Elsewhere we have 4 fabulous features this month, including the insightful ‘I’m a Celeb… Get me into Rehab’ where we reveal brave Michelle Heaton’s recent struggles with alcoholism and her rocky road to recovery… her husband was told by medical professionals she would be lucky to survive. How she has turned her life around in a mere 20 weeks is amazing and her story is truly inspiring. As are the other 10 high profile celebs, including Bradley Cooper and Billy Joel, whose stories are told. We also reveal how to stay sane this Half Term (yes, it’s here already!) SFL – the latest aesthetic treatment making headlines and Iggy Azalea discussing how being a mother and juggling her career, has finally made her complete. If a little tired (!) but she wouldn’t have it any other way - bringing up her son Onyx as a single mother and positive role model. If all this seems a little deep, be sure to have a laugh at ‘The Best of Snapchat BOTW’ on page 108 and check out your monthly horoscopes too. Astro Mumma is spot on. For tech news ‘For Him’ this month covers space travel and the iPhone 13 while ‘For Her’ is going all fashionista and beauty on us with cut-out fashion, coloured coats and Black Doll facials uncovered. everyone’s talking about... JENNIFER & BEN REUNITE Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are back together officially after 18 years apart. The couple were first seen rekindling their romance on the red carpet at The Venice International Film Festival on September 10th this year and Ben, 49, was supporting his girlfriend at her recent Central Park New York concert, leaving hand in hand to go to an after party. On stage Jen, 52, wowed fans with her plethora of hits including “Ain’t it Funny” & “Jenny From The Block” and even made a special mention to love gushing, “We can do anything with love. Love makes miracles, trust me. I guess you could say, I don’t know, I got love on the brain. Have love on my mind lately. I don’t know what it is.”
The pair originally dated between 2002 and 2004 but split due to heavy work schedules and Jen’s touring. Ben has always referred to Jennifer as “the one that got away!” Not anymore by the sounds of it. The couple have been away on holiday with their kids (Jennifer has twins with her ex, Marc Anthony, and Ben has three children with his ex, Jennifer Garner). Ben is said to be smitten, considering proposing to Jen already according to pals.
MOLLY MAE URGES FANS TO GET CHECKED OUT Love Island star Molly Mae Hague has been in hospital having a lump removed from her breast and has urged fans to get checked out. Luckily for the star the lump was benign but posting to her 6.1 million fans she described the experience as “petrifying, shocking and scary.” Urging fans to be vigilant she posted on Instagram Stories a picture of her in hospital saying, “People check your bodies!”

NEWS TOM CRUISE ON SET DATING DISASTER It’s an on-set disaster for Tom Cruise during filming “Mission Impossible 7” as he has had the unfortunate disaster of breaking up with his British co-star Hayley Atwell before filming wrapped up. The couple had been dating since December 2020 and everything had seemed blissful. Tom, 59, who was 20 years older than Atwell, 39, had been regularly seen out together including dinner dates in London and at Wimbledon this summer. It was the first official romance for the “Top Gun” actor since his 2012 divorce from actress Katie Holmes. Cruise and Atwell decided to call it a day - for unknown reasons this week (September 27th). According to producers, it was an amicable split, so they are more than happy to work together to finish the 7th instalment of the action franchise. “It is a shame,” insiders have said as Cruise had indicated he would move to London to live near “Captain America” actress Atwell and the on-screen chemistry between the two stars was described as “electrifying” over the past 8 months of filming. See if you can notice the on-scene chemistry go from “hot to not” by the end of the film?!
MICHELLE HEATON SHOCKS FANS
SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR RAPE CLAIMS Singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor has recalled how she was horrifically raped aged 17 by a then 29-year-old musician backstage at a concert. The ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ singer has spoken out about the attack to warn other young girls to be vigilant. After keeping the incident secret for 25 years, Sophie felt compelled to speak out as it has affected her so badly. I wasn’t pinned down and raped by force but I clearly said, “No” and didn’t want this to happen. She was ignored and has felt ashamed and withdrawn in most of her relationships because of this, she claims. The singer, daughter to “Blue Peter” presenter Janet Ellis and TV producer Robin Bextor, is married and has five sons with her husband Richard Jones. She doesn’t want to name and shame her attacker but also insists she feels old and wise enough to retell her story to help others.
Social media has gone into overdrive this month with the shocking pictures posted by former Liberty X singer Michelle Heaton showing her puffy face and bloodshot eyes at the height of her alcohol addiction a mere 20 weeks ago. Michelle posted two pictures of herself ‘before and after’ saying: “This picture is not to shock, it was my reality! Ruined – immune system was shutting down. The second is me today – Saved – strong, happy, healthy.” Luckily for the star she has overcome her demons and after a stint in rehab she is now 20 weeks sober. She felt compelled to speak out about the depths of her addiction as part of National Sober Day and National Recovery Month to help others. Michelle went on to say, “Encouragement of one day fuels more support and awareness, leading to long term sobriety. That’s something worth celebrating! The opposite of addiction is a connection. Recognising this provides a model for future generations who will be my picture one! And then the second picture demonstrates how to enjoy life alcohol-free, the day will embolden future generations to say no to alcohol.” Read our feature on Celebs in Rehab on page 52.

The much-anticipated iPhone 13 (& the Mini, Pro and Pro Max) hit stores last week and unlike its predecessor is getting rave reviews. This is mainly because Apple has been listening to its customers; vastly improving the battery life, camera and screens. Apple claims the iPhone 13 Mini can now last for 13 hours when streaming a video, while the iPhone 13 can go for 15 hours. Then there’s a big leap up to 20 hours of streaming battery life for the Pro while the Pro Max promises to go for a whopping 25 hours. And you’ve got even better cameras. There are new sensors on both of the rear cameras and there is a new cinematic mode for shallow focus videos. On the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models (which have been getting 70% more hits on searches!) the triple 12-megapixel set-up includes a primary sensor with a large f/1.5 aperture, a 77mm telephoto lens and an ultra-wide option with a 120-degree field of view. Night mode is now supported on all three of the cameras, so you don’t have to compromise on wide-angle or close-up shots in low light. The iPhone 13 also comes with a faster A15 Bionic Chip to increase load times of pages and if you are a fan of filters, you

can now shoot in your signature mode – Standard, Vibrant, Rich Contrast, Warm or Cool – to avoid having to edit later. The Super Retina XDR screens are brighter and there are more 5G bands for great 5G Coverage. While at a glance you’d find it hard to differentiate the 13 from the 12 in terms of design as it has the same flat edges are with an almost identical bezel, the Pro models have a glossy rather than a matte glass back, making it more lightweight. The iPhone 13 and 13 Mini come in 5 colours: Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight and Red while the Pro and Pro Max come in 4 colours: Graphite, Gold, Silver and the all-new Sierra Blue. You can get the iPhone 13 for £32.34 a month for 24 months or £779 before trade-in, and iPhone 13 Mini for £28.29 a month for 24 months or £679 before trade-in at the Apple Store App or Apple Store locations. Following hot on the heels of Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos’ recent galactic trips, Elon Musk’s Space X has just completed a historic mission – sending 4 ordinary people to space. The four crew members were the first civilians to fly a completely private orbital space mission, unaccompanied by professional astronauts. They consisted of a cancer survivor, an engineer, a physician and a geology professor! Billionaire Jared Isaacman paid an undisclosed sum for the trip which allowed the team to orbit for three days around Earth. The team called Inspiration 4 landed safely in the Atlantic Ocean near to Florida on September 18th and raised $200 million for St Jude’s Cancer Research Facility. Musk was believed to have donated $50m to the fundraising efforts. This mission was considered paramount to future space travel for citizens, with Space X, Virgin Galactic and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin paving the way for this so called “space tourism.” It doesn’t come cheap though. Virgin Galactic are currently selling commercial flights to space at $450,000 while Blue Origin are expecting to sell tickets for between $200,000 and $300,000. WHAT'S TRENDING...
Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie and Kim Kardashian are all fans of the ‘Black Doll Facial’ otherwise known as the Carbon Laser or Hollywood Facial. These facials (the same btw - but have been given numerous nicknames!) are quick and easy to do and can easily be done in a lunch hour with no downtime, swelling or redness so patients can continue their normal daily routines after having. The facial involves coating the face with carbon nano particles, hence the nickname “Black Doll,” due to the appearance of the black carbon on the skin. The medically approved laser then aids the particles to destroy epidermal keratinocytes and bring out dirt deep in the pores of the skin. The heat from the laser also helps the carbon powder absorb into the skin causing a
regeneration of cells by helping growth of collagen and the elastic elements of skin reproduction. It is pain free although users may feel a twang from the laser on sensitive areas like such as around the lips or nasal folds. This has been likened to a ping of an elastic band. It is important to note that most patients do not feel pain or discomfort during the procedure. Further good news is, the treatment has multiple benefits of

reducing lines and wrinkles, removing blackheads and acne and can even lighten or reduce the effects of dark spots, age spots and freckles. The elasticity and moisturising effects also give a much more glowing and healthy- looking complexion. Advocates of this facial claim that after 1 session they notice a huge difference and after 4 sessions some report the facial easily takes 10 years off their appearance… another reason why it has also been known to be called, the Non-Surgical Facelift. Whatever you want to call it (!) Surrey Rocks recommends going to a qualified practitioner for any aesthetic procedures as there are a lot of “rogue traders” out there. Our feature next month will highlight some of these atrocities. Remember to do your due diligence as well, it’s your face and you don’t want to take any risks. Luckily, if you want to go for a Carbon Laser Facial then there are two great Surrey businesses we can whole heartedly recommend, both with 5 Star Ratings: S w i n l e y Laser in W indlesham and Icon Style Beauty in Cobham.

Italian designer Valentino has just released a limitededition hoodie with their famous V Logo and “Vaccinated” emblazoned across the front, in a bid to get more shoppers to get the jab. The Italian powerhouse has also revealed that profits from the proceeds will be entirely donated to UNICEF. The sweatshirt has already sparked interest from celebs with Lada Gaga donning one and posting a video to her 49.1m Instagram fans and actress Zoey Deutch. Pierpaolo Piccioli, Valentino’s creative director, said: “Getting vaccinated is not a choice. It’s civil liability.” We don’t think Nicki Minaj would agree!

RECIPE HARISSA CHICKEN WITH SAFFRON RICE
INGREDIENTS
A lighter and more interesting alternative to a Sunday roast. Sinfully easy to make but impressive to your guests, it also makes for a brilliant dinner party dish as the oven and stove do all the hard work for you. Taken from The Milly Cookbook, the celebrity chef cookbook that offers healthy, nourishing and exciting dishes that you and your body will love.
• 1 free range organic chicken • 1 jar of harissa paste (available at all major supermarkets) • 1 mug full of brown rice • 2 mugs full of chicken or vegetable stock • A pinch of saffron • Lemon cut into discs • Parsley to serve • Salt & pepper to garnish
METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180C. 2. Place your chicken on a tray and brush harissa paste all over it until completely covered. Slash the thighs with a sharp knife down to the bone (this helps the brown meat cook in the same time as the white). Sprinkle with salt and pop in the oven for as long as the packaging says (based on weight and size). 3. Twenty minutes before the chicken has finished cooking, get a saucepan and pour in your mug of rice. One mug feeds 4 people, and for every mug of rice you want double the liquid this is called the absorption method. So for 1 mug of rice, you want to add 2 mugs of stock. 4. Throw in the saffron, season with a little salt and pepper and bring to the boil. 5. Once boiling, turn down to a simmer, add a dash of extra virgin olive oil and cover with a lid. After 15 minutes, check the rice, if it needs a few more minutes you have time. 6. Take the chicken out to rest for 5 minutes and when the rice is cooked and has absorbed all of the water place it on a platter with the chicken. 7. Serve with slices of lemon and a sprinkle of parsley and let everyone help themselves.
WINE MATCH With spicy foods like Harissa – tannins in wines can be unpleasant so the important thing here is not to try and overpower the chicken dish with a strong wine. The good news is there is a large selection of both red and white wines that go perfectly with this dish. For reds, try a lighter, fruitier type of wine with low tannins such as a Beaujolais or a Rhone. Away from France, a South African or Lebanese Pinot Noir would match well too. For white wine - fruity or even slightly sweeter wines will go well – a Reisling or a bright, unoaked Spanish white would be a great choice. Finally, for non-wine drinkers consider a light ale.

NO TIME TO DIE
COLDPLAY – MUSIC OF THE SPHERES
THE JUDGE’S LIST – JOHN GRISHAM
Coldplay are back this month with their ninth studio album entitled Music of the Spheres scheduled for release on October 15th. The 12-track album is slightly different to their usual offerings in that Max Martin (the Swedish producer behind hits for The Weeknd including Blinding Lights and Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl) has taken the group on a journey to outerspace. There are more electro-style beats and songs include My Universe, Higher Power and quite simply the Ringed Planet Emoji. If it worked for Prince when he changed his name to a symbol it can work for Coldplay! The last song on the new album Coloratura was released back in July and has already proved a hit for the London group, getting tonnes of radio station airplay and rave reviews. When the group dropped news of their new album earlier this year, they posted a note saying, “Everyone is an alien somewhere.” Interesting. All eight of Coldplay’s previous studio albums have peaked at Number 1 on the UK Official Albums Chart – let’s see if they can make it an intergalactic number 9 hit. And more good news from the Coldplay boys. They have recently lifted their self-imposed touring ban after striking a deal with BMW to travel in a carbon neutral way thanks to specially produced electric trucks and vehicles. Expect a UK album tour next year Coldplay fans.
America’s favourite storyteller, John Grisham is releasing another thrilling book this month entitled The Judge’s List. It follows investigator Lacy Stoltz on the trail of a serial killer while at the same time closing in on a shocking suspect in the murder case – a sitting judge. As an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct, Stoltz sees plenty of corruption among the men and women elected to the bench. In John Grisham’s previous novel, The Whistler, Stoltz took on a crime syndicate that was paying millions to a crooked judge. Now, in The Judge’s List, the crimes are getting even worse. In Random House’s promotional feature article for the book, the publishing house peaks interest by saying, “The man hiding behind the black robe is not taking bribes - but he may be taking lives. The Judge’s List - you don’t want to be on it.” Grisham is a former lawyer and was born in Arkansas famously writing his first novel A Time To Kill over 3 years. Since then he has written 36 novels including The Firm and The Pelican Brief and had 28 number one bestselling novels, selling over 300 million books, making him the number one fictional writer in the world. Out on October 19th, The Judge’s List is one of the most anticipated reads of 2021 that won’t disappoint.
Bond is back. The long-awaited 25th installment has finally been given a worldwide release date of October 8th from the original date of November 2019 due to on-set injuries, original director Danny Boyle dropping out and then of course the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent cinema closures. It is due for its UK release on September 30th. It has definitely been worth waiting for. Daniel Craig’s era of Bond may be coming to a close - but this film proves he will go out with a bang. The film has a stellar line-up of British actors including Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris and Bohemiam Rhapsody’s Rami Malek. The story starts with a down and out Bond, who has been out of the spy game for 5 years, living in Jamaica. When his CIA buddy Felix asks for his help to track down a missing scientist, Bond and his assortment of friends are led on a trail to hunt down a mysterious villain who is in charge of a dangerous new technology that threatens the world. Shot in Italy, Norway, the Faroe Islands, London and Jamaica with Fleabag sensation Phoebe WallerBridge among the writing team, you can expect a seriously cool script and the usual injection of car chases, explosions and stunt scenes that make’s Bond’s 007 one of the most popular franchises in the world.

BABY BORIS
(& HIS ‘YUMMY COBHAM MUMMY’ TATIANA)
30 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 02
D
avid Barabash (aka Baby Boris) made headlines in hundreds of national newspapers across the world when he was born on March 1st with a full head of long blonde hair like our charismatic Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. We took time out to catch up with this local Surrey celebrity and his glamorous mummy to find out about the most adorable internet sensation and what it’s been like for the family on their new-found fame. WHEN DAVID WAS FIRST BORN WITH LONG BLONDE HAIR WERE YOU SURPRISED? Of course! Not only by his appearance but also where it had come from! There was no one in my family with the blonde gene so I asked my husband if he had anyone – he couldn’t remember as well. Three days later his mother mentioned that she is actually a natural blonde!
HOW DID THE STORY GET PICKED UP SO QUICKLY BY THE NATIONALS? It was unexpected, to be fair. I posted David’s photos on the Facebook group named “Parents of child-models” and asked which agencies to apply to. We got more than 150 comments and likes in few days. Then we were spotted by the journalist who works for one of the news agencies. She was so impressed by David’s look and asked me to give her an interview. We did it by phone and then she sent the script with our photos to national papers where it was picked up by most of them. I remember the first one: it was online Daily Mail, then Metro, and the next day – 5
WHEN DID YOU FIRST NOTICE THE RESEMBLANCE TO THE PM? We started to make a joke of it immediately. His hair was very white, almost ash blonde. I stayed in Kingston Hospital for few more days and literally every new midwife said the same: “Look at this hair! I’ve never seen blonde babies with that hair, it’s miniBoris Johnson”. My husband even wanted to name him Boris, but I said that’s too much as he is such a unique personality that he deserved to be treated as himself.

print newspapers across the UK. So, we woke up famous. After that we were invited to This Morning – and our friends started to call us with: “Oh my god, we’ve just seen you on TV!” DO YOU GET STOPPED IN THE STREET A LOT? Yes. Even more than before now. I thought that when David was a bit older people will stop noticing. But even today everywhere we go, people stop us with lots of people asking to take a picture with David. HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN YOU WERE GETTING REPORTED ON FROM AS FAR AFIELD AS AUSTRALIA & JAPAN? After 3 days, when the main hype calmed down a bit, I decided to do some research. I have friends all over the world and they started to send me articles in Spanish, French and German. I decided to translate “Baby Boris” in different languages and Google it. I was shocked! I found articles in every language - all over Europe, Asia, America – everywhere! It was crazy. After that our lives changed forever and I even didn’t name Cobham in interviews, just Surrey. To keep things a little calmer we used to put a hat on David during walks. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO APPEAR ON ITV’S THIS MORNING? Everything happened so fast that we didn’t have time to analyse it. I don’t watch TV much anyway, so for me it wasn’t that big a thing. My task was to get my husband on the shows too so everyone knew who David’s father’s was! I think it’s important to have a father figure in place so we were able to avoid any controversial comments. I think we successfully did it. WERE HOLLY & PHIL AS LOVELY AS EVERYONE MAKES OUT? Yes, they were amazing! But the funniest thing is that after the show I realised that when I was pregnant with David, I was actually reading Holly’s book about babies. So literally, I managed David based on her advice! But as I came to London 5 years ago and didn’t watch TV

much – I didn’t know that the person from the book was the person from TV show we were on, so I didn’t mention it! WHAT OTHER TV SHOWS OR APPEARANCES HAS DAVID DONE? Straight after This Morning we were invited to The National Morning Show in Ukraine where we repeated almost the same interview in an hour. The next day, we were invited by The Red, which talks about worldwide famous celebrities. It covers Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It was another last-minute interview as well, so we had to make videos of David and film our total interview in 30 mins. All this while in a rush that morning I washed my hair with shower gel in a rush so I don’t think I looked that great! I have tried to gather all the media in David’s Instagram account, so it will be in one place for him when he’s older. WHAT IS THE BEST THING TO COME OUT OF THIS AMAZING COMPARISON? That a lot of people in the world see David as a future Prime Minister and they already love him. What better start to a political career for a young man! Of course, maybe he will be a successful Chelsea football player (his father’s dream) but he has plenty of options now!
recently and started to support the female Ukrainian business community here in London. The Mrs Ukraine contest will be held on the 2nd March 2022 – wish me luck!
HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF ENTERING DAVID INTO MODELLING? Yes, even without the comparison with Boris – he is a beautiful boy with a positive attitude, who adores the camera! He loves to be surrounded by people and is always smiling. WE DISCOVERED YOU ARE ALSO A BIT OF A CELEB YOURSELF WINNING SEVERAL BEAUTY COMPETITIONS? When I was 20 – I won a beauty contest in Moscow and got a brand new car as a main gift. It was my first step into the beauty and fashion industry where I stayed for many years, working as a model, actress, stylist and now as a brand developer. What can I say… it’s an amazing feeling to have a crown on the top of your head. Hopefully, I will feel it again soon! YES WE HEAR YOU ARE ENTERING MRS UKRAINE – TELL US MORE? Yes, I am currently preparing for Mrs Ukraine International 2022. It’s a big event in Ukraine with a lot of celebrities and respected people. It is a great reason for me to finally dive into social activity again after lockdown, specifically into the charity sector. Also, it’s a great chance to make a positive British-Ukrainian cultural exchange. For example, I organised the first Charity Afternoon Tea in Kyiv
GOOD LUCK. NOT THAT YOU NEED IT! YOU ALSO OWN OWN THE BRAND SCAN. WHAT CAN YOU OFFER ANY LOCAL SURREY BUSINESESS READING THIS? As a luxury brand management expert, I scan every case using the luxury strategy. I don’t have much time now to take a lot of cases at the same time, as I also develop our family construction business Daniel’s Contractors & Development, but I provide my clients with the consultancy, they can also order branding, rebranding or strategy; which includes marketing and PR advice. Then I can create a team for a business to move things forward. It doesn’t come cheap though! WE ALSO HEAR YOUR HUSBAND IS LAUNCHING HIS LONDON PROPERTY BUSINESS DANIEL’S CONTRACTORS IN SURREY – HOW IS IT ALL GOING? My husband has 20 years’ experience in the construction sector. And currently we are moving to a new company Daniel’s Contractors & Development as we want to focus more on the development side of business. Currently we have started projects for 3 houses, but also working on the private village idea with up to 50 houses. It is my personal dream and hopefully we will find suitable land for its realisation. AND FINALLY, AS A SURREY RESIDENT, WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT LIVING HERE? We have a lake and forest 1 minute walk from our house. It’s an amazing place to raise kids. Also, Cobham and Surrey in general are pretty fancy! You know The Ivy Brasserie would never open a restaurant in an average village. We moved here in the middle of lockdown, so we just enjoyed nature for the first 6 months! I’m looking forward to discovering all the cool places which Surrey Rocks recommends and dreaming to meet another Cobham resident actor - Antonio Banderas - at our local Waitrose!

GGY AZALEA – MUM’S THE WORD N
ever one to shy away from controversy, singer Iggy Azalea, mum to 16-month-old son Onyx, has spoken out about juggling her work and parental responsibilities openly saying she finally feels; “super fulfilled.” Iggy Azalea, 31, has received major column inches this month advocating mums having a career as well as caring for their kids. This year already, Iggy has released an album, is currently supporting Pit Bull on tour in the US, has launched her make-up line Totally Plastic and is also pursuing a modelling career. “It makes me feel so much more fulfilled to be able to accomplish all of these tasks simultaneously,” she said, “It’s really difficult, but it makes it so satisfying.“ Iggy says she loves spending time with her son and adores being a mum but feels it is important for women not to give up their careers, despite it being hard work. She admits it is difficult to juggle - especially as she has been surviving some nights on just three hours sleep. “It can be stressful. My son and I love to spend time together, so he stays up until 7 o’clock at night. I go to sleep at 4.30am some nights and he gets up at 7.15am!” Her routine has caused her to gain a new-found respect for working mums saying her life is a “never ending struggle” but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s great to know that the projects that I am involved in are

going to be something that my son will see and say, ‘My mum was super cool. Look at what she did!’” It’s all about being a good role model and having a good work ethic to show your kids. It’s been a tough year for Iggy romantically too. She has had to go through a very public break-up with her rapper ex-boyfriend, Playboi Carti, and father of Onyx which has been played out in the media. Iggy’s frustrations with his lack of effort and commitment to Onyx has seen her take to social media to vent her frustrations. She accused Carti of not spending Christmas Day with Onyx just months after they split. “Too bad you got an album out but can’t even come to Christmas with your own son,” Iggy tweeted. “And I was gonna keep it cute and let you live but nah, Not after I just peeped that trifling sh-t. TRIFLING!” Before Carti, Iggy was engaged to Los Angeles Lakers star Nick Young but called off their engagement in 2016 due to his infidelity when a video surfaced of him talking about other women and then she actually discovered him cheating on CCTV footage. She said at the time: "I broke up with Nick because I found out he
had brought other women into our home while I was away and caught them on security footage. I feel like I don´t even know who the hell it is I´ve been loving all this time.” Iggy has said she is not actively looking for a boyfriend at the moment but hasn’t ruled it out if the right guy comes along. Judging by her latest Pit Bull tour pics with her sensational nipped in waist and hotpants she won’t be short of offers. Australian-born Iggy has always been considered a ballsy girl, having dropped out of school at 16 to travel to America in the hope of cracking the music industry – a dream that very few actually get to live out. But Iggy has noticeable talents; being able to sing, rap and write her own music and definitely made an impression on the notoriously tough record industry. She spent several years making her dream a reality, mixing with top producers and rappers. Her debut studio album, “The New Classic” peaked among the top five of several charts worldwide in 2014 and topping the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums making her the first non-American female rapper to reach the top of the charts. An amazing accolade for a then 23-year-old musician. The album was preceded by her debut single "Work", and generated the US Billboard Hot 100 chart topping single "Fancy", which made Iggy the fourth female rapper in the history to reach number one,
claiming the longest-leading reign with seven consecutive weeks. Additionally, she was featured on Ariana Grande's single "Problem", which peaked at number two while "Fancy" was number one. She joined The Beatles as the only act to rank at numbers one and two simultaneously with two Hot 100 entries. She also went on to achieve three top ten hits simultaneously with the aforementioned songs along with the fifth single from the album, "Black Widow", later that year. Azalea's second studio album “Digital Distortion” with its lead single, "Team" was a major hit for her. On August 13 this year her third studio album “The End Of An Era” dropped with rave reviews making it to number 9 in the charts. The catchy lyrics and tracks were a tribute to the end of her 20’s and served as a “time capsule of that decade of her life,” with tracks like “Sip It” from Tyga and even a collaboration with Posh Spice. Iggy has now said she is taking a break from recording for a couple of years to “pursue other interests” but
indicated she will be back after getting more life experience. Whatever happens to Iggy now you can be sure the outspoken singer will stay true to herself. She regularly pipes up with refreshing comments in the media and has even advocated more people actually admitting to having plastic surgery following her breast augmentation and rhinoplasty operations in 2015. “I think, people should be more accepting of the fact that both famous and non-famous women are having cosmetic procedures. That’s just the reality. And I think more people need to admit that shit so it doesn’t have to be so taboo - because we’re all doing it anyway!” Iggy claimed, again, never one to shy away from controversy! And this is another reason why her fans love her - because she is so candidly open and honest about her life.

I’M A CELEBRIT S
ocial media has gone into overdrive this month with the shocking pictures posted by former Liberty X singer Michelle Heaton showing her puffy face and bloodshot eyes at the height of her alcohol addiction a mere 20 weeks ago. Michelle posted two pictures of herself ‘before and after’ saying: “This picture is not to shock, it was my reality! Ruined – immune system was shutting down. The second is me today – Saved – strong, happy, healthy.” Luckily for the star, who rose to fame in 2001 after winning a spot in reality TV made band Liberty X, she has overcome her demons and after a stint in rehab she is now 20 weeks sober. And then the second picture demonstrates how to enjoy life alcohol-free, the day will embolden future generations to say no to alcohol.” It is a brave move for the star to publicly talk about her addictions. Michelle admitted at the height of her alcoholism she was drinking up to two bottles of wine and a bottle of vodka every day since 2018, until her rehab in May of this year. On entering the Priory rehab facility, Michelle, aged 42, admits the consultant rang her husband Hugh and told him he didn’t know if she was going to make it such was the extent of her liver damage. “My liver was failing,” she went on to say. “I’m four months sober now although back then I could never even imagine four days sober.” Here are 10 celebrities that have battled alcoholism yet luckily come out the other side. Hear in their own words how they have coped with their issues.
BEFORE

AFTER
TY… GET ME INTO REHAB BRADLEY COOPER DAVID HASSELHOFF
Bradley is known for his comedic film roles. But like most of us, Cooper’s life has had its ups and downs. He is recovering from alcoholism and has been sober for over a decade. In 2015 he described how alcohol affected virtually everything in his life, “I wouldn’t have been able to have access to myself or other people, or even been able to take in other people, if I hadn’t changed my life. I never would have been able to have the relationships that I do. I never would have been able to take care of my father the way I did when he was sick. So many things.” Cooper’s statements attest to the fact that alcohol affects more than just yourself - it also affects those around you.
DANIEL RADCLIFFE
The beloved star of the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise has struggled, like many other child actors, growing up in show business. While his character Harry was innocent and heroic, for Daniel Radcliffe, real-life challenges started affecting him, namely his addiction to alcohol. In a recent interview, Radcliffe stated how he came to the realisation that “the drinking was unhealthy and damaging to my body and my social life,” and how he had become “a recluse at 20.” He even admitted how he used to drink before going on the set, and how he confided in co-star Gary Oldman who’d also been addicted to alcohol. Despite now being sober, Radcliffe admits it’s not easy to maintain his sobriety at events where there’s alcohol. One of the greatest lessons he’s learned is that he had to want a sober life for himself. He stated in the same interview, “I had to stop myself. And stopping has shown me a world of happiness that I didn’t think was possible.”
A home video of a drunken ‘Baywatch’ star Hasselhoff went viral in 2007, receiving airtime on countless news programs and across the internet. His visitation rights with his daughters were temporarily suspended, forcing him to seek serious help for his addiction. In 2015, he said of his stint in rehab, “It is my responsibility to do the best I can and to take it one day at a time. But alcohol can become deadly. The scariest is when you go into a meeting and you’re like, ‘Where’s Steve?’ and they say, ‘Oh Steve died last night’. But you just met him yesterday! It’s a very scary, deadly thing that needs to be addressed.” Indeed, Hasselhoff takes his battles with alcohol much more seriously these days, and has also decided to transform his lifestyle completely with diet and exercise.
LINDSAY LOHAN
In a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey, ‘Parent Trap’ actress Lindsey Lohan admitted that she had used cocaine between 10 to 15 times, but alcohol was her biggest addiction. It's hard to argue with her when you consider she has been arrested multiple times for incidences centred around drinking. She claimed that she didn't even like doing drugs, but that she “had to do it because it was the only thing that allowed her to keep partying harder and for longer.” Woah, that is definitely the mindset of someone who needs to take a step back from partying. Lindsay has been in and out of rehab countless times but is now sober having forged a career running beach clubs around the world.

FEATURES RUSSELL BRAND
Russell Brand is not shy about his past, in which he battled significant drug and alcohol issues that nearly killed him. On top of this, Brand battled a rampant sex addiction. When asked how many people he had sex with in a month, he answered, "Work out how many days and, here’s a simple rule, triple it! I love it. I’ve a very addictive personality.” Brand's commitment to sobriety is admirable though, especially when you consider it was one of the factors behind his divorce with Katy Perry. The singer was allegedly all about that party lifestyle, which, as you can imagine, would not sit well with a man who wanted to raise a family and move into a calmer phase of his life. When talking about his former addiction, he reflected on his personality as well, stating, "I have friends who can smoke weed, swill gin, even do crack, and then merrily get on with their lives. For me this is not an option. I will relinquish all else to ride that buzz to oblivion."
DEMI LOVATO
She went from “Barney and Friends” to pop star, but along the way she dealt with mental health struggles that led her to self-medicate herself into devastating addictions to drugs and alcohol. There was a time, she admitted in an interview, when she couldn’t make it 30 minutes without cocaine and would smuggle it with her on airplanes. With hard-earned sobriety now in place, she’s a vocal spokesperson for mental health and addiction treatment causes. “I had a Sprite bottle filled with vodka and it was just nine in the morning and I was throwing up in the car and this was just to get on a plane to go back to LA to the sober living house that I was staying at. … I had all the help in the world, but I didn’t want it. When I hit that moment I was like, it’s no longer fun when you’re doing it alone.”
BILLY JOEL
Famous rock musician Billy Joel has admitted to struggling with alcohol abuse during most of his adult life. Drinking has, apparently, gotten in the way of his career and personal relationships. Fellow musician (and frequent touring partner) Elton John begged Joel to get treatment for alcoholism. In an early 2011 issue of Rolling Stone, John is quoted as saying that Joel needed to check into “tough” rehab, and that alcoholism was getting in the way of his life and career. In a recent interview Joel mused about his past drinking habits: “I don’t know why I drank so much I don’t subscribe to AA, I don’t subscribe to 12step stuff. Sometimes I just overdid it … but it wasn’t consistent, it would be periods of time, during a divorce or something.” Even if the drinking wasn’t consistent, the binge-drinking Joel describes here is another form of alcohol addiction.

STEPHEN KING
Horror novelist Stephen King struggled with drugs and alcohol for a considerable period of time. In 1987, King’s family and friends staged an intervention, dumping evidence of his addictions in front of him. King immediately sought help and quit all forms of drugs and alcohol in the late 1980s. He said, “There's a thing in AA, something they read in a lot of meetings, “The Promises.” Most of those promises have come true in my life, We'll come to know a new freedom and new happiness, that's true. But it also says in there, “We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. And I have no wish to shut the door on the past. I have been pretty upfront about my past. But do I regret? I do. I do. I regret the necessity.” King’s not about to pretend he didn’t have struggles with alcohol, nor does he think he should hide it, either. It’s a part of who he is, and he’s been sober ever since his family intervention.
CARRIE FISHER
Aside from her fame as Princess Leia in ‘Star Wars, Carrie Fisher was also well-known for her public statements about her health and addictions. In 2008 she even published a book about her struggles, called ‘Wishful Drinking’. She wrote “Happy is one of the many things I'm likely to be over the course of a day and certainly over the course of a lifetime. But I think if you have the expectation that you're going to be happy throughout your life, more to the point, if you have a need to be comfortable all the time, well, among other things, you have the makings of a classic drug addict or alcoholic.” Indeed, alcohol is often used as a coping mechanism, and Fisher describes — in her usual humorous fashion how drinking can make this worse. Tragically, Fisher died of a heart attack in December 2016. It is thought that a relapse was partially to blame. Fans continue to mourn the loss of the actress.
MEL GIBSON
Mel Gibson has publicly admitted to battling alcoholism for most of his adult life. He was arrested in 2009 for driving under the influence. In a previous 2006 arrest, made on the basis of suspected drunk driving, the arresting officer claimed he made anti-Semitic remarks. In the past, Gibson sought professional help, and checked himself into rehab for his alcohol problem. In 2016, reported Gibson laying out the harsh reality that comes with thinking about quitting alcohol. “They say there’s only three options: You go insane, you die, or you quit.” Mel Gibson has been sober for 15 years now and swears by the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-steps programme.
These celebrities illustrate that alcohol is often used to self-medicate and to alleviate life’s stresses. Their honesty about their struggles are both heartbreaking and endearing. When alcohol consumption becomes abusive, it’s time to seek treatment. It’s important to address the underlying issues in order to treat alcohol addiction. HALF TERM IS HER W
ow wow wow, it only seems like 5 minutes ago the kids started back at school again and now we are what seems like days away from another 2 week half term break!!! Argggghhhh I hear you cry! But do not stress, coping with this is just about 3 P’s planning, planning, planning. When holidays are on the horizon and you're thinking a UK staycay is on the cards the only way to manage and live to see another day is to act like it’s a military operation and get everything organised to keep the kids happy and the stress at bay. So, whether you're a single dad, a mum of 4 or whatever, I am coming to the rescue with ideas and strategies to get you through this October half term time until the Christmas lights go up and we can all relax, NOT!!!! Where do we start, how can I get this done without tearing my hair out and literally shouting at everyone, apart from your boss of course, as that will cause more problems?!
So planning planning planning… first up to sit up and think. This might seem a little odd but actually if you sit, breathe deeply and are quiet for a little time then ideas can pop up in your head that maybe would not have had a chance to manifest in amongst the crazy busy minds we all have. Once you're sitting quietly, somewhere relaxing and quiet perhaps write a plan for each day and how you might fill these with fun for everyone. Surrey Rocks has a great monthly Events Calendar and What’s On page so you can be strategic and formalise a really great plan full of fun stuff for the kids, which can make half term easier and calmer for everyone. In the lead up to this next holiday break plan and organise as much self-care as you can for yourself. If that’s a manicure, a spa day, a walk in your favourite spot, a lunch with a good friend or even grabbing the latest best seller and curling up to read the entire book in a few sessions. Whatever it is, by doing this you will be feeding your soul and allowing yourself the ability to prepare for a busy couple of weeks with all the family. Did you know sitting calmly and breathing slowly will reduce the stress hormone cortisol and reduce your blood pressure as well. Basically, a great way to focus and feel better in an easy peasy way. Plus, you may find it will help stop you getting irate at the kids when they’ve trashed the house again! Next up is your energy levels. In order to smash this autumn holiday you need bags of it. Improved energy takes time to build up so start as soon as you can. First things first is diet. Clean up your diet by reducing sugar, high fat foods and fill up instead on fruit, vegetables and whole foods. Salads with chickpeas for protein and lots of greens is a great one. Or if the weather is chilly how about a vegetable lasagne, so easy and great for all the family and can even stretch to more than one meal. Sleep is another way to improve your energy levels, get to bed earlier and if you struggle getting to bed or sleeping there are several ways to improve this. Stretching or yoga before bed,
52 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 02
RE ALREADY! a nice warm bath also helps. Have you tried meditation before bed? It’s a game changer and you are guaranteed to drift off easy after listening to a relaxing sleep version. Have you thought about exercise much recently? This is a surefire way to ensure you’re full of beans for half term fun. Maybe slowly at first but if you can add some walking, jogging, swimming or whatever you enjoy in the weeks leading up to this holiday then you’ll feel amazing both mentally and physically. Just 10 minutes of movement improves focus and concentration so get moving! Then when it comes to taking the kids swimming or for walks you’ll feel fitter and healthier to keep up with them.
If you’d like help resetting your health before Xmas, please go ahead and book a free consultation with me. www.sarahstannard.com
If you are stuck with original ideas on how to entertain the kids this half term; Ditton Cruisers, based at Taggs Boatyard in Thames Ditton, are offering weekday half term cruises at discounted rates for Surrey Rocks readers. Call 020 8398 2119 to book a boat trip on The Thames.
Now let’s get serious and talk about the A word. Alcohol, this can be so damaging to our bodies and health. I am not trying to say remove it all together as it totally has a place in my life but getting less of it is so beneficial it cannot be ignored. Have you maybe thought about an alcohol-free beer or nosecco? They are great substitutes and low sugar ones can be great too. It’s been proven that alcohol can actually restrict the brain’s ability to create new brain cells. This is not what you want when trying to be fit and healthy. So, if your Thursday to Saturday drinking only has slipped during these long lockdown months then try and pull it back to no drinking Monday through Thursday and you will look and feel so much better. Last but not least is enjoy! Have fun during these holidays; kids grow up fast and they won’t be young and happy to cuddle us forever. Have a great time and don’t worry, the spring will be here before we know it!

COLOUR PALETTES W
Sadie Pizzey Sadie Pizzey Interiors is a full-service design firm based in Guildford. SP Interiors works on both residential and commercial projects and has recently been shortlisted for The International Design and Architecture Awards. Sadie designs with practical knowledge gained from extensive renovation experience. Her exceptional organisation and project management skills mean she keeps projects running to time and budget, developing innovative schemes and beautiful spaces to inspire clients. Sadie’s philosophy is: “We need our homes to be our battery chargers, to help us re-build and recover from everything that life throws at us. Designing spaces that embrace this, will dramatically improve our quality of life”. www.sadiepizzeyinteriors.com 74 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 02
hen the topic of interior colour palettes are introduced, a large percentage of people interpret that to mean what colour should I paint my walls? But actually the colour palette of a home is seen in every element of what makes up each space. From windows to flooring, to lighting, to joinery. It all makes up colours and textures that interact and impact each other.
WHERE TO START
When I design a single space or a whole house I have never started with wall colour, that is almost decided for me by the other selections that are made for the space. My design journey starts with the emotion of a home or room. I want to know how does that client want to feel in this finished home? What do they want to see and be drawn to as they move round their home? These big questions then get narrowed down to specifics and details.
TEXTURES
I am drawn to a lot of natural materials and unique textures. Although colours will come into the choices, the texture and feel is more of my jumping off point. I build up the textures and layers carefully for a project. I also want to think about what my stars of the space are. The juxtaposition of how a striking texture or colour will then impact my choices for the rest of the space. We want our interiors to be warm, inviting, inspiring spaces, so getting the balance right is incredibly important. A space that is busy and has lots of strong layers and features is messy and exhausting to be in. Art can also provide the starting point. Either if a client has some beautiful art or is desperate for us to find a certain piece of art that
HOME & INTERIORS makes them feel a certain way. A recent project started in that exact way, the client had a beautiful painting of an Indian temple which was a mix of rich blue, burnt oranges and burnished golds. The painting and the colours were so inspiring that was our jumping off point and influenced the entire space. When we are brought into service either a new build or a new extension, then clients often choose us because of our talent for using texture and interesting materials. Materials that bring warmth and personality to what could be a stark, uninteresting space or home. This then obviously influences our colour palettes.
THE RED THREAD
The red thread is a topic that is heavily discussed in the world of interiors. The concept is that through your home, there is a thread (of any colour or texture) that is repeatedly seen as you move through your spaces. I'm not saying that every space needs to be the same colour (that would be very dull!) just moments and hints of repeated colour or texture. In some of our projects you will see burnished metals as a red thread, in some spaces it is impactful and in others it is just a hint. Other projects are linked by hints of a repeated colour or variations within a palette.
KEY SPACES
If we are designing a whole home, then we always begin with the key spaces. The spaces that will impact the owners the most, and or the spaces that have the most design diemmas to solve. After the layouts are concrete, then we focus on those concepts to start with. As we move around the rest of the home, these concepts then impact the direction and choices we make for all the other rooms. If we have chosen some incredible textures and an awe-inspiring material palette, then we are unlikely to select bright impact wall décor. It distracts and makes the room a visual headache. Balance is the key to all spaces. We are more likely to choose a neutral paint tone and add some moments of intrigue with colour and texture in smaller details, such as cushions, window treatments and other accessories.
INTERCEPTION OF ROOMS
How rooms intercept with each also plays a huge part in selecting palettes for each space. For example, if we have designed a light, heavy textured kitchen, then we are likely to play with contrast with say a utility room or pantry the leads off that space. This works for a number of reasons, if we stick to the kitchen/utility example by choosing a dark, contrasting palette for the utility room, it means that the useful utilitarian space is not highlighted from the kitchen. It remains a mystery of a space that is intriguing to the human eye. This contrast can also work well with hallways. Often we meet clients who want to create a light, bright hallway. This is a challenge if you have a corridor effect with no natural light. Actually by embracing this and choosing a palette of dark, moodier tones, it not only creates a rich, inviting entrance to your home, but if you then open off that space with a light, bright room then the contrast is incredibly impactful. The interception of spaces is often a point that doesn't occur to clients. If you are selecting your palettes yourself, then one of the most important stages is to walk around your home and pay close attention to what can be seen from each space. For example If I look up my stairs my eye line is drawn to the master suit and our cabinetry for our walk-in wardrobe. With burnished metals being a strong thread in our home, this impacted my section for a rich deep blue finish with burnished metal gold leaf. Now if I had just chosen some white cabinetry for that space (because it's neutral and a common choice for joinery), I would see a horrible stark jar from the warmth and texture of the hallway.

tones still need to be with the same family. Another good option is to choose paint ranges that offer different strengths. Little Greene's popular choice of French Grey is offered in four different strengths, which allows us a design a scheme that subtly changes as you move through the different areas of the space.
KNOWING WHAT YOU LIKE
ROOM USAGE
The usage of each space and how our clients want to feel in each space is another huge influence on the choice of colour palettes. If a client wants to feel inspired and uplifted in a space, then we will be more influenced by bolder colours. For restful spaces such as bedrooms and snugs, we select calmer, tranquil colours. These could be either end of the light or dark spectrum of colours.
STRENGTHS OF COLOUR
Open plan spaces present all sorts of design dilemmas and the colour palette is one. Sometimes it is appropriate to use contrasting colours to zone parts of the space. The

After all is said and done this is your home. It should be a reflection of everything that makes you feel good about the world. As much as I could say that green is this years latest trend colour. You might hate green and it may have negative connotations for you. If you aren’t sure what you like, sometimes starting with your wardrobe is a good place to begin. If you find you wear lots of dark and rich colours, then chances are you will be happy to have them in your home. On our projects we always ask clients to spend some time collating inspirational images and then breaking down what they like about each image. We then bounce this back with concepts to see how clients respond to colours and textures combined together on one board. Award-winning restaurant, Thai Terrace, serves only the finest, authentic Thai food. Located behind Guildford Castle this stunning rooftop restaurant offers superb panoramic views across the whole of the historic market town of Guildford. Choose to eat in the main restaurant with its exquisite décor or dine al fresco under the stars on the outdoor terrace. There’s also a grand bar area for pre-dinner drinks.
Inspired by the original Manhattan Bar that TGI had on 63rd and 1st, the US conglomerate has diversified launching a new, more upmarket enterprise. Interestingly, the only two 63RD & 1sts are in NYC and Cobham, Surrey. As much as our reviewers wanted to dislike the start of the new chain; the service, food, décor and cocktails requests we tested them on – were on point. A brave, bold move but this restaurant excelled on every level.

Or maybe you are planning an event yourself? Ditto has just started doing venue hire. This can be from as little as 30 to as many as 120 guests – depending on the size of your function. Get in touch to be offered a detailed quote for your next party.
OUR EXPERIENCE… We arrived at Ditto on Monday afternoon, and were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by one of the owners, who are always on

hand to ensure every guest gets the five star Ditto service. The restaurant was surprisingly busy for a Monday with 30-40 diners in total… always the sign of a good restaurant! We choose to sit in the light, airy conservatory area after being offered a table in the Secret Garden (another huge plus for Ditto – as you can see from our photographer’s pictures).
RESTAURANTFASHION REVIEW
The service was exemplary. Our brilliant waitress Suzanna gave us just the right time to order and even gave us recommendations from our given dietary requirements. Next up was ordering – with such a wide and varied menu we were spoilt for choice. To start, I went for the King Prawn with Garlic and White Wine Sauce served on toasted sourdough with a mixed leaf salad. The prawns were huge, fresh and perfectly cooked with just the right amount of garlic, not too overpowering. The salad was drizzled in balsamic and the toasted home-baked sourdough slices were the perfect compliment to this delicious dish. My guest ordered the Salt and Pepper Squid; deep-fried calamari with chilli, lime and basil alioli. Cooked to perfection with just the right amount of crispy batter (no signs of any grease). The chilli, lime and basil accompaniments set this dish off perfectly. For the main course, I opted for a Ditto favourite, Moules Mariniere; a generous helping of tasty mussels (caught fresh that day) in a sumptuous cream and French white wine sauce with shallots, onions and flat leaf parsley, served with home-baked sourdough bread. If you are feeling particularly hungry, the larger portion Ditto offer of this classic dish comes with French Fries, perfect for dunking if there is any leftover sauce. Devine. My guest ordered the Spinach and Ricotta Tortellini for main which was served in a sun-blushed tomato pesto sauce with fried courgettes, kale and parsley. The fresh, homemade pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the softness of the pasta filling was perfectly offset by the crunch of the crispy kale leaves. An amazing dish. The pizzas, which our reviewers have had here on previous occasions, are also
fantastic. There are 11 to choose from – seven with tomato bases and 4 without. All are made mini for kids too on their ‘Diddy Ditto’ kids’ menu. There are also amazing meat dishes to try including 28 Day aged Surrey Farmed Sirloin with peppercorn, mushroom or blue cheese sauce or the Pan-Fried Breast of Duck with creamy mash, heritage carrots, wilted spinach and a wild berry jus. If you have room, Ditto do brilliant dessert options too. Choose from delights such as Sicilian Lemon Pana Cotta, served with a mixed berry compote and lemon shortbread or Tiramisu Cheesecake with biscuit base, coffee and Tia Maria liqueur, topped off with fresh blueberries and mint. There is also Ditto’s Chocolate Pizza, a savoury pizza, Nutella spread and your choice of sorbet or ice-cream. Slightly sinful but equally delightful.
IN SUMMARY… We were mightily impressed with Ditto Thames Ditton from start to finish. The quality of the food, presentation, décor, service and ambience was top notch. Surrey is blessed with lovely restaurants but this was a class above the rest. Hope you enjoy dining out at Ditto – we certainly did.

Investing IN yourself Ria Elaina Atkins A Mum’s Life Hello and welcome to my very first Surrey Rocks Magazine column. Let me introduce myself – I’m Ria, Mum of two, married to my handsome hubby. I’m born and bred in my beloved Surrey and spend most of my time between here and London. I’m a handbag and shoe addict and lover of all things luxe. To find out more about Ria’s luxe lifestyle follow her on Instagram @ria.elaina 94 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 02
I
wanted to talk to you about one of my major obsessions - handbags. In today’s world of low interest rates, more and more people are considering investing their money in luxury items instead of putting it into a savings account. Collecting luxury products has been a booming market for some years now, and more and more people are beginning to consider handbags as an investment. I certainly am! In particular, Chanel and Hermes have experienced a huge valuation spike in the last 10 years. In 2011 a Classic Medium Chanel Flap bag was retailing for £2670, however, today that exact bag retails at £5,890. This increase in value is also reflected on the secondary market. Chanel has such a long history as a luxury brand, it raises it’s prices on a regular basis and also constrains its supply. This makes for great resale value. Hermes have long been the most sought-after and desired makers of ultra-luxury handbags. The Kelly and Birkin are the most coveted investment pieces. It is notoriously hard to get your hands on a Birkin or Kelly straight from the store. Due to this and the huge demand for these bags, the prices on the secondary market are considerably more than in store. This is the only way many women will have the opportunity to get their hands on the iconic and desirable bag. I have been lucky enough to get a couple from the store, but have also bought one from a luxury second hand store. I knew that it would be impossible to score this particular bag straight from the store due to the specification. Even though it was more expensive than store prices, I bought it because, well I couldn’t resist! And it was of course still a good investment. During lockdown, I noticed through Instagram how the secondary luxury market began to boom through stories. I started following Sellier Knightsbridge who are one of the leading luxury second hand resellers in the world. Owned by the fashionable and very elegant Hanushka Toni who is also obsessed with handbags, probably more than me! She has some really informative IGTVs on why buying second hand is such a great investment. This fast paced virtual shopping phenomenon

became addictive. I managed to nab a pair of beautiful Hermes pink ostrich sandals for about half of the retail price. With their very catchy tag line of #fastestfingersfirst it’s no wonder that their items sell out in a matter of seconds. I have also had the pleasure of meeting Sabrina Sadiq, the CEO of Luxury Promise who is an absolute boss lady! How she manages running a successful business both in the UK and Dubai, as well as being a mum to 3 boys I will never know. I popped into their South Molton Street store and ended up buying a beautiful vintage black velvet Chanel bag. The craftsmanship of vintage Chanel bags is something so spectacular, with all the hardware being made of 24 carat gold. They now offer a live shopping experience through Instagram which is a really unique way of shopping and makes the whole experience so fun. Their Hermes collection is also one of the largest I have ever seen. Sign Of The Times are another fantastic store based in Chelsea. I always seem to pick up the most fabulous finds from there, including Chanel mules, Balenciaga boots and my beautiful orange baby Birkin. They recently had an event for Second Hand September where they had a panel of speakers talking about sustainability in fashion and all the benefits this provides. It certainly got me thinking about how I want to be more savvy when I am shopping, spend less money on “fast fashion” and invest more into the second hand market. Locally, there are also some great luxury second hand finds. I recently had a wonderful experience with Phoenix Style who are based in both Cobham and Wimbledon. They do a home collection service where they come to pick up your items ready to sell, I mean how convenient is that?! Moving on from investing in yourself externally, to investing in yourself internally. The London Finishing Academy offer one of the most unique courses you will ever find. They are an exclusive finishing school for men and women, encompassing modern cultural modules, along with the finest traditional teachings. They are offering one day taster courses held at The Goring Hotel in London, taught by an expert panel of speakers. A snippet of topics include the art of scenting, an insight into the life of Princess Diana’s protection by her ex-bodyguard himself, confident conversation, mindset and visualisation, floral artistry, personal styling and a tour of Diplomatic and Royal St James with access to places not open to the public, and insight into the Queen’s Jewellery collection and a fine dining experience in their Michelin starred restaurant. Tickets are limited so get booking now. This educational experience is an investment for life. Who wouldn’t want to better themselves in every single way?!

Hidden truths, secrets, portals to potential as well as doors to possibilities reopen this month. Yes, we are in spooky Hogwarts weather now where you are being asked to rely on your intuition and insight to guide you if you want to avoid the muggles, Aries. You know who I mean – those individuals who think small and just want you to bring your dreams down to their level. Ahead of Halloween and El Día de los Muertos, it is time to connect to your authentic and fearless truth. Why? Because your truth is how you stand up for love. New beginnings around dynamic duos, double acts and even duels begin now thanks to a new Moon in your long-term love zone on the 6th. To know love when it appears, you need to know your truth. As for that meeting – there’s no such thing as a coincidence this October.
21 APR – 20 MAY
How you work, at what and where, features this month. How has your job been affected by Covid for instance? If you have already seen changes occur around this, take it more are on their way. Plus your priorities are shifting along with this. Yes, dear resolute Taurus – I know you hate change or not knowing where your next mealtime is. But take it from me that experimenting with those habits, routines and responsibilities or being adaptable if change appears uninvited, will bring enormous benefits between now and the 26th October. Love and your cash play a larger role from the second week of October. Tackle any insecurities or fears around either. You have serious sex appeal as we head towards November. But the question is - do you know it? Charge up that mojo and act like you own it, in order to get it.
112 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 02
When ruler Mercury is in retrograde, this puts the brakes on any new endeavour. Be this the love or any other kind when it is backwards in your house of romance, fun and pleasure. Yes, it feels like you are the ultimate party pooper. But the good news is that this has just been your preparation time for when everything moves forward again after the 18th. Put those ideas in motion now. If you’ve spent the past few weeks feeling as if you were permanently shrouded in Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak, expect to be noticed for all the right reasons once again. Yes, things may not have gone to plan but you emerge certain and sure of what you want. Destiny takes a hand when it comes to any kind of partnership matter. That bae, that boss, that bestie. You’re on the verge of ditching something long term and replacing it with something so much better. Worth the wait, Gemini.
Bring that focus down to that place you love the most, Cancer. October says home and your roots matter more than ever. What sustains your soul gets the ultimate makeover and the new Moon in this sector of your chart on the 6th marks the time not just for changing rooms but changing lifestyles if needed. From the 18th onwards you have a green light to put any plans to move or relocate into motion. Family members or those you live with may be particularly supportive now. Linking to the past, delving deeper into your family tree and understanding how your parents or even ancestor’s stories have influenced who you are today on some level, fills in any gaps in your history or even your future purpose. So, delve into genealogy or talk to those older relatives. All very appropriate as we head towards Halloween. You can ask those ancestors directly. Their stories are relevant in some way to the choices you make now. Dig deeper.
Zhuzh up those wizarding ways this Halloween month, Leo. Venus working your fabulous 5th is all about feeling it to attract it. And then going every witch-way you can to get it! Unleash that playfulness and above all, if the past few weeks have felt like extremely hard going, step free of the feeling by flatly refusing to take life so seriously. From the 18th you’ll feel the flow of forward motion once again. October tells you not to glow it alone and make that extra effort to see and be seen. Show that social life the love and it will repay you in unexpected ways. Such as the right people, the right time and the right place. Above all, beware of anything that requires you to push, chase or just seems like hard work. This month is all about flow and effortless attraction when you just go with it and have fun. If you’re still doing all the heavy lifting in a connection this could be a sign it’s simply not for you.
October is a month to play by the rules as opposed to writing your own, Virgo. Ruler Mercury remains retrograde in your money zone until the 18th. Then allow for another three weeks for it to clear its retroshadow. So, keeping an eye on your expenses, watching where the money goes and waiting to launch any new income generating moves still applies. The tried and trusted approach will prove to be your best investment. As will any you make around your home, lifestyle and living arrangements now. Moving home should be delayed until after the 18th at least if possible. But renovating, redecorating, changing rooms and simply looking at how to live more beautifully and sustainably on an emotional level, pays off over the long term. Leveraging your living space – especially if you now spend more time in it, brings long term life enhancements. Redecorate your environment – from your soul outwards too.

Your gift this birthday cycle has been the luxury of taking all the time you need to refine those future plans, Libra. So, perfect that magic vision when it comes to what you want to do, have or experience in your upcoming cycle. October tells you there’s no rush. Hints around this will begin to appear with the new Moon in your sign on the 6th. Chances are you will feel renewed and ready on some level. But wait to initiate anything until after the 18th when Mercury heads direct once more. Ruler Venus infuses those ideas with a new level of creativity and persuasive enhancement from the 7th. You’re now in the mood to flirt with future possibilities. How does the future look? It could come packaged with a sense of adventure and be oh-so-casually yet daringly sexy in its own way. Get ready to explore, Libra.
Your social life soars from the 7th and your love life sizzles after the 10th. Dynamic duos and double acts feature. There are plenty of opportunities to ‘Be Two’ for singles. This could just as easily be that new BFF, activity partner, collaborator or work duet. Of course, if you’re single and seeking you need to put yourself out there so that meet-cute can happen. Whether this is online or a real world love act this is waiting to happen. What September tells you is nobody achieves anything alone. This month could deliver connections that may offer a major assist towards that goal. Whatever you do – don’t judge a book by its cover. Your social or romantic life may hit a speed bump at the end of the month, although you may welcome the down-shift, simply to recharge. This is a good sign though as you may need time to think about your future.
It’s about who not what you know this month as the retrograde weather breaks up. Contacts or people from the past may feature from the 23rd. Has someone been on your mind lately? How about a reach-out, Sag? New and destiny dusted connections may enter your life. If so, they are going to direct your future down a new path or be instrumental in helping you attain a long-cherished goal. Within the present restrictions we find ourselves living through – circulate. Venus sashays into your sign on the 7th October and this combined with the North Node in your partnership zone, adds up to fated attractions – without the bunny boiling! After months of simply feeling you are spinning your wheels, October has you living – or even loving, large again. Or at least paving the way through your people to doing that by December.
Prepare to take a deep dive into your path, purpose and your past, Capricorn. After last month’s push forward, this one could have you on pause for a while. It’s a time of soul knowing and preparedness. To look at what still holds true for you. As well as what needs to be discarded or even reclaimed. If something revives now – it is meant to. If not, release it for good. Above all, look back at what you may have given up that you still love. Or which holds meaning for you. This can be anything from a hobby, a job or career, a place, a group of people, a cause, passion or activity. If the feelings are there then do what you can to revive this. But again, this has to be within your control. Your creativity and intuition will be at their peak from the 7th. And honestly, your inner guide is your own best judge of what remains true for you. Don’t tune out its magical wisdom this Halloween season.
You’ve had more than your unfair share of retrograde restrictions due to both retrograde Jupiter and Saturn in your sign plus Mercury retro in your expansion zone, Aquarius. The good news is that barriers to progress get charm treatment as Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and Pluto all change to forward motion again. By the third week of the month, you’re a force to be reckoned with. What’s hot for you this Halloween season is your career and status. Your public image. Your smarts. Whether you realise it or not, you’re on Dumbledore’s radar now – and in a good way. Someone in a position of influence, authority or a gatekeeper has seen your capacity to bring it and taken note. Be seen as someone who knows what they want and who works at what they have. A serious attitude gets serious results now. Don’t waver, Aquarius.
Time to work your emotional and intuitive wisdom, Pisces. And to fuse this with the facts. If you’ve allowed yourself to drift when it comes to that work, day job, studies or even your wellbeing, October is telling you to create boundaries and bring it all back into line again. Your always infallible higher self is telling you exactly what areas need your focus and attention now – so please take note. And follow through in a practical way. This may take a lot of self-discipline, but the results will be well worth it. Above all, don’t resort to escapism. Either through daydreaming, food, alcohol, drugs (prescription or otherwise), that screen addiction, or even via a person or relationship. This won’t go away by itself. It requires you to show extreme self-love by acting in a way that is good for you. Sadly, self-love often adds up to tough love. You’d do the same for someone you cared about. October says – ensure you care about you the same way.

Can a four-piece, 90 gigs a year cover band from Surrey suddenly became an overnight festival ‘headline stealing’ Rock act? We certainly think so…having written, recorded and produced their successful debut EP ‘Halfway to Hell’ they continue to grow from strength to strength with their kick ass Classic Rock material. We caught up with the charismatic lead vocalist and frontman Matt Fielder for our a debrief about the album, performing live and much more.
MATT FIELDER RANSOM ROCKS
HOW IS THE NEW EP BEING RECEIVED? We recorded it a year ago under extremely difficult and problematic conditions. Indeed there was a lot of covert (as opposed to Covid) recording, under cover of the night, very cloak and dagger stuff across various technological platforms which I won’t bore you with now. We were also very humbled and grateful to family, friends and fans who generously supported our Crowd Funding page. Anyway, we eventually ended up with four absolute bangers - and the reaction absolutely blew us away with interest from record labels, radio stations, magazines and Neal Kay, the godfather of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal!
there was also a Barley Mow down the road in Hersham! Lee said later that that although he hadn’t been with us very long he didn’t actually recognise any of the other band members setting up around him. He travels in the band van now with Dave to every gig!
WHAT’S NEXT FOR RANSOM ROCKS? We generally never looked much further than our next pint or the next Boozer we were playing in but with all that’s happened we’ve had to rethink a little more strategically. We have a Christmas Single ‘A Christmas Held to Ransom’ being re-released at Christmas. But more importantly we have upgraded the four tracks of our EP added five more plus the Christmas track all remixed and remastered for an album.
IF YOU HAD TO TAKE THREE THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE? Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie and Jennifer Lawrence.
WHAT’S YOUR FUNNIEST TOURING/ GIGGING STORY? I have a book coming out next year about a previous band I was in full of stories but I’m generally of the persuasion that “A gentleman never tells…his wife at least” And of course the old cliché what goes on tour stays on tour…unless she’s free Tuesday afternoons when my wife goes to the gym! But all gags apart I think our first gig with our new drummer Lee was quite funny. Our first gig back since lockdown, we were all a bit nervous and edgy so I phoned him up to check he knew where the venue was and to tell him that I would be a little late as I’d only just finished work. He said not to worry and that he was already at the venue and about to set up. I arrived thirty minutes later and there was absolutely no sign of him. Time was pressing and the punters were getting restless. It was then we remembered that
118 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 02
HOW DID YOU COPE IN LOCKDOWN? I got creative as did the band - it was frustrating but we used the anger, confusion divisions and confinement to create the music so it was cathartic. I also wrote two books, the band one I mentioned earlier and a poetry book already published! A Life In A Calendar Year (Austin Macauley Publishers).
fairly similar… apart from the fact he’s really good looking, successful and American! WHO ARE YOUR IDEAL CELEBRITY DINNER PARTY GUESTS? People who are funny, well-travelled, interesting and at ease with others having the limelight, nothing worse than insecure, diva, look at me types. So, I reckon, Steven Fry, Ricky Gervais, Michael Palin, David Attenborough, Romesh Ranganathan and Anthony Hopkins would be a pretty good start. BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN? “Matthew, there are people who say and people who do,” by the late great sports writer, Hugh McIlvanney - his son is my best mate. MOST EMBARRASSING ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE? Pretty much most of it really, although I do have a pink G-string from somewhere and have absolutely no idea how it got there or indeed if it still fits! WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP? Taller.
IF YOU COULD PERPETUATE A MYTH ABOUT YOURSELF WHAT WOULD IT BE? That I love myself as much as people might think, that the arrogant stage persona, bravado and apparent flirtatious nature is not the real me and that I’m far deeper conscientious and philosophical that most will ever know. Ok the flirtatious bit is true… WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN THE MOVIE VERSION OF YOUR LIFE? I used to get told a lot I looked like Richard Gere, But I’ve never owned a gerbil since the school one died on my watch. But maybe Matthew McConaughey? I’ve just read his book Green Lights and we are
WORST HABIT? Pissing in the sink when it’s a shared bathroom and using my wife’s toothbrush when those panic pandemic freaks buy up all the toilet roll. IF YOU WERE AN ANIMAL WHAT WOULD YOU BE? A bear in ‘Yosemite Sleep’ during the winter for six months wake up, Yawn, take a massive dump scratch my back and ass on the nearest Redwood tree and then go looking for berry’s and people picnicking. A great life all to the tune of the Bare Necessities. WHAT´S THE BEST THING ABOUT SURREY? The National Trust walks, many a worry is cured by a long walk and a pint at a nice pub and Surrey has loads to choose from.
