NORMAN ISLAND
Located at the southernmost tip of the archipelago, this tiny jewel in the BVI is reputed to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s famed novel, Treasure Island. The only way to reach the Norman Island Caves—where many believe Blackbeard hid his treasures—is by boat. Your snorkel excursion may not turn up gold, but you will see plenty of tropical fish and cup corals.
TORTOLA
The largest island in the BVI, Tortola is dotted with secluded palm-shaded beaches such as Long Bay Beach, Smuggler’s Cove, and Apple Bay. If you crave a little more action, head to Cane Garden Bay, known for tasty restaurants and a vibrant night life. Surfers can paddle out at Josiah’s Bay, a rarely crowded spot with great waves and a handful of beach bars waiting back on shore.
JOST VAN DYKE
Experience the beach bars on White Bay on Jost Van Dyke. Sail near the dock of Diamond Cay, National Park, known for incredible reefs, then follow the beach trail past mangroves and wild sage bushes until you reach a small beach. When the surf breaks against the rocky outcroppings, it creates a natural whirlpool. Foxy’s Taboo restaurant is right near the trail head. Pop in after your adventure to try the signature rum punch.
VIRGIN GORDA
Take a step back in time and visit Copper Mine National Park, which features the ruins of an abandoned 19th-century copper mine. Explore granite rock outcroppings, with additional deposits of quartz, feldspars, tin copper and other clay minerals. Mine Hill is the habitat for the white-tailed tropicbirds that nest in the rocky cliffs by the sea and close to the Cornish Engine House. Departing from their seaside nests, they dive from incredible heights in order to feed on marine species.
