Hallandale Beach resident 'Amazing Mazie Ford' turns 108

Recently, Hallandale Beach resident Mazie Ford turned 108 years young and she was joined by so many friends at The Hemispheres Condo. PREMIER Design + Build Group, LLC Celebrates the Groundbreaking Ceremony at Bridge Point Marina Mile in Dania Beach PREMIER Design + Build Group, LLC held a groundbreaking ceremony on July 16, 2014, on behalf of Bridge Development Partners, LLC for Bridge Point Marina Mile, a speculative industrial warehouse underway at 3400 SW 30 Avenue in Dania Beach. The institutional grade facility is Bridge’s second development in the city’s industrial district. Prospective tenants will benefit from the location’s close proximity to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades.

The 32’ clear height, Class A warehouse will cover 189,620 square feet upon completion and will be constructed with concrete tilt-wall, structural steel, and 45 mil TPO roofing. The reality that many wanted to close Hallandale High School was at the point where one vote would have been the end of a facility that never gained momentum from the community or the students who failed to achieve passing grades.

At the center of the change was Sharon Ludwig, who took over the first line of the educational process in the district. What Ludwig did as principal at Hallandale Elementary School was to make changes - and while she said all along that things would come very slowly - her goal was to ensure that her students would move on to the next level more prepared than ever before.

What Ludwig did was institute year round school. While the idea at first was met with criticism by many parents and students, she was quick to point out that if changes weren't made, the entire school feeder program would never make it.

Ludwig's "tough love" approach was also accepted by the administration and teachers and most importantly embraced by the City of Hallandale Beach, which promised to get involved. Long hours and caring to make a difference was mandatory.

Through the years, Ludwig raised the bar and challenged her students and teachers to make this a school system to be proud of - and by the time she stepped down last year - after pouring her heart into her job and making sacrifices - Ludwig had in-

deed changed the face of education in a community that was looked down on just a decade ago.

"I figured that if we were going to make changes, they had to come by the community and the city," she said.

"We needed support in changing direction. We wanted to make it fun once again to come to school and learn."

Ludwig's blueprint for a successful educational feeder program was one that worked.

She saw the interest in her many programs start to grow. The students worked harder than ever before to raise the bar - and the parents started to buy into what she was doing.

Eleanor Garcia sent three children through the Hallandale Elementary School program.

She was one of the parents who initially balked when told that the school would go year round, but as she looks back 12 years later with all of her kids graduated and in college, it was a decision that truly changed the community.

"I had been one of those young parents who really didn't understand the vision that Mrs. Ludwig had," Garcia recalled. "But as time went on, I saw the difference in the way my children approached school. They were actually anxious to get to school every Monday, and the talk of going to college was something we never heard before."

Garcia also understood that the process did have a method. One that many didn't comprehend until grades

Brian Kingsley started to go up and the passion for learning started to take hold.

Nobody embraced that passion more than Brian Kinglsey. Brought aboard over three years ago to take over Gulfstream Middle School, this young an innovative educator bought into Ludwig's philosophy, finally receiving many of her students at his school.

To fully understand the way this education chain has worked in Hallandale Beach through the years is to see the students leave the elementary school and head off to other middle schools in different cities - never completing what every district strives for - a complete city education.

"When I first arrived at Gulfstream, there was something I never experienced before," Kinglsey reflected. "The city and the organizations within the community were immersed in the school. That is something that very few school districts have."

What Kingsley did was embrace what the City of Hallandale Beach was giving to his school. He watched how Gulfstream and Hallandale Beach worked together on events that really in-

441 From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– perty and wiped it out of their mind, believing the more that they focused on this "Millennium Mall" facility that remained boarded up - the more angry they would get.

While the City of Hollywood could do very little with the property that didn't belong to them, they made every attempt to help get someone to sell and purchase in hopes that things would change.

After nearly 20 years of struggling to make something positive happen to this 441 corridor, the light at the end of the tunnel began to shine brightly. There was indeed something to be positive for the city and those businesses who had remained optimistic in the face of a reality that nothing was being done.

This 40-acre property, which had once been home to Burdines, JCPenney, Jordan Marsh and so many other popular stores, had finally been leveled and cleared to make room for a 180,000 square-foot Wal-Mart SuperCenter that would include a full-service shop with groceries and a pharmacy that would also be home to restaurants and businesses that would finally attract a flow of people into the community.

"This is a huge thing for businesses like mine that has been here for 10 years with the promise that this would happen," Mike Roth explained.

"Things during the summer are always slow, but for us, attracting anyone to come here has been almost impossible, any time of the year."

Roth had resorted to mail order for his business that sits along Hollywood Blvd. Closing had been an option, but landlords had been creative with many tenants, trying to keep them and lowered the rents.

"It got to the point where you really wanted to blame someone," Roth said. "But there was really nobody to blame, so you either complained or left. We opted to stay, believing that sooner or later, things would change."

The City of Hollywood has always planned for the future of the 441 corridor, cleaning many areas up in hopes that this large property would be transformed into something. The Wal-Mart was the ideal proposal by many as far back as 4 years ago. The idea of having a national chain that would attract people to the location would indeed showcase the other businesses and the community which had done so much in sprucing up heavily-traveled 441.

The reason that the Fashion Center closed was the population was growing toward the west - and the Pembroke Lakes Mall, along with the Aventura Mall, had large anchor stores leaving and bringing in less people.

Bruce Godwin has been a resident of Hollywood for 22 years. He recalls the days of the Fashion Center when he lived in North Miami-Dade County. It was a destination that kept Hollywood in the spotlight. He also knows what has happened to the area in the wake of the facility closing and numerous plans for the location falling by the wayside.

"Look at how many businesses closed up because of the lack of visitors coming into the area," he said. "It's really not fair to those people who poured their money and sweat into staying afloat. But now, things look like they are a lot more optimistic."

Dania Beach-based Dacar Management received approval from the Hollywood Planning & Zoning Board in November of last year to build the Walmart.

Dacar acquired the land in 2009 and looks forward to opening the store sometime in 2015, which will not only help area businesses begin to thrive but add as many as 300 jobs at a time when unemployment is still very high.

From FCAT testing to food drives, there was a celebration and a reward that went along with the success that was achieved. The Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League got involved. So did Mayor Joy Cooper and Commissioner Bill Julian, who spearheaded so many events that not became a family partnership.

In addition, businesses such as Memorial Healthcare and the Hepburn Center have been vital in the transformation along the way.

"You could see on the faces of the students at our school that they were actually looking forward to coming to school and learning," Kinglsey explained. "I have to admit that I never saw anything like it before, and it was something that was setting standards in education throughout the county."

For the first time ever, students from other cities were trying to come to school in Hallandale, and the spillover began to affect the high school, which was once on the verge of closing with Ds and Fs. Because of his positive efforts at Gulfstream Middle School, Kinglsey was named Middle School Principal of the Year by the Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA) and the Florida Association of Secondary School Principals (FASSP) in 2013.

He was also recently moved to the main Broward County Public Schools office and appointed Chief Academic Officer. It's a position that he admits he owes

"I told everyone involved at the school that together they recognized that low expectations can be shattered when you believe in something bigger than yourself and give all of your heart to the life of a child," he explained.

This sale of the old city hall property is an important part of the new fire station project

By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - Broward County School Board members recently approved an agreement that allows the city to move forward with the closing of the old city hall property.

This sale is an important part of our fire station project. I have not written about the Main Fire Station since we were working through the legal transfer of a reverter clause that existed on the portion of the land where the Fire Station currently sits.

The clause was found through the title search and was only on that portion.

The clause provided that if the property was sold or not kept for a city purpose it would revert back to the School Board. Rather than keeping the property vacant or used for another city purpose, the board agreed to transfer the reverter to part of the Chaves Lake property.

This is a win-win agreement since the portion transferred will preserve the reverter and it now adds additional taxable value to our tax rolls.

That additional review will help offset the costs of the Main Fire Station.

As our readers know, the city commission has been working to replace the old main station for the past three years. We budgeted over the years to fund the station replacement in our capital

improvement plan and financial plan. Initially, we started out with the goal of doing a land swap with the current owner of the property.

For well over a year plus of negotiations, we could not come to terms and then went to court over code issues on the site. City Manager Miller proposed to move the new station to Foster Road where we already owned parcels and could purchase others to create the land needed. The purchase would be offset from the sale of the other.

With the closing moving forward, combined with the recent award of the design RFP the station will soon become a reality. The station will not only be state-of-theart for emergency, medical and fire services, it will house an EOC. The new building and location, will provide the same and in some cases better response times for some of our higher demand areas.

In other school news, the EAB held a meeting with the school board staff and our District Board Member to discuss the needs of Gulfstream Middle School that is now an A school.

The board and the city have urged the board to revisit the potential of creating a K-8 campus and relocate the Adult Center Programs to the Middle School site. This would allow for HACC

to still provide their alternative programs while providing fields and other PE opportunities that can be shared between the elementary school and middle school.

The concept makes sense, but as the committee learned even though it seems like a simple facility changes, there are multiple policies and laws in place that must be addressed.

Mainly, the law that provides for you cannot change the location of where children go to school even though you are changing capacity.

The good news is there is an open public process that residents and most importantly parents can participate in. Changes in policy now provides a process where changes can be made without being triggered by a capacity issue from overcrowding.

We are always looking forward to working with all our schools in Hallandale Beach. Our partnerships continue to benefit all students. The proof is in the recent grading of all state schools. Hallandale Elementary is a now a B School, Gulfstream Middle an A and High School an A. Over the past years, the Hallandale Beach STEM programs that started in Gulfstream are now in High School and Elementary have created a

major focus on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics, strengthening education.

Gulfstream Middle School has finally made an A under the leadership of Brian Kingsley.

Regretfully, Mr. Kingsley is now working in administration so selecting a principal to keep Gulfstream on track was critical. I had an opportunity to be part of the local committee that interviewed the three finalists recommended by the school board staff. The process provides parents, teachers and stakeholders to listen to responses from the candidates. We could not ask any questions but had to agree

to which questions were to be asked. We also were asked to take notes and they were all submitted.

All were excellent, but in my opinion Mr. Pappos was the best suited on multiple levels to fit with our school. He ended up being the school board’s recommendation. He has both middle and lower school experience. He seems to have a creative and collaborative approach to leadership. I am looking forward to welcoming him to the Hallandale Beach community.

(BPT) - Americans living in areas prone to severe storms, floods, earthquakes or other natural disasters may be well aware of the philosophy, "Hope for the best, but plan for the worst." Families with a disaster plan in place will be better equipped to stay safe and recover from an emergency. Too often, however, even the best planners forget to include provisions for the four-legged members of the family.

"When disaster strikes, families may not have much time to act," says Dr. Ellen I. Lowery, associate director of U.S. professional and veterinary affairs at Hill's Pet Nutrition. "While organizations like Hill's, through our Disaster Relief Network, strive to help families and pets in the wake of natural disasters, it's important to have a disaster plan ready, including a well-stocked Pet Emergency Go-Kit with food, water and other essentials for your pet."

Dr. Lowery offers some guidance for putting your "Pet Emergency Go-Kit" together: * Include first aid supplies and a first aid guide book for pets. * Keep three-day supplies of both your pet's favorite food - in a waterproof container - and bottled water. * Store an extra safety harness and leash because even the best-behaved pet may be frightened in an emergency, causing him to run and hide. * Include waste cleanup supplies. It's important to properly dispose of pet waste to avoid adding health concerns to an already difficult situation. * If your pet is on any medications, keep a few days' worth in your kit. Also include an up-to-date copy of medical records, as well as contact information for your veterinarian and additional veterinary and pet care organizations in your area. * You should have a brief, written explanation of your pet's feeding routine, personality and any behavioral issues. In a disaster, your pet may receive care from someone who doesn't know him as well as you do.

Keep your Pet Go-Kit somewhere readily accessible in an emergency. Be sure your pet always wears his/her identification - a microchip or collar ID tag with up-to-date information may help reunite you with your pet if you become separated in the confusion of a disaster scene.

If an impending disaster requires you to evacuate, take your pet with you. Be aware of your pet's favorite hiding places so you'll know where to look when you're in a hurry to leave.

Before disaster strikes, identify locations where you could take your pet during an evacuation; not all disaster shelters for people will be open to pets.

Look for pet-friendly hotels or motels, or ask relatives and friends if they could accommodate you and your pets.

Despite your best efforts, it may not be possible to take your pet with you. To alert first responders to the possible presence of a pet in the house, place a pet rescue decal on your front door or window. It should include your veterinarian's contact information and any special notes about your pet's personality or medical needs. Carry a picture of your pet in case you become separated.

Bariatric surgery has been shown to improve many different obesityrelated diseases and conditions such as type 2 diabetes and high-blood pressure.

One example of this evidence includes the STAMPEDE (Surgical Therapy And Medications Potentially Eradicate Diabetes Efficiently) trial, sponsored by Ethicon and conducted by the Cleveland Clinic. The study showed that people with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes who had surgery lost weight and also decreased their dependency on diabetes medications almost immediately following bariatric surgery. The study also showed patients had a decreased need for or no longer required cardiovascular medications to control high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

The Bariatric Surgery Comparison Tool offers a more personalized perspective on the effects of surgery on comorbidities and medications. This tool shows patients the percentage of people like them who demonstrated a reduced need for or no longer required medication to control obesity-related diseases following their bariatric surgery.* 3. Will the surgery help keep weight off long term?

People trying to maintain weight loss often experience disappointing results. Despite best efforts, diet and exercise programs may work at first but fail in the long run.5 In March 2014, the Cleveland Clinic published long term results of the STAMPEDE trial, which showed that, for three years, people who underwent bariatric surgery alongside drug therapy were able to keep weight off and had better control of their diabetes compared to people who relied on a medically monitored diet and exercise regimen with drug therapy.

Bariatric surgery is an approved procedure

for treating obesity, and now is available as a minimally invasive procedure, meaning it carries a similar amount of risk as some of the most common surgeries, such as gall bladder surgery.

There is increasing evidence that bariatric surgery is not only an effective option for addressing obesity, but that it may also help control type 2 diabetes and other obesity-related diseases.

City Commission Approves New Healthy Vending Contract • City vending machines will offer a wide variety of low calorie, low sodium and trans-fat free choices HOLLYWOOD – When you think of vending machines, you don’t necessarily picture an array of healthy snacks. Soon vending machines in all City of Hollywood facilities will provide employees and customers a wide variety of heart healthy options. Today the City Commission unanimously approved a new contract with Gilly Vending, Inc. based in Miami for healthy beverage and snack vending machines.

“Hollywood is a City committed to supporting healthy lifestyles for both our employees

and our residents, and we want to reflect that in all our services and programs,” says Mayor Peter Bober. “Now, when you’re visiting City Hall or one of our community centers or parks, you’ll be able to get snacks and drinks that are actually good for you.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control more than a third of U.S. adults (34.9%) are obese and childhood obesity has doubled in children and tripled in adolescents over the past thirty years. Hollywood offers more than 200 low

Gulfstream To Raise Purses And Offer Incentive Gulfstream Park announced it will increase purses an average of 10 percent starting with the July 24 condition book and also offer a $250 starter incentive to help horsemen offset the cost of workers' compensation.

Gulfstream's purse increase is the result of an agreement signed July 1 between Gulfstream and Calder that ended a dates conflict and head-to-head racing. Since the agreement was signed, Gulfstream's total handle and field size has increased significantly. Gulfstream has also made significant strides in reinvigorating the Florida 2-year-old program and the $1.4 million Florida Sire Stakes, which begins August 9.

"The solid increases we've seen in field size and handle confirms our long-held belief that a dates agreement would benefit racing and horsemen," Gulfstream President Tim Ritvo said. "Our strategy is to continue building Florida racing for our bettors, horsemen and breeders and create a healthy year-round racing program.

"Because of our increase in handle we will offer a $250 starter bonus to our horsemen through October 4 to help offset the cost of workers' compensation. While this will help in the short-term, our goal continues to work with horsemen on a long-term solution to workers' compensation."

Phil Combest, president of the Florida Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (FHBPA), said: "Florida horsemen are excited about summer racing again for the first time in years. A purse increase, starter incentive, the best field sizes in the country, and a track that is marketing and publicizing the sport. Why wouldn't we be optimistic."

Your family probably has some favorite picnic menu items they frequently request, but if you're looking to inject some new life into those traditional foods, try the following: * Add sparkle to your salad - Gelatin salads are quick and easy to prepare a day or two in advance of your picnic.

If you're interested in giving your gelatin salad a bit of pizzazz, consider using ginger ale or soda water instead of plain water.

Hungry Jack Original Hashbrowns 3-4 strips diced bacon 1/3 cup chopped onion 1/3 cup mayonnaise 3 tablespoons cider vinegar 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/2 cup diced red bell pepper 1/2 cup thinly sliced celery 2 tablespoons chopped parsley Baby spinach or greens for serving

Hashbrowns are a great way to give your salad new texture and taste without straying too far from the traditional Germanstyle potato salad recipe. Directions: Add hot water to hashbrown potatoes per package instructions. Let stand for 12 minutes. Drain well.

Heat a 9 or 10-inch nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. Add bacon and onion; cook while stirring frequently until bacon is done and fat is rendered, which should take 10-15 minutes.

Stir in potatoes. Cover pan and cook potatoes on low heat for 5 minutes, stirring once. Potatoes do not need to brown. Remove pan from heat. In a separate small bowl, stir together mayonnaise, vinegar and sugar. Add mayonnaise mixture to potatoes, along with bell pepper, celery and parsley, and mix well.

Serve warm or room temperature on a bed of greens.

Variation: For a

lighter version, use light mayonnaise or substitute 2 tablespoons olive oil for mayonnaise. * Dessert with a surprise - Frozen fruit pops are a popular picnic dessert option and nothing is better than the homemade version.

Once at your picnic location, remove the dry ice from the container to allow the fruit pops to temper; be sure to follow all guidelines for handling dry ice.
