• Cardiovascular disease. Research shows that serveral types of cardiovascular disease may be linked to oral health. These include heart disease, clogged arteries, stroke and bacterial endocarditis. Some researchers believe that bacteria from gum disease can enter your bloodstream and travel through your arteries to your heart, affecting your cardiovascular system.

Although periodontal disease seems to be associated with heart disease, more studies are needed before the link can be confirmed with certainty.

• Pregnancy and birth. Gum disease has been linked to premature birth. Some research has shown that disease-causing organisms in a pregant woman’s mouth can wind up in the placenta or amniotic fluid, possibly causing premature birth.

Unfortunately, treating periodontal disease during pregnancy may be too late, because the infection may have already spread in the woman’s body. This is why it’s vital to maintain excellent oral health before you get pregnant.

• Diabetes. Diabetes increases your risk of gum disease, cavities, tooth loss, dry mouth, and a variety of oral infections.

Conversly, poor oral health can make your diabetes more difficult to control.

Infections may cause your blood sugar to rise and require more insulin to keep it under control.

• HIV/AIDS. In some cases, one of the first signs of AIDS may appear in your mouth, with several gum infections. You may also develop persistent white spots or unusual lesions on your tongue or in your mouth.

• Osteoporosis. The first stages of bone loss worsens from year to year, your dentist may be able to spot this on routine dental X-rays. If bone loss worsens from year to year, your dentist can suggest that you discuss the issue with your other health care providers.

• Other conditions. Many other conditions may make their presence known in your mouth before you know anything’s wrong. These may include Sjogren’s syndrome, certain cancers, eating disorders, syphillis, gonorrhea and substance abuse.

So you can see how very important regular dental visits are and how avoiding the dentist can have severely adverse

effects on your overall health. The truth is that the bacteria in the mouth replicate and double every 30 days reaching destructive levels in just 90 days-so people with gum disease can have bone loss in as little as 3 months! Research keeps finding new links between oral health and the health of your body every day. The latest study was done on pancreatic cancer.

Here’s what they found: The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute found that periodontal disease was associated with an increased risk of cancer of the pancreas. The study appeared in the January 17, 2007 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Data for the new study came from the Health Professional’s Follow-Up Study, which began in 1986 and includes 51,529 U.S. men working in the health professions. Participants respond to questionnares about their health every two years.

After analyzing the data, the researchers confirmed 216 cases of pancreatic cancer between 1986 and 2002; of those 67 reported periodontal disease.

The results showed that, after adjusting for a smoking, diabetes, body mass index and a number of other factors, men with periodontal disease had a 63% high risk or developing pancreatic cancer compared to those reporting no periodontal disease. “Most convincing was our finding that never-smokers had a two-fold increase in risk of pancreatic cancer,” said Michaud.

(BPT) - Some rules are meant to be broken - like the one about not wearing white after Labor Day. Others should remain sacrosanct, such as the rules of good credit. Those are the kind of rules that can make life easier and happier when you follow them and help ensure your finances stay in good order, too.

Unlike fashion rules, the rules of good credit are really not subject to interpretation or personal opinion. They derive from the formulae that credit bureaus and lenders use to calculate your credit score.

So what are the 10 unbreakable rules of good credit? Here they are in descending order, a la David Letterman: 10. Create a budget and stick to it.

Your budget should cover everyday expenses and allow for the smart use of credit.

9. Use credit cards wisely. Smart use of revolving credit - not carrying a balance, paying the full balance immediately - is an important component of a healthy credit score. Unwise use, such as running up debt, can lower your score. And in that vein ...

8. Always pay more than the minimum balance on your credit cards.

Ideally, you would pay off the entire balance right away, but if that’s not possible, pay more than the minimum - as much as you can afford. Paying only the minimum balance means it will take years - and thousands in interest charges - to pay off your debt.

7. When applying for a loan - which includes applying for new credit cards do so wisely. Comparison shop and make your applications (if you’ll be making more than one) in a short amount of time, so that those credit inquiries will only count against your credit score once.

Stretching applications over time, or making too many in a short amount of time, can negatively impact your credit score.

6. Your credit utilization ratio - the amount you owe compared to the amount of credit you have available - is a key factor in determining your credit score.

Avoid maxing out your credit - including credit cards or home equity lines of credit.

At any given time, try to keep three quarters to two thirds of your total available

credit free for use.

5. Don’t immediately close a credit card account just because it’s paid off.

Doing so can skew your credit utilization ratio. Before you close an account, be sure you understand what impact - if any - the action will have on your credit score.

4. Practice identity theft protection measures. From shredding sensitive paper documents before trashing them, to keeping your PC’s virus protection software up to date, it’s important to take steps to protect your credit from identity theft and fraud.

3. If you’re in financial trouble, don’t practice avoidance. If you can’t pay your bills, contact your creditors to work out a payment plan, but know that not making minimum payments may negatively impact your credit score. Being proactive may not solve your financial woes but it can help minimize the negative impact on your credit.

2. Keep an eye on your credit score.

Maybe you’re in the habit of reviewing your credit report once a year, or only check it when you’re planning to apply for a loan, but it’s important to stay on top of your credit score all the time. Fortunately, the Internet has made it easy to monitor your credit report and score. Enrolling in membership of a product like freecreditscore.com can help you understand your credit. With enrollment, you get credit score alerts, identity protection alerts and fraud resolution support if you find an error on your credit report.

And, the No. 1 rule of good credit: 1. Pay your bills on time. A consistent, long-term history of timely bill paying goes a long way toward a healthy credit score. In fact, a solid payment history can pull up your score even if there are other negatives on your credit report, such as a high ratio of credit used to credit available. Not paying your bills on time - or at all - is a surefire recipe for bad credit.

(BPT) - When it comes to making plans for retirement years, today’s younger workers are struggling to make heads or tails of all the resources and products available to them through work and personal investments.

Younger professionals who fit into the Gen X and Gen Y categories also are not taking advantage of financial professionals, who can provide information and education on planning for a secure retirement, according to 2013 research

by LIMRA, a research, consulting and professional development organization.

Such lack of financial acumen is a challenge for young adults who face a challenging job market as many continue to struggle paying back student loans and establishing both short and long term savings while balancing the needs of their growing families.

Working with a trusted financial professional should be a priority for Gen X and Gen Y members, says Jeff Duncan, a financial professional with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) who concentrates his practice in planning for retirement.

“As the younger generations approach retirement age, a lot of the

needs. Determine what opportunities exist to cover any gaps. Also be sure to take advantage of any “free” money offered by your employer. For example, a company may offer a 3 percent match payment to your 401(k) account if you contribute 6 percent.

3. Give yourself a good financial head start now by paying down debts and developing a long-term plan that includes emergency savings, retirement products to create additional income for when you won’t be bringing in a paycheck any longer as well as protection products like disability income insurance and life insurance.

4. Review and evaluate how well your strategy fits your current and planned future lifestyles once a year.

5. Pass on your education and lead by example. Demonstrate to your children how you take responsibility preparing for retirement. You can demonstrate this in several ways. For younger children, educate them on the importance of paying bills on time - try playing a game of pretend bank. For older children, discuss savings accounts and properly using these accounts.

And for young adult children, ask them what actions they’re taking now to plan for their financial future.

“Because people in Gen X and Gen Y will likely fund their retirements via savings, it’s extremely important for them to understand what actions they can take to put themselves in a better financial position, while also taking advantage of any savings tools through employment benefits and retirement savings,” says Henske.

Tips for baby boomers seeking divorce The 25-year itch may be the new 7-year itch (BPT) - Baby boomer couples that have been married 25 years or more are divorcing at record rates, according to a recent study by the National Center for Family and Marriage Research at Bowling Green University in Ohio. While overall divorce rates peaked in the 1980s at around 50 percent, divorce among baby boomer couples 50 years or older has doubled over the last 20 years. In 1990, the study noted, 1 in 10 people who divorced were 50 years or older. Today, that figure is 1 in 4. And, if you’ve been married previously, the likelihood that your second or third marriage will end in divorce is 2.5 times greater than firsttime marriages.

“Because of several high-profile splits of baby boomer couples in the news recently, most people would assume that infidelity is the leading cause of divorce among older Americans,” says Don Cosley, a divorce attorney with the Cosley Law Office in Chicago. “The reality is that lack of communication is often the deal breaker. Empty nesters wake up one day and realize they have nothing in common with their spouse. That’s because they haven’t kept up the communication in their marriages.”

Unlike a younger couple that divorces, when a couple that has been married for a long time breaks up, the impact can be dramatic for the couple and those around them, notes Cosley. The division of assets, health care issues, handling longtime friendships with other couples, and sharing the holidays with adult children are just some of the issues that come up in the dissolution of a long-time marriage.

If you’re over 50 and considering filing for divorce, or if you’re in the middle of a divorce, here are some tips from FindLaw.com, the nation’s leading website for free legal information: • Prepare financially: Legal fees alone can range from several hundred dollars to tens of thousands, depending upon how long you’ve been married, child

custody and the size of the estate that needs to be divided. The cost alone of establishing a new household can double expenses overnight. If you foresee divorce in your future, it’s important to save to prepare for a new transition. Women should especially be concerned.

According to the National Center of Health Statistics, it’s not uncommon for women to experience a 45 percent post-divorce drop in their standard of living.

• Seek professional help: Couples divorcing may just want to rip off the bandage and sever all ties as quickly as possible. However, immediately cashing out stock and bond investments, IRA accounts and selling your home or vacation property can cost both parties thousands in capital gains taxes.

Consider consulting a certified divorce financial analyst to assist you in making wise decisions in separating assets, in conjunction with your divorce attorney.

• Retirement and Social Security: Couples that are retired and living off retirement assets face other complexities. A Qualified Domestic Relations Order, which is a separate court order determining the division of retirement assets, may be required. Older couples also need to face questions about survivor benefits if the other spouse dies.

They should review special rules regarding Social Security benefits, such as entitlement to survivor benefits for couples that have been married for more than 10 years and are older than 62.

• Be cautious with social media: According to the American

Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, 81 percent of U.S. divorce attorneys say they’ve seen a dramatic rise in the number of divorce cases involving social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Family law attorneys warn baby boomers that some of these websites can be potential problem spots. Posts on social media sites are frequently being entered into evidence in divorce cases to document infidelities or spousal neglect.• Consider your pets: You may think of your pets as if they were your own children, but the courts look at a pet as property. Because pet custody cases have increased dramatically over the past several years, divorce attorneys say if you want to avoid a judge making a decision about who gets the pet, it’s best if the couple decides between themselves. Consider ownership, visitation rights and how veterinary bills will get divided. Otherwise, judges are most likely to award pets to the spouse who gets primary custody of the children.

• Health care insurance: One of the most complex aspects of divorce among older couples is health care insurance. (BPT) - Apparently “in sickness and in health” can mean different things to men and women. As the population ages and the need for extended health care increases, a recent nationwide omnibus survey of 1,005 American adults shows that men and women approach the issue of long-term care planning and insurance from different perspectives.

Those differences, according to the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans survey, could have a significant impact on their retirement years - and their family relationships.

Men vs. women With women living longer than men, there should be some concern about who will actually foot the bill of the costs should a woman require longterm care. With married couples, the woman is more likely to need long-term care - she will likely care for her husband during his final days, and then may rely on long-term care herself since she is likely to outlive him.

Despite that, according to Thrivent Financial’s survey, males seem more versed in the topic of long-term care insurance than females. The survey indicated that men are more likely than women to own or plan to buy long-term care insurance. For example: • 12 percent of females surveyed currently own long-term care insurance.

• 19 percent of males surveyed currently own long-term care insurance.

• 60 percent of females don’t intend to buy long-term care insurance in the future.

• 53 percent of men don’t intend to buy long-term care insurance in the future.

• 27 percent of both men and women surveyed plan to purchase long-term care insurance in the future.

In short, men seem to be coming around to the necessity of preparing for long-term care, while women appear to be slower to acknowledge the need.

The sandwich generation issue: stuck in the middle but continuing to work?

When it comes to providing care, the

differences between the sexes continue.

When asked how they would care for both their children and one or both of their parents or another loved one at the same time, male and female respondents had differing opinions.

• Twenty-six percent of women reported they would quit their job to be the primary caregiver for a loved one should the need arise.

• Only 14 percent of men said they would consider that option.

• Thirty-three percent of men said they would rely on the savings and assets of those needing care and continue working.

• Only 21 percent of women would rely on the savings and assets of those needing care and continue working.

And what will you do in retirement?

Long-term care in retirement is an important issue facing both men and women but it is often overlooked during the retirement planning process.

According to Thrivent Financial’s survey: • Only 10 percent of women considered the possibility of caring for someone else while retired.

• Only 6 percent of men considered the possibility of caring for someone else while retired.

In contrast, 43 percent of women

and 41 percent of men plan to retire fully and devote their time to travel, philanthropy and/or hobbies.

Unfortunately, many don’t stop to consider the impact to those plans should the need for extended care arise. What will be given up to pay the expenses?

Are family members trained to provide the type of needed health care? Who is willing to alter plans when push comes to shove?

“The disconnect between our expectations for a long, healthy and independent life and the reality of the chances of needing long-term care is staggering,” says Dean Anderson, product leader at Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. “Planning ahead is critical for both men and women, given the potential the consequences to the emotional, physical and financial wellbeing of your family.”

HEALTH A ‘not-so-rare’ story in the journey of a rare disease diagnosis (BPT) - In the year 2000, Lisa Wollman, a young, vibrant woman in the prime of her life, was pregnant with her second child, and like many expectant mothers, was experiencing changes in her mood and body. However, she knew something was not quite right. Lisa started experiencing anxiety and insomnia, which had not occurred during her first pregnancy. After visiting multiple doctors, Lisa was told her symptoms would subside post-pregnancy, however several weeks after giving birth, she began experiencing other unusual symptoms, including excessive facial hair growth, acne and depression. These signs and symptoms prompted further doctor visits ultimately leading to the diagnosis of Cushing’s disease, which affects approximately one to two people per million annually.

Cushing’s disease is a rare but serious, debilitating endocrine disorder caused by the presence of a noncancerous pituitary tumor in the brain which ultimately leads to excess cortisol in the body. Cortisol is a vital hormone that regulates metabolism, maintains cardiovascular function and helps the body respond to stress. The excess cortisol circulating in the body can lead to many unwanted physical and emotional effects, including those Lisa experienced, as well as symptoms such as high blood pressure, irritability, high cholesterol, rapid uncontrollable weight gain, central obesity, a round, red full face and striae (purple stretch marks), among others.

Symptoms can vary from person to person.

During the journey to diagnosis for many Cushing’s

disease patients, doctors may look at, and treat, individual symptoms, resulting in a missed or delayed diagnosis of Cushing’s disease. In fact, the average time to diagnosis is six years from the time the patient first notices symptoms. In Lisa’s case, it took about eight months of proactively advocating for testing and visiting doctors before learning that she had Cushing’s disease.

“Each specialist just looked into select symptoms based on their area of expertise and no one was willing to look at the full picture in order to consider a complete diagnosis,” said Lisa. “It wasn’t until I gained enough weight, lost enough sleep, and started to look like a football player that I was pushed by my father and my psychiatrist to get my own cortisol tested.”

Following her diagnosis, Lisa faced the emotional effects and social stresses of having a rare disease, and felt as though she was viewed differently in both her personal and professional life. Fortunately, Lisa connected with a Cushing’s disease support group, and found comfort in sharing her personal story and learning from others with similar Cushing’s disease journeys.

“When I was sick, I found that talking to other people who had been through what I went through was very, very helpful, and at times life-saving,” Lisa said. “I encourage people with Cushing’s disease to talk to each

other about their experiences, because otherwise there’s a feeling of isolation and the sense that you’re suffering alone.”

In recognition of patients living with Cushing’s disease, people across the globe celebrate Cushing’s Disease Awareness Day on April 8 - the birthday of Dr. Harvey Cushing, who was the first person to describe the disease. Knowing your health heritage: the familial link of diseases (BPT) - Family members can have many things in common, including physical characteristics and personality traits. While some traits are obvious, like having red hair or blue eyes, some shared traits are not as obvious, such as the risk for developing a common medical condition, like high cholesterol, or a rare disease.

A rare disease is one that affects fewer than 200,000 people, and about 30 million Americans have one of 7,000 known rare diseases. Because about 80 percent of rare diseases are genetic in origin, knowing one’s family history is an essential part of the recognition and diagnosis of these conditions.

Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for family members of someone diagnosed with a rare disease to go untested, which could delay getting an accurate diagnosis and potentially appropriate medical attention. Families should keep an open line of communication about diseases that may be genetic and if appropriate, encourage their relatives to seek evaluation by a knowledgeable medical professional. Nikia, 32, who is living with a rare swelling disease called hereditary angioedema (HAE), knows firsthand the importance of familial testing.

HAE is a genetic disease that affects about 6,000 people in the United States.

The disease causes repeated swelling attacks that can occur anywhere in the body, including arms, legs, hands, feet, stomach, genitals, face and throat. HAE attacks can be unpredictable, painful, debilitating and disfiguring. The average HAE patient endures about 10 years of repeated misdiagnoses before the disease is accurately identified. Along with a blood testing, a comprehensive family history can help accurately diagnosis HAE. Often, people who are diagnosed with HAE report having relatives who suffered their whole lives

from severe stomach aches or unexplained episodes of swelling, or even relatives who died unexpectedly due to throat swelling, who likely had HAE but were never accurately diagnosed.

Nikia was first diagnosed with HAE when she was just 5 years old, after experiencing severe swelling all over her body. Nikia’s mother had also suffered from bouts of unexplained swelling throughout her life, but because her attacks were less severe and only occurred in her feet, she never sought medical attention. It was Nikia’s cousin who eventually encouraged her mother to get tested for HAE, and three years after Nikia was diagnosed, her mother’s testing indicated that she also had HAE. Because of her cousin’s persistence, Nikia’s mother was finally able to understand the cause of her own unexplained swelling episodes and received medical attention that helped her manage her attacks.

Understanding the likelihood that she could pass HAE on to her children, Nikia had both of her children evaluated for the disease. Although her daughter was not diagnosed with the condition, her son eventually was. When Nikia’s son was about 3 years old, he was frequently being sent home from school for nausea and vomiting.

Nikia, who had experienced similar symptoms as a child, recognized the likelihood that it could be due to HAE. Testing confirmed that her

information she learns with her extended family and encourages members of her family to get evaluated for the condition.

To date, she has prompted two cousins to undergo testing for HAE. It is her hope that her loved ones will also spread knowledge about the disease so that others may be properly diagnosed without having to endure years of untold suffering.

“Even though some of my family members have been tested for HAE and the results came back negative, they are now educated about this disease and can help raise awareness among others,” says Nikia.
