PREFACE

J U S T Y O U R TYPICAL PORTFOLIO INTRODUCTION ARC 2712

ELECTIVE SUBJECT

everything you need to know about deconstructing and reconstructing topics, concepts and ideas.

two cr. hrs.

This subject covered only one main project that contained many sub-topics. It required us to think, analyse, let out our opinions and legitimate ideas. Basically, it is divided into two main parts, deconstruction and reconstruction. Deconstruction has two sub-topics which are, theme/topic and building. Under theme/topic, we were required to pick any subject of our own and break it into pieces - analyse it fully. the outcome for this is in the form of verbal presentations every week for the first three weeks. As for deconstructing the building, we were required to fully understand the concept as well as the design principles of the building. This part’s outcome came in the form of a simple A5 booklet. Reconstruction on the other hand required us to merge our understand of the two deconstruction sub-topics that we had analysed previously and reinterpret it in the view as our own. The outcome came about as an A5 booklet as well as a model.

PART ONE

DECONSTRUCTING A T O P I C

TOPIC: f a i r y t a l e The reason why did I chose this topic is because I felt that this topic was limitless and I also wondered what can it become if I had chosen this topic. Fairy Tale is yes, in fact, a very limitless topic but at the same time, the history and being could be very rich, deep and meaningful. After understanding more about Fairy Tale, it gave me a slight change of perception of Fairy Tale, that it was actually within each person and that it related to architecture quite strongly.

LIGHT&SHADOW U T O P I A A N D DYSTOPIA

Fairy tale has its way where the princess and the prince lives in the most perfect environment where everything is well-mannered, there is no fights, no violence and everyone is friendly such that there is no stranger in the place. I literally translated the opposite of Utopia, Dystopia for my interpretation of Shadow in Fairy Tale. Dystopia basically describes an imaginary place where everything is bad or unpleasent. Typically an evironmentally degraded place where the evil characters live in. Basically, under this sub-topic, I interpreted Light & Shadow as Utopia vs. Dystopia.

MOVEMENT C H R O N O LO GY A N D DEVELOPMENT

This subtopic covered the medium of Fairy Tale story-telling as well as how Fairy Tale traveled, differed and adapted in the different regions of the world. Exploration also concluded that these Fairy Tale stories, may it be far and near varied slightly within different regions such that even though it had the same storyline but it contained different characters names and settings to fit into their culture as well as their tradition and region. Basically, through time and travel, these Fairy Tale started to become an adaptation of one another.

FUNCTION&SCALE

INFLUENCE A N D FA S H I O N

To understand this subtopic, Fashion, more specifically, Vogue was used to experiment my interpretation of Influence and Scale in Fairy Tale. How I interpreted through Vogue was how influential Vogue is throughout the world such that it settles all around the world, in most of the major countries as well as the impact it gave to its readers. I then related it back with Fairy Tale where Fairy Tale was meant to influence and give an impact on its audience, and somehow it did influenced many and throughtout the world.

PART TWO

DECONSTRUCTING A BUILDING

HERZOG&DEMEURON

P R A D A A O Y A M A T O K Y O Prada’s Aoyama Epicentre in Omotesando fashion area in Tokyo is designed like a three-dimensional display window. It uses the maximum volume obtainable and the maximum floor area within its site, taking into account the requisite distances from other building. Its form, facade as well as structure holds such significance in concept and presence.

In Part Two, this building was analyzed, interpreted and showcased through a series of diagrammings of its theme and concept as well as design principles that the architects used as well as of personal thoughts and understandings.

PART THREE

RECONSTRUCTING: T O P I C + D E S I G N

Mainly focused on the emotions and feelings that Anastasia ventured throughout the animation, I decided to reconstruct Prada Aoyama’s design rendition with a reinterpretation by blending in with the focused element that I picked out from Anastasia. In this section, the diagrammings showcases my reinterpretation of Prada Aoyama. Part Three, on the other hand, showcases the reinterpretation of Prada Aoyama with a blend of the topic analyzed in Part I, Fairytale. However, the topic has been narrowed down such that the fairytale animation Anastasia was further analyzed. Why did I pick Anastasia was due to my own opinion of the beauty of it’s storyline. It covered almost everything of the typical Fairy Tale storyline.

The outcome that I had come up with was a design formula where it covered the emotions and feelings of Anastasia throughout the story. This formula can be designed as the experiences within a building or architectural structure and design. A booklet of further analytical diagrammings were also produced to understand the outcome that I came up with.
