Liberia Clean Up Day HOLLYWOOD - Fautz Associates, volunteers and residents of Hollywood’s Liberia neighborhood teamed on for Liberia Clean Up Day on Saturday, recently from 9:00am - noon.

More than 57 people participated in the massive neighborhood cleanup which was part of Fautz Associates’ ongoing Keep Liberia Clean initiative. The goal was simple, clean up trash, help the environment and enhance the quality of life for Liberia Diana Hanford, Pierson Grant Public Relations , Brian McInnis, vice president, Fautz Associates residents. Following the cleanup, volunteers were with Liberia residents and volunteers Justin Gratreated to a delicious bar- ham and Percy Walker. beque lunch.

To date, Fautz Associates has invested $3 million in improvements within the Liberia neighborhood which spans approximately one square mile, east of I-95 between Stirling Road and Sheridan Street. Fautz Associates is undertaking an ambitious redevelopment venture and the multiphase project includes revitalizing the Liberia neighborhood. Robert has been acquiring and beautifying vacant lots and abandoned or neglected properties, renovating rundown single family homes with all-green materials and then offering them for rent or purchase at affordable prices. He is making a drastic improvement, one home at a time. There is currently a waiting list of hopeful renters for the in-demand three-bedroom single family homes.

The Seder: Here are some things to know about the event • There is a specific set of tasks that must be completed and information that must be covered in a specific order On the first night of Passover (first two nights outside of Israel), Jews are commanded to have a special family meal filled with ritual to remind us of the significance of the holiday. This meal is called the Seder, which is a Hebrew root word meaning “order.” It is the same root from which we derive the word “siddur” (prayer book).

The Seder, however, is no ordinary holiday meal - there is a specific set of tasks that must be completed and information that must be covered in a specific order. To correctly follow the process, the text of the Passover seder is written in a book called the Haggadah.

The content of the seder is summed up in fourteen parts: Kaddesh (Sancitifcation), Urechatz (Washing), Karpas (Vegetable), Yachatz (Breaking), Maggid (The Story), Rachtzah (Washing), Motzi Matzah (Blessings), Maror (Bitter Herbs), Korech (Sandwich), Shulchan Orech (Dinner), Tzafun (Dessert), Barech (Grace), Hallel (Song), Nirtzah (Closing).

NOW, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? 1. Kaddesh: Sanctification The word is derived from the Hebrew root QofDalet-Shin, meaning holy.

This is a blessing over wine in honor of the holiday. The wine is drunk, and a second cup is poured.

2. Urechatz: Washing A washing of the hands without a blessing, in preparation for eating the

Karpas.

3. Karpas: Vegetable A vegetable (usually parsley) is dipped in salt water and eaten. The vegetable symbolizes the lowly origins of the Jewish people; the salt water symbolizes the tears shed as a result of our slavery. Parsley is a good vegetable to use for this purpose, because when you shake off the salt water, it looks like tears.

4. Yachatz: Breaking One of the three matzahs on the table is broken.

Part is returned to the pile, the other part is set aside for the afikomen (see below).

5. Maggid: The Story A retelling of the story of the Exodus from Egypt and the first Passover.

This begins with the youngest person asking The Four Questions, a set of questions about the proceedings designed to encourage participation in the seder.

The Four Questions are also known as Mah Nishtanah (Why is it different?), which are the first words of the Four Questions. The maggid is designed to satisfy the needs of four different types of people: the wise son, who wants to know the technical details; the wicked son, who excludes himself (and learns the penalty for doing so); the simple son, who needs to know the basics; and the son who is unable to ask, the one who doesn’t even know enough to know what he needs to know. At the

end of the maggid, a blessing is recited over the second cup of wine and it is drunk.

6. Rachtzah: Washing A second washing of the hands, this time with a blessing, in preparation for eating the matzah.

7. Motzi Matzah: Blessings over Grain Products and Matzah The ha-motzi blessing, a generic blessing for bread or grain products used as a meal, is recited over the matzah. A blessing specific to matzah is recited, and a bit of matzah is eaten.

8. Maror: Bitter Herbs A blessing is recited over a bitter vegetable (usually raw horseradish; sometimes romaine lettuce), and it is eaten. This symbolizes the bitterness of slavery. The maror is eaten with charoses, a mixture of apples, nuts, cinnamon and wine, which symbolizes the mortar used by the Jews in building during their slavery.

9. Korech: The Sandwich Rabbi Hillel was of the opinion that the maror should be eaten together with matzah and the paschal offering in a sandwich. In his honor, we eat some maror on a piece of matzah, with some charoses (we don’t do animal sacrifice anymore, so there is no paschal offering).

10. Shulchan Orech: Dinner A festive meal is eaten.

There is no particular requirement regarding what to eat at this meal (except, of course, that chametz cannot be eaten). Among Ashkenazic Jews, gefilte fish and matzah ball soup are traditionally eaten at the beginning of the meal.

11. Tzafun: The Afikomen The piece of matzah set aside earlier is eaten as “dessert,” the last food of the meal. Different families have different traditions relating to the afikomen. Some have the children hide it, while the parents have to either find it or ransom it back.

Others have the parents hide it. The idea is to keep the children awake and attentive throughout the pre-meal proceedings, waiting for this part.

12. Barech: Grace after Meals The third cup of wine is poured, and grace after meals is recited. This is similar to the grace that would be said on any Sabbath. At the end, a blessing is said over the third cup and it is drunk.

The fourth cup is poured, including a cup set aside for the prophet Elijah, who is supposed to herald the Messiah, and is supposed to come on Passover to do this. The door is opened for a while at this point (supposedly for Elijah, but historically because Jews were accused of nonsense like putting the blood of Christian babies in matzah, and we wanted to show our Christian neighbors that we weren’t doing anything unseemly).

Messiah will come within the next year). This is followed by various hymns and stories.

Relay for Life will take place on Friday; Ocean Drive property is a hot topic

By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - This Friday, April 11th, the City will be co-hosting the Annual “Relay for Life” at Bluesten Park along with Pembroke Park.

This community wide event will give everyone the chance to come together to support and celebrate survivors, remember loved one’s, support research and the unique needs of those that are fighting the battle against cancer. Teams have been signing up for an evening of fun at the park and we hope everyone stops by to support the cause.

There will be a Survivor Dinner at 6 p.m., a DJ, great raffles filled with gifts from many of our local shops and restaurants, a dance contest, a Dunk contest, Karaoke, a Pool side evening movie featuring “Frozen,” a bounce house, a beautiful luminaire, food and drinks will also be available. I do hope everyone comes out to enjoy this fun event and supports the fight against cancer.

On Saturday, another

annual community event will take place at City Hall, the “GREEN FEST.” From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be a Farmers Market, free document shredding, free fruit tree give away, water wise information and other informational booths. The event is co-hosted with the Chamber of Commerce.

Last week, the city held the regular city commission meeting.

While the meeting agenda was not full of items, one public hearing item involved 8 hours of testimony and debate. This hearing was on the request for the development application for 2000 Ocean Drive formerly known as the Regency Hotel and Spa. The application from the new owners is for 64 luxury condo units rather than a 144 hotel room project that was planned approved a few years back.

The first item to build eastward of the CCL was approved. This item was debated at length. The CCL is a demarcation that adds an extra layer of permitting for the building.

The variance policy that our city has adopted provides specific building requirements to address flood zones and building elevations. The state also has additional permitting requirements to assure buildings meet specific requirements.

The CCL is different than the erosion line.

The city has itself approved our own applications to build eastward of the CCL. The next two issues did not pass but were deferred.

Three attorneys intervened on the applica-

tion. One attorney for himself, one for another resident and the third represented the “unit owners.” All residing at the Parker Plaza. Many concerns that were debated were to be added to the development agreement as terms before a building permit would be issued. It should be noted that environmental concerns are all reviewed and must meet the state requirements before a permit is issues.

The items we were adding are over and above state requirements.

The biggest sticking point was the location of the tower and what views would be impacted. Over the past months and even up to hours before the hearing the developer and their attorneys have been working with their neighbors at the Hemispheres and Parker Plaza. The Hemi-

spheres had reached an agreement and testified at the hearing that with the changes to make the building taller and leaner and moved to the east they would not object. Understanding that something would be built on the land due to vested zoning rights to build as a PDD and up to 64 units with approval they agree the application was a reasonable resolution.

Parker Plaza could not come to a resolution. They wanted the building moved west and north. The developer worked to move the building 10 feet west and 5 feet more north without objection by the Hemispheres.

Anymore changes Hemispheres would not agree. In short, moving the building east would mean the building would sit directly center between both buildings, hence residents would look

directly at a building rather than an amenity deck. In addition, the move would also impact residents across the street adversely due to shadows.

The super majority of the commission would like to see a resolution and was supportive of the development. The deferral passed with the hopes the parties would have more time to work out an agreement. The item will be brought back next Wednesday, April 16th.

What you can deduct and for how long is one of the biggest things made.

If you are at the top of the income bracket, you are going to pay more. While the Bushera tax cuts were extended for most, the top tax brackets returned to 39.6 percent. So if you made more than $400,000 as an individual, or $450,000 as a couple, your tax bill will be higher this year. Additionally, if you are making over $200,000, you will be subject to a Medicare surcharge of 0.9 percent.

Also, deductions for medical expenses incurred in 2013 will be harder to get. Previously, you could deduct medical expenses if they exceeded 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income. That number rose to 10 percent for 2013. So, if you or a family member were in the hospital last year, you will have a harder time writing those costs off.

"The medical deductions have always been so important to our family," Sandy Reese of North Miami Beach pointed out.

"With the way the economy has been, you would think that the government would make things easier and not harder on all of us."

Education expenses once again provide an opportunity for a little relief. If you are a parent or student paying for school, the American Opportunity Credit could help you take up to $2,500 off of your tax bill if you paid tuition or fees last year, plus additional deductions for loan interest and other education-related ex-

penses.

If you're a teacher, you can write off up to $250 in out-of-pocket expenses for books and other school supplies. A recent survey showed that on average, teachers spend nearly $500 of their own money on school supplies. If you are a teacher, the extension of this deduction is welcome news.

People of China bring Shen Yun with magnificent culture art and dance to the Arsht Center • The group not only entertains but deeply educates and inspires as the animated backdrops

By Eleanor Hannan A Shen Yun show is one extremely grand production. It is a performing arts and entertainment company that performs classical, story-based, Chinese ethnic and folk dance. These performances are passed down through thousands of years, using extensive acrobatic and tumbling techniques with a philharmonic orchestral accompaniment, using several traditional Chinese instruments, in addition to solo performers, consisting of approximately 60 male and female dancers, wearing authentic costumes. The name Shen Yun translates into “The Beauty of Divine Beings Dancing” and was founded in 2006 with the mission of reviving 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Based in New York, Shen Yun is definitely reviving authentic Chinese culture, which has mostly been destroyed under present rule. Avoid tax identity theft and keep your information safer this tax day (BPT) - You know the feeling. You’ve slogged through the paperwork, collected your receipts, filled out the forms, transferred the totals from line to line and figured out the size of your refund, or how much you owe. You drop your tax forms in the mail or submit them online, and you can finally exclaim “My taxes are done!”

At least, it’s over for most people. But for a growing number of Americans, the tax nightmare is just beginning. These people will not receive a refund or pay for taxes due, because in the eyes of the IRS, they’ve already filed a return. Except, they haven’t – an identity thief has.

In 2012, 1.2 million people were the victims of tax identity theft and another 1.6 million were victims in the first half of 2013, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.

Someone who knows your Social Security number can fill out a tax return, fake your income and tax withholding, and have a refund sent to a debit card. Most refunds are issued quickly, and you won’t know about it until you try to file and get a rejection notice. According to news reports, this even

happened to Attorney General Eric Holder this year.

If there’s any good news about this situation, it’s that tax fraud has become so big that the IRS has thousands of people working to investigate and help protect against it.

If you do become a victim, there’s an IRS form to fill out – Form 14039 – and a special team you can reach at 800-908-4490, extension 245, that will help you resolve the problem.

Once you’ve become a victim, the IRS will give you a code each year that has to appear on your tax form for it to be accepted.

But for those who have not been victimized, the experts at LifeLock, the identity protection service, suggest a few things

you can do to help reduce the chance that you may be the next person to get that dreaded rejection notice.

Protect your Social Security number: Don’t carry your Social Security card with you, and don’t give out the number any more than absolutely necessary. If you’re asked to provide it on a form, ask the company why they need it and whether you really have to share it, because often it’s optional.

Shred personal documents: Use a quality “cross-cut” shredder to destroy old tax forms, monthly financial statements and other documents that include your personal information. Or switch to online delivery, so that those documents never end up in places

where they can be stolen, like your mailbox or recycling bin.

Don’t wait until April

15: File as soon as you can, so that your return gets to the IRS before any fraudulent ones.

Do your taxes in a secure location: It’s wonderfully convenient to work from coffee shops, but when you’re handling sensitive information like your taxes, make sure you’re on a secure network where it’s harder for thieves to capture the information you’re sending back and forth.

Don’t fall for scams: If someone calls or emails asking for personal information,

don’t provide it. The IRS says they only request information by mail, so if you get an email or text message that appears to be from them asking you to send back your personal details, it’s probably fraudulent.

Health care industry experiencing new demands for nurses

(BPT) - Nursing continues to be one of the fastest-growing occupations in the nation, as nurses make up the majority of the health care industry workforce. In fact, recent projections from a January 2014 report published in the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook estimate the job growth to be 19 percent faster than the average occupation through 2022.

Besides a strong job market, a degree in nursing can be even more rewarding than you may think. A nurse usually has a flexible schedule and the option to work in a variety of establishments, from hospitals to schools, home care facilities and even government agencies.

Few professions can provide the same number of options in terms of where to work, areas to specialize in, or degrees to use. The range of nursing specialties is almost as varied as the personalities of the

nurses themselves. So no matter what kind of person you are, you’ll have a place in nursing.

However, the industry has changed over the years and this has led to a higher demand of registered nurses. Patient treatments have become more complicated, and with an increased workload, nurse positions require even more critical thinking skills.

Brenda McAllister, the national director of nursing of the Brown Mackie College system of schools, knows firsthand how the industry has changed. "I have watched the industry grow over the years as nurses become more involved than just taking vital signs, giving medications and bathing patients,” she says. “There is a more team-oriented approach which has developed in hospitals, and this naturally makes it a more rewarding career option. As a result, more and more nursing programs are in demand.”

Although conventional wisdom suggest that it is the quiet ones who most often attempt suicide, and while sometimes this is true, the majority of suicide attempts are made by people who have verbalized feelings of self-harm…

There are about one million people worldwide 30,000 in the United States who die from suicides per year. For every person who successfully completes an attempt, there may be 20 people who have tried without success.

While women attempt suicide 3-4 times more than men do, men are better at it, and 3-4 times more likely to succeed in their attempts.

While attempts may occur at almost any age, adolescent attempts are significantly on the rise, particularly among gay and lesbians. Although repeated verbalizations may be simply a cry for attention & support, they should not be taken lightly.

Ask any seasoned therapist, and he or she will tell you that many patients express some suicidal ideation at some point during therapy.

The great majority will not act out, but there are four red flags (among others) that would behoove a concerned party to take notice.

They are talking about suicide, making actual preparations for death i.e, making a will, getting bank accounts in order), articulation of an actual plan, and the feeling of complete loss of hope.

Keep in mind that not every attempt is predicated on these factors, but most are…Another point that should also be mentioned is that attempts often occur not when the suffering individual is at his or her “lowest point” but actually when the person is feeling a little less depressed and has the energy to perform.

There are some sound basic responses you can offer a friend or a loved one who may actually be considering a suicide attempt. Talk open and honestly to the suffering person. Be concrete and specific and don’t be afraid to actually ask if they are considering self-harm.

Do not be overwhelming, but be a good nonjudgmental, non-critical ear. Try to rid the person’s environment of all possessions that may aid in suicide; (ie lethal pills, guns, knives, etc)… and get professional help as soon as possible. Try to convince your friend or loved one to voluntarily accept help. Forced commitments can be traumatic. There are 24 hr. suicide prevention lines one can call. to work through problems that don't have a standard cookie-cutter solution. If a life-threatening problem occurs, the nurse must take action within their scope of practice to save a patient. Nurses must have the ability to think on their feet and assure patient safety.

On the other hand, nurses continue to go the extra mile to help their patients. Many people, especially the elderly, are reluctant to take medicine prescribed by a doctor other than their regular doctor. "Nurses will sometimes even call a patient's regular doctor to explain their current health care needs," McAllister says. "Usually a word from that trusted source will help the patient comply. It’s an additional step, but all the more rewarding when you help a patient out.”

In addition, there are a lot of things a nurse can do other than work at a hospital. In fact, not all aspects of nursing require physical, hands-on care. One employment option, which appeals to those who don't necessarily want to touch every patient physically, is to become a care manager or care coordinator. This position involves managing outpatient care to make sure needs are met and health is maintained when a patient leaves a medical facility.

The home health care coordinator's job is broadly based on patient education. Good health assessment skills and good nursing skills are necessary elements of care. These skills, plus teaching skills, continue to help keep the patient as independent as possible.

Another example would be a care coordinator's position at an in-

surance company, which is similar to one employed by a hospital.

They work with an eye toward keeping treatment aspects in line with guidelines. A knowledge base is essential to perform the job. One must be able to be a manager, have a broad understanding of the body and

a scientific background.

Even with attractive career options and expanding nursing programs, there is still a growing nursing shortage. Higher complexity of care, a growing geriatric population, expanding health and disease prevention services, and many other conditions

regarding individual health demand more qualified nurses to fill an increasing variety of positions. So if this is a path you choose to follow, research your options and determine which fields and programs meet your needs to have a rewarding career in nursing.

Cholesterol control: Know all your treatment options (BPT) - If you’ve been diagnosed with high LDL or “bad” cholesterol, know that you are not alone. For others, medication also is needed.”

From Page 2C ––––––––––––––––––––– Since high “bad” cholesterol doesn’t cause many symptoms, a great deal of people may not realize their levels are too high, underscoring the importance of getting cholesterol levels checked.

Doctors recommend adults have their cholesterol levels screened every five years (sooner if you already have been diagnosed with high cholesterol). A blood test can determine your cholesterol levels.

Controlling your weight, staying physically active and making healthful food choices can help lower “bad” cholesterol. For many people, however, heredity plays a role and even with lifestyle changes, their “bad” cholesterol may continue to be too high. In those cases, a doctor may prescribe medication to help reduce the “bad” cholesterol.

TREATING “BAD” CHOLESTEROL When more than diet and exercise is needed to treat high cholesterol, most people are treated with a class of medications called “statins.” If the use of a statin by itself is not getting cholesterol under control, another type of medicine called Welchol® (colesevelam hydrochloride) may be added to further lower “bad” cholesterol levels.

Welchol is a bile acid sequestrant that lowers "bad" cholesterol differently from statins. While statins work in the liver, Welchol works in the intestines. Bile acids are needed to help digest fat from foods that are eaten. Welchol attaches to these bile acids and bile and removes some of them from the body.

When levels of bile acids are reduced, the liver

needs to make more and takes cholesterol from the bloodstream to do so, thereby lowering "bad" cholesterol. Tell your healthcare provider if you have stomach or intestinal problems, including gastroparesis (when the stomach takes too long to empty its contents), abnormal contractions of the digestive system, a history of major gastrointestinal tract surgery, if you have trouble swallowing, or if you have vitamin A, D, E, or K deficiencies.

The most common side effects seen in patients taking Welchol include constipation, indigestion and nausea.

Headaches and Dental Health One in eight Americans suffer from recurring headaches that are so severe they cannot carry out normal living! An estimated 80% of all headaches occur from muscle tension.

Did you know that many tension headaches are related to your bite?

This article explains how headaches can result from dental stress and how your dentist might treat them.

Headaches are our number one pain problem in the United States. Approximately 40% of all "healthy" individuals suffer from chronic headaches. Head pain is not new. Early civilizations relied on magical potions and spells to cure headaches. In severe cases, holes were drilled in the skulls of headache sufferers so that the evil spirits which were believed to be the cause of the pain could escape. Over the years we have learned much about what causes headaches and how to treat them. Today, there is a growing realization that a common cause of tension headaches is a bad bite.

HEADACHES FROM DENTAL STRESS How can your bite cause a headache?

Tension headaches result from muscle strain, or contraction.

When muscles are held tight for long periods of time they begin to ache.

Headaches from dental stress are a type of muscle tension headache. A tension headache may be on one or both sides of your head. Or, it may surround your head as if a steel band were wrapped around it. The pain feels like a dull, nonthrobbing ache. Tension headaches are usually relieved by aspirin. Specific signs which indicate that the headache may have a dental origin include: • Pain behind the eyes • Sore jaw muscles or "tired" muscles upon awakening • Teeth grinding • Clicking or popping jaw joints • Head and/or scalp painful to the touch • Could that nagging headache and painful jaw be tied to your oral health?

Many headache sufferers might want to consult their dentist as well as their doctor since headaches and dental pain have a lot in common.

Pain centered in the nerves and muscles running throughout the face and neck, as

well as poor habits the discomfort may cause, can trap sufferers in a painful feedback loop, with head pain triggering jaw and neck pain and vice versa.

"Headaches and toothaches all transmit through the trigeminal nerve, the largest sensory nerve in the head that supplies the external face, scalp, jaw, teeth and much of the intra-oral structures," Clark says.

"Pain in one branch of the nerve has the potential to activate other branches of the nerve, and when that pain is chronic and sustained, it is more likely to trigger a sequence of events that might lead to a headache. In people who have headaches, a continuous, sustained toothache can easily trigger one of the episodic headaches such as migraines."

Besides the close anatomical links between head, face and jaw pain, reflexive behaviors caused by pain and tension such as jaw clenching and muscle tightening can exacerbate and transfer pain.

"There is a good deal of interconnectivity between the orofacial and craniocervical systems; for example, when you clench your teeth you contract your neck muscles inadvertently," Clark says.

"When patients have an acute neck injury they often start holding tension in their teeth, and jaw muscle pain will occur.

When you have a chronic toothache or bad temporomandibular joint, this may also cause bracing and guarding in the muscles on the same side of the jaw and in the neck."

When head and face pain spring from tooth or jaw joint injury, such as when a patient unknowingly clenches or grinds their teeth for long periods of time and damages tissue inside and below the teeth, it can be difficult for a physician to decipher the cause

"In general, headaches don't have physical signs, and diagnosis is all related to the history and pattern of the pain," Clark says. "If the patient is being treated for the migraines, tension headaches or sinus pains and the medications or other methods of treatment given by the physician are not effective, they are often referred to a dentist for evaluation.

TIRED BITE The muscles which control your jaw and hold your head upright are very complex. Many people do not realize that every time they swallow, their upper and lower teeth must come together in a firm way to brace the jaw against the skull.

We swallow over 2000 times each day and night! If your bite is unstable, as from poorly aligned teeth or even a missing tooth, the muscles must work harder to bring the teeth together. Most people take a vacation from

Your head weighs approximately 15 pounds the weight of an average bowling ball! Imagine your head as a baseball balanced on top of a pencil by a number of rubber bands. When muscles are tense, they shorten. Now imagine shortening just one of those rubber bands. Some

REFERRED PAIN The pain may be felt in the cheeks or the jaw joints. Many times, however, the pain is "referred" to other areas of the head. Referred pain is when a pain originates in a part of the body that differs from the area where it is felt. Even a single tooth can refer pain to the head.

Similarly, when even a single jaw, neck, or shoulder muscle becomes shortened, all of the other muscles are forced to overwork to keep the head balanced on top of the spinal column. We see then that dental headaches originate from an unstable bite which cause the muscles of the jaw, head, and neck to overwork and become painful. Once the muscles become painful, a vicious cycle begins. The pain makes you feel tense and uptight.

This worsens the muscle spasm, which in turn increases the pain.

DENTAL TREATMENT If you suspect that your headaches might be caused by your bite, contact your dentist. Your dentist will examine your teeth, your muscles, and your jaw joints to determine if dental stress is the source of your

headaches. If so, treatment will involve correcting your bite so that the muscles can function without extra strain and tension. In some cases it is helpful to receive other types of treatment, such as physical therapy, along with dental treatment to correct the postural relationship of your head, neck, and shoulders. Counseling or relaxation training might also be helpful to teach you ways to relax the muscles and to identify sources of emotional stress.

However, if the true source of the headache is an unstable bite, this must ultimately be corrected to relieve the headaches.

The important aim of correcting your bite is to insure optimal long-term health.

Joseph Scavo Park opens with record crowd for ribbon cutting celebration

With six snips of the scissors, City Commissioners and officials opened Joseph Scavo Park on Saturday, April 5, as almost 1,000 residents packed the park at 900 Three Islands Boulevard. Almost 1,000 residents and visitors jammed Joseph Scavo Park on Saturday, April 5, for the grand opening of the redesigned sevenacre facility. Well before the ribbon cutting to officially reopen the park, children packed the age-appropriate playground, residents worked out on the exercise equipment on

the fitness trail and children were playing basketball.

Located at 900 Three Islands Boulevard, Joseph Scavo Park showcased the City’s commitment to improving the parks.

The new facility was built after extensive community input into the needs of the residents; restroom facilities, two dog parks, a fitness trail, basketball court and two picnic shelters highlight the City’s commitment to meet community needs.

“Not bad for a guy from Brooklyn,” said Emily Scavo about how her late husband, former Mayor Joseph Scavo, would view the park. “I’m over-

whelmed by this.”

Joseph Scavo Park is an example of the evolution of the City’s recreational facilities.

B.F. James Park is expected to open in late June, and South Beach City Park and North Beach City Park are expected to open in the first quarter of 2015. The City will ask residents to vote on a general obligation bond in November to fund the remaining six parks in the Citywide Parks Master Plan.

Fifth Annual GreenFest Saturday, April 12 The Hallandale Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and City of Hallandale Beach will host the fifth annual GreenFest Saturday, April 12, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at City Hall, 400 S. Federal Highway. GreenFest celebrates Earth and Arbor Days.

The annual event includes tips on conserving water, efficient irrigation systems, fire and safety emergency preparedness tips, an opportunity to earn up to a $100 rebate for replacing old inefficient toilets, a “Garbage to Art” competition, games, green products and food. Also, the City annually gives away free fruit trees for City residents, with proof of residency, free garden hose nozzles, waterefficient showerheads and other recycling goodies.

“We will have a shredding machine here, so bring your documents,” said Mayor Joy Cooper. “The shredding is free.”

Mayor Cooper worked with Broward County to get the shredding truck to offer residents an additional way to recycle and save energy.

The annual event is free.

A team of Parks and Recreation Advisory Board members selected two pups from a multitude of small dogs as the cutest at the grand opening of Joseph Scavo Park. The two dog parks, one for small dogs and one for larger dogs, offer off-leash areas for play and are open from sunrise to sunset.

Burkhardt Construction of West Palm Beach completed the project on time and under budget. At the ribbon cutting, Vincent Burkhardt, company president, presented the City Commission with a symbolic check for $100,000 representing the cost savings from the projected $2.7 million budget. Keeping much of the cost locally, City residents and sub-contractors

comprised much of the workforce.

The park is named for the former mayor who moved to Hallandale Beach and became active in his community and politics. He championed community safety and the need to standardize police equipment to ensure the safety of Hallandale Beach police officers. A former City Commissioner, Mayor Scavo died while in office in 2001.

Traditional recipes for your Passover Seder Matzoh Balls Ingredients: 2 eggs, slightly beaten 2 tablespoons oil or chicken fat 2 tablespoons soup stock or water 1/2 cup matzah meal 1 teaspoon salt Beat eggs slightly with a fork, and add all other ingredients except the matzah meal, and mix together. Add matzah meal gradually until the mixture becomes thick, and then refrigerate for 20 minutes in a covered bowl.

With wet hands, form the dough into balls (about 8 balls for 1/2 cup of matzah meal). Drop the balls into boiling chicken soup, or into a large pot with 1 quart of water and 1 tablespoon of salt, after the water has come to a boil. Cook for 30 minutes, and serve.

BRAISED BRISKET 1 well-trimmed beef brisket (3 1/2 pounds) Coarse salt and ground pepper 2 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger 3/4 teaspoon ground allspice 3/4 cup cider vinegar

1/2 cup tomato paste 1/3 cup light-brown sugar 1 small onion, finely chopped 6 garlic cloves, minced Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Rub the piece of beef with salt, pepper, ginger, and allspice. In a medium bowl, combine vinegar, tomato paste, brown sugar, onion, garlic, and 1/2 cup water.

Spoon half of the sauce into a 9-by-13 inch glass baking dish.

Put the brisket in the dish, and pour the remaining sauce on top of the brisket so that it is fully coated. Cover the dish tightly with heavy duty aluminum foil, or two layers of regular foil. Bake until the brisket is so tender that the meat begins peeling apart, which should be about three hours. Remove the brisket from the dish, and skim any fat from the surface of the sauce. Pour sauce in a medium saucepan, and boil it for about five minutes to reduce the sauce slightly. Slice the brisket against the grain, and serve with the sauce.

LEMON AND ROSEMARY CHICKEN 1 chicken (about 3 1/2 pounds), cut into 8 pieces 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/2 cup fresh rosemary leaves 10 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1 lemon, peel removed, pith and pulp chopped Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste In a bowl, toss chicken with oil, rosemary, garlic, lemon juice, lemon pith and pulp, and salt and pepper. Marinate for 1 hour.

Heat oven to 475 F. Arrange chicken pieces in a 9-by-13inch baking dish; add remaining marinade.

Roast, turning once, until cooked through, about 30-40 minutes.

HAROSET 6 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped 1 cup finely chopped walnuts 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon white sugar

3 1/2 teaspoons honey 1/3 cup sweet red wine Put apples and walnuts in a large bowl. In a small bowl, mix together the cinnamon and sugar, and sprinkle it over the apples and walnuts. Stir in the honey and sweet wine. Serve immediately, or refrigerate until serving.

FLOUR-FREE WALNUT DATE CAKE Cooking spray 3 cups walnut halves 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 cup sugar 4 large eggs, separated 2 teaspoons finely grated orange zest 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Pinch of kosher salt 3/4 cup chopped pitted dates Preheat oven to 350 degrees, and coat the bottom and sides of a 9 inch round cake pan with cooking spray and line with parchment paper. Put walnuts, cinnamon, and 1/4 cup sugar in a food processor and mix together on the “pulse” setting until finely

ground, but not powdery. Whisk the egg yolks, orange zest, and vanilla in a small bowl. Next, beat the egg whites and salt in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until foamy. Mix in the remaining 1/4 cup sugar, one tablespoon at a time, until soft peaks form. Fold in the yolk mixture and dates, then fold in the ground walnut mixture.

Scrape batter into the prepared pan.

Bake for 23-25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the cake comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan on the rack, then run a knife along the sides and invert onto a platter.

To add a glaze, take 2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, 4 tablespoons unsalted margarine or butter, and one teaspoon of honey, and put all in a cup and microwave until the margarine melts. Whisk until smooth, cool slightly, then pour over cake.

Sprinkle extra chopped toasted walnuts on top and serve.

NO-FLOUR, NO-DAIRY

CHOCOLATE COOKIES 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 3 egg whites 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or coffee 2 1/2 cups semisweet Passover chocolate chips Preheat oven to 350 F. Line baking sheet(s) with parchment paper.

In bowl of standing mixer or in a large bowl with hand-held mixer, mix powdered sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon and salt at low speed. Add egg whites; beat at low speed until batter is well mixed. Stir in vanilla and chocolate chips by hand.

Using a spoon or small cookie scoop, spoon batter onto baking sheets, leaving 1/2 inch between cookies, as the batter will spread. Bake until the cookies are cracking on the surface, about 15 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer to cooling rack.
