Pain around the teeth and the jaws can be symptoms of heart disease such as angina. If your dentist suspects a medical illness could be the cause of your toothache, he or she may refer you to a physician.

If you have a toothache, you may have a cavity or advanced gum disease.

The first sign of decay may be the pain you feel when you eat something sweet, very cold or very hot. If the pulp – the inside of the tooth that has tissue and nerves – has become irritated, this can cause pain in your tooth.

WHAT SYMPTOMS ACCOMPANY A TOOTHACHE? Because the symptoms of a toothache may resemble other medical conditions or dental problems, it can be difficult to diagnose the cause without a complete evaluation by your dentist. If you notice pus near the source of the pain, your tooth may have become abscessed, causing the surrounding bone to become infected. Or the pus could indicate gum disease, which is usually characterized by inflammation of the soft tissue, bleeding gums and abnormal loss of bone surrounding the teeth.

Contact your dentist immediately if you have any of the following symptoms: • Fever • Difficulty breathing or swallowing • Common causes of toothache • Swelling around the tooth area • Pain when you bite • A foul-tasting discharge • Continuous lasting pain  If you have tooth pain, read on to find your symptoms, possible causes and treatment options. If you have on-going pain or discomfort, contact your dentist.

• Symptom: Momentary sensitivity to hot or cold foods.

• Possible problem: If this discomfort lasts only moments, sensitivity to hot and cold foods generally does not signal a serious problem. The sensitivity may be caused by a small decay, a loose filling or by minimal gum recession that exposes small areas of the root surface.

• What to do: Try using toothpastes made for sensitive teeth. Brush up and down with a soft brush; brushing sideways wears away exposed root surfaces. If this is unsuccessful after several days, see your general dentist.

• Symptom: Sensitivity to hot or cold foods after dental treatment.

• Possible problem: Dental work may inflame the pulp inside the tooth causing temporary

• What to do: See a dentist for evaluation. If the problem is pulp tissue damage, your dentist may send you to an endodontist. Endodontists are dentists who specialize in pulprelated procedures.

Your endodontist will perform a procedure that cleans out the damaged pulp and fills and seals the remaining space. This procedure is commonly called a root canal.

• Symptom: Lingering pain, typically lasting more than 30 seconds, after eating hot or cold foods.

• Possible problem: This probably means the pulp has been damaged by deep decay or physical trauma.

• What to do: See your dentist or endodontist to save the tooth with root canal treatment.  COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTHACHE • Symptom: Constant and severe pain and pressure, swelling of gum and sensitivity to touch.

• Possible problem: A tooth may have become abscessed, causing an infection in the surrounding tissue and bone.

• What to do: See your endodontist for evaluation and treatment to relieve the pain and save the tooth. Take over-the-counter medications until you see the endodontist.

• Symptom: Dull ache and pressure in upper teeth and jaw.

• Possible problem: Grinding of teeth, a condition known as bruxism, can cause this type of ache. The pain of a sinus headache also is often felt in the face and teeth.

• What to do: For bruxism, consult your dentist. For sinus headache, try over-thecounter

medication. If pain is severe and chronic, see your endodontist or physician for evaluation. How do I alleviate the pain if I cannot see my dentist right away?

Anyone with a toothache should see a dentist at once for diagnosis and treatment. If left untreated, a toothache and the condition that is causing it can worsen. However, if you are unable to schedule an emergency appointment, the following self-care treatment can temporarily alleviate pain and inflammation from a toothache: • Rinse with warm salt water • Gently floss teeth to dislodge any food particles trapped between teeth.

• Take an over-thecounter pain reliever such as ibuprofen (Advil®) or acetaminophen (Tylenol®) to relieve pain.

• Never put aspirin or any other painkiller against the gums near the aching tooth, as it may burn the gum tissue.

• Apply an over-the-

counter antiseptic containing benzocaine directly to the irritated tooth and gum to temporarily relieve pain. Direct application of oil of cloves (eugenol) may also help to numb the gums. The oil may be rubbed directly on the sore area, or soak a small piece of cotton and apply it to the sore tooth.

• If there has been some trauma to the tooth, a cold compress may be applied on the outside cheek to relieve pain or swelling.

COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTHACHE  Is there a way to prevent a toothache?

The key to preventing toothaches is establishing a regular oral hygiene routine and sticking to it. For example, failure to brush and floss regularly after meals can significantly increase your risk of developing cavities, which can cause toothaches.

Here are a few tips to help reduce your risk for developing a toothache: • Brush at least twice a day, preferably after meals and snacks.

• Floss at least once a day to prevent gum disease.

• Visit your dentist regularly for oral examinations and a professional cleaning.

Commission held the first of two public hearings for the 2014-2015 annual budget

By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - This past Monday, the Hallandale Beach City Commission held the first of two public hearings for the 2014-2015 annual budget. The budget was passed with the roll back millage rate of 5.1918 mills. This is a reduction from last year. I recently wrote that we were planning on utilizing only $5,800 dollars of reserve funding as discussed and adopted at our workshop. After making adjustments prompted by the commission, the staff came back with a finalized budget that did not use reserves at all. We will be adding $80,000 to our reserve fund.

In basic terms, homesteaded property owners will see a decrease in their taxes due to the roll back rate.

Taxes on non-homesteaded properties will depend on the assessed valuations.

There were no increases in any fees. If you reside in one of the two safe neighborhood districts, the millage rate remained the same. These rates were not reduced due to the fact that the districts are to make improvements to camera systems and the neighborhoods wanted to maintain the level services.

The city has maintained in some cases increased services this budget. As I have shared with our readers, we continue to move the city forward by making strategic improvements to our infrastructure. We are opening two new parks, installing automated water meters, and setting the stage for a comprehensive citywide camera system to improve safety, designing and beginning to build a brand new main fire station and conducting a complete street audit in preparation of upgrading areas that do not have sidewalks, lighting, proper drainage and other basic amenities.

The next and final budget hearing will be held on Tuesday, September 30th, starting at 6 PM in the City Hall Chambers.

Over the past few weeks, I have had the opportunity to meet with many groups to discuss the budget and our Parks GO Bond.

During those meetings, a few question stood out that I would like to share with our readers.

Our North and South Beach parks are under construction. There is some confusion over the north beach facility that needs to be addressed. This park is a city park and will remain a city park. The developer of Beachwalk has paid for and is performing all of the construction as part of their development agreement.

As part of the DA, they can recommend a

vendor for the concessions but the vendor must be approved by the city commission.

More importantly, the concession agreement must be approved by the commission at a public meeting. The city manager will be in negotiation for the charges for service, operational hours, security controls and other operational aspects along with the developer to ensure that we have a quality venue. It has also been made clear to the developer and vendor that a Hallandale Beach resident rate for services must be part of the concession agreement.

This is not a private club and not for the exclusive use of Beachwalk. Just as South Beach has a concession area where you can rent chairs, umbrellas and pay for refreshments. The city will receive a shared revenue from the operations. The North Beach vendor will be guaranteeing a minimum of $60,000 dollars of revenue up front annually and then a per-

cent of sales. This item will be placed on the agenda when ready.

Currently, North Park is scheduled for a February opening and South Beach in January.

Another good question was about where residents can donate old clothes and slightly used household items.

Our city is very fortunate to have a human service department called The Hepburn Center located at the corner of MLK Boulevard (Northwest 8th Avenue) and Foster Road. They have a small thrift shop that helps to benefit the needy. There is a food pantry run by the center that provides food distribution to qualified residents. Residents can also drop off canned or unopened dry goods to help keep the pantry stocked.

I have also been asked about the city’s comprehensive planning efforts. Our city does have a comprehensive plan. It addresses everything having to do with development and the level of service for water, waste water,

sanitation, drainage, affordable housing, transportation, schools open space, etc. The plan is reviewed and amended every five years.

The city also has a Master Plan to guide redevelopment. This focuses on where and what types of development our residents want to maintain. The city has hired Treasure Coast Planning to develop the guidelines for the master plan. After many months of meeting with residents, property owners, developers and focus groups, the first draft

was presented to the Planning and Zoning Board last month for discussion. On September 23rd at 6:30 PM the P&Z Board will be reviewing the item again to provide recommendations to the commission.

From Commissioner Leo Grachow to Barbara Southwick and Claire Poole-Stern, there was plenty of support for the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League Antique Show lasy weekend. Great community event that was well attended.

"This was another great show," said Ken Moseley, who has been responsible for these impressive events through the years. "Each year, I have to believe it gets better - with more vendors and quality items that many look forward to purchasing."

Moseley spends much of the summer, promoting and preparing for the PAL event that has now become one of the signature fundraisers this quality organization runs two times a year. Volunteers work extremely hard to make this a success.

One of those who has been vital to the PAL Antique Show is board member Barbara Southwick. This year, she had so many items donated that would bring money to the event - and to a PAL program that has been recognized nationally for how it is run and

maintained.

Southwick joined over 38 vendors who had plenty of things that were sold during the weekend.

"This year, my dentist donated several items," Southwick pointed out.

"We also had paintings and other quality items that were on sale. This is a weekend that gets better every year."

While many vendors came from outside the area, locals such as Claire Poole-Stern was in her usual spot, selling and making money for her popular Treats For Soldiers, which she has been doing for nearly a decade. Poole-Stern sends packages to our servicemen and women around the world. She funds that endeavor by events such as the PAL Antique Show.

"The crowds were big once again this year," she said. "There were some new vendors this year who had a following, which added to the flow of traffic."

For shoppers like Carole Mason of Hollywood, this event was a chance to buy some jewelry and other knick-knacks that she loves collecting. Attending several antique

shows as well as yard sales and flea markets, finding those tough items are made easier by the number of different vendors who come to a show like this.

While she missed the show on Saturday to head to Boca Raton to take in a flea market, she had three bags filled with collectibles on Sunday, and she was pleased.

"I have been coming here for five years now and always find something," Mason explained.

"I like shows like this because you always come away with items that you cannot find anywhere else."

With so much green space available, Hollywood residents have many choices; something most urban dwellers don’t have.

San Francisco artist Rebar began Park(ing) Day in 2005 as a way to bring attention to the need of more green space in urban areas.

Since then Park(ing) Day has grown into an annual global event challenging people to rethink the way streets are used.

On Friday, September 19, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Hollywood will join with communities across the globe to celebrate Park(ing) Day. Multiple parking spots along N. 21st Avenue and Taylor Street in downtown Hollywood will be transformed into public parks complete with turf and custom seating.

SPRINTING FOR GOLD IN CHINA Hallandale Beach City Commissioners offered congratulations Monday, Sept.

15, 2014 to Hallandale High School hurdler Kimani Rushing for her performance in the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. The 16-year-old Ms. Rushing posted her personal best time in the qualifying round for the 100-meter hurdles in Nanjing.

A junior on the Charger Track and Field Team, Ms. Rushing was one of 93 youths, ages 15 to 18, selected for the USA Youth Olympic Team.

She is the reigning Florida High School Athletic Association Champion in the triple jump and 300-meter hurdles. She finished second in the 100meter hurdles this past season.

The Police Athletic League Hallandale Beach compiled a season record of 4-0-4 enroute to the title. Through the program, the HBCRA is purchasing vacant lots or dilapidated buildings and constructing new, modern single-family homes for sale. Prospective buyers must meet strict first-time homebuyer requirements, including attending classes, to qualify for the program.

HBCRA works with area banks to help the prospective homebuyers qualify for mortgages for the $140,000 two-bedroom, or $145,000 threebedroom homes. Rosh Hashanah - Celebrating a new year

The sounding of the shofar—a trumpet made from a ram’s horn—is an essential and emblematic part of both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is one of Judaism’s holiest days. Meaning “head of the year” or “first of the year,” the festival begins on the first day of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar, which falls during September or October.

Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday, also known as the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the two “High Holy Days” in the Jewish religion.

HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE OF

ROSH HASHANAH Rosh Hashanah is not mentioned in the Torah, Judaism’s founding religious text, and appears under different names in the Bible. Though the holiday was likely well established by the sixth century B.C., the phrase “Rosh Hashanah” shows up for the first time in the Mishna, a Jewish code of law compiled in 200 A.D. DID YOU KNOW? The ancient Jewish instrument known as the shofar, which is traditionally made from a ram's horn, has been used in classical and contemporary music, including composer Jerry Goldsmith's score for the 1979 film "Alien."

The Hebrew calendar begins with the month of Nisan, but Rosh Hashanah occurs at the start of Tishrei, when God is said to have created the world.

For this reason, Rosh Hashanah can be seen as the birthday of the world rather than New Year’s in the secular sense; still, it is on Rosh Hashanah that the number of the civil year increases. The Mishna described three other “new years” in the Jewish calendar in addition to Rosh Hashanah. Nisan 1 was used to resume the cycle of months and measure the duration of kings’ reigns. Elul 1 resembled the start of the modern fiscal year and determined the tithing of animals for charity or sacrifice.

Shevat 15 calculated the age of fruit-bearing trees and is now celebrated as the minor holiday of Tu B’Shevat.

According to tradition, God judges all creatures during the 10 Days of Awe between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, deciding whether they will live or die in the coming year.

Jewish law teaches that God inscribes the names of the righteous in the “book of life” and condemns the wicked to death on Rosh Hashanah; people who fall between the two categories have until Yom Kippur to perform “teshuvah,” or repentance. As a result, observant Jews consider Rosh Hashanah and the days surrounding it a time for prayer, good deeds, reflecting on

past mistakes and making amends with others.

CELEBRATING ROSH HASHANAH Unlike modern New Year’s celebrations, which are often raucous parties, Rosh Hashanah is a subdued and contemplative holiday. Because Jewish texts differ on the festival’s length, Rosh Hashanah is observed for a single day by some denominations and for two days by others. Work is prohibited, and religious Jews spend much of the holiday attending synagogue. Because the High Holy Day prayer services include distinct liturgical texts, songs and customs, rabbis and their congregations read from a

special prayer book known as the machzor during both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The sounding of the shofar—a trumpet made from a ram’s horn—is an essential and emblematic part of both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The ancient instrument’s plaintive cry serves as a call to repentance and a reminder to Jews that God is their king.

CUSTOMS AND SYMBOLS OF ROSH HASHANAH Apples and honey: One of the most popular Rosh Hashanah customs involves eating apple slices dipped in honey, sometimes after saying a special prayer.

lieved apples had healing properties, and the honey signifies the hope that the new year will be sweet. Rosh Hashanah meals usually include an assortment of sweet treats for the same reason.

Round challah: On Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath) and other holidays, Jews eat loaves of the tradi-

tional braided bread known as challah. On Rosh Hashanah, the challah is often baked in a round shape to symbolize either the cyclical nature of life or the crown of God. Raisins are sometimes added to the dough for a sweet new year.

Tashlich: On Rosh Hashanah, some Jews practice a cus-

tom known as tashlich (“casting off”), in which they throw pieces of bread into a flowing body of water while reciting prayers.

As the bread, which symbolizes the sins of the past year, is swept away, those who embrace this tradition are spiritually cleansed and renewed.

“L’shana tovah”:

Jews greet each other on Rosh Hashanah with the Hebrew phrase “L’shana tovah,” which translates to “for a good year.”

This is a shortened version of the Rosh Hashanah salutation “L’shanah tovah tikatev v’taihatem” (“May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year”).

Rosh Hashanah food customs are rich in tradition

Rosh Hashanah (‫שאר‬ ‫ )הנשה‬is the Jewish New Year. Over the centuries it has become associated with many food customs, for instance, eating sweet food to symbolize our hopes for a "Sweet New Year."

Slices of apple dipped in honey are often served to Jewish children – either at home or in religious school - as a special Rosh Hashanah snack.

HONEY (APPLES AND HONEY) Biblical texts often mention "honey" as the sweetener of choice though some historians believe that the honey referenced in the Bible was actually a sort of fruit paste. Real honey was, of course, available but much more difficult to acquire! Honey represented good living and wealth. The Land of Israel is often called the land of "milk and honey" in the Bible.

On the first night of Rosh Hashanah, we dip challah into honey and say the blessing over the challah. Then we dip

ROUND CHALLAH After apples and honey, round loaves of challah are the most recognizable food symbol of Rosh Hashanah. Challah is a kind of braided egg bread that is traditionally served by Jews on Shabbat. During Rosh HaShanah, however, the loaves are shaped into spirals or rounds symbolizing the continuity of Creation. Sometimes raisins or honey are added to the recipe in order to make the resulting loaves extra sweet.

HONEY CAKE Many Jewish households make honey cakes on Rosh Hashanah as another way to symbolically express their wishes for a Sweet New Year. Often people will use a recipe that has been passed down through the generations.

On the second night of Rosh Hashanah, we eat a "new fruit" – meaning, a fruit that has recently come into season but that we have not yet had the opportunity to eat.

When we eat this new fruit, we say the shehechiyanu blessing thanking God for keeping us alive and bringing us

to this season. This ritual reminds us to appreciate the fruits of the earth and being alive to enjoy them.

A pomegranate is often used as this new fruit. In the Bible, the Land of Israel is praised for its pomegranates. It is also said that this fruit contains 613 seeds just as

there are 613 mitzvot.

Another reason given for blessing and eating pomegranate on Rosh Hashanah is that we wish that our good deeds in the ensuing year will be as plentiful as the seeds of the pomegranate.

Some tasty dishes for Rosh Hashanah MATZOH BALLS 1 cup matzoh meal 4 large eggs 1/4 cup schmaltz (chicken fat; see note) 1/4 cup chicken stock 1 teaspoon salt pinch of ground pepper When you make homemade chicken stock and cool it overnight, you’ll find that the top is covered by a layer of solidified fat or schmaltz. Skim it off and save it. You’ll want it to be room temp when you use it.

In a medium bowl, beat the eggs. Add the stock, schmatz, salt and pepper, and mix well.

Add matzo meal and stir thoroughly.

Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 6 hours, or overnight.

Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil. Moisten your palms with cold water, and form a bit of the mixture into a ball 3/4 inch in diameter. Drop it into the pot, and repeat with the remaining mixture until you’ve made all your matzoh balls.

Reduce the heat slightly and cover. Simmer for about 20-25 minutes, removing the matzoh balls with a slotted spoon.

Keep them in a large bowl, then add to soup no more than 30 min-

utes before serving.

STRING BEANS WITH MUSTARD DRESSING AND CURED SHALLOTS 1 small red onion or shallot, thinly sliced 1 1/2 pounds of string beans, trimmed 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 1/2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 small garlic clove, crushed 1 1/2 teaspoons mild honey 1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt pinch cayenne pepper 3 tablespoons olive oil

Generously butter a 9X13-inch pan that looks nice enough to be set on the table. Cook the noodles in highly salted water according to package directions, stopping after the minimum cooking time, about 8 minutes. Drain the noodles.

While the noodles are cooking, combine cheese, and sugar and beat with a stand or handheld mixture and beat until smooth. Add the remaining ingredients and beat again, until smooth and lightened. As soon as you’ve drained them, add the hot noodles to this mixture and stir to combine. Spread it into the prepared pan, and cover with plastic wrap. Let sit at least 1 hour on the

Place the sliced onion or shallot in a small bowl and cover with the vinegar. Set aside to let cure for 10-15 minutes.

Bring a pot of water to boil. Salt it generously and add the trimmed string beans. Cook uncovered for 4-6 minutes, until just tender. When they’re done, drain them, then spread them out onto the towel-lined pan to fully dry. This will allow the dressing to coat the beans.

In your salad bowl, combine the lemon juice, mustard, garlic,

honey, salt, and cayenne. Whisk until smooth. Slowly whisk in the oil until creamy.

Mix the beans into the dressing. Drain the onions and toss to combine. This salad is best if you let it sit for 15-30 minutes after. That’s what it’s great for picnics–it only gets more flavorful with time.

ROSH HASHANAH BRISKET 6 lbs brisket 8 garlic cloves, cut lengthwise into 4 pieces 1 quart beef stock 2 large onions, sliced 1 cup ketchup 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 tsp salt 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp garlic powder 1/4 tsp cayenne 1/2 tsp dried thyme 2 bay leaves Preheat the oven to 500°F. Using a paring knife, cut small incisions in the meat and shove the pieces of garlic into them. Do this until the meat is stuffed with garlic all over. Place the brisket in a rimmed baking dish (preferably metal) and brown it in the oven, about 10 minutes per side.

Remove the meat, and pour in the beef stock (NOTE: if you are using

a pyrex dish, wait a few minutes for the pan to acclimate to room temperature so it does not shatter. For more on this, see my disaster here). Turn the oven down to 350 degrees, cover the dish with foil, and cook in the oven for 1 hour.

In the meantime, saute the onions in 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-low heat until soft and caramelized, about 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove the meat from the oven, and add the remaining ingredients to the pan. Using a fork, whisk them all together with the beef stock. When the onions have finished cooking, arrange them on top of the meat. Cover the pan again with foil, and return it to the oven for 23 hours APPLE CAKE WITH CARAMEL GLAZA For the cake: 1 cup (2 sticks) butter 1 1/3 cups sugar 2 large eggs 1 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 3/4 teaspoon salt 2 cups chopped, peeled apples (about 2)

1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts For the caramel sauce: 1 cup brown sugar 1/3 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup butter 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 pinch salt Heat oven to 325 degrees. Grease a loaf pan.

In a large bowl cream the butter and the sugar with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add the eggs, beat well, then mix in vanilla.

In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, soda, powder and salt. Add these to the wet ingredients and mix until blended. Fold in the apples and the nuts. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 1 hour, or until toothpick comes out clean.

Meanwhile, combine the butter, sugar, and cream in a small saucepan. Over medium heat, melt them together stirring more or less constantly. When the edges start to simmer, cook for 3 more minutes, then add the vanilla and remove from the heat.

When the cake has cooled for 20 minutes, prick all over with a fork and spoon the caramel sauce evenly on the top.

Health care teams are demanding nurses with doctorate degrees

• Nurses are responding to meet this need and leading the care team charge through education (BPT) - When open enrollment for the Health Insurance Marketplaces closed earlier this year, more than 7.1 million Americans had signed up for health insurance coverage. As millions of new patients continue to gain access to insurance under the Affordable Care Act, industry leaders are facing the challenge of providing quality care while meeting the needs of an aging population and patients with more chronic health issues.

One emerging solution is the concept of "care teams" that more closely engage health care professionals from all disciplines.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends health care delivery through such multidisciplinary teams, among other tools, to help health care systems lower costs while continuing to provide the best possible care for each patient. Care teams that include nurse

practitioners and physician assistants are proven to alleviate demand for physicians without increasing their supply, according to 2013 research from RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research and analytics institution.

Doctoral education in nursing practice prepares nurses with enhanced leadership skills to strengthen practice and health care delivery, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). For this reason, nurses with doctoral education are being emphasized as an option for future leadership of care teams, as noted in the IOM's report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. Nursing educators are taking note, with more institutions offering advanced nursing degree programs that prepare nurses through specific curriculum focused on implementing efficiencies in health care de-

livery and enhancing nurses' leadership skills.

Nurses are responding to meet this need and leading the care team charge through continued education.

The AACN reports nearly 15,000 students were enrolled in Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree programs in 2013, a 21.6 percent jump from 2012.

Chamberlain College of Nursing is one education provider that is responding to the industry call to action to prepare nurses to develop and drive care teams. Chamberlain offers a DNP Healthcare Systems Leadership specialty track designed for master'sprepared nurses who want to pursue advanced leadership roles within their chosen specialty. Students learn about leadership in the context of nursing informatics, health policy, higher education administration and executive health care practice.

New women's center will open soon at the Mount Sinai Aventura Campus AVENTURA - Mount Sinai Medical Center will kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Thursday, October 2, with the inauguration of a beautiful, new Women’s Center in Aventura. The Mount Sinai Aventura Women’s Center will feature a spa-like environment coupled with advanced diagnostic technology and highly-skilled radiologists. The center will offer greater patient privacy, comfort and convenience while providing excellent medical care.

Located at 2845 Aventura Boulevard, the Mount Sinai Aventura Women’s Center will offer sophisticated medical expertise, as well as advanced diagnostic and treatment options. The center will provide a variety of screening and diagnostic services, including mammograms, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided procedures using advanced digital imaging technology. Pelvic and obstetric ultrasounds and bone densitometry with fat absorption detection capabilities will also be available, as well as computerized tomography (CT), open MRI scans and all forms of Xrays.

The center is being built with an emphasis on privacy and comfort, with a dedicated waiting area and dressing room for breast imaging patients, as well as a coffee bar and refreshment area. It will feature a warm, inviting setting designed to put patients at ease during their visit.

Mount Sinai offers comprehensive breast care at two convenient locations, Miami Beach and Aventura. Together, the two centers provide a full range of screening, diagnostic, counseling and support services to combat breast cancer, the second leading cause of death among women.

Mount Sinai’s Lila and Harold Menowitz Comprehensive Breast Center in Miami Beach was the first facility in Florida to receive accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. It also is recognized as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

In an effort to further provide the women in our community with quality, comprehensive care, Mount Sinai has also developed a Women’s Centered Care program, which consolidates the various clinicians involved in women’s care, all under one roof. This approach to treatment and services sets Mount Sinai apart from other facilities in the region. A multidisciplinary team of specially trained physicians who understand the health care needs of women work together to optimize patients’ health and well-being, and coordinate care across specialties. In addition, a patient navigator is available to assist patients in accessing any needed services.

As Brann points out, industry advancement requires more nurses be prepared to facilitate the transition from practice that occurs in silos to practice that includes comprehensive input from all disciplines and the patient to ultimately elevate patient care and improve system efficiencies. Under these models, patient satisfaction increases because they are receiving more coordinated care and have more access to the resources and services they need.

It’s thought that the antioxidants help protect you from environmental carcinogens such as passive tobacco smoke.

Cut out herbs before ops. Some herbal supplements – from the popular St John's Wort and ginkgo biloba to garlic, ginger, ginseng and feverfew – can cause increased bleeding during surgery, warn surgeons. It may be wise to stop taking all medication, including herbal supplements, at least two weeks before surgery, and inform your surgeon about your herbal use.
