It was back in 1983 - when Lord & Taylor, Macy’s and J.C. Penney anchored what was to be one of the most successful shopping malls in the state of Florida.

In an area that suffered through growing pains for much of the 1970s and 80s, there was a need to put a destination in an area known as Aventura, which was just another community in a sprawling Miami-Dade County.

As Publix opened on a lonely stretch of Aventura Blvd. in the 1970s, it was the only shopping structure that housed the many hi-rise condos. There was a major need to have stores, restaurants and retail shopping to accommodate the thousands who began to flock to this waterside destination.

From condos to townhomes, Aventura had got caught up in the population boom, attracting buyers from all over the world to come and enjoy the sun, surf and location.

Led by partners Donny Soffer, Edward J. Lewis, Mark E. Mason, Eugene Lebowitz and Ray Parello, the official dedication of

the Aventura Mall took place in 1983 - and the unique two-story shopping mall had started to make news.

As the Hollywood Mall and Fashion Center - along with the legendary 163rd Street Shopping facility in North Miami Beach had started to lose popularity, the Aventura Mall remained strong, attracting the largest chain stores in the country.

“It was the only place on the east side to shop and have lunch or dinner,” current North Miami Beach resident Alison Werner recalled. “I grew up in the Aventura area and remember all the construction that was going on. You could see the facility starting to rise from Biscayne Blvd. It was really exciting.”

As North Miami Beach was promised a future city that was to be called Interama, it was actually Aventura that grabbed the lead - with many developments taking shape around a community that would one day become a vibrant and attractive city to visit.

In 1996, ground was broken for a major expansion of the

Aventura Mall. The addition, built onto the southeast end of the existing complex, consisted of a three-story atrium with an AMC Theatres multiplex cinema and restaurants at a new entrance. Part of the new development were two three-story parking garages surrounding the new anchor stores’ southeast facades.

IT BECAME A DESTINATION Over the years, this is a mall that grew and established itself as a destination that the community would use to attract shoppers from all over south Florida.

Andy Kaplan worked in the Mall’s food court for two years, he remembers how many people would take the bus from all over - just to experience what this facility had to offer.

“I was like 19 and working in the Mall was great,” Kaplan remembered. “I remember going to the food court the day it opened and filling out several applications for a job. Everyone wanted to work at this facility.”

Kaplan was one of many locals who also worked at first

Publix - which is currently across the street from the Aventura Mall and the Library. He remembers taking the bus and having to go through the mall construction just to get to his job.

EXPANDING TOWARDS THE FUTURE Today, the Aventura Mall is the 16th largest in the nation and as more growth is planned, there is a never-ending quest to give shoppers the best retail and entertainment environment possible. It remains the jewel of south Florida - as visitors from all over make this part of their sightseeing plans.

With over 2.7 million square feet of shopping space, this is now a facility that is home to 300 shops and restaurants - along with anchor stores that continue to drive traffic.

Recently, Turnberry Associates, which owns and manages the mall, got the goahead from the Aventura City Commission for more expansion. The company hopes to begin by the end of the year.

The drawings show a 241,000square-foot expansion which

will jut out from the area where Sephora is located on the first floor, and the current food court site, near the JCPenney store.

The new area will house about 30 stores, and will have a food court, though it will have fewer tenants than the 18 in the current food court. The parking garage could include as many as 1,400 spaces. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2016.

NAMES YOU CAN COUNT ON The roster of tenants at the mall is overwhelming - with nationally-recognized shops and restaurants that shoppers are flocking to in record numbers.

From ABERCROMBIE & FITCH to Ann Taylor, Apple, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, Baby Gap, Bath & Body Works, BOSS, Burberry and Cheesecake Factory, the stores are familiar and busy.

Businesses such as Chico’s, Diesel, The Disney Store, Florsheim Shoes, Foot Locker, Gap, GNC Live Well, Juicy Couture and Mayors Jewelers are also names that shoppers can trust. “Aside from the Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Sears, Nordstrom and J.C. Penney, which attracts people here, there are so many other tremendous stores to shop in,” said Miami Lakes resident Gina Caruso.

“Microsoft, Montblanc, Nine West, Perfumania, Sandro, Sunglass Hut, Swim’n Sport and Tommy Hilfiger are very popular, too.”

While the Food Court has been able to attract a number of quality eateries, the Mall has also attracted famous restaurants such as Bellla Luna, Grand Lux Cafe, Johnny Rockets, Sushi Siam, Cajun & Grill, Che Pasta, FIVE GUYS BURGERS and FRIES, Mama B’s Pizza Co., Salsa Grill, Tango Grill and Tony Roma’s Express to name a few.

“We have been coming here for many years because of the choices you have,” Caruso explained. “To me, this Mall is still as nice as the first time I came here back in 1990. I try to make it here a few times a year.

UNDERSTANDING HOME HEALTH

Thank you for your great response to this column.

These are a few of some recent questions: I’m not able to manage my apartment or drive my car anymore. Will my long term care insurance cover someone to help me?

Your long term care insurance covers personal care needed at home only. That means that your policy states that it will cover a home health aide who can help the insured person shower, dress, prepare light meals, do laundry, and straighten up bathroom and kitchen after using them for the care of the patient. The aide can also shop for the insured. Aides are professionals who have been trained with a required amount of state-approved hours in a legitimate training school to provide safe and efficient care with a degree of ethics. They are aware of the services they are allowed to provide under insurance coverage. Services requested other than the aforementioned needs to be agreed upon via a private arrangement between you and your aide. As an agency, we cannot and do not get involved in these arrangements when insurance is involved.

But I don’t need anyone to help me with my shower or getting dressed. I also can put light meals together or pop frozen dinners or restaurant leftovers in the microwave. What I

need is someone to drive me shopping, for errands and to doctor appointments. I also need someone to clean my apartment, because I can’t really do it anymore. So, what can I do?

Those are considered private services. At Always Classic Care, we can provide them for you at a reasonable out-of-pocket cost, much as you arranged before you qualified for coverage from your long term care insurance. If you explain your needs to me, I can make wonderful recommendations for you. We can provide housecleaners and drivers who provide those services for a living, but are screened as well as our aides prior to our recommending them.

Why should I go through an agency if I have to hire someone? I can use someone my neighbor uses.

You definitely can hire whomever you like. However, you should consider the following items: • How well do you know this person? Can you trust him or her? Are you sure the aide does not have a police record? All of our recommendations have had to be subjected to an FBI investigative screening.

• Is the aide insured to cover any liability if you should become injured while in their care? Are you sure?

• Will you be paying your share of their Federal taxes?

We do. Many people are unaware of their responsibility

to IRS when hiring a household employee, or the aide’s legitimate status to work in this country. If you hire privately you are responsible for taxes, checking legal status and overtime pay. They are now your employee and you are legally an employer.

REMEMBER… it’s always better to book services through a professional agency. You get top people and avoid a lot of trouble.

How to reclaim control of your credit and identity (BPT) - By the end of the first quarter 2014, more than 200 data breaches compromised millions of consumer records, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center, which keeps track of reported data breaches. Stunned?

Data breach stats are even more staggering if you’re among the millions of Americans caught up in one every year.

In addition to the potential monetary loss and identity theft risks, data breaches can also rob you of your sense of security and confidence. When you learn you’ve been involved in a data breach, it’s important to take steps to help protect your identity and financial accounts, and to rebuild your sense of security.

Often, breached organizations will offer affected customers some form of credit monitoring for a set period of time (usually one year) after the breach. While such services may go a long way toward making you feel more secure, be sure you understand exactly what the offered product can - and can’t - do to help you recover from the potential impact of a data breach.

Data breaches, credit monitoring and identity theft risks Consumers whose personal or financial information is compromised in a data breach may be at greater risk of experiencing identity theft. In 2013, more than 13 million Americans experienced identity fraud, according to a study by Javelin Strategy.

Credit monitoring products aim to help minimize identity theft risks by keeping an eye on your credit

accounts, where evidence of potential fraud and identity theft may first appear. Identifying such signs early may help mitigate some of the damages associated with identity theft.

While it’s true that consumers can do on their own virtually everything a credit monitoring product does, going it alone can sometimes be time-consuming and burdensome. Convenience is a significant benefit of a credit monitoring product. Not all credit monitoring products are alike, however, and if a company offers you this product in the wake of a data breach, don’t hesitate to carefully review the product and ask questions, including: • Does the product provide daily monitoring of credit files?

• Will you receive timely alerts of key changes in your credit files?

• Does the product monitor your credit file at all three of the major credit reporting agencies, or only one? For example, Equifax Complete monitors information from all three bureaus.

• Are financial alerts included, and is it possible to link your bank and credit card accounts to the monitoring product? This allows you to be alerted when withdrawals from your bank account and/or charges to your credit card are processed, based on threshold amounts that you define.

• Is Internet scanning for your Social Security Number and credit card numbers included? This may help detect

unauthorized posting of your Social Security number and credit card numbers on certain suspicious trading sites.

If a breached company cannot answer these questions, or you’re not satisfied that the credit monitoring product being offered is comprehensive enough for your needs, you may need to take additional steps. First, you should ask the breached company for a different product. Such companies are increasingly aware of the impact data breaches can have on their reputation, and may be more willing to engage with those customers who feel they’re not receiving an appropriate response in the wake of a data breach. If a company refuses to respond to your request, consider also subscribing to a more suitable product of your choice on your own - it can be a key step toward regaining some confidence and peace of mind when you’re a data breach victim.

CITY NEWS Picking the right camp for your kids (BPT) - As the classic Gershwin song lyrics go, “summertime and the livin’ is easy” isn’t always the case if you’re a parent trying to determine what to do with your kids when the final school bell rings.

More than 10 million kids from coast to coast attend some type of summer camp intended to occupy their days and provide memorable experiences full of fun, learning and development.

While selecting the right camp can be a daunting task for parents, Life Time - The Healthy Way of Life Company, which welcomes more than 65,000 kids to its camps across the country, has some key suggestions to ensure a positive summer for everyone.

Here are some tips to keep in mind as you look at camps: • Safety. Ask questions in advance to ensure the camp has standard operating procedures in place to keep your kids safe. Are parents required to show their membership card or driver’s license to both check in and take their children home? Every employee should also have a state-approved background check and those working with kids should be CPR- and first aidcertified.

“Parents should also know the counselor to child ratio,” says Veres.

“While many states and day camp programs allow for a 1:20 ratio, Life Time ensures a 1:10 ratio on-site and 1:7 ratio off-site. These higher standards help to ensure the safety and engagement of kids under our care.”

• Activities. Find a camp that excites kids, provides a routine and has a variety of healthy activities for kids to engage in. This is critical for parents who don’t want their kids wasting away summer days playing video games for hours on end. Good information to learn includes what the balance is between a set daily routine and the type, level and variety of activities the camp has designed to keep kids interested.

• Counselors. It’s important to have counselors who will keep kids engaged in healthy, active fun, and are committed to building relationships with kids throughout the summer and not just looking for a summer job. They should have previous experience with kids and/ or experience in childhood education or other kidfocused programs.

• What will they eat?

With the rise in childhood obesity and food allergies

along with the overall importance of real food in daily diets, consider the food and snacks provided at camp. Find out if the daily menu includes healthy options free of artificial colors, preservatives and sweeteners, as well as being free of trans fats and bleached flour.

For those children with food allergies, parents will want to ensure the camp has guidelines for their child.

• Does the schedule work? While kids may have all the time in the world during the summer, most parents still have set schedules. Ensure that the camp times from start to finish work for everyone.

Many camps have forced times for drop-off and pick-up, creating extra challenges. Life Time has extended hours to accommodate parents’ busy schedules, and kids have the ability to participate in their swimming lessons during their camp day, creating one less thing to do and/or place to go. Dr. Charlton Adler Heel Pain From Plantar Faciitis Affects 10% Of US Population

NORTH MIAMI BEACH - The most common cause of heel pain here in the United States is a condition called plantar fasciitis. Athletes are affected, as well as soldiers, sales people on their feet over long periods of time and those who are overweight. It can affect one foot or both.

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fascia is the flat band of ligament that connects our heel bones to our toes. The plantar fasciia supports the arches of our feet. If it becomes strained by walking, running or standing for long periods of time, especially on hard surfaces, it can become weak, swollen and irritated, resulting in severe heel pain.

People with flat feet or high arches are prone to this condition. Pronation (rolling of the feet inward when walking) is also a predictor of plantar fasciitis. Those with tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles are at risk for this, as well as people who are

overweight, or wear shoes that don’t fit well or are worn out.

Pain is usually felt in the heel and foot with the first step out of bed in the morning or after sitting for a long period of time. It is also likely to be felt after standing for a long period of time or when climbing stairs.

How is plantar fasciitis diagnosed?

After an indepth assessment of your medical history that would include past injuries and illnesses as well as current conditions under treatment, your podiatrist will assess how you stand and walk, where the pain is, what time of day you experience the most pain, and your level of physical activity. He or she may even xray your foot to rule out a stress fracture.
