Hollywood Wins the John A. Sasso National Community Development Week Award This spring, the City of Hollywood’s Department of Community and Economic Development submitted their National Community Development Week activities to the National Community Development Association (NCDA) for the John A. Sasso National Community Development Week Award.

The City was just informed that for the second consecutive year, the activities presented during National Community Development week have earned this prestigious award.

City representatives have been invited to receive the award and share information about the city’s National Community Development activities at the 45th Annual National Community Development Association’s Conference at the Crowne Plaza in Columbus, Ohio.

Each of the winners of the 2014 John A. Sasso National Community Development Award will profile their National CD Week activities during the week of June 25-27, 2014.

The Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation, founded by former Miami Dolphins Player Twan Russell, is one of the organizations in Hollywood that was highlighted during National Community Development Week.

The foundation receives CDBG funding from the City of Hollywood for its programs.

The vision for this upscale city began as a dream of Robert C. Graham in 1925, a monied young man, who like many others of his time, set their eyes on Florida. He formed the Detroit-based Miami Heights Corporation, along with Walter O. Briggs, and Carl Fisher and purchased 245 acres of undeveloped partially swampy marsh that extended from the bay to the Atlantic Ocean just north of Miami Beach.

Carl Fisher literally had paved the way by developing Dixie Highway to extend from his home state of Indiana to Miami. Graham, who was co-owner with his brothers of Graham-Paige Motors, visited Fisher while exploring potential for speculation. When he was shown this 245acre parcel of undeveloped swampy marsh land just north of Miami Beach that extended from the inland bay to the Atlantic beach, he fell in love with it. He encouraged Fisher and Walter Briggs, owner of the Detroit Tigers to partner with him in developing “a dream city”.

They hired Harland Bartholomew & Associates, one of the leading urban planning firms of the twentieth century, to develop a Master Plan for a modern community with exceptionally high standards that would pro-

Construction continues to move ahead on schedule

As our city eases into summer, there are still many issues and projects our city is working on. The BF James Park and Pool opening is scheduled in 4 weeks.

The original site was sold as part of a deal that was negotiated with the owners of old city hall. The proceeds from that deal will offset the land costs with additional proceeds going towards the station.

The old city hall site has been fully demolished and is ready for sod.

On the land use side, the city commission has taken steps to support a multifamily development on SE 9th Street. The owner requested that commercial property be changed to allow for residential use. The two parcels will be combined to create a 4-unit two story building. This development ties directly to our Master Plan for the SE area. The city is also working with Treasure Coast Planning Agency to develop our new development codes.

There were two requests recently to mitigate code fines. The city commission has set a policy that code fines accumulated can be reduced up to 90% administratively if the property in question has been brought to code.

The BF James Park and Pool opening is scheduled in 4 weeks you have not been out to see the project and your tax dollars at work, I highly recommend you drive by and see this new park. Definitely save the date to come out and celebrate on Saturday, July 12th starting at 10 a.m.

The NE drainage project is also finishing up. Crews are working on the pumping stations and preparing to complete the underground area beneath the stations.

Next step will be the installation of the pumps.

14th Avenue residents are also seeing progress. Swales are being planted, some drives have been asphalted and two-way traffic is beginning to be implemented in more areas.

The city is planning to repave the entire roadway.

The commission requested that city staff look into implementing more parking

adding much more parking and be cost prohibitive. The road will be put back in the original configuration. Bus shelters, sidewalks and new landscaping will all be included. Once again, we want to thank all of the residents that had to endure the inconveniences of this project.

The city has also approved a basis for design contract for our Complete Streets initiative. Over the next 9 months, the firm will be conducting an inventory of all the city’s public domain assets. This inventory will be used to establish every areas’ needs so we can move forward with capital improvements. The goal is to make sure every area of the city has sidewalks, lighting and safe access to transportation alternatives.

During the city commissions visioning session last year, one of the main goals established was improving our blighted areas and corridors through effective code enforcement.

We have taken measures to strengthen our process for code enforcement. Without a fair and equitable process, many absentee property owners have been able to take advantage of the process. They have waited and delayed improvements anticipating a pass from the city when it comes to fines.

While the goal of code enforcement is compliance, there is a fine line between gaming the system while adversely impacting our neighborhoods.

The city commission also denied a variance on a single family Golden Isles home.

This application was very controversial since it is the first one applied for since the Golden Isles Restrictive Covenants have not been enforced by the city. The request was to build 9.6 feet into the rear setback, 3.3 feet into the front set back, 2 feet into side setbacks and 22 inches over the height restrictions. It basically was super-sizing a residential house by taking advantage of the citywide code that allows for administrative variances

under 25% to be granted. If not for residents and neighbors who now understand the importance of preserving the rules coming out, the requested variance would have set a precedence.

Golden Isles was built with specific deed and restrictive convents when it comes to building size and setbacks.

The rules also provided that the city must give all plans to an architectural board for review and recommendations. The city had an ordinance that required the adherence to these rules to preserve the neighborhood and provide protection of privacy. Due to state law, the city could no longer enforce the rules unless they were adopted by a specific ordinance.

The home owners board worked hard to get the ordinance passed, but due to misinformation in the neighborhood by a political faction and fear mongering, the ordinance did not move forward. This was even after three attorneys recommended it. I am sure that this situation shed light on why we need the city to adopt the ordinance for the area.

In the spirit of Building Community Together, the City will present voters with the option to issue $58.5 million in general

obligation bonds at the November 4, 2014 general election. This bond will complete the vision set in the Parks Master Plan and will redevelop all remaining parks in the City.

The designation came days before the annual National Kids to Parks Day Observance, 9 a.m.

Saturday, May 17, at Ingalls Park, 735 SW 1st St. National Kids to Parks Day is sponsored by the National Park Trust. Hallandale Beach joins with 25 other Florida communities and 211 other municipalities nationwide to earn the Playful City USA designation. There are six states with no communities earning the honor.

ELECTION Qualifying for Hallandale Beach City Commission seats 1 and 2 begins at noon Monday, June 16, and runs through noon Friday, June 20. Candidate qualification forms must be submitted to the City Clerk’s office, 400 S. Federal Highway. At the time of qualifying, each candidate must designate which seat they are seeking.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014.

To qualify, candidates must have lived within the City continu-

ously for at least the past year.

Currently, Seat 1 is held by Commissioner Anthony Sanders and Seat 2 is held by Commissioner Leo Grachow.

Candidates may drop off qualification forms from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, and 8 a.m. until noon on Friday, June 20.

(density) of the blood thickens, slowing the delivery process of the blood with its vital oxygen to the cells.

The body swings into a homeostatic crisis, trying to regulate itself. Blood vessels constrict. Cardiac output is slowed down, causing the heart to pump harder. That increases the heart rate, and blood pressure rises. Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) is fully activated to slow down urine production from the kidney in an attempt to retain as much fluid as possible, and the thirst mechanism demands rehydration.

In this battle for homeostasis (the body’s constant struggle to remain within normal limits of pH, osmolality, oxygen, freedom from attack by free radicals and infection), the body now has to deal with dehydration.

The body’s first line of defense is to ensure that the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys and other vital organs receive sufficient oxygen.

This puts a major decline of oxygen delivery to muscles and peripheral or less essential areas of the body. That creates cramping.

LeBron experienced the first stage of body shutdown. He knew it, and he was smart. He listened to his body.

Critics, take note. Isn’t it more important to keep a star athlete like him in good shape, healthy, and able to continue on a fabulous career that has brought reward to so many?

What about our young athletes?

This brings to mind our kids running out on the fields in sports camps in the sultry summer heat. Are we pushing them too hard? Their young bodies function the same way. Dehydration, even heat stroke, is very common among kids in the summer.

We should all be aware that thirst is not a good measure of dehydration because by the time we are thirsty, we are already dehydrated.

Gatorade vs water?

I know that soccer moms are usually out there with snacks, water and Gatorade. The question is: Is Gatorade better than water?

We all know that there is electrolyte loss with sweat, which we have been conditioned to know is the purpose of drinking Gatorade.

What are electrolytes? They are the minerals in your blood, urine and body fuids that have the electric charge that stimulates the body to function. Maintaining the right balance of electrolytes regulates the body’s blood chemistry, muscle action and other processes.

Sodium, calcium, potassium, chlorine, phosphate and magnesium are the major electrolytes needed. We normally get them from the foods we eat and the fluids we drink. With excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhea or kidney issuess, problems most often occur with the levels of sodium, potassium or calcium.

Gatorade and most sport drinks contain these elements, as well as several sugars.

How Gatorade Works The manufacturer claims that the carbs and salts in the product stimulate rapid fluid absorption and rehydration. The carbohydrates also provide the energy that feeds working muscles. Finally, they claim that the salts and sugars generate thirst, and this encourages the athlete to drink more fluid.

Rapid Fluid Absorption. Rapid fluid absorption is important during strenuous athletic activity in order to avoid dehydration.

Rapid Rehydration. Gatorade claims that sodium in their drink helps maintain body fluids, unlike water and caffeinated beverages that promote water loss through increased urination.

Carbohydrate Energy. The two sugars, sucrose and glucose-fructose in Gatorade are the carbohydrates that provides energy needed for muscles to perform.

Encourages Thirst. The presence of sodium and glucose make you thirsty, which stimulates more fluid consumption, so manufacturers claim that athletes will drink until they are completely rehydrated.

They also maintain that salt enhances flavor and balances with the citric acid to maintain a proper pH level, which induces even more fluid intake.

Research at the University of South Carolina, seems to confirm that. According to a study performed there by J.M. Davis and colleagues, Gatorade is absorbed in the blood stream as fast as water, helping to provide rapid rehydration, and they added that Gatorade is superior to plain water for improving physical performance during prolonged physical activity.

So, back to LeBron. He said, “I’m the easiest piñata in sports, and I don’t care.”

German prisoners caught on land or off our shores were housed on the site of the current Bal Harbour Shops.

When the war ended in 1945, Graham converted some of the barracks into apartments to quickly house new residents, since the State required 25 men residing in an area in order to apply for incorporation. One of these new residents was Stanley Whitman, who later built the Bal Harbour Shops.

This newly incorporated village at first was named Bay Harbour, but the name was discarded since it did not identify a community on the ocean. City leaders decided to combine letters from the words “bay” and “Atlantic”, creating the innovative “Bal Harbour.”

During the 1940s, nine world-class resorts opened, attracting an upscale market with their ultra-modern design and amenities. In the 1950s, Bal Harbour and Miami Beach were considered “the American Riviera”, attracting top entertainment like Count Basie, Guy Lombardo, Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack.

Arthur Godfrey was the first to broadcast his radio and television show from the Kenilworth, followed later by Jackie Gleason and Ed Sullivan.

The Americana Hotel, later becoming the Sheraton Bal Harbour, hosted three nationally televised Constitutional conventions, with President Kennedy at the podium in 1961, President Johnson in 1967, and President Nixon in 1971.

Bal Harbour Shops Residential development flourished, and in 1957, developer Stanley Whitman purchased 16 acres that originally was planned for a grocery store and gas station, to build a new high-fashion open air shopping center with lush landscaping and a parking structure.

Bucking the trend of the day in 1965 to build convenient strip centers or large box airconditioned shopping malls, Whitman’s plan for a lushly landscaped, luxury open-air fashion center with high end stores, was scoffed at.

However, when Neiman Marcus

agreed to open its first specialty store outside of Texas there, and some upscale European boutiques joined them, Saks Fifth Avenue signed on, and the rest is history.

In 2012, the 450,000 sq ft.

Bal Harbour Shops was ranked by the International Council of Shopping Center’s publication, Shopping Centers Today, as “the World’s Most Productive”, based on sales per sq. ft. With a reported $2,555-per sq ft in sales, Bal Harbour Shops, still

The church congregation made the trade in exchange for The Shops committing to fund and build a new 50,000-sq. ft. eco-friendly church at the intersection of Bal Bay Drive and Park Drive. Church members will also be given free parking spaces in The Shops.

The 69-year old Church-bythe-Sea will be moved to make way for expansion of Bal Harbour Shops.

Proposed plans there includes a new specialty department store, 3040 high-end retailers and a Cine-bistro, a dine-in luxury movie theater. The Bal Harbour Shops expansion is expected to cost in excess of $200 mil-

AMERICA: SO PROUDLY WE HAIL

By Phyllis Green It was a spirited day; filled with pride, patriotism, and performance. The Installation Luncheon for Leading Ladies, Inc. auxiliary of the Transplant Foundation, Inc. greeted numerous highlights on May 28 at the Newport Beachside Hotel and Resort in Sunny Isles. It was a day called “So Proudly We Hail”, honoring the Troops and Veterans.

Starting at the reception, guests signed in amidst a medley of songs of America, sung by a bevy of ladies, whomever wished to do so, accompanied on the keyboard by Maestro Peter Fuchs. Upon entering the ballroom, centerpieces of adorable dolls singing “G-d Bless America”, as the incoming officers were seated on stage. A uniformed Honor Guard of four police officers, courtesy of Sunny Isles Police Department headed by Captain Dwight Snyder, marched into the room in cadence, proudly displaying the American Flag.

Chairwoman Myrna Goldman welcomed everyone on behalf of her co-chairs Nancy Sutton and Phyllis Green, and then introduced the delightful Laurie Jennings, Co-Anchor of Channel 10.

After some enchanting stories from Laurie, she installed the Officers and Board for 2014-2016. Phyllis Green, President, Joan Klempner, Executive Vice-President, Nancy Sutton, Co-ordinating Vice-President, Candi Casino, Liaison to the Foundation, Judy Sorota, Recording Secretary, Claudia Genteel, Executive Secretary, Peggy Grant, Treasurer, Elaine Steinhauser, Reservations Director, Bererly Berland, Membership Director, and Directors: Ann Anello, Jackie Edwards, Veronica Fuchs, Sonia Klein, Diane Lapin, Rachell Paston, Riva Weinthal, and Lillyan Winepol.

The above mentioned leaders of this organization, with the many supporters, have raised over one and a half million dollars, since its inception in 1995. The goal is to assist the Transplant Foundation with patient services such as housing for families, medications, transportation, nutrition, and other ancillary needs during the organ transplant experience.

The success of Leading Ladies is largely due to the fabulous array of talent that is provided through Don Casino Productions, Inc., the booking agency owned by Leading Ladies Founder, Candi Casino.

This day was no exception. Entertainer Jimmy Chapel, superbly met the energy of the room with his crisp banter and powerful renditions of song favorites, including the well-loved tunes of Neil Diamond, Tom Jones, and his dynamic “G-d Bless the USA”, coupled with “Coming to America”; and a well deserved standing ovation!

The next event for Leading Ladies will be a star-studded revue directed by Nancy Sutton in October. Kudos to everyone who participated in this day of red, white, and blue. It was a “Stars and Stripes” filled with lots of caring. G-d Bless the Troops, the Veterans, the Patients whom we assist, and G-d Bless America !!

While exploring the house, they discover a wardrobe containing a magical forest that transports them to the land called Narnia, a land of talking animals and mythical creatures that the witch has ruled for 100 years in very cold winter. The youngest child Lucy, visits Narnia three times, through the wardrobe kept in a spare room. During a visit, she

meets Mr. Tumnus, a faun, who eventually tells her he is going to betray her to the witch.

However after getting to know a human being, he cannot obey the witch’s orders. All four children are together on her third visit trying to discover ways to rescue the Narnians, by opening the gate to the Witch’s castle, crush some of her army, and save their own lives. That’s where the action begins. Lots of excitement and adventure follow.

Hallandale Beach Chiropractor Attends 22nd Annual ICA Fitness Conference With Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Falls Church, VA: Dr. Christopher DiCarlo of Hallandale Beach, Florida was among a select group of doctors of chiropractic from around the world invited to participate in the 22nd Annual ICA Symposium on Natural Fitness held February 27 - March 1, 2014 in Columbus, Ohio. Held annually in conjunction with the Arnold Schwarzenegger Sports Festival, this unique event again welcomed hundreds of enthusiastic doctors of chiropractic, students, and friends from around the world. Sponsored by the Council on Fitness and Sports Health Science of the International Chiropractors Association, this event celebrated its 22nd anniversary in 2014.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger again highlighted the 2014 ICA chiropractic conference with his personal appearance and keynote presentation before the packed Symposium audience. A strong advocate of chiropractic care for people of all ages, Governor Schwarzenegger shared his thoughts about the importance of chiropractic care and his appreciation of its ability to help people on many levels, stressing the importance of chiropractic as a significant means of prevention and commending its preventive function as a key component of all health care programs, both public and private. Governor Schwarzenegger spoke about his observations and experiences with chiropractic’s value from the podium, telling the audience: “This is why it is so important to have you as our partners, because your whole goal is to reach out and to help people get healthier. “Not only is this the great thing about chiropractic - not only when someone has an injury or a problem, they come to the chiropractor.

That’s not the only thing you do; you give them advice on how not to get injured and how they got sick in the first place - this is why you are so good for prevention also.”

Mr. Schwarzenegger also spoke about his own personal experience with chiropractic, recognizing the care he and his family received throughout the years and introducing fellow champion and workout partner,

as well as his personal Chiropractor, Dr. Franco Columbu, relating to his success in bodybuilding and also his ability to maintain such a rigorous personal and professional schedule. He invited Dr. Columbu to the podium to speak, who noted: “I really want to say that nothing gives you more than the chiropractic profession when it comes to health, longevity and knowing what to do not only for yourself, but also for your friends. You gain it in health and longevity, it’s so great when we can help people more than any other health profession.”

Commenting on the importance of chiropractic’s role in healthy living, prevention, and performance enhancement, Arnold introduced “True Blood” star Joe Manganiello who appears with him in the movie “Sabotage”; he shared how his positive experiences with chiropractic included his ability to balance his body, sustain intensely focused workouts and prevent injury plus support advanced performance enhancement.

Arnold then awarded the ICA Fitness Council Athlete of the Year Award to IFBB Fitness Olympia and WBFF World Pro Figure Champion Monica Brant, presenting her with an engraved crystal column.

The ICA Natural Fitness Symposium focuses on the close relationship between fitness and health, and brings together the worlds of athletic competition, exercise and fitness, and chiropractic science to highlight the value of natural health through exercise. Through clinical presentations and lectures combined with practical demonstrations, the Symposium provides the latest information available, including current research and breakthroughs in training strategies, on the development of optimum performance in sports and training on injury prevention in the context of chiropractic care.

“Just because you read it in the paper doesn’t mean you should change your eating habits overnight, because that’s not the way we in science typically operate,” explained Dr. Michael Doyle, director of the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia.

Steps for quality research These are the three main steps for conducting thorough research. Along with being peer reviewed and published, research that fits within these categories is recognized as the gold standard.

1. Transparency: Reliable research includes communication that’s honest, open and easy to understand.

2. Reproducibility: Different scientific researchers participate in studies that come to the same conclusion.

3. Meta-Analysis: There is an ability to contrast and combine results from different studies to look for differences or agreement.

If these three steps cannot be successfully completed, testing will continue until multiple scientists determine the same result.

Unfortunately this kind of process promises no immediate results. This is yet another reason why it’s important to take those in-yourface nutritional studies with a grain of salt until further studies are completed.

Further review Once a study successfully meets the steps of transparency and reproducibility, the research is turned over to scientists who were not involved in the initial research for an independent evaluation. These scientists perform a meta-analysis, contrasting and combining results from different studies and looking for differences or agreement. Only after going through this process can research be considered scientifically verified.

Make Summer Sizzle with Grilled Kabobs With fresh, flavorful recipes featuring onions (Family Features) Kabobs are a simple way to enjoy many of your favorite fresh flavors in a single meal. With their easy preparation and quick cooking time, kabobs make a perfect weeknight meal when served over rice along with a crisp salad.

The potential combinations of meat, vegetables and fruit on a kabob are nearly endless. Spring/ summer varieties of onions are especially wellsuited for kabobs. Their flavor ranges from sweet and mild to slightly pungent. Easily identifiable by their tissue thin skin, spring/summer onions are higher in water content, which gives them a tender crisp texture when grilled.

KITCHEN TIPS For the best results, follow these tips from the National Onion Association: 1. Chill onions at least 30 minutes before cutting, and use a sharp knife to reduce tearing. 2. Soak onions in ice water overnight to dampen their flavor, yet keep their crisp, juicy texture. 3. Cut onions can be refrigerated up to 7 days in sealed containers.

Simple and satisfying Before you begin experimenting with kabob combinations of your own, try this deliciously simple recipe, which melds chicken and shrimp with two colors of onion, bell pepper and mango for a sweet and savory main dish.

Remember to cut ingredients into uniform pieces and leave space between each piece to ensure your kabobs cook evenly and thoroughly.

Sweet ’n Savory Teriyaki Kabobs Makes 4 to 6 servings • 3/4 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-1/2 to 2-inch cubes • 18 medium shrimp, shelled and deveined (1/2 to 3/4 pound) • 1/2 cup olive oil • 1/2 cup prepared mango chutney, chopped if coarse • 1/2 cup bottled teriyaki sauce

• 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar • 18 large bamboo or metal skewers (about 12 inches long) • 1 medium yellow onion, cut into 1/2-inch wedges • 1 medium red onion, cut into 1/2-inch wedges • 2 firm, ripe mangos, peeled, pitted and cut into large cubes • 1 large green bell pepper, halved, trimmed, seeded and cubed • Nonstick cooking spray, as needed • Ginger Mango Dipping Sauce (recipe follows) Place chicken and shrimp in shallow glass pan or large re-sealable plastic bag. For marinade, combine oil, chutney, teriyaki sauce and vinegar in small bowl with lid. Pour half of marinade mixture over chicken and shrimp. Cover or seal and marinate in refrigerator at least 3 hours, preferably overnight. Cover and refrigerate remaining marinade for basting.

If using bamboo skewers, soak in water at least l hour before using.

To prepare kabobs: Drain and discard marinade from meat. Thread chicken, yellow and red onion, mango, green pepper and shrimp alternately onto skewers. Be sure to keep enough room at one end of each skewer for a “handle.”

Coat grill grate with nonstick cooking spray.

Place skewers over medium coals, and grill for 12 to 15 minutes or until meat is done and vegetables are tender. Brush often with reserved marinade and turn skewers until cooked through. If needed, use spatula to gently loosen skewers before turning as they may stick.

Arrange skewers on a platter and serve with Ginger Mango Dipping Sauce.

Ginger Mango Dipping Sauce Makes about 1 cup • l mango, halved, pitted and scooped out of skin (about 1 cup) • 1/4 cup frozen orange juice concentrate • 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger root (or 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger) Combine ingredients in electric blender and puree until smooth.

Alternate preparations: Omit shrimp and use 1 1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast, cutting into 36 cubes and using 2 per skewer.

Instead of grilling, place kabobs in broiler pan coated with nonstick cooking spray and broil 3 inches from heat about 10 to 15 minutes or until done, basting and turning as needed.
