Suwanee Beer Fest returns to Town Center Park on March 19th to reclaim its title as the best craft beer festival and St. Patrick’s Day weekend party in Gwinnett.

Hello, Spring! last couple of months on the way to the bus stop, my daughter has been asking me, “When can I go swimming?” She’d look down at her gloves and puffy coat, which she despises, and huff, “I’m tired of the cold.” Even though my sweet little girl was born in the middle of winter, she’s definitely a warm-weather child. Mornings like these usually lead to a discussion about the seasons: After winter, we will enjoy spring, when the flowers begin to bloom and the weather starts to warm, and she’ll once again be able to enjoy playing outside without her big puffy coat — did I mention how much she dislikes that coat? And while it may not yet be warm enough to go swimming, there’s so much to love about spring. It’s when we get to shed the extra layers and finally enjoy the warm sun on our skin. Springs in Suwanee are the same way. While all the holiday events and excitement were fun, we all seem to give a collective exhale when spring returns. Here at Suwanee Magazine, spring sees the return of our favorite contest of the year: the Cutest Pup in Suwanee Contest! This year, there were more than 80 entries and each and every pup was adorable! However, only one could be named the winner. With more than 2,200 votes cast, this may have been the biggest year yet! Turn to p. 24 to see our first, second and third place Cutest Pups! Spring also marks the return of our favorite local festival: Suwanee Beer Fest! We’ve outlined all you need to know on OR THE

p. 56, including how the festival is reclaiming its title as the best St. Patrick’s Day weekend party in Gwinnett. Event organizers have gone above and beyond to continue to make the festival bigger and better, including adding awesome food trucks, live entertainment and fun festival games (two words: retro arcade). Suwanee Beer Fest also does a great job highlighting local Georgia breweries in its Georgia Beer Garden. Turn to p. 64 to learn about eight Georgia breweries making their festival debut this year. April 1st marks the second anniversary of Cheers Day, a day dedicated to carrying out random acts of kindness in memory of Adam Edge, who we sadly lost to cancer in 2020. Adam was a beloved member of our community who gave so much of himself to the city he loved. Turn to p. 28 to learn more about Cheers Day as well as $40 for 40, where the community is encouraged to donate to a few of Adam’s favorite organizations for what would have been his 40th birthday. The spring season is also the perfect time to start planning for the summer. That’s why each year we dedicate space in our spring issue to our Summer Camp Guide. Beginning on p. 31, we’ve outlined a number of local camps that will cater to all of your child’s interests — and even teach them a new skill or two! From sports camps to nature, science, art camps and more, our guide is a handy resource for keeping the kids happy and busy during summer vacation. So if you’re like my daughter and ready to shed that winter coat, there couldn’t be a better city to experience spring than Suwanee. While Suwanee is great in all seasons, there’s just something about spring, when the flowers start to bloom, the 5Ks kick back into high gear, and everyone enjoys the warmth of the sun once again.

Parc at Duluth residents have access to luxury apartments, firstclass dining, library, media center, fitness facility and more.

 Since 2003, Parc at Duluth’s residents have found comfort in this warm embrace of luxury. The independent living community has set the standard for senior living in the metro area, offering nearly 200,000 square feet of space that houses 170 apartments, a dining room and lounge, library, activity rooms, fitness facility, media center, and a large pool overlooking a beautiful courtyard. It’s a handsome building; its grandeur somewhat hidden from passersby driving down Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, which only adds to its charm. General Manager Tori Bowen-Smith, who oversees the day-to-day operations, greets residents by name as she leads guests down the hallway and up the elevator. This type of resident and employee familiarity should be the standard for all senior living communities, and it feels natural here, like longtime friends greeting each other in passing. "Trusting a community with your loved one or making the decision to move into a senior living community can be very difficult, but our mission is to break down

BUSINESS

that barrier and serve our community,” Bowen-Smith says. “We want families to know that they are not in this alone. There's a lot of life to be lived, and you can really maximize these golden years by being in a community that offers enriching programs and a family environment.”

A Culture of Caring

 Parc at Duluth offers two types of living options for its residents: independent living and assisted living. Independent living is for those residents who need little to no care. These are the residents who enjoy life in their apartment and are able to take advantage of Parc’s many amenities, such as enjoying meals in the dining room, taking part in activities like movie night and bingo, as well as perks such as housekeeping services. “Assisted living has the same options, so they have the opportunity to do the same things, but we also have care in place,” Bowen-Smith says. “We have a 24-hour nurse that is on site who assists with medication management, as well as nurses who are here 24/7 to assist with activities of daily living, such as helping residents get dressed, making sure that they're taking their medicine on time, that they're eating, and also making sure residents get out of their apartments and socialize.” Residents of Parc at Duluth enjoy all the comforts of home, while also experiencing the safety, security, and peace of mind that senior living

communities provide. The roomy one- and two-bedroom apartments include full kitchens, a washer and dryer, spacious closets, and soundresistant construction. In addition to the well-appointed apartment homes, residents are also surrounded by amenities that are similar to a luxury community or vacation resort. “We want to empower our residents to live better — that’s our mission,” Bowen-Smith says. “We want this season of life to be invigorating; we want it to be exciting and fulfilling. A lot of the time, residents are at home and they're by themselves. They don't have the opportunity to socialize. They don't have the opportunity to get out there, and there's so much fun to be had.”

Enriching Amenities

 Parc at Duluth features a number of amenities for its residents, including a media room, library, salon and fitness center. The most frequented, however, is the community’s regal dining room. The elegant space features a full-service, white tablecloth dining experience complete with a balcony overlooking the courtyard where residents can enjoy a chef-driven menu al fresco on a warm day. Across from the dining room there is a fashionable lounge with a bar and game-top tables where residents can relax with a drink and socialize before their meal. Separating the dining room and lounge is a beautiful grand piano that hosts live music on Fridays. In addition to the four-star dining experience, residents are also able to partake in fitness and wellness activities that are tailored to their individual level of ability, skill and goals. A standout feature of the community is the covered, heated pool, where residents can enjoy a water aerobics class during the warm months. “Our residents also enjoy outings, such as frequenting the restaurants in the Duluth area,” Bowen-Smith says. “They like

watching movies and playing bingo. Aside from that, they really enjoy the family atmosphere. They like the fact that we know their kids by name and that they can bring their dog by my office for a treat – it's just really a warm family atmosphere. And I think that's what makes the difference at Parc at Duluth. Yes, we have a beautiful building, but that's not what people remember. They remember that our staff is so loving and so caring to them. That’s what makes the difference.” The staff at Parc at Duluth goes above and beyond to make sure residents feel at home. By providing the highest level of service and care, they help families take comfort in the decision to trust them with their loved ones, while residents are able to truly enjoy this next phase of life. The golden years really are much brighter at Parc at Duluth. ■

INVESTMENT S T R AT E G I E S BY: Bill and Cindi Porter, AILERON INVESTMENT ADVISORS

Q&A

Q: SHOULD I STAY IN THE STOCK MARKET GIVEN THE RECENT SETBACKS?

Everyone’s situation is unique. One thing to consider is if your investments are long-term in nature. You are correct that the stock market has been very volatile lately. This is expected to happen from time to time. However, like an airplane dropping due to wind turbulence, it can make one feel a little unsettled. It is worth remembering that we experienced a similar event just about two years ago when COVID rocked the markets. On March 16, 2020, the S&P 500 dropped 12% in just one day.1 As of January 23, 2022, the S&P 500 is down 7.66% for the year 2022 and is now “down” to 4,410. Even though the market has recently pulled back, in less than two years, it has still nearly doubled from the March 2020 low. Yet it is not unusual to focus on recent drops in the market while forgetting about the growth period that preceded it. Staying the course is important because we do not know when the next up market will happen. In 2021, the S&P 500 recorded 68 new record highs as well as some reversals.2 Over the long haul those new highs are what build our portfolios. You have to be invested to capture those gains. Over the past 50 years, there were seven major down markets and dozens of other less severe setbacks. However, every market reversal was replaced by a new market high. Despite numerous problems, pull backs, and market reversals, a $10,000 investment in the S&P 500 in 1970, grew to $1,754,644 by the end of 2020.3 This is disciplined investing. It works. A conversation with your trusted advisor about your emotional risk tolerance and the requisite discipline required for long-term investments would be time well spent. ■ 1 https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/%5EGSPC/history?period1=1583798400&period2=1585180 800&inter val=1d&filter=history&frequency=1d&includeAdjustedClose=true 2 https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2021-12-26/2021-sp-500-performance# 3 https://www.franklintempleton.com/forms-literature/download/IBS-SIDFL – Why I should invest in the stock market now.

INVEST IN YOURSELF BY LEARNING A NEW HOBBY OR SKILL THIS YEAR. BY ALICIA CARTER 17

s parents, we are always looking for ways to keep our kids busy and involved. We want them to learn new sports, try out new hobbies and meet new friends. While it’s important for our children to be involved — there are plenty of educational, physical and emotional benefits — we should also dedicate some of that same energy to ourselves. Afterall, the same benefits that apply to our children also apply to us. Studies have shown that how you spend your leisure time can impact your health, and hobbies can be good for you in many ways, including improved health, lower stress and better sleep. Plus, adults who participate in hobbies and sports have been shown to generally just feel happier. And we all want that, right? Here, we’ve outlined six local businesses that offer classes and activities perfect for adults who want to learn a new skill. 18

She loves to snuggle on the couch with her family, enjoys belly and chin scratches, and enjoys playing soccer, too! She has a distinct pattern with three polka dots, a chocolate-dipped head, and floppy ears. Her family couldn’t love her more!

Kate Kate is an 8-month-old purebred golden retriever who comes from many generations of champions that were bred by responsible preservation breeders. Kate lives in Suwanee with Paul and Mary McElroy and her dog mom and sisters. Kate’s mother, Cadence, is an AKC breed champion and has performance titles in agility, dock diving and trick dog. Kate enjoys racing around the yard, wrestling with her 2-year-old dog sister, Hope, and snuggling on the couch. Kate started competing in conformation dog shows at 4 months old and has won several blue ribbons. The blue ribbons mean that she was the best example of what a golden retriever should be according to the breed standard. It also means that her conformation is correct which makes her less likely to be injured running full speed in the back yard or doing the dog sports that she loves. She will compete at the Lake Lanier Cluster Dog Shows at the Gwinnett Fairgrounds in April. Kate enjoys agility classes and she hopes to compete in agility someday.

Rip Rip is a 10-month-old Boston Terrier. Rip is full of energy, ears always alert, snorts and toots from sun up to sun down!

ADZK9S offers board and train services for off-leash obedience training, behavioral solutions for aggressive dogs, mobility service dog training, personal protection, and also has an extensive law enforcement program. Their 13,500-square-foot facility is located on 10 acres of land with a staff of 18 who care for the dogs and ensure the facility is always clean and safe for all breeds, no matter their age or size. ADZK9S also offers private and group lessons for those who have the time to train along with their dogs. “I was born and raised in Israel where incorporating discipline and communication is instilled from an early age,” Zohar says. “I’ve been working with dogs for 15 years now, and I am absolutely in love with seeing a dog progress and overcome challenges they were struggling with prior to training. We started this business with the sole purpose of improving dog owners' relationship with their pets. In order for one to enjoy the maximum potential of their pet, they must understand the value of proper communication. This is something that ADZK9S instills in the owners throughout our program.” Zohar offers three tips that all dog owners can incorporate when working with their pups.

1. WORK THAT RECALL

Recall is as simple as teaching your dog what their name means with a reward process. When calling your dog’s name, we want them to understand that coming back to you doesn’t mean the fun is over, but that the fun simply rests for a moment for some affection and engagement! Start off with a long leash and call your dog’s name. Once you see the dog is paying attention to their name, start rewarding them with a positive tone and affection. This will start your foundation for a proper recall and allow for an increase in distance.

2. SIT

Most people want to talk to a dog like a child, but you have to acknowledge that your dog doesn’t understand English! Teaching a dog a position is done through repetition and positive rewarding. If a dog is forced into a position, it will cause a level of confusion that will frustrate both you and the dog. Take your time when introducing a new command and make it as simple as possible. The command response is what we want to see when a dog understands the communication. There are many ways to teach a sit. One of the easiest ways is by luring with a treat or ball. Simply stand in front of your dog, hold the lure of choice over the head and give your “sit” command. Move the lure up and away from you and toward the dog’s back. This will make the dog’s butt touch the ground to allow their head to follow the lure. Head up, butt down! Once the dog sits, reward and praise. They will quickly pick up on the learning process and you’ll be able to remove the lure and make it a command base only.

3. HEEL

A dog is always looking for leadership. The natural reaction is to heel next to us and be a part of our pace. A leading dog is usually stressed out where a slow walker tends to lack confidence. When your dog trusts you and has a proper balance of relationship and communication, you will see a dog that walks calmly on the leash and wants to be as close as possible to you. I like starting “heels” with slow steps. This allows me to catch the mistakes much faster and more singularly. Every time the dog walks in the desired spot, I’ll mark it with praise and or reward. Pay the dog for every positive behavior! I reward the dog and this speeds the process of communication and achieving a goal. Once your dog understands what is asked of him or her, you will see how much harder they will work for your approval and affection. the community will celebrate the second anniversary of Cheers Day, a day dedicated to participating in random acts of kindness in memory of Adam Edge, who we sadly lost to cancer in 2020. Adam was a dear friend to many and a beloved member of our community who served as Suwanee’s Downtown Development Manager. Famous for his booming laugh, friends and family want to honor Adam's memory each year on his birthday, April 1, by filling the day with as much kindness as possible — a legacy fit for someone as special as Adam. ON APRIL 1, 2022,

Ways to Show Your Support

This year, in honor of what would have been Adam’s 40th birthday, Cheers Day organizers are asking for a $40 donation to one of a few worthy organizations that meant a lot to Adam.

Participation in Cheers Day is simple. The easiest way to show your support is to perform a random act of kindness on April 1. Perhaps it’s by purchasing coffee for the driver behind you in line at Starbucks. Or maybe it’s picking up a box of doughnuts for your co-workers on your way to the office. Plan ahead and clean out your closet and cabinets and then take a donation to North Gwinnett Co-op or another organization in need. It can even be as simple as calling

a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while or opening the door for a stranger. Simple acts of kindness like these can add up to make a big difference in our community. And that’s the point: Cheers Day is meant to add a little cheer to someone who might be in need. If you’d like to go a step further, consider giving $40 for 40. This year, in honor of what would have been Adam’s 40th birthday, Cheers Day organizers are asking for a $40 donation to one of a few worthy organizations that meant a lot to Adam, including:

Georgia College & State University Scholarship Adam was a proud first-generation college student who earned two degrees from Georgia College & State University. Georgia College was a special place for Adam, and his name will now forever hold a spot at his alma mater through this fund. Your donation will help future GCSU students fund their college education.

Suwanee Youth Leaders

Adam was a dedicated public servant, most recently serving as the Downtown Development Manager for the City of Suwanee. In this role, he was most known for his work mentoring high school sophomores and juniors through the Suwanee Youth Leaders program, which he helped create. Adam touched the lives of more than 300 students over the course of six years. Your donation will help fund an SYL project that will provide hands-on leadership experience for future generations.

Raise a Toast to Adam! ➽ SUWANEE’S HOMETOWN brewery, StillFire Brewing, is honoring Adam Edge’s legacy by brewing up a memorial beer that will benefit an organization near and dear to Adam’s heart. During the month of March, head over to StillFire Brewing and purchase a 4-pack of their Cheers to Adam Pale Ale. Brewed in honor of Adam, a portion of proceeds from each 4-pack will go to HomeFirst Gwinnett to help end homelessness in Gwinnett County. Adam passed away on March 25, 2020, shortly after the pandemic started, preventing a proper celebration of life to take place that year. To honor Adam’s memory and to give him the send-off he deserves, head over to StillFire Brewing on Thursday, March 31, from 5-8 p.m. for a Celebration of Life for Adam event. Come out and say "Cheers" to all of the good times we had with him. ⊲ StillFire Brewing is located at 343 US-23 in Suwanee, across from Town Center Park.

HomeFirst Gwinnett

HomeFirst Gwinnett is a nonprofit headed by Adam’s good friend Matt Elder, which seeks to develop a strategic, coordinated approach to addressing homelessness in Gwinnett County. Adam was so proud of the work that his friend was accomplishing in his adopted community. Your donation will help provide a variety of resources to those who are unsheltered.

Suwanee Elementary School

Adam loved to laugh and loved kids, and was a regular participant in the Gwinnett County Public Schools’ Principal for a Day program. He became a good friend and supporter of the work being done by Dr. Mary Taylor and her staff. Your donation will help fund a project for some really incredible kindergarten through fifth grade students. Whatever course you take, be sure to spread the love on social media on April 1 by sharing your random acts of kindness and encouraging others to do the same with the hashtags #CheersDay and #CheerstoAdam. A HORSE LOVER’S DREAM CAMP

VALLEY VIEW RANCH EQUESTRIAN CAMP FOR GIRLS TEACHES CAMPERS MORE THAN JUST HORSEBACK RIDING. THEY LEARN LIFE SKILLS THEY CAN CARRY WITH THEM FOREVER. By Angela Veugeler, Photos Courtesy Valley View Ranch Equestrian Camp UMMER CAMP is an opportunity for

kids to make new friendships, develop new skills, become more independent and confident, and make memories that will last a lifetime. Growing up, I was absolutely obsessed with horses. I was very fortunate to be able to take riding lessons near our home in Michigan and have the opportunity to attend a weeklong overnight horse camp during the summer, where my older cousin had gone for several years. I was only seven years old my first year as a camper there, and I still remember the name of the horses I rode each year. We put on a show for our parents at the end of the week and I remember getting to lead the drill team as we broke free of our side-by-side pinwheel formation and performed the next pattern on a bay Quarter horse named Kraut. I loved that horse and every horse I rode there, and I loved every minute of camp. It was one of the best experiences my parents could have given me growing up. Located on 600 acres atop Lookout Mountain in northwest Georgia, Valley View Ranch Equestrian Camp for Girls offers campers the full opportunity of horsemanship through instruction in the ring,

time in the saddle on trails, and the care and responsibility of having their very own horse. They offer the opportunity to participate in several riding styles: English and Hunt Seat, Western Stock Seat, Barrels and Gymkhana, Trails and Vaulting. At the end of the twoweek session, campers can show off their skills on horse show days. Advanced riders ride over fences on a cross-country course while Vally View Ranch Equestrian Camp for Girls offers campers the beginner and chance to care for their very own horse during camp. intermediate riders participate in a flat or jumping show in the ring. On rodeo day, campers dress up themselves and their horses and cheer each other on as they race against the clock to perform the tightest turn and compete for the fastest time. There are some

37

riders who may perform a synchronized riding drill team demonstration, and vaulters get to show off their newly acquired gymnastic techniques performed on horseback. While the focus is certainly horses, they also offer lots of recreational opportunities including eco-education, canoeing, swimming, crafts, pottery, archery, group games, theater and dance. Camp is available for girls ages 8-17 and enrollment is limited to 50 campers each week.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Established in 1954, Valley View Ranch was a cattle farm Jack and Olive Jones purchased with the dream of building an equestrian camp for their four daughters. The four sisters grew up at the camp and it is still owned and directed by one of the daughters, Nancy. Three generations of horse lovers manage Valley View Ranch, with several of the grandchildren helping to run the camp and manage the property. According to Valley View’s website, “Only women of high ideals, strength of personality, and integrity of character are chosen as counselors. Almost all of our counselors have come to VVR as campers and return year after year to carry on the legacy and traditions. One wrangler is assigned as the immediate counselor to a group of five girls, with at least two counselors in every bunkhouse. Naturally, the counselor who spends time with a group of girls has the opportunity to become well acquainted with them. She gains the friendship, admiration, and confidence of each girl. She is able, by example and advice, to encourage self-confidence and personal growth.”

A LASTING IMPACT

Kris Hall, a previous camper turned counselor, shared of her experience at Valley View growing up, “Lifelong friendships begin at Valley View Ranch! I attended VVR as a camper, and then worked as a counselor and program director for a total of 12 years as a child and young adult. It had such a positive and lasting impact on my life that I can't imagine not having this wonderful experience. As campers, girls

PARTY HACKS with Nat

NATALIE GARRETT Contributing Writer

Suwanee Magazine's official party queen shares insights on making your next event a smashing success!

EASTER EGG-CITEMENT! are getting longer, flowers are blossoming beautifully, and birds are beginning to sing their praises again. Spring is officially in the air! For many, Easter kicks off this glorious season of rising from the dark, cold winter and finally getting a taste of what’s ahead — that warm, beloved sunshine. If you’ve read any of my columns before, you can probably already imagine that I’m slightly obsessed with monogrammed Easter baskets, babies in bow ties and suspenders, and deviled eggs dyed pink, yellow, green, and blue (yes, been there, done that), but, for this issue I want to focus on highlighting one of the most fun aspects of celebrating this special holiday together. The egg-citement that can be seen only through our children’s eyes, even if our vision is blurred by the overload of pastels and Peeps! HE DAYS

Time to think outside of the egg! We all know the kiddos will be itching to jump out of their Sunday best and into the taunting field of plastic eggs, but consider incorporating a twist on the ceremonial hunt this year. While littles everywhere are eager to bust open each egg and discover the treasure it holds, there are some different ways to transition this age-old activity into an even more memorable one for your family. Check out these ideas to potentially peak the interest of your ´aster crew, including the older ones who might even become motivated to get back into the bunny business!

Hunters Come Out at Night

I tend to gravitate toward the glow-in-the-dark versions of games and activities… I suppose I have this notion that it can instantly add a bit of thrill? I mean, what could be more egg-citing than getting to stay up past your bedtime awaiting sundown, just so you can run wild into the night searching for illuminated prizes? If you opt for the miniature-sized glow sticks, they should fit comfortably into Easter eggs with room to spare for a small piece of candy. Win-win!

Color Coded Favorites

Aside from the fact that color coding makes my heart happy no matter the task at hand, I think it would turn this occasion into one that the entire family could enjoy. By assigning each person their own egg color, you’re not only leveling up the challenge a bit as each person is seeking out their dedicated loot, but it serves as the optimal chance to personalize the goodies inside. For example — blue could be Dad’s color, filled with those oh-so-hopeful lottery tickets. Purple could be for Mom, reserved with her favorite gourmet candy that she is most certainly not obligated to share. Green could be allocated to the unenthusiastic teenager who would probably be willing to change his or her mind when they unexpectedly open some cash. Pink could be for the ultimate girly girl, adorned with assorted bottles of nail polish. Yellow could be for the energetic boy, stuffed with Hot Wheels that are ready to burn up the track. There’s truly something for everyone if you go this route!

way, I recommend having enough people who can turn this into a competition. First, you’ll need two sets of Easter eggs and designated areas to keep the sets separated. Next, choose the brain buster you want to serve as the object of the game. This could be anything Easter related, such as a Bible scripture, poem, brain teaser, funny joke, etc. Print out your brain buster and cut individual pieces, breaking it up into single words (or phrases if you choose longer content). Insert each slice of the puzzle into an egg and then distribute them randomly throughout the hunting space so they’re all mixed up. Now, the race begins! Allow each team to collect all of the eggs from their allotted area. Once they've retrieved all of their eggs, they must hurry to unscramble the words or phrases and figure out the correct order so they can read it from beginning to end. The first team to correctly reveal the secret brain buster wins the golden egg, which is the grand prize!

Everyone’s Easter celebration is unique to their beliefs and traditions with loved ones. For our family, Easter Sunday always begins with church, followed by an afternoon field day. Playing games is a prioritized pastime in my husband’s family, so it’s a requirement to bring a change of clothes, tennis shoes, and an open mind in order to adequately prepare for the unknown ahead… only after we indulge in a scrumptious outdoor picnic, of course. So, whatever your Easter fellowship looks like and whichever egg hunt you choose, it’s sure to be well spent if you slow down and appreciate what the day means to you and yours. ■

FAMILY MAT TERS Jennifer Wilmoth, LMFT, Thrive Forward Therapy

Are you teaching your kids self-care? is often misunderstood. It is sometimes seen as self-indulgent or selfish to focus on what you need but it can actually be one of the best ways to care for yourself and your family. Self-care is much more than taking an occasional bubble bath or bingewatching your favorite show after a difficult day. Instead, it is creating a routine and rhythm of taking care of yourself and your family in all areas of health including physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, social, and professional/ academics. You can recognize quality self-care by the way it builds up to good health over time such as taking breaks when studying, walking in the evenings, or reflecting on the day together at family dinner time. Prioritizing self-care can be a game-changer for anyone but especially kids and teens. The habits and routines kids establish when they are young often stay with them throughout their life. Here are some tips to help you teach your kids the importance of self-care and make it a regular part of your day. SELF-CARE

times of self-care into your existing family routine; it doesn’t have to take hours to be helpful. You could add a few self-care times in the day such as a quick stretch in the morning, listening to inspiring music, praying, or communicating how you feel. Bedtime can be a great time for kids to snuggle up with you for a moment and share how they are feeling; what they are concerned or excited about. Just as your family brushing their teeth daily adds up to better physical health, the whole family caring for their minds and relationships adds up to better mental health and can even help with depression and anxiety.

Take a break: Reaching goals and making

progress can be really exciting for kids and parents, but when progress is not balanced with rest it can be damaging to our health. Try encouraging breaks

by suggesting a nap after practice, a study break to talk with a friend, a break from technology to take a walk or play outside, or developing a relaxing bedtime routine to get 8-10 hours of sleep a night.

Be proactive: Don’t wait until your kids are

feeling overwhelmed or stressed to start self-care, instead go ahead and put a routine in place so it is well established when stressful situations happen. Regular psychological and emotional self-care is a great way to keep your kid’s mind calm, relaxed, and prepared to cope with life difficulties such as a friend ignoring them or getting a bad grade on a test.

Self-care can be a fun and relaxing part of your daily routine and over time can add up to better overall health. Check out our resource page for more tips and resources to make self-care a regular part of your routine at thriveforwardtherapy.com/selfcare. ■

The co-owners, Rutesh and Girish Shah, are a brother duo who have worked hard to make their franchise feel more like a family-owned mom-andpop shop. When stepping foot inside the restaurant you will most likely see Rutesh or Girish, or maybe both! One thing is certain, you will be served like you are a part of their family. The Shahs are active members of the Suwanee community and often sponsor local youth sports teams. Their generosity is genuine and can be felt not only by their customers but by their employees as well. "I have the greatest people working for me. Suwanee's local Schlotzsky's Deli has served comfort food that gives each customer a "mouthful of flavor" since 2013. The chain identifies as deliberate food instead of fast food because they offer fresh-fromscratch baked bread, fresh vegetables, quality meat, and gluten-free options. The menu offers a wide selection of soups, salads, sandwiches, pizzas and flatbreads, and the worldrenowned Cinnabon.TM The restaurant has both a drive-through and inside dining. The cozy dining room features open space with plenty of seating and inviting colors where families can enjoy lunch, dinner, or a midday snack. Those looking for lighter fare should try one of Schlotzsky's fresh tossed salads or savory soups. Here at Suwanee Magazine, our go-to orders are the turkey avocado cobb salad and tomato basil soup. The turkey avocado cobb salad is made with mixed field greens and romaine, roasted turkey, bacon, goat cheese, avocado, egg, and so much more. This refreshing salad can be perfectly paired with the tomato basil soup, which is made with fresh, ripe tomatoes, basil, and onions blended into a smooth,

creamy soup that’s topped with basil and parmesan cheese. You can easily enjoy this combination with the Pick Two offer, where you can mix and match any pair of entrées. Those looking for a more filling meal should try a flavorpacked sandwich or gourmet pizza/flatbread. One of our fanfavorite pizzas is the California chicken pizza. Customers can choose to enjoy it on a sourdough crust or artisan flatbread, topped with hand-carved chicken, bacon, mozzerella and cheddar cheeses, roasted red peppers, avocado, and chipotle mayo. Gluten-free crusts are available and highly delicious!

A pro tip when eating at Schlotzsky's: Always save room for dessert. Schlotzsky's has several dessert options including fresh brownies, chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies and, of course, Cinnabon.TM It's a difficult decision choosing just one dessert but we can't write this without talking about Cinnabon's Center of the Roll.TM The Center of the RollTM is just that, the center of a cinnamon roll, which is undoubtedly the best part. It's the ooey-gooey,TM warm center that is the perfect ending to your meal. When asked what the most rewarding aspect of owning Schlotzsky's Deli is, Rutesh refers back to the Suwanee community. “Being able to offer quick, healthier options to good people feels great,” he says. “Suwanee is a great place to own a business.” ■

StilFire Brewing Brew Master Phil Farrell

THE TALE OF THE RUBBER CHICKEN THAT FLEW AROUND THE BEER WORLD By Phil Farrell, Brew Master StillFire Brewing

HOW A RUBBER CHICKEN CAME TO BE HELD BY SOME OF THE BEST BREWERS AND ENTHUSIASTS IN THE WORLD. name is Phil Farrell and I will forever be a homebrewer. I was also a military and commercial pilot. The Beer Bug bit me long before Craft Beer was a major “thing” and before I ever homebrewed. I left active duty with the Air Force in 1987, was hired by Delta Air Lines, joined the AF Reserve, and settled in New Orleans to and layovers around brew pubs, beer work both jobs. I helped someone homebrew once in Arizona festivals, and beer dinners in the in 1984 and helped several people brew in their kitchens in '80s, but by 1995, it was routine. I met Myrtle Beach and New Orleans, however it was clear to me pioneers in the craft beer world before I had a lot to learn. I was always drawn to they became household the more unusual flavors that small regional names. I could now breweries and imported beers had. FOOD & DRINK Left: Fritz Maytag of Anchor Brewing, considered the father of modern microbreweries. Middle: Charlie Papazian founder of the Association of Brewers, the Great American Beer Festival, and author of The Complete Joy of Home Brewing with Sam Calagione, the founder of Dogfish Head brewery. Bottom: Farrell with John Meyer of Rogue Brewing.

New Orleans left an impression on me – always be ready for a party. Every Krewe had a mascot, and it seemed logical to me that when I saw a plucked rubber chicken in a novelty store that CCAR had its mascot. Chicken duties were pretty simple. I would waive the chicken over the beer and like magic, the new batch was better than the last one. The good mojo the chicken contained kept us out of trouble on brew day. That chicken never made it out of Northern Georgia as it only went to club meetings and club brewing days. It was not a true traveler. It lasted a couple of years only to be ripped to pieces by a couple of kids at the annual Club Oktoberfest like Stretch Armstrong at a Medieval Renaissance Fair. It had served its purpose though. It “helped” me win two medals at the National Homebrew Conference in Las Vegas in 2004. By the way, its LEGacy lived on as a tap handle that Nick Floyd of 3 Floyds Brewing once used to pour Dark Lord out of. I drove out to Baltimore in 2005 for that year’s AHA HB Convention, now known as Homebrew Con. While I was driving, I realized I had the replacement rubber chicken in my trunk, so I "hatched" a plan. We had taken our chicken to local breweries as a drinking buddy, however there had been no effort to channel mojo. At this convention were going to be some of the best brewers and enthusiasts in the country, so I was going to take advantage of it. I was going to take the chicken to everyone with any beer horsepower, let them hold the mascot, and channel all their mojo. It was working as planned until I reached my ultimate target, Charlie Papazian, the OG of homebrewing and craft beer. We were going to channel Charlie’s 1.21 Gigawatts of Brewer’s Association, Complete Joy of Homebrewing, and Great American Beer Festival Mojo into a single rubber chicken. A funny thing happened, though. Charlie asked me, “Who is going to know I held the chicken?” I hadn’t thought past stealing the mojo part. Charlie, having a love of photography (after beer), told me I had to snap a photo for proof of contact or else the mojo wasn’t valid. It was at that point Charlie gifted me the missing piece of what became a decades long quest to unite the craft beer world with a $7.50 rubber chicken and a camera. I shot that first chicken photo and it became an instant hit. Better yet, it kicked the door open to go on a marathon through the beer world. I collected chicken photos of Sam Calagione, Ray Daniels, and Randy Mosher that weekend as well as most of the award-winning homebrewers in 2005. Once I took the rubber chicken on my trips with me, I would make it a goal to collect iconic photos of the most famous people in craft beer I could find. I would ask people to pose for a photo that represented them and their brewery. Often, the entire staff would pose. It rarely happened, but occasionally someone was a little camera shy or wasn’t sure about taking photos with a chicken. My go-to move was always the original photo of Charlie I carried with me to bust out for situations like that. Charlie cradling the rubber chicken in his arms while grinning

from ear to ear like the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland was the universal pass key for every brewery. I specifically traveled to beer towns on trips such as Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, San Diego, Anchorage, Chicago and both Portland’s (OR and ME) to start my collection of chicken photos. On the “hobby” side of things, I became a Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) judge, later becoming the SE Regional Rep and the VP of the organization. I volunteered at both the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Fest (GABF) as staff, and now routinely judge at both contests. I was elected to the Board of Governors of the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) and was Wynkoop Brewing’s Beer Drinker of the Year in 2011, so I had inside access to a lot of events and gatherings that I might have otherwise missed. The late great Michael Jackson, The Beer Hunter, the best known beer writer the world In other words, I has known. Jackson's books have sold over was as inside the three million copies worldwide and have been translated into eighteen languages. He is craft beer world credited with helping to start a renaissance of as you could be interest in beer and breweries worldwide in without brewing at the 1970s. a brewery. Before there were smartphones and instant wireless connectivity to social media, I carried around a scrapbook of photos, an old-school digital camera and a rubber chicken. It became the worst-kept inside secret in craft beer. Some photos were all my making while others were people grabbing friends to be initiated into the club with a chicken photo. There were a couple of photo bombs but for the most part these were all posed photos of people related to beer. After that initial Charlie photo, one of my favorite photos was of Charlie “getting caught” taking a photo of me with the rubber chicken. That was in Denver in 2007 at the AHA Convention and you must keep in mind I was exclusively taking photos of other people for years, so there were almost no photos of me with the chicken because this wasn’t about me, and traditional cameras had no selfie mode. The photo caught us after Charlie asked me: “Hey Chickenman—I need a photo of you with the chicken.” I was already “Chickenman” to many people, but with Charlie’s affirmation, I forever wore Chickenman as a beer badge of honor. Most of all I love our expressions in that photo that seemed to indicate we were caught doing something we shouldn’t be doing.

After a red-white-and-blue detour last summer, the 11th annual Suwanee American Craft Beer Fest makes its return to Town Center Park on Saturday, March 19, 2022, to reclaim its title as the best St. Patrick’s Day weekend party in Gwinnett. The festival, which draws more than 6,000 thirsty beer lovers from around the country, has grown into Gwinnett’s premier craft beer festival, as well as one of the most anticipated events of the year. It’s no wonder USA Today named Suwanee Beer Fest as one of the 10 Best Beer Festivals in the U.S. Each year, event organizers line up an impressive selection of craft beers from around the country, and this year, festival attendees will once again line up to sample more than 350 craft beers, with many new breweries m ak ing t heir b eer f es t i v al d e b u t .

impressive than the selection of beer is that the Suwanee Beer Fest team is always looking for ways to improve the festival experience for attendees. Last year, the team weathered the storm of the pandemic and made the best of the situation by pivoting to a summertime date and patriotic theme. They also added giant beer pong and axe throwing to the list of festival games, which turned out to be new fan favorites. This year, they’re dialing it up a notch by inserting an old-school arcade smack dab in the middle of the festival. Beer and video games?! Excellent! In addition, Suwanee Beer Fest has also organized an amazing lineup of musical entertainment, shopping, and food vendors. Not a fan of beer? No problem. Attendees can also enjoy samples from White Claw Hard Seltzer, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, and select spirits from Sugar Hill Distillery, along with ready-to-drink cocktails, seltzers, meads, ciders, wine and kombucha. Consider the next few pages your handy guide to Suwanee Beer Fest, a festival made for beer lovers by beer lovers.

It all started with brewing beer together on Monday nights in 2006. Friends, neighbors, and random strangers came together to brew and commune together. The beer quickly became more than just a weeknight hobby. Back in their homebrewing days, the three founders had white-collar day jobs. They wore neckties to work and would ceremoniously loosen their ties on Monday evenings before brewing each week's batch of beer. The loosened necktie has remained with them as a symbol of doing what you love with your career, and making every day (not just weekends) exceptional. They are based in Atlanta with two taprooms. Additional taprooms have opened in both Birmingham and Nashville.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU OR LED YOU TO YOUR CURRENT CAREER? I have been playing tennis since the age of 8 and fell in love with it. I got a scholarship to the University of Alabama in Birmingham and have

been able to travel the country, playing in tournaments. I love coaching and kids and after injuring my shoulder, I decided that coaching is what I want to do for the rest of my life. If I can teach the sport and share my passion for it, people can learn and play forever! My dad is 89 years old and plays six times a week, and he didn’t start playing until he retired from work at 65. Tennis is about having fun, making friends and getting exercise. I love working with adults and kids and seeing them catch the bug of tennis! I started Champ Tennis Academy 15 years ago to establish a group of aspiring tennis players who would train and then compete together. I decided to start a charity called Create the Big Pic 11 years ago, realizing that I especially wanted to help kids who are under-privileged as well as having the kids I coach be part of that, too. We started holding clinics in Atlanta and other areas where kids would have never had the opportunity to play and started raising money to hold what I call “field days” that include not only tennis, but other sports and activities. We joined forces with the Friends of Refugees school in Clarkston and had more than 300 kids come out! This has provided me with a sense of greater purpose and I love sharing that with my students as well. We are holding our fourth annual Charity tennis event in August with an exhibition of professional players. We would like to spread the word and get more people involved and be part of the field days. We love making a difference and believe that the people who are involved feel good about our cause and how they contribute to it. We give to a variety of charities, from animal rescues to cystic fibrosis and others.

THE BUZZ

Tennis is about having fun, making friends and getting exercise. I love working with adults and kids and seeing them catch the bug of tennis! - Rosey Lee, Champ Tennis Academy

HOW HAS YOUR BUSINESS BEEN AFFECTED BY THE PANDEMIC? We definitely had

to adjust to having many more students. People came out of the woodwork to get outside and do something fun. It’s easy to stay socially distanced with tennis. I had to hire more coaches and redesign my drills to keep space between my students in order to keep them safe.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN SUWANEE AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE THERE? Tequila Mama is a

favorite. The fried avocado is so good! I also love the atmosphere.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED OR LIVED IN SUWANEE? I am originally

from New Jersey and my family migrated here. I have lived in Suwanee since 2000.

WHAT HAS KEPT YOU HERE?

I love the community here and raising my kids here. It’s nice to go into Riverside Elementary and know a lot of the teachers.

HOW BIG IS YOUR FAMILY?

I have a wife, four children, three rescue dogs, a bearded dragon and a fish.

WHO IS THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON YOU’VE MET IN SUWANEE? One of my students, Ali Jamal, who currently lives in Suwanee wrote

an awesome book, Can-Do Real Estate. He is interested in learning about his past to present and how philanthropy plays a role in his current success.

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, WHERE WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I love hiking, so I would definitely like to do the twoweek trek in Machu Picchu, Peru.

WHAT IS THE FIRST MOVIE YOU REMEMBER SEEING IN A THEATER? I would say 101 Dalmatians.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A CROWD OF PEOPLE? I would

say to be open to new experiences and meeting new people. I think we all have the tendency to be too guarded. Say no to nothing — except drugs!

WHAT IS SOMETHING ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? I want to set up

tennis/sports camps in Africa and give kids there a chance to learn a sport.

IF YOU COULD TAKE ANYONE TO LUNCH (DEAD OR ALIVE) WHO WOULD THAT BE? Nelson Mandela or the Dalai Lama.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC? NAME THREE BANDS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE. I love all

types of music. I would love to have seen Bob Marley, The Cure and Missy Higgins.

WHAT LOCAL BUSINESS MAKES YOU THE MOST NOSTALGIC ABOUT SUWANEE? It would have

to be Town Center Park. We have great memories there riding bikes, watching movies under the stars, concerts, festivals, etc.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SUWANEE? I love the parks and trails. We bike ride and take the kids and dogs to some of the dog parks. We love the parks and recreation here.

WOULD YOU RATHER SPEAK TO A CROWD OF 500 OR SING TO A CROWD OF 50? Definitely speak! WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS? I hope to still have a hand in my tennis academy. I have taught so many kids who are now grown and getting married. I hope I will be able to coach for many years to come. I hope my legacy will live on.

WHAT IS SOMETHING INTERESTING THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU? I am a shy person and

sometimes feel socially awkward, but on the tennis court, I feel most alive and at home. I love what I do and would love to inspire more people to get involved. My students are my family. ■

SOAK IN THE SUN AND THE FUN IN SUGAR HILL PHOTOS COURTESY CITY OF SUGAR HILL

e’re saying goodbye to our ice skates and winter coats and hello to flip-flops and swimsuits! Warm weather is

arriving soon in Georgia, and we can’t wait to start soaking in the sun at our favorite spots in Sugar Hill. No matter what day you find yourself strolling around Sugar Hill, you’re guaranteed a day filled with things to do, people to see and places to eat, especially when it’s warm outside. Pick and choose your daily excursions. Come to the downtown area to eat and hang out or to sing along to your favorite band at The Bowl. Whatever the occasion, be sure to explore the city by taking a walk along the Promenade with an ice cream cone from Scoops or ride your bike to the Sugar Hill Greenway for six miles of trails, soon to be more. Keep an eye out for the city’s event line-up because there’s always something new and exciting happening on the hill where the sugar spilled. Spending the daytime in Sugar Hill calls for a pastry and coffee from Rivermill Bakery or Rushing Trading Co., followed by viewing the newest exhibit at the Art Gallery and History Museum. Learn a few fun facts about this sweet city, then go across the street to the Eagle Theatre for the $2 Tuesday series. Catch Knives Out on March 8 and WALL-E

on April 12. You don’t want to miss seeing a movie at the theatre, especially when tickets are only $2. Did we mention the seats are comfy and there’s movie theatre buttered popcorn at the concession stand? Yeah, you definitely don’t want to miss it! Choose from two showings: 10:30a.m. and 6:30p.m. For tickets, visit EagleatSugarHill.com. Nighttime in downtown is all about the bright, sparkling lights, a beer at Indio Brewing, and seeing a live performance at The Bowl. The Bowl will continue to bring in a variety of acts and performances for community-wide entertainment for its upcoming eighth concert season in 2022. The city will announce this year’s Sugar Hill Live on Stage line-up before you know it! Visit TheBowlatSugarHill.com or follow them on social media @thebowlatsugarhill to be the first to know who’s performing next. While Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo don’t perform here every Friday, Sugar Hill Live is one way to enjoy live music in downtown. Grab your meal and seat yourself at one of the many tables and cushy chairs on the Promenade and listen to local bands perform every other Wednesday. Day or night, whether there’s warm or cold weather, Sugar Hill is the perfect place to make plans for every moment of the week. ■
