Graffiti Buster Partner with Police to Fight the Blight

The Prime Time girls with Coach Jeff Fogel By Marylynne Newmark sfsuntimes@aol.com

It all began as the brainchild of a 6th grader, Ahava Greenbaum, who thought ‘out of the box’ in creating her Bat Mitzvah project to include a community service effort for her school, Hochberg Prep-

Beth Torah. Ahava is a key player on the 5th6th grade girls’ Prime Time Basketball Team. With the encouragement of her mother, Susanne Reiter, and her basketball coach at the MAR-JCC, Jeff Fogel, they developed a “Points 4 Love” cam-

paign that involves Ahava’s love of basketball and interest in working with special needs individuals. The concept behind “Points 4 Love” is for Ahava and her Prime Time Team to commit

AVENTURA Vertical Life In Luxury, But With Concerns By Frank Fernandez, Chief of Police City of Hollywood From the smallest village to the largest city, all around the world municipalities and private property owners are battling an enemy that is difficult to apprehend and whose impact is immense. The United States spends more than $25 billion annually in graffiti eradication efforts. The figure skyrockets if you include individual property owner expenses. The City of Hollywood is taking a stand to fight the blight! The Hollywood Police Department’s Code Enforcement Unit has hired a dedicated full-time staff member whose sole responsibility is to assist in the eradication of graffiti throughout the city. The Graffiti Buster heads from location to location to touch-up areas where graffiti has been reported. While removal of graffiti on private property is the responsibility of the property owner, the Graffiti Buster will assist in touching-up small areas with light colored paint to ensure quick removal. Prompt removal is the key to discouraging additional graffiti. Typically, taggers write on what they can reach. To discourage graffiti consider planting landscaping in

front of fencing, walls or other empty spans that could be used as a “blank canvas”. Landscaping not only beautifies an area but also assists by pushing taggers away from the canvas thereby reducing graffiti. Security cameras are also an effective deterrent and may aid in apprehensions. Realtors estimate that the purchase price for a home decreases by 20% in areas victimized by graffiti vandalism, which decreases the perception of safety. Graffiti also gives the perception of an economically depressed area with low community values that can discourage tourism and economic health. We need your help to keep Hollywood pretty and welcoming. If you see someone acting suspiciously, carrying spray paint, paint cans, other paint related items or step ladders in areas that seem out of place, call the Police nonemergency number at 954-967-4357. Report graffiti for eradication as soon as it appears by entering the address into Help Me Hollywood. The Help Me Hollywood application can be found at www.hollywoodfl.org or in the App store on your mobile device. You can also call Code Enforcement at 954-967-3061.

Being a city of mega-story glassencased high rise buildings sitting on the Atlantic shoreline, is fabulous. However, excitement and envy of life in this City of Excellence with its skyscraping condos, vulnerable to tropical storms and hurricanes, tapers a little at this time of the year. The City of Aventura is designated as an evacuation zone for any Storm Category 2 or higher. That means that NOAA recommends evacuation. Although the decision to evacuate is

strictly personal, since most residents feel safe with storm grade windows and hurricane shutters, Aventura City Management also warns that remaining at home in your condo in the event of a pending Category 2 or higher hurricane is risky and dangerous. The City instructs that wind force increases greatly with height and storm surge triggers power failure, large debris buildup and blocked stairwells. Flooding can keep residents trapped
