OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU Tayside Police is committed to reducing crime and disorder and making your neighbourhood a safe place to live, work and visit. We have a genuine and focussed commitment to continue to provide the professional service our communities have grown to expect. In this era of austerity we will use modern and efficient methods of service delivery. Fundamental to our approach is that local policing will be responsive to your needs. If you need a police officer, one will be there to help you. What matters to you is important to us. When you need us – we will help you. Justine Curran, Chief Constable Welcome to the policing plan for Tayside. Tayside Police plans on a three year cycle with regular reviews to ensure that our priorities reflect current local and national concerns. 2011 represents the beginning of year one of that cycle. This plan focuses on two community priorities –
PUBLIC SAFETY AND PUBLIC REASSURANCE Our Vision and Values Tayside Police makes a difference by: • Putting communities at the heart of everything we do • Fighting crime, bringing criminals to justice and protecting the vulnerable • Showing that we care and delivering a good quality of service • Working together, respecting each other and doing our best Our Standards of Service We aim to exceed public expectation with the standard of service we deliver. • We will be active, visible and approachable in our communities • We will present a smart and professional image • We will share information appropriately with other agencies to improve safety and minimise risk • We will treat everyone according to their needs, maintaining confidentiality where appropriate
www.tayside.police.uk
• We will keep the public informed about the progress of their enquiry
THE SERVICE WE WILL DELIVER First Contact Tayside Police operates a first rate communications centre. Over 90% of all emergency phone calls are answered within 10 seconds. Our nonemergency number handles in excess of 260,000 calls in a year. To supplement this during 2011 a new Public Assistance Desk (PAD) will be introduced to provide the public with general advice and information at first point of contact. Community Policing We have recently improved the way we police local neighbourhoods by ensuring that dedicated community officers and teams are based in the heart of communities and are focussed on addressing local issues and concerns. An important part of helping you feel safe is ensuring that you have the confidence in your local police officers and that you know who they are and where to go should you need to contact them. They work across Tayside. Our web-site provides more details under the ‘Your Community’ page. There are details of how to contact your local community officers, see who’s responsible for policing your area, and learn about police initiatives in your area.
THE SERVICE WE WILL DELIVER These officers now spend more time on patrol taking the time to speak to residents and visitors, understand concerns and provide reassurance that their problems are being addressed. Community Information The police rely on the public to provide them with information about what’s going on in their communities. Many crimes are solved as a direct result of public information. If necessary, information can be provided anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers, but whichever means of communication is used, the important role the public play in this respect cannot be emphasised enough. Community Resolutions You Say – We Listen – We work Together You tell us what is important to you through the regular community meetings and road shows attended by officers. In addition, we undertake surveys every year asking about crime and antisocial behaviour in your area, and about the service you have experienced from the police as a result of contacting us. Your responses directly influence policing priorities in your neighbourhood and help us improve the services we provide. Working in close collaboration with our partner organisations we can address local community problems and challenges together through our community planning processes. Tayside Police wants to provide you with a local police service that meets your needs and deals with the issues important to you. Using Technology We are moving with the times by using popular social media applications to reach a wider crosssection of the community, many of whom prefer to communicate this way. Our Resources Tayside Police is one of many public sector organisations throughout Scotland facing significant budget constraints over the next few years. The force needs to balance financial

demands with the needs of communities and deliver value for money. We will work hard to ensure that front-line policing is maintained and we will continue to work closely with partner agencies and other forces to maximise our combined resources. A great deal of significant work is carried out by the police service that is not obvious to the public, such as activity relating to serious and organised crime and counter-terrorism. This is critical in supporting safer communities throughout Tayside. In 2010 Tayside Police began to prepare for budget cuts with early indications suggesting that significant savings in excess of £18 million were to be found. In an organisation with a total budget of just under £80 million per year streamlining structures and processes will be required. During 2011 we will see the first stage of implementation of this transformation. This will be based on the principles and values of the force and its communities to ensure that Tayside Police continues to focus on community priorities. Our Corporate Social Responsibility As a police service we also have a duty to ensure that we do not harm the environment or waste valuable energy resources. We will take care to monitor consumption in order to reduce our carbon footprint in line with government targets. Our Results Our results speak for themselves. We’re already extremely successful in reducing crime and currently crime in Tayside is at an all-time low for the last ten years. Housebreaking and vehicle crime have fallen by over 60%; vandalism by over 20%, and we are well ahead of the Scottish average. Crime prevention will continue as a focus for activity for the force over the coming year; in challenging times we will continue to deliver a high quality service and tackle the issues you tell us are most important to you.
