Proud to work with the best It’s been an extremely busy few months at Farmer Autovillage in Mount Maunganui. Tauranga’s largest destination dealership has been enjoying a period of exciting growth and success, including the addition of new brands to their already extensive catalogue.
One change that is proving beneficial to the company is the appointment of Blair Woolford
as the new sales manager for Prestige Brands at the dealership, responsible for Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda. Blair has been in the motor industry for 13 years, the last four of these at Farmer Autovillage where he has gained broad product knowledge across the company’s many new vehicle brands. He is excited to be responsible for marketing three of the world’s fastest-growing premier marques, from dynamic companies who use leading edge technology and design to build outstanding cars. He also finds working for the Farmer Motor Group very rewarding on a daily basis. “It is a sound, family-owned company with high levels of integrity
and a great team of people. “This allows us to build long-term relationships with our customers that are based on trust and offer them the same high levels of quality and service, year in and year out.” Blair is joined in the prestige car division by Charlie Shephard, responsible for Volkswagen Sales and new Audi Sales Consultant, Richard Tucker. Charlie is a long-standing member of the Farmer Autovillage team, who has been recently promoted and has extensive knowledge of “all things VW”. With a high level of commitment and infectious enthusiasm for his new role, Charlie brings a fresh approach that customers are sure to appreciate. Richard is the newest member of the team and has enjoyed many successful years of selling prestige motor vehicles

New Passat. Sharper thinking. Everything about the new Passat TDI is simply smarter. To begin with, the advanced 2-litre diesel engines output up to an impressive 350Nm of torque with 125kW of power. But perhaps what’s even more impressive is the addition of the revolutionary BlueMotion Technologies that improves fuel efficiency by up to 13 percent*, over its predecessor. Complementing this is its reduced emissions, which means the Passat achieves a Euro 5 rating. Safety has been well thought through with the introduction of a new Fatigue Detection system. Another first for Volkswagen, it detects waning driver concentration levels and alerts the driver to take a break when driving long distances. Plus it has been awarded a 5-star EuroNCAP safety rating, giving you further peace of mind. And as for driver and passenger comfort, that’s nicely taken care of with ample legroom, headroom and three ergonomically contoured rear seats. All in all, the new generation Passat is a car that’s sharper than the rest. To consider the new Passat as carefully as we did, call us on <dealer number> and arrange a test drive.

He is a great asset to the company and looks forward to meeting new and existing clients during the coming months and to experiencing all the fabulous lifestyle activities that Tauranga offers. “2011 has been a terrific year so far,” says Blair. “VW is enjoying its biggest sales volume year ever and Audi is also on track to surpass sales targets.” Exciting new products due to be released soon will also boost the popularity of both brands. The new Audi Q3 is available in early 2012, while Volkswagen is unveiling their all-new Beetle next year as well. Customers are warmly invited to call in and meet the Bay Prestige team. Cruising quietly in style
The Honda Insight is a fully optioned car first and an economical hybrid second.
There will always be the diehard petrol fans out there who will growl, grizzle and moan about the world of real motoring ‘going to hell’ in a hybrid-powered handcart. However, when you hear that even Porsche is playing around with engines that involve power other than petrol, gasoline lovers may just have to reconsider their stance in a highcost petrol world. For well over a decade, Honda has been busy working out alternative ways to bring power to the motorised public using an energy source that doesn’t come out of the ground. With their latest release, the Insight, it would seem Honda have been giving the hybrid power market very serious consideration indeed. It also puts some real heat on other brands … for the same price as a new Toyota Corolla, you can now buy in to the latest hybrid technology.
the variable transmission to make them less peaky and the engine more economical. It also fine tunes the car for maximum fuel efficiency.
Growing trees
When you activate the ECON button the digital display on your dash starts to grow trees – the more trees, the more economical your driving is. The “four tree” target was one that became surprisingly addictive. Despite the test drive being limited to around town and Takatimu Drive for some open road cruising, those trees were relatively easy to obtain. It is surprising how quickly, with its easily visible dash display, the Insight coaxes a smoother, more relaxed driving attitude into its pilot. Having said this, it’s obvious Honda has gone to great lengths to ensure the Insight is a five door practical hatchback car first and a
low-roll resistant tyres don’t seem to compromise that on the corners. Putting the Auto-stop on the job with the ECON button of course makes traffic light stops disconcertingly quiet affairs, but something you quickly get used to and indeed welcome, knowing it is helping drive down that fuel consumption. Unlike the Prius, there is no noticeable electric pick up from a standing start – it is conventional petrol all the way, with the electric engine acting as more of a booster later, rather than to get the car moving. This makes the Insight feel more like a conventional car, which is important if we are to convert a generation of petrol heads to the beauty of hybrid economy.
Feature packed
Just because you are helping save the planet – or at least extend its life a bit longer – Honda has not skimped on the luxuries you

Smarter technology
The Insight is built off the platform of the Honda Jazz, but there the similarity ends. It has a sleek, sporty look about it that clearly does as much as its power combination to explain how it can deliver an average fuel consumption of only 4.6 litres per 100km. It is this miserly sipping figure that made it the winner of the 1700km AA Energywise Rally last year. There is full climate air conditioning, a decent six speaker stereo with MP3/USB inputs, cruise control and full steering wheel remotes. The rear boot space is significant and becomes a whole lot bigger by folding the seats down. The seating is supportive and comfortable, with good head room and adequate leg space. Up front, the driver has a well spec’d level of controls at his or her command.
The trip computer is a wonder for its ease of use and information. You can record economy levels for multiple trips, time spent travelling and of course, how sensible your driving is, thanks to those trees. If you marry all of the above-mentioned technology and performance with a price that is almost $15,000 less than its rival, the Insight begs to be considered by even the most ardent petrol lover. Jaguar club for Bay The leather seats, the wooden panelling and the alluring curves. Talk to a Jag car lover and they all have plenty of reasons for the appeal. For Martin Winiata, it is the special ambience of the British cars that sets them aside – especially the leather and wooden panel touches. After a lifetime of aspiring, Martin treated himself to his first Jaguar seven years ago. The president of the new Bay of Plenty Jaguar Drivers Club is a little unusual among the 50 members for waiting so long to succumb to his passion, but says most members like him are ordinary folk who have worked hard “for a little luxury”. “We turn up in our jags and most people automatically think we’ve got deep pockets – but 90 per cent of us are just plain Kiwis who like Jags.” He says this was just one of the common topics of conversation when members of the new club meet. “There was a need for a club for the area which catered to everyone interested in Jags and European cars so we set this up.” Martin says the club aims to provide a forum “for owners, drivers and lovers of the marque” to enjoy a range of outings and activities. “We’ve had so much interest that it’s been great – and we are continuing to get new member almost every week.” Martin counters the belief that Jaguar enthusiasts are always middle aged men, explaining the club has many women members, including a few younger ones. “One of our strengths is the level of participation and support we have from our womenfolk, some of whom

also own Jaguars.” In fact the club opens its doors to anyone interested in Jaguars or European cars, whether they own a Jag or not. “The majority do own Jags or British cars, but the main thing is that you are
interested in cars.” Martin says the fuel economy and price of Jaguars has improved dramatically – to the point where they are no longer the preserve of the wealthy. “Now they are no different to a Holden or Ford or Toyota for a similar price – but you still get the special touch of luxury. “They used to be gas guzzlers, but they have made them very economical these days. My six litre does about nine-ten litres per 100 kilometres these days, which is pretty good. The club offers a range of activities and events to cater to everyone’s interests
and schedule – from day trips, overnight stays or weekend excursions in the cars. “There is something going on each week – whether it’s a technical workshop or a guest speaker or just a social event.” Day trip excursions see members driving all the great roads around the central North Island – particularly around the Bay of Plenty and the Coromandel Peninsula. The next excursions planned include trips to New Plymouth and Tiara. Interested in joining the Jag club? Phone Martin 07 574 0469 or email mfwiniata@xtra.co.nz By Hamish Carter
