SEEING IS BELIEVING • When Thomas Angelucci faced cataract surgery, Dr. Stanley Braverman was his only choice Guest Palaces are located in larger cities. They are similar to our American hotels but solely owned and operated by the Government. They are for dignitaries and other guests of the Kingdom. When you are there you are a guest of the King.

Saudi Arabia has many ‘western’ influences By Mayor Joy Cooper Before continuing on my report of Saudi Arabia I want to share some great news from our City’s Department of Public Works and a new pilot program approved by the Commission. Currently the city provides a fixed schedule for bulk and yard waste pick up for single family homes and multi- family units of 10 or less. When pick up is scheduled for the quadrant resident place items at the curb where it stays until the day of pick up. Quite often the bulk items will stay for multiple days until the

sweep. This creates an unsightly mess and it also encourages illegal dumping. Living in the city for over 23 years, I have observed that many homes do not use the service at all. Some use it occasionally. Others simply take advantage of the free on call service. Rental units seem to use the service more frequently. Last year I had asked staff to look into an on demand system and a few months ago Vice Mayor Alex Lewy also asked about the service. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– COOPER, Page 4A

Hollywood resident Thomas Angelucci had worn contact lenses for most of his life. But when his vision began to deteriorate rapidly, he became alarmed. “I was having a terrible time wearing my contacts, and it seemed as if my prescription was changing every month,” he recalls. “And I even needed to wear reading glasses over my contacts.” As his vision loss quickly progressed, activities that had been routine became difficult or impossible. “I like to walk my dog at night,” he says. “But my vision had become so poor I had trouble seeing when people were coming toward me. And I could barely see well

enough to drive at night.” Mr. Angelucci paid a visit to his primary physician, who sent him to an eye specialist. “He told me I had cataracts, but they weren’t that bad and I should wait to do anything about them. But I knew they were bad, and they should be taken care of.” Then Mr. Angelucci’s neighbor told him about –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BRAVERMAN, Page 3A

By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Cathy Morales of North Miami Beach thought she would have to wait in long lines to make some of her holiday purchases last Saturday. She was surprised. Even though she had a list and knew what she wanted to buy, the Aventura Mall is usually a "no-fly zone" this time of year. Parking spots are at a premium and patients are wearing thin. What Morales and others have found this Christmas season has that the rush we have watched in the past is been replaced by those last minute shoppers who got lucky this year. "This is amazing," Morales said. "I thought an hour wait

HALLANDALE BEACH More than 125 children were treated to a shopping spree at Wal-Mart Saturday at the annual Hallandale Beach Shop with a Cop Christmas event. The children and youths were each given gift cards for $75 or $100 and accompanied on the shopping spree by police. For more on this great event. 1D.

While many view the slower rush before Christmas as as sign that this has been a slower season, others point to the more creative ways that businesses worked this year.

and long lines would greet us today. I was wrong. This is just like any other shopping day." While many retailers, especially locally, had been planning for a better financial holiday season, found that things were a little different this year. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– SHOPPING, Page 5A
