Connor Johnston Mount Maunganui’s rising film star With the eyes of the world on New Zealand as a desirable place to be, coupled with recent government investment into a growing screen industry, the film and television community has its eye on Connor Johnston as one of the country’s next emerging stars. Mount Maunganui actor Connor has already scored a role in a movie alongside BAFTA award-winning and Oscar nominated Tim Roth, has just wrapped filming two television series, and is set to star in a NZ On Air funded web series shooting in August 2021. Connor’s mentor and fellow actor, Blair Strang of Shortland Street and Nothing Trivial, has no doubt that Connor will be a future household name. Blair said: “He is not only a fine young man, but in my view one of the rising stars in the New Zealand acting scene. “Connor has a fearless ability to take on any character, constantly seeking truth and thus demanding the eye of the audience. “He’s a good looking bugger too!” If he’s the next big thing, he certainly is big. The 24-year-old former rugby and basketball player towers at 6ft 5in, with surf

beach looks and a ripped body that could easily rival any Hollywood star. Connor humbly puts it down to the boxing training he has carried out for the movie Punch, starring Quentin Tarantino stalwart Roth who featured in the likes of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and The Hateful Eight. Punch has just wrapped production in New Zealand and is currently preparing to run on the international film festival circuit before premiering in cinemas in Aotearoa and overseas. “I will make a little European trip out of it,” Connor says. “It will be incredibly exciting to have that red carpet experience alongside Tim Roth and the rest of the crew.” Connor recalls his audition in Auckland. Driving back to Tauranga he’d stopped for coffee when he got a call from the casting director. Could he could pop back to the studio to audition for a different role? He sped back for a recall on the same day and got the part, before learning the boxing ropes with New Zealand women’s Olympic team trainer Cam Todd. “The most important aspect of prepping is to do your research on the crew,” he explains. “Get the low-down on the casting directors, writers, producers and of course the director, before the audition.

the eye of the audience. He’s a good looking bugger too!”

“Know their faces and names so you can walk in the room and already be grounded in the space. I make sure I figure out what they’re currently working on. I absorb the tones of the shows that they’ve recently produced. “I try not to take rejections to heart – that’s easier said than done. I think of the whole process in the same way I’d prepare for a game of basketball.” Although he was movie-obsessed as a youngster and loved watching local theatre shows and live music with his mum, sport was his first love, with some impressive accolades in basketball picked up during his school years at Tauranga Boys’ College. He was offered a place in the National Basketball League and a scholarship to pay for his degree, but while professional basketball was an enviable offer, his dream was not to be the next Steven Adams, but the next Sam Neill. “An English teacher at school, Harlie Deacon, used to give me extra help with novel study and creative writing during lunch times,” says Connor. “He saw potential in the arts for me.” He gratefully accepted an all-inclusive Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship program, which paid for public speaking workshops and leadership programmes as well as his Waikato University degree in Business Management and Finance. He commuted to Auckland twice a week for acting training.

After his degree he attended the drama school The Actors Program, where he met television networks and secured his first role in TV3’s Head High – also starring Blair Strang. He also scored a part in season two of My Life is Murder, starring Lucy Lawless and featuring Martin Henderson of Grey’s Anatomy and Star Trek legend William Shatner. The series will air later this year in New Zealand, the US, Australia and the UK. “I was in my element in the role,” says Connor, “as during filming I had to get in the ocean a lot, which I love. I enjoy getting out on the water with mates, and laying on my board behind the sets watching the sky. It is an escape to another world for me, and one which we can all enjoy here in the Bay.” With more production companies and leading US actors eyeing up New Zealand, Connor is hoping to be in the running for exciting roles in big US productions. But in typical fashion, he is humble yet hopeful and confident about what his future prospects may hold. “I have my eye on a few great roles coming up,” says Connor, “but until the ball is in the hoop, you never know. I am working hard to achieve my dreams.” Remember his name, and watch this space, because it is certainly not “that’s all folks” for Connor Johnston. Annemarie Quill

Bay designer wins national award Bay of Plenty designer Michelle McAnulty has won national recognition at one of the biggest and most recognised kitchen and bathroom awards in the country.

Michelle McAnulty of Beaver Kitchens.

Michelle, of Beaver Kitchens, won the Bay of Plenty Chapter Recognition Kitchen Award for her work on the Fresh Start project. The remarkable win was achieved in the face of fierce design competition – mainly due to the rise in renovations and new builds across New Zealand. The project saw the renovation of a family kitchen that lacked functional storage and where all major appliances conflicted within in the space. The original space also had no line of sight to the children playing in living areas of the home or on the outdoor decks. Michelle says the client wanted a life changing design that included the relocation of the kitchen to the opposite side of the large, open-plan living area. “The new location of the kitchen would provide space for a family-friendly kitchen that was proportionate to their large family home,” says Michelle. “Increase of storage, better flow of traffic through the kitchen and connection to the outdoor living area was achievable in this new space.” The kitchen finish is a clean, fresh palette with white, timber and villa blue. A strong linear rhythm has been created with tongue and groove Dezignatek Kawhia doors and panels. The 2021 NKBA Excellence in Design Awards were judged by a panel of six judges. The 2021 judges were

Shelley Ferguson of Shelley Ferguson Studio, Chelsey Mathieson of Niche Design Co, Janice Kumar-Ward of JKW Interior Architecture and Design, Ingrid Geldof of Ingrid Geldof Design, Darren James of Darren James Interiors, and Nicola Manning of Nicola Manning Design. The judges applauded Michelle’s delicate use of colour and beautiful lighting to elevate the compact kitchen. “Budget constraints have meant a clever use of materials were needed to achieve the desired outcome,” says the panel. “The drawings and planning of the space are excellent.” NKBA President Nick Thompson, of Fisher and Paykel, says the kitchen and bathroom design and manufacturing industry is working under immense pressure, as requirement for new spaces hits peak demand. “It’s an exciting time to be in the business of creating beautiful kitchens and bathrooms,” says Nick. “Never before has the industry been so busy, and though this brings definite challenges, it also provides the opportunity for designers to work on unique projects, flex their design muscles and create a variety of magnificent spaces. “Michelle’s compact and clever kitchen design is an excellent example of this.” The 2021 Supreme Kitchen Design Award, the Supreme Bathroom Design Award and the Designer of the Year Award went to renowned Christchurch kitchen designer Davinia Sutton, of Detail by Davinia Sutton, who made history as the first designer to achieve a trifecta. Giant leaps in nano tech New Zealand’s microfabrication technology If you’re under 30 years old, the history of 3D printing is older than you think. I’ve been fascinated with 3D printing since its infancy in the early 1980s, watching models being built up in layers and avidly reading about home inventors coming up with numerous ideas. From printing affordable houses through to the first 3D-printed organ implanted into humans, the 90s was a great decade. In just 10 years, scientists had fabricated a functional miniature kidney, built a prosthetic leg and bioprinted the first blood vessels using only human cells. We now live in the future we once dreamt of, with innovators, visionaries and designers pushing the envelope to print bone replacements and even particles just a few atoms thick. Housed in a custom-made box under protective yellow light at the University of Canterbury’s Nanolab is a new, world-leading Nanoscribe 3D printer. Objects printed with this ultra-precise system are so small that an electron microscope is needed to see them. “Here at UC, our research spans both engineering and the sciences and seeks to, for example, replicate micro millimetre-scale biological structures, such as those found on the surface of a leaf or in our bodies,” says Associate Professor Nock, a Rutherford Discovery Fellow who is also a principal investigator with the Biomolecular Interactions Centre “We had real trouble reproducing these structures

previously, but the Nanoscribe 3D printer can do this with ease. There’s no other machine like it in New Zealand.” This microfabrication technology is poised to fast-track a myriad of research projects across New Zealand. High resolution 3D printed reproductions of Christchurch Cathedral, the Beehive, and a kiwi bird appear to the naked eye as mere specks. Newly installed, the equipment used to create these images – a Nanoscribe Photonic Professional GT2 3D printer – is unique to New Zealand and represents a big step forward in research at this tiniest scale. The Nanoscribe 3D printer was officially launched during July by the Hon Dr Megan Woods, Minister for Research, Science and Innovation. It can also be used to replicate the structure of single human cells with all of their surface features, with exciting ramifications for cellular and health research. The cutting-edge technology investment of almost $800,000, which combines additive manufacturing and nanotechnology, has been funded by UC as a strategic capital acquisition. Made in Germany, the Nanoscribe 3D printer arrived in January 2020, but installation was unavoidably delayed as a result of Covid-19. The machine is now in use, with fourth year students in electrical and electronic engineering at UC among the first to experience the system in action as part of their course on Nanoengineering. Sharing a legacy A snapshot of early life in Tauranga Tauranga’s The Strand has changed dramatically in 110 years. The majority of the street’s historical buildings have been replaced and the wharves have been upgraded, but a strong sense of history remains. Gabrielle Gregory has a unique insight into that history and into life in Tauranga during 1911-12. Her knowledge comes from letters and photos passed on by her great grandfather, John Carleton, who emigrated from England after buying a tailor shop with his brother Joe on The Strand. He regularly sent letters back home to his wife Alice and daughter Maggie, Gabrielle’s nana. Gabrielle inherited the letters, photos and other keepsakes at the age 16, and has kept them in pristine condition ever since. Now, at the age of 70, Gabrielle wanted to share this history and approached Life + Style to help tell her family’s story. “The letters give an insightful, personal view of life in Tauranga,” she says. “It is very rare to have that first-hand.” As Gabrielle shares her story, she reads one of the letters aloud, very excitedly and with perfect inflection.

Delving into the letters

A letter from January 17, 1912, gives an idea of how long mail took to arrive. John expected the

Christmas letters sent from his family back home in England to arrive in the second week of July. An excerpt from the letter written to Maggie – or as John called his daughter ‘My Dear Pet’ – reads: “It is a long time to wait, but I have had to exercise patience and I am just getting used to it. “Our Joe and myself, we have a box of silkworms and they are very interesting. We feed them on mulberry leaves. The kids here keep them galore. “Well I suppose I must keep something that has life until you all come to me which won’t be long now.” Alice and Maggie emigrated, arriving later in 1912. Eventually, six of the seven Carleton children relocated to New Zealand. A letter dated August 16, 1912, tells Maggie of John’s excitement about buying a house and that when she arrives, the peach, nectarine and apple trees planted by uncle Joe will be in bloom. The letter was sent to Hobart for her to collect upon the ship’s arrival. Part of it reads: “I am just sending you a line to Hobart because it is a long time since you left home. Well you would have seen flying fish, dolphins, whales and everything, but a big crowd of people.” John talks about the train ride from Wellington to Auckland the family will take after arriving by sea. He shares news about the hoards of fisherman on the wharves just yards from his shop, and how his business is growing and men “think nothing of paying five pounds and five shillings for their suits”. The letters show a doting father brimming with excitement about his new life, but also someone that

is missing his family dearly and is counting the days until they are together. Sadly, John Carleton died two years after migrating to Tauranga. He never recovered from a stroke, but his family went on to flourish and create a rich history for themselves. Gabrielle grew up on a dairy farm in Ohauiti and remembers going to the movies at The Odeon on Friday nights. She also recalls Devonport Road was the place to go for shopping. “It was the place to be on a Friday night, it was always open,” says Gabrielle. “You went out with your girlfriends on Friday nights and you bought things and had a neat time.”

More keepsakes

As well as the letters, written in cursive with the paper yellowed from age, Garbielle has needle craft and crochet journals filled with patterns and pointers. The ads in these journals offer everything a woman of the time could need; wool, needlework novelties and haberdashery supplies, as well as stores selling linens and corsets. One ad extols the benefits of Beethams La-rola – “the great emollient for the skin” which “will keep the skin and complexion in a permanently clear and healthy condition”. This ad shows how much has changed in a century but also how little, with ads in 2021 regularly touting products that will give women’s skin a healthy glow and perfect complexion.

Amongst the letters and catalogues is a series of postcards, showing wharves and buildings on The Strand. One postcard shows the wharf laden with butter awaiting shipment and men pushing trollies of cargo, with a horse and cart waiting in the background. Another is an aerial view of the entire street in 1919. A strip of grass and walkway run parallel with the water, with trees evenly planted along the route. In the corner of the photo at No.1 The Strand, The Guinness Bros bond store can be seen, which was used to store imported goods. The 138-yearold building is still standing, and is the oldest commercial building in Tauranga. It is now owned and operated by Sun Media for our offices. The postcard shows how people’s histories can be intertwined in the smallest way without them even Alisha Evans realising it.
