ANNUAL REPORT 2009—2010
FOREWORD I am delighted as the chair of the Appropriate Adults Tayside Steering Group to present the Annual Report 2009-2010. Appropriate Adults Tayside is an excellent example of partnership working in Tayside that has resulted in a service that meets, and in some instances exceeds, the recently introduced National Standards. Through the partnership and commitment of all partner agencies we are able to provide a service that operates 365 days a year, 24 hours a day on what is a
comparatively small budget. The year ahead will be a challenge for the service as demand continues to increase at a time when budgets must, at the least, stay the same. However I remain confident that given the flexibility of the service and the dedication of those involved, Appropriate Adults Tayside will continue to meet demand whilst maintaining its high standards of service delivery.
Tayside a leading service in Scotland and look forward to working with the Steering Group in the year ahead
On behalf of the Steering Group I would like to give recognition and thanks to the work that goes into making Appropriate Adults
Angela Wilson T/Assistant Chief Constable
MANAGER’S REPORT Fairness of interview for mentally disordered people has never been more topical than at present. The introduction of the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 has focused more attention on members of the public who are at risk. Whilst this will not always include people who have a mental disorder it has raised awareness of best practice when engaging with members of the public who do.
As with all years since 2004 the number of requests for the services of an appropriate adult has continued to increase. This applies to requests to attend police procedures as well as the Courts. Appropriate Adults Tayside has continued to meet this increased demand, even when the service has
experienced high volume requests that have seen up to three appropriate adults operating simultaneously across Tayside in different cases.
Nationally, standards that are aimed at encouraging best practice amongst appropriate adult services and providing a measure for service delivery, have been introduced and I’m proud to say that Appropriate Adults Tayside is confidently attaining each of these standards making it a leading service in Scotland.
“I’m proud to say that Appropriate Adults Tayside is confidently attaining each of these standards making it a leading service in Scotland”
The appropriate adults that are contracted to the service continue to provide a much needed and valued service, sometimes in difficult situations. The work of the Appropriate Adults Tayside Co-ordinator and the appropriate adults themselves cannot go without recognition or thanks, without them the service wouldn’t operate as successfully as it currently does.

Some Words of Appreciation from Tayside Police Officers: ♦ “The Appropriate Adult helped to calm the suspect as he became frustrated when he couldn’t understand questions put to him at the Charge Bar” ♦ “The Appropriate Adult was helpful as it took approximately 20 minutes to explain the caution to the suspect before even attempting to explain the term Lewd & Libidinous. The AA was able to provide a different way of explaining although suspect still had some difficulty” ♦ “The Appropriate Adult was excellent and seemed to understand the limit of his role completely, in no way hindering the interview process” ♦ “The Appropriate Adult should be commended for their ability”
