23 June 2022, Issue 1115

For the first time in Aotearoa, Matariki will officially be celebrated as a rā whakatā ā-ture (public holiday) tomorrow, June 24. The Bay of Plenty is jam-packed with events tomorrow and this weekend that will celebrate Matariki. See The Sun’s Matariki event wrap on page 5.

Fairhaven School students Mihinarangi Caldwell, Te Korowai Hiina and Te Waiari Ronaki have been creating Matariki costumes in class ahead of attending today’s Te Kete Matariki Education Day named ‘Te Kīwai Mauī’, where hundreds of kids from across their community will “share in the kaupapapa of Matariki”. See their story on page 12.

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars that rises in mid-winter – and, for many Māori, heralds the start of the New Year. It is an opportunity for all people of Aotearoa to come together and reflect on the tau (year) that has passed, celebrate the present, and plan for the future.

The big bang theory Ngā mihi o te tau hau. Well whanau, our oppressive, overbearing government has forced another public holiday on us and now we must rise up and consider what this means – or not, if you feel like a sleep-in. Despite this obvious tyranny, I don’t like to miss an occasion, but feel we all need to be on the same song sheet. There is a real risk that those unfamiliar with the significance of this event will act inappropriately. The last thing we need is people scattering chocolate eggs all over the place, popping stockings above the scorching log burner or chasing confused turkeys around the backyard, dressed like Freddy Krueger. This isn’t America, it’s Aotearoa and the beauty of Matariki is that you do have the flexibility to celebrate how you like, within some key themes.

Matariki herself does what all good parents do – look out for her tamariki, encourage, support and supervise them so they are the best they can be. The main themes are kai, whanau, good health and caring for the environment.

Not-so-bright idea

Do it your way

There are quite a few legends of Matariki, but one of the more popular ones is ‘The legend of Matariki and the six sisters – Te ono o Matariki’ – which you’re able to read at the Te Papa Museum of New Zealand website: www.tepapa.govt.nz/legend-matarikiand-six-sisters In this particular legend, Matariki, which is known as Pleiades to European stargazers, is the mother of the other stars in the cluster – each of which have their own attributes. It’s a bit like the Spice Girls really. You have Tupu-ā-nuku who is the gardening one; Tupu-ā-rangi loves to sing, Waipunarangi accompanies her grandmother to the waters – the oceans, lakes and rivers – where she prepares the children of Tangaroa (God of the sea) to feed the people; Waitī and Waitā are Matariki’s twins; and Ururangi, who reminds us that a good attitude is always key to success.

years after the moa went extinct and about the same time Māori were forming themselves into the iwi groups we are familiar with today. So, they are a bit old, and as a big fan of making my own stars, I feel if there was ever an opportunity to move Guy Fawkesstyle shenanigans away from the beginning of the fire season to a more suitable part of the year, now is the time. Instead of children having to wait until 10pm for their half-cut parents to set off explosives, they could do it at 6pm instead. Genius!

The Matariki (Pleiades) star cluster.

Star-crossed

As it just so happens, it coincides with my wedding anniversary this year, so two star-crossed lovers will be sitting out on the deck on a frosty night counting the sparkles in each other’s eyes. Or possibly watching replays of ‘Grand Designs’. What would make this national celebration even cooler though would be fireworks. I know this is a bit of a side issue, and I didn’t see any mention of fireworks in the various stories of Matariki but I’m sure that would have been a thing had they been around then. The Matariki star cluster we are looking at is about 440 light years away – that’s 100 years before Abel Tasman clapped his beady eyes on New Zealand, 100

Sadly, it was reported earlier this month that the mātauranga (knowledge) Māori group set up to guide the Government on the creation of the Matariki public holiday have advised that fireworks do not align with one of the core values, which is Mana Taiao or environmental awareness. Fireworks are frowned upon by the experts because they cause noise and light pollution and rubbish. This sounds like pretty much every party, concert and major event ever staged and I doubt if Ururangi would have been a fan of the no-fireworks policy. While it’s a massive buzz-kill for all those pyromaniacs out there, some councils have gone ahead with the big bang theory anyway and are planning to hold fireworks or light shows – notably the Wellington City Council, albeit with the support of mana whenua. However you celebrate it, this new public holiday is a welcome addition to the annual calendar – it’s a time to remember those who are no longer here in person, and share time with those who are still with us. It’s also a great time to set a Matariki resolution, especially if the ones you set on January 1 haven’t gone so well. Ngā mihi o te tau hau.

Compared with other star clusters, Matariki is close to Earth – but it’s still 440 light years away. Fire’s big problem ‘Resourcing issues’ from Fire and Emergency New Zealand are leading some Tauranga firefighters to work 70 hours per week, according to Tauranga’s representative at the NZ professional firefighters union, Mike Swanson. The issues are also causing local firefighters to have prolonged exposure to carcinogens such as smoke, and using outdated equipment that is “sometimes older than the firefighters using it”. Mike, who represents the Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Greerton fire stations at the union, says that FENZ has not recruited enough staff to cover the standard vacancies they get. “It’s things like secondment, sick leave during winter, and public holidays. The Government keeps adding public holidays but doesn’t give us the staff to cover them,” says Mike. “Some of our staff are working 70 hours-plus a week. When you work that amount of time, you are subjected to a lot more trauma. Working those sort of hours, your mental health suffers, families suffer, marriages suffer, and you are exposed to much more cancer-causing agents made by fires.

Broken culture

“When it comes to wintertime, you get a few more illnesses than usual, and there is fewer staff to cover these positions. “It’s even things like when trucks break down. When that happens, sometimes the backup truck is older than the firefighters on it. “Big metropolitan cities are experiencing these issues even more, but they are definitely affecting us here in the Bay of Plenty.”

National Party’s Fire and Emergency spokesperson Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller says the resourcing issues are “continuing to mount” and a number of fire stations across the country are “unable to stay open because crews are too stretched”. “FENZ has a broken culture. The men and women who put themselves on the line to protect our families, homes and communities are desperate for support, and FENZ seems unable to respond. The unfolding debacle is quickly becoming a farce that is putting firefighters and our communities at risk.”

Right places Mike wants to see funding “go to the right places” in order for these issues to subside. “Firefighter numbers haven’t been adjusted since the 1980s. The population has increased a lot in that time. FENZ has adjusted these numbers in the national office, and added about 300 extra people there. There’s lots more backroom people, and not a lot more ‘front room’ people. We need more professional career firefighters on the ground. “Staff are having to make tactical decisions they wouldn’t normally have to. Typically, entering a burning house we have two people monitor conditions outside while two people go inside. “If we only have three firefighters on a truck, we have to wait for more resources arrive before going inside. In these situations, seconds count.” Mike makes it clear the issues local firefighters are experiencing are “no different” to other parts of NZ, and it is “not a criticism of Tauranga’s local management”. “We are very supportive of our local management, and our volunteers. We just wish these things were addressed on a national basis.” FENZ declined to comment on the situation.

Ready to work

Tauranga MP Sam Uffindell and his wife Julia. Photo: Rosalie Liddle Crawford.

Tauranga’s new MP Sam Uffindell has had a cracking start to his new role, arriving in Wellington on Monday, fresh from his win in the city’s by-election. The Weekend Sun caught up with him ahead of his flight to the nation’s capital. “I’m looking forward to getting down to Wellington, finding out where the kitchen and bathroom is, meeting the caucus on Tuesday and playing whatever part I’m asked to play,” says Sam. Preliminary election results show Uffindell has 10,931 votes with Labour List MP Tinetti losing to him with 4893 votes, a margin of 6038.

Tackling crime Sam is looking forward to representing his constituents and is focussed on what he campaigned on. “Tackling crime and gangs, address our roading situation and cost of living, restoring local democracy. I’m looking forward to representing Tauranga, getting down to Wellington and being a hardworking person on Christopher Luxon’s high performing National team.” Expected home from Wellington tonight, he’s thankful for his wife Julia’s family living only 10 minutes up the road. “That’s crucial for the stability of our household and making sure everything runs well at home.” He and Julia are friends with BOP MP Todd Muller and his wife Michelle, so already have a fair idea of what’s involved with the job. He also received helpful advice from Simon Bridges. “Sam deserves to be really chuffed by his big win,” says Simon. “It was a great result and his family will rightly feel proud. “I think Sam has the right experience and values to make an excellent MP. Down in Wellington, the trick is to get the balance between Parliamentary work and local focus right. Both are important

Meet us in your neighbourhood and tell us what matters to you

but in the early years being highly visible locally and learning what issues matter to locals is vital to long-term achievement.”

Central part of WBOP Simon says while being an electorate MP anywhere is a significant privilege, there are a few things about representing Tauranga that make it special. “The Tauranga seat represents that central part of the Western BOP and so always receives a bit more attention than the surrounding electorates. “In addition, the area has consistently in recent decades been one of and sometimes the highestgrowth centre in NZ. Being a leader in a high growth city requires extra care, skill and attention. “I think Sam is a fast learner and will handle all this well. I wish Sam every success,” says Simon. “I’m incredibly grateful to Simon and Maree Brookes for establishing such a strong army of people,” says Sam. One goal for the first 100 days is to introduce a member’s bill giving Police greater power to stop gang convoys. “I’d also like to try and get together with people in the city, some of the commercial building holders, council, university and other folk to see where we can collaborate and make Tauranga a tech capital, and bring start-ups into the CBD.

Unique value “I think we have such a unique value proposition here with our fantastic coastline and city. Why wouldn’t people want to come here? We have a lot of leverage with our horticulture and agriculture business so it makes sense to get them in here.” Sam’s also reached out to the non-government organisations across the city. “I’d like to see more government support for those doing effective work in the community. Let’s empower them.”

At dawn tomorrow, a new Ātea-ā-Rangi will be opened on the summit of Mauao, signifying the start of Matariki – and the first ever public holiday in Aotearoa to celebrate the Māori New Year. As a special space to perform rituals, the Āteaā-Rangi will include a unique sculpture at its centre that will incorporate touch stones and a star compass, says master navigator Jack Thatcher. The “radiating rings” of the star compass will indicate constellations, mountains and islands significant to Aotearoa. “People will be able to see on the star compass the special places that have some meaning to the indigenous peoples, but also to the stories that almost every indigenous race around the world has – so that includes everyone,” says Jack. The highest touchstone of the sculpture will be a piece of pounamu, gifted by the Ngāi Tahu iwi. “People will touch the stone and add their life force into that, which also helps with enabling the people to feel a stronger affinity to the mountain itself,” says Jack.

‘The mothers can’t get sick’ A Tauranga nurse and mother-of-three is urging other young women to do self-breast exams, ask doctors questions, and to investigate alternative treatment options following her own terminal breast cancer diagnosis.

Nurse of 14 years, Haley Nienow wants to use her own discoveries with her cancer treatment to help others. Photo: supplied. Left photo: Steve Brown.

Being diagnosed with breast cancer last year came as a huge shock to Haley Nienow, now 36, who has been a nurse for 14 years. A CT scan and MRI mid-July 2021 revealed Haley has Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, an aggressive form of breast cancer that is terminal. Haley says the oncologist told her: “There’s no treatment available, so the only treatment we can do is to hopefully slow the spread”. “The oncologist basically just told me to put my affairs in order – ‘you’re going to die’,” says Haley.

Combined approach

Haley’s type of cancer feeds off estrogen. From her medical knowledge and nursing career, Haley knows “ovaries produce 80 per cent of estrogen”. “I said [to the oncologist] ‘Why aren’t we removing my ovaries right away?’” Haley says she received pushback on this from her oncologist, who instead initially put her on hormone medication. “It was quite difficult to get my oncologist to really collaborate a treatment plan.

“The initial lump was in my breast but spread quickly to my lymph nodes, a tumor on my liver, innumerable tumors all over both lungs, and three spots on my spine,” says Haley, who knows time is of the essence in treating cancers. While on the surgical wait list, Haley wanted to be proactive about her diagnosis and researched alternative treatments she could combine with Western medical treatments. “I got in touch with the Godfrey Clinic and started these high-dose vitamin C infusions.” For this, she would have 90g of Vitamin C twice-weekly and also incorporate supplements and homeopathic remedies. In December Haley was able to have her ovaries removed to cease hormone supply to her cancers. “In January the scan just showed fabulous results – the original tumour in my breast went from 21mm down to 14mm – the cancer in my lymph nodes were all gone,” says Haley. However, with Vitamin C infusions costing $700 a week, Haley cut back due to financial strain.

“I feel like I’ve been put on this journey to do something bigger – using my nursing skills, using my terminal diagnosis for good”

Haley Nienow and her children Lauren, Millie, Rhys and husband Tony are desperate for time together as a family following Haley’s cancer diagnosis.

we won’t survive,” says Haley who asks: “Why isn’t there any option for terminally ill people?” “Tony has to work extra-long hours to ensure we have enough income to live,” says Haley. Moreover, this has taken a toll on her family as there is little time for rest and family time, leaving her and Tony constantly exhausted. Although Haley has her hard days, she believes in the power of positivity.

“I feel like I’ve been put on this journey to do something bigger – using my nursing skills, using my terminal diagnosis for good – even if I could help save one life by sharing my story, what I’m doing with others – that would be amazing.” People can donate to help support Haley’s family and treatments at: www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/helphaley-fight-breast-cancer Georgia Minkhorst

Photo: Steve Brown.

Although her next scan in May showed her breast mass had increased to 16mm and the other cancers saw no change. Haley reflected on the one thing she had changed, which was decreasing the Vitamin C doses – so has intensified these again. “There’s limited proper studies on it so the doctors will say: ‘Well we don’t really know for sure if it was the Vitamin C or the other treatments’,” says Haley, who believes it is the unfunded, alternative treatments combined with her mainstream medical treatments that are positively impacting her.

Haley strongly encourages other women to do self-breast exams, saying when she worked as a smear-taker she would advise women to do this. “Had I been listening to my own words and actually done self-breast exams, I could’ve caught this a lot sooner before it became the size of a golf ball. The cancers are often more aggressive in these younger women and they’re the mothers – and the mothers can’t get sick,” says Haley, who wants to stay alive for her children Millie, aged two, Rhys, aged four, and Lauren, aged eight.

Self-breast exams

No finanical support

Haley has also incorporated chiropractic care into her treatment plan. She urges others in similar situations to ask about alternative treatments. “You should be given all that information, not just: ‘We’re going to start you on this and this’.”

Haley’s doctor has told her she needs to stop working so she can rest and heal. However, due to a WINZ means test against her husband’s income and a before-tax calculation, she is not eligible for financial support. “I have to keep working otherwise

Slow down around roadworks

Tauranga Police are urging motorists to slow down around road works in the city. Western BOP road policing manager senior sergeant Wayne Hunter people using Cameron Rd will be aware of roadworks underway between First and Fifth avenues. “The roadworks are part of a programme of work underway to

make this important thoroughfare safer for all road users. “A 30km/hr temporary speed limit is in place to keep the area safe for contractors working on the road and all road users.” Wayne says Police will have an increased presence in the area and enforcement action will be taken against motorists who do not obey the speed limit.

Hottest picks

“We have approximately 500 boxes… and there could be 10 to 15 books in a box so it’s a lot of books,” says Te Puke Kiwi Coast Lioness Helen Potter, who has been part of the club for four years. Helen says the hottest picks for those revving to read varies each year but she does notice some trends. “Books like westerns and the war are very popular because they’re usually quite old books.”

She adds it is “generally the older, middle-aged man” that gravitate towards these types of reads. However, the book fair attracts everyone. “[We have] a total mix – young and old.” Helen adds that bookworms will go the extra mile to score new books for their home collections. “We have people come from way out of the [Te Puke] area as well, from Waihi, Rotorua, Whakatane… we’ve even had people come over from Matamata.”

Hidden gems

Helen says “you do get the odd little gem” among donations. “We received a collection of Sir Winston Churchill books and they were

priced at $300… a chap was very willing to buy those; it was a bit of a collector’s item and I think for me… that was a biggie,” says Helen. This year there is a box of Charles Dickens’ books on the fair’s top table. Collectors’ pieces such as this, classics and rare books will have set prices. However most books range from 50c to $4 each. “It’s good to see the public come in and get some really good bargains. “[The book fair] is our biggest fundraiser for the year and it all goes back to the community so it’s really good,” says Helen. The book fair is on 8am-6pm June 24; 9am-5pm June 25; and 9am-3pm June 26; at Te Puke Memorial Hall, 564 Jellicoe St, Te Puke. Georgia Minkhorst

Te Puke kids will carry the left handle of the kete basket to share matariki knowledge with the community that they gain from Te Kete Matariki’s education day.

Today, hundreds of kids from across the Te Puke community will “share in the kaupapapa of Matariki” as a part of Te Kete Matariki’s education day, named ‘Te Kīwai Mauī’. “Te Kete Matariki is talking about a kete or a basket that came over on the Te Aroha waka that our ancestors brought kumara over in with them,” says community coordinator Tatai Takuira-Mita. “Our education day is named after the left handle of that kete basket.” Held at Jubilee Park Te Puke from 9.30am-2.30pm, youngsters will take part in workshops and activities connected to the Māori New Year ahead of New Zealand’s first official public holiday tomorrow to celebrate the occasion. There is a lot on too! From raranga (Māori weaving), manu tukutuku (Māori kite making) to maara kai (gardening) workshops and more. Groups of kids will also be sent to Te Puke’s memorial pools to paint a mural to commemorate Matariki’s first public holiday, says Tatai.

Deepening knowledge Doubling as Fairhaven School’s deputy principal, Tatai has been teaching about Matariki for the last 15 years but has

noticed a shift in recent times. “There’s definitely been a movement in the last five or six years where it’s [Matariki] become more widely known… every year we dig a little bit deeper and develop our understanding of the old ways and the importance for all of us,” says Tatai.

Important learning “The kaupapa of Matariki is important for all kids growing up in New Zealand, to know about this uniquely Aotearoa celebration,” says Tatai. “I think that it’s very significant if you know about the old ways, the significance of the stars, how they connect to our natural environment; that’s what our kids are learning at school. “[It] goes down really well with the kids – they sing about it, they learn about each star… there’s like a real buzz at the moment,” says Tatai, who adds the teachings around Matariki can be incorporated into all topics. The next day – ‘Te Kīwai Katau’ – or the ‘right handle’ of the kete – is taking place on Friday, June 24. This will be a community day where friends and whanau will celebrate Matariki with culture, music and kai at Jubilee Park, Te Puke, from 10am-4pm. A tent set up among festivities is for children to share with whanau what they’ve learnt at the education day, linking the two days together. “It’s not just to educate the kids but it’s to educate the whanau, and in doing so our whole community can just become more aware,” says Tatai.

I’d like to make a special mention of Simon Bridges and recognise his long public service as an MP. Simon cares deeply about Tauranga and all of New Zealand.

Mount thefts

Drink driving in WBOP

A spate of brazen break-ins by a thief with a crowbar is leaving Mount Maunganui store owners “devastated”, and desperately grouping together to hire private security to make up for what they say is a lack of Police patrols. In the past six weeks, more than 12 shops on the Mount’s main strip have been broken into, or suffered an attempted break-in, the owners say. As well as looking into private security, Mount Mainstreet is organising a safety meeting for all its members attended by local Police and security experts.

During the past two weekends, Police have engaged with more than 11,000 drivers at breath alcohol checkpoints around Western Bay of Plenty, as part of Operation Tri City. “Amongst this number, 153 impaired drivers were processed at these checkpoints – equating to one in every 75 vehicles stopped,” says Relieving District Commander Superintendent Tim Anderson. “This was a disappointing and significant number of impaired drivers on our roads putting themselves, their passengers and other road users at risk of harm on our roads.”

MIQ hotels Hotels earned an average of $1.3 million a month from being MIQ facilities. Data released to RNZ shows the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment spent nearly $800 million in 18 months on lease agreements. Thirty-three hotels granted MBIE exclusive use of all their rooms, and agreed to provide laundry and catering for returnees, including three meals a day. According to data, released under the Official Information Act, the amount MBIE paid each hotel varied significantly depending on the hotel, location, and its occupancy.

Urgent appeal Vulnerable children are bearing the brunt of the cost-of-living crisis, with teachers in schools and early childhood centres supported by KidsCan reporting increasing concerns for their wellbeing. The charity has seen a spike in applications for help, with more than 2000 children on its waitlist. It has launched an urgent appeal to help feed children as winter hits. “Whānau are at breaking point… no water for weeks, no power, no petrol to bring their children to school,” one principal wrote. KidsCan is supporting more than 1000 schools and early childhood centres, helping to feed a record 44,000 children every day. To donate visit: www.15for15.org.nz

By-election a seismic shift The result was never in doubt, but National’s share of the vote has sent shockwaves as far away as the Beehive. National candidate Sam Uffindel won more than 56 per cent of the vote in the Tauranga electorate by-election on the weekend – the best result for National since 2011. However, that’s only half the story. Combined with Cameron Luxton’s strong performance for ACT, the centre-right parties won a historic two-thirds of the votes cast. For the centre-left, it was their worst result since 2014. Election night 2020 must seem like a lifetime ago for Jan Tinetti. That night, her message to

National was: “Look out, we’re on our way”. How quickly things have changed with Labour shedding a whopping 14 per cent off their 2020 result, winning just 25 per cent of the votes cast. The Greens usually win between four-six per cent of the electorate votes in Tauranga; they didn’t contest this by-election and instead rallied their supporters to back Jan Tinetti. If the Greens ran, it’s conceivable Labour’s vote could have fallen below 20 per cent.

Issues that matter

Why did National do so well? Both Sam Uffindel and National talked about the issues that matter to Tauranga. Internal party polling showed that the cost of living crisis, crime, traffic congestion, and a lack of local democracy were the top issues for Tauranga voters. On each issue, National

offered solutions, whereas Jan Tinetti was left defending Labour’s indefensible record on each.

Jan deserved better

Tinetti fought the good fight, but at times, her apparent frustration at constantly having to defend the Government’s lack of delivery showed in the debates. It’s not easy flying the flag of an unpopular government in an opposition electorate. I know, I helped National campaign in the true-red Kelston electorate in 2014. National’s leader Chris Luxon and ACT leader David Seymour were regular visitors to Tauranga to help their candidates and encourage local party activists – but the Prime Minister was nowhere to be seen. There’s no excuse;

Labour announced their candidate long before National, and there was plenty of time for a quick stop in Tauranga. On a human level, both Jan and local Labour activists deserved better. Everyone, including Jan, knew it would be a loss, but they gave their best. The least the PM could do was show some loyalty to them in return.

Inside National’s selection

I was proud to be chosen as one of the 63 delegates to select National’s candidate. We were spoilt for choice,

and I am confident that any of the four contenders would have won the seat for National. Sam won selection by a decisive margin, but I thought it would come down to a run-off between him and 25-year-old Tom Rutherford, who proved to be a strong speaker; watch out for his name in the future. My takeaway from the by-election result? The politics of the pandemic are clearly over. National and Act have got to be clear favourites for 2023.

Building a stronger education system Our Government is working hard to build an education system that gives every student in Tauranga, and across the country, the best chance to succeed.

As part of this work, our School Investment Package has supported around 4500 school upgrade projects around New Zealand. We believe that all Kiwi kids deserve classrooms that are fit-for-purpose, vibrant spaces to learn and play in, and decent sports facilities. To make this a reality, in 2019 our Government announced the biggest capital injection for school maintenance funding in more than two decades – and thanks to this, almost every single state school in New Zealand has been able to make much-needed property improvements. Here in Tauranga we’ve provided funding for new outdoor learning areas so students have great

places to learn in, playground and classroom upgrades, and more. All of these improvements are helping to make our local schools, such as Greerton Village School, places where young people want to be. Greerton Village School has benefitted with upgrades to its classrooms and landscaping with the addition of canopies and covered walkways. In addition to delivering upgrades to almost every state school, our Government is building hundreds of new classrooms around the country. We’re also making school funding fairer by scrapping the outdated decile system, and we’re boosting investment to give schools the teachers and equipment they need. All of this builds on the work we’ve done since 2017, to make sure every Kiwi child gets a great education, including making schooling more affordable for families, better supporting teachers and more.

PtfBLJIJ D11/J:

Current vessel, TECT Rescue, will be replaced with a faster boat that’s cheaper to run, thanks again to TECT.

Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard is getting busier and busier, with rescue numbers almost doubling in the past four years and international travel restrictions prompting more on-water activity here.

coastguard operations – not only in Tauranga, but the wider Bay of Plenty and Coromandel regions. During the last financial year, Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard’s 60 volunteers answered 30,810 radio calls, carried out 219 vessel assists, and brought 550 people home safely.

That’s why construction will soon begin on a new, purpose-built rescue vessel for the coastguard – with the current vessel, TECT Rescue, which TECT contributed $250,000 to in 2006, struggling to meet the increasing demands of the area.

Game-changer

TECT helps again “Last year we did 80 per cent more rescues than we did in 2016,” says Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard’s operations manager Dane Robertson. “TECT Rescue is 16 years old and, while wellutilised the maintenance and repairs to ensure it is ready 24/7 have become cost-prohibitive. A new vessel is required to keep up with the region’s needs and ensure our loved ones’ safety out on the water.” TECT has again stepped in to help the coastguard, in April approving $650,000 in funding to support construction of the new rescue vessel, a $2.25 million project. The coastguard has raised $750,000 of the funds themselves, with additional support from local sponsors. The build also has financial backing of Coastguard New Zealand, as it’s seen as critical to

Dane says TVC has been working closely with vessel designer, Teknicraft, to design a 14-metre catamaran that will address the current boat’s limitations and better support joint-agency tasks with greater capacity to transport teams of police, medics and crew. Dane says the new vessel’s speed and fuel economy will be a game-changer. “The new boat will get to Mayor Island at least 40 minutes quicker. “If you were in trouble, 40 minutes would make a huge difference. It will be cheaper to run, and its cruising speed will be what is TECT Rescue’s maximum speed. So, it will cruise faster and use less diesel doing so. Plus, it will be a bit more workable in terms of its physical layout, meaning safer and more comfortable working areas for crew. “Underneath, it will have foil technology that raises the hull up out of the water, which will result in a smoother ride. We are grateful for TECT’s support.” Construction begins July and is expected to take 14 months.

Councillors must reflect public opinion

Thank You! Tauranga Sam Uffindell

sam.uffindell@national.org.nz Authorised by S Uffindell, 35a Third Avenue, Tauranga

Thank you The Weekend Sun for publishing Letters to the Editor. A free press is so important in these volatile times. I’ve never known a time when local and central government was so contentious, yet so important to us all! Re: ‘Disappointed in Three waters view’ (The Weekend Sun, June 17). May I congratulate Katikati-Waihi Beach Residents and Ratepayers Association chair Keith Hay for so effectively representing public opinion. I have found hundreds that support him; no one yet that disagrees! That is democracy at work. As an electrical contractor involved over many years with council water and sewerage work, and later with 12 years as an elected councillor, I understand better than most the energy and effort staff made and the huge ratepayer cost input that provided the excellent facilities we now have. I understand the Katikati Community Board was unanimously opposed to Three Waters. WBOP councillor Allan Sole took this message to council, and voted accordingly; however councillor James Denyer – as pointed out in Keith’s letter – voted the other way, with an opposing view.

Full of joy and caring The team at Tauranga Hospital have been looking after my wife for five weeks with great care and attention. When the discharge team provided support to Marion, it left me speechless. Perhaps they thought I was a relative to the Health Minister? Nothing was too much trouble for Erna, Maya, Cinu – full of joy and caring. The problems of New Zealand would not exist if we had people who care for others in such a way, instead of the many who only have self-interests at heart – and not for the good of the country. Ron Chamberlain, Otumoetai.

Don’t yell – email your MP!

I am appalled to hear from our hospital administrative staff about the daily verbal abuse they suffer at the hands (and mouths) of the disgruntled public. The healthcare system is overstretched, chronically under-resourced and about to be hit with the winter wave, pushing all appointments, procedures and surgeries out by weeks, if not months. That person you are screaming or swearing at over the phone literally has zero control over the current situation, so calm down, control yourself, be kind and instead, write/ phone/email your local MP – what else are they there for anyway? Government want to pay us a few cents in the dollar for the asset ratepayers have built over many years, and transfer some control to iwi. Our WBOP council had the option to join other councils, and spend $15,000 to fight to retain $323 million of ratepayer-funded asset – a good deal I would have thought! Government has offered a $21 million ‘sweetner’in the form of Better Off funding. Councillor Denyer’s reply to Keith’s letter last week says he’d rather not waste money on political posturing. My maths tells me what is proposed is a rotten deal, so I support opposing Three Waters for the above reasons. Councillors must reflect public opinion. I believe what the Government is proposing is contestable, outrageous and unfair to our ratepayers. I invite further public opinion on this injustice. One law for all is the only Kiwi way! THE BAYVIEW

Christine and Raewyn share the magic of The Bayview. Discover why it’s the place to be. We sat down with good friends, Raewyn and Christine, to hear about life at The Bayview. Turns out, they go way back. “Both of us were in Whangamata when we were younger.” Raewyn tells us. “We didn’t know we were there together. It’s so lovely to have found out now. We do enjoy each other’s company and I would do anything for her.” She goes on to explain how they fill the day together. “Morning coffee and exercise, a social drink with our barman, or sausage sizzles on a Friday. Sometimes we gather around the piano for a singsong.” Christine nods along smiling as she reflects on the great location of The Bayview. “It’s only four minutes to town and my son’s house and there’s three supermarkets – it’s really convenient.” Raewyn adds, “Plus it’s so quiet you wouldn’t believe you’re in the middle of the city.” Fixed weekly fee for life - Guaranteed. New housing in Ōmokoroa on horizon More homes – and different types of them – are set to be built in Ōmokoroa with Western Bay of Plenty District Council taking advantage of a new law being introduced to speed up residential developments.

Building consents will still be required. There are nine rules that must be met for the activity to be permitted, including the height restrictions, and having a minimum outdoor living space. The entire peninsula will be subject to the new MDRS rules.

WBOPDC resource management manager Phillip Martelli says most of Ōmokoroa’s newer housing will not be affected because these homes were built more recently and they’re less likely to be redeveloped any time soon.

New rules for designated building products

New regulations have been made by government to ensure a minimum level of information is provided about designated building products, to increase confidence in their use, and support better and more efficient decision-making. The new rules for building products mean certain information is required to be provided publicly by building product manufacturers and importers. Retailers and distributors will need to check the required information is available for the designated building products they sell or distribute. The regulations will make it easier for designers, builders and homeowners to decide which products are right for the job, use them as intended, and make

25 THE WEEKEND SUN

The Weekend Sun’s ever popular guide to ‘What’s On’ in the Bay.

Happy Matariki – it’s jazz fest time! The only thing I’ve got to say this week about the Port of Tauranga 59th National Jazz Festival is a reminder.

WHAT’S ON

Here’s that reminder: there are still tickets available for concerts at Baycourt; there is music off the main street of Mount Maunganui all day Friday; the programme for the weekend’s CBD Downtown Carnival is online. With that I’ll step back and leave it to y’all. The place to find info is: www.jazz.org.nz. Regarding the Downtown Carnival, there are 16 final venues confirmed for Saturday and Sunday, roughly running midday to 6pm. Some start a little later, some finish a little earlier; it’s all in the programme. There are also more bands than touted last week: it really is a very impressive line-up, especially since it’s pretty much free to attend (though I’m assuming venues would like you to eat and drink!). Go have a look – it’s all there and now pretty much set and in the lap of the gods. Will it be too quiet? Will everyone leave Tauranga on holiday? Will it be too busy? Will everyone come to Tauranga on holiday? Will it be a logistical nightmare? Will it be so good that this becomes the norm? Will a small plane fly over The Strand dropping $50 notes? Is there any point in asking these rhetorical questions? Time will tell...

It’s an opportunity to mark the end of one year and beginning of another. The sign it is the time of the New Year is the appearance of the Matariki star cluster in the night sky. Taking time to ponder, celebrate and prepare is good for you to do. If you take that opportunity, it can be helpful. If you take time to gaze at the stars and reflect on the past, present and future, listen to what the stars are saying; they have a voice. They speak every day; that voice is telling you there is a Creator, and He is Glorious! “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after

night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world (Psalm 19 v1-4 NLT).” Even more than knowing there is a Creator is that the Creator can be known. You can know Him through His Son, Jesus Christ who is: “…the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see (Colossians 1v15&16 NLT).” This is a truth to be believed, a truth to take a firm stand on; a truth upon which you can prepare for the future with hope. May God bless you and keep you this day and every day!
