We landed an interview with golf champion Greg Norman who considers Los Cabos one of the best places to live, that's why he has chosen it for his new golf and residences project. Parece que fue hace poco, sin embargo, han pasado 26 años desde que Cabo Real inauguró el campo de golf, y menciono este en particular en Los Cabos, porque en ese entonces la vida social del destino era relativamente tranquila, giraba alrededor de cualquier evento que llamara la atención.

n aquellos días, uno de los eventos sociales y deportivos más importantes realizado fue Senior PGA Grand Slam. Casualmente, se jugó por primera vez en Cabo Real. Obviamente, todos queríamos un gafete de acceso que nos permitiera estar cerca de la acción y ver a Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf, Sam Snead y, por supuesto, al ganador, Ray Floyd. Un gran evento que duró dos días y atrajo el interés de los golfistas, situó a Los Cabos en los ojos del mundo del golf. La razón principal giró en torno a la cobertura dada al torneo por las cadenas de televisión estadounidenses. El Senior PGA Grand Slam fue quizás uno de los indicadores más relevantes en la vida del deporte aquí en Baja California Sur.

n those days, one of the most important social and sporting events was the Senior PGA Grand Slam. Coincidentally, it was played for the first time in Cabo Real. Obviously, we all wanted an attendee badge that allowed us to be close to the action and watch Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf, Sam Snead and, of course, the winner, Ray Floyd. It was a great two-day event that attracted the attention of golfers and elevated Los Cabos in the eyes of the golfing world. The main reason was the coverage given to the tournament on US television networks. The Senior PGA Grand Slam was perhaps one of the most important milestones in the life of the sport here in Baja California Sur.
Diamante Dunes Course
El campo de golf que diseñó Fonatur fue el primero en Los Cabos. Originalmente planeado para tener 18 hoyos, se quedó solo con los 9 hoyos originales. Poco tiempo después vinieron el Campo de Carlos (hoy Country Club San Lucas), Cabo Real y Palmilla (sus primeros 18 hoyos), los cuales tuvieron que satisfacer la demanda de juego de los años 90. Muy rápido fueron insuficientes, la demanda por más campos de golf se hizo evidente. Pronto, no era suficiente construir un campo de golf, además, tenía que ser espectacular y con una arquitectura impresionante de diseñadores renombrados como Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Robert Trent Jones, Greg Norman, Gary Player y Tiger Woods, solo por mencionar algunos. Como resultado, las comunidades residenciales y comerciales alrededor de los campos de golf se han desarrollado con gran éxito.
La verdad es que el golf despierta pasiones; es una razón para planificar un viaje, asistir a un torneo, y, por qué no, el pretexto ideal para adquirir una propiedad como segundo hogar o de retiro. Country Club Es importante señalar que uno de los factores diferenciales de Los Cabos con otros destinos de golf en el mundo, es la cantidad de días de sol anuales que ronda por los 350, con una temperatura promedio aproximada a los 25 grados centígrados, precipitación pluvial escasa, con excepción del mes de septiembre.

The Fonatur course was the first and originally planned for 18 holes. However, it stayed with the original nine-hole design. Shortly after came El Campo de Carlos (now Country Club San Lucas), Cabo Real and Palmilla (the resort’s first 18 holes). The courses were constructed to satisfy the demand of gamblers in the 1990s. It wasn’t long before the number of courses was insufficient to meet the demand. Soon, it wasn’t enough to just build a course, it had to be spectacular and with impressive architecture by renowned designers such as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Robert Trent Jones, Greg Norman, Gary Player and Tiger Woods, just to mention a few. As a result, residential and commercial communities around the courses have been developed with great success.
Truth is, golf arouses passions. Golf alone is a reason to plan a trip, attend a tournament, purchase a vacation home and, why not, settle into a place of permanent residence or retirement. It is important to point out one difference with other golf destinations around the world. The number of days of annual sunshine here is around the 350, with an average temperature of about 77 degrees Fahrenheit. There is very little rainfall, except for September. If that were not enough, the ideal complement to golf is the actual destination. Here you can enjoy deep sea fishing, world-class dining and, of course, spas that are true works of art. It is not surprising to see a very large number of private planes at the Los Cabos airport all year round. (Los Cabos serves the second highest number of private jets in the nation.) Tourists flock here precisely to relax and enjoy all the activities.
Unlike in 1990s when social life revolved around events such as the Senior PGA Grand Slam, social life today has a very intense rhythm whether golf is included or not. One way or another, people enjoy vacationing in Los Cabos. More than 17 golf developments are distributed along San Jose del Cabo, Tourist Corridor and Cabo San Lucas making it the number one golf destination per capita in the country and one of the 15 best in the world.
But don’t take our word for it. Come and play golf. Fall in love with your favorite course and at the end of your game relax, pamper yourself, and take the rest of the afternoon to prepare for the next day.

During the interview with the couple, we observed the relationship they have with each other. It comes through in the spacious and comfortable residences. After traveling the world and learning about different cultures, Greg Norman realized that Los Cabos is an exceptional place that combines unique environments such as the desert, dunes and the sea. He and Kirsten hope to return whenever possible.

What made Greg Norman Real Estate want to partner with Rancho San Lucas in Los Cabos?
Ese vínculo inició primero solo proyectando el campo de golf. Conozco a Paco desde hace 18 años y siempre habíamos querido trabajar juntos; cuando decidió crear Rancho San Lucas, obviamente quería tener un espacio para golf. Durante ese proceso, me enamoré del terreno, de la riqueza del Océano Pacífico, de la playa y sabía que diseñar un campo de golf en este lugar iba ser algo sorprendente.
That link began just by imagining the golf course. I've known Paco for 18 years and we've always wanted to work together. When he decided to create Rancho San Lucas, he obviously wanted to have a space for golf. During that process, I fell in love with the land, the richness of the Pacific Ocean, and the beach. I knew that designing a golf course in this place was going to be something amazing.
Durante las gestiones del campo de golf, hablé con Paco y le dije: “me encantaría hacer un Norman Estates aquí”. Empezamos a hablar y la combinación entre las dos marcas, Solmar Hotels & Resorts y la mía, se fusionó y aquí estamos, en Norman Estates at Rancho San Lucas.
¿Qué hace de Los Cabos un lugar exclusivo para invertir en bienes raíces? Analicé lo que ha ocurrido en Los Cabos desde hace 20 años, creció de 6 vuelos a la semana a 65 al día. Es un destino turístico atractivo por muchas razones: clima, personas, cultura, comida, arquitectura, pesca, buceo, surf o si se prefiere solamente acostarte un momento en la playa. No hay muchos lugares en el mundo que capturen todo esto en un solo sitio y, aparte, que tengan increíbles campos de golf y hotelería de lujo. Los Cabos está en un lugar mágico que crece y evoluciona.
Over the course of designing the golf course, I spoke with Paco and said, “I would love to do a Norman Estates here.” We started talking and the combination of the two brands, Solmar Hotels & Resorts and mine, merged and here we are in Norman Estates at Rancho San Lucas.
Talk about “exclusive living environments,” what makes Los Cabos an exclusive place to invest in real estate? I analyzed what has happened in Los Cabos for 20 years. Air travel has grown from six flights a week to 65 a day. It is an attractive tourist destination for many reasons: weather, people, culture, food, architecture, fishing, diving, surfing or if you just want to lie down on the beach for a moment. There are not many places in the world that capture all this in one place. Apart from that, there are incredible golf courses and luxury hotels. Los Cabos is in a magical place that continues to grow and evolve.

Working with a team where each member has a point of view and has a specific role, how does Greg Norman communicate his own vision in order to achieve interior and architectural designs that express his identity?
Kirsten, ¿Cómo Greg Norman transmite su visión para lograr diseños de interiores y arquitectónicos que expresen la identidad de Norman Estates? ¿Sabes algo? Lo increíble es que compartimos el mismo gusto. Él tiene un gusto muy fuerte, masculino y yo entiendo eso. En este proyecto en particular, creamos juntos un concepto muy preciso y lo compartimos con el equipo. Trabajé con diseñadores locales y me ayudaron a interpretar lo que buscábamos con material regional; fuimos estrictos y exactos sobre lo que queríamos ver. Creo que también fuimos cuidadosos en controlar todo y que la visión que tenemos concordara con lo que se estaba haciendo. Es muy importante para nosotros entregar un producto auténtico Norman Estates y esto es, de verdad, totalmente el estilo de Greg. Así que el producto final es de mucha interacción, de juntas entre diseñadores y un equipo que realmente comprendió el proyecto.

¿Cómo definen lujo de alto nivel? Tal vez porque yo soy “high-end luxury” (risas). Aprecio la calidad en la vida, pero lo material son cosas que realmente no me impresionan, aunque lo material es algo que es necesario tener en tu día cotidiano. Viajo bastante y he visto muchas culturas, capturo de inmediato lo que me gusta de cada lugar. Si voy al Medio Oriente o Australia, o si estoy en Viena, Centroamérica o en Los Cabos, quiero capturar la esencia del lugar en el que estoy y verdaderamente respeto el lujo porque hay un cierto misterio en él. Las personas se quedan impactadas cuando entran a Norman Estates. Cuando logramos ese impacto, cumplimos con lo que significa lujo. Tampoco se trata de que sea muy costoso, sino complementar el lugar, y nuestro mantra es, en realidad, elegancia sutil o elegancia con pies descalzos. Puedes estar en un barco o en un rancho, o en una residencia aquí en Los Cabos y tener elegancia. Kirsten: Creo que nosotros interpretamos lujo como elegancia con comodidad, queremos que nuestros invitados se sientan cómodos y que puedan poner sus pies arriba de la mesa. Kristen: Want to know something? The amazing thing about Greg and me is that we share the same tastes. He has a very strong masculine taste and I understand that. In this particular project, we created a very precise concept together and shared it with the team. I worked with local designers and they helped me interpret what we were looking for with local materials. We were strict and exact about what we wanted to see. I think we were also very careful to control everything and that the vision we have agreed with what was being done. It is very important for us to deliver an authentic Norman Estates product and this is, really, totally Greg's style. So the final product is from a lot of interaction, of meetings between designers, and a team that really understood the project.
How do you define high-end luxury? Maybe because I'm "high-end luxury" (laughs). I appreciate quality in life, but the material things are things that really do not impress me, although the material is something that is necessary to have in your daily life. As I travel a lot and have seen many cultures, I immediately capture what I like about each place. If I go to the Middle East or Australia, or if I am in Vienna, Central America or Los Cabos, I want to capture the essence of the place where I am. I truly respect the luxury because there is a certain mystery to it. People are shocked when they enter Norman Estates. When we achieve that impact, we comply with what luxury means. It is not that it is very expensive, but to complement the place, and our mantra is, in reality, subtle elegance or bare feet elegance. You can be on a boat, a ranch, or in a residence here in Los Cabos and have elegance. Kirsten: I think we interpret luxury as elegance with comfort. We want our guests to feel comfortable and to be able to put their feet on the table. Luxury does not represent certain brands or expensive materials; it is understated elegance.
We know you are a fan of the outdoors. How has this inspired you when building a new development?
Sabemos que son fanáticos de los espacios al aire libre, ¿cómo esta preferencia les inspira a la hora de construir un nuevo desarrollo?
Kirsten: In fact, this project was very easy because you turn around and you realize how beautiful this place is. When I saw the flora, as well as the natural materials that exist in Mexico, it was easy for me to put it all together because there are many products that you can use here. Even the furniture made in the country is so beautiful because it was inspired by nature. That's where we started. In turn, the history of this piece of land that is Rancho San Lucas was also an important part of the process because we really wanted to capture that cowboy essence, of life on the ranch. In the end, everything was perfectly reconciled.
Kirsten: De hecho, este proyecto fue muy fácil porque observas a tu alrededor y te das cuenta de lo bonito que es este lugar. Vi la flora, los materiales que hay en México y fue fácil inspirarme, utilicé todo lo disponible porque hay muchos productos que puedes encontrar aquí. Greg: One of the situations that inspired me the most was the quality of the artisans in Mexico. The way in which they can create a piece of furniture and the skill with which they work is magical. But the important thing is the value they give to what they create and that is something that personally catches my attention. When I see what the artisan shows and then delivers, that moment is what impresses me more than anything else. I am impressed with Mexican artisans.

Nicklaus, to his credit, built kicker slopes and containment mounds at Quivira that tend to gather the ball to safety. Because of the vertiginous setting, each risk-reward scenario must be weighed very carefully on this one-ofa-kind design. When in doubt, take the conservative route. The opposite is Palmilla Golf Club. The first Jack Nicklaus Signature course in Latin America, Palmilla presents a fair, straightforward test with all targets and hazards in plain view. What you see is what you get. Carved into a box-shaped canyon, the layout weaves around cactus-covered hills, boulder-strewn arroyos and vast waste bunkers. For experts, heroic forced carries over ‘no man’s land’ are required from the back tees, but broad terraced fairways and open-entry greens accommodate players of lesser attainment from the forward markers. Cabo del Sol, a sterling 36-hole complex, offers a Jekyll-and-Hyde pair of layouts. The Ocean Course, a Nicklaus-designed masterpiece, is often described as the Pebble Beach of the Baja. The ebb-and-flow routing carries players from the high desert to the rocky shore of the sea on both nines. You need a full repertoire of shots to score on this world-class layout. The onshore breeze adds piquancy to the strokes, especially at the exposed seaside holes. Currently under reconstruction, the Ocean Course offers the most balanced test of golf in Los Cabos. Bring your ‘A’ game.

Puerto Los Cabos Each hole on the Desert Course at Cabo del Sol, designed by Tom Weiskopf, offers a panoramic view of the sparkling sea. This user-friendly design has wide landing areas and few forced carries. However, it does have a few blind shots. Faith and trust are required. The highlight of this strategic design are the greens that feature long slopes, subtle rolls and distinctive tiers. To defend them, Weiskopf built largescale bunkers with dramatic capes and bays. Good putters do well at the Desert Course. Bring a trusty sand wedge. Cabo Real, a Robert Trent Jones II design that opened 25 years ago, flies under the radar. The front nine plays to the brink of the sea and presents a scenic, sporty test. The incoming nine, arguably the toughest back nine in Los Cabos, is another story. Marked by steeply pitched holes chiseled into rugged mountain foothills, this stretch of holes presents a very sturdy test for aces and duffers alike. Elevated greens and ridgetop fairways create a top-of-the-world feel. The uphill 14th hole, stretching to 454 yards, tiptoes along the edge of a canyon to a green located beside a precipice at nearly 500 feet above the sea. Bogey is a good score here.
Tucked into the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, five minutes from San Jose del Cabo, the Nicklaus Design course at Club Campestre features an abundance of sand as well as sinuous arroyos that snake across the fairways. Sound tactics and course management are required to score. Campestre greens, among the most liberally contoured putting surfaces in Los Cabos, can be very challenging depending on pin placement. Puerto Los Cabos is situated on the outskirts of San Jose del Cabo. The club’s 27 holes (18 by Jack Nicklaus and nine by Greg Norman) are etched into rolling desert foothills. These rank among the steepest golf holes in Los Cabos. Holes on all three nines run sharply uphill and downhill. Players must steady themselves on the uneven terrain in order to make solid contact. A good tip is to set your shoulders level with the tilt of the land.

Guests of Chileno Bay Resort can play the perfectly manicured Tom Fazio-designed course at Chileno Bay Golf & Beach Club, which offers deluxe comfort stations on both nines. Expect Kobe beef sliders, beer on tap and an astounding array of sweets. The key, if you’re keeping score, is to imbibe in moderation. Similarly, guests at Montage Los Cabos can play the otherwise private Twin Dolphin Golf Club, a beautiful Fred Couples-designed course opened in 2018. The club’s two on-course “Red Door” comfort stations are state-of-the-art refreshment stands with the definitive selection of drinks and light bites. As mentioned, for those keeping score, less is more. Twin Dolphin also offers the finest and most sophisticated practice facility in Los Cabos. Looking ahead, Los Cabos will welcome two newcomers this year. The Greg Norman-designed course at Rancho San Lucas, fronting the Pacific Ocean, will be a beguiling, ‘least-disturbance’ layout with several holes carved through massive dunes along the beach. Players will need to be able to hit low-trajectory ‘knock-down’ shots to control the ball in the wind.
Costa Palmas is a new resort and residential development taking shape on the East Cape. The Robert Trent Jones II course under construction is on a sandy site along the Sea of Cortez that will also require players to shape shots in the wind. In addition, there’s an estuary that guards several holes—golfers must avoid this watery grave at all costs!

Originally from Italy and ten years after arriving in Los Cabos, Chef Matias Forte and Christian Ricci fondly remember the pleasures of home-style cooking. “In a conversation long ago, we shared the feeling that the kitchen has lost a little spirit and a bit of tradition. The soul of the kitchen was the respect for the raw materials. They are available during specific seasons for a reason. Nature works in a wonderful way.” Matias The concept of Picaro is comfort food, cooked with a love for the product and for the diner. It is a bit of a gastronomic revolution within the Solmar group and the Rancho San Lucas development. Freshness is paramount. Whether vegetables, seafood or cuts of meat, the quality of the ingredients is critical. The creativity of the chef highlights the dishes with aromatic herbs, marinades and citrus zests. The Picaro menu will evolve with the seasons and dishes will be respectfully prepared as they were in the past. The cooking area includes a wood burning oven, charcoal grill and a kitchen bar. Although the dishes are inspired by the chef, the goal is to prepare the food the way our grandmothers did.

The name was the inspiration for the innovative and surprising concept. Picaro was a character with a healthy appetite for mischief. He lived by his wits and went through life expecting to prosper. He never stayed in one place or let himself be overwhelmed by day to day circumstances. He always had many ideas and a cunning mind that got him out of difficult situations.

The sense of smell perceives the unpleasant odors that, as a society, we have originated. These smells have replaced those that a mountain path offers, where smells nature can still be enjoyed.

El silencio y el canto de los pájaros por la mañana ya no se aprecia. El sentido del tacto, tan necesario cuando éramos bebés, ahora se ve disminuido por tener las manos ocupadas con aparatos electrónicos. Cada vez las caricias y los abrazos son menos, por estar cada uno inmerso en su mundo.

os Cabos, el destino turístico premium de México, ha logrado consolidar una exclusiva oferta de alojamiento y actividades que cautivan a las audiencias más exigentes, rodeados de escenarios naturales que brindan una espectacular mezcla entre mar y desierto. La ‘Experiencia de Los Cabos’ se complementa con una gastronomía a la altura de cualquier otro destino de la escena mundial. La historia culinaria de Los Cabos se ha escrito por varios años, gracias a restaurantes como Nick-San, Sunset Monalisa y Don Sánchez, por mencionar algunos. Esta historia se ha reforzado con la llegada de las cocinas de chefs mundialmente reconocidos como Jean George Vongerichten, Sidney Schutte y Martin Berasategui, así como de otros talentosos chefs que brillan en escenarios nacionales e internacionales como Enrique Olvera, Benito Molina, Poncho Cadena, Thierry Blouet y Javier Plascencia. Culinary Awards es un proyecto que enaltece la gastronomía. Nuestra propuesta culinaria no solo alberga alta cocina, sino que también rinde homenaje a los sabores más tradicionales de la región. Como cualquier otro certamen, Culinary
Awards se rige a través de estatutos que dictan criterios de participación y establecen una forma de evaluación justa y transparente para todos los restaurantes inscritos, con el objetivo de reconocer a aquellos que sobresalieron durante el año previo. En esta segunda edición, participaron 121 restaurantes. Un jurado compuesto por 70 expertos locales, a manera de Mystery Shoppers, visitaron y evaluaron cada restaurante. Más de 10 mil personas de la comunidad local participaron a través de una votación en línea. Más de 15 empresas hicieron posible Culinary Awards a través de sus patrocinios y apoyos. Esto es solo un pequeño resumen de todo el esfuerzo de hay detrás de este gran proyecto. La gala de premiación de Culinary Awards se ha convertido en la noche más importante de la gastronomía de Los Cabos. Este pasado 25 de abril, se dieron a conocer a los ganadores de las 13 categorías del jurado, las 10 elegidas por el público, y el galardón especial a la trayectoria culinaria. Una velada en la que, por segundo año consecutivo, se dio testimonio de que Los Cabos se ha convertido en un paraíso gastronómico.

The culinary history of Los Cabos has been several years in the writing thanks to restaurants such as Nick-San, Sunset Monalisa and Don Sanchez. This story has been reinforced with the arrival of the kitchens of world-renowned chefs such as Jean George Vongerichten, Sidney Schutte and Martin Berasategui, as well as other talented chefs who shine on national and international stages such as Enrique Olvera, Benito Molina, Poncho Cadena, Thierry Blouet and Javier Plascencia.
Culinary Awards is a project that enhances our gastronomy. Our culinary offerings not only house haute cuisine, they also pay homage to the most traditional flavors of the region. Like any other contest, Culinary Awards are governed by regulations that dictate participation criteria and establish a fair and transparent evaluation for all registered restaurants. The aim is to recognize those who excelled during the previous year. In this second edition, 121 restaurants participated. A jury of 70 local experts working as Mystery Shoppers visited and evaluated each restaurant. More than 10 thousand people from the local community participated through an online vote. In addition, more than 15 companies made Culinary Awards possible through their sponsorships and support. This is just a small summary of all the effort behind this great project. The Culinary Awards award gala has become the most important night of gastronomy in Los Cabos. This past April 25, the winners of the 13 categories awarded by the jury, the 10 chosen by the public, and the special award for culinary trajectory were announced. It was an evening in which, for the second year in a row, there was plenty of testimony that Los Cabos has become a gastronomic paradise.

Pëßçå dë Përlåß ëñ Pearl Fishing in Lå Påz
n mal día de pesca es mejor que un buen día de trabajo… para quien disfruta de levantarse temprano, contemplar elevarse el sol en el horizonte y sentir la brisa marina, un día de pesca puede volverse más que un trabajo, un deleite y un placer. En los municipios de Baja California Sur, existen diversos puntos históricamente relevantes para practicar la pesca, sea por deporte, recreación o consumo personal. “Desde principios de 1900 hay anécdotas sobre la pesca comercial en Espíritu Santo. Los pescadores del Esterito siguen trabajando en la isla, conocen la historia a través de sus padres, abuelos y bisabuelos. Más de cuatro generaciones de pescadores han trabajado y trabajan en el mar, y en la actualidad se pueden encontrar pescadores que lo hacen desde 1940, hasta jóvenes que empiezan a seguir a sus familiares en el trabajo del mar. Durante la primera mitad del siglo XX la pesca tenía como objetivos las perlas, el tiburón y peces de gran tamaño como la garropa.

Le dio por abrirlas y dice que tenía una perla gorda, y que le dice a su hermano: “¡Vámonos para La Paz” - “¿por qué?”- “¡Vámonos!” – “¿Qué problema hay?” “Aquí está el problema: ¡ya nos bendijo Dios, hay que regresar!” Y esa perla la vendieron bien vendida, y de ahí se acomodó mi tata que compró otra canoa, y se hicieron de buen equipo y buena casa con esa perla.” José Antonio Méndez Castro En cada punto del archipiélago pueden observarse las huellas que los pescadores han dejado. "Beginning in the early 1900's, there are stories about commercial fishing around Espiritu Santo. The fishermen of the Esterito continue working near the island. Nació en San Antonio, poblado histórico del Municipio de La Paz, en 1936. Comenzó a estudiar pintura y dibujo publicitario en los años 60’s en la Ciudad de México. A partir de 1980 empezó una serie de cursos sobre técnicas de producción artística y pedagogía. Armando Manríquez desempeñó el loable papel de maestro en la materia de vocación artística de varias generaciones, a la par de su trabajo como creador artístico.
BIOGRAPHY Armando Manriquez was born in San Antonio, a historic town in La Paz, in 1936. In the 1960s, he studied painting and illustrating for advertising in Mexico City. Starting in 1980, he began a series of courses on production techniques and teaching artistic concepts and theories. Along with his painting, Armando Manriquez played the important role of teacher for many generations.

CAMINO A LA MISIÓN DE SAN BORJA ANTHONY QUARTUCCIO
ESTA MISIÓN SE LOCALIZA A MÁS DE VEINTE MILLAS DE ROSARITO, UN PEQUEÑO POBLADO JUNTO A LA CARRETERA. A LOS LADOS DEL CAMINO A SAN BORJA, ENCONTRAMOS UNA DIVERSIDAD DE CACTUS CARDONES, YUCAS, PATAS DE ELEFANTE Y CIRIOS. El camino es una abrupta brecha angosta medio borrada por una capa de arena; hay tramos en que la ruta se profundiza por las rodadas y el centro es tan alto que el “camper” va golpeando contra las afiladas rocas de la senda. En algunos puntos, por lo angosto, solo puede pasar un carro a la vez y no hay espacio para hacerse a un lado en caso de que viniera otro vehículo en dirección opuesta. En ocasiones nos tomó horas avanzar unas cuantas millas. Después de cruzar lo que fuera un arroyo, ahora seco, continuamos cuesta arriba por una ruta cubierta de piedras redondas difíciles de evitar. Como casi en todos los viejos caminos de la península no existen señalamientos que ofrezcan la dirección a seguir. Me mantuve en lo que parecía la ruta principal, pero no estaba seguro. Eventualmente, alcanzamos a ver un rancho donde paramos para preguntar por el camino correcto.
SAN BORJA MISSION IS LOCATED MORE THAN TWENTY MILES FROM ROSARITO, A SMALL STOPPING PLACE BESIDE THE HIGHWAY. THE SIDE ROAD WE TOOK TO SAN BORJA MEANDERS THROUGH A FOREST OF CARDON CACTUS, YUCCAS, ELEPHANT AND CIRIO TREES. The road was rough and narrow with sharp rocks protruding from its sandy bed. Some times the ruts are deep with the high center almost scraping the bottom of our camper. Often, there is barely room for one car with no place to pull over should another car come from the opposite direction. Sometimes it took us hours to go only a few miles.
After crossing dry creek beds and continuing over hilly land covered with boulders, the dirt road forked. As with most peninsular roads, there were no signs posted to give directions. I kept on what appeared to be the main road, but I wasn’t sure. Eventually, a rancho came into view and I stopped to ask for directions. The house was a dilapidated structure with drying red peppers hanging from its walls. It was flanked by a corral and a small cornfield. Barking dogs guarded the entrance to the house. Seconds later an elderly women emerged from the doorway to see what the commotion was about. She appeared dignified despite the signs of hardships etched on her weathered face. I waved to her and asked in my limited Spanish, “Which way to Mission San Borja?” Without speaking, she pointed her finger down the road. As I continued, the road ahead began to climb higher and higher. The increasing, rock formations were as startling as the forest of cardon cactus and cirio trees. This was accented by the drab grayish colored ground. Ocasionally, a pretty, reddish barrel catus brightened the somber landscape.

De las paredes de la casa casi en ruinas, colgaban las largas varas de chile rojo seco, a un costado de un corral y un pequeño maizal. Nos recibieron unos perros ladrando y minutos después una mujer de avanzada edad se asomó a la puerta para saber que ocurría. Ella se presentaba con gran dignidad no obstante sus privaciones y dificultades que reflejaba en su cara. Con un ademán la saludé y pregunté en mi limitado español: “¿Cuál es el camino a Misión San Borja?” Y sin hablar nos apuntó con el dedo el camino hacia abajo. Según avanzamos, la ruta comenzó a subir y subir cada vez más y a cambiar aquellas formaciones por un campo cubierto de cactus cardones y cirios que acentuaban el colorido gris parduzco de la tierra. Ocasionalmente, un cactus organillo rojizo alegraba el sombrío paisaje. Difícilmente vimos otro carro en el trayecto. El único vestigio de vida fue un poco de ganado que estaba a medio morir masticando con fuerza un erizado cactus lleno de espinas y unos zopilotes haciendo círculos buscando algo desde lo alto. Cuando alcanzamos la cima quise parar y hacer un dibujo de ese fantástico panorama de mesetas con rocas que parecieran quemadas bajo el candente sol como las de un escarpado volcán y como complemento, en la lejanía, unas lanudas nubes blancas suavemente dispuestas por encima. El cielo, las montañas y el desierto se fusionan en una armoniosa combinación de inolvidable belleza. El hombre parece perderse en estos campos salvajes. Este lugar siempre guardará recuerdos entrañables para mí. Me inspiró con su desolada quietud y panorama primitivo. Intentaré en mis pinturas reflejar mi respuesta emocional a esta tierra.
We hardly saw another car. The only signs of life were a few half-starved bony cattle munching on thorny cactus and buzzards tracing lazy circles high in the sky. When I reached the summit, I stopped to sketch the fantastic panorama of sun-baked table top mesas and rugged volcanic peaks. The scene was further accented by fleecy white clouds,
slowly drifting overhead. The sky, the mountains and the desert became a fusion, a blending of unforgettable beauty. This place will always hold cherished memories for me. It inspired me with its quiet desolation and primitive natural landscape. Man seems lost in this wild country. I attempted to reveal my emotional response to this land on canvas.

a comida típica durante el siglo XIX recibe dos influencias principales a través de la tradición misional y la que derivó de las primeras colonizaciones. Se distinguen dos formas de menú: 1) el que proviene de los pueblos de San José y San Miguel de Comondú, de La Purísima-San Isidro, de San Luis Gonzaga y otras huertas antiguas de la zona serrana, así como la originada en Loreto, primera capital de las Californias 2) el que proviene de los ranchos ganaderos y que carecieron de áreas de cultivo. El caso de las bebidas es ilustrativo de la importancia del agua en las comunidades fundadoras. Mientras en San Javier y San Miguel de Comondú se producían uvas para fabricar el vino misionero, en la zona serrana se produjo vino de naranja y de garbanzo. También, junto al café de grano, en tiempos de escasez se utilizaba la zaya y la jojoba como sustituto. Los tés más comunes eran los de damiana y de jojoba.

he origin of dishes typically prepared during the 19th century was influenced by missionaries and the first colonists. The cuisine came from two separate geographic sources. 1) The towns of San Jose and San Miguel de Comondu, La Purisima-San Isidro, San Luis Gonzaga and the old orchards of the mountain area, as well as Loreto, the first capital of the Californias 2) The cattle ranches that contained no cultivated areas. The different types of liquids consumed are illustrative of the importance of water in the founding communities. San Javier and San Miguel de Comondu produced grapes to make missionary wine. Orange and chickpea wines were also produced in the mountain area, along with coffee beans. In times of scarcity, zaya and jojoba nuts were used as coffee substitutes. Damiana and jojoba leaves were the most common teas.
Con las concesiones extranjeras en bahía Magdalena, se desarrolló desde fines del siglo XIX una comunidad de estadounidenses y ecuatorianos. Las compañías Flores & Hale y Cobos & Monroy explotaron la orchilla en grandes cantidades y realizaron intercambios con los rancheros vecinos. No se tienen noticias del tipo de comida utilizada en esta etapa, pero es posible que incorporaran el consumo de peces y moluscos, abundantes en la bahía como tiburón, marlín, atún, sardina, jaiba, cangrejo, abulón, caguama, callo de hacha, almeja catarina, pulpo, langosta y peces. La compañía estableció varios ranchos ganaderos para asegurar el alimento a los trabajadores y por el tipo de comunicación marítima con San Diego y San Francisco es posible que se abastecieran de los demás ingredientes culinarios.

The companies Flores & Hale and Cobos & Monroy manufactured orchilla dye in large quantities and traded freely with neighboring ranchers. There is no information about the type of food consumed during this time but it likely included seafood that was abundant in the bay such as shark, marlin, tuna, sardines, crab, abalone, loggerhead turtles, octopus, lobster, molluscs and a variety of other fish. The companies also established several cattle ranches to ensure food for the workers. Maritime communications with San Diego and San Francisco suggests the companies were supplied with additional culinary ingredients.
Al entrar el siglo XX la región de los llanos de Magdalena vive un proceso de cambio, primero con la cancelación de la base naval estadounidense, del retiro de la Flores & Hale y de la concesión pesquera japonesa a Kondo Masaharu. El gobierno mexicano en 1925 establece una base naval en Puerto Cortés y en 1933 se expropia la concesión al abogado Delbert H. Haff por 1 millón 247 mil hectáreas para fines de colonización. En las islas Margarita y Magdalena se formó una comunidad con nativos de los ranchos ganaderos ocupados en la Marina y en la pesca. De esta etapa surgieron los platillos de machaca de caguama, de manta y de tiburón; el suculento platillo de caguama, hoy prohibido; así como los ceviches, aguachiles y pescado relleno, entre otros. Al fundarse las primeras colonias en Santo Domingo se establecieron algunas familias de La Purísima, de puerto Cortés y de puerto Alcatraz, con lo que se enriqueció el menú de los colonizadores. En Santo Domingo viejo, hacia los 30´s del s. XX, se estableció una huerta en un predio de la familia Domínguez donde se cultivaron frutales y hortalizas. Santo Domingo conjugó la comida del mar, del oasis y del rancho ganadero como la almeja china con arroz, el frijol con garbanzo, la machaca de manta, tiburón, mero y caguama; el caldo de cabeza de mero, el caldo de hueso con zaya, el colache de pitahaya, las habas con ejote, el pan, el pinole y el puré de haba, el frijol yurimun y el caldo de gallina.
En 1942 arribó un grupo sinarquista a lo que sería la colonia María Auxiliadora, cercana a Santo Domingo. Campesinos de origen, ensayaron diversos cultivos que comerciaron en La Paz y en puerto Cortés, como la sandía, el frijol, la calabaza, el maíz y algunas verduras que vendían en isla Margarita y en La Paz. En 1949 arranca la colonización de 400 mil hectáreas del valle de Santo Domingo, al que arriban en promedio 73 colonias agrícolas procedentes de diversos estados del país, tras la promoción nacional que realizara el gobernador del territorio Agustin Olachea.
At the turn of the 20th century, the region that included the plains of Magdalena underwent substantial changes. It began with the closure of the US naval base, the departure of Flores & Hale and the fishing concession awarded to Kondo Masaharu of Japan. In 1925, the Mexican government established a naval base in Puerto Cortes and, in 1933, 1,247,000 hectares were taken from the lawyer Delbert H. Haff for the purpose of colonization.
In 1942, a synarchist group arrived at what would be the Maria Auxiliadora neighborhood, near Santo Domingo. Peasants by origin, the workers tried different crops that they traded in La Paz and Puerto Cortes and sold on Margarita Island and in La Paz. The crops included watermelon, beans, squash, corn and other vegetables. In 1949, the colonization began of 400,000 hectares in the valley of Santo Domingo. After a national promotion announced by the governor of the territory, Agustin Olachea, approximately seventy-three agricultural colonies arrived in the valley from different states of the country.
The community of natives on the cattle ranches of Margarita and Magda Islands were joined by the Navy and commercial fishing. From this era came the dishes of machaca de caguama, manta and shark; a now forbidden succulent loggerheard turtle dish; and, ceviches, aguachiles and stuffed fish, among others. With the expansion of colonization, the families of new settlements in Santo Domingo, La Purisima, Puerto Cortes and the port of Alcatraz greatly enriched the regional menus. Around the 1930s, in old Santo Domingo, a fruit orchard and a garden were established on some property owned by the Dominguez family. Santo Domingo combined the food of the orchard and garden with the sea, oases and the cattle ranches. For example, Chinese clams with rice, beans with chickpeas, manta ray machaca, shark, grouper and turtles, fish head soup, bone broth with zaya, chicken broth, a variety of beans, cactus fruit pastries, pinole and delicious breads. Los campos de golf & su diseño Los Cabos se ha convertido en uno de los destinos favoritos de Golf a nivel nacional e internacional. Tiene en su inventario 12 de los mejores 16 campos de nuestro país de acuerdo a la publicación Golf Digest de entre un total de 220 instalaciones repartidas en todo el territorio nacional en 2018.
Aún mejores noticias, Los Cabos tiene cuatro campos en la lista de los mejores 100 del mundo: Querencia en el número 97, Quivira en el 93, Cabo del Sol Ocean en el 70 y Diamante Dunes en el 47. Con una oferta tan atractiva, el turismo de Golf en el destino ha crecido significativamente en la última década. Ha incrementado el inventario turístico con el recién inaugurado Rancho San Lucas bajo el diseño de Greg Norman. Otra próxima apertura es en Costa Palmas que tendrá un campo diseñado por Robert Trent Jones II.
El crecimiento de los campos de Golf, particularmente en el caso de Los Cabos, se ha desarrollado bajo un modelo de negocio inmobiliario tipo residencial complementario a la actividad turística con la puntual ubicación de los más prestigiados resorts de lujo internacionales, ofertando no solamente el turismo de Golf sino la posibilidad de poseer un tiempo compartido, una propiedad fraccionada o una vivienda en modalidad horizontal o vertical. Golf courses & their design
Los Cabos has become a favorite national and international golf destination. According to Golf Digest, there were 220 golf facilities in Mexico in 2018 and 12 of the 16 finest courses were right here.
Even better, Los Cabos is home to four of the top 100 courses in the world. The Querencia course is number 97, Quivira 93, Cabo del Sol Ocean 70 and Diamante Dunes number 47. With such an attractive offer, it’s no wonder golf tourism has grown appreciably over the last decade in Los Cabos. The rate of growth shows no sign of slowing down with the recent opening of the Rancho San Lucas course designed by Greg Norman and the upcoming opening of the Costa Palmas course designed by Robert Trent Jones II.
In the case of Los Cabos, the development of golf courses has followed the residential real-estate business model. The most prestigious international luxury resorts strategically offer not only golf but timeshare ownership or fractional property or housing in a horizontal or vertical mode. Employing this model, large blocks are developed for residential and hotel use around the golf courses generally in radial compositions that give greater importance to the Club House. The design favors the creation of true communities not only of residents but also local golfers and international visitors.
Una de sus principales jugadoras en la historia fue María I Estuardo, quien contaba con un campo en la población de Saint Andrews en las proximidades del mar, a lo que hoy llamaríamos un campo lineal en duna diseñado en una topografía ondulada y distribuida en 11 hoyos, desde la sede del club hasta los límites de la propiedad, dando un total de 22 hoyos considerando la vuelta al punto de inicio. Más de 100 años después en el siglo XIX, un grupo de acérrimos jugadores sin estudios en arquitectura o ingeniera, pero con los conocimientos del deporte y con la intención de mejorar la experiencia en los campos, debutaron como diseñadores y formularon los conceptos que hoy rigen este deporte. Alister MacKenzie, cirujano de profesión, diseñó más de 50 campos de golf dentro de los que se ubican 3 de los 100 más importantes actualmente e impuso los 13 mandamientos del diseño de campos que aún son seguidos por los diseñadores actuales. Tom Morris introdujo las diferentes texturas en los pastos, obstáculos y los montículos de salida acompañados por las aportaciones de Harry Colt, Charles Hugh Alison y John Stanton Fleming Morrison, dentro de algunos otros.
This model of design and construction of golf courses has evolved over time and although it is still one of the most widely used, it had its origins in models that were more austere but no less “real.” From Roman times, we know of a sport consisting of hitting a ball of feathers with a curved stick. However, the origin of golf as we know it today began several hundred years later under the name of Kolt (stick) in the Netherlands, and even more formally, in Scotland in the 15th century. An early historical figure that played golf was Mary Stuart. She had a course in the town of Saint Andrews near the sea. It is what we would now call a linear dune course designed on an undulating topography that included 11 holes from the clubhouse to the property limits. In total there were 22 holes considering the return to the starting point. In 1764, the 11 holes were redistributed in a more consistent manner to each other and the first 9-hole design was created. With the return, there was a total of 18 holes. As a result, Saint Andrews became the golf capital of the time and many of the following courses were designed under the same standard. Even now, Saint Andrews is recognized as one of the best golf courses in the world. More than 100 years later, in the 19th century, a group of passionate players with no training in architecture or engineering but with a comprehensive knowledge of the sport and with the intention of improving the experience on the courses, debuted as designers and created the regulations that rule the sport today. Alister MacKenzie, a surgeon by profession, designed more than 50 golf courses, including three of the 100 most important golf courses that exist today. He also created and imposed the 13 commandments of golf course design that still apply to most courses in the world. Golf course design today includes the introduction and appreciation of endemic plant species, irrigation systems controlled by artificial intelligence to optimize resources, the reading of topography using threedimensional models that allows greater use of natural soil, and a more rational design that favors the environment before the whims of the designers.
