1936 The Sunny Isles Pier is built to help attract visitors to Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. The Miami Beach Fishing Pier Company was contracted to build the 800-foot-long pier, which immediately became a welcome attraction for locals, visitors, and fishermen.
1980 The Newport Fishing Pier is considered unsafe and faces threats of being demolished.

1985 The historic Sunny Isles Pier is

1986The pier re-opens after more than $1 Million in repairs.
2005 Hurricane Wilma damages the pier forcing it to close once again. The city of Sunny Isles Beach has the safety of the pier checked by several engineering firms and it was concluded that the damages to the pier had compromised its safety.
2007 Plans to restore the Newport Pier are announced by the City Commission.
2010 Mayor Norman Edelcup and the City Commission host a beachfront ground breaking ceremony for the Sunny Isles Beach Newport Fishing Pier. The city enters into a public-private partnership with the owner of the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort to restore the Newport Fishing Pier - the last remaining public pier in Miami-Dade County.

No Great Shakes (At Last)
Brain Implant Helps Essential Tremor And Parkinson’s Disease Patients Regain Control
Most of what Bob Carlton saw of Vietnam during his two wartime tours of duty was seen from the cockpit of an A-1 Skydiver, which means he played a significant role in saving the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of soldiers and civilians. Bob ran 162 missions across the five years he served as a naval aviator. He also ran a couple of missions that didn’t go quite as planned. Both resulted in crashes that Bob says he’s fortunate to have lived through.
“One of the crashes occurred when the catapult on the aircraft carrier failed,” Bob remembers. “That plane went straight into the water. Never even got airborne. The second was the result of an engine fire, so I’m quite lucky to be here.”
Luck indeed, but a couple of years ago, Bob began to feel like his luck was running out. A battle with essential tremor, a nervous system disorder that mostly causes involuntary twitching in the hands, was the reason. “For me, the problem started about 30 years ago,” says Bob, now over 70. It started with occasional little shakes in my left hand. Over time it got worse, a lot worse. It moved into both hands and got so bad it was hard to do almost anything.
Just about anything you do with your hands, I couldn’t do. I couldn’t hold a fork or spoon or control a toothbrush, so eating and brushing my teeth were very dif-
ficult. The problem also made it very difficult to do one of my favorite hobbies, woodworking. Eventually, Bob grew tired of adapting. The shaking in his hands became so bad that after years of trying to control the problem through medication, he finally accepted his neurologist’s advice to try an advanced treatment option for the disorder.
Life-Changing Procedure
That treatment is called deep brain stimulation, or DBS. It is an FDA approved procedure in which the patient is implanted with a small pacemaker sized device that delivers electrical impulses to the specified areas of the brain. Studies show that within a year of being implanted with a DBS Device, Parkinson’s Disease and essential tremor patients experience a 90 percent improvement in motor function and a 30 percent decrease in medications.
Bob underwent the approximately 2hour DBS Procedure in September 2021. When he was released the next day, he felt “like a new man.” “It’s unbelievable. In three hours, a problem I’ve had for 30 years was fixed.” The impact of DBS has made on Bob’s life is so great that he gladly shares his experience with DBS Surgery to those considering the procedure.
“People want to know, what’s the sur-
gery like and does it really work?” Bob relates. “Well, I’ve been through it, so I’m there to tell them what it’s like and that it doesn’t just work, it changes your life. It is truly a life changing surgery.”

Some workouts target your legs, back, arms, core and other areas of your body, but others provide a full-body workout that can help engage multiple muscles in your body. Zumba® is one of the exercise programs that can provide a full-body workout and a dance class.
2. Improve Your Coordination
Dancing requires some level of coordination to follow choreography and piece together the moves. Zumba® will help those looking to improve their coordination and give them a safe space to practice their dancing abilities. Similar to how you can train your Lungs to work harder and your muscles to become stronger, you can train your body to become more coordinated through repetition. Zumba® is one of the best classes to work on improving your coordination. Including regular exercise into your rou-
Zumba® is an upbeat and lively dance fitness class that will make you sweat with a smile on your face — you’ll be having so much fun that you’ll almost forget you’re accomplishing an intense cardio-style workout. Implementing aerobic exercise in your workout schedule is an essential part of improving your overall health. This type of exercise describes any high or lowintensity cardio workout. It’ll increase your heart rate and the amount of oxygen your body is using during your workout, helping you exercise your heart and lungs, which positively impacts your cardiovascular system. Specifically, aerobic exercise can improve your heart health by lowering your Blood Pressure, lowering your resting heart rate and reducing your chances of Heart Disease. Completing an aerobic workout is also beneficial for your Lungs. It trains your lungs to work more efficiently as you breathe hard and absorb more oxygen. Even parts of the body like the skin can benefit from Zumba® and other forms of aerobic exercise. When you raise your Heart Rate and enhance Blood Circulation, your body can deliver Oxygen and other nutrients to your skin, which helps make it healthier.
4. Assist Your Metabolism
Zumba® Classes, and any other type of cardio workout, may help give your metabolism a boost. If you’re someone looking to lose weight or improve your overall health, you may be curious about finding ways to improve your body’s metabolic rate. A person’s metabolism will vary depending on various factors and may change as they age. Keep in mind that you can’t really “increase” your metabolism — and trying to do so won’t
help you lose weight. However, you can assist your metabolism by burning more calories than you take in, and Zumba® is a wonderful way to do just that. All levels of Zumba® can impact your metabolism.
5. Torch Calories
A top benefit that encourages many people to work out is the number of calories they burn. Zumba® Classes are a great workout if you have a weight loss goal and want to burn a lot of calories. Zumba® , like other aerobic workouts, requires plenty of energy to keep up with all the choreography and upbeat rhythms. Zumba® is all about movement. During a class, you’ll shake your hips, move your feet, sway your arms and complete other types of dance moves that will keep your body moving. The tempo changes and intensity variation throughout the class make Zumba® one of the best workout choices to maximize fat burning and torch calories.
6. Boost Your Mood
Whether it’s been a rough day, you’re stressed or you just need a morning pickme-up, Zumba® is the perfect mood booster. Zumba® can benefit many aspects of Mental Health. The combination of exercise and dance causes your brain to release Endorphins like Serotonin, making you happier. In general, exercise can also help alleviate any built-up Stress, anger or Anxiety that needs an outlet to escape.
7. Meet Other Zumba® Lovers
Zumba® offers plenty of social benefits that can enhance your overall health. Having friends who like the same things you do is a big part of friendship. A fun aspect of participating in local Zumba® Classes is socializing with other people and creating new friendships. Zumba® is a social group fitness class, especially if you take classes regularly at your local fitness
center, dance studio or other location. Zumba® Classes are a great way to make new friends if you spend a lot of time at work, are busy with kids or have other obligations in your life that hinder your time to socialize with others.
8. Exercise at Home
While some people love to work out at the gym, others like to exercise from the comfort of their homes. A major perk of Zumba® Classes is you can participate almost anywhere — virtual Zumba® Classes are a wonderful option for people who want to stay home and work out or don’t have time to make it to the gym. Zumba® Workouts are possible at home or at any location as long as you have enough space to move around and an internet connection.
10. Feel Like You’re Part of a Community
One of the best parts about Zumba® is its inclusivity to all levels of fitness. Zumba® Classes are open and available to those of nearly all abilities. No matter your age or skill level, you can find a class that works perfectly for your health goals. Zumba® Classes are a safe space for all fitness levels, and the instructors are ready to welcome you into their motivating and supportive community.
Classes are held on Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Veterans Park: 18375 Northeast 31st Avenue, Aventura, Florida 33180. Please plan to be in class for approximately one hour. Students must bring their own refillable water bottle to stay hydrated.

Iron Deficiency
A Growing Concern Among Women
Women have hematology concerns throughout life, including clotting, bleeding, and abnormal blood counts. Many experience weakness, headaches, dizziness and many more symptoms that affect their quality of life.
In a recent article published by The New York Times on October 17, Alisha Gupta shed light on a concerning statistic: 35% of young women in the United States are grappling with low iron levels. Despite its prevalence, the issue often goes undetected due to a lack of awareness among women and their healthcare providers.
According to the latest guidelines from the FIGO Ob/Gyn society, it is recommended that all women undergo iron testing “throughout their life,” especially during pregnancies, to combat this pervasive problem.
Since 2020, efforts have been underway to raise awareness about the seriousness of Iron Deficiency. The ramifications are substantial; women suffering from Iron Deficiency experience fatigue and
cognitive impairment, while pregnant women face an increased risk of compli cations during childbirth. Moreover, babies born to mothers with Iron Defi ciency are at risk of developmental issues, and the mothers themselves may expe rience Postpartum Depression
This issue also exacerbates gender and racial inequalities.Women are expected to have lower blood hemoglobin levels than men, affecting their ability to concentrate at work and potentially leading to more missed days. Furthermore, teenage girls with low iron may struggle academically, perpetuating educational disparities. Iron Deficiency disproportionately affects Hispanic and African American women and their infants, highlighting broader racial inequalities in healthcare.

Walk Your Way To Better Health
A walk is a perfect excuse to take a break from a long day at your desk.
A walk is not just good for your body, it’s also good for your soul. Physical activ ity, like walking, is one of the best ways to reduce stress and boost your mood. However, reports show walking rates are declining steadily in the United States.
On average, 1 out of every 4 U.S. adults sits for longer than eight hours each day, per research from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, which can have negative consequences on Physical and Mental Health. Regular exercise improves mood, boosts energy and can even help you sleep better. Staying active is one of the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy.
Consider this advice from the American Heart Association, which has worked for decades to promote policies and strategies that make it easier for com munities to get and stay active. One example is National Walking Day, estab lished by the organization to encourage people to move more throughout the day so they can feel, think, sleep and live bet ter.
Indeed, adding more movement can benefit your body and mind in numerous ways, such as:
Lowering disease risk
Getting the recommended amount of physical activity (at least 150 minutes of moderate, 75 minutes of vigorous or a combination of those activities per week) is linked to lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression, according to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services.
Increasing sunlight exposure
Outdoor exercise is an easy way to get moving and take in the sunlight, which can improve mood, boost immunity and help you get some Vitamin D. Spending time outdoors is a no-cost option and has
been shown to reduce Stress, promote a sense of belonging and improve mood.
Improving Cognitive and Mental Function
Physical activity keeps your mind sharp now and later. Studies show higher fitness levels are linked to better attention, learning, working memory and problem solving. What’s more, a study published in the “British Journal of Sports Medicine” shows people who get the recommended amount of physical activity are less likely to develop Depression.
Living longer
Healthy life expectancy can be positively impacted by increasing activity. According to research published in the “American Journal of Epidemiology,” swapping just 30 minutes of sitting with
low-intensity physical activity reduced risk of death by 17%.
Get Inspired to Get Moving
A little creativity can go a long way to make your walk more fun. You might think of walking as a solo activity, but a companion makes it even more enjoyable. Ask colleagues, friends or family to join you.
A walk is a perfect excuse to take a break from a long day at your desk. If you work remotely, take a conference call on the go or plan your walk as a reward for completing a project.
Use your walk as a guilt-free opportunity to listen to a new audiobook or create a walking soundtrack of your favorite upbeat music.
Mix up your scenery. Taking new routes keeps your walks interesting and
helps prevent boredom from traveling the same predictable path.
If you need an extra nudge to get moving, a pet may help you get fit. Dog parents are more likely to reach their fitness goals than those without canine companions. In fact, according to the “Journal of Physical Activity & Health,” dog parents are 34% more likely to fit in 150 minutes of walking a week than non-dog owners. Pets can also help lower Stress, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and Blood Sugar and boost your overall happiness and well-being.

CITY NEWS
minants of health, a higher burden of Diabetes and High Blood Pressure in the Black community, barriers to health care access and genetics.
The APOL1 Gene Mutations evolved over the past 3,000-10,000 years in people who lived in Western and Central Africa and are associated with increased protection from a parasite carried by the Tsetse Fly that causes African sleeping sickness. While protecting from one disease, the mutation - if inherited in both APOL1 Genes - is more likely to lead to Kidney Disease in those of certain African descent, including people who identify as Black, African American, Afro-Caribbean or Latina or Latino. In fact, an estimated 13% of Black Americans have two APOL1 Gene Mutations, according to the American Kidney Fund. While not everyone who has two APOL1 Mutations will get Kidney Disease, there is a 1 in 5 chance they will go on to develop AMKD.
Identifying Symptoms
If you have Kidney Damage, symptoms may not occur until your Kidneys are close to failing. As Kidney Damage worsens, one or more of these symptoms may occur:
• Protein in Urine
• Swelling in legs or weight gain
• Feeling weak or tired
• High Blood Pressure
Should these symptoms occur and you have a family history of Kidney Disease, talk to a doctor about getting tested for Kidney Disease, as testing is the only way to determine Kidney Function. AMKD can cause damage to parts of the Kidney that filter blood or, in some cases, cause cells in the Kidneys to die, which can lead to damage and scarring that may eventually lead to Kidney Failure.
Getting a Diagnosis
The only way to know if you have APOL1 Gene Mutations is to do Genetic Testing via a Blood or Saliva Sample. Genetic Testing may be considered if you have Kidney Disease and don’t know the cause or if you’re considering donating a Kidney. Testing may also be considered if a family member is a carrier for the mutation. If you have questions about Genetic Testing, discuss your options with a doctor or ask for a referral to a Genetic Counselor.
Steps To Prevent Kidney Disease
There are currently no treatments available for AMKD. However, there are steps you can take to protect your Kidneys and promote general health. Work with your doctor to create a plan to prevent or delay the progression of Kidney Disease, which may include:
• Doctor visits to check how your Kidneys are working through Urine and Blood Tests
• Checking for and managing Diabetes and High Blood Pressure
• A healthy eating plan, which may involve limiting things like Sodium (Salt)
• Being active at least 30 minutes each day of the week
• Quitting Smoking or using Tobacco
If you have the APOL1 Gene Mutations, you may be able to take part in Clinical Trials. Trials could provide an opportunity for researchers to develop and test safe treatments for AMKD. Also speak with family members about having genetic testing done if you have the mutation as they may also have it.
Indulge Taste Buds With Better-For-You Snacks
(Family Features)The foundation of healthy eating may include nutritious breakfasts, lunches and dinners, but just as important are the snacks in-between meals. Regardless of when or where you snack, encourage better-for-you eating habits with nutritious nibbles to power through your day.
According to an online survey conducted among 1,000 Americans ages 18 and older across the U.S. by Wakefield Research on behalf of the American Pecan Promotion Board, Americans love snacks, and reach for them an average of three times a day.
However, where and when those snacks are eaten can vary from on the move to on the couch, from sunrise to after bedtime. Nearly a third (30%) of respondents are munching on snacks while in bed, calling it their favorite snacking spot. However, only 35% of their snack choices are considered healthy.
Fueling busy days can be easy with an option like Pecans. According to the survey, 66% of snackers enjoy pecans on their own with 58% eating them as part of a Trail Mix. If you’re among the 50% who reach for a snack in the late afternoon, you can turn to nutritious, satisfying solutions to indulge afternoon cravings without the guilt. With a pleasing crunch,
comforting creaminess and a satisfying chew, Pecans are the “no sacrifice” nut that can punch up your routine with both delicious taste and plant-based nutrition.
Just a handful of Pecans - about 19 halves - provides a good source of Fiber, Thiamin and Zinc and an excellent source of Copper and Manganese, a mineral that’s essential for Metabolism and Bone Health. They also provide a mix of Protein and Good Fats - 18 Grams of Unsaturated Fat, including Oleic Acid, and only 2 Grams of Unsaturated Fat - to help keep you full and energized throughout the day.
As an added bonus, their versatility and easy-to-pair profile makes them a perfect ingredient in recipes you can prepare in a cinch. For bite-sized treats that are packed with flavor and perfect for snack time, these Pecan Chickpea Cookie Dough Bites swap out Flour and Sugar in favor of blended Pecans, Chickpeas, Vanilla Extract, Cinnamon and Sea Salt with Dark Chocolate Chips folded in for a sweet finishing touch.
Or you can simply toss warm Pecans with Olive Oil and Sea Salt in this Roasted Pecans recipe for a grab-and-go snack that can be prepared in advance without worrying about spoiling. Another benefit of Pecans: They can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 9 months or frozen
up to 2 years, giving them a longer shelf life than many pantry favorites. Plus, they can be thawed and refrozen without losing flavor or texture.

Bonding With Your Four-Legged Friend
(Family Features)Your dog may be one of your best friends, but that bond doesn’t happen overnight. Investing in quality one-onone time can have a big impact on the bond you build with your four-legged companion.
One of the best ways to show dogs love is by keeping them healthy and spending quality time with them. Dedicating time every day to your dog’s well-being can help establish a connection, give you opportunities to express affection and foster shared bonding moments.
Training
Teaching your dog obedience isn’t just about eliminating undesirable behaviors. Training allows you to clearly communicate your expectations to your dog. It also builds your dog’s confidence through positive feedback received after mastering a command or new trick. Most dogs thrive on meeting their owners’ expectations, so consistent commands they can recognize
and follow help deepen your connection.
Another way to build trust through behavior training is establishing regular routines. Giving your dog a clear set of expectations helps build mutual trust. You can create routines around the key milestones of each day, such as mealtimes, walks and bedtime.
Grooming
Some pets love bathtime; others avoid it at all costs. Either way, you can make the experience more rewarding for you and your pet if you use it as an opportunity to spend some quality time together and shower your pet with extra affection.
Many pets are especially sensitive to grooming near their eyes, but keeping the eyes clean and free of dirt and buildup may help reduce the risk of infection, reduce tear stains and support your dog’s eye health. Consider options like Project Watson eye wash for dogs, which comes in an easy-to-use bottle with a tip that
allows for a steady stream of solution to use alone or by soaking a clean washcloth. Made with naturally inspired, highquality ingredients, the eye wash is designed to match the pH of a dog’s eye and help remove dried mucus, foreign materials, pollen and other irritants.
Between grooming sessions, you can also clean your dog’s eyes with eyelid wipes. The wipes, which are part of the Project Watson line of dog care products developed by the experts at Bausch + Lomb and evaluated by veterinarians, are formulated with micellar technology that cleanses and hydrates around the eyes while helping remove excess buildup associated with irritated, dry eyes. The gentle formula is paraben free, pHbalanced and fragrance free, made to mimic the ingredients found in natural tears and provide a soothing, gentle cleaning.
Exercise
Your dog needs daily exercise, just like you. Make your workouts do double duty by taking your dog along for a walk or jog. Just be sure to match your workout level to your pet’s abilities; just like humans, dogs need to build up endurance before tackling an extended route. Also be mindful of the terrain and ensure your pet’s paws are safe from potential risks like sharp or abrasive surfaces and extreme heat or cold.
Down Time
While dogs need plenty of practical attention and structure, some of the best bonding comes from letting loose and simply enjoying interacting with your pooch. That might mean wrestling with a favorite toy, throwing a ball or just snuggling on the couch with plenty of petting and scratches.

Hurricane Preparedness Tips For Aventura Residents
How To Prepare & Remain Safe During Tropical Storms, Weather Threats, And More
Traditional South Floridians are well aware of the impending hurricane season spanning from June 1st to November 30th, 2024. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the rapid formation and development of a full-scale La Niña – the unusually cooler seawater temperatures regulating the eastern and central Pacific Ocean – is expected to transform seasonal climate patterns venturing into the Atlantic Ocean. Faced with a dark shadow looming over many of our scheduled summer vacations, outdoor activities, and family events, residents are gearing up to critically monitor the trajectory of a potentially active season of storms and ominous weather forecasts.
Know Your Weather
Tropical Depression: An organized system of clouds and thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less.
Tropical Storm: An organized system of strong thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and maximum sustained winds of 39 - 73 mph.
Hurricane: An intense tropical weather system of strong thunderstorms with a well-defined surface circulation and maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher. In other parts of the world, the word hurricane is synonymous with typhoon and cyclone.
While long-term residents of the City of Excellence have incorporated annual preparation routines into their household lists of things to do, new renters and tem-
porary visitors continue to acclimate themselves to potential hurricane threats while commonly overlooking critical steps in the process. Here are five suggestions to ensure a stress-free preparedness plan:
1. Prioritize your family’s hurricane preparation NOW.
Experts recommend assembling enough supplies to last for 14 days. Most renters enjoy the benefits of living above ground level in an elevated condominium. Though the arrangement appears to ensure safety in theory, try to beat the last-minute rush and long lines by stocking up on all your essentials and nonperishable items as soon as possible. Along with food and water, flashlights, and first-aid kits, don’t forget to store an adequate amount of cash– along with significant documents such as insurance policies, passports, and driver licenses– in a waterproof box or container.
2. Clear your balconies and porches.
It’s your responsibility, be sure to move all outdoor and balcony furniture indoors to prevent items from blowing away or being tossed around by the wind, causing potential property damage to neighboring properties or injuries to pedestrians.
3. Park your car in a safe place.
Parking lots in Aventura vary based on their different propensities to flood. Don’t think you can park your car at the mall parking lot, that isn’t allowed. In this case, plan in advance where you are going to park, ensure the safety of your vehicle by

parking in a secure, elevated location free of standing water and debris. Many areas that aren’t traditionally flooded during heavy rain, many get flooded during a major storm. If possible, use your vehicle as an additional place to store emergency items in case evacuation is apparent, and remember to fill your tank with gas once a HurricaneWarning is confirmed.
4. Maintain your sense of community.
Emergencies tend to force us to prioritize the needs of ourselves, along with our immediate families. Hurricane Warnings offer a necessary opportunity to consider the needs of our friends and neighbors. Reach out to your neighbors to make sure they are safe and sound before, during, and after a storm. Offer assistance to some of our more vulnerable residents, such as the elderly and disabled communities. Share your resources and rely on your sense of humanity in connecting with others during this time.
5. Storm Surge Evacuation Planning Zone
Storm Surge has the ability to cause extensive damage posing the greatest threat during a severe weather event, and it is the main reason evacuation orders for
Miami-Dade County supports the health and medical needs of our most vulnerable populations during emergencies and disasters. They work closely with the Miami-Dade County Department of Emergency Management, the MiamiDade Medical Reserve Corps, and other response partners to ensure individuals who need assistance in maintaining their health during an emergency evacuation to a Special Needs Shelter, as in the event of a Hurricane. Several local agencies and organizations share the responsibility of serving our vulnerable populations during emergencies. These partners, including the Miami-Dade County Department of Emergency Management, American Red Cross, home health care agencies, hospitals, oxygen and durable medical equipment providers, and others, work together to plan and execute response strategies and protocols.
The Department of Health in MiamiDade provides and coordinates medical and nursing support staffing and management in Special Needs Shelters. They urge the entire community, and especially individuals with special needs, to have a plan and make arrangements to evacuate your home prior to a disaster. Deciding to “ride out the storm” may be dangerous and could result in delay in receiving assistance directly after an event from Fire-Rescue and other agencies. Learn CPR As A Life-Saving Skill
(Family Features) While many Americans agree Conventional CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) or Hands-Only CPR (HOCPR) significantly improve a person’s chance of survival from Cardiac Arrest, less than half are confident they can perform either Conventional CPR or HOCPR in an emergency.
Black or Hispanic adults who experience Cardiac Arrest outside a hospital setting are substantially less likely to receive lifesaving care from a bystander. In spite of these survey results, the American Heart Association is working to change this by empowering members of these communities to learn life saving CPR, and a growing segment of respondents are willing to act in an emergency.
The American Heart Association’s 2023 survey also revealed that as a result of the organization’s efforts to change attitudes about performing CPR, which can lead to lifesaving results, more than half of African Americans said they would be willing to perform CPR in an emergency compared to 37% two years ago. Additionally, Hispanic and Latino respondents are more confident in their abilities to perform CPR.
Committed to turning a nation of bystanders into lifesavers, the American Heart Association’s multi year initiative, Nation of Lifesavers, helps teens and adults learn how to perform CPR and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED); share that knowledge with friends and family; and engage employers, policymakers, philanthropists and others to create support for a nation of lifesavers.
“Each of us has the power in our own hands to respond to a sudden Cardiac Arrest,” said Anezi Uzendu, M.D., an
American Heart Association Expert Volunteer. “We simply need to know what to do and have the confidence to act.”
The long-term goal: to ensure that in the face of a cardiac emergency, anyone, anywhere is prepared and empowered to perform CPR and become a vital link in the chain of survival, aiming to double the survival rate of cardiac arrest victims by 2030. It takes just 90 seconds to learn how to save a life using HOCPR, which can be equally as effective as traditional CPR in the first few minutes of Cardiac Arrest.
Nationally supported by the Elevance Health Foundation, the American Heart Association’s HOCPR campaign is focused on chest compression-only CPR. If a teen or adult suddenly collapses due to a cardiac event, you can take two steps to save a life: immediately call emergency services and use these tips to begin performing HOCPR.
1. Position yourself directly over the victim.
2. Put the heel of one hand in the center of the chest and put your other hand on top of the first.
3. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest at a rate of 100-120 beats per minute, which is about the same tempo as the song “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, and at a depth of approximately 2 inches.
4. Continue compressions and use an AED, if available, until emergency help arrives.
