10 minutes with... Natasha Hutchins from NH Patterns Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into hand-drafting sewing patterns? I started my clothing brand while I was studying fashion design at university. I was quite the beginner back then and started looking for sewing patterns online. I found it so difficult to find patterns that were ontrend and the style I wanted to wear. So, as I learned more and more about pattern cutting throughout the course, I started to make my own patterns and develop my skills. Over time, I realised how many people wanted to have a go sewing their own pieces and loved my styles, so I started NH patterns to make my patterns available to everyone! Who do you think is the main audience for your style of patterns? There’s quite a mix really, I’d say generally they attract sewers in their late teens through to late 20s. I also allow my sewing patterns to be used for people sewing for their small businesses (home-based sewers) so there’s quite a few people there that are looking to kickstart a handmade sewing business!

Tell us three fun facts about yourself I have a Bengal cat called Floki. He is my boss and tells me when it’s time to finish work for the day! I started my university course seven years ago, and before I’d never pattern cut or sewn anything before! Except for a skirt that I made in school, which by the way, was awful! I love crime shows. Almost any kind! I watch them while I work and I’m currently watching the entire Silent Witness series!

NH Patterns www.nhpatterns.com

How many patterns have you released, and what is your favourite so far? So far, I have 11 patterns available (and 10 more in the design that I’m working on). My favourite to wear is the Ember trousers, the wide leg, comfy style is perfect for so many occasions. My favourite to sew is the Ellie bralet (also my most popular pattern!). It’s so easy and quick to make. I can sew a bralet in around 15 mins now! Who inspires your designs? I get a lot of inspiration from Pinterest, bloggers, and Instagram. I’ll see designs that I like and adapt and design from that until I’ve come up with something I would like to wear!

Lovingly refashioned! Having old clothes that you don’t wear is like having an additional stash of fabric for sewing!

Has your time in lockdown made you think about what really matters? If you’ve spent time going through your wardrobe and thought to yourself I would wear that if only it had sleeves, it was longer or it didn’t have a rip? Now is the time to refashion or make do and mend! The Make Do and Mend movement was intended to provide housewives, during World War 2, with useful tips on how to be frugal and stylish in times of rationing. With its thrifty ideas on reusing old clothing, the leaflet became an indispensable guide, while people couldn't buy new things (sound familiar?).

Should I mend it? Ask yourself a few questions and be honest with your answers; ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Do you love the garment? How long will it take to fix? Have I got what I need to mend it? Is the rest of the garment in good condition?

"

ON THE MEND!

One idea for repairing is visible mending. This has become a really popular trend and is easy to do on small areas that need a little tlc such as a tear or stain. Hand stitching is perfect for repairing wear and tear on denim. All you need is a thick embroidery needle and some embroidery floss or Sashiko thread. Basic stitches like running stitch, whipstitch and blind hemstitch are ideal.

Hand stitching is associated with the release of serotonin in the brain so it makes you feel good too!

"

RE-PURPOSE Use your sewing skills to turn an old garment into something new. 2 ways to utilise old clothes: ♥ Refashion the garment with a few alterations like shortening the sleeves, adding a belt or changing the neckline. ♥ Use the fabric to cut out a pattern to make a new garment. Men’s shirts are a great source of cotton fabric. www.thepatternpages.com

print & ASSEMBLE

A re-cap into how to make working with pdf sewing patterns a breeze while in lockdown!

Continue to sew during lockdown with digital (PDF) sewing pattern that offer sewers an instant download! These patterns are often a little cheaper but can be a little daunting when you are presented with lots of tiled sheets of paper that have to be stuck together to make up a full-size pattern.

12 | www.thepatternpages.com

HERE ARE A FEW OF OUR TOP TIPS TO GETTING IT RIGHT:

1

PRINTING AT HOME

Once you’ve downloaded your sewing pattern, you will need to select A4 to print it out to scale at home. Click on the pattern pdf, and bring up the print menu making sure you tick the box that says print actual size. Print your patterns in draft to save your printers ink. They’re still readable but print out much quickly and the ink dries sooner.

2

ASSEMBLY

The pattern instructions will inform you exactly how to put the pattern pages together. On our patterns, you will find a diamond that needs matching up on each tiled page. The pattern sheets are numbered to help you put them together. Some patterns can come trimless, and some you may need to trim off any excess blank borders or with ours, you can just fold these pieces out of the way

TIP

PDF patterns come with a test square – shown here on our Alder Dress. Print this page off first and measure this box to check that you’re printing out the right size.

: We use tiny pieces of transparent tape to stick pattern pieces together so you can join and see the print under the tape. A tape dispenser is very useful and leaves both hands free to line up your pattern pieces. Once you’ve mastered the art on putting these together, it really doesn’t take very long at all. A pdf sewing pattern with 24 pieces can be put together in less than 20 minutes and then just needs cutting out as normal.

TIP

TIP

: When downloading your pattern, remember to save and store it somewhere safely on your computer. There’s nothing worst than downloading it and then not being able to find it. We have a folder on our computer where we save by company and pattern name so they are always easy to find!

3

: We use A4 brown envelopes to store our cut out sewing patterns. Why not print out the first pattern of the instructions and stick the envelope front. If you have a dedicated sewing area, you can hang up and store on a rail with pattern hooks.

INSTRUCTIONS It’s not necessary to print out the instructions – we find it’s so much easier to have them on a tablet next to your sewing machine and of course, also save paper and the planet! www.thepatternpages.com

SMOOTH g n i w se What to do when your sewing machine isn’t cooperating!

You can encounter lots of problems when using your sewing machine that can be frustrating especially in lockdown! Here are six common problems that are easily resolved with a little know-how!

4

1

NEEDLE COMES UNTHREADED BEFORE YOU GET TO SEW

SEAMS ARE PUCKERED

Firstly check that you’re using the correct weight of the thread. A too-thicker thread can distort lightweight fabrics, and a too-lighter thread can cause tension problems. Also check for uneven feed – is your presser foot pressure correct, and the feed dogs working correctly? If not, try using a walking foot for an even feed on slippery or heavier weight fabrics.

There’s a really easy fix for this. Before threading your machine, make sure that the needle is at its highest point. You can do this by winding the wheel by hand towards yourself or most machines now have an ‘up/ down’ function that allows you to raise or lower the needle to its highest or lowest point.

2

YOUR MACHINE IS SKIPPING STITCHES

There are lots of reasons this happens. It means the top thread is not reaching the bobbin, and the threads aren’t interlocking and resulting in skipped stitches. Check that your needle has been installed correctly, and that you're using the right needle for your sewing project. Re-thread your machine – both top and bobbin threads. In most cases, this will fix the problem.

MACHINE IS MAKING A CLUNKING NOISE! If you hear this horrible noise stop sewing immediately! Your machine may be in need of a good clean and oil. To do this, refer to your machine’s instruction manual or visit our Learn to Sew page - click here. We also rethread our sewing machine too – just to be sure!

5

THREADS ARE BREAKING

6

FABRIC AND THREADS BUNCH AT THE START OR END OF YOUR SEAM

If your thread look frayed – your needle and thread probably are not compatible and your need may not be larger enough for the thread to pass through the eye without catching.

This can happen when you backstitch over the ends of the fabric. To avoid this happening, start sewing a few more millimetres into your fabric before starting to backstitch so the backstitches are not on the edge of your fabric. Do the same at the end of your seam. www.thepatternpages.com

Putting fashion BACK INTO SEWING

We chat with Isabelle Finet and Teresa Bosteels from Fibre Mood who took control of their passion for designing stylish patterns for every Sewista Tell us a little bit about who is behind the Fibre Mood pattern magazine and how it all started? It started when I came up with the idea for La Maison Victor in 2012. I noticed a lot of young woman buying sewing machines, but missing out on modern sewing patterns and good explanations. Together with editor Sanoma, Teresa and I launched La Maison Victor magazine, and it was an instant success. In 2017, the publisher was selling off some of the magazine titles. We were afraid of loosing the magazine, so we asked to buy back the concept and title via a management buy out but unfortunately the answer was no, and it was sold off. Out of our grief came the strength to start over! We both felt our story wasn’t finished and we were lucky enough that the team behind La Maison Victor followed us! It was an incredible time, pioneering with no money. We had more than 60 people helping us with their professional skills and experience to make Fibre Mood real! Fibre Mood is now 18 months on and we’re on ninth edition! We now have more than 38,000 followers on Instagram, welcome over 50,000 people to our community and have subscribers in 27 countries. It has been such an incredible adventure, and we’re so so grateful that so many people were so brave to help our crazy story come true! Teresa and I say it almost every day that we’re so thankful we have such a great team behind us.

Who designs and influences the sewing patterns? That’s Teresa! She’s fascinated by colours, forms and materials, and absorbs literally everything! She’s researching all the time, and watching what’s happening on the streets, in the cities, on the catwalks, and in the world! What’s trending and what is most likely to become a trend? She loves to design patterns for clothes that are within everyone’s reach, that were too exclusive, too expensive, or only from big designers.

How often is a new issue released? Every two to three months, which equates to five Fibre Mood pattern magazines a year. We publish in Dutch, French, English, German and Spanish.

What makes you sewing patterns different from other indie patterns? We focus on urban street style, contemporary and sometimes more classics but we always add a twist! We always take into account different body types offering so every woman can build her own stylish wardrobe based on her body shape. Every

24 | www.thepatternpages.com

pattern is high quality with lots of technical information, as well as clear instructions with drawings, and if needed videos. We like to give style advice for ever body shape, plus tips how to personalise the pattern and to adjust it. It’s also important to us to show our patterns on different models and different ages etc. Another big difference is how we interact with our community of Sewistas. There really is an active interchange between everybody. Sometimes I see a pattern made by a sewist and I immediately think hey, I want to make it myself!

What sort of sewer is the pattern brand aimed at? With every edition, we have patterns from beginners to experts. We try to convince beginners to start with Fibre Mood since our explanations are very simple to understand, but at the same time, we help sewers get to the technical level! More experienced sewers can learn how to finish garment more neatly than real beginners. Our patterns are from size 32-58 (EUR) or 4-30 (UK) or 0-26 (US). Some models with a loose or oversized fit go from XS –XXXL, which includes 32-60 (EUR)/ 4-32 (UK)/ 0-28 (US). Children’s patterns go from two to 14 years old, and baby’s from one to eight months. We have patterns for men from XL-XXL

Can you buy patterns separately from the magazine? Yes! Every pattern is available as a pdf pattern. You can buy the whole magazine, or for those who just don’t like to trace and wants seam allowances included, they can just print the pdf pattern at home, or in the copy shop. We also have paper patterns from our evergreens. These are patterns that are very popular. We print every pattern piece next to the other so it’s easy to trace. These are becoming very popular. I prefer the magazine for the images and I like to print the pdf patterns with seam allowances. With two toddlers at home, this gives me the most comfort.

Tell us a bit about how sewists can get involved with the Fibre Mood community? Yes, indeed. Fibre Mood built a strong community in very short time and to be honest, I’m very proud of every single sewist! It is up to each sewist how much they want to be involved. Some are very active, and share everything they make, while others are shy, and just see what others are making and get inspired. Personally I’m shy, so you will rarely see something from me, although I’m always sewing and wearing proudly clothes from Fibre Mood! We organise a lot of competitions where connection is very important. At the moment, we are organizing the Social Sew Along on Instagram Live in five languages. People are just so lovely and happy to share their passion with others in the same situation. Very soon, we will start the Dress My Window campaign where we ask sewers to collaborate with their shop owners, and win a year’s subscription while the shop owner receives the original clothes of Fibre Mood, just buy making a very nice window with a dress of Fibre Mood. Another campaign is the Sewista World Tour this summer. Since nobody can go on holiday, we invite sewers worldwide to show an interesting spot in their neighbourhood, of course wearing clothes from Fibre Mood and post it on our website. I like the humour, the joy and the passion in our community!

RAYON This fabric is becoming increasingly popular with dressmakers. Here are our tips for making sewing with it a breeze!

WHAT IS RAYON? Rayon is a fabric made of cellulose from plant sources including wood pulp. While the fibre itself comes from natural sources, it’s chemical processing puts it between the natural and synthetic worlds. Originally known as viscose, rayon is cool to wear and retains its shape, creases drop out easily and it has the best drape ever! Rayon is extremely soft to the touch and is suitable for garments with floaty silhouettes such as wide-leg trousers, A-line skirts, summer dresses and oversized shirts. What we like about this fabric is, there’s no build up static electricity! That’s all very positive but because of this rayon has the slipperiness of nylon, and can be difficult to sew. However with a few techniques you can get best results. 26 |the www.thepatternpages.com

This shirt is made with using the Blair sewing pattern from Named Clothing and Mariner striped fabric from Art Gallery Fabrics

CHOOSE A GOOD QUALITY FABRIC Like most fabric types, there is good and bad to be found. There are quite a few different rayons – some are thicker with a smooth hand, while others are very thin and snag easily and can be difficult to cut. Rayon Challis is probably the easiest to work with. Art Gallery Fabrics has a really good selection of rayon and many of its collection now contain a rayon option. They come in plains, stripes and beautiful prints. We recently used Winterberry Pine from Amy Sinbaldi’s Little Town collection for last issue’s Tilia Top. It was an absolute joy to work with! Other fabric companies that have a good range of rayon fabric include Cotton + Steel, Modelo and Cloud9 launches its own rayon range this August.

PRE-WASH Rayon is colourfast but is susceptible to shrinking. Pre-wash your rayon and wash on a warm temperature, and dry on a medium heat. The shirt shown on the left has been made with Mariner striped fabric from Art Gallery Fabrics. Find a UK stockist here

CUTTING OUT Treat rayon like any other slippery fabric. Use a without-nap layout, double thickness. You can stop it slipping around by placing a piece of tissue paper underneath the fabric/pattern and taping the tissue to the work surface. Use paperweights or sharp fine tipped pins. Some rayon can snag easily and larger pins can leave holes in your delicate fabric. Always pin in the seam allowance so you don’t leave any holes in this delicate fabric. You may find it easier to be cut more precisely with a rotary cutter and cutting mat. Rayon can stretch so always roll your cut fabric to minimise this.

We like to use Janome 75/11 needle, which is identified by the blue shank. It has a pierced point plus a slightly longer than normal thread groove (scarf). This needle cures skipped stitches and puckering in any problem fabric especially synthetics. Although only available in size 11 it’s compatible with a vast majority of fabrics.

SMOOTH SEWING This titanium rotary cutter has been designed for both left- and right-handed users and has a easy grip comfort loop which really helps grip. Costs around £19 and can be purchased from www.amazon.co.uk

LIFT AND PRESS Always lift and press your iron on this type of rayon. This will help avoid stretching it and avoid any wavy hems. A dry iron on medium temperature with a press cloth – a paper towel works well. Rayon in general, should be left to cool before proceeding. Over-pressing can cause a shine to appear.

HANG BEFORE HEMMING Give the garment a day to hang before hemming. You can use an overlock the raw edge, and then hand-hem a narrow hem for best results.

Always test your sewing machine tension on a scrap of fabric. Always pin the seams to be sewn together to secure the fabric layers from slipping while sewing. Rayon can stretch out of shape so let your sewing machine do the work and resist pulling the fabric whilst you sew! Stop sewing and re-adjust your fabric at regular intervals. Stay stitching is key is to helping necklines stay in shape. Choose a fusible sheer-weight interfacing so it doesn’t affect the fabric’s drape. As rayon is prone to fraying, finish your raw edges with a zigzag stitch or choose a French seam. Use a smaller new needles size 65/9, 75/11 or 80/11 for thin, lightweight rayons and a slightly more delicate stitch such as 2mm stitch instead of the automatic 2.5mm. For longer side seams, sew with a narrow zigzag, 0.5 mm wide and 2.5 mm long so the seams will relax as the fabric relaxes. This can help with any fraying going beyond the seam. Use a standard all-purpose or zigzag presser foot. Remember to make sure your thread weight matches your fabric weight. Choose a polyester thread or polycotton. When sewing with rayon, I use a 2mm stitch as opposed to the automatic 2.5mm on my machine. I find my seams to lie nicer and because rayon can fray easily, the smaller stitch will help prevent any fraying going beyond the seam line. Plus, I just think it looks nicer. A more delicate fabric needs a more delicate stitch, right? www.thepatternpages.com

BAGS OF STYLE We talk with Samantha Hussey, who’s mad about bag design!

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO SHARE YOUR BAG MAKING WITH OTHERS? I’m an independent bag sewing patterns designer, based in south Wales. I started my business in 2011, but it wasn't until 2014 that I began building my brand. I’m dyslexic and I found that I have a rather fun superpower that lets me picture 3D shapes as their 2D components – which is ideal for designing bag patterns! I feel lucky to be able to share my passion with other bagineers (people who love making bags!). DO YOU DESIGN ALL MRS H BAG PATTERNS? Yes I do and I love designing sewing patterns that help bag makers to develop new skills and use beautiful hardware! I love seeing my patterns I've designed coming to life, and it’s great to see bag makers earning a living from selling the bags that they've made using my patterns.

WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION FOR NEW BAG DESIGNS COME FROM? With every bag pattern I design, I try to teach a technique or concept, or show bagineers how to use an element of beautiful hardware. The Jangles Anchor Bag uses gorgeous strap anchors from Emmaline Bags and teaches how to create an internal divider pocket. The Ring Sling uses clever construction to reduce the amount of stabiliser you need. And my newest sewing pattern, The Bucket Tote, teaches how to add an oval base to your bag and gives practice sewing around curves. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PATTERN THAT YOU’VE DESIGNED SO FAR AND WHY? Oh, that's a tough one! I usually find myself loving whatever pattern I’m currently working on. My customers' favourites are The Companion Carpet Bag, The Dainty Daytripper, and The Squiffy Sling. It helps to see so many gorgeous versions being made in the sewing groups on Facebook and it just makes me fall in love with my patterns even more!

TELL US ABOUT THE BAG RETREAT YOU ORGANISE EACH YEAR? We typically run four Bag Retreats a year at an amazing hotel in the beautiful Welsh valleys – The Ramada Cwrt Bleddyn spa hotel near Usk. Each Bag Retreat runs for three days and involves a lot of sewing, socialising, and cake! Retreat tickets include two nights’ accommodation, meals, exclusive sewing patterns, skill-building sessions, on-hand support and advice from me and my team, as well as access to the hotel’s spa facilities (if you have time!). We even have our own pop-up haberdashery, provided by Sew Hot! We’ve sadly had to cancel our spring Bag Retreats this year, but we’re looking forward to seeing our retreaters again soon!

WHAT IS THE BAG OF THE MONTH CLUB? The Bag of the Month Club is a sewing pattern subscription club where our members receive a mystery bag pattern at the start of each month of the club. Each pattern is exclusive to club members for the duration of the club, so you won’t find them anywhere else! We’ve just had the final pattern of the Rising Stars Edition of the club, which ran from January through to April. Our next season of The Bag of the Month Club will run from August to November, and our early-bird discounted sign up will start on 15th July!

TELL US THREE FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF? My daughter’s nickname is Elvis. My favourite saying is, ‘Safety never takes a day off.’ Unusually for a crafter, I’m also a minimalist! Though I’m sorely tempted to add to my stash every time Sew Hot or Emmaline post something new to their pages! DO YOU HAVE ANY NEWS TO SHARE WITH US? I have a book coming out later this year, which is very exciting! The Complete Bag Making Masterclass and is a comprehensive guide to modern bag making techniques. It’s due for Mrs H release at the end of July but you can www.mrs-h.com pre-order from the website.

The Alderdress Tips and tricks to make this woven top

Meet The Alder Dress. It’s our fourth sewing pattern and has been designed for annual subscribers of The Pattern Pages. This versatile A-line calf-skimming dress is reversible so the back can be the front and vice versa. With a stylish high round neck and keyhole detail and tie, this sleeveless style is easy to make and will become a go-to staple in your wardrobe this summer.

Adding dimension with darts Darts come in pairs, and this dress has four darts – two on the front and two on the back. Inserting the darts helps change this flat front and back into shaped pieces that will fit the contours of your body.

5 tips to stitching the darts

1 2

Mark the dart lines with chalk, and press the dart before sewing to help it keep its shape while stitching. Start to sew the dart from the top of the dart at the widest end. Use the marked line to position the fabric so you sew in a straight line.

3 4 5

The vital part of a good dart is the tapering off at the bottom point of the dart. Never backstitch at the dart bottom. Instead tie a knot in the thread and secure in place.

Always sew your darts one after the other. You have more chance of getting these to match.

38 | www.thepatternpages.com

As a mother & daughter team, we want to create patterns that are versatile and that both of us would like to wear.

Bound armholes The Alder Dress pattern includes pieces to make your own bias binding. However, you can use readymade bias, which you can get in lots of pretty colours and prints that can either contrast or match your dress fabric. ♥

Start by pressing the side seams of the bias binding (readymade bias binding will folded and pressed already to go).

Press one of the sides of the tape so that it lies flat. With right sides together line the open side of the tape with the armhole, and pin in place. Where the bias binding tape meets, open out the binding and sew the two ends together to join.

Sew around the armhole in the binding crease that’s nearest the raw edge.

Turn the binding to the other side of the armhole, and press and pin towards the wrong side. This will now encase all the raw edges. Starting sewing under the arm, edge-stitch the binding to the inside, and press from the inside.

Tips for styling: 1.

This pullover pattern has a generous pattern ease so ensure you pick the right size.

2.

Designed for medium weight woven fabrics such as twill, denim, cotton sateen, brocade and blends, which you may already have in your fabric stash at home.

3.

Make the tie in a contrasting fabric for extra wow factor.

4.

Add a stylish belt to cinch in the waist or wear loose on holiday.

5.

This style is perfect to show-off a border print fabric.

Lockdown result:

This is pdf pattern is easy to assemble at home and has just 24 pieces. The fabric came from our stash, and is an inexpensive woven fabric but has a lovely drape. The pattern has pieces for your own bias binding, but we decided to cheat and add a contrasting readymade version and finished off with a contrasting silk tie instead of making one in the same fabric.
