Wings full of fun Tauranga’s Mark Arundel is absolutely addicted to wing foiling. He took up the sports three years ago, after 40 years of windsurfing and kiteboarding. At age 65, he is more in love with the sport than

ever and gets out on his wing foil in Tauranga Moana three to four times a week saying: “There’s nothing quite like it”. Find out about the thrills and spills he encounters

on the water, plus a new challenge to foil to Motiti Island and back that he and fellow local wing foilers are planning on page 8. Photo: John Borren.

PM hits the road

New Zealand Prime Ministers tend to spend a lot of their time on overseas trips, touting for business and selling the country as a tourist destination. Dressed in a pink pant suit and with her trademark grin, Jacinda had her fourth appearance on ‘The Late Show’ with Stephen Colbert, in the United States. The Texas school shooting dominated their interview, in light of New Zealand’s experience with the Christchurch shootings and subsequent gun law reforms. However, they did cover other subjects such as Jacinda’s wedding and “fishy kisses”. If that doesn’t draw the crowds, I’m not sure what will.

Follow that dolphin

New Zealand is turning to artificial intelligence to monitor fishing activity and stamp out illegal and envrionmentally harmful practices. A drone, developed by AI company Qrious and MAUI63, has been using artificial intelligence that can recognise a Māui dolphin and follow it. Dolphins will no doubt find that a little bit creepy, but it’s for their own protection. Similar equipment – using fixed cameras – will eventually be used on 300 fishing vessels and will be able to detect other things like fish dumping. “This will improve trust and accountability in the seafood sector. It will further burnish their credentials,” Oceans and Fisheries Minister David Parker told Newshub this week. Until next week, ngā mihi! daniel@thesun.co.nz

Chairman Doug Leeder says raising awareness about the regional council in urban environments is “really hard”.

Tackling a visibility issue To combat the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s “invisibility”, it is taking a multifaceted approach ahead of the Local Body Election in October. Chairman Doug Leeder says the lack of awareness about regional council is more prominent in urban environments. “If you move out of the urban environment and you move into the rural environment – where we have big investments in terms of flood protection schemes, riparian plantings – everybody knows what the regional council does and is,” says Doug. “The issue of the lack of awareness of what we do, we’ve been talking about for three years and it’s really hard to address in these urban environments.”

Campaign

Doug says the council is going to run a campaign to encourage people to stand as a councillor as well as vote. They will also participate in the Taituarā and Local Government NZ Vote 2022 national campaign, which encourages participation in both elements of the election as well. Doug says the council is going encourage diversity as part of their campaign too. “If you’ve got an interest and are successful to get in, that’s what we need to embrace, because decisions made today are going to affect the next couple of decades,” says Doug. “Especially in the short-term, the next 10

years, about what provision and what services we provide, so you want diversity of views.” Leeder says they are also going to do work around what it means to be a councillor.

Community participation

BOPRC governance manager Yvonne Tatton says they’ve identified community participation as one area where they want to make an impact. “This year, so that people have a broader idea of what it means to be a regional councillor, our website has been updated with useful information about the types of things people should consider before putting their nomination forward.” Doug says being a regional councillor is different than a city or district councillor because of the responsibilities and area they are governing. “Representation and governance falls into two different categories. So, you might be elected by a certain segment of the community, but your responsibility falls to the whole Bay of Plenty. “We deal with the land, water and air as opposed to a very small urban area.” Doug also thinks with TCC not having an election this year more candidates may run for regional council. In 2019 BOPRC didn’t hold an election in the Tauranga constituency because the number of candidates only met 22 7-20 201 the number of vacancies.

Fresh blood joins the Mayoralty race Katikati resident and first-term Western Bay of Plenty councillor James Denyer has joined the race to become the district’s next mayor in October’s Local Body Elections.

And at 46, he’s not shying away from the fact that he’d bring a younger perspective. However, he says his past finance career, community development work and knowledge of local issues also make him a wise choice for

the top job. “I think I have the skills and experience to make a positive impact and provide leadership in a time of change; there’s a lot going on in the Local Government sector at the moment,” says James, who is standing for Mayor and a Katikati-Waihi Beach councillor seat. “You’ve got Resource Management reform, Three Waters, and the ‘Future for Local Government Review’. “I can provide that leadership and a younger perspective, and assist council to be agile in adapting to the changes.”

Corporate finance

“My career background is in corporate finance in London, so I have a strong financial background, which is actually remarkably rare in Local Government, so my skillset is wider than just being a first-term councillor, in which role I also chair two council committees.” James joins fellow WBOP councillor Don Thwaites, 59; Te Puke-based fellow councillor and Deputy Mayor John Scrimgeour; and Te Puke Economic Development Group’s managing director Mark Boyle, 61 in the mayoralty race – and believes he brings a fresher perspective. “People comment that they want someone younger, and I do value diversity on council

and different life experiences – there’s nothing wrong with older candidates – but sometimes you just need someone with a bit more view of the future.” Asked if he’d support amalgamation of WBOPDC with BOP councils, James says it’s worth looking at closer cooperation. “There’s synergies that can be can be gained from that. I think amalgamation at this point will be difficult, partly because you’ve got governance issues. I wouldn’t want to do it while there’s Commissioners at TCC and they’ve also got quite a lot higher amount of debt. “The main concern is how do you maintain the voice for local decision making? WBOP district’s got 50,000-odd people;

Tauranga has 140,000. For a town like Katikati with 5000 residents, people’s voices would just get lost in that.” Three Waters? “Because it’s been mandated by Central Government the council’s role is now to be agile enough to take advantage of opportunities that arise from that.”

Bypass support

And a bypass for Katikati? “I was on the reference group that built the business case with NZTA. The problem is criteria from government has changed a number of times over the years.” However, if elected James would continue to strongly advocate for it. Tauranga’s civic precinct has been given the green light and the full $303 million project will be realised.

two options they would prefer for Te Manawataki o Te Papa. Option one was the full precinct, the other was a scaled back version that included a library and community hub and the civic whare, at a cost of $126.8 million. Council received 628 submissions about the precinct with 450 (72 per cent) in support of option one, compared to 128 (20 per cent) that supported the second option. Fifty people (eight per cent) chose “no option”. During Tuesday’s meeting, project partner Willis Bond's director Wayne Silver warned of escalation costs of $32 million. He said this is due to inflation and building costs, but this would be absorbed by the $303 million budget.

During a Tauranga City Council meeting on Tuesday, the Commissioners unanimously approved delivering Te Manawataki o Te Papa in full – as a single-phased approach. Te Manawataki o Te Papa will occupy the area between Wharf St and Hamilton St in central Tauranga. It includes a library, museum, civic whare – of a venue for council and community meetings – an exhibition space and upgrading Baycourt Community and Arts Centre.

Good understanding

Catalyse transformation

Commission chair Anne Tolley says because of formal submissions and conversations with the community, she is “very comfortable” that the community had a “good understanding” that although the precinct was “a lot of money, it’s a major part of the CBD’s reboot”. Ratepayers will be expected to pay about $152 million of the cost of Te Manawataki o te Papa; the other $150m is expected to come from asset recycling and grants. During TCC’s month-long Annual and LongTerm plan consultation it asked people which of

Commissioner Stephen Selwood says the precinct is an opportunity to catalyse transformation of the whole Ta Papa peninsula – the area from State Highway 29A and Barkes Corner down to the Tauranga Marina. “This is an opportunity for the community right across the whole city to enjoy the CBD as it will be in the future,” says Stephen. Room for Pablo? Meet Pablo – a handsome, happy one year old Labrador-cross looking for a family to take him home. Pablo is very good natured and full of beans, though he does calm right down once he’s said his hellos to everybody. He loves to be active and included in whatever you are doing. He will need an owner who is happy to walk him several times a day or is home with him for part of the day because he does get a little bored and stressed on his own. If you think Pablo would suit your family, give the Tauranga centre a call on 07 5780245, reference number: 544815.

Otūmoetai couple Glynnis and Neville Wilson are celebrating, as they hit the amazing milestone of reaching their 60th wedding anniversary last week.

going back to England as planned, and he wanted to marry a woman but hadn’t asked her yet. “That was my romantic proposal,” Neville laughs.

Lovely wedding

The pair have been married since May 19, 1962, and met each other in September 1959 while Glynnis was travelling to play in a pipe band. Neville first asked Glynnis to dance after they were the last ones on the bench during a night out. Glynnis laughs as she explains she made a few mistakes upon their first interaction. “I asked if he was a Scotsman, when he was really a Yorkshireman; I also assumed he was still in school when he was 20 years old working in Cambridge. “He couldn’t have thought I was too bad though, as he ended up writing to me.” Glynnis received a letter from Norris and laughed as she read that it was written in the early hours after the night they’d met.

The pair were married at the Methodist Church in Te Aroha. Glynnis says they were married in May as it was the quiet season at the Waitoa New Zealand Dairy Company, which is where Neville worked at the time. “It was a lovely wedding, a dry wedding I might add,” says Glynnis. “We had about 80 guests.” Nowadays, the couple live in Otūmoetai, have three children, Craig, 59, Debbie, 57, and David, 53, plus nine grandchildren, and eight greatgrandchildren. “We love them all, and we are so very proud of them,” says Glynnis “I was saying to Glynnis the other day: ‘look what we’ve started; this family is just growing and growing,” says Neville.

Asking the father

No secret

Fast-forward a few years and the couple were planning on how Neville could ask Glynnis’ father for her hand in marriage. Glynnis and her sister asked if their father could drop of them off at the picture theatre, it was then that Neville showed up to her parents’ house on his motorbike to ask the big question. “They kept telling me they’d take me down to the theatre to meet them. I think after I said I was there to see them the penny dropped,” says Neville. “It was Budget night so we listened to that for a while. Then I asked for her hand in marriage. “I knew I was in safe territory as her parents were very lovely to me. I was still very nervous.” Neville proposed to Glynnis by saying he wasn’t

The pair say there’s no secret to a long marriage, but their dedication and commitment to their partnership is a big help. “It’s always been a partnership,” says Neville. “We’ve always had the same bank accounts, always made the decisions together. We didn’t make these rules when we got married, it just happened naturally. “We don’t watch each other’s spending, we don’t get involved in each other’s hobbies and we let each other spend without calculating who spends more.” The pair say it wasn’t always easy, however they’re extremely happy they stuck to their commitment. Glynnis and Neville are now also very involved with St Colomba Presbyterian HIGHLIGHTS Church. Craig, is an elder and session clerk, and Glynnis oversees the prayer chain. 7 The Incubator’s founder and director Simone Anderson would like to see Budget 2022 feed art and culture at its roots.

Feed grassroots art With Budget 2022 feeding $51.4 million into the country’s arts, culture and heritage sector, some Tauranga artists hope the money will be shared with those at grassroots level and not solely be allocated to “higher arts”. The Incubator is a grassroots organisation at Tauranga’s Historic Village and is “a device to grow culture” through art and people. Director and founder Simone Anderson says that most support in the cultural sector is needed for grassroots arts, the developing of creative facilities and programmes and projects that support emerging artists and rangatahi. “[This is] Projects that raise Tauranga’s profile as a centre rich in creative and cultural diversity and identity.” The Incubator’s director of support and project development, Marama Mateparae, says that the funding announced is “obviously a positive”. “We love it when there’s money put aside in the Budget to support the arts and cultural sector...

it has a massive impact on the social fabric of NZ having a strong arts sector,” says Marama. owever, she says benefitting from funds is dependent on which channels the money goes through – whether it is the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Creative NZ or the NZ Film Commission. “Sometimes with those funding distribution agencies is certain sectors, which might be sort of like higher arts or fine arts, tend to see a bigger chunk of that money than grassroots organisations. “I guess over the last lot of funding rounds with Creative NZ I know there was quite a lot that was distributed to Te Ao Maori and to that part of the sector, but it’s seeing it filter down so it still effects kaupapa Maori at grassroots levels as well.” When asked what difference funding from Budget 2022 will make to Tauranga’s cultural sector specifically, Simone says: “[It] depends on whether there is a fair commitment to distribute the funding equitably to reach to the regions – and not just the main centres which historically benefit the most”. ‘There’s nothing quite like it’ Crashing into bronze whaler sharks while out wing foiling doesn’t scare off Tauranga’s Mark Arundel from the enthralling sport.

Mark has been wing foiling for three years, having taken up the sport after 40 years of windsurfing and kiteboarding. Now, at age 65, he is more in love with the sport than ever and gets out on his wing

Mark Arundel is absolutely addicted to wing foiling, having tons of enthusiasm for the wind and water sport.

foil three to four times a week saying: “There’s nothing quite like it”. Wing foiling combines the natural energy of wind and waves to propel riders across the water. “We’ve got a wing in our hands that’s using the wind, and we’ve got a wing in the water that actually soars on the water and uses the energy of the waves and swells at the same time,” says Mark. After having two half knees

replaced, Mark was keen to shift into a wind and water sport that would “avoid banging them around” and he found this in wing foiling. “It’s just an incredibly smooth ride and it feels like flying”.

Speed bumps

Although a smooth ride, the water is not without its obstacles – namely the water’s wildlife. “I’ve run into a decent-sized bronze whaler once,” says Mark. “I didn’t see it until I hit it… I got catapulted into the water and thought: ‘Oops there’s a big shark between me and the board’.” Luckily, the shark seemed unharmed and took off just as quickly as Mark got up on his foil again! Mark says the great thing about wing foiling is that you can foil in a range of wind speeds. “We’re not limited – we can be foiling in winds from as little as 10 knots, about 20km/hr or less, right through to 40 knots and winds that approach 80km/hr.” Wing foiling takes riders far

and wide across the water as well, says Mark. “We look like we’re going in circles in one place – but no, we can go places.”

Sea travellers

“I’ve foiled around Rabbit Island,” says Mark. “So Tay Street, right down to Papamoa Domain and up to the main beach”,” says Mark, who advises to always let someone know your plans and take a cellphone or radio for emergencies. Mark and his fellow local wing foilers plan to do a challenge foiling to Motiti Island and back. “We’ll definitely plan boat support just in case someone breaks something because it’s too far to swim,” says Mark with a laugh. Described as an “amazing way to be with nature and to feel a little bit of adrenaline”, Mark hopes to be wing foiling for another 20 years to come! Debate enthralls many By-election candidates Andrew Hollis, Cameron Luxton, Jan Tinetti and Sam Uffindell mid live-stream.

The livestream of the Tauranga candidates’ debate on Tuesday night was a resounding success with SunLive readers tuning in to hear the candidates’ positions on a series of topics. Four candidates who represent parties that are in Government or who are current elected representatives of the community were invited to attend the live debate at Sun Media. The other eight candidates were sent the same questions and invited to send their answers back to SunLive. Hundreds tuned in to hear what candidates thought of the big issues facing Tauranga, with readers replying by email. “Thank you for hosting the candidates’ debate this evening, it was very entertaining and informative,” says Neil Pollett. “Giving us a chance to know who we are voting for more than ever before.” MC Brenda Horan asked questions of the candidates that covered topics important to Tauranga voters, as prioritised by polling SunLive readers. These included questions on the cost of living, transport, housing, Three Waters, democracy, education and opportunity, community safety and crime, and Tauranga’s

economy and future. National’s Sam Uffindell, Labour’s Jan Tinetti, New Nation’s Andrew Hollis, and ACT’s Cameron Luxton were live in the studio, and ONE Party’s Allan Cawood, Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party’s Christopher Coker, NZ Outdoors & Freedom Party’s Sue Grey, New Conservative’s Helen Houghton, and independent candidates Tony Corbett, Gordon Dickson, Yvette Lamare, and Peter Wakeman invited to reply by email. One SunLive reader, who goes by the moniker ‘Morepork’ wrote: “Thanks to SunLive for making possible one of the best Candidates’ Debates I have ever seen, anywhere in the world. Four bright, intelligent, and informed people, behaving like grown-ups, with an atmosphere of goodwill and impeccably moderated. It was entertaining and informative. I piped it through HDMI from the laptop to the big screen, invited the neighbours over and we all watched it with interest. There was much food for discussion and thought and it has definitely moved me towards my final decision on who I will vote for.” The 90-minute debate can be viewed at: www.sunlive.co.nz by clicking ‘Election Debate’.

‘Status quo must go’ says One Party candidate Tauranga by-election candidate – ONE Party co-leader – Allan Cawood says that the “status quo must go” and “the left and right are two wings of the same bird”.

The permanent Tauranga resident says if elected as the city’s MP, he will offer an effective opposition to this government. Allan is one of 12 candidates running in the Tauranga by-election, to take place on June 18. Fellow candidates are: Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party’s Christopher Coker, independent candidates Tony Corbett and Gordon Dickson, NZ Outdoors and Freedom Party’s Sue Grey, New National Party’s Andrew Hollis, New Conservative’s Helen Houghton, independent Yvette Lamare, ACT New Zealand’s Cameron Luxton, Labour Party’s Jan Tinetti, National Party’s Sam Uffindell and independent

Peter Wakeman. Allan says he’s not afraid to speak out against injustice, wrong-doing and illconsidered decisions.

Here to serve

“I challenge entrenched narratives and I am able to think for myself. I will be working hard for the people of Tauranga.” “My view is that I am is here to serve the community, not myself and to remember those who voted me in.” Allan is acutely concerned about the cost-of-living crisis, which is worsening and affecting everybody in Tauranga. “ONE Party will immediately provide some relief by removing GST on both food and fuel. “This government has also allowed our national debt to reach unprecedented levels – a debt which our children will inherit.” Allan and the ONE Party support local

manufacturing from natural resources, thus increasing employment opportunities and boosting the local economy. He also thinks Tauranga infrastructure is inadequate, “particularly the roading”. “Time and fuel is wasted as commuters sit bumper-tobumper on congested roads. “I will be the voice advocating for special funding to address our much-needed infrastructure requirements.” Read this story in full at: www. sunlive.co.nz

The Seasons method of teaching takes you from the very basics up to an intermediate level, Your tutor is extremely supportive and everyone is encouraged to follow their own style of expression. The other thing we focus on is the

value of time, it seems that most other classes run for 1-2 hours and for 8-10 weeks. We prefer that our students have time to settle in and so we make sure our classes are 3 hours, with refreshments, and run for 14 sessions so that students can really take time to explore their new found skills.

We Make It Easy For You.

Even if you have never picked up a brush before, we will guide you through to make it easy and fun! On completing the course you will have at least 10 pieces of original art. This is an extremely enjoyable way to develop your creative side, and really enjoy the next few months.

• Especially Designed for Beginners to Intermediate • Step-By-Step Curriculum Makes Learning Easy • Sessions available: 1.30 - 4.30pm, or 6 - 9pm • All In-Class Materials & Refreshments are Supplied • 3 Hour class with Qualified Tutor • Only $49 per week

Now You Can Paint & Draw People, Pets & Places.

Places Are Limited.

Over the 3 month course students explore four different media: Sketching, Oil Pastels, Watercolour & Acrylics. Discover how to paint faces, figures, friends, family and stunning landscapes. You’ll also learn the artists’ secrets to create beautiful pieces of original art. Imagine the delight when you present your loved ones with personal portraits, or the pleasure of capturing your pet’s image on canvas. One thing is for sure, your friends and family will be absolutely amazed and delighted at what you’ve achieved.

To maintain a high standard of tuition, our classes are kept small, averaging 20 students per class, so available places are strictly limited.

We’ve found that it doesn’t take long for people to bond as a group and in a short time, we have teams of new friends organising to either complete assignments together or have a social trip out to art galleries and such.

The Weekend Sun

More relief for families We’ve just released this year’s Budget, which sets out the next steps in our plan to build a secure future for New Zealand. This includes a ‘cost of living’ package, which will help ease the pressure for people here in Waiariki. Right now, the fundamentals of our economy are strong. Our strong health response protected our economy through Covid-19, and we’ve pulled through better than almost anywhere else in the world. But we know that, despite these positive indicators, things are tough right now for many families, as global inflation affects prices here at home. That’s why in this year’s Budget, we’ve included a comprehensive ‘cost of living’ package. This includes a new temporary payment to help Kiwis earning up to $70,000 a year with higher food and power bills. It also includes an extension

to our fuel tax cut, reduced road user charges and half-price public transport for further two months; and we’re permanently halving public transport fares for people on low incomes. Alongside these measures, we’re taking action on supermarkets to make sure Kiwis are paying a fair price at the checkout. It is important we do what we can to take the hard edges off the global factors affecting us here in New Zealand, and these practical measures will help families here in Waiariki and across the country. Of course, as we do this, we’ll continue to carefully manage the books – and our careful fiscal management means we return to surplus quicker than National did after the global financial crisis. There’s a lot more in the Budget that will benefit people here in Waiariki. I’d encourage you to check out the Budget at: www. labour.org.nz/budget202

Vote Tauranga, please vote! Early voting in the Tauranga By-election starts next Saturday, June 4 – and it’s important people get out and vote. Following Simon Bridges’ retirement after almost 14 years of dedicated service, Tauranga gets to choose who will best represent them in Parliament going forward. Simon has decided to spend more time with his young family. He can be proud of his work for Tauranga and New Zealand. I wish Natalie and Simon well. New Zealand faces big challenges, many people tell me they feel the country is going backwards. Life for hardworking people in Rotorua and Te Puke is getting harder – certainly harder than they were promised at the last election. I’ve spent time on the campaign trail in Tauranga during the previous weeks, meeting voters with National Party Candidate Sam Uffindell. Tauranga people tell us they are

Friday 27 May 2022

worried too. Crime is up. Gang memberships has doubled during the past four years – they now outnumber local police by two to one. Ram-raids, intimidation and troublemakers at bus stops – people no longer feel safe in their homes or in the streets. There is a cost of living crisis – too many families now face tough choices over paying bills or feeding the kids. People are trapped in their cars because of local road congestion and they’re worried about Labour’s Three Waters asset grab and co-governance – National opposes these policies. By-elections are important – it’s important that Tauranga people have their say. It’s important that you get out and vote.

Defibrillators for Bay of Plenty rugby clubs Katikati, Te Teko and Ōpōtiki Rugby clubs are some of the first rugby clubs in the country to be gifted a heart defibrillator as part of a new initiative. These three Bay of Plenty Rugby clubs each have a player that is part of the NZ Rugby Foundation as a result of an injury sustained from rugby;

Phil Wharekawa from Katikati rugby club, Kerry Southee from Te Teko rugby club, and Kerrin Tilley from Ōpōtiki ruby club. Katikati was the first club to be presented a special plaque with the defibrillator at their home game last weekend. The New Zealand Rugby

Foundation has set a lofty goal of having a heart defibrillator on the outside of every rugby club in Aotearoa – and already a life has been saved. Defibrillators are known to increase the survival rate of a person by more than 44 per cent when used within three-five minutes of a cardiac arrest.

Changes to free fares for all school students on Bayhopper buses Due to safety concerns around bus users and drivers, from June 4 free school fares will now only be available from 7am - 9am and from when school finishes to 5pm Monday to Friday. There are no longer any free bus services for school students during the weekend.

Māori Party owes Tauranga an apology

A Western BOP nightmare… Re: ‘Council eyes diverse future’, page 4, (The Weekend Sun, May 13). I was gobsmacked to read that Western Bay of Plenty District Council CEO John Holyoake wants to gerrymander the local elections in the interests of what he calls diversity. He claims the same should apply to staffing. If you start appointing people other than on merit, then things are not going to work out as well as appointing the best person for the job – regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, religion, culture, disability or sexual orientation etc. Do that and you do not need a diversity department. He then hit a new low, disparaging what he claimed as “the privileges around being wealthy and white”. Remarks that stoop to racism and attacks on the successful should not be part of a council CEO’s vocabulary. It seems he needs reminding of the words of Martin Luther King Jr: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character”. Mr Holyoake's dream looks more like a Western BOP nightmare. Richard Prince, Welcome Bay. Editor’s note: The Weekend Sun last week asked Western Bay of Plenty District Council CEO John Holyoake and Western Bay of Plenty Mayor Garry Webber to reply to letters on this topic. They declined.

When Māori Party president Che Wilson claimed Tauranga was mentioned as a “hotspot” of white supremacy in a Department of Internal Affairs report, I noticed.

Our houses are well behind the times...

I have been thinking about house construction methods and economy lately and I concluded that we are behind the times comparative to other industries. Our typical frame house construction is so very 19th Century and why haven’t we progressed to more efficiency? The idea of handbuilding on-site in all weathers bringing industrial scale amounts of heavy materials by truck through residential neighbourhoods is really inefficient and just bad practice. Building could occur with less timber, less waste, less energy if built in controlled environment in computerised assembly systems using less labour and increasing quality. Builders would be a new creature skilled in design and in systems. Plumbing and electrical and electronic services would be integral. Water harvesting, electricity generation and waste treatment all built in. On-site work would be confined to prefab foundations only. A house could be built in a week. Installed on-site in a day. Consenting would be systematic too and much cheaper. Okay, a bit 21st Century thinking I know, but? GL Hodgson, Bethlehem.

As a husband and father of “women of colour”, I was concerned. It turned out I needn’t be. Che’s claim was untrue… as he later withdrew the allegation. There was no mention of Tauranga in the report. It turned out to be a made-up claim to justify why the Māori Party wasn’t standing a candidate in the Tauranga by-election. But if you do a little digging, you may find there are other reasons why they aren’t standing, and they have nothing to do with racism. Suppose the only reason the Māori Party didn’t stand a candidate in Tauranga was because it is too racist. In that case, they must feel the same way about Rotorua and the East Coast, too, because they didn’t stand candidates in those general seats in 2020. In fact, they didn’t stand a single candidate in a general electorate in New Zealand at the last election! By-elections are expensive; how are their finances? Pretty poor, it turns out. They only received $13,000 in donations last year from across the country. That’s less

than half the New Conservatives received and about 10 per cent of what New Zealand First received; neither are in Parliament. What are their chances of being elected? They received 155 votes in the Tauranga electorate in 2020, so not great. If it is a question of city-wide racism, then why have Winston Peters and Simon Bridges held the Tauranga seat for 35 out of the last 38 years? Instead of being honest and citing their position of not standing in general electorates, poor finances, and poor electoral performance, they stereotyped an entire city. In doing so, they became exactly the thing they are supposed to be railing against – prejudiced. Is there racism in Tauranga? Unfortunately, yes, there is; my family has experienced it and not just from European people either. Fortunately, it has been rare during the past 18 years compared to the love and acceptance my family feel from the people of this beautiful city and at my own marae. We love living here and we love locals. To single out Tauranga compared to other cities that equally struggle with racism was a deeply offensive, politically cynical, and prejudiced move by the Māori Party. They owe Tauranga an apology or risk being compared to others who stereotype for political gain.

praise and honour. Six weeks ago Passover, Unleaven Bread and First Fruits showed how to obtain eternal life through the death and resurrection of Yeshua HaMashiach (Jesus the Messiah). In two weeks Shavuot/Pentecost, we celebrate God’s generosity of His provisions and giving us the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit), 10 days after Yeshua returned to Heaven. Wowallelujah! He is with us always and empowers us to do what Yeshua did and more – if you let Him. Is it just for Jews? No, as YHWH intended we share this time of joy with all nations and people. Join us on June 4 (Shabbat) and Sunday, June 5 for God’s fourth of seven ‘Appointed Annual Times’ of rememberance and celebration. Rav Joel and Sharon van Ameringen, Beth-El Messianic Family.

Jocelyn Jacobs is setting up shop for a Tauranga women’s shed on Monday evenings at The Historic Village.

Tauranga Men’s Shed members are breaking their foundational rule. Women have been allowed inside to have a shed of their own – at least on Monday evenings. The new women’s shed, operating out of the men’s shed in The Historic Village, is the latest addition to DIY Sheds Aotearoa Trust, founded by Jocelyn Jacobs.

‘A Women’s Shed’

Jocelyn says the trust is a national body that is focused on Rotorua and Tauranga. “It’s not the trust’s intention to run these sheds, just assist in their set-up and be driven by local people,” says Jocelyn. “I moved to Tauranga nearly three years ago and was at the Tauranga Men’s Shed trying to get a tool fixed. “David Harper, who was running

the shed, said Tauranga desperately needed a shed for women, as women were always asking to join their shed. “He said to me it was in their best interest to help. They gave us a copy of their health and safety management plan, which got us across the line with our three-year lease agreement for the Rotorua shed. “I was actively looking for a building for Tauranga until two months ago, when I dropped in at the men’s shed and met the new chairman, Paul Christensen, who said that women were always asking for a space of their own, and when it could be available. Men’s shed members, not used to the idea of women utilising their space, have been supportive of Jocelyn’s project. “Paul told me that the men’s shed wants us to succeed. They

gave us Monday nights to utilise all their tools, equipment and some of their wood.”

Interest in DIY

Jocelyn says the community reception to the shed has also been wonderful – from iwi leaders, council workers, community groups and churches. “Research and the Covid-19 pandemic has proven that there is a need for community sheds that are inclusive and unique to the communities and the people that run them.” Jocelyn adds that her shed, although initially set up for women, also takes men and people of all ages above 15. “We’re still in the early stages of setting up. Our biggest need at the moment is for experienced volunteers who can supervise and teach the use of the

tools and equipment, it doesn’t matter if they’re a woman or a man. “[The] Biggest needed is people who want to be part of the organising committee, along with shed supervisors. “The interest has been slow and steady and I have no doubt in my mind that the DIY shed Tauranga is going to be hugely succesful.” For more information or to register interest in the Tauranga women’s shed, head to the DIY Shed Aotearoa Facebook page, or contact Jocelyn on: 021 065 8329.

Have a say on Building Code changes Consultation on proposed changes to the Building Code to ensure new buildings better protect the safety of New Zealanders opened this month, with submitters having until July 1 to have their say.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment opened the consultation on proposed changes to the Building Code’s acceptable solutions and verification methods – which cover plumbing and drainage, protection from fire, and structural stability of hollowcore floors – on May 2. Final decisions on changes will be made later this year. Manager building performance and engineering Dave Gittings as New Zealand’s central building regulator, MBIE consults on updates to the Building Code “to ensure we are keeping pace with innovation, current construction methods and the needs of our modern society”. “We update the Building Code every year to support NZ to deliver safe, healthy and durable buildings. This

year we are looking to update some key areas, which will help make new builds even safer and healthier for our whānau and communities.” Proposed changes for plumbing and drainage look to limit the allowable lead content in certain plumbing products, reduce risk of hot water scalding injuries, and protect potable water supplies. Dave says maximum hot water delivery temperatures in NZ are higher than in other countries “which leads to an increased risk of tap water scalds”. “This is why we are proposing to lower the maximum hot water delivery temperatures for most buildings from 55 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius. “ As part of this year’s update, MBIE also proposes to improve the level of fire safety for our buildings. “As the demand for multi-unit dwellings continues to increase, we are looking to support this type of construction with simple solutions for the associated fire risks… This includes proposing a simple solution to improving fire safety by requiring interconnected smoke alarms throughout new homes. More information on changes are on MBIE’s website.

It all started with the desire to improve New Zealand’s tea break – gone are the days of cheap, dusty teabags. When you take a tea break, you deserve the best, and Webster’s Tea provides delicious, sustainable, fresh tea for you to indulge in. “People are wanting more from their tea, and we’ve brought the emphasis back to quality and taste,” says Webster’s Tea’s Mark Webster. Whether you’re a fan of green, black, herbal or rooibos, Webster’s Tea has something for everyone. And with their recent move to Clark Rd in Te Puna, it’s now more convenient than ever to enjoy a good quality cuppa. The tea company moved and opened their doors in February this year after outgrowing their old space. “We’re now open to the public and we’re excited to continue exploring

the idea of improving people’s tea break,” says Mark. But they carry more than just tea – they’ve got a range of essential accessories as well, from tea pots to complimentary chocolates, books to tea cups and more. And, if you purchase a bulk bag of tea, the team at Webster’s Tea will throw in a stylish storage tin for free. Their curated collection caters to all tea-lovers, but Mark says their Earl Grey is their best-seller. “It’s almost dessert-like, it’s a real favourite.” But, if you’re looking for something to spice up your winter, Mark recommends being bold and trying their turmeric blend. Their store on Clark Rd is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am-3pm, but if you can’t make it down in person, they also sell their terrific teas online.

Joyce, and her 102 years of life Not many people get to enjoy a parent’s 102nd birthday, but Bellevue resident Raewyn Scrivener got to do just that recently.

Mum Thelma Joyce Cooke (nee Fausett) – a granddaughter of some of New Zealand’s first Irish settlers in 1865 – turned 102 on April 26 at her residence in Blockhouse Bay, Auckland.

‘Joyce’ for short, an ex-Mount Maunganui resident, grew up in Ararimu and is of Irish and Danish descent. “She’s the granddaughter of John and Sarah Fausett from Northern Ireland, Enniskillen,” says Raewyn.

Queenie

Joyce went to school on a horse named ‘Queenie’. She played piano, mandolin, and violin. She was a

seamstress sewing uniforms for the war effort. Then she met and married the late Ray Cooke from Papakura. “He was a soldier, champion cyclist, boxer trainer cabinetmaker, and hand-craft fret worker. He worked for Sunny Wall at the Mount furniture shop through the 1950s,” says Raewyn. The couple had two children – Garry and Raewyn – and today Joyce has numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Garry and Raewyn grew up at the Mount – when the stretch from Mauao to Papamoa was pines dotted with houses – after the family moved there in 1950.

Abulance driver

Joyce, on her engagement to Ray Cooke in 1938.

Joyce became superintendent of St John’s nursing cadets, and drove an ambulance from 1954-1962. A voluntary effort, her name is on the wall of Papamoa’s ambulance station. “She played tennis and badminton, made all clothes for our family – and made ice cream and chocolate. She also had a great garden at our house on Campbell Rd, with lots of veggies, fruit trees, and chooks for eggs,” says Raewyn. “She was also well-known for doing home hair perms, especially in Matapihi. She’d go to people’s homes with her equipment.” Raewyn says Joyce, who lives in Peacehaven Rest

Thelma Joyce Cooke enjoys her surprise 102 birthday party, with daughter Raewyn Scrivener, Pacific Elvis impersonator Johnny Angel, and world-renowned Country music fiddler Marian Burns.

Home in Auckland, still crochets blankets for the Romanian orphans. “She also still knits, play cards and Scrabble. She’s won seven medals in numerous events, including singing, in the home.” Raewyn put on a surprise party with the Pacific Elvis (Johnny Angel) impersonator and worldrenowned Country music fiddler Marian Burns for Joyce’s 102nd birthday back in April. This year a book has been published on Joyce’s family titled ‘The Fausetts, Svendsen, Hyland, and Cooke’ by Toni Anne. Copies can be purchased from Raewyn on: 021 207 1769.

Perhaps I have become cynical but the whole ‘music biz’ seems such a mess these days it’s hard to know what will help. But – hey – it’s a clear frosty morning and I’m not going to get hung up today on the fact that the most common thing I hear from musicians is they see no future in recording since there is no way anymore to recoup the cost. It’s a sad fact that a business model where nothing is coming in is not really sustainable. I hear of bands playing live so they can save money to record songs that they will then essentially give away. You can’t do that forever... I fear we are about to return to a similar wilderness as the seventies and eighties, where most Kiwi bands lacked access to recording and thus most music was lost to the mists of history. At least live music has returned. I’ve got two gigs from next week, then we’ll check out a couple more shows from Matariki’s Jazz Festival. Next week? Both these shows are happening Friday, June 3; each very different so they don’t really clash...

Somewhere, at a secret location, Georgia Lines is playing a solo show in support of her latest single ‘Leave Behind’. It’s a laid-back slice of delicate electro-pop for which you can see two versions on YouTube, the official video and a live performance from Parachute Studio which is rather lovely. Georgia played at the Auckland War Memorial Museum last week and is off to Dunedin and Christchurch next week before returning here where her Tauranga show will be a chance to hear

And, as I promised, let’s move forward to Matariki weekend or just before it in fact, since the Port of Tauranga 59th National Jazz Festival is taking an early bow with a Baycourt concert on Monday, June 20, which I reckon will be one of the unheralded gems of the festival. It features the assembled judges from the National Youth Jazz Competition, and since they’re judges you can rest assured that they’re about as good as you get. It’s a mouth-watering line-up, featuring Rodger Fox on trombone, saxes from Eilish Wilson and Dave Wilson, and Ben Wilcock on keys. They’ll be joined by the legendary ‘Cairo’ rhythm section of Max Stowers (bass) and Mickey Ututaonga (drums). At $25 tickets are a steal. The other show I’d like to mention is ‘Love Miles ‘n’ Chet’ on the Friday, June 24, a show celebrating the music of two of the world’s greatest trumpet players. As a Chet Baker lover this is going to be the bee’s knees, especially since the trumpeter is Wellington’s Geoff Culverwell, who is a superb player. Selling toys and raising spirits After being burgled earlier in the year, the Otūmoetai Toy Library is proving they can’t be knocked down. The group is hosting a fundraiser at the St John Anglican Church this Saturday, May 28, from 2pm-4pm, which will have a wide range of quality toys on sale. People are advised to bring cash, along with a bag to carry the toys they are purchasing. Bay’s Nepalese community mark momentous climb Bay of Plenty’s Nepalese community is gearing up to celebrate the relationship between Nepal and New Zealand – and they’re inviting Kiwis to join them this Sunday, May 29.

WHAT’S ON

International Everest Day is an initiative to commemorate the anniversary of the ascent of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. “We want to pay respect to these two legends,” says Non-Resident Nepali Association vice president Bhakta Siwahang. “They succeeded in climbing the highest mountain and making a

relationship between our countries, so it’s our duty to acknowledge that.” The Nepalese people have a longstanding relationship with NZ thanks to Sir Ed. This year, the anniversary of the record-setting climb 69 years ago is being commemorated with an event this Sunday, May 29, from 4pm at Papamoa Sports & Recreation Centre. “We’ve invited local dignitaries. There will be short speeches, performances and then attendees will enjoy a typical Nepalese meal,” says Bhakta. “Our food is similar to Indian cuisine, so we’ll be cooking daal, curry, lamb and chicken curry with pickles.” He estimates around 600 Nepalese

people live in the Bay of Plenty. “We try to hold onto our culture, but I can see a lot is getting lost,” says Bhakta. “I have been here for 20 years and still speak Nepalese as well as my own ethnic language, Rai, which is one of the native languages spoken in east Nepal. “My three boys were born here in NZ and just speak English. We want to show the next generation our culture.” The International Everest Day celebration at Papamoa is expected to attract more than 200 people, making it one of the larger gatherings in the country. The main event is being attended by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern at Debbie Griffiths Parliament on May 31.

Freediving Unit

Here’s a fun addition to any boating adventure. This 12 volt electric hookah style dive compressor allows the user to swim below the surface for extended periods of time. The Watergames “Jack” runs on any 12 volt battery on the surface, either aboard a boat or pulled along in a dinghy. The depth achievable depends on personal fitness etc and how much demand for air, but 10 to 12 feet is probably about average for most people. Leaner breathers may go deeper for longer but even in the first couple of metres of water depth there is plenty to see and do. This unit is almost new, used a couple of times for inspecting under the hull of our boat. It is ideal for checking props and minor maintenance under water. We found it easier and quicker than suiting up in scuba gear. We also used it a couple of times to catch crays, with the unit and battery pulled along in an inflatable dinghy. It is quite a feeling of freedom to be able to stay below the surface without the bulk and drama of a scuba tank. We’ve sold the catamaran now and the Jack, still in virtually new pristine condition, is surplus to requirements. It is complete with one regulator and about 20 feet of air supply tube. The unit simply attaches to a 12 volt battery with alligator clips. It comes in a tidy zip up carry bag. This is a quality product, unlike some of the cheap and nasty versions and new is worth around $1000.
