A MODERN LEGACY A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH ARON HARILELA, FOUNDER OF THE HARI AND CEO OF HARILELA HOTELS. BY EDWARD KING
9
10
"I WANTED TO CREATE A HOTEL WHERE I WOULD WANT TO STAY ALL THE TIME, AN EXTENSION OF THE HOME AND A UNIQUE BELGRAVIA HOUSE". "THE HARI BRAND IS A STEP IN A NEW DIRECTION, IN HONOUR OF MY FATHER’S LEGACY". Above: Aron Harilela with his parents the late Dr. Hari Harilela - founder of Harilela Hotels and his wife of fifty years Padma Harilela. On the right: The entrance of The Hari Hotel in London.
INTERVIEW
THE HARILELA GROUP WAS FOUNDED IN HONG KONG IN 1959 BY DR. HARI HARILELA. OVER THE YEARS, THROUGH HIS HARD WORK, UNIQUE BUSINESS ACUMEN, AND THE SUPPORT AND INSIGHT OF HIS FAMILY, HE BUILT A SUCCESSFUL HOTEL EMPIRE WHILE EARNING AN IMPECCABLE REPUTATION, THANKS TO HIS HEIGHTENED ETHICAL SENSE AND RESPECT FOR OTHERS. TODAY, WE MEET HIS SON, ARON HARILELA, WHO IS NOW CHAIRMAN OF THE GROUP. HE HAS MADE IT HIS PRIORITY TO LEAD THE COMPANY TOWARDS A BRIGHT FUTURE, RELYING UPON THE WORK ETHIC AND PRINCIPLES INSTILLED BY HIS FATHER, WHICH HAVE BECOME AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE COMPANY’S DNA. THE HARI HOTEL IS ONE OF THE WAYS HE INTENDS TO CARRY ON HIS FAMILY LEGACY. NESTLED IN BELGRAVIA, ON THE BOARDERS OF CHELSEA AND KNIGHTSBRIDGE, THE HARI IS A UNIQUE HOTEL LOCATED IN A UNIQUE SPOT IN CENTRAL LONDON. WHAT WERE YOUR ASPIRATIONS FOR THE HOTEL WHEN YOU DECIDED TO OPEN THE HARI, AND TODAY - JUST ONE YEAR SINCE ITS OPENING IN AUGUST OF 2016 - WOULD YOU SAY THE HOTEL HAS FULFILLED THOSE EXPECTATIONS? THE FIRST HOTEL I EVER PURCHASED WAS THIS BUILDING, BACK IN 1997. THE FIRST DEAL IS ALWAYS SPECIAL. THAT’S WHY THIS WAS THE PERFECT PLACE TO START THE HARI BRAND. THE HARI BRAND PAYS HOMAGE TO MY FATHER, HARI HARILELA, WHO FOUNDED THE COMPANY 50 YEARS AGO. IT IS ALL THE MORE SPECIAL THAT I SHOULD START THE HARI HERE. I SEE THIS HOTEL AS AN EXTENSION OF MYSELF AND OF MY CHARACTER. I WANTED TO CREATE A HOTEL WHERE I WOULD WANT TO STAY ALL THE TIME, AN EXTENSION OF THE HOME AND A UNIQUE BELGRAVIA HOUSE. ONE YEAR ON, WE HAVE CREATED AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE. A HOTEL IS MUCH MORE THAN 4 WALLS. THE STAFF ARE LIKE FAMILY AND I BELIEVE EACH GUEST FEELS THIS. THIS IS HOW MY EXPECTATIONS HAVE BEEN FULFILLED. WE HAVE CREATED A FAMILY HERE AND THE PROOF IS THAT, PRESENTLY, WE ARE RANKED 10TH OUT OF 1086 HOTELS IN LONDON ON TRIP ADVISOR. UPON READING YOUR FAMILY’S HISTORY, I REALIZED YOUR FATHER MADE A BOLD MOVE WHEN DECIDING TO GET INTO THE HOTEL BUSINESS. WHEN HE OPENED HIS FIRST HOTEL IN HONG KONG, IN 1975, HE MOVED ON FROM WHAT HAD BEEN, UNTIL THEN, A LUCRATIVE TAILORING BUSINESS. IN THE YEARS THAT FOLLOWED, THE HARILELA GROUP GREW EXPONENTIALLY, SUCCESSFULLY OWNING AND MANAGING NUMEROUS HOTELS ACROSS THE WORLD, BUT THE HARI IS THE FIRST HOTEL YOU OWN AND RUN UNDER YOUR OWN BRAND. IS THIS ALSO A BOLD MOVE? WHY DID YOU DECIDE THE TIME WAS RIGHT AND WHAT NEW OPPORTUNITIES AND SCENARIOS HAS THIS OPENED UP FOR YOU AND THE HARILELA GROUP?
INTERVIEW
11
FOR 50 YEARS, HARILELA HOTELS HAS PRIMARILY DEVELOPED HOTELS WHILE ALLOWING THIRD PARTIES TO MANAGE THEM. STARTING TO MANAGE THEM OURSELVES IS A DEFINITE DEPARTURE FROM OUR PREVIOUS STRATEGY. OUR NEW STRATEGY EMBRACES THE NEW ENVIRONMENT WE LIVE IN. I WANTED TO HONOUR MY FATHER’S LEGACY. UNFORTUNATELY, HE PASSED AWAY BEFORE THE HARI, LONDON OPENED ITS DOORS. STARTING THE HARI BRAND HAS GIVEN ME A LOT MORE FREEDOM TO CREATE WHAT GUESTS LOVE WITHOUT THE RIGIDITY OF A BRAND. THE HARI IS AN EXPERIENCE. DO YOU SEE THE HARI AS THE NATURAL EVOLUTION OF YOUR COMPANY AND YOUR FATHER’S LEGACY OR A STEP IN A NEW DIRECTION? I THINK IT IS A STEP IN A NEW DIRECTION, IN HONOUR OF MY FATHER’S LEGACY. WHAT ARE THE UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HOTEL THAT YOU BELIEVE WILL CAPTIVATE YOUR GUESTS AND INSPIRE THEM TO RETURN? ANY SIGNATURE EXPERIENCES WHICH ARE UNIQUE TO THE HARI? WE HAVE SEEN TREMENDOUS LOYALTY FROM OUR GUESTS, BUILT UPON OUR PRINCIPLES OF METICULOUS ATTENTION TO DETAIL, TAILORED EXPERIENCES FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL, AND THE INTRODUCTION OF NEW WAYS TO APPRECIATE THE CITY’S CULTURE. OUR TEAM SHARES THEIR FAVOURITE LITERATURE PICKS WITH OUR GUESTS, WE REGULARLY REFRESH THE ARTWORK, AND WE RELISH THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPOIL PEOPLE IN THE SPIRIT OF TRULY GENEROUS HOSPITALITY.
12
THE HARI IS LOCATED IN ONE OF THE MOST HISTORICAL PARTS OF LONDON, YET IT OFFERS GUESTS A MODERN INTERPRETATION OF HOSPITALITY IN A CONTEMPORARY SETTING. HOW DO TRADITION AND MODERNITY LIVE TOGETHER UNDER THE SAME ROOF IN YOUR HOTEL? I THINK LONDON IS THE PERFECT JUXTAPOSITION OF TRADITION AND MODERNITY. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST FORWARD-LOOKING CITIES THAT I KNOW. I COME FROM A VERY LARGE TRADITIONAL FAMILY – MY ROOTS ARE TRADITIONAL AND YET I TRY TO EMBRACE A VERY MODERN OUTLOOK. SO, I HOPE THAT THE HARI IS EXACTLY THAT – AN EXTENSION OF MY STYLE IN LONDON. YOU HAVE GIVEN A LOT OF CARE TO THE RESTAURANT AND BAR AREAS OF THE HOTEL, MAKING IT A GO-TO PLACE FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS AS WELL AS HOTEL GUESTS. ANY PARTICULAR DISHES AND DRINKS YOU WISH TO RECOMMEND TO OUR READERS AND ANY SPECIAL INSIGHT AS TO WHY YOU CHOSE TO HAVE AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT IN THE HOTEL AND CALLED IT “IL PAMPERO”? THAT’S A FUNNY STORY. NAMING IS ALWAYS A DIFFICULT TASK AS IT IS EXTREMELY SUBJECTIVE. IN CREATING THE RESTAURANT THERE WERE MANY ITALIAN NAMES BUT I DID NOT FEEL ANY OF THEM FIT THE BRAND AND THE HOTEL. I WAS SITTING ONE SUMMER EVENING, HAVING A GLASS OF WINE WITH A VERY DEAR FRIEND WHO IS ALSO THE DESIGNER OF THE HOTEL, TARA BERNERD. I TOLD HER THAT I COULDN’T FIND A NAME FOR THE RESTAURANT. KNOWING THAT I AM AN AVID POLO PLAYER, SHE IMMEDIATELY ASKED ME WHAT WAS THE NAME OF MY FAVOURITE HORSE – PAMPERO - AND THAT’S HOW THE NAME WAS CREATED, OVER A GLASS OF WINE ON A LONDON SUMMER EVENING. SO, THE RESTAURANT IS NAMED AFTER MY FAVOURITE HORSE. WHERE DO YOU SEE THE HARI BRAND GOING IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? WE ARE SET TO OPEN THE HARI, HONG KONG IN 2020. THIS WILL BE INCREDIBLY EXCITING SINCE HONG KONG IS WHERE IT ALL BEGAN. LONDON AND HONG KONG WILL BE OUR FLAGSHIPS AND THE DNA OF THE HARI GOING FORWARD. WATCH THIS SPACE. FINALLY, YOU WERE BORN AND RAISED IN HONG KONG AND HAVE LIVED THERE FOR MOST OF YOUR LIFE, BUT YOU ALSO SPEND A LOT OF TIME IN LONDON. WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT THIS CITY AND WHAT DO YOU DO HERE DURING YOUR FREE TIME? I LOVE THE JUXTAPOSITION OF EXTREMES THAT CO-EXIST IN LONDON. AS WE MENTIONED BEFORE, TRADITION AND THE MODERNITY, BUT ALSO THE CULTURAL DIVERSITY OF THE CITY. ANYONE WHO LIVES HERE IS A LONDONER REGARDLESS OF RACE, COLOUR OR ETHNICITY. IT IS A CITY THAT IS PROUD OF ITS BRITISHNESS BUT THAT BRITISHNESS IS MULTI-DIMENSIONAL.
INTERVIEW
''IN MY SPARE TIME, I TAKE MY KIDS TO THE COUNTRYSIDE, WHERE I KEEP MY POLO PONIES, AND WHILE THEY RUN AROUND I PLAY A POLO GAME OR A TOURNAMENT''. Aron Harilela is an a avid polo player and has been patron of his own team for many years, even though married life and the recent birth of his two children have taken predence over his favourite sport, which he still plays whenever he can. Bold textures, arabesque marbles, valuable velvets, crystal ware: the quintessence of British style enclosed in 85 rooms and suites, a library, the terrace, the restaurant and the entrance hall; a triumph of mirrors and varnished surfaces, for a sophisticated and impressive impact. In order to give shape to the interiors of The Hari Hotel, interior designer Tara Bernerd and her team worked to create a warm and cosy atmosphere, where guests can feel at home. Armchairs to sink into by the fireplace, wooden floors, every detail has been carefully thought out in order to provide a remarkable feeling of warmth and character, with a strong British imprint. In perfect harmony with the Belgravia neighbourhood where the hotel is located, and where Tara has her studio.
A DISTINCTIVE, MODERN GLAMOUR
Bernerd and her team have a unique and highly thoughtful approach to design: a signature mix of approachable luxury with an industrial edge; each space possesses a masculine, and ultimately timeless, elegance. Tara Bernerd and Partners’ projects span the globe, with properties in New York, Miami, LA, London, Hong Kong and beyond. In each work, she strives to create a feeling of authenticity by establishing a distinct design DNA that is true to both the location and the people who will make it their home. DESIGN

TRADITIONAL HOMEMADE ITALIAN COOKING MEETS CONTEMPORARY LONDON DINING WITH IL PAMPERO AT THE HARI. BY SARAH JONES

The soft leather seats of this dining room are so welcoming, and the geometric flooring and curious wall prints seem almost to accompany guests and invite them to get comfortable. At Il Pampero, Italian hospitality and Belgravian style go hand in hand. The menu offers an authentic culinary tradition, under the auspices of Executive Chef Claudio Covino, whereas the surroundings represent the happy pairing of glamour and elegance in pure British style, thanks to the expertise of interior designer, Tara Bernerd. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner, and is a reference point not only for hotel guests, but for anyone seeking to enjoy true Italian cuisine in a luxurious yet informal setting, with a vivacious atmosphere. The menu selections are sophisticated and creative: pasta is the main protagonist, but there are also numerous fish and meat-based dishes that are simple and delicious, ideally accompanied by a glass of wine from some of the best producers in Italy and elsewhere. Diners can also choose to eat at the main bar, the prime location for enjoying a classic Italian aperitivo. One of Executive Chef Claudio Covino’s signature dishes is the Tonnarello cacio e pepe: homemade tonnarello pasta is served with a sauce made from creamy sheep’s milk cheese and freshly-milled black pepper. For this dish, the server mixes the fresh pasta inside a wheel of Pecorino cheese to create a rich, silky sauce for the dish.

BOASTING A LONG CAREER S HISTORY, SUCH AS THE FAMO RENOWNED ENGLISH PHOTO BEAUTY THERE IS AROUND U BY SARAH JONES
22
THE PHOTOGRAPHER AT THE IL PAMPERO RESTAURANT WHERE A NUMBER OF HIS WORKS ARE ON DISPLAY.
STUDDED WITH ENCOUNTERS AND PICTURES THAT HAVE MADE OUS KISS BETWEEN PRINCE CHARLES AND LADY DIANA, THIS OGRAPHER –NOW IN HIS EIGHTIES- REMINDS US HOW MUCH US. ONE OF YOUR CAREER ANECDOTES REGARDS A CAUSAL ENCOUNTER YOU HAD WITH MICK JAGGER WHICH ALLOWED YOU TO TAKE ONE OF THE STAR’S MOST ICONIC IMAGES. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO BE AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME IN PHOTOGRAPHY? IT’S VERY IMPORTANT, THE SECRET REALLY IS TO GET AN EXCLUSIVE, A PICTURE THAT NO ONE ELSE HAS. I TRY AND CARRY A CAMERA AT ALL TIMES, AS YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN AN OPPORTUNITY WILL PRESENT ITSELF. YOU HAVE SHOT NUMEROUS STARS AND PERSONALITIES, ANY CURIOUS ANECDOTES WORTH MENTIONING? IN 1965, I WAS SENT ON AN ASSIGNMENT TO THE HILTON HOTEL IN LONDON TO COVER A BLACK TIE SPORTING EVENT AND FOUND MYSELF CHATTING ALONE WITH AMERICA’S UNDEFEATED WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING CHAMPION, ROCKY MARCIANO. HE WAS FASCINATED BY THE FACT I HAD A BROKEN NOSE JUST LIKE HIS AND ASKED IF I BOXED MYSELF. I PROCEEDED TO TELL ME HIM HOW IT CAME ABOUT: "I USED TO HAVE A PAPER ROUND AND SADLY I HAD TO DELIVER NEWSPAPERS TO THE HOUSE THAT THE SCHOOL BULLY LIVED IN, ONE MORNING I MUST HAVE BEEN A LITTLE BIT TOO LIPPY, AS HE REPLIED BY PUNCHING ME SQUARE IN THE FACE!" ROCKY THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS HILARIOUS AND HAD A GOOD CHUCKLE ABOUT IT. WE WERE THEN CALLED IN TO A BIG ROOM WHERE ROCKY WAS TO MEET OUR OWN GREAT BRITISH HEAVYWEIGHTS AND BE PRESENTED WITH AN AWARD. AS WE HAD MADE A CONNECTION EARLIER IN THE CORRIDOR I MANAGED TO COERCE HIM INTO FORMING ‘THE RING’ PHOTOGRAPH WHICH I TOOK LYING DOWN ON THE FLOOR LOOKING UP AT ALL THE BATTERED BOXER'S FACES. ARE YOU FULLY RETIRED OR YOU STILL ENJOY USING YOUR CAMERA? I OFFICIALLY RETIRED IN 1990. ALTHOUGH I’LL BE 82 THIS DECEMBER, I'VE EMBRACED THE DIGITAL AGE AND STILL LOVE TO TAKE PICTURES, THE ABILITY TO DOWNLOAD IMAGES SO QUICKLY ONTO MY COMPUTER IS JUST WONDERFUL. IT’S INCREDIBLE REALLY, AS I USED TO HAVE TO TRAVEL ON ASSIGNMENTS WITH A TENT AS A DARKROOM, THE CHEMICALS, TANKS, ETC, AND SOMEONE TO PROCESS THE FILMS FOR ME. IS THERE ANYBODY WHO YOU CONSIDER YOUR TEACHER IN THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY OR IS THERE ANYONE WHO INSPIRED YOU AND WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER? I WAS PRETTY MUCH SELF TAUGHT ACTUALLY, I STUDIED THE PICTURES IN PHOTOGRAPHIC BOOKS AND MAGAZINES FOR MANY YEARS AND WENT OUT WITH MY CAMERA ON A DAILY BASIS. MY ADVICE TO ANYONE STARTING OUT WOULD BE TO TAKE LOTS AND LOTS OF PICTURES, AND A GREAT WAY TO LEARN IS TO ASSIST SUCCESSFUL PHOTOGRAPHERS, AS THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO TEACH YOU THE BUSINESS SIDE OF THE INDUSTRY AS WELL AS THE PRACTICAL SIDE. SMARTPHONES HAVE MADE SHOOTING MUCH EASIER TODAY, EVERYONE THINKS THEY ARE A PHOTOGRAPHER. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TODAY’S VERSION OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT WILL DEVELOP? I THINK IT’S GREAT THAT MORE PEOPLE ARE TAKING PICTURES, ALTHOUGH, I WISH THAT PEOPLE WOULD CONCENTRATE LESS ON SELFIES AND FOCUS ON THE WONDERS AND BEAUTY OF LIFE HAPPENING IN FRONT OF THEM. MANY OF YOUR IMAGES ARE SHOT IN LONDON, DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SPOT OR NEIGHBOURHOOD? YES I DO, FOR ME IT WOULD MOST CERTAINLY BE FLEET STREET AND THE SURROUNDING AREA, THROUGHOUT MY CAREER IT FELT LIKE IT WAS THE CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE.

THE MEMORY OF LADY D LIVES ON, ALSO THANKS TO THE RELEASE OF UNPUBLISHED CONVERSATIONS AND AN EXHIBITION.
32
It is the twenty-year anniversary of the tragic death of a timeless icon. Photobooks, biographies, exhibitions, many and diverse ways to celebrate the woman who was a princess, but also a mother, wife, and volunteer. One tribute to the life of Diana Spencer is the volume Remembering Diana: A life in Photographs by Tina Brown: from her youth to her commitment with Prince Charles, from the birth of Princes William and Harry to her involvement in humanitarian missions and her friendship with personalities such as Nelson Mandela and Elton John. All this through over 100 fabulous pictures, selected from the National Geographic archives. Diana: The People’s Princess: A celebration of Her Life and Legacy 20 Years On is an illustrated ode to one of the most beloved women on the planet. A story through pictures, an updated edition with new materials - including Diana’s Legacy - to forever preserve the memory of a woman who managed to successfully balance motherhood and her humanitarian vocation. Finally, the true story of Lady D is told in the book Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words, featuring the unpublished audio recordings that were kept secret for several years. Her husband’s constant infidelity and indifference, the strict court rules and obligations and the subsequent malaise due to a suffocating way of life: hushed stories of the “sad princess” transcribed by journalist Andrew Morton.

Exhibitions, installations, lectures, screenings, performances, all this and much more during the four days of Frieze Art Fair. At the fifteenth edition of this annual non-profit event, held between the 5th to the 8th of October, London reaffirmed its status as a reference point in the international art scene; surrounded by the autumn colours of Regent’s Park, over 160 world leading art galleries were featured, with over 1000 art works selected by curator Ruba Katrib. The 2017 fair also featured a new themed gallery section devoted to the legacy of radical feminist artists, curated by Alison Gingeras: each artist chose the medium which best conveyed her vision on the topic, either painting, sculpture, video or performance.

THE EARL OF MARCH IS CONSIDERED ONE OF ENGLAND’S MOST SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS. IN JUST A FEW YEARS HE MANAGED TO TRANSFORM THE FAMILY ESTATE IN A PROSPEROUS INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS.
SINCE 1801
EVENT
Every year, around mid September, one hundred and fifty thousand people gather at Goodwood - a magnificent stately mansion in the heart of West Sussex - for a collective plunge into the past. Men wear tweed suits and felt hats, women flaunt fur collars and white gloves, bagpipes resound and the roar of engines is everywhere. Goodwood Revival - which this year took place from September 8 to 10 - isn’t only the greatest vintage car competition in the world: it is a tribute to old-time England, a romantic and glamorous meeting which brings together great pilots and fans for three days of racing between gentlemen. Host of the event is the Earl of March, whose family built the estate in 1690. He is the man who brought his grandfather’s circuit back to life in 1998, resurrecting the one inaugurated by the Ninth Duke of Richmond shortly after the end of World War II. Almost nothing has changed since the glorious fifties and sixties, when champions such as Juan Manuel Fangio competed at high speed on the racetrack: the paddock, the grandstand and the boxes have remained unchanged, much as the spectators, who are all strictly dressed in vintage clothes. However, the true stars of the event, then and now, are the cars: Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, Lotus and Maserati, Jaguar and Aston Martin, winners of legendary races from 1920 to 1966, face each other once again on the speedway in a series of evocative and spectacular races. Adrenaline meets bon-ton, in perfect British style.
