CRUISE WITH PEACE OF MIND

POINT OF VIEW

Journey with Confidence Now more than ever travel is paramount. When the world hit the collective pause button and we were all at home, travel became a mental escape—a beacon of hope amidst the turbulence. Today, as we navigate the world anew, the transformative nature of travel is even more cherished. Discoveries made while exploring new landscapes or returning to emotional touchstones feel all the more vibrant. The ocean breeze? All the more appreciated. That artisan cocktail by a favorite bartender? A bit more tantalizing. And squeezing the hand of your son, daughter, or partner while touching down on the tarmac for your next journey? A truly coveted moment. As you explore further and reconnect with family, friends, and nature, consider us your allies in adventure, delivering peace of mind and security while you get back out there. The world may have shifted, but our perspective remains steadfast: We elevate travel’s life-changing power and lasso your imagination. We are truly honored to be of service to you. We hope these pages deliver inspiration to journey together, with confidence and gratitude.

Va Va, VINTAGE! Photographer Gray Malin launches a new Aspen series, channeling an era of carefree glam. BY E R I N L E N T Z

GRAY MALIN WAS FRESH OFF THE SLOPES WHEN WE MET FOR APRÉS SKI AT ASPEN’S THE LITTLE NELL HOTEL. The fine art photographer, New York Times best-selling

author, and CEO of his namesake brand, Malin was quick to admit he has a serious crush on Aspen. Smitten by the town’s history, beauty, and penchant for glamorous play, he recently launched a new photography series titled “Gray Malin in Aspen,” the result of a week-long shoot depicting his interpretation of alpine society. The result? A vintage take on the pulse of Aspen and Snowmass. Featuring playfully positioned locals and models in classic ski wear and props including vintage Goyard and Louis Vuitton trunks, a 1950s Porsche, and an adorable Bernese Mountain dog (see below), the photos immerse viewers in the ski culture of a beautiful bygone era. His inspiration for the vintage vibe? “My grandparents,” says Malin. “They led a very glamorous life and left nearly 20 photo albums. They traveled to 100 countries and I love looking through those albums. There’s something about that time period—the ‘60s and ‘70s—that makes me tick.”

(Canyon Point, UT) Quietly tucked away amid 600 acres in the Grand Circle of National Parks and Monuments, just 25 minutes from the nearest town of Page, Arizona, Amangiri celebrates Utah’s famous red rock country—the site of countless Hollywood films and artistic inspiration. Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante paints the desert in changing daily hues. Mornings are awash in ochre and orange while sunsets are ablaze with pink-and-red skies. SUITE GPS: Choose from 34 suites, a four-bedroom Mesa Home, or 10 tented pavilions as part of the new Camp Sarika. Undulating dunes, endless plateaus, and floor-toceiling desert views are the design canvas, while white stone floors, concrete walls, natural timbers and blackened steel add singular style. Each suite has an outdoor lounge and fireplace, while some feature a private pool or roof terrace.

BALANCE IT!

Miraval is a launchpad for syncing mind, body, and spirit. BY ERIN LENTZ

AS I BUMPED ALONG THE DIRT ROAD TOWARD MIRAVAL TUCSON, MY ANTICIPATION TO MEET THE FAMOUS WYATT WEBB WAS PALPABLE. Nicknamed

the “horse whisperer,” I’d read Webb’s book and researched the resort’s world-class equine therapy program. My mission was to immerse myself in Miraval’s overarching wellness philosophy: living life in balance, which places purpose and people firmly at its core. What I discovered was not only a serene sanctuary, but a philosophy. As Miraval Director of Spa and Wellbeing Simon Marxer says: “We talk about the ‘day-two shoulder drop.’ People show up for all different reasons, but by day two we see their shoulders drop as they relax.” And on my day two, when I finally met Webb, I was captivated. The biggest takeaway? Intention is everything. So if you intend to unwind at Miraval, expect your experience to be as unique as each of its properties. Every incarnation of Miraval is unified by a common thread: intention, discovery, mindfulness, and authenticity. Here’s what not to miss at Miraval Tucson and Miraval Austin. 10

POLAR PARADISE

Ponant’s Antarctic expeditions bring next-level luxury to the ends of the earth. BY CLARA WOODBRIDGE THERE ARE COUNTLESS REASONS TO GO TO ANTARCTICA, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU SAIL TO THE CONTINENT WITH PONANT. The French cruise operator helms seven polar-class ships, including Le Commandant-Charcot, the first-ever hybridelectric polar exploration ship powered by liquefied natural gas for the most environmentally friendly expedition available. Here, the top five reasons you won’t want to miss it. 1. THE SCENERY. There’s a reason every photograph you’ve seen of Antarctica looks otherworldly: Those pure waters, sparkling glaciers, and clearest-of-blue skies really look like that. No matter what time of day—even at 2 a.m., thanks to the near-24/7 sunlight of summertime cruises—you’ll be glued to the views, watching larger-than-life ice sheets float by and gawking at pods of orcas. 2. THE WILDLIFE. Antarctica is thriving with wildlife—so much so that a cruise can sometimes feel like a waterborne ice safari. Giant humpback whales practically perform for passengers, while penguins are so plentiful, visitors struggle to stay out of their way as the little waddlers venture through “penguin highways.” The circle of life can be seen everywhere, whether it’s clever orcas group-hunting for sea lions or mischievous skuas snatching eggs from unsuspecting penguin parents. 3. THE ZODIAC EXCURSIONS. Some of the best sailing you’ll do in Antarctica will take place on a Zodiac, zipping down glacier alleys and gliding to islands where famous research stations and other landmarks await. Captaining the Zodiacs are Ponant’s naturalists and expedition leaders, who share their expertise, from

facts about the black-browed albatross (known as the “prince of clouds”) to research on receding glaciers and global warming. 4. THE CUISINE. All that exploring creates an appetite and Ponant’s French-focused menus ensure nobody will ever go hungry—or bored. Ducasse Conseil, the catering arm of Alain Ducasse Enterprise, delivers exquisite dining at every meal, especially multi-course dinners where lobster, truffles, and Ponant’s signature voiles chocolat-praliné dessert wow the palate. 5. THE PRE/POST–ADVENTURE. The excitement doesn’t end when you leave the ship. A trip to the Southern Hemisphere opens up other incredible experiences as well, such as a pre- or post-cruise stop in Santiago. Stay at the Hotel Cumbres Lastarria, in the historic, cobblestone-lined Lastarria barrio, which combines the best of Santiago’s artistic flair with charming coffeehouses and bohemian boutiques. Enjoy easy access to the Parque Forestal, one of South America’s most beautiful urban parks and home to two art museums.

Insider Intel Eugene Fuhri, operations manager at Micato Safaris, South Africa, and former head ranger at Sabi Sabi Game Reserve, shares why Zimbabwe and Namibia are the next darlings of the safari space. WHAT UNIQUE WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES CAN GUESTS EXPECT IN THESE DESTINATIONS? Zimbabwe is a birdwatching paradise, home to more than 400 species. You’ll also encounter the Big Five here; the elephant population is delightfully large. In Namibia, you’ll find species that have adapted to the arid climate, like the desert elephant, as well as the endangered black rhino. WHAT ARE CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS OF EACH COUNTRY? In Namibia, travelers have a special opportunity to visit the tribes. In the north, they might meet with a chief of the Himba, a semi-nomadic people in Damaraland. In the west, in the coastal town of Swakopmund, they’ll encounter the Herero, a tribe known for its distinctive, colonial-style clothing. In the south, discover land formations that were formerly a canvas for early bushman rock paintings. The surrounding area is sacred to the local community as it’s also an ancient burial ground for the once ruling tribal kings. WHAT COUNTRIES MAKE GOOD COMPLEMENTS TO EACH DESTINATION? You could add Victoria Falls to your journey to experience the mighty Zambezi River. Any trip to Zimbabwe should include a stay at Victoria Falls, but a Zimbabwe journey is also compatible with water game runs in Botswana. Alternatively, hop over to Namibia to explore the sand dunes of Sossusvlei. U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

Tales of the SOUTH PACIFIC Every sailing with Regent Seven Seas Cruises® is an adventure, especially when you’re plying the waters of the spectacular South Pacific. From city to sea and forest to farm, these incredible 2021 expeditions promise a cruise to remember.

NEW ZEALAND: THE GREAT KIWI GETAWAY

If you want to get to know the spirit of New Zealand, look no further than its quirky national bird, the Kiwi. Hardly the powerful and assertive bald eagle of the United States, the little bird that burrows into the earth and is nearly impossible to spot with the naked eye is every bit the representative mascot—because New Zealand isn’t a country of flash and flair; it’s a quiet beauty, where the locals (known as Kiwis themselves) believe that nothing is worth doing if it isn’t done kindly and genuinely. Sail with Regent on a collection of 2021 cruises that traverse the country’s North and South Islands and you’ll find out for yourself. The stunning Bay of Islands, brimming with secluded bays, estuaries, and mangroves, is a place for hiking through kauri forests, kayaking to uninhabited islands, and discovering the Kawiti Caves illuminated by thousands of tiny glowworms. In Gisborne, visit the rural Maori settlement of Muriwari to watch traditional performances. And in Hawke’s Bay, sip on New Zealand’s award-winning whites and slurp oysters straight from the water. Pro Tip: Don’t leave without some wool—thanks to a very healthy sheep population, local artisans have been weaving the finest blankets, sweaters, and socks for thousands of years.

FRENCH POLYNESIA: THE PEARL OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC

The South Pacific island-nation, which comprises some two million square miles and 118 islands, is so much more than a honeymooner’s hideout. Sail to the paradise on one of Regent’s 2021 itineraries, and you’ll discover adventure in the form of shark expeditions in glass-bottom boats and stingray swims with an expert guide; culture with visits to traditional villages in the remote Taipivai Valley; and experience natural wonders like the underwater caves at Maraa Grottoes on Tahiti. You can even take home a bit of local luxury with a trip to Rangiroa, where black pearl farms offer the opportunity to see the making of these lustrous gemstones, as well as the chance to buy them. With as many as seven islands on Regent’s round-trip Pape’ete itineraries, you’ll also drop anchor at Moorea (the mythical paradise that typifies James Michener’s Bali Hai), Nuku Huva (a volcanic island with mountains topping 3,700 feet high), and Bora Bora. PRO TIP: Wherever your sailing takes you, make sure to tuck a tiare—the fragrant national flower—behind your ear. 24

Place it on the left side if you’re taken, or the right side if you’re still looking for love (and on these enchanting isles, you may just find it).

MELBOURNE: STREET ART & THE CITY

For a second city, Melbourne has a first-class culture scene. The capital of Australia’s Victoria state has what you might call a counter-culture vibe that’s decidedly avant-garde compared with its more established sibling, Sydney. As such, there’s never a dull moment in this city of nearly five million. On all Regent’s itineraries sailing to Australia, you’ll spend the night in port—a must if you want to experience the cocktail and culinary cred that has emerged from the diverse dining scene of neighborhoods like East End and Fitzroy. Find the latest hot spots when you tour the city with a local on an exclusive excursion that takes Regent passengers down the tiny laneways that are home to trendy boutiques and coffee shops. And for some of the

best contemporary art, there’s no need to step foot in a gallery or museum—right there, splashed across brick and mortar on nearly every corner and street and tucked away in alleys, a vibrant world of burgeoning street art is begging to be discovered. PRO TIP: Of all the colorfully graffitied nooks and crannies in the city, Holster Lane is by far the most impressive. Take in its kaleidoscope of murals in the early morning to have it all to yourself.

GREAT BARRIER REEF: A WHALE OF AN ADVENTURE

The most famous resident of the Great Barrier Reef may also be the loneliest. Migaloo, a pure white adult humpback whale, is considered to be one of just a few of this species alive today—some even say the giant marine mammal is the only of his kind—but his rarity makes him even more beloved. Sail with the Regent on one of its 2021 Australia-bound itineraries and you might give Migaloo some much-needed company, along with the other incredible marine life that call the world’s largest coral reef system home. Catch a glimpse of it all with a ride on an aqua bus, skirting palm-lined beaches and

lush rainforests in your pursuit of Migaloo. Or take to the skies for an aerial safari where you’ll soar over stunning reef compositions. Those who want a deeper immersion can travel by catamaran to an exclusive pontoon floating atop the Outer Reef, where they can snorkel, scuba, or go way down in a submersible among colorful fish. Whether you’re whirling above or water bound, the Coral Sea is so clear you’ll have a good chance of seeing all of the Great Barrier Reef’s underwater inhabitants. PRO TIP: For a romantic, high-flying sojourn, ask your helicopter pilot to swing over Heart Reef, a coral isle shaped like—you guessed it—a heart.

Lindblad Expeditions takes passengers on a true explorer’s journey via incredible Antarctic voyages. BY CLARA WOODBRIDGE Zodiacs Photo by: Michael S. Nolan; Penguins: Andrew Peacock; Sunset: Ralph Lee Hopkins; Ship: Adam Cropp

Opposite: Zodiacs take explorers to Instagram-worthy landscapes. Clockwise from top: A playful penguin parade; sunset calls for cocktails and cameras; the beauty of vast ice sheets and open ocean.

SVEN LINDBLAD WAS PRACTICALLY BORN AN EXPLORER. The CEO of Lindblad Expeditions is the son of Lars-Eric Lindblad, the Swedish-American pioneer who led the first non-scientific expeditions to Antarctica and the Galápagos Islands— and the younger Lindblad has been following in his father’s fabled footsteps since his earliest days. He spent six years as a photographer and filmmaker in East Africa. He’s pioneered responsible travel in far-flung places like the South Pacific. He’s even had an insect named after him, the moth Undulambia lindbladi. Lindblad Expeditions has partnered with National Geographic on several initiatives, including building the National Geographic Endurance, the world’s preeminent polar expedition vessel, for which Lindblad (the CEO) has created some of the most immersive Antarctic expeditions ever. Guests can experience the continent with the same amazement he did on his very first expedition decades ago. “I didn’t sleep for two days, I was so mesmerized as our ship crunched through sea ice,” he recalls of that trip.

Passengers aboard Lindblad Expeditions’ 2021 and 2022 Antarctic itineraries will no doubt understand that sentiment as they ply the least traveled waters in the world. Every itinerary includes the built-in bragging rights that come with crossing the Drake Passage, a legendary stretch of sea considered a milestone in any explorer’s journal, with endless opportunities to photograph albatrosses and other wild birds. As the landscapes grow icier with each nautical mile, the Southern Continent and its islands slowly emerge, from South Georgia Island and its millions of resident penguins, all the way down to the Ross Ice Shelf, a rarely visited part of the continent accessible on the 32-night Epic Antarctica: The Peninsula to the Ross Sea itinerary. Along the way, Lindblad promises close-up encounters with majestic glaciers and breathtaking mountains that surge for thousands of feet and breathtaking moments in the presence of wonderous creatures like orcas and blue whales. These experiences, the explorer says, make Lindblad Expeditions’ Antarctica sailings true journeys, akin to his, and his father’s, own adventures. “Genuine encounters with beauty and wildness are the difference between wonderful and extraordinary,” he says. “My advice is to get out and explore. Inhabit the wildness. Hear the silence.” Sea Me. Explore untrammeled wilderness by visiting the website found on the back cover and entering OFFER M21721.

GO LONG…AND WIDE: To capture the crevasses of an iceberg or the details of a penguin’s black-and-white coat, you’ll need a zoom lens, but don’t forget the power of a wide-angle lens. Landscapes in Antarctica are vast, and shooting with a 24-mm lens or wider allows you to capture foreground, middle ground, and background—all breathtaking elements in one photo. FILTER YOURSELF: Every moment promises a new perspective, thanks to the ever-changing light during Antarctic summers. To combat direct sunlight— not to mention all that sun bouncing off white, snowy surfaces—invest in a polarizing filter for clarity and sharpness. It will also bring out the intense blue tones of icebergs. HAVE PATIENCE: With so much to capture, most novice photographers snap away with abandon. Instead, think quality over quantity—ponder your photo before hitting the shutter. If you are able to, view your subject from alternate angles. And consider perspective: A photo of a whale, for instance, is much more impressive with an iceberg in the background for scale. Once you’ve found your shot, click away.

Conch fritters and cassava fries are island staples, while a rum bar boasts the largest selection in the Virgin Islands. Beer lovers should try the Turtle IPA, crafted onsite at the solar-powered brewery.

SCRUB ISLAND

When you dock at Scrub Island, you’re a guest of the entire island, which means you can take advantage of the incredible amenities. Book an afternoon at the Ixora Spa, perched high above the Caribbean Sea. And with three on-island restaurants, your palate will be pampered, too.

Located at the southernmost tip of the archipelago, this tiny jewel in the BVI is reputed to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s famed novel, Treasure Island. The only way to reach the Norman Island Caves—where many believe Blackbeard hid his treasures—is by boat. Your snorkel excursion may not turn up gold, but you will see plenty of tropical fish and cup corals.

TORTOLA

The largest island in the BVI, Tortola is dotted with secluded palm-shaded beaches such as Long Bay Beach, Smuggler’s Cove, and Apple Bay. If you crave a little more action, head to Cane Garden Bay, known for tasty restaurants and a vibrant night life. Surfers can paddle out at Josiah’s Bay, a rarely crowded spot with great waves and a handful of beach bars waiting back on shore.

JOST VAN DYKE

Experience the beach bars on White Bay on Jost Van Dyke. Sail near the dock of Diamond Cay, National Park, known for incredible reefs, then follow the beach trail past mangroves and wild sage bushes until you reach a small beach. When the surf breaks against the rocky outcroppings, it creates a natural whirlpool. Foxy’s Taboo restaurant is right near the trail head. Pop in after your adventure to try the signature rum punch.

VIRGIN GORDA

Take a step back in time and visit Copper Mine National Park, which features the ruins of an abandoned 19th-century copper mine. Explore granite rock outcroppings, with additional deposits of quartz, feldspars, tin copper and other clay minerals. Mine Hill is the habitat for the white-tailed tropicbirds that nest in the rocky cliffs by the sea and close to the Cornish Engine House. Departing from their seaside nests, they dive from incredible heights in order to feed on marine species.

Parasite brought South Korea to Hollywood. Now Americans are heading to Seoul to take in more of the landmark film. BY CLARA WOODBRIDGE

THE 2019 SOUTH KOREAN FILM PARASITE ACHIEVED A CINEMATIC MILESTONE FOR DIRECTOR BONG JOONHO’S HOME COUNTRY—NOT ONLY AS THE FIRST NONENGLISH FILM TO WIN THE BEST PICTURE ACADEMY AWARD, BUT AS A STUNNING SHOWCASE OF THE DUALITIES THAT MAKE UP ITS CAPITAL CITY. Seoul is more than a setting for the movie; it’s a character in its own right, in the story of two families—the wealthy Parks and the impoverished Kims—whose lives become dangerously intertwined. As an outsider looking in, this city of nearly 10

40

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

million can certainly seem an overwhelming place of contrasts, its famous alleyways and neon-lit boulevards a chaotic juxtaposition to its quiet outskirt villages. And Parasite profoundly captures both of these settings as it straddles the two worlds in which its main characters live. Joon-Ho reveals many secrets of Seoul in his film, from the urban Buam-dong neighborhood to the suburb of Seongbuk-

A Parasite Pilgrimage Three more stops on a Seoul film tour. SKY PIZZA Known as “Pizza Generation” in the film, this is the restaurant where the Kim family folds pizza boxes for extra income. Clockwise from left: South Korea’s Seoul Tower; Andong Hahoe Village; Gyeongbokgung Palace; the Haenyeo Museum.

dong. The latter is the setting for the Park family’s home, a village north of the city center peppered with luxury homes, art museums, and cafes. While the Parks’ midcentury-modern glass-walled home no longer stands (it was constructed solely for the movie and demolished after filming wrapped), its residential scenery reveals a side of Seoul many tourists have never seen. Along its serene streets are several museums—including the Korea Furniture Museum and the Korean Stone Art Museum—as well as the sprawling green Samcheong Park and the Gyeongbokgung Palace, one of the most important royal palaces in the city. Make time to venture out of Seoul for a day trip to the Haenyeo Museum, located on Jeju Island, which exhibits local fishing culture. And the Andong Hahoe Village (in the city of Andong), is a traditional village from the Joseon Dynasty.

Parasite explores the urban side of Seoul as well, most notably in the district of Buam-dong, where the stairs of Jahamun Tunnel serve as the backdrop for the film’s pivotal scene, when the Kim family flees after a shocking discovery in the Park family’s basement. The stairs are mammoth—as intimidating in real life as they appear in the film—but they actually sit in in the middle of a thriving neighborhood: A visit to the site puts you within walking distance of the Seoul Museum and its historic villa, once the royal abode of Heungseon Daewongun, father of Emperor Gojong. Be sure to visit the coffee shops, dumpling houses, and even a chopstick gallery in this eclectic little neighborhood.

Digital Download. Korea is Calling.

ULKEUNI KING NAENGMYEON In the Mapo district, known for its quirky shops and rooftop bars, this noodle joint serving traditional Naengmyeon is portrayed as a typical Gisa sikdang (a restaurant that serves taxi drivers) where the Kim family surreptitiously slurps on their dinner and plans to find work with the well-to-do Park family. DOIJISSAL SUPERMARKET With a name that translates to “pig rice” you know you’re in for some authentic local delicacies at this little market. Called Woori Supermarket in the film, it’s the location of an early scene in which young Ki Woo, sipping on soju, learns of a potential parttime tutoring job with the Park family.

IGNACIO MAZA ventures to ISTANBUL, TURKEY, where he discovers an enchanting land at the crossroads of an ancient world.

52 U LTGrand I M AT Bazaar. E EXPERIENCES Istanbul’s

REMEMBER WATCHING THE FILM TOPKAPI WHEN I WAS EIGHT YEARS OLD. It told a story of

an elaborate heist to steal a priceless, emerald-studded dagger from Istanbul’s palace museum, and it had a lasting impression on me. I decided then and there that I would someday visit the fabled city. Years later, on my first trip to Turkey, I headed straight to Topkapi’s treasury. I was enchanted, as my wish had come true and because Istanbul was so much more than I had ever imagined. This year, I returned once again—and Istanbul was my first stop. Few cities in the world deliver wonder like Istanbul. Where Asia meets Europe, this monumental metropolis has a rich history spanning nearly 3,000 years. Istanbul was an imperial capital for 16 centuries, first the center of the Byzantine Empire and richest city in Christendom, and then later home to powerful Ottoman Sultans. At its height, the Ottoman Empire stretched from the gates of Vienna to the shores of the Persian Gulf. After World War I, the empire collapsed, and Turkey became a republic. Istanbul is no longer the capital, but it remains the country’s largest city, where its arts and culture define Turkey’s global reputation. While the name has changed over the years from Byzantium to Constantinople to Istanbul, the city is unquestionably one of the great harbors of the world—and is as vibrant, authentic, and mythical as ever.

SAVOR SULTANAHMET

Begin your discoveries in Sultanahmet, the oldest district of Istanbul and home to an unmatched concentration of historical riches. Make Hagia Sophia, the Church of Holy Wisdom, your first stop. For a thousand years, this architectural marvel was the largest building in the world. The cathedral was converted into a mosque in the 15th century, and then turned into a museum in the 1930s, and recently became a mosque once again. Walk the ramps to the second floor and wander along the galleries for a unique perspective of the massive dome and beautiful mosaics. Be sure to visit Topkapi Palace, the residence of powerful sultans for 400 years—and home to the famous Topkapi dagger featured in the beloved film! A series of gates and leafy courtyards lead to the royal pavilions, stone representations of the tented encampments of the nomadic Ottomans. Don’t miss the harem, library, exhibitions, and the kitchens, which at one time fed thousands of people. Topkapi’s terraces frame spectacular views of the Bosphorus and Asian shore, and look down over the rail tracks U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

that wrap around the palace and end at nearby Sirkeci station, the terminus of the famous Orient-Express train. Continue along to the imperial Blue Mosque (the only one in Turkey with six minarets), which takes its name from the interior blue Iznik tiles and displays intricate patterns on its dome and ceilings (tip: return at night, when it’s backlit and appears most magical). Sultanahmet is a treasure trove of antiquities. Stroll its narrow streets and witness the Archaeological Museum and Ottoman fountains. The Basilica Cistern, a vast underground reservoir that provided Istanbul with fresh water, is one of Sultanahmet’s most unusual sites. Explore its underground boardwalks, which wrap around nearly 300 marble columns. Listening to the trickling water and classical music as you walk the cavernous interior is simply unforgettable. For a different take, visit the recently renovated Theodosius Cistern, which is now an art gallery. From Sultanahmet, walk over to the Grand Bazaar, the oldest shopping mall in the world and a labyrinth of passageways, shops, and alleys. I prefer the smaller and more manageable Spice Bazaar, where you can find every spice, herb, and food imaginable, including varieties of lokum, a sweet Turkish delicacy.

Opposite, clockwise from top left: The Archaeological Museum; Turkish delights; underground water reservoir at the Basilica Cistern; Istanbul’s Topkapi palace.

MOSQUE HOPPING

There are more than 3,000 mosques in Istanbul. My two recommendations? First, the splendid Süleymaniye Mosque, considered the city’s largest and most important one. A masterpiece created by Mimar Sinan, Turkey’s greatest imperial architect, the mosque features soaring spaces and is surrounded by a library, hospital, caravanserai, and many notable tombs, including those of Sinan, Süleyman the Magnificent, and his wife, Roxelana. I also relished the Rüstem Pasha Mosque, a more intimate space decorated with exquisite Iznik tiles that blanket the walls. Make time for lunch at nearby Hamdi restaurant, which features superb views of the city and delicious meals. Before crossing the Galata Bridge, explore the Church of St. Savior in Chora, featuring some of the finest Byzantine mosaics and murals, especially the dome that displays Christ and his ancestors.

THE BEST OF BEYOĞLU

Beyoğlu, the shore opposite Sultanahmet, was formerly the cosmopolitan European enclave where Genoese, Catalonians, Jews, and Greeks lived and traded. Today

it remains a bustling commercial district. Walk the length of Istlikal Cadessi, Istanbul’s premier pedestrian avenue, or ride the vintage tram to experience the city. Witness whirling dervishes perform at Mevlevi Monastery and wander around the up-and-coming Karakoy neighborhood. Continue uphill through a bohemian neighborhood of galleries and cafés to reach the Galata Tower, built by the Genoese more than 700 years ago. Ride the elevator to the top of the tower and take in some of the best views of Istanbul. A short drive away, Dolmabahçe Palace is Turkey’s version of Versailles. This opulent royal residence marks the beginning of the fall of the Ottoman dynasty; it opened in 1856 and nearly bankrupted the Sultan. A guided visit will take you through colossal halls and sumptuous interiors. I was struck by the grand, Baccarat crystal-designed staircase and the ceremonial hall, which could accommodate more than 2,000 guests beneath the world’s largest chandelier.

Across the Bosphorus, you’ll discover the Asian side of Istanbul—quieter, suburban, and off-the-beaten path. Explore neighborhoods with time-honored wooden houses, enjoy a traditional meal, or stroll the seaside to catch a glimpse of the old city and Leander’s Tower, sentinel of the strait. Don’t miss Beylerbeyi Palace, the summer residence of the Sultans and a must for history buffs. Istanbul is also a shopper’s Mecca. For antiques, head to the Ҫ Çukurcuma district for Ottoman treasures and 20th-century finds. If you’re on the hunt for highend and elegant pieces, visit the shops at Nişantasi and Bebek. And nothing beats haggling in the Grand Bazaar. Still, no visit to Istanbul is complete without experiencing a Turkish bath, the centuries-old ritual. One of the best and most impressive is Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamami, also built by the brilliant architect Sinan. And please do not worry. The famous Topkapi dagger which entranced me as child is still safely on display at the palace treasury, waiting for your visit.

Situated on a hill and surrounded by acres of historic gardens, Swissotel The Bosphorus Istanbul offers extensive facilities and diverse guestroom options, including spacious, two-story apartments. Newcomer Raffles Istanbul is a modern, luxurious high-rise in the heart of the Zorlu Center. Istanbul’s next-generation luxury bazaar is where fashion, fine dining, and the arts converge. The intimate Shangri-La Istanbul has earned a loyal following for its impeccable service, fine dining, and guestrooms overlooking the Bosphorus. POSTCARD FROM …

ANNA PINTO,

Executive Director of MicatoAmericaShare

WISH-LIST TRIP: Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Bhutan. I’ve heard Hollywood producers describe Tiger’s Nest as “Shangri-La meets mystical Star Wars planet,” which is not wrong, but it’s so much more than that. Imagine climbing up forested hillsides and through lush green fields as this stunning monastery grows closer and closer. I’ve heard that when the wind blows, the prayer flags flutter and the air fills with the smell of magnolias, rhododendrons, and dwarf bamboo from the valley. (Micato India arranges journeys to the Kingdom of Bhutan.) CURRENT OBSESSION: Elvis. And not just current. The King is an all-thetime obsession, along with the always magnificent Ladysmith Black Mambazo of South Africa. I’D MOST LIKE TO DINE WITH: Nelson Mandela, a man who was unjustly imprisoned for 27 years yet had it in his heart to forgive his jailers. It was also Mandela who said that “education is the most powerful weapon to change the world,” which is our guiding principle at Micato-AmericaShare. NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT: Stuff sacks. They keep any bag (especially a safari 64

duffel!) well organized and can be used forever. And if you buy them in different colors, you can color-code your packing, making it easy to find what you’re looking for and eliminating the need to repack. WHY ARE MICATO-AMERICASHARE’S PROGRAMS EVEN MORE CRITICAL TODAY? Micato’s nonprofit arm, AmericaShare, was actually founded during a pandemic. Decades ago, we decided to focus our attention on the impoverished women and children in the Mukuru slum of Nairobi, Kenya, whose lives had been impacted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Then, as now, we felt strongly that the most effective way to bring lasting, sustainable change to Mukuru was through education. Our School Sponsorship Programme, for instance, matches orphaned or vulnerable children with generous Micato travelers and travel advisors who sponsor the children to attend boarding school. MicatoAmericaShare also works closely with Huru—established by AmericaShare co-founder Lorna Macleod—which, in the process of manufacturing reusable sanitary pads, also employs and trains women in the community. As we navigate through another pandemic, I can’t think

of a time when bringing education and economic empowerment to women has been more important. YOUR BIGGEST LEARNING AMIDST COVID-19? Where there’s a will, there’s always a way. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Huru continues to manufacture reusable sanitary pads (to date nearly 1,400,000 pads have been distributed in free Huru Kits to more than 175,000 girls in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda), and almost overnight converted some of its production lines to make reusable face masks. One of the silver linings of the crisis is that it has not been a pause for work: Huru has been able to employ 55 people to manufacture pads and masks as well as 200 ambassadors to distribute 100,000 masks. WHEN I’M NOT WORKING YOU’LL FIND ME: On safari. Wherever in the world I am, my heart leads me back to Africa’s game lands, where you can sit for hours watching herds of elephants, dazzles of zebras, as well as cheetahs, gazelles, wildebeest, giraffes, lions, rhinos … and say absolutely nothing, relishing the stillness and almost eternal quiet of the bush.

TRAVEL. EXPERIENCE. LEARN. REPEAT.
