Precedent Studies:

The project’s criteria was to study about two different spatial typologies, linear and concentric with the help of two buildings as precedent studies. On top of that, we have to understand the poetics of architecture of both of the buildings such as the meanings and reasonings behind the colour, materials and purposes of the different spaces and materials. This project opened my eyes on how rich of history and significance the buildings hold. Moreover, the buildings that were picked of two different eras. This made me realised that architecture is more than design and construction of the buildings but moulded with such poetics that made the buildings just simply splendid. Every detail. Every colour. Every symbol and meaning.

learning outcome

• Identify and explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience • Identify and analyze case studies to inform the design project

1b:

The Journey for The 5 Senses This project was to design two different structures of the two different typologies with the main awareness of having it hold the meanings behind our understanding of a chosen poem. I loved this project’s criteria. It enabled me to understand my feelings upon my own designs and had me give more meaning and awareness on my design structures. It enabled me to be as abstract as I could be, shape my building and see my building structure as an art instead of a plain building structure with purpose. This project was a combination of literature, history and art, which had me reckoned that when architecture had purpose in not only the function but also meaning, architecture itself is a molded sculpture of the architect.

learning outcome

• Create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space • Generate design through conscious consideration of sectionplan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures • Produce drawings, modelling and verbal presentation to com municate and visualize architectural design and ideas

project

2a:

The site that we had to analyze was situated in Bukit Brown, Singapore, a closed municipal cemetery, which was also one of the largest Chinese cemetery in Asia, out of China. As a group, we basically learned a lot about our own site and the whole of Bukit Brown such that we covered from the type of trees, total number of graves, neighbouring contexts, history and people’s use and basic views on the site. I had a lot of fun doing this project. We had only a few days to prepare for our presentation and within the few days, we could cover a whole lot of information of just one place. Understanding more about people and the place was basically what architects had to have exposure to and this project had us practice.

• Produce site analysis which document, interpret and analyze the site context and the ‘genius loci’ of place

project

2b:

With the help of project 1A, 1B and 2A, Project 2B was simply a mixture of the three subjects. Required to design a structure that could hold hold our feelings of our own design and site, respond to the site analysis and have the poetics that it could accumulate after a certain period of time. One of the best projects that could have you think really deep on basic design principles and integrate with more of you. I enjoyed this project and loved how I could mould my structure as much as I wanted to have it fit to my feelings and views on the site, its character. This project was also integrated with Building Science 1 Project 3 so it also gave us the users environmental awareness.

learning outcome

• Generate design based on the unique character and conditions of the site context • Generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materials and texture • Design small scale community building which response to the site

The motive of this project is to design a Visitor Interpretive Centre for the users and visitors of Bukit Brown. Bukit Brown is situated in the heart of Novena in Singapore of about 200 years old. It is a closed municipal Chinese cemetery and now being used partly as a natural park for the neighbouring residential area. Many activities besides paying respect to the deceased are being carried out in Bukit Brown such as bird watching, walking the dog and jogging. Although Bukit Brown is being used quite effectively, it is also observed that not many people come to pay respect to the departed so as due to the belief that Bukit Brown holds quite a number of tombs that have been there for decades, generations beyond the current generation. [my aim for my VIC deBukit Brown is situated in a land with hot and humid climate all year round, sign is to reconnect the Singappore and being located in a current and later tropical country, Bukit Brown gets sufficient rain and sun. generation with the touch Therefore my site gets enough of Chinese heritage and shading during the day from 0900 till 1700 almost all year round due to the the bold and significant help of the two prominent trees at the belief of death in Chinese sides of my building. [death + ornamentation + new highway • Death: the Chinese belief in death is very deep. The significance of death and reincarnation can be assumed as the belief that the Chinese hold that can make them stronger as a person in life and encourage him/ her to be good in the world for the better next afterlife. • Ornamentation: The motifs and ornamentation on the tombs can be very intricate for the very old ones and as the generation journeys through time, it becomes simpler and simpler. These intricate ornamentations and motifs have meanings and symbolise something such as some sculptures represents as guardians and some motifs represents the gardens of heaven. • New Highway: I feel like the highway has not benefited Bukit Brown in conserving its heritage. This 8-lane purposed highway has started to exhume the tombs and it is calculated that around 5% of the total number of graves situated in Bukit Brown, which is about 5000 tombs.

Walkway outside of the PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT VIC that gives access to the ‘buffer zone’, deck, as well as the washrooms. This can be used as the bridge connecting the two hills for the users of Bukit Brown such as the joggers, etc.

‘Buffer zone’/Deck: For users of VIC and Bukit Brown, this deck fully covered and situated at about 3m above ground which is of high-speed wind as compared to the other heights. This gives the users the opportunity to sit down, relax and ponder about what they have learnt from my VIC.

Shape of structure: The shape of the structure flows with the site context, ie: the lower area is being pulled back underneath a tree due to the fact that this area is supposedly morbid and the upper level to be pulled into the sunny area due to the fact that the walls have imprints on the for natural ventilation and lighting.

Exhibition area #1: After the entrance the user continues the journey from a confined space towards the bigger space. This is to give the feeling of having to die/being underground - buried and into the transition of earth and heaven. This space covers the history and significance of Bukit Brown and PRODUCED BY AN Chinese AUTODESK underEDUCATIONAL PRODUCT the traditional standing of death.

Entrance/Exit + Walkway:

VIC users exit here on to continue to with their journey. Reason why: This exit is on the hill with much more and older tombs as compared to the oppossite hill.

Exhibition area #2: This area gives the feeling of ‘heaven’ where natural light comes into the structure from the imprints on the wall.

Imprints/Motifs: Motifs imprinted through the walls in random pattern for natural lighting. The motif chosen is the floral motif that holds the meaning of the flowers of heaven. This is imprinted increases its population from the middle towards the top such that the top area is the ‘heaven’ part of the structure.
