husband’s income. And so, from being a masseuse for rich women to a cleaner at a mall, she tries her hand at everything. At the heart of her efforts is a tremendous will and desire to better their lives.
In a scene when the couple gets to know that Manas’s elder brother and family would be visiting, she decides to stitch together old sarees and bedsheets to partition the single room they have so that the visiting family could have a separate area to
themselves. She tries to accommodate her guests wholeheartedly, not letting her extra work come in the way of her eagerness to be hospitable.
Manas, in the meantime, faces a number of hurdles while making an all-out effort to earn just Rs 15 per delivery. There is an instance when a couple erroneously orders 20 pizzas amid revelry at an apartment. When Manas arrives with the order, he is greeted with liquor bottles and other remains of the party, and even treated most shabbily by the owner of the flat, who asks him to leave just two pizzas and take away the rest.
The place that the couple live in isn’t even a proper house -- it is at best a makeshift living arrangement -- but it abounds in the warmth of a home. Manas and Pratima and even their daughter unhesitatingly clean up the indisposed bedridden mother, whose problem of incontinence is never grudged, or is allowed to become an irritant. Each member of the family just performs his or her duty unquestioningly.
Manas and his ilk, who are almost enslaved by their ruthless employers, merely play along without asking any questions. If there’s one thing that irks Manas, it is the thanklessness with which he is greeted by customers. Not that he shows any displeasure openly.
At best, he retorts to a caption that says “Mazdoor hain tabhi
majboor hain!” (We are poor laborers and hence vulnerable and defenceless!) with the moan, “Majboor hai tabhi mazdoor hain” (We are helpless, therefore we are laborers!).
On the face of it, the film presents itself as a story of an easy-going man who doesn’t let his frustrations get the better of him too often, except, perhaps, when his dignity is threatened to be compromised. A sharp comment here and an oblique -at times direct too -- hint many a times at the class divide that’s so apparent in India, makes the film a much layered and incisive attempt.
Kapil Sharma as Manas lives the role not once falling prey to his much-adored status as the undisputed king of comedy. Viewers will be in for a pleasant surprise to see him stripped of his image that has earned him millions of fans worldwide. He slips into the character of Manas with such ease that it may force his admirers to do a double take. At places he performs like a seasoned actor.
His co-actor Shahana Goswami as Pratima is note-perfect and lets much of her silences and pauses speak for her undeniable talent as a consummate actor. If Kapil slips into playing Manas effortlessly, she, on her part, brings quiet dignity and unreserved sensitivity to her role. Cameos by Sayani Gupta and Gul Panag, though minuscule, are extremely believable too.
Photography by Ranjan Patil is understated, letting the unpretentious backdrop of Bhubaneswar convey the striking contrast between the grime and occasional pallor of Manas and Shahana’s life and the dazzle of the sprawling malls alongside.
The film is a social commentary, but it doesn’t leave any didactic message for viewers. But if there’s anything as a takeaway, it would make arrogant and affluent consumers of home deliveries give a serious rethink to their sense of entitlement when they come in contact with porters, carriers and delivery men.
