*New!* On the Trail of the Hudson River School
There is nothing quite like admiring a painting by Thomas Cole or Sanford Gifford up-close: standing in front of the gilded-frame canvas in a gallery or museum, admiring the exquisite “landscape.” In this class, students will get to step into the actual place that inspired these famous 19th century works of art. Students will visit a few of the actual sites depicted by the artists in their paintings, all of which are still immediately recognizable, and discuss the difference between the experience of a place and the “transformation” of experience into a
work of art. This is a two-session, two-day course, held over the course of one weekend. The first class is a lecture and will be held at Mountain Top Library, and the second will be a guided hike conducted on-site in the vicinity of North Lake, the “birthplace of the Hudson River School.” The hike on the second day is about six miles of relatively easy hiking (no steep inclines). Firsttime hikers with no experience may find this strenuous. Please note that students do have the option of signing up for just the lecture portion. INSTRUCTOR: John P. O’Grady
