It’s not necessarily a bad thing to look ahead. Just make sure you’re also taking a look around.
It seems sometimes like we don’t really live in the moment anymore. We’re always looking ahead to that next big trip, that next party, that next project to work on. I know I’m guilty of it at times.
And if you’re reading this, odds are good you’re in the middle of a vacation that you have spent the last few weeks and months planning. I’m sure you’ve snuck a few minutes of company time in the leadup to your trip to check review websites, scout out great activities to experience while you’re here and see where all the best restaurants are (by following Taste of Hilton Head on social media, of course).
It’s likely been a lot of looking ahead on your part. And now that you’re here, I urge you to shift that focus back to the present. You’ve made it! Now you get to enjoy the fruits of all that planning as you relax in an island paradise. As Ferris Bueller said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
And not to sound like a curmudgeon, but it feels like we’re missing a lot these days. The technological marvel of your smartphone puts the entire universe of information at your fingertips, nearly infinite knowledge available in an instant. But mostly, it seems like it exists to give people a place to retreat to. I see people at the golf course, on the street, in restaurants and worst of all while driving, faces buried in the screen’s comforting glow.
But here, surrounded by the beauty of Hilton Head Island, and all the attractions, dining and fun that entails, it’s worth giving the phone a rest. Look out from behind that tiny screen and you’ll find one of the most perfect spots on the planet surrounding you.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 40 years since Truffles first opened its doors. And no one feels that more than Price Beall, owner of the famed restaurant with his wife Karen.
“It feels like yesterday,” he said. “We all love what we do, so I look forward to going to work every day. I don’t even think of it as work.”
It may not feel like work, but what they’ve created over four decades at Truffles could be considered the Bealls’ life work.
Launched 40 years ago when Price’s brother Sandy, founder of Ruby Tuesdays, struck up a chance conversation with Sea Pines icon Charles Fraser. Truffles quickly established itself as a south-end standby. Although that first iteration of the concept may not seem familiar to today’s diners.
“When we opened, we were a true market café,” said Price. “It was like a mini Zabar’s in New York.”
Where the bar now sits at the Sea Pines Center location, refrigerated glass cases displayed prepared salads, meats and cheeses. This concept proved popular, but growing competition from grocery stores made the market’s future risky.
“I think maybe we were a little ahead of our time,” said Price.
Thankfully, when the decision was made to switch concepts, customers welcomed the change. “
As much fun as it is to work at Truffles, a visit can be even more enjoyable, as generations of locals and visitors have proven.
That change would be the first of many over 40 years, as Truffles found its casual dining footing through tenures as a bakery café, short term grill and a market café (again). “We’ve always been quick to realize what we need to change,” said Price.
That has allowed the Bealls to take the long view on what Truffles was at the time and what it could be, a perspective that has sustained the restaurant while so many others have shuttered. Weathering everything from island-wide downturns to recent skyrocketing food costs. “You keep going, and you can either cut the quality of the product you bring in which we’ve never done, or can adjust and still offer great quality with good value,” said Price.
It’s a sound business strategy that has bred a healthy longevity at Truffles, both in Sea Pines and in the Bluffton location which opened in 2000. And while staying in business for that long has certainly proven rewarding, when Price and Karen Beall talk about their
business’ life span, they don’t talk in terms of wins and losses. You’ll hear about the stories they’ve been able to be a part of over 40 years.
Sitting in the grand window-lined dining room of the Sea Pines location, a spot that has been indoor and outdoor dining in its lifetime, not to mention a rainbow of different colors over countless renovations, the Bealls just see great moments that happened here.
“I get to watch people make memories,” said Karen. “It’s a really wonderful thing to be a part of. We’ve been a part of so many celebrations, and we have so many great people on our team who have been here for so many of those celebrations.”
She points to long-time employees and now operating business partners, like Fernando and Heather Lossada who met as employees. Jeannine Gleason who is the General Manager of the Bluffton location, and so many more team members who have called Truffles home for years. You could say that the Bealls have spent 40 years building a business, but that would only tell half the story. What they’ve really built is memories; thousands of them. You probably have a few of your own. Most people around here do.
“I’m very thankful to be in this community,” said Price. “I met my wife here, my kids grew up here… over 40 years I’ve been able to meet so many people in our community, and they have truly supported us.”
With the 40th anniversary in July we decided it was time for a fresh look, we’ve been remodelling both locations. Just expect the same thing you’ve been expecting for 40 years – great food in an atmosphere that has come to define Hilton Head Island.

Sometimes the history of CQ’s can get a little… murky. That’s bound to happen after 50 years as one of the most iconic restaurants on an island known for its iconic restaurants. Myths start to build up about a place, tall tales that can neither be confirmed nor denied. Stories of good times held at this Harbour Town restaurant tend to start out big, then get only grander as time goes by.
“It’s kind of the history of Hilton Head Island going back to when Charles Fraser was first developing it,” said owner Bonnie Lowrey, surveying the decades of newspaper clippings, photos and artwork that adorn the walls of the historic building. “When we bought the restaurant, we wanted to make sure we
kept it as it was… it’s timeless.”
In telling the history of CQ’s, it can be a bit difficult at time to separate fact from fiction. Stories swirl around the building of the “blue lady,” the spirit of a lighthouse keeper’s daughter who died during a great storm, only to spend eternity wandering Harbour Town. Those… may not be true. But the stories of CQ’s origins as artist Ralph Ballantine’s studio, one of the first buildings erected in Harbour Town, are all true.
As are the stories of the restaurants early days as a haven for artists, an incubator for some of the Lowcountry’s most celebrated culinary talents and as a hangout spot for just about everyone at one point or another.
“I don’t think we really knew how much history there was when we first bought it. That appreciation only grew as we learned more about it,” said Lowrey. Plenty of visits to the Heritage Library archives, plus assistance from long-time islanders like Ruthe Edwards, helped fill in the gaps.
But merely existing for 50 years isn’t what makes this anniversary so special for CQ’s. It’s the indelible role the restaurant has played on Hilton Head Island and the people who call it home.
“I think it really comes down to the people who have been a part of the restaurant over the years,” said Lowrey. “The people who brought their families here where the children are
now bringing their own children in… everyone left their mark here. If these walls could talk they would tell great stories.”
Fortunately, the walls don’t need to. Over the course of 50 years, CQ’s has plenty of guests and employees, former and current, who can supply stories. “I can’t imagine putting together the list of chefs, servers, managers who have been a part of this place,” said Lowrey. “So many people came here, fell in love with the island and stayed. It’s been a great breeding ground for talent.”
One great example of a superstar CQ’s employee who made their own mark is John “Jumpy” Griffin, who tended the small bar at CQ’s back when it was tucked under the stairs. “I met my wife Susan while working there,” he said. “During that time in our lives, the island was still new. It was a special time.”
A young bartender on an island of just a few thousand people, Griffin talks of a CQ’s that was quite different than today’s fine dining experience, one where burgers, seafood crepes and “appetizers that half the people who
ordered didn’t know what to do with,” according to Griffin.
“Jim Paris ran the kitchen at one point, and one night he had this chicken dish he was doing as a special but he didn’t know what to call it.” Said Griffin. The name Chicken Nasus was selected, being Susan’s name spelled backward. “One guy ordered it and said, ‘This is the best chicken nasus I’ve ever had, and I’ve had it in a lot of different places.”
Griffin’s biggest culinary claim to fame would be Jump & Phils, the long-time south-end establishment he owned for decades with partner Phil Henry.
“We tried to model Jump n Phil’s off of the feeling of CQ’s when we worked there,” said Griffin. “Those times were so carefree, that’s what we wanted to emulate.”
Lisa “Bernie” Bernstein, who has gained her own fame on the island as chef extraordinaire at Baby Cakes, has her own CQ’s stories, even though technically she only worked there in an emergency. Facing the impending arrival of Hurricane Bertha in 1996, Bernstein
got the call while working at Old Fort Pub to come across town and help keep CQ’s open to feed those who had stayed.
“The only employees available were me, Scott Venrick, Bonnie and Pierce (Lowrey) and a few other people,” said Bernstein. “Bonnie made salads, Pierce did dishes and we got slammed.”
Still, with most islanders facing a fourhour trip off the island to evacuate, that simple act of hospitality made a huge difference. “It was a lot of fun and we laughed the whole time because none of us knew what we were doing,” said Bernstein.
It’s one of a million stories that people can tell you about CQ’s. But that’s just what happens when you occupy a unique slice of a resort island coming into its own, create something and shepherd it through 50 years of growth and evolution. You make memories.

For an island as famed for its laid-back reputation, Hilton Head has a hustle culture like nowhere else. People here work a little harder in order to live in paradise, but that life is its own reward. In short, we work hard, but we play even harder.
The “New Guy” at The Sage Room talks summer drinks, life behind the bar and juggling a new baby and a successful business.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTO BY ROB KAUFMANBartender Ed Sealy is a perfect example of this. The “new guy” at The Sage Room, he’s been slinging drinks at the fine dining destination for a little over a year, but his time behind the bar goes back more than 20 years.
“I learned to bartend on the back deck of The Old Oyster Factory under Jim Uremovich, who’s the director of golf at Old South now,” he said. “After that I was at the Smokehouse back when it was at Coligny, at Harbourside at Harbour Town and then about two years at Nick’s Steak and Seafood.”
But like most people in food and beverage who call Hilton Head Island home, hospitality has long been a side hustle for Ed. He spent 15 years as a golf pro, where “unless you’re head pro, you’re not getting rich,” he said. After a brief move to Dallas, he came back to the island where the F&B world welcomed him back. These days, he splits his time between the bar at Sage Room and Conviction Training Facility, the gym he’s owned since 2018.
The gym pays the bills, but when Ed welcomed his son E.J., he quickly realized that it was time to get back behind the taps. “As we looked into daycare prices, it became more of a need than a want,” he said with a laugh. “Having a son is awesome, but I want this kid to live the good life.”
As luck would have it, Ed was looking to get back into bartending just as The Sage Room was looking to add staff after expanding their bar. “They went from six seats and a wine room to 12 seats at the bar right during Heritage week last year,” he
said. “Marquis (Terry, General Manager) was running it on his own all week and realized he could use some help… I just called randomly to ask if they were hiring and they asked, ‘What are you doing tonight?’”
He fell right back into bartending with ease. “I’m working four nights a week now, and honestly it’s the best F&B job I’ve ever had on this island. Between Matt and Carol (Jording, the owners) setting the tone, our chefs and the folks I work with, I’ve never worked with a staff who works as well as a team as they do,” he said. “It’s about as perfect a scenario as I can imagine.”
And it didn’t take him long to shake the rust off and get back up to speed behind the bar.
“Being more fine dining, martinis and wine are the top sellers, but we do a ton of old fashions even through we’re out of winter because we have such a good bourbon selection,” he said. Heading into summer, Ed is enjoying the new drinks that have expanded the menu along with the expanded bar. “We have a pear tree martini that’s really popular, and the Bulrush Gin blood orange bellini is a really good drink – super refreshing, it’s perfect for summer and we get to showcase local gin.”
And since the Sage Room doesn’t entertain the late-night crowd that Ed cut his teeth on, he’s able to get home every night and spend a little time with his son and fiancé before hitting the hay to be ready to open the gym at 5 a.m
“Fortunately, I’ve always had a pretty solid drive to work… being told what to do always came naturally,” he said. “The only real adjustment has been getting out at 9 or 10 p.m. with that buzz of excitement still going and trying to wind down knowing that alarm is going off at 4:10 a.m.”
It takes a little extra work to call the island home, but ask Ed Sealy and he’ll tell you, it’s worth every second.

There’s a certain romance to a picnic on the beach. The steady ocean breezes keeping insects at bay, the sun keeping your food nice and toasty, the salt air adding that subtle hint of flavor to every bite… it can be magic.
It can also be a nightmare, if you don’t know what you’re doing. That same breeze can scatter napkins, that sun can quickly turn your potato salad and with that salt air comes plentiful sand, and that stuff gets everywhere.
So to help make your next oceanfront meal an unforgettable experience for all the right reasons, allow us to be your guide for creating the ultimate beach picnic. Fortunately, one of the island’s best beaches just happens to have some one-stop-shopping just across the street at Coligny Plaza.
Piggly Wiggly has been an island mainstay for decades, not just for the groceries and sundries that the chain is known for, but for its section devoted to beach gear. “That was always my dad’s favorite part of the store – we have so much stuff,” said owner David Martin, whose father Gene founded “The Pig” in 1969.
If you’re going to do a beach picnic right, that has to be your first stop. Among the boogie boards and sunglasses, you’ll find a fresh towel to serve as your blanket, koozies to keep your beverages icy, umbrellas to shade your less sun-friendly fare and all the plasticware and paper towels you’ll need.
But a picnic is more than just towels and umbrellas. The key ingredient here is the food. Or at least the right food. The sand and sun of the beach can make some items non-starters. Don’t try to get too fancy with anything you’ll have to prepare – if
you’re doing cold cut sandwiches, have them ready to go before you arrive. And unless you have one of those expensive designer coolers, just now that anything mayonnaise-based is going to be a roll of the dice after a few hours.
And as a word to the wise – The Town of Hilton Head Island doesn’t allow open flames on the beach. Whether a propane grill constitutes an open flame will vary from one member of beach patrol to the next, so play it safe and keep your picnic readymade.
Fortunately, as long as you’re already at The Pig for all of your beach gear, you can pick up a few dishes to go. And on that count, Martin has a few suggestions based on his decades of serving picnickers headed to Coligny beach.
“What’s always been surprisingly popular is our steamed local shrimp,” he said. Head back to the deli to grab-and-go some peel-and-eat, prepared simply with hot water and Old Bay. “It’s like a fantasy for some people to just sit on the beach and peel shrimp. Sitting there with shrimp juice on your hands, you really get to know somebody.”
And if you really want an authentic Southern beach picnic, you have to pick up some goober peas, aka boiled peanuts. “If you like them, then you are southern,” said Martin. “They’re in season now through August and we just got our first delivery today.” And now equipped with all the right beach gear and grub, it’s time to get out there, claim your spot of sand and fill your belly on the beach.

Aaaaah summer! We’ve been waiting for warmer days, sunny skies, and enjoying all the island has to offer. Summer is a time that I find myself being so grateful every day for the beauty of this island home. With all that we welcome of this wonderful season, summer gives us unique challenges and benefits when it comes to our health and wellness.
Due to the increased temperatures and our proclivity to be outside more, there are a few key tweaks we need to make to our wellness routines to stay in tip-top shape. We need to stay hydrated, to get enough rest, and to counter our vices with habits that help us recover and stay balanced.
We know that summer means more time being sweaty, which makes hydration a more important factor in our day. And oftentimes drinking water is not enough. We need the water but we need the electrolytes and micronutrients as well that help that water do its job internally. The best way to accomplish this is to eat your hydration! Mother Nature packs seasonal foods with exactly what we need to retain hydration in the right amount. Try one of these summer salads that are packed with fun flavors AND hydration-rich foods.
Ingredients:
1 pound watermelon, cut into 1-inch cubes
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
1/4 cup chopped mint
1/4 cup chopped red onion
1/4 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons lime juice
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions:
1. In a large bowl, combine the watermelon, feta cheese, mint, and red onion.
2. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lime juice, salt, and pepper.
3. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss to coat.
4. Serve immediately.
Things like alcohol, coffee, and other caffeine heavy beverages can work against your hydration goals as well. Consider switching up some of these beverage choices with a drink that will help you retain hydration, improve gut health, and give you a burst of energy without the negative side effects.
Ingredients:
1 cup water
1 inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
1 tablespoon honey
Instructions:
1. Bring the water to a boil in a small saucepan.
2. Add the ginger and honey and reduce the heat to low.
3. Simmer for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat and let steep for 10 minutes.
4. Strain the tea and enjoy!
You can also add other ingredients to your honey ginger tea, such as lemon, cinnamon, or cloves to change up the flavor.

2 cucumbers, thinly sliced
1/2 cup chopped mint
1/4 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon salt

Providing hope to those in need, last year nearly 37,000 nutritious lunches were delivered directly to the doors of 294 short- and long-term homebound and disabled neighbors by Meals on Wheels (MOW) Bluffton-Hilton Head. In 2023, this community-based, non-profit organization expects to provide 40,000 hot meals to local residents.
Every Monday through Friday throughout the year, volunteers meet in the morning to pack up these meals purchased through Senior Citizens, Inc. in Savannah – often with healthy snacks donated by The Deep Well Project – and then another group picks them up and heads out for delivery. While on their routes these volunteers also perform wellness checks to ensure isolated clients are healthy, safe and eating.
MOW is wholly dependent upon contributions from local charities, foundations and agencies, service organizations, corporate sponsors, churches and individuals. Each meal costs the organization $7.50 and, until recently, some clients were charged $3.50 a day to offset this cost.
The organization’s first Executive Director, Lili M. Coleman, recently announced the 1st Annual “Meals on Us” Restaurant Gift Card Raffle sponsored by Raymond James of Coastal States Wealth Management taking place over the summer.
Based on a successful program hosted by a Meals on Wheels chapter in New Jersey, raffle tickets are $20 each or five for $100 for the chance to win one of three packages totaling $2,000, $1,000 and $500 worth of local restaurant gift cards. The Meals on Us raffle drawing will take place around Labor Day and donated gift cards will be valid through April of 2024.
According to Coleman, proceeds from the fundraiser will allow MOW to subsidize meals at no cost to their clients, as well as underwrite other programs. Currently, 70% of the organization’s budget goes to meal costs.
In addition to expanding its reach into Jasper County, including Sun City, Meals on Wheels is looking to partner with area hospitals to provide nutritious meals to patients who might need help after hospitalization or medical procedures.
“We’re recognizing the needs of these clients,” notes Coleman. “One is making sure there is no malnutrition.”
“One out of two older adults are at risk of malnutrition,” she adds. “By providing them a nutritious meal, we could save $51 billion annually in disease associated with malnutrition. So, it’s
pretty critical that they get these meals.”
Meals on Wheels (MOW) BlufftonHilton Head is also planning to join the national PetSmart Charities initiative so homebound seniors will not feel compelled to forgo their food so their pets can eat.
“This effort is part of PetSmart Charities’ three-year, $3+ million commitment to Meals on Wheels America, which has helped enable nearly 17,000 older adults to keep and care for their loving companions,” according to a June 2021 Meals on Wheels America press release.
“One in four seniors lives alone and, for many of them, their pet is their closest companion and one of their only sources of consistent comfort. However, caring for a pet can often be a financial and physical challenge for older adults to manage on their own. With the generous support of PetSmart Charities, Meals on Wheels America supports local programs that help feed, groom and even provide preventive veterinary care to the pets of seniors in need.”
Appointed the interim part-time executive director of the local MOW chapter in April of 2022 and accepting a full-time position last November, Coleman brings a wealth of non-profit community service experience to her current position.
One of only four paid employees at the organization, the former Executive Director of both Bluffton Self Help and Second Helpings had planned to retire before accepting the newly created position.
“I just keep on going,” laughs Coleman. “My mom was 96 and she recently passed away last October. This was so near and dear to my heart that I really want to get involved.”
Over 220 volunteers – many who have worked with MOW for years and who use their own cars and pay for their own gas to pack up and/or deliver meals to their neighbors, assist with fundraising, marketing, administrative duties and community outreach – as well as an all-volunteer 10-member board, are dedicated to the Meals on Wheels cause.
“These volunteers are so connected with their clients and know them really well,” Coleman says. “They really love it.”
Every $7.50 donated to Meals on Wheels provides a hot meal for a neighbor in need. The highlight of HarbourFest is the Tuesday night fireworks shows which light up the night sky beginning June 6. 1 teaspoon Fennel seeds
¼ teaspoon Crushed red pepper flakes
½ teaspoon Salt

Salsa:
¼ cup Kalamata olives, pitted, quartered
1 cup Tomatoes, diced
¼ cup Basil, chopped
3 each Garlic cloves, minced
¼ teaspoon Crushed red pepper flakes
2 tablespoons Olive oil, divided
1 each Lemon, juiced
• Preheat the oven to 400° F.
• To make the spice rub combine, garlic powder, basil, fennel, red pepper flakes, salt, and lemon pepper.
• Generously sprinkle both sides of each filet with the spice rub.
• To prepare the salsa, combine olives, tomatoes, basil, garlic, red pepper flakes, 1 tablespoon of oil, and lemon juice.
• Preheat a large sauté pan to medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of oil. Place fish filets into the warmed sauté pan and sear the filets until caramelized and firm to touch, about 3-4 minutes per side, flip and repeat.
• For thicker pieces of fish, finish cooking the fish in the oven at 400° F. for 6-8 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 140° F.
• Serve about ¼ cup of Sicilian-style salsa over each fish filet.
