1:

Understanding Forces in Skeletal Structures

The project’s criteria was to built a 30cm high tower structure by using only 200 popsicle sticks and thread. The ‘stalwart’ means dependable or reliable. My group and I wanted to build a tower structure that delineate this word such that it could withstand such a load for the longest time. Although, we couldn’t actually finish the tower on time and the final top module was done quite roughly and on the day of testing, it bent before we could stop it. This project was an introduction to the structure construction systems and the understanding of the connection system, load and the law of static. It enabled us the knowledge of the limits of popsicle and thread model making as well.

• Apply construction system in design • Recognize implication of construction systems in design • Analyse the issues of strength, stiffness, and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, and law of static

objectives

Stalwart

Our idea derived from the concept of a box enforced with glazing on both sides and repeated vertically for the chosen height. This is derived from brainstorming solution for distributing load. In a box, the force is distribute evenly on all four sides, and together with the enforcement of glazing,

the strength of the box is enhanced.
