It’s a wagon, but not as we know it
Subaru Levorg In the never-ending quest to find new names that are legally kosher and don’t sound rude in foreign languages, Subaru’s latest offering has a name with a certain ‘Star Trek Next Generation’ quality about it. Subaru’s Levorg is a car to recapture the hearts and minds of brand loyalists like me, who are still attached to their Legacy GT wagons. Owning three Subaru Legacy GT wagons in my lifetime, I jumped at the chance to test drive the new Subaru Levorg from Farmer Auto Village. If you’ve never had the pleasure of driving a Subaru, do yourself a favour and test drive one before you buy your next car – you won’t be disappointed. They are very quick, handle like they’re on rails and surprisingly affordable.
the Levorg is not only closer in size to the fourth-generation Legacy, it’s actually roomier inside. “Add all the goodness of WRX mechanicals and you have an exciting new Subaru that offers both sports performance and family sized comfort,” says Darrel. And he was right, considering its small footprint the Levorg is quite roomy. There’s more room for rear-seat occupants too with more space in the back seat than practically any vehicle in the Subaru range this side of an Outback or Legacy.
On our way out to meet this week’s Bay Driver, Blair Anderson, of Waimarino Adventure Park and Kayak Tours, we got a chance to really open up the throttle on Takitimu Drive. And just like my Legacy of old, the Levorg goes hard! The highlight had to be the digital boost gauge in the Bigger than it looks Farmer Auto Village’s Subaru brand special- centre of the dashboard. It just looks so cool but does ist Darrel Nicholson says while based on the have the tendency to make you want current Impreza platform, to plant your foot every time you take off. Subaru’s trademark boxer engine delivers solid performance right up to the red-line, but is also very refined. At cruising speed it’s not conspicuously loud, but it does generate the beat typical of ce n la g a atures at fe ed g d ar te h h a WRX engine when you decide g -c li o High e turb .0 DIT litr 2 to hoof it. The load floor sits high due to the drivetrain components for the rear wheels, which makes loading from waist height easy. He also noted the fix points on the roof rails for the easy fitting of roof racks. “Perfect for the kayaks and paddle boards,” says Blair.
Adventure time!
The verdict
Blair instantly fell in love with the Levorg, and Charlotte shared with me a story as to why. Apparently, when they first met Blair’s dream was to have $1 million in the bank, own a business and a Subaru by the time he was 30. He did get a Subaru and bought the business, as I understand, but I think he’s still chasing the million dollars. “Who needs a million dollars when you live in paradise?” I asked Blair. He and Charlotte live on-site on the banks of the Wairoa River, which made for a stunning backdrop for our Levorg photo shoot. And being active, sporty and outdoor types they were perfectly suited to test drive this symmetrical All Wheel Drive wagon. Blair says being a wagon, the Levorg would be ideal to carry large loads from time to time. He noted the finger pulls in the luggage compartment for the folding rear seats, which sit almost flat when lowered.
The Levorg has been assembled with care, featuring soft-touch and textured finishing throughout, along with piano gloss decorative trim. Controls like the wipers and indicator stalks are softly damped in use and the doors close quietly and with little thrust required. When it comes to safety, ANCAP has already settled on a five-star score for the Levorg. It also comes standard with EyeSight v3.0 – Subaru’s most significant leap in crash prevention since the invention of symmetrical All Wheel Drive. EyeSight is an extra set of eyes on the road, and if need be, an extra foot on the brake when you drive. Depending on who you are insured with, you may even be eligible for additional savings on your car insurance just by having this technology in your car. That’s how good it is! All up, the Levorg is a very convincing package in terms of pricing, packaging, performance and traction – especially for those like me, who are already inclined to the Subaru brand. Matt Batchelor

Phil is ready for last round of NZRC Phil Campbell didn’t win back his home crown at the Tauranga Clubman’s Rally on July 17. But claiming second place has given him a confidence boost ahead next month’s last round of the New Zealand Rally Championship. Currently, in ninth place out of about 40 NZ-registered cars in the NZRC, only the Coromandel’s Goldrush Rally on August 20 is left. And Phil is ready to gun it. “The car was working well and it’s always a lot easier going into the national rally championship after having a good result,” says the Tauranga driver, who rallies with his partner off the road Venita Fabbro. “It means we can go out there and we know everything is working and we’ll be up to full speed straight away.” Phil in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo9, who went into this month’s clubman’s rally as the back-to-back winner, teamed up with fellow Tauranga local Mitch James for the event. The pair made a solid start on stage one, setting the second fastest time, and upped the pace on stage two, edging closer to the pace-setter. A breakthrough fastest time on stage three offered hope of regaining the time given up to the leader during the previous two stages. But the damage had been done; despite another stage win combined with five second-fastest times, they were unable to catch Canterbury driver Matt Summerfield. Tauranga’s Wayne Pittams in a Subaru Impreza claimed third place, while Tauranga’s Richard Rau in his Mazda
323 GTX took fourth overall and claimed novice driver honours. Looking ahead Phil, who has raced the Goldrush Rally for the last two years, says it’s a “pretty cool rally”. “Whitianga is a cruisy holiday town, it’s a pretty relaxed atmosphere for the rally and there’s some real good public roads up there. So we always look forward to going each year.” Phil, who admits his current ninth placing is behind on his second overall in 2015, says it’s been a tough year. Having a big crash at the NZ Hillclimb Championships one week before the first round of this year’s NZRC possibly “knocked my confidence a little bit and also put some financial pressure on us as well”. “Because I had to spend so much fixing the car for that first round I haven’t been able to take much risk of crashing again.” But he’s taking some lessons from the rough road. “We will have another go [at the NZRC] next year. “We might do something different to the car; we’ve got a few different options; we’re not sure yet 100 per cent what we will do but we do want to be out there.” “And we still want to improve on our second place we had last year.” And will he be back at clubman’s rally next year? “Yes, we will.” The Mahindra Goldrush Rally Coromandel is on August 20.
