Mayhem in focus Tauranga’s Red Dragon Thai Boxing club is hosting series five of the Muay Thai Mayhem event, where some of the club’s fighters will get in the ring for the first time. Rick and Ash, troublemakers extraordinaire It seems a lot of people have had their lives upended by Rick Torscale and travel plans disrupted by Ash Cloud. Man, are those two trouble.

I’ve known some troublemakers in my time, including another Ashley, who also gave me some grief while travelling.

In fact, the whole rugby team’s travel plans were disrupted by Ash Wahlberg, a guy on the bus who decided it was a clever idea to squeeze an orange quarter in the eyeballs of his team mates.

This was a bit pointless for several reasons: Firstly, we had enough to cope with, facing a grudge match against the thugs in Katikati, without having half the team blinded by Ash’s citrus eyewash.

Secondly, the oranges were meant to be for half time.

Funny how we remember people. That’s my most

enduring memory of Ash. Who knows where he ended up? Perhaps that was the defining moment of his life and he’s done nothing more spectacular ever since.

Or maybe he’s a leading researcher for Optrex or moved onto to greater squeezing milestones and is now a fruit juice magnate somewhere, like Marc Ellis.

But I bet Marc didn’t start his career in the juice industry by attacking his fellow team mates. He might have chased a few cheeses downhill and had a pre-occupation of dropping his daks and running free, but I reckon he never stooped to assault with a fruit.

The other reason Ash Wall was remarkable, is that he had the coolest nickname.

He was known as Ashley Ready-Pasted Wahl Paper.

This story will only mean something to people who have been around long enough to remember ready-pasted wall paper. The rest of you, go back to the playstation.

By the way, Katikati thumped us. Can’t tell you the exact score, most of us were still squinting through watering eyes and couldn’t read the scoreboard.

So back to Ash Cloud. He’s been spewing forth and really messing up flight plans around the world.

Combined with the torrid time Christchurch is having, plus the floods, landslides and general random weather mayhem, it’s a reminder that Nature is still fully in charge here.

We can make all the civilised plans we like; in the end, Nature will have her way and the best we can do is go with the flow.

Here at RR headquarters we’ve been wracking our feeble brains for something to further help the good folk of Canterbury, who must be thoroughly tired of having their lives shuffled.

Runaway rubbish truck Police say the cause of a rubbish truck rolling off and wrecking itself over a steep bank at Fraser Street is a reminder to always turn the wheels when using a handbrake.

The Kleana Bins truck rolled away at about 11.40am Wednesday morning – leaving its driver behind.

“He was out of the truck, it took off without him,” says Kleana Bins office manager Joy Page.

“He chased after it, but I don’t know what he was going to do.”

The truck out-paced the driver and rolled down a driveway, through a steel barrier and over a five metre bank to Fraser Street.

It ended up angle parked against the Fraser Street footpath opposite Page Street.

Fraser Street was closed for about an hour while the truck was removed, with traffic diverted

along Lloyd Street and Baycroft Avenue.

“What happened was the gentleman reversed up a driveway,” says Constable Dan Matthews, “and when he’s backed up he pulled the handbrake on, which locked both rear wheels – one set of wheels was on grass and lost traction.”

The truck started to roll and went through the steel barrier.

“It’s a reminder for when people park on hills, to steer the wheels to one side so the vehicle doesn’t roll out in front of traffic – or fly down hills and perhaps take out

The truck is a write-off.

Mount set to slow mode Mount Maunganui is slowing down from August 1 this year when the speed limit for the Mount, north of Banks Avenue, drops to 30km/h.

From Banks Avenue to Adams Avenue at the base of the Mount the speed limit on all streets is changing to 30km/h, instead of the 50km/h it is at present.

Totara Street, the main entry to the Mount for Tauranga traffic, is to be slowed from 70km/h to 60km/h.

The changes were approved this week by the Tauranga City Council, which has the power to change speed limits under the Speed Limit Bylaw that came into effect in October 2009.

“The driver behind that 30km/h in that area is to try and make the environment more pedestrian friendly,” says city transport manager Martin Parkes.

“It’s our plan to actually put further measures out there in the next couple of years to make it a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

“We’ll be promoting more pedestrian crossings out there and build-outs to create an environ-

ment more conducive to people walking around and enjoying the environment, instead of it being a car-dominated area.”

The Mall in Pilot Bay in particular is being eyed up for more pedestrian-friendly developments.

“We want to put more formal crossing points down there,” says Martin.

“There’s none at the moment on The Mall at all and I’ve seen a lot of people struggling to get across over there dodging the cars.

“The beach there is quite a familyorientated beach environment, catering for small children and young people.”

The northern end of Marine Parade is an example of how The Mall may look in future says Martin.

The 30km/h speed limit on Marine Parade was introduced about four years ago and has worked extremely well he says.

“We’ve had some very positive feedback on that – the 30 km/h and the pedestrian crossings there – so we want to use that as an example that we can use elsewhere.”

Speed surveys show that traffic in the Mount northern streets already travel at speeds closer to 30km/h than 50km/h.

In addition to the lowering of the speed limit for all streets north of

Banks Avenue, Totara Street and also Cambridge Road across the city, are to have speeds lowered from 70 to 60km/h because of the increasingly built-up nature of the roadsides in what were formerly semi-rural areas.

Speed surveys in both streets show the mean speeds of traffic well below the present 70km/h limit and closer to 60km/h.

The northern end of Oropi Road is also to have a lowered speed limit, from the current speed limit of 100 to 80km/h from SH29 to a point halfway between Phillips Drive and Wood Road. Phillips Drive, a residential cul-de-sac with a 100km/h speed limit at present, will have a 50km/h limit posted.

Ohauiti’s 50km/h limit will be extended south for better visibility.

Two new variable speed school zones will be created for the third term, one for Papamoa Primary School the other Bethlehem College.

The Papamoa zone will include sections of Parton Road, Dickson Road, Simpson Road and the full length of Enterprise Drive and Market Place. The speed is to be reduced from 50 to 40km/h during specified times.

The Bethlehem College zone includes a section of Moffat Road near the college and Elder Lane.

Protestors join hands Tauranga is joining countries around the world in the simple act of joining hands along the beach – a symbol to say “no” to offshore drilling.

‘Hands Across the Sand’ on Saturday, June 25 is an international gathering of people who want to take a stand against expanding offshore drilling.

Joining hands on Mount Maunganui’s main beach seems an appropriate location to take a stand against offshore drilling says ‘Tauranga Hands Across the Sand’ organiser Dan Hancock.

“Mount Maunganui beach is New Zealand’s leading beach holiday destination and the risk of any offshore oil rig accidents could potentially have huge impact on Tauranga’s environment and economy.

“We believe clean energy must begin to replace fossil fuels to ensure a clean future,” says Dan.

“The environmental damage associated with acquiring, refining and continuing to burn fossil fuels guarantees a planet poisoned with dirty air, water and unhealthy food.”

‘Hands Across the Sand’ is an apolitical event founded in Florida by surfer Dave Rauschklob in 2010. This is the first time the event has been held in Tauranga.

Dave says he started the event because he believes humans are inflicting a “slow death on the earth”.

Dan says members of the public, young or old, are encouraged to participate to see how far they can make the group stretch along the beach.

What do turtles, flowers and Godzilla have in common? They are the winning designs of the 2011 Bike Wise Month Helmet competition.

Primary school students aged five to 10 years old designed a funky helmet for the competition as part of bike awareness and Bike Wise Month. The winning designs were then created by Rotorua graffiti artist Ant Haines.

Active Lifestyles advisor for Western Bay of Plenty Nicki Miller says the three designs were chosen because “they were just so cool”.

“You could tell they had been hand-drawn, not traced. The designs just looked really different.”

Finn Handley’s mother Aileen says her son has a real imagination – so drawing Godzilla was no surprise to her.

“He is really into Doctor Who and that sort of

thing – you should see his drawings. He has such an imagination. “He did it all at school, so we didn’t see the design until he came home for his helmet fitting and we found out he had won.”

While Finn, 10, rides his scooter more than his bike, Aileen says he is very proud with his win and wore it to school as soon as he got his new helmet.

Kellie Harley’s mother, Eileen, says it was the seven-year-olds older sister that “prompted her into entering”.

“They had been working together on painting pots for the school gala and they had been playing with the idea of flowers.

“Her older sister copied the form for Kellie to draw on and got her into it.”

Alex Penellum’s father Barry says Alex, 8, has always had an interest in turtles.

The two turtles in his room was all the inspiration he needed for his winning design.

The annual plan process is complete – signalling a rates rise and a return to regular business for the Tauranga City Council.

The annual plan was due to be confirmed on Thursday, after The Weekend Sun deadline.

If it is confirmed, the rate revenue take will be $98,970 million – down $5.9 million from that forecast in the Ten Year Plan. That’s about 11 per cent up on last year and allowing for one per cent growth will see individual rates rising by around 10 per cent.

As noted, many times before, this is not a happy situation. Given how this happened after consultation, levels of service demands, and a reluctance to cut back from both community and most elected members, then there is no option.

Cup festival on waterfront Tauranga’s waterfront is the centre-stage of the Real Tauranga Festival during the Rugby World Cup. Festival co-organiser Aaron McCallion is still finalising details, but says the event will include a live music stage, an area with tourism activities and a family fun zone.

The festival is being held during the RWC – between September 9 and October 23 – but the actual timing will not be confirmed until July after consultation finishes.

The waterfront area is going to be split into zones – with an adventure tourism hub near the former Kestrel pontoon, a stage for bands on the grass area alongside the fountain and a community family zone at the northern end of the carpark.

The adventure tourism hub will provide information and offer a range of activities for people to take part in, such as Blo karting or boat rides.

“There will be a lot of FITs (foreign independent travellers) rolling around, so they will be able to have a go on these activities,” says Aaron.

A family-focussed community zone where schools and groups can promote activities or fundraise with food or other stalls will be set up in the northern part of the carpark.

“We are wanting to make it a real big community festival. It’s about offering something for everyone.”

Rugby 3D screening Tauranga rugby supporters are likely to have a chance to enjoy the live excitement of the Rugby World Cup finals – even if they missed out on getting tickets to the big games.

Plans to screen the top four final games in 3D at Bay City Cinemas in Tauranga are being finalised, with owner Paul Desmond saying he is “fairly confident” the deal will be confirmed soon.

Paul says there had been strong interest in the screening from corporate clients and was confident it would be a huge success.

“It will be the first time that sports have been screened in 3D here in Tauranga – and believe me it’s great,” says Paul.

“You are right in the game.”

He says prices had not been finalised, but would be in line with other cinemas at about $50 – $36 for children – to watch the semi-finals and play-offs and about $5 extra for the final. Prices are higher than the $15 for a normal 3D screening with extra costs towards the expense of a satellite dish and other equipment needed for live broadcasts.

“The Rugby World Cup will only be the first of our 3D screenings of live events – we will be doing other sports and concerts or operas,” says Paul.

Tauranga City Council events organiser Dale Henderson says plans by the council to televise world cup games live on a large screen on The Strand were unlikely to go ahead.

He says a requirement by Rugby World Cup organisers that the public not be charged to watch games screened live meant the council would be left out of pocket with screening costs.

Icy plunge fundraiser A mid-winter plunge into Omanu beach’s icy waters is planned to celebrate the late Mount Maunganui College student Jed Roberts.

The ‘Polar Bear Plunge’ – organised by the college’s sports council – is raising funds to support leukemia sufferers after Jed died from the disease in April, after a 19-month battle.

Year 13 sports captain Joel Widmer, who was a friend of Jed’s, says his death had been “pretty bad” for those who knew him.

Joel says students in their year had known Jed since intermediate school and they wanted to do something to celebrate his life and raise awareness about leukemia.

He describes Jed – who he played soccer and tennis with – as an easy-going, motivated guy.

“His determination is immensely

inspiring. He was battling leukemia for months.”

Fellow sports captain Leah Marumaru-Flynn says they are pleased with the support.

“We’ve already had a great response from students and are hoping to make it an annual event,” says Leah.

She hopes 200 Year 12-13 students will take part, along with members of the community, including some Netball Bay of Plenty players.

People are encouraged to wear orange – the national colour for leukemia – to show their support.

Everyone taking part is asked to give $3, with all funds going to the Bay of Plenty branch of the Leukaemia Foundation. Donations are being accepted at the college office. The plunge, which involves getting out and having a “splash around” is at the Omanu Surf Club on Wednesday, June 29

Bury yourself in writing to create a new world Children’s writer Susan Brocker sometimes loses herself in her stories and her characters.

“It’s like creating a whole new world.

You can bury yourself in it,” she says.

It is a habit she has had since she began writing as a schoolgirl. Drawn to writing at a young age, Susan recalls cutting her teeth on a horror story as a 10 year old. Every week her school friends would avidly await the new instalment she passed around.

She has just been shortlisted for the Esther Glen Award for junior fiction for her novel ‘Dreams of Warriors’ and last month received two ‘Storyline Notable Book of the Year’ awards.

Last week, she published her latest young person’s novel; ‘The Wolf in the Wardrobe’ – a story she believes will appeal to all animal loving 8-14 year olds.

Susan hopes the book will be critically well-received, but even more importantly “well-loved” by its readers.

After eight years of writing dramatised history and social studies books for the American educational market, Susan’s focussed changed 12 years ago when she left the Auckland publisher to shift to

“When I shifted here I decided to write more for Kiwi kids – stories that they can relate to,” she says.

“If people can see their lives reflected in the books they read, they relate to them a lot more.”

Susan gets her ideas from all around her and her interests in history and animals.

“I’m inspired by them – we are surrounded by them here and I absolutely love it,” she says looking around her Pyes Pa property at her horses and dog.

‘The Wolf in the Wardrobe’ is her fourth novel – and like those before it,

it features or was inspired, by a favourite animal.

Susan says the idea for the book, which revolves around a wolf that was rescued from a circus, came after a child said her German Shepherd Yogi looked like a wolf.

“I have always loved animals,” she says.

“I was a bit of a nuisance as a child, always coming home with strays.”

Her advice to aspiring writers is to choose a subject that you will love and it will shine through in the writing. The advice is working for her.

Brent says competitors and spectators are travelling from Auckland, Palmerston North, Hamilton and Whakatane.

Leon Pamore, 33, is fighting for the first time this weekend. Leon was training in Muay Thai for two and a half years until he sustained some serious injures to his wrist and elbow that put him out of action.

“Getting back into it was like a burning desire,” says Leon.

“It is a test for myself – just the ultimate test to see how good I am.”

He says he loves Muay Thai for the discipline and it gives him goals to strive towards.

“It is the best place to test yourself against an opponent who has trained just as hard as you. I really love the fairness of it.

“I also do it for one of my good friends, Luke Miller who passed away. I want to honour his spirit and keep it real for him.”

Leon’s fight is not a full Muay Thai fight as it is his first, meaning there will be no knee-to-face contact and he is not allowed to use his elbows.

Going into the fight, Leon is “150 per cent” confident he will win because his training has put him in good stead.

“I’m not trying to sound cocky because I am not that kind of person, but I know I have done the work and I am looking forward to a good fight.”

Bayfair Shopping Centre launched a search in April to find two ‘Faces of Fashion’ to star in the centre’s first women’s fashion television commercial.

Full-time mum Jessica Verran was announced as the ‘face’ of the 18 to 35 group and Tauranga Intermediate canteen manager Theresa Comber represents the 35 and over group.

Jessica and Theresa were treated to an ultimate pampering day at Bayfair Shopping Centre and agreed to have their experience captured on camera. They received a top-totoe makeover, including two new outfits including shoes and jewellery selected by Bayfair’s retailer professionals, a make-up session and cosmetics, a manicure and a hairstyling session to complete their

Funding boost for our air ambulance service Hon Tony Ryall and I recently handed over a cheque for nearly $54,000 from the government to the Trustpower TECT Helicopter Trust.

As you’ll probably know, this air ambulance service operates in our immediate region and beyond – saving peoples’ lives in emergency situations.

The helicopter and its staff are located in behind Tauranga Hospital.

During the years, the Trust has done a great job raising funds for its vital service from community and private funds, including through a lot of sponsorship from Tauranga folk.

The Canterbury earthquakes, along with tight economic conditions, have, however, made fundraising much more difficult and the government’s contribution is in recognition of this.

The funding is part of a broader package of $48 million to support the implementation of an Ambulance Services Strategy during the next four years.

Two recent sporting events have proved yet again what a bustling, busy place, Tauranga is. In recent years I have noticed an increasing number of national events being held here and last weekend it was a pleasure to attend a couple of these.

First was the National Sport Climbing competition held by Climbing NZ at The Rockhouse at Mount Maunganui.

The second event was the National Taekwondo Championships held at Memorial Park’s Queen Elizabeth II Youth Centre.

Special acknowledgement should go to Tauranga taekwondo Master Kesi O’Neill who played a large

part in ensuring the competition came to Tauranga. He was specially acknowledged at the end of the two days competition for his work and leadership in the North Island Taekwondo Association.

I really enjoyed watching both the climbing and the taekwondo.

Both required far too much coordination for me to be any good at them though and I’ve decided to stick with running as a hobby instead.

On that note, I really enjoyed participating in the Mount Joggers Half Marathon earlier this month.

It is the kind of well-run event of a national standard that I get enthusiastic about.

The weather was good, the course well marked and attended and there were regular drink stations for the 1300-odd participants. I know the event attracted people from all over because the young man I ran with for some of the race had come down from Auckland especially for it.

Sporting events

With a new indoor events centre alongside Baypark Stadium and a new Tauranga Squash Centre in its final construction stages, I am sure we can look forward to many more high-quality sporting events in Tauranga in the months and years to come.

Orientating a successful start

The first-ever primary school orienteering event for the Western Bay is hoping to bring greater awareness and a new life to the sport.

The event, on Tuesday, June 28, sees more than 10 primary schools competing against each other to orientate themselves around the Carlton Reserve, Matua.

Matua School deputy principal Alistair Eagleson says orienteering has been a part of the school activities for the last 15 years on a low-key basis.

He felt it was “the right time to introduce the event beyond the school”.

“It appeals to those who like a challenge physically and mentally.”

Darren Ashmore from Orienteering Bay of Plenty says the regional club has been involved in the technical side of the primary schools event.

He says the primary school students will be required to navigate a map at a scale of 1:5000 – where for each centimetre, the

“Presenting to Air New Zealand was a pretty big deal,” he says.

“I spent hours preparing for it.”

He says he was “very excited” to win the junior section and encourages others to get involved.

“The awards are a great opportunity to express your ideas and get them out there. “Through the business mentoring and various other services YIA provide, getting your idea off the ground is really very possible” says Sam. This is something he is pursuing. His lips are sealed when discussion turns to his next plans though, simply saying he aims to commercialise the idea.

“But exact plans of where to next is currently confidential.”

He sounds like a seasoned business professional, but ask him about his career plans and he is unsure whether it will be in business, product development or elsewhere.

A school project could soon become a business for Tauranga Year 10 student Sam Boggiss.

On Monday, Sam won the Supreme Award for junior secondary school students in Priority One’s annual Young Innovator Awards – and feedback from judges and the airline industry has prompted him to take his winning business idea even further.

The 14-year-old won the supreme and research awards for his ‘Flight Buddy’ concept – an inflight service that records passengers’ special requirements – such as medication, diet and equalising issues.

“Students have been working with teachers and learning about the international symbols on the map which indicate terrain of the map and features around which students have to navigate to each checkpoint.”

Darren says orienteering is an increasingly popular sport, with young members participating.

“Over our summer series, we had at least 70 to 80 people each meeting during the weeknights. National participation is boasting at least 50,000 people participating nationally from all ages.

“I think it is growing – particularly amongst schools because it is an afford-

able sport when times are tough and it is pretty interesting – not just a walk or run around a course.”

Alistair says for the first year, the event is limited to 100 students from Year 5-6, and to 16 students per school so organisers could keep the number at a manageable level. Students are running either with a partner or individually depending on their confidence.

Darren says he hopes the event becomes a permanent fixture in Orienteering BOP’s calendar.

He is in the process of formalising other orienteering events for the summer.

Recruiting passionate seekers Tauranga Youth Search and Rescue is calling for people with a passion for finding lost items.

The organisation has started its recruitment drive, with the interview process beginning in October.

Coordinator and chairperson Steve Campbell says they are looking for people who have the commitment to stick out the three-year course.

“Our recruits log 650 hours a year. We meet every Wednesday night after school for a two hour training session and we

go on about 10-12 weekend camps.

“It’s pretty full on.”

The three year course involves a range of activities and sees recruits completing bush craft and navigation, with an emphasis on mapping and compass work.

“We go over search methods, with a tracking course on how to find a missing person,” says Steve.

Second-year recruits begin to develop their leadership skills, with technical aspects added to what they learnt in year one.

“They also get their Coastguard Day Skippers licence and

their Marine Radio Qualification,” says Steve.

“In the third year, we develop their leadership skills more with a Mountain Safety Leadership Course.”

Tauranga Youth Search and Rescue is looking to take on 17-20 new recruits as eight students move onto the adult course.

“During the interview process we evaluate parents and the recruits’ commitment as this is a full-on course.”

Walking a new career path Take a stroll down ‘Career Street’ on Sunday, July 10, as the Western Bay @ Work highlight event, the Tauranga Rotary Careers Expo, showcases a variety of careers available in Tauranga in an interactive way.

The Careers Expo will display and showcase information about Tauranga careers with a show of sustainability focus displayed on the walls. There will also be professionals and trades people on-site between 10am and 4pm to provide a more informal and conversational way to advise those looking to get into their field.

Professions include doctors, dentists and lawyers, as well as trades people in building, mechanics and plumbing.

Careers organiser Alison Wilson says each worker will have a sign for their career and people can walk down the ‘street’, stopping off at each person whose career path they might be inter-

ested in.

“It gives them a real perspective. Often young people have an idea about a job from what they see on TV – a glamourised version,” says Alison.

“This way they are able to ask people in that area of work and find out what subjects they need to take at school, university or polytechnic to achieve this career.”

Alison says this year’s career expo will be bigger and better than previous years, with 50 professionals and trades people attending to share their advice.

The expo has proved extremely popular in the past and Alison hopes for another successful year.

It is a different perspective to be in Christchurch It was our retiring CEO Bill Bayfields first day on the job as CEO of Canterbury Regional Council and I was there representing Bay of Plenty council.

We were joined by three other councillors, three staff and three senior kamatua for a traditional Powhiri to “hand over Bill”, when the two large aftershocks hit in Christchurch last Monday.

Our presence in Christchurch was important to strengthen our links with the CRC and to show our support to the people of Christchurch.

We had other business relating to water and land issues, but in the end we did not even get the time to discuss those.

Much has been written of these two aftershocks – the first quake did not seem that bad, but the locals were clearly highly stressed, in shock, but calm.

Rural 3 lifestyle in debate The Katikati Community Board heard an update on rural lifestyle planning from a council senior planner last week.

The concept of a Rural 3 lifestyle structure planning is a mystery and even a threat to most rural landowners, particularly those in Te Puke and Katikati who had been bypassed in favour of the Minden development. Unfortunately,

people left the meeting with very few answers and many more questions. The main questions remain:

Why rural 3 lifestyle?

Future proofing for planning was repeated a number of times. With up to 200 blocks to be developed in the Minden, this 50 year future proofing has had unbelievable attention and budgeting at the expense of other areas. Growing concern about the economic future I’m worried. I’m worried about the economic sustainability of Tauranga and particularly – employment.

My worries aren’t new – just re-sharpened by the impact of the global financial crisis.

Tauranga has enjoyed rapid and significant population growth during

the last 15-20 years. The Western Bay of Plenty sub region has been the fastest provincial growth area in New Zealand at times during

this period and we have basked in the glow of growth. But population growth fuelling a residential building boom does not-of-itself create a balanced and self-supporting present and future.

Teaching children to say I’m sorry “I’m Sorry” – two little words that or circumstance. It requires us to consider carry so much meaning – or so little. that other people think of themselves in They can be used for seeking forgiveness or simply a token gesture that requires nothing in return as a cultural politeness.

So if these too little words can portray so much or so little, is it any wonder that we confuse children about how and when they should say sorry?

Being able to understand what sorry means, if used for seeking forgiveness, we first have to learn about empathy. We need to understand that to empathise with someone, we have to not only understand what they are feeling, but also to understand what we would feel like in their situation

ways that are both similar and different to the way that we do – and that they also have emotions.

Children who are empathetic tend to do better in school, in social situations and later on in adult life. They are aware of the social graces of when to use “I’m sorry” and the differences between being sorry for an action by taking responsibility for it and being polite.

Discovering feelings

As parents and early childhood teachers, we first have to understand that toddlers, who are very egocentric, will be intent on discovering who they are and their own feelings. They are not ready to comprehend that other people have feelings too. By the time children are about four years old they begin to associate their emotions with the feelings of others. They may begin to comfort other children who are hurt with a hug.

The capacity to put oneself into another’s shoes doesn’t usually develop until a child is six or seven.

Teaching empathy, however, begins in infancy – by how the adults around young children treat them and others. Infants learn through observing how their parents and other adults react and usually by the time they are showing an interest in other children, you can begin talking about how

other people feel. Remember though that the way you show your empathy can be more important than what you say.

This natural capacity for empathy needs active encouragement from parents and adults who interact with young children in order for it to continue to develop. Younger children tend to have the emotional ability rather than a cognitive ability to pick up on another child’s feelings and match them with their own when they are beginning to display empathy.

Fine line

It is a fine line that we walk though in teaching children the contradictory notions of safety and empathy. Children need to learn to be both wary of other people and aware of other people’s feelings.

No wonder very young children can be confused when adults demand that they say ‘sorry’ for an action, when they really have no way of comprehending what sorry is let alone how and when to use it.

Dorothy the Dinosaur is coming Dorothy the Dinosaur is taking her travelling show around the country, making a stop at Taranga’s Baycourt theatre on July 13.

Growing up green Botanical Road Kindergarten is promoting a sustainable lifestyle and targeting the children early as part of an educational gardening project.

Teacher Sarah Minnell has been encouraging a group of children to develop and maintain a vegetable garden. The idea came about as part of a Yates Autumn Growing Chal-

lenge, which finishes on June 26.

“The competition enabled us to get the kids together and get them learning about veggies and how important it is to be sustainable and grow your own food.”

The garden boasts a range of vegetables, including peas, carrots and cauliflower. The children have been instrumental in the process, from planting the seeds, watering them and also updating the online blog as part of the competition.

“They have been really hands-on.

It is so educational for them and it is quite neat to see them excited when something sprouts,” says Sarah.

“They have also learnt about pests, as we had a white butterfly attack on our cauliflowers – so that was a good learning opportunity for the kids.”

The drama of hiding a wolf When a large dog bounds across the road in front of Finn’s bike it sets off a startling chain of events.

The animal collides with a car and runs off into the bush.

Finn finds the injured animal and is shocked to recognise it as Lupa, a she-wolf he’d seen in a visiting circus. He’d suspected the wolf ’s trainer, Cackles the Clown, of mistreating her. He decides to hide Lupa and care for her, even though he knows he’ll be in trouble if his mother finds out.

A royal reject Choosing wedding gifts can be difficult, but it is not often you will have your wedding gift returned to you – unless you have mailed it to Buckingham Palace.

Bay Bridal Suite owner Raye Drake sent a lucky satin and lace horseshoe – complete with paua silver fern detail – to Prince William and Catherine Middleton as a wedding gift. She was expecting to get a letter, but she wasn’t expecting to get the horseshoe back.

“We parcelled it up and sent it off with all the best wishes from the staff,” says Raye.

“Normally they sell the gifts for charity, but this time it came back with a lovely letter saying thank you very much, but the Royal couple is unable to receive this gift.”

Raye’s daughter is now going to auction off the item herself, putting the ‘royal reject’ on sale this week.

Sending Royal gifts has become a tradition for Raye, having sent Diana and Charles a similar ‘English-style’ horseshoe for their wedding. Raye’s gift was then auctioned off with other presents – all proceeds from the auction going to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“The letter was very polite. It was not signed by

“It thanked me for my generous offer, but it was not possible to accept the thoughtful gift.”

The lucky horseshoe and the Royal letter is currently in-store at Bay Bridal Suite. In wedding tradition, the horseshoe signifies luck, made out of white satin and a long strand of ribbon to hang over the bride’s arm.

New owners smelling roses Plunging into the florist industry can be a daunting task, but new owners of Grey Street Flower Company Rachel and Trevor Masters love their new business venture.

The pair recently took over ownership of the florist business and is in the process of organising personalised delivery cars and vans.

“Trevor is in charge of personalised deliveries, ensuring all flower arrangements are handdelivered,” says Rachel.

The couple have both lived in Tauranga for the last 10 years. Rachel has a background in marketing and design and Trevor in marketing and sales. The owners are joined by existing florists Linda and Bridget, who Rachel says are both “very experienced and qualified florists”.

Grey Street Flower Company specialises in classic and contemporary florist designs, as well as a range of gifts to compliment the flowers.

Nail treatments ‘a popular pamper’ The concept of getting your nails done is still a popular treatment for brides says Allure Nail Studio owner Margaret Fraser.

Margaret says the popularity is because brides see it as “pamper time” before the big day.

Brides tend to keep to the traditional manicure, while the bridesmaids can play with a bit of experimentation says Margaret.

“Bridesmaids often come in with the brides and get some amazing colours done to match their dresses.

“The brides are still very traditional with a French manicure.”

Bomb and robber scare Brendan Steve Allan is the 30 year old man facing a charge of aggravated robbery after he allegedly robbed the Kiwibank/ Post Shop on Cameron Road. The alleged robbery was on Wednesday afternoon and is tied to a prank phone call made to the Tauranga Library at 3.17pm declaring a bomb was planted there.

This bomb threat resulted in an evacuation of the hundreds of workers at the Tauranga City Council offices, library and at surrounding

inner city businesses in the Willow Street area.

As this threat was handled by emergency services, including police, Allan allegedly robbed the Kiwibank/ Post Shop at the intersection of Cameron Road and 11th Avenue. The robber of the bank wielded a knife and made off with $900. At 4pm, after police had begun scouring the roads in the vicinity of the bank, they found and arrested Allan near Turret Road.

He was later charged with aggravated robbery.

Water quality champions Improving the health of Rotorua’s 12 major lakes is the key focus for the Lakeswater Quality Society Inc. and its annual newsletter is an important tool in communicating the issues affecting the lakes.

A $2,500 BayTrust grant towards the cost of designing, printing and distributing the 2011 edition of LakesNews was therefore very welcome, according to Society chairman John Green.

“The purpose of the newsletter is to create a resource for schools and the community at large with easily interpreted news and information about lake water quality,” he says. “We’ve upgraded the publication signicantly, which has been very well received, but it represents quite a load on our funding base. We’re very grateful for BayTrust’s support because it allows us to present accurate information in a timely and professional fashion.”

Emergency rescue vehicle supported A $25,000 BayTrust grant to the New Zealand Response Team Trust means the Tauranga/Western Bay of Plenty Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team is a step closer to having the use of a much-needed, specialised emergency rescue vehicle.

NZRTT serves as a “fundraising vehicle” for USAR teams throughout the country and Secretary Kevin Nichol says that following the local team’s extended deployment in Christchurch after the February 22 earthquake, it became clear that a specialist vehicle was required to replace Western Bay USAR’s aging eet of trailer-based equipment.

The new vehicle will be a specially modied 4WD truck capable of carrying six people and two tonnes of equipment, including a 4Kva generator, emergency and scene lighting systems and EMS VHF communications. NZRTT will retain ownership of the vehicle, but it will be used, housed and maintained by Tauranga/Western Bay USAR and available for deployment, with its dedicated team, during emergencies anywhere in the country.

Peter Blanks – Trustee Peter has been a trustee for three years representing the community interests of the Taupo district and the wider BOP community. He is Chair of BayTrust’s Dillon Scholarship committee, which provides nancial assistance to people undertaking tertiary education who have signicant disabilities.

Peter has been involved in various community groups over the years. He is a co-facilitator and Trustee of Men@Work - a men’s support group, a Trustee of the recently-formed Taupo Big Brother Big Sister Charitable Trust Inc. and is involved in The Virtues Project Taupo Connection. He had a varied management background prior to owning and operating a publishing business for 20 years and now works as a Life, Relationship and Business Coach.

Peter and Ros, his wife of 45-years, have four adult children and 10 grandchildren. He enjoys Taupo, mountain-biking and working with individuals and groups who want to live their dreams and be more effective in their work, families and lives.

Tauranga Girls’ College students are demanding more action from their principal in response to last week’s attack which ended with one girl being expelled.

The attack involved students barging into a classroom, pushing a teacher out of the way and then a group of students setting upon a couple of girls.

The victims of this attack have come forward with open letters for the media and they express disappointment in only the one student being harshly punished.

Child sex abuse porn seized

Customs officials are ‘horrified’ by the amount of child sex abuse material they have seized from vessels arriving at the Port of Tauranga during a month long operation. Officials seized 14 computer hard drives and five laptop computers with objectionable material, such as child sexual abuse, during Operation League.

Tauranga Customs chief officer Steve Wineti says the material is extremely offensive and he is pleased to have been able to stop its distribution in Tauranga.

Top guitarist London bound

A Papamoa guitarist has picked his way to the top and won both a half scholarship and the accolade of rock legend Steve Vai. Gabe Dovaston received the half scholarship after finishing runner-up in the Steve Vai Scholarship worldwide guitar competition. The half scholarship is for a one year Higher Diploma Guitar Course at London’s Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, which begins in October.

Squash centre opening delayed

The opening of the Dame Susan Devoy Squash and Fitness Centre is delayed owing to wet weather.

Tauranga Squash Club president Gail Bingham says rain and cold weather has meant the concrete floors in the centre are not setting as quickly as planned for. This is preventing the laying of the court flooring and forcing the postponement of its opening until September.

ABs – due to my coaching, I have had involvement with the Bay of Plenty rugby union. One particular staff member showed me that there remain some people that will go out of their way to help.

Although not strictly to do with his role, he solved an issue, completely leaving me with a feeling of a job well done. In a world where many see their job as being simply to pass the buck onto someone else, the experience was refreshing.

Punt on business in the Bay Western Bay of Plenty businesses are being encouraged make the most of the international visitors during the Rugby World Cup. NZ2011 Business Club’s Bay of Plenty coordinator Sandra Kai Fong, who is coordinating promotional activities in the region, says there has been good interest in using the opportunity. But she urges businesses to start organising now to showcase themselves.

“We are trying to get the message out that this is an incredible opportunity – it’s not like another Christmas. This is a oneoff opportunity to showcase what we are doing in New Zealand,” says Sandra.

“People are just realising that time is coming up fast, so they need to think about what they are doing to make the most of it.”

The Business Club matches visiting business people to events that meet their interest. Along with events put on by individual businesses or groups, there are plans for events to profile Tauranga’s specialisation in marine and IT industries.

coming to the RWC can come along to the events that are being put on – and learn about opportunities here.”

Sandra says Western Bay businesses will have many chances to showcase themselves even though Tauranga is not hosting any games. She says travellers will be moving around between games and visiting on cruise ships.

A survey taken before the Christchurch earthquake showed 23,000 of the 85,000 international visitors planned to come to the Bay of Plenty, but Sandra now expects more to visit the region instead of Christchurch.

She is encouraging people to organise events that are fun and showcase their business.

Tauranga cosmetics company Bella Vi is holding makeovers for visitors in September, an event that managing director Melissa Furze hopes will win them new customers and potential distribution partners overseas.

“The RWC is such a big event – it’s an amazing opportunity for businesses to make connections overseas,” says Melissa.

After 21 years in the industry, Gary, who owns Floors and More, knows about the importance of getting flooring right. He says the fundamentals of choosing the best flooring remains the same.

To get the best for their needs, people need to know their budget and think about their current and

future household needs.

“The flooring is for today and tomorrow – so you need to consider how your household is going to change,” says Gary.

In the current tough economic times he says an increasing number of people were choosing laminate flooring.

He says a good floor gave a room a “great wow factor” which really lifts the space and adds value to a property.

He says solid timber floors continue to hold their appeal for those who can afford the higher prices.

Gary recommends leaving the

flooring material in the room where it is to be installed for at seven days prior to fitting so it can acclimatise to the conditions. This will avoid problems arising from materials expanding or contracting due to differences in temperature.

When choosing the right flooring, taking a sample home and having a close look at it at different times of the day, as the appearance will change with the light.

Importantly, Gary urges people to ask for advice from flooring specialists to help them make the best choice.

On a mission to help Vanuatu Fixing and maintaining building tools is on the agenda for a group from Bethlehem Community Church, who are leaving tomorrow, Saturday June 25, for a two week visionary trip to Vanuatu’s Tanna Island.

Revised act The new Unit Titles Act 2010 came into force on Wednesday, June 20.

The act makes several changes, updating and modernising legislation that has been in force since 1972.

The Unit Titles Act is the law governing building developments – where multiple owners hold a type of property ownership known as a unit title. Such building developments are typically apartment blocks, townhouses, office blocks and industrial or retail complexes.

Unit owners in a unit title development own a defined part of the building, such as an apartment and may have shared ownership in common areas such as lifts, lobbies or driveways.

Collectively, all the unit owners in a building development make up a body corporate. The body corporate has responsibility for a range of management, financial and administrative matters relating to the common property and to the building as a whole.

Since 1972, when the Act first came into force, there have been major changes in the number, scale and nature of property developments in New Zealand. The Act has therefore become out-dated and is no longer able to provide a sound basis for the creation and sustainable management of intensive, multi-unit developments. Healthy lunchbox treats Sometimes playing around with a recipe can deliver great results.

At the cafe we found a cookie recipe in a magazine that we thought might work as a slice – and it’s been a huge success. Not too heavy, not too sweet, but healthy, tasty and a good low GI energy source.

Many people have a sweet tooth, so finding something that fulfils that need for a sweet, but will actually keep you going for a while and even help keep you regular, is a bonus. Somehow this is even more important in winter – when we need internal fuel to help keep us warm. Because it uses honey instead of sugar you get all the health benefits that this natural wonder-food delivers too.

With only four main ingredients, plus whatever you want to sprinkle on top, it’s a cinch to make at home and is a great, cheaper alternative to commercial muesli bars.

Tahini muesli bars Ingredients 3 cups rolled oats 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped 2/3 cup runny honey, warmed a little 2/3 cup tahini Dried apricots, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds or whatever you want to sprinkle on top.

Method Preheat the oven to 180 degrees, spray and line a sponge roll tin with baking paper.

Mix oats and walnuts in a bowl, then add the honey and tahini and mix well. Spread evenly in the tin and sprinkle with your desired topping.

Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden. It will harden a bit on cooling, but remain sticky in the middle. If you would prefer it crunchy, cook a little longer.

A chip of the old block The last week has been a little quiet down here on The Strand and I do not have a lot to crow about, except the boss’s cooking skills.

The man made such a fuss – and I must say a fantastic job – of cooking my first retrieved duck.

According to him, it’s something to do with the way you handle the breasts. Okay then, enough of the fondling. It inspired me to bring home many more for the deprived old fella.

Unfortunately, there has been a distinct shortage of fowl falling out of the sky this week though, so to keep in training I have had to improvise.

You would not believe the struggle this pine bird put up and you can imagine the confusion I was under when it barked. Never mind – as I am ready for most things that get thrown at me. I learnt from a young age that when the boss gets bored, the pine cones are not even safe.

I am looking forward to see how he fillets and plucks this one, obviously the only recipe I can think of is “Plank and Chips”, or maybe he will just put another log on the fire and cook up some bacon and beans.

He has promised me that we will be out and about before the season ends, to hone my chipping skills, and maybe haul in the odd fowl or two before I can rest for another 11 months.

I have to tell you though, I love being out in the fresh air, the wet and cold and being with my best mates, ah it’s why we are man’s best friend.

Now onwards and upwards, we are running a competition sponsored by my good mates at Animal Antics worth a whopping $500 – these are the good people who donated so much pet food to all the “cuzzies” in Christchurch.

My bestest, dearly departed mate Big D and I have one recorded from early last year. It is Diesel and I cavorting around the fridge and him singing with delight. We have titled it “The Thriller by The Chiller”.

On that chord I must say goodbye for another week. Rest easy out there – and someone please cut the palm fronds on The Strand as the boss’s face (no oil painting anyway) is starting to look like a patch work quilt, he has so many scratches from them.

How to cook the perfect steak Prepare the steaks Allow to come to room temperature (for about 20 minutes).

Preheat your pan Heat a griddle or frying pan over a high heat until hot, but not smoking. (If the pan is too hot, the outside will burn before the inside is done.)

Brush the steaks with oil, or pour a little oil into the pan, and season if desired. (Canola or groundnut oil is best.)

When you place the steaks in the pan, a "sizzle" will tell you if it’s hot enough.

Cook to your liking For a medium steak: Cook on one side without touching for 3-4 minutes, then reduce to a medium heat and cook for another 2-3 minutes.

Gently turn the steak over with a pair of tongs (don’t pierce it), and cook for a further 6 minutes. (You can vary the times here.)

To test for doneness, press the steak gently with the tip of your finger. Rare should be soft and supple, well done firm, and medium in between.

Rest your steaks Resting is as important as cooking. It allows the meat to become warm, moist and tender all the way through.

Remove from the pan, place on a rack and cover with foil and leave in a warm place for up to 10 minutes.

Remember it is always better to over-rest your steaks than to under-rest them.

Serve your steaks on hot dinner plates, and enjoy.

Guide to steak cooking times Rare: 1-2 minutes per side - rest for 6-8 minutes Medium rare: 2-2.5 minutes per side - rest for 5 minutes Medium: 3 minutes per side - rest for 4 minutes Well done: 4.5 minutes per side - rest for 1 minute.

Steak with pine nut and mushroom sauce Sauce ingredients: 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 onion, chopped finely 250g mushrooms, finely sliced 1 cup cream (250ml) 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated 60g pine nuts 100g toasted sultanas Salt and pepper To make the sauce: Heat oil in large fry pan over medium heat and cook garlic and

onion for 3-4 minutes or until soft.

Add mushrooms and cook a further 5 minutes or until just tender.

Stir in cream, half the cheese, pine nuts and sultanas and simmer gently until heated through. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Pan-fry the steak to your liking (see above for the way to cook the perfect steak.) Add sauce, sprinkle the rest of the cheese and tuck in!

Once done, it is then easy to get it out every year and keep it up to date.

A small amount of time spent now can make a big difference later.

Dealing the with winter blues?

With winter approaching I am again concerned about my father who every winter seems to get somewhat depressed and then a number of illnesses start occurring. Last year he ended up in hospital for four weeks. Is there anything we can do to avoid this occurring?

First, I trust you have contacted your father’s GP who will have a fuller picture of his history and may have some useful suggestions. If not, please do this, as you will receive some very good advice.

In the meantime, there are a number of things to consider. Ensuring your father has a well-balanced and nutritional diet and that he is eating regularly is first and foremost. If he is not doing this or does not have access to meals and food this is the first thing I would change. Perhaps a visit to somewhere like the RSA for a cheap meal and social

experience on a regular basis may help.

Alternatively, there are all sorts of options of delivered meals or a caregiver could come and cook regular meals. Also supplements of Vitamins such as B, C and spirulina are all good options to consider.

I would try to make sure your father is getting a little exercise most days and a decent amount of sunshine as well. If he is not getting much sunshine, a Vitamin D supplement is something you definitely should

consider. It has been found that a lack of Vitamin D is collated to increased falls and therefore deteriorating health. If your father is not big on exercise, try to encourage him to get up and sit back down from his seat often and repeatedly in a day. This has been proven to be one of the most effective antifalls exercises. The slower he does it and the more often, the better.

Also, if he is willing, it would be good for him to look at some social organisations to help his mental wellbeing. Probus, the RSA, Age Concern, U3A – there are any variety of groups out there.

Good luck – winter is a time for increased blues, illnesses and isolation. You are right to be looking at putting preventative measures in early. I commend you on your foresight.

My favourite motivational cartoon is the one where a large bird is in the process of swallowing a frog, but the frog, head halfway down the bird’s throat, is choking the bird with its hands preventing the bird from swallowing. The caption predictably is: “Never, never give up”!

Unfortunately I get to speak to many people facing health challenges who seem to have given up – without really investigating and trying all available options.

One of my favourite people I help is a man who contacted me over a decade ago – then in his mid 80’s complaining about various problems and in his own words he said he “thought he was on his way out”.

He called yesterday for another

three month supply of the antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and Omega 3, which he believes have helped him live in good health for another decade. He recently celebrated his 95th birthday.

My advice to people who are unwell is to look at all your options and work through them. I spoke to someone yesterday with a serious form of cancer with a very uncertain prognosis. Supporting young women through breast cancer While 80 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50, a significant number of women are affected in their 40s, 30s and even their 20s.

Support is helpful for younger women as they can often struggle to deal with issues such as the effect

on their children, their roles as mothers, appearance, fitness, sexuality and relationships.

Breast Cancer Support Tauranga has a support group particularly aimed at women under 50 who have or have had breast cancer – although older women who developed breast cancer under 50 are also welcome to participate.

Far from being a ‘pity party’, the group aims to gather women who have shared a similar experience, in a friendly, social environment where they can talk, ask questions and contribute

Some of the women may be newly diagnosed and others several years down the track, post treatment. Some may have had minor surgery, others major surgery and reconstruction, perhaps combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This range of experiences can be really helpful in finding out how others have coped and go on with life ‘after cancer’.

Karen Roelofse and Fiona McAllister are hosting the next Younger Women’s group event on Wednesday, June 29 at 7pm at 56 Christopher Street. Both are trained support visitors for Breast Cancer Support Tauranga and like all support visitors, have had breast cancer themselves.

Drinks and nibbles are provided and the evening is a chance for women to mix and mingle and contribute ideas on what they would like from the group. Sandra Crawford will also share some of the highlights from the ‘Younger Women Affected by Breast Cancer Conference’ she attended in Florida in February.

Today, however, my health column is going to touch on economics in an effort to get the attention of some of you I wish to effect change in.

Are you concerned about your ability to earn well into the future or how New Zealand is going to maintain and sustain a viable economy? I am no economist and certainly know very little about ‘the state of the nation’, but I know health.

I know it costs this country to look after people who have diseases and disorders. I know that our economy cannot afford to keep the current model through which we manage health and healthcare. It is not sustainable into the future. We cannot keep funding illness and post episode interventions.

We must start funding prevention – I believe health care will become more and more the responsibility of the individual.

There are many business people out there who have or are heading for heart disease or may already have had a heart attack. It is always interesting for me

when talking to the business community about heart disease because everyone has a story about ‘so-and-so’ who “just had a heart attack” or “just had bypass surgery” or “just had three stents put in at Waikato Hospital”.

I get the feeling it is quite normal to have heart disease and or know someone who’s had a heart attack.

What gets me up on my soap box though is this… heart disease, surgeries to intervene against heart disease and the medications that are prescribed to people with the condition, cost this country tens of millions of dollars every year. This is part of the unsustainability of the current health funding approach. We cannot continue to fund illness.

We need to fund lifestyle and education programmes – nutrition and activity – that prevent these things from happening in the first place.

It cannot be argued that we will be able to fund health like we currently are, with our ageing population that is set to increase significantly during the next 40 years. Something has got to give – and it’s likely to be people’s overworked hearts and the taxpayers’ pocket.

It costs on average $25,000 for a coronary artery bypass surgery in this country. Up to 1000 people have bypass surgery every year and that number is not looking like changing anytime soon. Coronary angioplasty is the other big heart intervention surgery at an average cost of $10,000 each – received by approximately 14,000 people a year.

Are you a business person in your 40s or older, concerned about your economic future – your ability to earn a living – and concerned about New Zealand’s future economic position? Get your heart checked and become, in a small way, part of the solution. Even if you think you are fit and healthy and lead a fairly good lifestyle, if you are in business and under a certain amount of stress, than you are a prime candidate for heart disease.

It costs significantly less to fund preventative measures against heart disease and heart attacks than to fund a person once they have it. Preventative medicine is the way of the future.

We must fund wellness not illness. As with a good business, we must be proactive, not reactive.

Sore Throats Aren’t Cool!

Kawerau and Murupara Rheumatic Fever Prevention Campaigns officially launched Another important step towards reducing rheumatic fever among Bay of Plenty children was taken with the official launches of school-based throat swabbing programmes in Kawerau and Murupara.

Part of a Baywide drive to reduce this preventable disease, the programme involves community health workers visiting schools, asking children if they have a sore throat and offering a throat swab as required. If ‘strep throat’ is detected, a 10 day course of antibiotics is provided to prevent rheumatic fever from developing.

The Kawerau programme, led by Eastern Bay Primary Health Alliance, was officially launched at Kawerau South School on Friday 20th May

The Heart Foundation and the creators of bro’ Town, a popular television comedy series, have developed a ‘Sore throats aren’t cool!’ comic and interactive poster.

The resources have been specifically developed for children and can be used by schools and health professionals to increase awareness and understanding of rheumatic fever.

The Murupara programme, led by Te Ika Whenua Hauora, was launched at Te Kura Kaupapa Motuhake O Tawhiuau on Friday 10th June by Tariana Turia, Associate Minister of Health and Co-Leader of the Maori Party.

The programmes are supported by the Bay of Plenty District Health Board and Toi Te Ora – Public Health Service.

Both Ministers acknowledged the three children who have made a great contribution to raising awareness locally. Mersayde Akuhata from Murupara, Michael Savage from Kawerau and Tutohia Huriwaka from Opotiki, feature in the pamphlets and share their stories about rheumatic fever.

Rheumatic fever often starts with a sore throat (a streptococcal infection). A few weeks later the child may develop sore or swollen joints, skin rash, fever, stomach pain and jerky movements. Although these symptoms may disappear, the heart valves may be damaged and this damage may be permanent. A child diagnosed with rheumatic fever requires long-term follow up including monthly injections of Penicillin to stop further attacks.

“Fortunately, rheumatic fever is preventable, provided sore throats are treated correctly. If your child complains of a sore throat take them to the local health centre to be checked. If a ‘strep throat’ is diagnosed, the doctor will usually prescribe a 10 day course of antibiotics,” says Dr Jim Miller, Medical Officer of Health for Toi Te Ora – Public Health Service.

Inappropriate for the CEO I was pleased that the recent resolution proposed by Cr Rick Curach (and only supported by Cr Catherine Stewart) that the new CEO be empowered to reduce Council expenditure by $3 million was defeated as it remains entirely inappropriate for the CEO to be placed in this position.

I remain confident that the new CEO will undertake a thorough review of all areas of Council expenditure, in order to see where possible savings can be made, it is however NOT up to the CEO to slash services, provided to ratepayers as this is the domain of the councillors who are elected every 3 years to run the city and make these decisions.

Had Cr Curach’s resolution been passed and the council, through the CEO, had to follow the councillors instruction and make immediate savings of $3 million the problem is, WHERE would the CEO and staff decide where

those required savings would be made?

Imagine if in order to fulfil this requirement that the CEO, and staff, decided to close the swimming pools, or the neighbourhood parks or community centres or not undertake maintenance on roads or reduce maintenance of sports grounds and reserves or cut storm water protection measures etc etc the community would be in an uproar and quite rightfully so.

The information for the Annual Plan would have been provided to all councillors, prior to last Christmas, and in order for these two councillors to achieve their desired goals they could have done the research, spoken to staff and gained the support of the community and other councillors...... but then of course that would have involved hard work.

Programme did SPCA no favours Whilst watching the TV program ‘Make the Politician Work’ on Sunday, which showed Simon Bridges at an Auckland SPCA Centre, I was appalled at the insensitive treatment of the dogs portrayed.

Hopefully, this is not an example of most SPCA’s – certainly not ours in Tauranga, where I am a volunteer helper.

Dogs with a traumatic past need rehabilitation training before being re-homed and should certainly never be allowed to go to a home with children

unless the parents are fully capable of teaching their children how to respect their animals.

Never let a child near a dog while feeding, or let it roam around with food in its hand to tempt a dog. It’s just not fair, as the dog always gets the blame.

Simon Bridges was the instigator of the bill recently passed through Parliament recommending greater punishment for animal abusers, and I applaud him for that, but, he has done neither himself nor the SPCA any favours with this programme. (Abridged) Jean Page, Oropi.

No to Cronin’s gravy train Eleven Regional Council Representatives were last week required to attend a welcoming in Christchurch because of Protocol - Yeah Right!

Mr Bayfield was an outstanding CEO of the BOP Regional Council who was fittingly farewelled for someone of his mana. It was then inappropriate for the Chair of the BOP Regional Council John Cronin, along with an entourage of 10 others, to travel to a ceremony in Christchurch to welcome Mr Bayfield to his next job - at our expense!

I would like to challenge Mr Cronin to come out from behind his protocol and defend the indefensible.

This action by Mr Cronin was poor judgement and insensitive extravagance when so many struggle to pay their increasing rates. I, along with many, say no more to Cronin’s Gravy Train.

Ignorance or arrogance of native people of land

TCC had a meeting last week about “Procurement”, this is about how TCC obtains and pays for services, sadly there were only three submissions, however the policy is not the problem, it is the governance and administration of the policy that is the weak link resulting in potential excess cost to TCC (Bill Faulkner already acknowledges the excess costs).

In its tendering process TCC currently uses what is called “weighted attributes”, the price only has maybe 20% impact on the final decision, the rest is TCC staff “ticking boxes” and of course most of that is subjective.

The Mayor’s letter of 15/3/06 to all ratepayers tried to explain why there was going to be one year with a ”huge” rates increase. The letter even said that: “…the year ending June 2007 there is a significant increase. After that, over the following nine years, the increase is more modest.”

There are a lot of blogs on Sunlive which I have been following with great interest, it includes: The next 10 years of rate increases (actual in brackets) are: 2007 16.40%, 2008 4.55%(14.6%), 2009 3.57% (10.90%), 2010 3.53%(12.8%), 2011 4.79% (12.0%), 2012 -0.08% (11.0%+), 2013 2.40%, 2014 3.93%, 2015 2.55%, 2016 2.20%.

On 17/9/10 the Mayor said (the day voting papers arrived, no other Coun-

cillor seemed to know about it) that a rate rise of 17.8% +5% contingency is ’unsustainable’ and TCC staff would report on this in December-2010, maybe a 6-8% increase only? The only thing Council appear to have done is NOT MAKE debt repayments by about $6 million or so, all that does is make a bigger problem “go away” until next year, that has not solved anything nor changed anything at all.

The rate increases planned for 10 years all happened in the first three years?

We should actually be looking at a rate decrease in 2012 according to the Mayors 15/3/06 letter, since then interest rates have dropped significantly by almost 50%, Council’s single biggest cost annually, what’s gone so wrong?

Hospital waiting made me a burden In May 2008 my doctor referred me to the hospital for a biopsy on my prostate, a letter from the hospital saying I will get an appointment within three months. After three months I rang to see if they could tell me when I would be getting the appointment, I was told soon, but on 20 Sept I was at A & E with a bladder retention, a catheter was fitted after waiting in pain for two hours, in Oct my appointment came for Nov, it was 12 weeks before I had a op.

In all I had five visits to A&E, and two stays in hospital.

I wonder if I had been seen sooner I would not have been a burden on the health service. This week I went to the doctor and was referred to the hospital and with in three days I had a appointment for next week. Is this because the new government has done what it said it would do and got rid of the pen pushers, and put in more medical staff.

I must also say that I have been waiting for years for a knee replacement and I got that done last year, am I lucky or have things changed? (abridged) E.K.Mills, Tauranga.

No more time to debate tsunami issues As part of the Annual Plan Process, Council will be entering into another lengthy debate on the ‘vexed’ issue re: the above.

Any High School dictionary will give the meaning of ‘vexed’ as an annoying, much discussed issue, thus another committee will be formed.

I suggest the new town clerk (CEO) immediately reduce TCC staff numbers from 550 to less than 450, so the wages money be used to install the above system ‘yesterday’.

Now, I suggest the new town clerk (CEO) call upon 11 Papamoa “Street Lock-In” entrepreneurial men and women to form a team, use the staff reduction wages and organise the above Tsunami warning Hawaii system...

There is no more time left to carry on more debate “Determining Tsunami warning and Risk Management”, most Council persons do not have sufficient competence to deal with this urgent Tsunami warning requirement.

Jesus versus bin Laden In answering the letter regarding the similarity between Jesus Christ and Osama Bin Laden, the only similarity between the two is that Osama Bin Laden was a man and Jesus Christ the Messiah appeared as a man.

Bin Laden has gone never to return. Jesus the Messiah is going to return. Many prophesies have already been fulfilled telling of the event. The most glaring, being Israel become a nation again which it did in 1948.

Bin Laden was a man of violence. Jesus was a man of love and peace, who even when after being physically abused, then nailed to a cross prayed, “Father forgive them, they don’t know what they’re doing.”

Unfortunately people who criticise the Christ often have more of Bin Laden’s characteristics, all of whom he died for including me.

Youth rates ‘madness’ A child is from birth to 16 years of age. A youth is a person form the age of 16 to 19. From 19 onwards one is an adult.

I am a National supporter and I am outraged that a Govt would be so irresponsible to even consider such a suggestion as raising the age of the application of Youth rates. Many people Over 20 are married and certainly many will have children. How in God’s name do they think such people will survive on Youth rates.

This will relieve employers of some cost but will cost the country more as the Govt would have to support people with children under the age of 24.

Slap in face for National Bob Clarkson’s defection to the ACT Party is a huge slap in the face for the National Party. Anyone who is acquainted with Bob knows that although he is a little rugged around the edges he is an enormously successful businessman.

Not someone who inherited his wealth but someone who made it through hard toil a level head and learned by his mistakes. His knowledge of the building industry and the services that go with it are probably unparalleled in this city hence his nickname “Bob The Builder”. As our member several years ago I contacted Bob regarding our street lights which had been burning day and nights for days at a time when the power companies were warning us the lakes were low and electricity precious.

He had the problem temporarily fixed within several hours something the Council, Trust Power and Powerco seemed reluctant to do. Besides this Bob has also contributed a considerable amount of money for support systems to help the Merivale people without asking for any public recognition. Mary Brookes should consider these factors before rushing into print criticising Bob. With Christchurch lying in a pile of rubble and having to rebuilt he might just have more to offer the country at the moment than someone who seems to be obsessed with small dogs.

Clarence was, in many ways, the yin to Springsteen’s yang, the big black man who played with the little white boy. Their musical partnership spanned nearly 40 years.

He was never the most technical of sax players, but he understood the dynamics of a solo, where to lay back, when to explode and – like all great soloists – he knew how to create something memorable. The solos on ‘Born To Run’ or ‘Jungleland’ didn’t change much over the years: they were perfect as originally conceived. He played unforgettable breaks on Aretha Franklin’s ‘Freeway of Love’ and songs for others.

There’s also a Kiwi connection. Clarence recorded the Springsteen song ‘Saving Up’ for one of his rare solo albums, a version later covered by, and a big hit for, Sonny Day. I listened to Springsteen a lot in the early days. I discovered him around the time of Born To Run and loved the ballsy literate nature of his songs and the colourful muscular band.

Born In The USA started me moving away from him and the string of later ‘80s and ‘90s albums left me cold.

Everything seemed overproduced and overblown. I started listening to more acoustic and world music (Africa, Ireland, Iceland, it all seemed exotic at the time) and Springsteen’s stuff seemed a relic of corporate rock.

Where Springsteen’s ‘Badlands’ had once been a vision of

America, now all I heard was bombast; Tom Wait’s darker more twisted imagination pointed to weirder and more interesting back-roads.

I hated The Rising album, his reflection on the 9/11 attacks. Too big, too pompous. The sound put me off so much I didn’t really even hear the songs. And what with George Bush and all I was a bit off America in general.

When Springsteen toured here five years ago I didn’t buy a ticket. Had no interest.

Years ago I would have crawled across cut glass to see him, but not now. Then my brother gave me a ticket and I spent the whole drive to Auckland listening to The Rising and trying to like it.

No, still hated it.

It was raining intermittently at Western Springs and I bitched about Springsteen for an hour while we waited and got slowly soaked. Eventually my brother told me to shut up, though not in those words and not as politely.

Then Springsteen came on and I was converted.

He opened with a bleak take on ‘Born In The USA’, played solo on an acoustic slide guitar. Here was the song in all its depressed glory, a revelation. Then the band joined and they went into a joyously loose ‘Have You Ever Seen The Rain’ – not a regular part of the show – just especially for us rain-drenched punters. And so it went. The band was magnificent but, most of all, it was the vibe.

Springsteen has a way on stage that is unique. He just seems to be having so much damn fun. He did his usual guitar run across the front of the stage finishing with a leap onto his knees. The front of the stage was wet. He fell flat on his ass. So he got up, laughed, waved happily at the crowd and did it again. And fell on his ass again. Still laughing he had a third crack and this time nailed it: the perfect rock ‘n’ roll move, but done with humour and selfawareness. It felt real and didn’t seem in any way cheesy. The audience went wild.

The whole show was like that: fresh, joyful, moving, fun and simultaneously fantastic heavy duty rock ‘n’ roll.

And that was why Clarence was perfect for Bruce. He was big – six foot five – and scary-looking. But in that huge muscular black frame was a teddy bear, a gentle giant who couldn’t help grinning with pleasure and who just wanted to play and to love and to be loved.

He was the essence of the whole show because his personality was that of the show – big and intimidating from the outside but warm, friendly and inclusive inside.

No one will replace Clarence Clemons.

They broke the mould when they made the Big Man.

Dir: Joann Sfar. Starring: Eric Elmosnino, Lucy Gordon, Laetitia Casta Serge Gainsbourg made little impact outside France, though most will probably have heard his most well-known song ‘Je T’Aime… Moi Non Plus’.

If that name rings no bells, let me mention that it is a charming organ instrumental with sexy French words and orgasmic female noises.

It was banned widely.

In France, however, he was – for over 30 years – a living legend, bigger than Dylan and Mick Jagger combined and a man who regularly scandalised the country. He was a strangely ugly singer/songwriter of Corsican descent whose very public girlfriends included Brigitte Bardot, Julie Greco and Jane Birkin.

There was a lot of hype surrounding Sanctum (), what with its 3D caving and the big producer’s credit for James Cameron. It’s hard to work out why. A group of cave divers get trapped in a cave after bad weather. They have to find a way out. The cast are a motley bunch of clichés – irresponsible millionaire, novice girlfriend, expert caver, his son (they don’t get on), loyal sidekick – and the plot ticks along without surprises.

One particularly unpleasant drowning shows the level of tension the film aspires to but it’s hard to care about these characters. Where are the flesh-eating monsters from The Descent when you need them?

Nicolas Cage models his latest unlikely wig in Season of the Witch () and trudges through medieval Europe. He and Ron Pearlman have deserted from the crusades for noble reasons and are charged with escorting a probable witch to an improbable castle in order to end the plague and save the world, etc. There was a lot of that going on at the time if recent films are to be believed. This was apparently sanitised in order to get a lower censor rating

And this film is equally wonderful and contradictory, part fantasy, part biography.

Director Sfar is also an artist and uses his graphics to portray Gainsbourg’s insecurities and fears with giant puppets. The film dwells on both his upbringing, Jewish, in Nazi-occupied Paris, and his ‘50s and ‘60s success as a songwriter and celebrity. It is lively, imaginative, and recreates its eras with verve. The cast are solidly brilliant from Almosnino’s uncanny Gainsbourg to perfect takes on Bardot and Birkin.

I realise this is a hard sell for those coming new to Serge but I’d urge you to take a leap and watch Gainsbourg. It is a fascinating and fascinatingly-made film.

The remarkably named Benedict Cumberbatch and Bilbo Baggins himself, Martin Freeman, make a fine pairing as Holmes and Watson respectively, while the subtext questioning Holmes’ possibly unhealthy attraction to crime adds depth. The third story here ends with a cliffhanger but, fear not, more Sherlock is promised next year.

Painting exhibiting reflects change An exclusive exhibition at the Tauranga Art Gallery features 23 paintings from New Zealand artists from the 19th and 20th centuries – reflecting the dramatic changes that occurred in New Zealand art during that period.

Painting New Zealand Art from Te Papa 1890 –1950 features paintings from the collection of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Gallery director Penelope Jackson says, “it’s not every day you get such a fabulous line up of great artists in Tauranga”.

“We’re very lucky Te Papa have agreed to this loan. It wasn’t an easy undertaking getting this exhibition here, but I think very worthwhile.”

During the featured time period artists arrived from overseas with new ideas, while New Zea-

For instance, Rhona Haszard’s ‘Finistere’, whose family came from Waihi, is a delightful bird’s eye view of a Mediterranean bay on a summer’s day.

Sydney Lough Thompson’s ‘Almond tree at Peille’ is a fine example of impressionism painted by an artist who divided his year between Oxford in North Canterbury, New Zealand and the south of France.

This exhibition introduces those known as the first generation of New Zealand artists such as Dorothy Kate Richmond and Frances Hodgkins. Both women made art their career, travelling together in Europe searching for new painting subjects.

several recent acquisitions – offering a glimpse of how Te Papa’s art collection has evolved over time.

This exhibition is a real treat for Tauranga’s audience – some of these works have not been shown since the nation’s collection was housed and exhibited at the former National Art Gallery in Wellington.

The exhibit is on display at Tauranga Art Gallery from June 22 to August 21, presented with the assistance of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Council donates ornate vase Fundraising efforts for Kiwi Can have got a boost with the donation of an ornate Japanese vase from Tauranga City Council.

Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby says the donation of the vase to the Treasured Art charity sale was converting the surplus art into support for the youth charity.

He says the council’s art collection had been reviewed on the basis of every piece’s connection to the city and the vase – which came from a local family and was displayed in the council chamber foyer – was found to have “no direct connection”.

“So when we were approached about supporting Treasured Art we decided to donate this piece.”

Stuart congratulated Tauranga Sunrise Rotary Club on organising the fundraising art sale for Kiwi Can, saying he believed the life skills programme for primary and intermediate students helped make “real differences” in children’s lives.

He says the council had donated two surplus paintings to last year’s Treasured Art exhibition and would consider

Something in the water?

A wave of young students’ successes has prompted residents to ask if there is something in the water on Campbell Road.

At least 20 Mount Maunganui Intermediate students who all live on Campbell Road have emerged top of their game in a sporting event recently.

Parent and Campbell Road resident Juliet Roper says the discovery came about through a neighbourly chat.

“The kids walk together to school often and all look out for one another and it helps that they see their parents frequently, socialising together,” says Juliet.

“We joke that all the kids are often out playing up and down the road, creating their own fun like we did as kids, back in the day, so

maybe their similarities come from that.”

Juliet’s daughters, Lily and Pipi, both placed first in their age group at the school cross country and she says the pair is very proud of each other.

“Pipi has big shoes to fill as Lily is very sporty and has a bit of a reputation for her sport. “Pipi is way more casual about sport and took us all by surprise that she did so well.”

Bay Canadians celebrate National Day Canadians living in the Bay of Plenty are getting together to celebrate Canada’s national day on July 1.

A group of about 30 people and their families, who are Canadian-born or have lived in the country for long periods, have been meeting for several years in the Bay to share a meal and renew familiar connections.

Kiwi Canadian Jackie Napier lived in Canada for many years before returning to New Zealand. She says the group began at her place and has expanded since then.

“Everyone that comes along has a Canadian connection. I lived in Canada for a long time and my co-organiser Cynthia is a Canadian who now lives in New Zealand,” says Jackie.

“We get all kinds of people turn up; we had this delightful elderly couple come along for years. She was a Canadian war bride. So there are all kinds of great stories.”

Jackie says at the next meeting there is sure to be plenty of conversation about the recent Canadian Federal elections and the sad performance of the Vancouver Canucks in the recent Stanley Cup (ice hockey) finals.

“This iconic competition fires up thousands of supporters throughout the long Canadian winter and we thought this year would bring the cup home to Canada, but not to be.”
