Hollywood Wins the John A. Sasso National Community Development Week Award This spring, the City of Hollywood’s Department of Community and Economic Development submitted their National Community Development Week activities to the National Community Development Association (NCDA) for the John A. Sasso National Community Development Week Award. The City was just informed that for the second consecutive year, the activities presented during National Community Development week have earned this prestigious award. City representatives have been invited to receive the award and share information about the city’s National Community Development activities at the 45th Annual National Community Development Association’s Conference at the Crowne Plaza in Columbus, Ohio. Each of the winners of the 2014 John A. Sasso National Community Development Award will profile their National CD Week activities during the week of June 25-27, 2014.

The Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation, founded by former Miami Dolphins Player Twan Russell, is one of the organizations in Hollywood that was highlighted during National Community Development Week. The foundation receives CDBG funding from the City of Hollywood for its programs.

HALLANDALE BEACH Commitment to its parks helped earn the City the designation as Playful City USA for the second consecutive year. In the past year, Hallandale Beach completed, opened Joseph Scavo Park and will dedicate the new B.F. James Park on Sat., July 12. Page 6A

The vision for this upscale city began as a dream of Robert C. Graham in 1925, a monied young man, who like many others of his time, set their eyes on Florida. He formed the Detroit-based Miami Heights Corporation, along with Walter O. Briggs, and Carl Fisher and purchased 245 acres of undeveloped partially swampy marsh that extended from the bay to the Atlantic Ocean just north of Miami Beach. Carl Fisher literally had paved the way by developing Dixie Highway to extend from his home state of Indiana to Miami. Graham, who was co-owner with his brothers of Graham-Paige Motors, visited Fisher while exploring potential for speculation. When he was shown this 245acre parcel of undeveloped swampy marsh land just north of Miami Beach that extended from the inland bay to the Atlantic beach, he fell in love with it. He encouraged Fisher and Walter Briggs, owner of the Detroit Tigers to partner with him in developing “a dream city”. They hired Harland Bartholomew & Associates, one of the leading urban planning firms of the twentieth century, to develop a Master Plan for a modern community with exceptionally high standards that would pro-
