abo San Lucas, pequeñísima población que albergaba pescadores, constantemente rehacía y reparaba daños en las viviendas por los temporales que azotaban la zona. San José del Cabo, pueblo ganadero, agricultor y relacionado a cierta actividad minera, tenía influencia europea en los inmuebles. Eran sólidos, de doble altura y adecuados a las condiciones climáticas de la zona, con ventanas de madera reforzada, paredes gruesas de adobe y ladrillo para hacer frente a los fuertes vientos. Por supuesto, en el corredor que une estas dos poblaciones, no había construcción alguna. Ni imaginar lo que sucedería cien años después. El tiempo transcurrió con relativa tranquilidad. Los esfuerzos realizados por la familia Rodríguez por construir la primera etapa del Hotel Palmilla tuvieron una influencia importante en el estilo arquitectónico, éste provenía del sur de California, se extendió a otros hoteles de la época y casas aledañas.

Regresar a principio del siglo XX e imaginar las construcciones en lo que hoy es el Municipio de Los Cabos, es hacer todo un viaje por diversas etapas arquitectónicas, estilos, constructoras, desarrolladores y necesidades propias de la población. 10

Con la participación de Fonatur en 1976 se inició un proceso formal en el desarrollo de lo que se denominaría posteriormente Los Cabos. La construcción del Aeropuerto Internacional, la marina de Cabo San Lucas, el Hotel Presidente, las supermanzanas de la colonia magisterial, y la urbanización de ciertas calles detonaron un acelerado crecimiento, sin embargo, prevalece el estilo arquitectónico original.

Of course there was no construction in the corridor linking these two populations. No one could even imagine what would happen a hundred years later. Time passed with relative calm. Efforts by the Rodriguez family to build the first stage of the Hotel Palmilla were influenced by an architectural style that came from Southern California. The style eventually spread to other hotels and surrounding houses.

To look back to the early twentieth century and imagine the buildings in what is now the municipality of Los Cabos is to take a journey through various architectural stages, styles, builders, developers and the requirements of the population.

he tiny population of Cabo San Lucas harbored fishermen who constantly rebuilt structures and repaired damage from storms that frequently lashed the area. San Jose del Cabo was a cattle and farming village with some related mining activity. The construction had a European influence. It was stronger, taller and adapted to the weather conditions through reinforced wood windows, thick adobe, and brick walls that stood up to the strong winds.

The participation of Fonatur in 1976 began a formal process in the development of what later would be called Los Cabos. The construction of the International Airport, the Cabo San Lucas marina, the Hotel Presidente, extrememly large residential divisions, and the development of certain streets ignited rapid growth. However, the original architectural style prevailed.

En ese entonces se respetaron las aeropistas de los hoteles Palmilla y Cabo San Lucas, los diferentes ranchos y la topografía plana cercana a la playa. Era una obra necesaria justificada por los planes del propio Fonatur.

In 1974, the Diaz Rivera family arrived in Cabo San Lucas and acquired a strip of land from Don Luis Bulnes Molleda (RIP) located between the hills and the beautiful beach on the Pacific Ocean side. The land would become Pedregal, residential area in downtown with stunning views.

En 1974, llega a Cabo San Lucas la familia Díaz Rivera quien adquirió de manos de Don Luis Bulnes Molleda (QEPD) una extensión de tierra, ubicada entre cerros y una hermosa playa de lado del Océano Pacífico, que se convertiría en Pedregal, zona residencial céntrica con impresionantes vistas. Esta carretera también permitió desarrollar obras a lo largo del Corredor Turístico. Se inició la construcción de hoteles, fraccionamientos y residencias. La mirada de muchos desarrolladores se dirigió a la zona, así iniciaron los fraccionamientos como Cabo del Sol, Twin Dolphin, Chileno, Cabo Real, Cerro Colorado, Palmilla, Gringo Hill, Costa Azul y las supermanzanas de Fonatur.

The Transpeninsular Highway was built along the route of the well-known Camino Real. This was more due to cost than a vision of long-term planning. The route respected the landing strips of the Palmilla and Cabo San Lucas hotels as well as the different farms and the flat topography close to the beach. It was necessary work justified by Fonatur’s own plans.

The road also allowed development along the tourist corridor. Hotels, subdivisions and individual homes were built. The area became the focus of many developers. Houses sprang up in Cabo del Sol, Twin Dolphin, Chileno, Cabo Real, Cerro Colorado, Palmilla, Gringo Hill, Costa Azul and Fonatur’s subdivisions. Por supuesto la diversidad de estilos estuvo presente y con ello la expresión arquitectónica. A diferencia de otros destinos turísticos, no se restringió ni se condicionó más allá de lo que marcaban los lineamientos, aunque vale la pena decirlo, tampoco se permitieron grandes edificios. El auge del diseño de interiores y exteriores comenzó a raíz de inversiones importantes en prácticamente todo el municipio.

Of course, there was a diversity of styles and architectural expressions unlike other tourist destinations. In fact, there were no restrictions or conditions beyond the guidelines of each of the divisions. Although it is worth noting, no large buildings were allowed. Interior and exterior design arouse following major investments in virtually the entire municipality.

Hacia finales de la década pasada, la crisis hipotecaria de Estados Unidos afectó la industria de bienes raíces. Se observó en Los Cabos una desaceleración inmobiliaria que duró casi 7 años, y que paradójicamente terminó con el impacto del huracán Odile. Desde entonces y hasta ahora, el desarrollo inmobiliario está en apogeo. Grandes firmas, afamados arquitectos, importantes cadenas hoteleras y desarrolladores han encontrado un campo fértil para instalarse. Por muchos años, la pesca y el golf fueron los atractivos más importantes de la zona, a éstos se han agregado: gastronomía, deportes, actividades y bienes raíces. Towards the end of the last decade, the mortgage crisis in the US deeply affected the development of the area. For the first time in many years, there was a slowdown in the real estate market. It lasted nearly seven years and ironically ended when hurricane Odile impacted. From that point until now, real estate development has experienced an intensive period of growth. Large firms, famous architects, big developers and international hotel chains have found fertile ground in Los Cabos.

For many years, fishing and golf were the area’s most important attractions. Today, gastronomy, sports, adventure activities and architecture have been added to the list. The options to acquire a property as a second home have expanded with subdivisions built around golf courses, beach and mountains.

Fernando es originario de Ensenada, Baja California y vive en Los Cabos desde hace casi 10 años. Asume la presidencia de la Asociación de Promotores y Desarrolladores Turísticos Inmobiliarios de Los Cabos, A.C. en el 2014.

Fernando is from Ensenada, Baja California and has lived in Los Cabos for almost 10 years. In 2014, he became the President of the Association of Tourism and Real Estate Developers of Los Cabos, A.C.

Se ha tomado mayor conciencia respecto al tema inmobiliario. Aún queda mucho por hacer, sin embargo, en esta administración se han abierto las puertas y la transparencia para mejorar. La Asociación de Desarrolladores busca establecer y mantener un clima de confianza en las inversiones al proteger los derechos de los desarrolladores. Desde su fundación en 1993 los miembros han contribuido a un crecimiento ordenado, en beneficio general de la comunidad. Actualmente el comportamiento del área inmobiliaria de Los Cabos está en crecimiento. Inclusive la industria hotelera ha comenzado a incursionar ofreciendo este producto. Las residencias abarcan alrededor de 40% del mercado actual, la oferta de villas, lotes residenciales y condominios han aumentado en el último par de años.

There is a greater consciousness about the subject of real estate. Much remains to be done. However, this administration has opened many doors and transparency will lead to even more improvements. The Developers Association aims to establish and maintain a climate of confidence in investments by protecting the rights of the developers. Since the Association was founded in 1993, members have been eagerly contribuited to orderly growth, in benefit of the community in general. Los Cabos is booming in terms of real estate. The hotel industry has even begun to offer real estate products. Single family dwellings make up about 40 percent of the current market. The supply of villas, residential lots and condominiums has also increased in the last couple of years.

Existen 17 desarrollos turísticos registrados en Los Cabos. La preferencia en la compra venta de bienes raíces es dentro de ellos, porque cuentan con amenidades como: seguridad propia, gimnasio, albercas, servicio de concierge y otras características de un resort. Invertir dentro de un desarrollo planeado en rendimiento y números deja mayores beneficios. Entre los factores que mantienen a Los Cabos en la preferencia de inversionistas se encuentran la situación geográfica, la calidez en el servicio, los atractivos naturales y actividades. Con campos de golf destacados a nivel mundial, restaurantes de chefs internacionales y galardonados spas que brindan una experiencia única de viaje.

So far, we see growth from the Pacific Corridor to East Cape and Cabo Riviera. I’m encouraged to say that development is virtually taking place across the entire destination.

There are 17 registered tourist developments in Los Cabos. The preference is the sale of real estate within these. They have certain benefits such as private security, workout facilities, swimming pools, concierge services and other resort amenities. Investing in a planned development leads to better performance and sales numbers.

Los Cabos has been preferred by investors for several factors. Among them, the geographical location, the warm service, the natural attractions and activities. The destination has golf courses that are known worldwide, restaurants with international chefs, and award-winning spas, all of which offer a unique travel experience.

Además, las grandes marcas hoteleras que se han establecido en el destino, llegan con huéspedes fieles a su marca, eso incrementa el atractivo de Los Cabos y aumenta el nicho de mercado.

Cuartos de hotel, tiempo compartido y residencias son productos que se integran uno a otro. Una vez que la gente conoce el destino se enamora y compran una propiedad como segundo hogar. Dentro de la industria gastronómica chefs han mostrado interés en aventurarse activamente en la oferta culinaria, perfecto para quienes visitan y para quienes viven parte del año aquí. Las opciones de vida nocturna y compras son un excelente complemento.

In adittion important hotels recently inaugurated come with guests who are loyal to the brand. That increases the attractiveness of Los Cabos as a niche market.

Often, when people come to explore the destination, they fall in love and buy property. These products are integral to each other; hotel rooms, residences and time share. Within the food industry, chefs have also shown active interest venturing into the culinary market. This is perfect for those who visit and for those who live part of the year here. The options for nightlife and shopping are an excellent complement.

Of course legal certainty both of a person and its goods make this a luxury destination that leads wellness. For all these reasons, the profitability of an investment in Los Cabos is the highest in the country and the added value will continue to rise. Definitely all growth involves change. It must be controlled. We must continue to take care of the environment, remain a safe destination, establish alternate routes for ground transportation and seek big investments.

The key to keeping Los Cabos a luxury destination is working together the different levels of government with private initiative to reach a planned developments.

Por supuesto la seguridad jurídica tanto de bienes como de la persona apunta a que sea un destino de lujo que conlleva al bienestar. Por todo ello, la rentabilidad en inversión es de las más altas en todo el país y la plusvalía en las propiedades seguirá en ascenso. Definitivamente todo crecimiento implica un cambio. Este debe ser controlado, cuidar el entorno, establecer vialidades alternas de traslado terrestre, continuar siendo un destino seguro y buscar grandes inversiones.

La clave para mantener a Los Cabos como destino de lujo, es actuar en conjunto los niveles de gobierno e iniciativa privada para alcanzar un desarrollo planificado.

THE EVOLUTION OF RESIDENTIAL

ARCHITECTURE IN LOS CABOS The geographic position of Baja California Sur resulted in a slower and different evolution than the rest of the country from the first half of the twentieth century up to the 1970’s. With a Jesuit mission, the urban design of San Jose del Cabo was developed with a grid layout and contained a few single-level buildings with a Spanish influence, thick adobe walls and vertical windows with simple stucco frames. The windows were protected by modest ironwork in a notable Romanesque style, the predecessor of the great Mexican Baroque. Outside the city center, the population was comprised mainly of fishermen who slept in simple wooden buildings with palm roofs that were distributed in isolated communities or villages along the coast.

La situación geográfica de Baja California Sur provocó una evolución pausada, y diferente al resto del país durante la primera mitad del siglo XX y hasta la década de los 70. Con una fundación misional jesuita, San José del Cabo se desarrolló con una traza urbana en la que se erigieron escasas construcciones de notable influencia española de un solo nivel, con anchos muros de adobe, ventanas verticales con sencillos marcos de estuco protegidas por retículas de herrería y algunos remates en forma de pecho de paloma, que hacen referencia a un estilo románico predecesor del gran barroco mexicano. Fuera del plano central, la población conformada principalmente por pescadores, dormía en sencillas construcciones de madera con cubiertas de palma que se distribuían en aisladas comunidades o rancherías a lo largo de la costa. 22

Con la conversión del pequeño puerto pesquero a un destino turístico, no solo se generó interés por la construcción y apertura de exclusivos hoteles para el público internacional, sino en la generación de comunidades residenciales. En septiembre de 1975 se colocó la primera piedra del desarrollo pionero de bienes raíces en Los Cabos; inspirado en el horizonte europeo. Don Manuel Díaz Rivera (QEPD) encontró un lugar alejado de la ajetreada Ciudad de México para establecerse con su familia para generar un desarrollo donde nacionales y extranjeros pudieran adquirir una residencia. Fue así, como el Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas detonó un creciente mercado inmobiliario. En un principio atrajo amigos del fundador y convenció rápidamente al público extranjero para construir en nuestro destino un segundo hogar, con un paisaje virgen que distaba mucho del moderno Acapulco o del pintoresco centro de Puerto Vallarta. The conversion of a small fishing port into a tourist destination generated not only interest in the construction of exclusive hotels for the international public but in the generation of residential communities. In September 1975, the first stone was placed in what was the pioneering real estate development in Los Cabos. Inspired by European influences, Don Manuel Diaz de Rivera found a location away from busy Mexico City where he could settle down with his family and create a place where people from Mexico and around the world could buy a property. It was how Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas ignited the growing real estate market. At first, the destination attracted the friends of the founder but it wasn’t long before others began to build second residences in this pristine and quiet landscape far from the picturesque downtown of Puerto Vallarta or modern Acapulco. As occurred in Manzanillo, the first residences in Los Cabos had a notable Mediterranean influence that would change the landscape that had hitherto retained its missionary foundation. The architecture was characterized by solid white walls with arched-shaped windows that opened to small balconies with forged iron railings and supported by wooden beams with mud floors covered by tiles. Knowledge came from architects and labor from domestic workers who arrived in waves on the ferry from Puerto Vallarta to the newly built Marina Cabo San Lucas.

Las primeras residencias en Los Cabos tuvieron una notada influencia mediterránea. Ello cambiaría el paisaje construido hasta entonces, el cuál se conservaba de la fundación misional. La arquitectura se caracterizaba por macizos muros blancos con ventanales en forma de arcos de medio punto, abiertos a pequeños balcones con herrería forjada, pisos de barro cubiertos por losas inclinadas y tejas sostenidas por viguería de madera. Los conocimientos de arquitectos y mano de obra nacional llegaban a borbotones en el ferri de Puerto Vallarta a la recién drenada Marina de Cabo San Lucas.

With the development of the Integral Planned Center by Fonatur and growing interest in the port, new housing developments emerged offering attractive opportunities for construction and investment in Los Cabos. The developments were painted in earth tones and featured stone details that alluded to the increasingly exclusive and elegant Santa Fe style from the southern United States. Architectural elements of traditional Mexican haciendas like arched-corridors, stone columns and central patios where incorporated. The construction adapted to a landscape that connected the desert with the sea and the green golf courses that became an icon and attracted more and more tourists to the destination.

Originaria de Tijuana, estudió la carrera de diseño industrial. Su vocación la encontró en el arte. Llegó a Los Cabos hace 24 años, el entorno natural de esta zona es su principal inspiración. A native of Tijuana, Tanya studied industrial design but found art to be her true vocation. With her mother as her biggest supporter, she arrived in Los Cabos 24 years ago. The natural environment of this area has served as an inspiration for her work. ¿Qué es lo que más te apasiona en tu trabajo?

Lo que me apasiona es hacer todos los días lo que me encanta, pintar. Pocas personas trabajan en lo que les gusta.

¿Quiénes te han inspirado?

Definitivamente mis hijos son mi mayor inspiración. Y mi madre mi mejor promotora.

¿Qué técnicas utilizas para pintar?

La técnica mixta es mi favorita. Me atrae aplicar materiales de cinta y pigmentos en polvos.

¿Cómo describirías el tema de tu obra?

El objeto de mi obra es feminista. Plasmar, capturar el poder de las mujeres y lo que pueden lograr.

¿Cuál es el reto que has enfrentado como artista?

El mayor reto ha sido el aspecto comercial de la pintura. Pues no se trata solo de pintar lo que me gusta. Durante mucho tiempo he pintado con los colores y técnicas clásicas. Ahora puedo aprovechar la tecnología y ser más arriesgada.

¿Qué te gustaría lograr en tu carrera como artista?

What are you most passionate about in your job?

What fascinates me is that every day I do what I love. Few people work at what they like.

Who has inspired you?

My children are definitely my greatest inspiration.

What techniques do you use to paint?

The mixed technique is my favorite. I love working with tape materials and pigment powders.

How would you describe the theme of your work?

The object of my work is feminism. I love to capture the power of women and what they can achieve.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as an artist?

The greatest challenge has been the commercial aspect of painting. It’s not just painting what I like, but what people want to buy and admire. For a long time I painted with classic colors and techniques. I now take advantage of technology and have taken more risks.

What would you like to accomplish in your career as an artist?

One of my goals is to have my work shown in a museum or an international exhibit space.

Dentro de Los Cabos en The Cape, a Thompson Hotel; la galería Muvezi en San José del Cabo y en The Loggia, One and Only Palmilla.

Hasta ahora, tener a cargo el programa de arte en The Loggia ubicado en One & Only Palmilla. Es gratificante interactuar con los huéspedes en un taller donde pueden relajarse pintando y llevarse su obra como un recuerdo de viaje, a casa. Además de supervisar el montaje, recepción de obras y ventas de diversos artistas locales invitados a exponer en The Loggia; todos tenemos un estilo diferente y los huéspedes pueden apreciar una variedad en las obras.

¿Es difícil desprenderse de una obra?

Al principio, tenía claro que el objetivo de pintar cuadros era lograr que gustaran para venderlos; sin embargo, llega una etapa en la vida que quieres conservar todos.

¿Puedes contarnos algunas anécdotas alrededor de tus obras?

De las colecciones que he hecho, la que más recuerdo es una de cuadros monocromáticos que hice en el 2008 cuando vivía en un lugar de clima invernal, rodeada de nieve, lo nombré “Todo está en tu cabeza”. Fue un período intenso en mi vida, sorprendentemente es una de las colecciones más populares. En San Miguel de Allende hice un auto-retrato parte de la serie “Mi mundo submarino”, de la primera exposición que se vendió en Los Cabos. Me enamoré tanto de esa obra, que le pedí al comprador vendérmela si en algún momento ya no la quería. Con los años, ese cuadro regresó a mi como herencia dentro del testamento de su dueño. ¡Puedo decir que, por primera vez, he colgado mi propia obra en casa!

In Los Cabos, I have shown my work at The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, the Muvezi gallery in San Jose del Cabo and The Loggia at the One & Only Palmilla.

Until now, being in charge of the art program at The Loggia at the One & Only Palmilla Hotel. It is very exciting to work with guests in a workshop where they can take their art home as a souvenir from their trip. In addition, it is fulfilling to oversee the installation, reception and sale of the work from various local artists. We all have a different style and the guests can learn from each of them.

Is it difficult to detach yourself from the work?

At first, it was clear that the goal was to paint pictures that would sell. However, there comes a time in life when you want to keep all of your work.

Any work that has captured you the most?

Of the collections I have done, the one I remember most is a monochromatic series of the snow painted in 2008 and called “It’s all in your head.” It was an intense period in my life and has been my most popular series. In San Miguel de Allende, I painted a self-portrait that was part of “My Underwater World” series. It was my first exhibition to be sold in Los Cabos. I fell so hard for this portrait that I asked the buyer to sell it back to me if, at some point, he no longer wanted it. The owner put it in his will that the painting should come back to me. It is in my possession again. I can say that for the first time ever, I've hung my own work of art at home!

Para planificar y construir hay que considerar principalmente al cliente y el lugar. Es indispensable adaptar el diseño a lo que él necesita, las restricciones del ayuntamiento, el clima y el espacio. Por ello cada propuesta es única.

Me gustan las construcciones del arquitecto francés Christian de Portzamparc y del mexicano Javier Sordo Madaleno.

En lo personal me gusta elaborar proyectos sustentables, aunque las propuestas ecológicas siempre tienen un costo mayor de inicio. Más que un estilo buscamos el racionalismo, es decir, adaptarnos al contexto justificando cada decisión que tomemos para garantizar un diseño funcional, completamente habitable y que evite gastos innecesarios.

To plan and build, we must first consider the customer’s ideas and place of construction. It is essential to adapt the design to what the customer needs, the climate and the space and any restrictions by the municipality. This is why each proposal is unique.

I like the buildings from the French architect Christian de Portzamparc and the Mexican, Javier Sordo Madaleno.

Personally, I like to develop sustainable projects, although ecological proposals always have a higher startup cost. More than a style, we seek to achieve rationalism, this means, adapting the context and justifying every decision we make to ensure a fully habitable, functional design while avoiding unnecessary expenses.

¿Con qué elementos o materiales te sientes más cómodo trabajando?

Me gusta trabajar con elementos de la arquitectura mexicana como el tabique y el adobe, por sus propiedades térmicas y acústicas. Además son materiales que se adaptan a distintos estilos mediterráneo, mexicano, contemporáneo.

¿Qué es lo que más te apasiona de tu trabajo?

Es de suma importancia que haya una conexión entre el arquitecto y el cliente. El proceso de elaborar, revisar y elegir cada elemento de la construcción debe disfrutarse. Cuando existe esa confianza se pueden dar recomendaciones de lo que el cliente necesita y adaptarlo a lo que quiere.

¿Cuál es el reto más grande que has enfrentado en Los Cabos?

El diseño de la arquitectura urbana. Creo que deberíamos estar pensando en proyectos más amigables con el medio ambiente, donde el uso de vehículos pueda reducirse. Escuelas cercanas a desarrollos habitacionales, rutas definidas de transporte urbano, zonas peatonales y apertura de vías para bicicletas.

¿Qué recomendaciones darías a quienes buscan construir o adquirir una propiedad en Los Cabos?

Los Cabos es un lugar tranquilo que se ha adaptado a diferentes estilos arquitectónicos, existen opciones para todos los gustos y presupuestos. Los procesos, permisos, regulaciones pueden prolongar la obra; sin embargo la paciencia es la clave para obtener una vivienda de ensueño.

What elements or materials do you feel most comfortable working with?

I like working with elements from Mexican architecture such as partition walls and adobe for their thermal and acoustic properties. There are also materials that adapt to different styles such as Mediterranean, Mexican or Contemporary.

What are you most passionate about?

It is extremely important that there is a connection between the architect and the client. The process of planning, reviewing and choosing each element of the construction should be enjoyable. When this confidence exists, we can offer recommendations on what the customer needs and adapt it to what he or she wants.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in Los Cabos?

The urban architecture design. We should be thinking of more environmentally friendly projects where vehicle use can be reduced. We need schools near housing developments, defined urban transportation routes, pedestrian areas and bicycle paths.

What recommendations would you give to those looking to build or buy in Los Cabos?

Los Cabos is a quiet place that has adapted to different architectural styles. There are options for all tastes and budgets. Processes, permits, and regulations can extend construction. However, patience is the key to a dream home.

What contribution would you like to leave in Los Cabos?

A satisfactory experience for people we have worked for. A house can be beautiful on the outside but if the inhabitants do not identify with the inside, it does not work. I would like hear that houses that have been enjoyed the most were the ones designed by us.

¿Qué aportación quisieras dejar en Los Cabos?

Una experiencia satisfactoria para las personas con quien hemos trabajado. Una casa puede ser preciosa por fuera, pero si quienes la habitan no se sienten identificadas, no sirve. Quisiera que digan que las casas que más se disfrutaron fueron las que realizamos nosotros.

¿Qué es lo que más te apasiona de hacer tu trabajo?

Todos los proyectos son interesantes, cuando comienzo con uno nuevo vibro de una forma diferente. Pensar en qué formato voy a trabajar, el diseño y búsqueda de colores me mueve.

¿Cuándo te diste cuenta de tu vocación?

Desde muy pequeño me ha gustado dibujar y pintar, mi búsqueda se fue reforzando al estar en variados talleres, conocer a diferentes maestros y artistas, estudiar las obras en museos y galerías y poner en práctica ejercicios aprendidos.

¿Quiénes han influenciado en tu estilo artístico?

Tuve la fortuna de ser uno de los últimos alumnos de Luis Alberto Solari, reconocido pintor de Uruguay. Él, junto con Mario González Sosa han sido mi mayor influencia. Más tarde, descubrí la obra constructivista de Joaquín Torres García. Estudié a los muralistas de México, el movimiento de arte oaxaqueño, la pintura expresionista norteamericana. En fin, fui ampliando mi bagaje de estilos con todo esto.

What part of your job are you the most passionate about?

All projects are interesting but there’s a different vibe when I start a new one. Thinking about the format I will work in, the design and the color scheme moves me.

When did you discover this was your vocation?

I liked to draw and paint from a very young age. My search was reinforced by participating in various workshops, meeting different teachers and artists, studying the works in museums and galleries and implementing the learned exercises.

Who has influenced your artistic style?

I was fortunate to be one of the last students of Luis Alberto Solari, the renowned painter from Uruguay. He, along with Mario González Sosa, were early influences on my technique. Later I discovered the Constructivist work of Joaquin Torres Garcia. I studied the Mexican muralists, the Oaxaqueño movement, the expressionist American painting. They all expanded my range of styles.

Lo más contemporáneo que he utilizado son láminas de acetato, dan una impresión interesante y he recibido mención honorífica en la bienal de Baja California Sur por esa técnica.

¿Quién te ha inspirado para seguir creciendo?

Sin duda mi esposa, mi hija, la familia. La gente que me rodea y el lugar donde vivo son detonadores que me inspiran. El nacimiento de mi hija. Este evento despertó en mi una pasión totalmente diferente de lo que antes buscaba.

¿Cuál es tu contribución a la cultura en Los Cabos?

Mi contribución es ofrecer a la comunidad de Los Cabos el acercamiento a espacios donde maestros y artistas exhiben sus obras de arte para su apreciación, contemplación, reflexión, crítica, etc. De esta manera el conocimiento adquirido puede estar al alcance para generar talleres de expresión plástica. La educación en el arte de niños, jóvenes y adultos es básica para las diferentes generaciones involucradas en la libertad de expresión, y la documentación que de ahí deriva es fundamental en nuestro transitar por el mundo.

Surge con la intención de generar espacios de exposición a artistas locales, nacionales e internacionales que encuentran inspiración en esta península.

What is your contribution to culture in Los Cabos?

My contribution is to provide the community of Los Cabos an approach to spaces where teachers and artists exhibit their works of art for appreciation, contemplation, reflection, criticism, etc. Thus the knowledge gained can be shared to generate artistic expression workshops. Art education of children, youth and adults is essential for the different generations involved in freedom of expression, and the documentation derived from it is fundamental for our transit in the world.

How did Tendencia Avenue get started?

It arose from the desire to open new spaces for local, national or international artists that find inspiration in this peninsula. We live in a community where arts and culture are taken for granted. Even so, there are few galleries in Los Cabos that offer space for other artists. This project is precisely to meet that need. I am involved in talking with the artists, knowing their work, and supervising the mounting of an exhibition. There are artists who have been painting for a lifetime, others who have visited Baja California Sur and their work is inspired by this land. We have tried to make room for them all at different times.

Mientras realizaba una maestría en producción de sets de televisión en España, me sentí atraída por la idea de dar personalidad a cada espacio. La mayoría de las veces no es necesario cambiarlo todo, jugando con el mobiliario que ya tienes, la iluminación correcta, acentos y accesorios se puede lograr un gran cambio. El diseño de interiores no debe imponer un estilo, debe capturar la identidad de cada persona. Crear confianza con el cliente, conocer su estilo de vida y personalidad, después sugiero elementos para decorar. Siempre procuro crear sitios de confort, una interrelación de colores, formas, texturas y luz. Transmitir ese glamour interno, con un toque único de cada persona.

¿Qué diseñadores de interiores admiras?

While I was getting a Master’s Degree in television production set design in Spain, I was attracted to the idea of giving empty spaces a personality. Most of the times is not necessary to change everything. You can play with furniture that you already have. With the correct accents and accessories you can make a big change. Interior design should not impose a style, but should work to capture the identity of each person. First, I try to create a connection by learning about their personalities and lifestyle. After that, I can suggest how to translate both into the space. Always seek to create a place of comfort and an interplay of colors, shapes, textures, lights and personality. Transmit that inner glamor with a unique touch.

¿Qué consejos darías para amueblar algún espacio en casa?

Primero, seleccionar tus elementos preferidos en casa. El mobiliario y accesorios ayudan a conocer tu estilo para posteriormente agregar piezas nuevas que se complementen y le den ese toque personal. Si vas a decorar un espacio, no es necesario cambiar todo, se puede colocar acentos para renovar espacios. Mover muebles de un espacio a otro, hará también una gran diferencia, el secreto es arriesgarse.

¿Qué sentimientos experimentas cuando tienes un proyecto en puerta?

Cada proyecto es una nueva aventura que despierta nuevas emociones. Cuando alguien te abre las puertas de su hogar, terminas creando nuevas amistades. Ver la satisfacción en mis clientes es un sentimiento único.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to furnish a space at home?

First select your favorite items at home. The furniture and accessories help you to understand your style and add new pieces that complement each other. If you're going to decorate a space, you do not need to change everything, you can always use accents to renew spaces. Dare to move furniture from one space to another. You'll notice a big difference when you’re bold.

What feelings do you experience when you have a project?

Each project is an adventure that arouses new emotions. When someone opens the door of their home, you end up making new friends. A satisfied customer is the absolute best feeling. Every space has its own history and is a new adventure.

It is a sophisticated, growing market. Thanks to the hotels here and people of different nationalities, I have the opportunity to create diverse designs with unique personalities and style.

A mix of classic and modern styles. A game of reflexes and accessories with gold and silver leaf details, lamps, mirrors, fine woods and fabrics with a variety of designs and textures.

Trasmitir emociones, cuando la gente percibe en mi obra alguna emoción me hace sentir liberada, pues logré mi propósito. Cada pieza tiene parte de mi energía. Totalmente expresionista e innovadora. Generalmente abstracta. Muchas técnicas. Me encanta utilizar el deslavado, espatulado y encáustico; lo que me pidan mis manos. Mi preferido siempre será el canvas, siento que puedes lograr texturas y plasmar mejor la intención. He utilizado imprimaturas sobre madera y recientemente el acrílico plexiglass.

¿Quiénes te han inspirado?

En general me inspira la vida, soy afortunada de tener diversas experiencias. Como artistas me fascina la obra de Gaudí y Dalí por la figura complicada y extrovertida.

¿Cómo inicias una serie?

A veces trabajando, en otras ocasiones la inspiración llega en lo cotidiano de la vida, durmiendo, mi cerebro no descansa. Soy intensa en mi profesión.

Conveying emotions. When people perceive emotion in my work, I achieved my purpose and it makes me feel liberated. Each piece has a lot of my energy. Very expressive. Generally abstract.

Many techniques. My favorite are color washes, spatula painting and encaustic, or using pigments mixed with hot wax. The canvas will always be my number one preference. It’s where I can achieve textures and thicknesses. I have recently used printing on wood and acrylic on plexiglass.

Who has inspired you?

Overall, life inspires me. I am fortunate to have different experiences. As an artist, I love the complicated and extroverted figures in the work of Gaudí and Dalí.

How do you begin a series?

Inspiration sometimes comes while working and sometimes it comes during everyday life, even while sleeping because my brain does not rest. I am intense about my profession.

¿Cuál ha sido el momento más importante en tu carrera? Establecer mi galería. Ese paso de crecimiento marca un parteaguas en mi carrera por el compromiso que requiere producir obras constantemente.

I started in Monterrey at CONARTE, hotels, private events and auctions. In San Diego, the embassy in Dallas, El Paso, San Francisco, Los Angeles and group exhibitions in Los Cabos. What has been the most important moment in your career? Establishing a gallery. This growth step marked a turning point in my career due to the commitment required to constantly produce works of art.

How did you decide to open a gallery and why did you choose Los Cabos? Because of my need of a space in which I can create and my husband’s insistency, it was a momentous decision. People search for art in this destination. Even visitors think about acquiring art. It is an artistic place by nature.

¿Cómo decides abrir una galería y porqué elegiste Los Cabos?

Por mi necesidad de un espacio para crear y la insistencia de mi esposo por animarme a dar este paso. Fue una decisión trascendental. Es un destino en donde la gente busca arte, inclusive los visitantes viajan pensando en adquirirlo. Es un lugar artístico por naturaleza.

¿Qué sentimiento experimentas al entregar una obra?

Adrenalina y satisfacción. Si entrego una pieza es porque se eligió, me gusta hacer la firma de la obra cuando se entrega. Si es posible saber cuál será su destino.

¿Cuál es el reto más grande que has enfrentado como artista?

Por primera vez realicé un gicclé. Soy perfeccionista, me exijo mucho y rompí mis propios límites con esta obra. Definitivamente salí de mi zona de confort y siento que he tenido un crecimiento a raíz de esta experiencia. Es un gran desafío.

¿Hay alguna razón por la cuál dejas sin firmar las obras?

Si. Permite establecer un vínculo con el cliente. En verdad imprimo energía en cada obra, disfruto conocer dónde quedará y tener el registro de quién conserva las piezas. Además, puedo jugar con la versatilidad de cada una. Lo puedo instalar de forma vertical en la galería, sin embargo, alguien lo puede querer en sentido horizontal, es válido. Lo firmo en casa del nuevo dueño.

What feeling do you experience when delivering a custom work?

Adrenaline and satisfaction. If I give a piece to someone because it was chosen. I like signing each work after it is delivered. If possible, I want to know where its new home will be.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as an artist?

The first time I did a gicleé, a fine art digital print. I'm a perfectionist. I demand a lot and I ventured outside my boundaries with this work. I definitely went out of my comfort zone and I feel that I grew because of the experience. It is a substantial challenge.

Is there a reason why you leave your work unsigned?

Yes, it provides an opportunity to establish a link to the customer. I indeed put a lot of energy in each work and I enjoy knowing where the work is and to have a record of who retains each piece. Besides, I can play with the versatility of the piece. I can hang it vertically in the gallery. However, there may be a valid reason for someone to hang it horizontally. I sign it at the new owner's home.

El arquitecto mexicano Javier Sánchez a cargo del proyecto, pretende un efecto que fusione el edificio desde la entrada al lobby con la vista al océano. Además, se tienen corrientes de aire naturales por los pasillos, lo que hace destacar el sonido relajante de las olas. El diseño logra resaltar el entorno natural del destino.

Mexican architect Javier Sanchez was in charge of the project. He accomplished his intended effect of merging the building entrance to the lobby with the ocean view. In addition, natural air currents wafting through the halls carry the soothing sound of the waves. The design manages to highlight the natural environment of the destination.

Con acentos de la marca Thompson, The Cape está ubicado en una de las mejores playas para surfear. Crea su identidad para este destino con fotografías de surf, almohadones de cuero, y a la vez, está impregnado de las tradiciones de México, con coloridos azulejos pintados a mano y obras de arte del ceramista mexicano José Noé Suro. La decoración a cargo de Marisa Gómez Vázquez complementa espectacularmente el concepto.

The Cape is located on one of the best surfing beaches in Los Cabos. Using accents from the Thompson brand, an identity was created by employing surfing photos, leather cushions and, at the same time, Mexico´s traditional hand-painted tiles and artwork by the Mexican ceramist Jose Noe Suro. ¿Cómo inicia BELA Candle Boutique? Siempre nos han gustado las velas, sus formas y fragancias. How did BELA Candle Boutique get started? We have always liked candles, their shapes and fragrances. The need for quality candles that last, don’t smoke and add personality to a space led us to open our own boutique. How many candle collections can be found in the store? Actually we have two lines. The aromatic, which come in various fragrances, and a paraffin line. In the latter, we offer a variety of shapes and sizes, including cylindrical, square, spherical, and screen candles.

Within the aromatic line which fragrances are available? There are 50 fragrances available that we will introduce. At the moment, we have lavender, wood, sandalwood, grapefruit, tangerine, apple-cinnamon, blueberry, coffee and the favorite, lemon grass. Absorto en las tonalidades de la cerveza porque en aquel bar no había material más interesante a observar, por mi oreja derecha se deslizó aquella voz grave y pastosa ordenando una bebida. Era la misma voz que había seducido a quien sería luego su marido: “¿Sabes que no tienes que actuar conmigo Steve?… No tienes que decir nada y no tienes que hacer nada. Nada de nada… O simplemente silbar… ¿Sabes cómo silbar, verdad Steve?… Simplemente junta tus labios y… sopla”. Giré la cabeza con violencia y habré abierto la bocaza y los ojos en forma tal que ella sonrió divertida por el efecto y me pidió que me acercara. Siéntate boy, ordenó. Bebe conmigo. Fue lo único que realmente entendí de aquel monólogo que la mujer soltó esa noche sólo para mis oídos. El bar de ese hotel en Mulegé* estaba inmerso en la noche de uno de esos entresemanas aburridores en que los gatos solitarios salen a husmear y a ver qué ocurre. El barman, el mesero, La Voz y yo estábamos siendo los únicos fantasmas de aquel lugar extraviado en las playas que bordean el golfo de la antigua California mexicana. Si una mujer de verdad debe tener el corazón como una puerta giratoria, Faulkner acertaba con ésta. Entré en su órbita mareado por los bajos registros en el fieltro de esa voz que me arropaba y por los dorados reflejos de una mirada que esta vez no era desafiante ni altiva sino juguetona, pero que igual incendió mi alma imberbe de conscripto.

A medio siglo de distancia, quiero suponer que me confió algunos secretos de los hombres que la amaron fuera de la pantalla. Del viejo Bogart que la convenció con su estilo matador de sujeto maloso pero buenazo, y que terminó muriéndosele cirrótico y latoso; me habrá contado de las perradas dictatoriales sufridas en los rodajes de Howard Hawks, o acerca de las veladas tranquilas con Jason Robards, dedicándole escasos comentarios a la insulsa temporada con el mafiosillo Sinatra.

No registré los detalles ni los qué de entonces; solamente recuerdo los cómo en las graves modulaciones de aquella voz, ahora que leo su obituario y evoco la página inicial del cuaderno escolar en el que al día siguiente estampé, original y ufano: “Querido diario: Pasé la noche de anoche con Lauren Bacall. Perdón: Pasé la noche de anoche escuchando a…” ¿Quién era yo –un chamaco que empezaba a pelechar— para faltarle al respeto a una hermosa dama que aquella noche de tragos sólo quiso hablar? *Hotel Serenidad, invierno de 1970 JUAN MELGAR

She must have told me about the dictatorial dirty tricks she suffered while shooting with Howard Hawks, or about the quiet evenings with Jason Robards, but I believe she said little about the dull season she spent with the gangster Sinatra... I didn’t keep record of the details then. I only remember the severe modulations of the voice. When I read her obituary, it evoked a memory of the next day when I grandly wote on the first page of a school notebook: "Dear Diary: I spent the night last night with Lauren Bacall. Sorry. I spent the night last night listening to... "

The bar of this hotel in Mulege* was immersed in one of those boring mid-week evenings when solitary cats come out to snoop and see what happens. The bartender, a waiter, the voice and I were the only ghosts in that place on one of the lost beaches bordering the Gulf of the ancient Mexican California.

Aparentemente la península de Baja California Sur es un lugar aislado, remoto y lejano. Sin embargo, es un destino turístico que crece con ideas vanguardistas. Quienes habitamos este lugar tenemos la oportunidad de crear un destino diverso tan amplio como su territorio lo permita.

Inicialmente esta península era un territorio indígena de pericúes, cochimíes y guaycuras que, conquistado por los españoles, visitado por los ambiciosos ingleses y ocupado por los franceses, se transformó en lo que es ahora: una mezcla de nacionalidades que da origen a uno de los Estados más insólitos y únicos de México.

Initially, this peninsula was populated by Pericues, Cochimies and Guaycuras. After being conquered by the Spaniards, visited by the ambitious British and occupied by the French, the land was transformed into what it is today: a mixture of nationalities, constituting one of the most unusual and unique states of Mexico.

¿Cómo era adquirida la propiedad en Baja California Sur en un principio? ¿Quién titula las tierras?

How was property acquired in Baja California Sur in the first place? Who granted ownership to the land?

Los predios privados en este Estado inicialmente fueron titulados por el gobierno federal a través de títulos presidenciales, principalmente expedidos por el presidente Benito Juárez a partir de 1859. A dichos títulos de propiedad se les conoce como títulos primordiales. Es a partir de éstos que comienza la cadena de titulación de todos los predios privados.

Private property in this state was initially titled by the federal government through presidential deeds primarily issued by President Benito Juarez beginning in 1859. Otros predios fueron concedidos también por el gobierno federal en beneficio de grupos rurales denominados tierras ejidales o ejidos. Tienen como fin común el desarrollo de actividades agrícolas, ganaderas o forestales para el autoconsumo. Lo anterior sin olvidar que aún existen tierras propiedad del gobierno federal denominadas Terrenos Nacionales. Históricamente existe una razón por la que inició la titularidad de predios en Baja California Sur. Se dice que, por la lejanía de este territorio, se temía una invasión extranjera sobre estas tierras y fue entonces que el presidente Benito Juárez, decidió otorgar títulos de propiedad en masa a efecto de que sus propietarios, de nacionalidad mexicana protegieran el territorio nacional. En algunas ocasiones dichos títulos fueron ratificados por autoridades políticas del Estado. En el año de 1973 se permitió por primera vez la adquisición de bienes inmuebles en México por parte de extranjeros, a través de los fideicomisos y por un período de 30 años. En 1993 se expidió una nueva Ley de Inversión Extranjera en la que se permitió la adquisición de bienes inmuebles a extranjeros a través de los fideicomisos por un período de 50 años prorrogables y a su vez, se permitió la adquisición directa de tierras a través de sociedades mercantiles con 100% inversión extranjera para fines no residenciales. En 1976, Baja California Sur se constituyó como Estado. La oficina de registro público de la propiedad ubicada en la ciudad de La Paz, mantuvo el control de los registros de propiedad para que posteriormente conforme se fueran constituyendo los municipios, cada uno tuviera el control y administración directo de los bienes raíces. A partir de 2016, los registros públicos pasaron a formar parte del Gobierno del Estado con el fin de guardar una coordinación uniforme sobre los bienes raíces y tener mejor acceso a los programas federales de coordinación y apoyo económico. Other land titles were also granted by the federal government to benefit rural groups. The land is known as “ejido lands” or “ejidos”. Ejidos have a common goal of agricultural development, raising livestock and practicing forestry for subsistence. In addition, there is still land owned by the Federal Government called National Land.

In 1993, a new Foreign Investment Law was passed that extended the ownership trust for a period of 50 years and was renewable. The law also allowed direct land acquisition by corporations that purchased the land with 100 percent foreign capital, permitting land destined for nonresidential purposes.

There is an historical reason for how land ownership began in Baja California Sur. It is said that the remoteness of the territory made President Benito Juarez fear an invasion by foreign forces. As a result, he decided to grant mass land titles to Mexican Nationals in order to protect the country. Some of the titles were ratified by the political authorities of the State.

Baja California Sur was declared a Mexican State in 1976. The Public Registry of Property office located in the city of La Paz kept control of property records. At a later date, when municipalities were incorporated, each took direct control and management of real estate. Beginning in 2016, public records became part of the State Government in order to maintain uniform coordination of real estate and have better access to federal coordination and financial support programs.

In 1973, the acquisition by foreigners of real estate in Mexico was allowed for the first time. Ownership was through trusts that were valid for a period of 30 years.

In 1992, the 27th article of the Mexican Constitution was amended to allow “ejido land” to become private property through legal agrarian procedures. Tendencia El Arte de Viajar

En 1992 se reformó el Artículo 27 constitucional permitiendo que la tierra ejidal fuera susceptible de convertirse en propiedad privada a través de los procedimientos legales agrarios. Los Cabos guarda una posición vanguardista en materia de seguridad jurídica inmobiliaria debido a que ha adoptado formatos de organización dentro de los desarrollos inmobiliarios con cierta semejanza a los que existen en Estados Unidos de América, pero respetando las disposiciones legales. De hecho, se puede decir que las reglamentaciones de los formatos de organización dentro de los desarrollos inmobiliarios rebasaron los alcances de las disposiciones aplicables a la propiedad, de tal forma que los sistemas de regulación de los propios desarrollos inmobiliarios han fortalecido la regulación y seguridad jurídica de inversión. Día con día se han perfeccionado de manera uniforme los formatos de organización inmobiliaria.

En el año 2007 se expidió la primera Ley de Propiedad en Condominio en el Estado de Baja California Sur, ley que regula la organización de diversos formatos inmobiliarios tomando en cuenta el hecho de que distintas propiedades son primordialmente propiedad de extranjeros a través de fideicomisos y teniendo características únicas de respeto y reconocimiento a la inversión extranjera.

Los Cabos occupies an advanced position regarding property because it has adopted master plans within real estate developments that bear some resemblance to those that exist in the United States. In fact, it can be said that regulations in such master plans have gone beyond the scope of the legal provisions applicable to the property. Consequently, the real estate development regulations have resulted in strengthened legal investment regulations and safety. Everyday real estate master plans had been improved accordingly.

The first Condominium Property Law in the State of Baja California Sur was passed in 2007. The law regulates various real estate organizations and takes into account the fact that different properties are primarily owned by foreign investments through trusts and have unique requirements.

Mientras el Chef Oscar me daba un recorrido por la cocina, rápido y fácil pude identificar los ingredientes que utilizaría para el platillo. Tomé un poco de hoja santa, salvia, tomates heirloom babies, naranjitas chinas, miel de Miraflores y chícharo tierno, con lo anterior preparé un chutney para sazonar un pollito rostizado. El diseño de la cocina abierta me agradó, se puede cocinar como me gusta, estilo rústico y a fuego abierto.

Les recomiendo ir a Acre a disfrutar de su ambiente natural y comida. Los Chefs Kevin y Oscar los esperan para sorprenderlos con un delicioso menú.

Hello friends!

I received an invitation from my friends of the restaurant Acre to cook with them. Chefs Kevin and Oscar welcomed me and opened the door to their kitchen so that we could prepare a dish with organic products grown right there at the property. While Chef Oscar gave me a tour of the kitchen, I was able to quickly and easily identify the ingredients I would use for the dish. I took some holy leaf, sage, heirloom baby tomatoes, chinese naranjitas, honey from Miraflores and tender peas. With these ingredients, I prepared a chutney to season a roasted chicken. I liked the open kitchen design. You can cook as I like: rustic style over an open fire. The chefs prepared a tuna ceviche with delicious tiger milk and decorated with flowers and radishes from the garden. It was a true delight for the eyes, but even more for the palate. I truly recommend that you visit Acre and enjoy the natural environment and food. Chefs Kevin and Oscar are waiting to surprise you with a delicious menu.

“La animita del Camino Real” Ubicada sobre una de las avenidas principales de La Paz, la capilla de “La Animita” según la leyenda, otorga milagros a quienes la visitan. Detrás de este relato, se encuentra la valiente historia de un niño: José Lino Manríquez Martínez nació en el pueblo de San Antonio el 3 de septiembre, 1855. Fue en ese año que su padre José Miguel participó activamente en la lucha contra el pirata Juan Napoleón Zerman que tenía rodeada a la ciudad de La Paz. En apoyo al general Manuel Márquez de León y al frente de un pelotón de la guardia montada, hizo prisioneros a los tripulantes de los buques piratas “Archibald Grace” y “Rebecca Adams”, a quienes condujo al puerto de Mazatlán para su traslado a la ciudad de México. La participación del Sargento Manríquez Martínez en ésta y otras acciones, lo hizo merecedor de ser nombrado Jefe de la Policía Montada del Real de San Antonio. Corría el año de 1861 cuando el Sargento Manríquez fue enviado a vigilar el orden en el matrimonio del comerciante Miguel González Rodríguez, y la señorita Soledad Rufo Santacruz. El novio, invitó a la familia Manríquez Martínez para que asistiera a la boda.

In support of General Manuel Marquez de Leon and in the face of hostile fire, he took the crew of the pirate ships "Archibald Grace" and "Rebecca Adams" as prisoners. He led them to the port of Mazatlan for their transfer to Mexico City. The participation of Sergeant Manriquez Martinez in this and other actions resulted in him being named head of the San Antonio Real Mounted Police. The year 1861 was underway when Sergeant Manriquez was sent to keep order at the wedding of the trader Miguel Gonzalez Rodriguez and Ms. Soledad Rufo Santacruz. The groom had invited the Manriquez Martinez family to attend the wedding.

Navarrete, representante del gobierno francés, había hecho prisioneros y confinado a las mazmorras del cuartel militar a varios patriotas liberales. Entre los detenidos condenados a muerte se encontraba el Sargento Manríquez. El 11 de noviembre de 1866, fue traspasado a una estrecha e insalubre celda de castigo, al cuidado del Cabo Crispín Sández, jefe de resguardo del penal y uno de los más abyectos seguidores del imperialista Navarrete. El pequeño José Lino, al llevarle alimentos a su padre fue testigo de cómo, con crueldad inaudita, Sández ordenó sacar de la celda al prisionero para disponer que en presencia del niño fuese azotado hasta sangrar y quedar desmayado de dolor. Al ver aquello, el niño encaró al Cabo Sández para implorar piedad para su padre. En respuesta, el tosco soldado le contestó con voz cargada de crueldad: –“¿Para qué quieres piedad para tu padre?, es un bandido malhechor y esta tarde a las 4pm será pasado por las armas en el paredón de las Ciénagas”. Abatido por el dolor, José Lino vio como el malherido cuerpo de su padre era llevado de nuevo a la celda. Regresó a la casa para avisarle a su madre y tomó una decisión que lo llevaría a las páginas de la historia. Partió hacia el lugar señalado para la ejecución y ante el Cabo Sández propuso un insólito trato: ¿Me da su palabra de hombre y de soldado respetar la vida de mi padre si yo me ofrezco para que me fusilen? El trato fue contestado por el iracundo navarrista con un leve movimiento. Y sin que se dijera una palabra más, el pequeño José Lino, de escasos 11 años de edad, fue lazado con una reata y arrastrado por entre los matorrales de la Ciénega y los choyales del área. Para corolario del despreciable asesinato, Don José Miguel fue obligado a cavar la improvisada fosa del niño héroe. El lugar exacto del sepulcro se encuentra señalado a escasos metros, donde el fervor popular elevaría una modesta capilla para perpetuar ese acto sublime de amor filial. Desde entonces, muchos peregrinos acuden domingo a domingo a depositar ofrendas florales, encender cirios o figuras de oro y plata en pago de fervorosas plegarias. Los fieles le han adjudicado infinidad de milagros. La tradición popular le llama La animita del Camino Real. 80

Stricken by grief, Jose Lino de Jesus watched as the badly wounded body of his father was taken back to the cell. Jose Lino returned to the house to tell his mother and made a decision that would add him in the pages of history.

He went to the appointed place for the execution and confronted Cape Sandez with an unusual proposal. “Will you give me your word as a man and a soldier to respect the life of my father if I offer to be shot instead?” The proposal was answered by the irate Navarrete with a slight nod. Without another word, little Jose Lino, just 11 years old, was lassoed with a rope and dragged through the bushes and cholla to the Cienega. After the despicable murder, Don Jose Miguel was forced to dig the grave of the heroic child. The exact location of the grave is just a few meters from where popular demand resulted in the building of a modest chapel to perpetuate the sublime act of filial love. Since then, many pilgrims come every day of the week to lay wreaths, light candles or place figures of gold and silver in payment for their fervent prayers. The faithful have been awarded with countless miracles. It has become a popular tradition to call the chapel “La Animita del Camino Real.”

Este programa provee un espacio de pensamiento y producción poco habitual en la comunidad de San Dionisio, ubicado dentro de la Reserva de la Biósfera Sierra de la Laguna. Además promueve el intercambio cultural entre los residentes temporales y quienes trabajan en las rancherías.

This program provides a space for thinking and unusual production in the community of San Dionisio, located within the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve. It also promotes cultural exchanges between temporary residents and those working in the ranches.

No other people in any region of the country, such as the Maya or Toltec area, or even the Olmecs, the oldest in southern Mexico, dominated such a challenging territory. In fact, what we know as the Baja California peninsula emerged about 10 million years ago, making it the youngest geological section in what is now the country of Mexico. This makes the peninsula’s ecosystems different and uniquely vulnerable, yet at the same time, extraordinarily beautiful. From the highest peaks, you can see the infinite beauty of the Pacific Ocean and the welcoming majesty of the Sea of Cortez hugging and kissing a land of mountains, oases, deserts, dunes and beaches. We have the Vizcaino Reserve, the El Medano delta, the oasis of Todos Santos, Santiago, the estuary of San Jose del Cabo, Cabo Pulmo in La Ribera, the majestic landscapes of La Candelaria, Los Planes, Comondu, Mulege and the sensitive nature of the Sierra de La Laguna and San Francisco. The sacredness of the landscape and the infinite variety of the biodiversity, land and sea have made the care of the environment an aspiration and a constant requirement of residents and visitors to Baja California Sur.

Colonial architecture served as the inspiration for the entry but the iron bar guardrails have been replaced with steel cables and the side walls are open to the views. As a result, the project has earned the name “box in the desert.” You just have to walk in to be impressed, not only by the cuisine but by the architectural elements. Rustic furniture reminiscent of traditional markets, local hand crafted decorative elements and multicolored prints complement the warm tones. Italian art covered in fabrics is also located throughout the setting.

El Triunfo CHIMENEA LA RAMONA La R a m o n a Fi r e p l a c e SELENE OGDEN El Triunfo de la Santa Cruz, es como se denominó a la primera mina de la región que ahora conocemos como El Triunfo. Su entusiasta nombre se debe al militar español Manuel de Ocio, quien, a mediados del siglo XVIII, recibió la concesión por parte de la corona española para la explotación de minerales del sur de esta península. Con el pasar de los años llegaron a estos poblados inversionistas de diversas partes del mundo. Ingleses y franceses fueron atraídos por la extracción de recursos, primordialmente de metales como el oro y la plata. Sin embargo, hasta 1880, durante la época Porfirista es que El Triunfo llegó a su apogeo. La Ramona, como fue bautizada la chimenea principal de 47 metros de altura, fue construida en el año de 1890. Su diseño se le atribuye a Gustav Eiffel, bajo el encargo de la compañía minera El Progreso, de capital estadounidense. Eventualmente, la industria empezó a declinar y la chimenea fue clausurada. 88

El Triunfo de la Santa Cruz (The Triumph of Saint Cruz) is the name given to the first mine in the region we now know simply as El Triunfo. The enthusiastic name comes from a member of the Spanish military, Manuel de Ocio, who in the mid-eighteenth century, received a concession from the Spanish crown for the mining of minerals in the southern peninsula. Over the ensuing years, investors came to the village from around the world. The English and French were attracted by the resources, primarily metals such as gold and silver. However, it wasn’t until 1880, during the Porfirist period, that El Triunfo reached its peak. DESTINO INVITADO - GUEST DESTINATION

The main 155 foot high chimney was dubbed La Ramona and built in 1890. The chimney’s design is attributed to Gustav Eiffel who was under contract to the American mining company El Progreso. In time, the industry began to decline and the oven was shut down.

In its day, La Romana was an engineering marvel and the symbol of an economic bonanza. Nearly 130 years later, it is a relic.

La Romana is an important historical structure and emblematic of earlier boom times. As a result, civil groups were given the task of carrying out a restoration project. The project was presented to the community and authorities this past April 23, 2016. The International Community Foundation (ICF) and Historic Corridor CAREM, AC have partnered in collaboration with the ejido El Triunfo to perform the work. Each year a student, from Lulu Tellez Academy, has the opportunity to debut and become a professional dancer. The mission of the project is to have professional dancers become mentors for new artists.

MISIÓN DE SAN JOSÉ DE COMONDÚ (1708-1827) El sitio de la misión de San José de Comondú está localizado a 50km al oeste de la misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto. Lugar explorado la primera vez por el Almirante Isidro de Atondo y Antillón y el Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino en diciembre de 1684; visitado de nuevo durante el verano de 1708 por los Padres Juan María Salvatierra, Juan de Ugarte y Julián Mayorga. La misión, dotada por Don José de la Peña Castrejón y Salzines, Marqués de Villapuente, fue fundada en aquel año por el Padre Mayorga quien permaneció en ella como padre ministro residente hasta su muerte, en noviembre de 1736.

The San Jose de Comondu Mission is located about 30 miles west of the town of Loreto. The area was first explored in December 1684 by Admiral Isidro de Atondo y Antillon and Father Eusebio Francisco Kino. It was visited again during the summer of 1708 by the Fathers Juan Maria Salvatierra, Juan de Ugarte and Julian Mayorga. Due to the shortage of water, the mission joined the Vista of San Miguel de Comondu, established by Father Juan de Ugarte, in 1714. The stone church was built in 1750 by Father Franz Inama.

We also appreciate the tower linking the two bodies (image provided by researcher Edward W. Vernon, in 2008, as a result of his missionary temple of San Jose de Comondu investigations).

Debido a la escasez de agua, la misión se incorporó a la Vista de San Miguel de Comondú, establecida por el padre Juan de Ugarte en 1714. La iglesia de piedra se construyó en 1750 por el Padre Franz Inama. A través del estudio de la arquitectura misional, que lleva a cabo magistralmente Salvador Hinojosa, no sólo se recrea esta misión, sino la idea misma de quienes la concibieron y luego la edificaron. El análisis de los elementos arquitectónicos que la componen, ofrece una vía de comprensión racional y emocional del levantamiento físico, planos de localización, plantas, detalles de fachada y partes singulares de la obra en su conjunto. El resultado es una aportación a los estudios iconográficos de la Misión de San José de Comondú. Un recinto de eterna belleza exterior de piedra tallada y esculpida en cantera rosa, con retablos grabados en polvo de oro, de acuerdo a la moda del arte religioso de su tiempo. Reúne un singular estilo que podríamos llamar renacentista barroco austero. Los sagrarios, altares, capillas, salas interiores y alas exteriores hacen un todo que se integra al entorno natural, mostrando la calidad artística de los misioneros que lo construyeron y de las manos indígenas que participaron. La edificación guarda un profundo mensaje religioso en los símbolos, adornados con suntuosidad y maestría, arte que es parte esencial de la identidad sudcaliforniana. 96

Through the study of missionary architecture, masterfully assembeled by Salvador Hinojosa, not only is the mission recreated, so are the very ideas of those who conceived and then constructed the buildings. The analysis of the architectural elements that compose the structure offers a way of rational and emotional understanding of the physical lifting, location plans, vegetation, façade details and unique sections of the work as a whole. The result is a valuable contribution to the San Jose de Comondu Mission studies. The eternally beautiful outer enclosure was carved and sculpted from pink stone and the altarpieces engraved with gold according to the religious practices of the time. The unique style could be called austere Baroque renaissance. The tabernacles, altars, chapels, interior rooms, and outdoor wings created a whole that is integrated into the natural environment, displaying the artistic abilities of the missionaries and the indigenous hands that were involved. The building maintains a deeply religious message in its symbols and sumptuously decorated art that is an essential part of the Baja California Sur identity. The architectural design of the Basilica style church features a large rectangular nave composed of one or more rooms, always in odd numbers. There are three doors and near them, on the inner side, three holy water baptismal fonts. The floor is paved with hewn stone, there is a presbytery with a wooden trellis and a choir balcony in which there is an old monochord and a bassoon. ELIZABETH ACOSTA MENDIA

Inside, there are three altars. On the largest, is a gold chalice with an image of San Jose and the baby Jesus, a tiara and a branch with flowers, both of silver. Another altar contains a large image of San Miguel and seven linen canvases with various prayers. This altar has a lectern of gold and three corners to symbolize the Holy Trinity. Una iglesia tipo basílica, cuya concepción arquitectónica es una gran sala rectangular compuesta por una o más naves, siempre en número impar. Cuenta con tres puertas y cerca de ellas, al lado interior, tres pilas para agua bendita. Está enlosada de piedra labrada, tienen un presbiterio con enrejado de madera y coro de bóveda en el que hay un monocordio viejo y bajón. Hay en ella tres altares, en el mayor está un colateral dorado con una imagen del Señor San José con el niño Jesús, una diadema y una vara con su flor, ambas de plata. Otra imagen de bulto del Señor San Miguel y siete lienzos con varias advocaciones, tiene este altar un ternario de palabreros y un atril dorado. En el altar, al lado de la capilla, está una imagen de Jesús con San José y San Juan Nepomuceno, una cortina de seda fina con un lienzo grande del padre San Francisco y otro pequeño de San Ignacio. Al lado del Evangelio, está en un nicho la imagen del Señor San Miguel, una cortina vieja de seda y cuatro lienzos con varias advocaciones. Existen también los confesionarios con sillas de vaqueta. 98

De las paredes penden nueve lienzos con varios pasos de la vida del Señor San José y tres más con diversas pinturas; tiene un cuarto con una hermosa pila bautismal de piedra y en las paredes un lienzo de San Juan Bautista y otro del Señor San José. Torre formal no posee. En el armazón de palos están colgadas seis campanas, entre medianas y pequeñas. El inventario describe los 126 libros que formaban la biblioteca. Una sacristía de bóveda hace una descripción de los diversos utensilios, imágenes y vestimenta para los servicios religiosos. Existe también una buena casa habitación para los padres, bóveda y otros cuartos para oficinas cubiertos de jacal. En 1827 la misión es abandonada y a principios del siglo siguiente, modificada para ser adaptada a otro uso, quedando únicamente una nave. En los años 1972 y 1973, el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia efectuó obras de restauración, sobre todo en el entortado de la azotea de bóveda de cañón corrido y detalles en los muros de mampostería de piedra.

On the altar, next to the chapel, is an image of Jesus with San Jose and San Juan Nepomuceno, a curtain of fine silk with a large image of Father San Francisco and another small image of San Ignacio. In a niche next to the Gospel is the image of San Miguel, an old silk curtain and four images with several prayers. Confessionals with leather chairs are also in this area. On the walls, hang nine paintings with the stages of the life of Saint Joseph, as well as three other paintings. There is also a room with a beautiful stone baptismal font and images of San Juan Bautista and San Jose. The structure does not have a formal tower. Six medium and small bells are hung in a stick framework. An historical description states that 126 books formed the library. A vaulted sacristy provides a description of the various tools, images and clothing for religious services. In addition, there is a vault, a room for the Fathers and thatched huts for offices. In 1827, the mission was abandoned. In the early next century, the structures were adapted for other uses, leaving only the nave. In 1972 and 1973, the National Institute of Anthropology and History began restoration work, especially on the vaulted roof and stone details in the masonry walls. ELIZABETH ACOSTA MENDIA

En el año de 1991, la Secretaría de Desarrollo Urbano realizó pequeñas y muy valiosas obras de restauración en una fisura de gran magnitud que tenía el primer cuerpo de la única nave. Dentro de la nave actual existen dos pinturas de óleo de forma rectangular, rematadas en la parte superior en medio círculo. Una representa a San José y la otra a Nuestra Señora de Loreto, cabe mencionar que estas obras fueron catalogadas por la doctora Bárbara Meyer de Stinglhamber en su libro ARTE SACRO EN BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR SIGLOS XVII-XIX.

La biblioteca de este templo era una de las más vastas de la época. Estaba constituida por 153 volúmenes al momento en que los padres franciscanos se asentaron allí en 1773. Según consta en los inventarios que nos facilitaron el Lic. Sergio Ávila y el Lic. Eligio Moisés Coronado. Mediante el acopio de estas joyas bibliográficas, los jesuitas tuvieron la oportunidad de enriquecerse espiritualmente leyendo un ejemplar de suma teología moral. Cabe decir que hasta el año de 1695 se habían publicado tres volúmenes de esta obra, cuyo autor es el capuchino español Jaime Corella (16571699), gran teólogo y predicador. Según documentos de la época, los ornamentos que se compraron con grandes economías tenían la finalidad de inculcar a los californios el debido respeto y a la vez darle prestigio al culto católico. El retablo fue un medio de expresión, cuya función primordial era servir de elemento didácticoreligioso; en él se plasma una historia que al contemplar se aprendía de ella.

In 1991, the Ministry of Urban Development completed small but very important restorations in large cracks in the main body of the nave. Within the current nave, there are two rectangular oil paintings finished off in a half circle. One represents San Jose and the other Our Lady of Loreto. It is worth noting that these works were cataloged by Dr. Barbara Meyer de Stinglhamber in her book SACRED ART IN BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR XVII-XIX CENTURIES. The library contained in this place of worship was one of the most comprehensive in its day. There were 153 volumes at the time the Franciscans settled in the area in 1773, as stated in the inventories provided by Lic. Sergio Avila and Lic. Moses Eligio Coronado. Through the collection of these bibliographic jewels, the Jesuits had the opportunity to spiritually enrich themselves by reading a copy of the utmost moral theology. In fact, by 1695, three volumes of these works had already been published. The author was the Spanish Capuchin Jaime Corella (16571699), a renowned theologian and preacher. Es importante tomar en cuenta que la Constitución de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos prohíbe a extranjeros obtener la propiedad directa sobre inmuebles ubicados en la zona restringida, ésta abarca 100 kms a lo largo de fronteras y 50 kms a lo largo de la costa. No obstante, lo anterior, la Ley de Inversión Extranjera permite a sociedades con participación de capital extranjero (incluso hasta con el 100%) adquirir el dominio directo siempre y cuando no sea para fines residenciales y se de aviso a la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores. En el caso de extranjeros personas físicas o morales pueden adquirir propiedades en la zona restringida a través de la figura del fideicomiso.

First of all, it is important to understand that the Mexican Constitution forbids foreigners to acquire direct ownership in real estate located within the restricted area. The restricted area consists of property within 100 kilometers, or 62 miles, of international borders and within 50 kilometers, or 31 miles, from coastlines. However, Mexico’s Foreign Investment Law allows companies to invest their own capital to acquire up to 100 percent ownership of real estate within said area, provided that it is not for residential purposes and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is notified. Foreign individuals or entities may acquire properties within the restricted area through a trust.

Antes de firmar cualquier contrato para la compra de un inmueble es importante observar lo siguiente:

Prior to the execution of any contract for the purchase of real estate, it is important to observe the following.

1. Obtener del Registro Público de la Propiedad el folio real del inmueble en donde se encuentra el historial del inmueble, sus distintos dueños y operaciones de compraventa.

1. Obtain a folio of background information from the Public Registry of Property where the real estate is registered. The folio will contain the history of the real estate, including different owners and the various transactions corresponding to the property.

2. Obtener un certificado vigente de libertad de gravámenes. 3. Asegurarse de que se trate de propiedad privada y que no existan derechos ejidales sobre ella o que se encuentre todo o parte del inmueble en una zona federal marítimo terrestre que requiera de una concesión.

2. Obtain a valid certificate of no lien. 3. Ensure that the real estate is private property and no ejido rights exist, or that is not totally or partially located in a maritime or terrestrial federal zone that requires a concession.

4. En el caso de terrenos, sugerimos hacer una inspección visual del inmueble para confirmar no haya ocupantes o poseedores distintos al vendedor.

4. In the case of a residential lot, visually inspect the real estate in order to confirm it is in fact unoccupied and that there are no other owners in addition to the seller.

5. Si el propietario está casado(a) solicitar acta de matrimonio para conocer régimen conyugal.

5. If the owner is married, request a marriage certificate in order to satisfy any marital rules and regulations.

6. Una vez hecho lo anterior se puede firmar un contrato privado de compraventa y designar un notario público para la formalización del contrato definitivo.

6. Once the above mentioned is complete, a private purchase contract may be executed. The contract must be notarized by a licensed Public Notary.

7. El notario por ley se deberá cerciorar de la inexistencia de gravámenes, adeudos y obtener un avalúo comercial del inmueble.

7. As required by law, the Notary Public shall make sure no liens or outstanding debts exist, and obtain a commercial appraisal of the real estate.

8. Hecho lo anterior se procede a la firma del contrato de compraventa definitivo.

8. When those steps have been taken, the execution of the definitive purchase contract is complete.

9. En el caso del comprador, éste debe pagar al momento de escrituración el impuesto sobre adquisición de inmuebles, normalmente los gastos y honorarios de escrituración.

9. When meeting with the Notary Public, the purchaser shall pay the real estate excise tax, and usually, all expenses and fees correspondent to the verification of the contract.

10. Por último, se inscribe el primer testimonio de la escritura púbica en el Registro Público de la Propiedad.
