editorial VERSION 2.019 'Algorithm' was like a subject on my mind as an object of study for some time. When the theme blinked at me, I honestly did not have the inclination to start, as it seemed to me that I wanted to venture into the highly specialized and complex world of programming with a few knowledge of DOS, Windows, MacOS and Linux plus some road as a user ... But it's went like a slang into everyday language and the understanding became urgent. Firstly, I thought that the majority who were ran this way are just to raise and raise, finding more access in their pages or growing sales. It sounded lawful and acknowledged that there are actually more successful entrepreneurs on the network for knowing what it is about than laymen, but yet I still resisted. Until heard the term from the mouth of the youtuber @SandroRocha during an interview to @LedaNagle and the subject was awakened: 'Do not mess with my algorithms, huh ...'. What?! What he was talking about?… Welcome to our 15th edition._

Still on the firsts pages of the renowned graphic novel 'Batman, the Dark Knight', Bruce Wayne walks on the streets of Gotham City once again disturbed by his memories from the night his father and mother were murdered. Absorbed, in suit and with your hands in his pockets, mr. Batman already in his 50 years-old almost fills that frame, but the author @FrankMiller lets us see some zombic figures composing the urban landscape around them boasting those advertising plates as we can see commonly carried in commercial areas to advertise some product or service, wrote 'The End is Near'.
There is no more talk about it in the rest of the issue. Sure, that wasn't necessary: the message is part of the whole script and only emphasized in that comic the gravity of the context in which the famous character is inserted in its proposed future. And as we were struck
by the sentence when it was used as a title in a story published on 21st March at @ConsequenceofSound on the launching of an algorithm as a record company artist, the slogan was recovered by our memory and joined one of the themes that we had pointed out as an object of later study, thus defining the theme of this edition 15: @Endel, the algorithm that wants to have 1 million friends like @RobertoCarlos sang making music is one of the newest digital phenomena or a good idea of the Marketing, but undoubtedly is a technological advance that draws even more attention to this virtual plan increasingly present day-by-day.
'Algorithm' is no longer what it was before. Popularly, until the mid-1990's it was Mathematics introduced at the last years of the High School and deepened in Secondary and Exact Sciences. With the increase of the
videogames, personal computers and mobile phones that bring us closer to the computer language itself, the algorithm has supplanted the term 'program' and during this decade almost comes to be personified as a kind of independent artificial intelligency that governs the data.
In the school we were learning that 'algorithm' is an inherent logic of combinatorial analysis, certain procedures and mathematical rules that is associating informations and that is applied to almost everything that we can being construct from calculations. Today, bloggers, twitters, youtubers, @Facebook, @Whatsapp, and @Instagram users ─ among others ─, took the noun as a first name to suggest us something similar to a digital entity, an operating oracle, while they are trying understand better the Internet and its platforms to leverage likes, page views, subscriptions, signatures, etc.

So, nothing is more obvious how unprecedented and genial that 'he' - the algorithm - 'solved' one day to be an artist, because the mentioned subject announces that the German company responsible for the artist signed a millionaire contract with @WarnerMusicGroup to record 20 albums of your iOS app in 2019.
'HE' IS NOT ONLY ONE MORE NERD Calling Endel an 'music artist' maybe is an exaggeration, cause what the app purports to produce is self-help songs - to improve sleep quality, heart rate control... But an algorithm is something so vast which makes even the understanding of the term a field of study. This is because your application is not restricted only to Mathematics, but to everything that can be associated, associable or associated, such as our own brain too.
As an exercise, we will try to extract some possibilities of the meaning of the word through associations and examplifying: 'algorithm' [literal]; 'all go rhythm' [a phonetical interpretation used in video subtitles and automatic audio transcription programs]; 'algo riddim' [other possible reading, 'something riddim']; and so on ... Why is there a mandatory field in the opening page of this issue on several Internet security pages? The ready answer is so obvious that it avoids reflection... Sure, if someone is trying maliciously to enter a website that does not have authorized access he'll just need click on the square confirming that he isn't a robot and proceed.
It seems that the question doesn't have this purpose; it's not to anyone who intends a breach of privacy, it is for a robot. The reason is simple: imagine that during some point of customization through so many processing performed an algorithm decided to take initiatives so independent that even led to circumventing protections and secrets inside the network, breaking privacy rules, and so on. When it ran front this question, it would have to lie and, if went ahead, it would put all its work in risk ─ a collapse of its own programming ─ because this lie would not regard support in other lines of command and operational executions.
This systematic solution has a reflection on another side of the coin: about monetization. Many people are already able to earn income on the Internet by producing content and sharing it, and the rest are behind this goal. The most frequent question is how to raise audience and convert it in real earnings? ─ both for those who already can and want to expand and for those who have not yet reached such a point. The most common ideas establish as cause and effect a formula that consists in time x money x equipments = success; others, lead the discussion to the order of recognition of talent, gift, charisma and quality of the offered to Internet users; but there is a growing number of users and entrepreneurs who also believe there to be such a digital interactive entity, which selects one among the expense of millions of others, and therefore a mutual relationship must be established for understanding better and manipulation of its criteria, hence the slang 'the algorithm' to be fashionable out of a fictional orbit to refer this post-interface in a more personal way.

can't remember the first time when I saw Jaime. In my memories is registered that I heard about him by a common friend from Barcelona too, whom had introduced years before, but he called him 'Jaume', with the Catalan accent. Years later, we were meeting in other places so far and distinct that I would not know how to enumerate them... On one of these occasions, when we'rein
the same staff to reformulated the infographics department of the newspaper that I was directing, we would continue to Lisbon on the final day, because that project was still to be presented in the branch of the Portuguese capital.
Jaime had taken the opportunity of coincidence with his wife's agenda and took her with him to Portugal. So we ran together to down the road in that late afternoon. He is a rare guy - and rare in both Portuguese, Spanish or other languages. I never felt uncomfortable around him despite his height of 1.90m, but we were far from mere hobby situations, and that was no exception: 'Andresinho, we would love to visit NazarĂŠ. What do you think?' He asked me as we began to approach Coimbra, which is near the cathedral.
It was nighttime, not in a holiday season or religious holiday. I confess that even though it was a recent construction site, without the appeal of European church architectures, parking in the courtyard of Nazareth at that time and with no one around in a mile was so strange as visiting a Gotham setting. It's something that anybody can't forget.
Jaime is seen in the job market in this eccentric and vain point-ofview, but charismatic and productive too. He became a kind of media star and a collector of international awards thru the publications where he was collaborating both for this personality and for expanding the artistic possibilities of dealing with printed information to a high level and quality that few colleagues have achieved.
But it was not until the beginning of this decade when the 'me' journalist would lose the fight against his 'self' artist. In 2010, Jaime gathered in an atelier to produce a series of works to exhibit, as any painter does. Behind the scenes such an attitude was already reviewed, but my surprise came with the first results that brought to the canvas an advanced blend of Art with Infographics, and contradictorily using the visual language of dots in the same way as the digital and spacial ages.
STUDIES FOR THE SERIES 'A FAMILY DIAGRAM' ABOUT A SINGLE DAY. IN THE FOLLOWING PAGE, THE RESULT PICTURE:PROMO
This was to be a standard ping-pong interview, but almost 10 days after we combined it and I sent the questions, Jaime had a soft health trouble during your real tou as a speaker - going through corporate environments , media companies and academic institutions ─, and we renegotiated the subject for this format.
The point is that today anyone who is researching the aesthetics of algorithmic visualizers will found Jaime Serra. But these production would eventually be considered as a laboratory. Serra had discovered a way to express what truly troubled him as an artist and soon began another one that elapse the whole year 2010 only for the information gathering phase with three couples he had selected. This project would design the triptych 'Sexual Life of a Stable Couple'.
The work hyped up. An earlier problem regarding the nomenclature of the departments of infographics and visual journalism as 'Art' in the organization charts became obsolete, because what is also called Art began to be not only revised as a new school seemed to be born there. Due to applied methodology and an elaborate artistic construction, 'Stable Couple Sexual Life' presents in a interesting way the performance of each lovers partnership during that year of sampling, typifying their sexual habits and preferences in a comparative format and innovating to be showing it in a graph of the language of data readers on computers.
Quickly, the journalist himself sees psychoanalysis.
