Architecture design studio is all about understanding the process of design (architecturally). It covers from understanding the factors that affects a design, the medium to design accordingly and understanding your true identity in design. This current semester four architecture design studio four focused on sustainability as well as humanity. ICE BREAKER

I C E BREAKER: T E T R A P A K COMPETITION

design f o r g o o d Design for Good is a Tetra Pak Malaysia’s annual sustainable design competition where in a group of 4, we were required to design and come up with a commercial and sustainable product made from Tetra Pak’s recycled materials such as drink cartons. This project/competition had us only about 1 week of production process. And the requirements of competition submission was an advertisement video about our product with a short clip regarding on the production process, as well as a poster on the product.

Step 1: Collect your tetrapak cartons

Step 2: Flatten your tetrapak carton, cut one side and open it to get a rectangular plane

Step 3: Connect the plane modules side by side by using duct tape Shamil Shukri Wan Abdul Muhaymin Khairil Izwan Ighwan Lunchroll

Step 5: Cut handle holes on two separate plane modules and paste it on the sides to create the handles

Step 4: Create a rectangular compartment to fit your food container and cut a hole to place your drink

By taking advantage of Tetrapak’s carton material such as durability, heat resistance, waterproof and light, we decided to create a lunchroll as a new way to carry your lunch. By just using 16 cartons of tetrapak products, we had 2 layers of 6 cartons stuck and laid next to each other. We then added a compartment space to place the food container as well as cut a hole to place the cup drink. After that, we added two cut out, opened-cartons at the sides for the handles. On top of that, this lunchroll can just be folded and put in your bag whenever you don’t have any food to carry as well!

PROJECT ONE

DISCOVERING T H E E N V I RO N M E N T A N D S O C I A L N E E D S

S I T E A N A LY S I S In this part of the project, in a group of five, we were required to understand, learn and analyze the chosen site for us situated in Gombak, the Orang Asli Museum. In this site analysis, we were required to analyse a few criteria; the site context, climate, human behaviours, environmental context as well as the issues regarding the context. This project was basically to help in our final individual projects.

COMMUNITY HANDCRAFT LEARNING CENTRE

issue who are the orang asli?

solution to raise awareness of orang asli’s identity through handcraft learning

1Who is the Orang Asli? What is Orang Asli? According to site visit interviews, the Orang Asli mentioned that they felt that they were being neglected in a way where people, more specifically the locals, do not know who they are and to them, they were the first settlement in Malaya. They had sacrificed a lot to be part of Malaysia but somehow felt like they were left aside and “walk behind the main races of Malaysia”. They also mentioned that it would be nice if their stories are to be told such as their history, their culture and basically who they are. My design is to raise awareness of the Orang Asli’s identity, working together with the Museum of Orang Asli in Gombak. And this, I designed a place where people can learn who the Orang Asli are through learning their process of handcrafting with the Orang Asli to teach them. This will also help the young generation of Orang Asli to learn and be proud of their culture and identity. My design is targeted for not only the locals but to whoever visits the site as well as give a space for the Orang Asli community to work, sell and organize events for their own gatherings.
