Brian’s style of not beating around the bush sparked many a debate in the community.

“Sailed his last ocean, paddled his last river, drummed his last beat, caught his last sh, written his last word.”

He broke the news to the world on SunLive, Sun Media’s online news website.

Training for police dogs follows a repetitive structure and can take 12-18 months until a dog is ready. “We train them to do tracking people, searching buildings, nding articles such as things people might leave behind when they leave crimes or use in crimes, and apprehending people,” says Scott.

Handlers and their police dogs get matched based on their individual attitudes, says Scott.

“Our boss tries to line our dog’s personalities up with ours, so he looks at them and thinks that dogs a bit like him and then matches us.”

Handling Tauranga’s crime

e policemen and their furry workmates recently graduated from the Dog Training Centre, which sent out 22 police boots and 44 paws to help make New Zealand’s communities safer.

Although the role of the handler and the police dog is varied, both Scott and Dave enjoy catching criminals the most. “If you’ve had a really good track with the dog – it’s really good fun,” says Dave. “We’ve caught one person so far in our rst week, which was just awesome, and it makes you just want to do that more,” says Scott.

Matched up

Tauranga Constables Scott Higby and Dave Balck and their police dogs ‘Chip’ and ‘Oslo’ are key tactical operations, when it comes to tracking people and solving crime in our city.

Dave says the role of the handler and police dog team is massive. “It’s the one tactical operation that we have that everyone wants to see turn up.”

“When I joined the Police I realised that dog handling is probably the coolest job you could do in the Police,” says Scott.

“It’s just a good sense when we’re out on the frontline working with everyone,” says Scott.

Police dog ‘Chip’ and Constable Scott Higby have already apprehended one criminal during their rst week in the eld this month. Photo: John Borren.

Training his police dog ‘Chip’ for a year, Scott is new on the dog-handling scene, whereas Dave has been a police dog-handler for six years. “It doesn’t get old – it’s really exciting to get back out there with a new dog and see what happens,” says Dave.

However, the hidden petition beneath the portrait was cause for public stir initially, says Graham. “It’s quite funny too because there were quite a few people thinking: ‘What the heck is he doing?’ – it must’ve looked like I was tagging the whole building. But once I started painting the eyes, people were starting to say: “Wow” and see what was going on – it’s been a big attraction.”

Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Regional Council along with Te Rangihakahaka School planted up the edges of the Te Ahipukahu stream on the Rotohokahoka F6 block in Rotorua recently. A beautiful morning was spent with the tamariki planting a range of native species including mānuka, harakeke and a range of grasses. The site is well known for its clear spring, the source of the stream which shares the same name, and flows into Lake Rotorua. Planting began a year ago and before that the site was covered in climbing weed, blackberry and gorse. The mission for the tamariki at this event was to fill in all the gaps with native saplings and plants to continue to restore the site.

Keeping up to date with your vaccinations is really important, even if you’ve already had COVID-19.

13 Friday 16 September 2022The Weekend Sun

Keeping up to date with your vaccinations is one of the most important things you can do to help protect yourself, your whānau and your community.

You can catch COVID-19 more than once. Boosters help protect you from getting very sick from COVID-19, ending up in hospital, and even death.

A booster will provide extra protection from a previous vaccination and help your immunity be stronger and last longer. And, by staying as healthy as you can, you help reduce pressure on our communities, businesses and the health sector.

If you’ve had COVID-19, you can get your booster three months after you tested positive. Make sure you are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations. Check your eligibility at Covid19.govt.nz or call 0800 28 29 26.

Most recently, he’s turned a bowls hobby into a passion project by creating bowls containers in the brand new workshop with his fellow resident and new friend, Terry. The individually named and meticulously finished carved wooden carriers are a huge hit with the bowlers, with ‘the boys’ even making two styles to suit different players’ needs.
