A trip through Baja California Sur represents a myriad of entertainment options. There’s gastronomy, water sports and outdoor activities such as photography tours that become more popular day by day, either with historical tours through the famous cave paintings, the missions or the contemporary architecture.

n viaje a través de Baja California Sur representa una gran cantidad de opciones de entretenimiento, gastronomía, deportes acuáticos y actividades al aire libre, como tours de fotografía que se vuelven más populares día a día, ya sea con visitas históricas por las famosas pinturas rupestres, las misiones o la arquitectura contemporánea. Para hablar sobre este Estado eminentemente orientado al turismo, debemos mencionar y hacer justicia a las distancias involucradas, y su correlación con la infraestructura que une a las diferentes poblaciones. Debido a su geografía, Baja California Sur es un Estado largo y complejo para recorrer. Desde Guerrero Negro hasta Cabo San Lucas son casi mil kilómetros, en donde prácticamente existe una sola carretera como vía principal, rodeado de atajos secundarios, caminos vecinales y brechas de terracería. En su parte más ancha, existen unos 230 kilómetros del mismo Guerrero Negro hasta Santa Rosalía. El punto más estrecho, apenas son unos 42 kilómetros, desde el Océano Pacífico hasta el Mar de Cortés al norte del Mogote en La Paz. Esto requiere una combinación de conectividad aérea y marítima para optimizar los tiempos y disfrutar de una verdadera experiencia de viaje.

In order to speak intelligently of an eminently tourist oriented state, we should mention and do justice to the distances involved and their correlation to the infrastructure that unites the different populations.

Baja California Sur tiene tres aeropuertos internacionales, lo cual no es común ni fácil de encontrar en México. Únicamente tres estados lo superan: Chiapas, Sonora y Tamaulipas. En materia de turismo náutico, Baja California Sur representa casi una quinta parte de las costas de México. Hay al menos 15 puertos importantes, principalmente en el lado del Mar de Cortés. Los puertos proporcionan refugio y mantenimiento a muchos barcos de pesca y yates recreativos. Por supuesto, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz y Loreto reciben cruceros prácticamente todo el año.

Due to its geography, Baja California Sur is a long and complex state to travel. From Guerrero Negro to Cabo San Lucas is more than 620 miles. A single road practically serves as the main route. It is surrounded by secondary branches, neighborhood roads and dirt roads. At its widest part, there are about 145 miles from the same Guerrero Negro to Santa Rosalia. At the narrowest, it’s only about 26 miles from the Pacific to the Sea of Cortes just north of the Mogote in La Paz. This requires a combination of air and sea connectivity to optimize time and enjoy a true travel experience.

Baja California Sur has three international airports, which is not common or easy to find in Mexico. Only three states have more: Chiapas, Sonora and Tamaulipas. VIAJANDO - TRAVELING

El clima es fundamentalmente seco, aunque un pequeño porcentaje de la península es semiseco. El clima hace que viajar sea relativamente fácil durante todo el año. In terms of nautical tourism, Baja California Sur accounts for almost a fifth of Mexico’s coastline. There are at least 15 important ports, mainly on the Sea of Cortes side. The ports provide shelter and maintenance to many different fishing boats and recreational yachts. Of course, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and Loreto receive cruise ships practically all year round.

The climate is fundamentally dry, although a small percentage of the peninsula is semi-dry. The mild weather makes traveling relatively easy throughout the year. Baja California Sur is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. Many endemic species are found in the southern part of the peninsula. That’s especially true for marine life. The Sea of Cortez is known as the Aquarium of the World and is a sanctuary for thousands of species that make free diving and scuba diving two increasingly popular activities, particularly around the islands of the Gulf of California.

You cannot think of Baja California Sur without looking back at the salt mines, the whale factories, the Cabo San Lucas Arch, the Loreto Mission, the cave paintings, and the pearls of the Holy Spirit island. And don’t forget the sweetness of the mango, the Pitahayate, the Guayabate and the Mangate, the nights of shooting stars and full moons, the colors of the Pacific Ocean and the beaches of La Paz in Balandra. Después de ser reconocida con el premio Excelencia Turística, en el Tianguis Turístico México 2018 llevado a cabo en la ciudad de Mazatlán, Sinaloa; María Elena nos otorga una entrevista que nos permite aprender un poco más acerca de quién es, su labor como guía de turistas y lo que ha logrado a lo largo de sus 35 años de trayectoria. Originaria de Mazatlán, llega a Los Cabos en 1992 cuando la industria de cruceros buscaba los puertos más adecuados para sus rutas. El destino la reta a desarrollar actividades para el turismo náutico, elabora diversos recorridos, muchos de los cuáles siguen vigentes a través de varias empresas de servicios turísticos. Lo primero que queremos conocer de ella es por qué escoge ser guía de turistas. María Elena recuerda ese momento crucial en su vida, la elección de una profesión, lo que único que tiene claro es optar por una carrera técnica, y se inscribe en la Escuela Nacional para guía de turistas. Desde el primer año se enamora del plan de estudios, cada materia le confirma que es la profesión adecuada para ella.

After being recognized for excellence in tourism at the Mexico tourism fair in Mazatlan, Maria Elena allowed us to learn a little more about who she is, her work as a tour guide and what she has accomplished over her 35-year career.

“Nuestros visitantes buscan crear sus propios recuerdos, vivencias y relatos. Quieren conectarse con el patrimonio cultural del lugar que visitan y compartirlo con sus compañeros de viaje”.

Originally from Mazatlán, Maria arrived in Los Cabos in 1992 when the cruise industry was looking for suitable destinations. Her challenge was to develop activities for nautical tourism and develop various routes, many of which other companies continue to offer.

"Visitors want to create their own memories and experiences. They want to connect with the cultural heritage of the place they visit and share it with loved ones."

In search of a new career, she studied at the National School for Tourist Guides. In her very first year, she fell in love with what her profession would be for the rest of her life.

LA ENTREVISTA - INTERVIEW

"Al principio, quería ser arqueóloga o antropóloga, una carrera relacionada con la historia. Sin embargo, decidí estudiar algo más rápido. Con el tiempo descubrí que como guía de turistas necesitas capacitación sistemática. El turismo requiere aprendizaje constante porque el guía de turistas es un embajador en cada ciudad e interpreta todas las ciencias: geografía, historia, astronomía y naturaleza, su responsabilidad es transmitirlas en términos comprensibles a los visitantes. Cada día se encuentra una nueva especie, otras se extinguen, la densidad de la población aumenta, disminuye, es multicultural y nuestra misión es asimilar estos sucesos para educar a los turistas sobre el lugar que visitan”. El guía de turistas está en contacto con las experiencias y emociones del visitante, es educador en ambientes no formales. María Elena busca expandir esta visión y alentar a más personas a hacer del turismo una profesión, que se dignifique esta loable actividad. Como parte de su esfuerzo, imparte conferencias al personal de compañías privadas y hoteles, alentándolos a convertirse en expertos sobre nuestro país y compartir la cultura de México con los visitantes.

“At first, I wanted to be an archaeologist or anthropologist, a career related to history. However, I decided to do something faster and I realized that this is a lifetime career! Tourism requires constant learning because the guide is an ambassador in each destination and interprets all the sciences, geography, history, astronomy and nature, and translates them into understandable terms for visitors. Every day a new species is found, and one is extinguished, the density of the population increases, decreases and changes and it is the guide's job to interpret all these events to educate tourists about the place they are visiting.” Tour guides are in charge of the visitor's experiences and requirements, the tour-guide’s job is to be an educator in non-formal settings. Maria Elena seeks to expand this vision and encourage more people to make tourism a career choice. Doing so is a very praiseworthy task. As part of her effort, she provides lectures to staff, private companies and hotels encouraging them to become experts on Mexico and to share the culture with visitors.

"Avistamiento de ballenas, paseos al arco, esnórquel, recorridos por la playa, observación de aves y ciclismo de montaña son algunas de las actividades al aire libre que se pueden disfrutar en Los Cabos y sus alrededores. Para aprovechar al máximo cada experiencia, es necesario tener un guía certificado que pueda interpretar y enseñar a los visitantes sobre estos sitios.

"Whale watching, archery tours, snorkel tours, beach tours, bird watching, and mountain biking are some of the outdoor activities that can be enjoyed in Los Cabos and surroundings. To get the most out of every experience, it is necessary to have a certified guide who can interpret and teach visitors about these sites.

Uno de los desafíos en Los Cabos es crecer junto con la infraestructura en la diversificación de la oferta en actividades recreativas. Es necesario construir espacios para la interpretación de nuestro patrimonio natural, como parques, museos y acuarios".

Being in touch with nature awakens the senses and stimulates serotonin, a contributor to feelings of happiness. It is through reconnecting with nature that human beings reach full degrees of well-being. It is also essential that all activities are carried out in a sustainable manner.

“El turismo sustentable a la vez que trae un bienestar económico, incorpora a los participantes y preserva el ambiente. El turismo de naturaleza o ecoturismo educa en sitio a los visitantes. En el turismo de aventura, la naturaleza misma impone un reto al ser humano. Esta península cuenta con enormes espacios para practicar cada uno de estos tipos de viaje”.

"Sustainable tourism brings economic wellbeing, incorporation of the participants and preservation of the environment. Nature tourism, or ecotourism, educates visitors on-site. With adventure tourism, nature itself is the challenge. Baja California has plenty of room to enjoy each of these types of experiences.”

"The interpretation of nature is to reveal hidden messages. Human beings love what they know and know what they are taught. La península de Baja California Sur es una zona geográfica del país custodiada por hermosos mares, terrenos semidesérticos, áreas áridas y secas que inexplicablemente tienen una atmosfera que cautiva por su fascinante flora y fauna, algunas endémicas.

The peninsula of Baja California Sur is a part of Mexico that is guarded by beautiful seas, semi-desert lands, and arid and dry areas that inexplicably harbor a captivating atmosphere with fascinating flora and fauna, some of it endemic.

En la entidad existen 9 Áreas Naturales Protegidas (ANP) tanto en tierra como en litorales e islas, cuya extensión es de 3 millones 256 mil 358 hectáreas, lo cual se traduce en el 42% del total del Estado.

There are nine Protected Natural Areas (ANP) on land, the coast and on the islands. The areas encompass 8,046,636 acres. That translates to 42 percent of the total area of the State.

De acuerdo con la Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat), Baja California Sur cuenta con 414 especies de aves, 359 de peces, 102 de mamíferos, 68 de reptiles y 5 de anfibios; así como 669 especies de angiospermas, 52 de pteridofitas y 3 de gimnospermas, entre otras especies de plantas.

Federal law protects the natural wealth of the Natural Protected Areas. For example, El Vizcaino was decreed a Biosphere Reserve in 1972 and encompasses more than six million acres, the largest in the State. Cabo Pulmo was decreed a national park in 1995 and contains more than 17,000 acres. Balandra is the most recently created protected area and was created in 2012 to protect the flora and fauna within the more than 6,200 acres.

Rhincodon typus comúnmente conocido como tiburón ballena, es el tiburón y el pez más grande del mundo. Los adultos miden hasta 12.65m de largo con un peso de aproximadamente 21.5 toneladas. Se sabe poco sobre estos animales enormes y bellamente moteados, los científicos estiman que viven alrededor de 70 años y alcanzan la madurez sexual alrededor de los 30 años. Swimming with Whale Sharks in La Paz Rhincodon typus commonly known as the “Whale Shark” is the world’s largest shark and fish. Adult measures up to 41.5 ft long and a weight of about 47,000 lb. Very little is known about these huge and beautifully spotted animals, scientist estimate that they live to around 70 years old and reach adult sexual maturity at around 30 years. It is believed that they give birth to live young, but no one has ever witnessed a birth of a Whale Shark. Whale Sharks are considered endangered, they are found in tropical waters throughout the world, but it is in La Paz bay where they migrate to, year after year for seasonal feeding. Little is known about these animals once they leave the bay or how many there are in the world. Here is where Jay Gitterns of the Whale Shark Diaries (www. whalesharkdiaries.com) comes in. La ruta del ' de La Canon Zorra Durante algunos años, mi plan era escalar la sierra, pero fue hasta que escuché de la existencia de las "Pozas Cuatas", que definitivamente me interesó hacer el viaje. Jesús Cota de La Peña, guía experto y explorador, fue quien me contó las maravillas naturales que encontró en su ascenso. Los abuelos y padres de Jesús habían nacido en la zona del Cañón de La Zorra. Él desde muy pequeño comenzó a andar por esos caminos para subir a la sierra. Le pregunté interesado, por qué otros guías no mencionaban las “Pozas Cuatas” cuando platicaban de su experiencia al subir la sierra. Me contestó: “Tal vez porque pocos las conocen, ya que esas cascadas están lejos de la ruta más conocida para subir y bajar por el lado del Pacífico. Por acá, por mi ruta es más tardado, pero ves paisajes hermosos e interesantes”. Platicamos un rato más y ya totalmente convencido, establecimos una fecha para la aventura. La subida sería en octubre. Cruzaríamos la península de oriente a poniente, entrando por Santiago rumbo al Rancho Ecológico Sol de Mayo. Ahí comenzar a caminar tres aventureros, dos guías y dos mulas por el Cañón de La Zorra hasta llegar al Segundo Valle donde es el campamento final. El primer día, fue una caminata de cuatro horas hacia el Rancho El Vergelito donde pasamos la noche. En el camino, nos dimos el primer chapuzón de varios en una poza que parecía un jacuzzi. Una de las ventajas de esta ruta es que transitas la mayor parte del tiempo a un lado del arroyo, encontrando pozas y ojos de agua para refrescarte y tomar agua. For some years, it was my plan to climb the Sierra, but it wasn’t until I heard of the existence of Pozas Cuatas that I was definitely interested in making the trip. It was Jesus Cota de La Peña, expert guide and explorer, who told me of the natural wonders he found on his climb. The grandparents and parents of Jesus had been born near the Canyon of the Zorra. From a very young age he began to walk the mountain range. I asked him why other guides did not mention the Pozas Cuatas when they talked about their experience climbing the mountains. He replied, “Maybe because very few know about them, since the waterfalls are very far from the best known route to go up and down the Pacific side. Over here (his route), it takes longer to climb but you see many beautiful and interesting things.” We talked a little bit longer and, totally convinced, I set a date for the adventure. The climb would be in October. We would cross the peninsula from east to west, entering Santiago at the Sol de Mayo Ecological Ranch. There the three adventurers, two guides and two mules would walk through the Canyon of La Zorra until arriving at the camp at Segundo Valle. The first day was a four-hour walk to Rancho El Vergelito where we spent the night. Along the way, we took our first of many dips in pools that looked like a Jacuzzi. One of the advantages of this route is that most of the time you walk along the bank of a stream, finding pools and springs of water to cool off and quench your thirst. Las Piedronas Casi al final de la tarde, llegamos a un pequeño bosque. En medio de la vegetación, tenía un conjunto de formaciones rocosas pegadas a un cerro formando pequeñas cuevas. Instalamos las casas de campaña, cenamos y nos dispusimos a descansar. Estuvimos como dos horas dormidos, cuando fuertes truenos se dejaron oír avisando lluvia, en cuestión de minutos comenzó a caer un fuerte aguacero.

Las Po zas Cuatas A la mañana siguiente, salimos hacia Las Piedronas, el segundo campamento. - “Vámonos antes de que se haga tarde”, dijo Chuy nuestro guía. Nos preparamos y emprendimos la marcha. Después de tres horas de caminata, dimos una vuelta a una piedra gigante, las mulas súbitamente hicieron un alto. Jesús iba al frente del grupo y Lolo el otro guía atrás. Nos señalaron que había que detenernos y estar alerta porque posiblemente las mulas habían venteado una víbora. Y así fue, unos veinte metros antes de cruzarnos con ella, estaba una víbora de cascabel cerca de unos matorrales, por suerte, al vernos se fue en dirección contraria, perdiéndose en la maleza.

The next morning, we headed to Las Piedronas, the second camp. “Let's go before it's late,” said our guide Chuy. We got ready and started the march. After three hours of walking, we turned a corner made of a giant stone and the mules suddenly stopped. Jesus was in front of the group and Lolo, the other guide, behind. They told us that we had to stop and be alert because the mules may have smelled a snake. So it was. About twenty yards further on, there was a rather small rattlesnake near some bushes. When the snake saw us, it went in the opposite direction, losing itself in the weeds.

El encuentro con la víbora nos quitó lo cansado. Al comenzar la tarde con el sol a plomo y después de haber caminado por el arroyo, escalamos una pequeña cuesta. Nos internamos en un paraje tupido de árboles, al cruzarlo y conforme más nos acercábamos a la luz del otro lado, descubrimos un hermoso paisaje.

The encounter with the rattlesnake scared out the tiredness. At the beginning of the afternoon with the sun high and after having walked streamside, we climbed a small slope. We entered a dense grove of trees, crossed through it and when we came to the light on the other side, we discovered a beautiful landscape.

Era como llegar al paraíso. El sonido de la caída de agua anunciaba una cascada, pero realmente eran dos en forma de escalones casi idénticas, habíamos llegado a “Pozas Cuatas”. Estábamos a la mitad del camino y el viaje ya valía la pena.

It was like reaching paradise. The sound of falling water announced a waterfall but two steps later we discovered we had reached Pozas Cuatas. We were only half way through the trip and it was already worth it.

Instintivamente, corrimos a resguardarnos dentro de las cuevas, ya adentro el guía prendió su linterna para revisar el lugar. Al iluminar el techo, nos dimos cuenta de que también algunas arañas hallaron ese refugio y así de rápido como entramos, salimos. Por fortuna, solo tuvimos una hora de lluvia provocada por un chubasco que amenazaba la península, y, aunque todavía estaba lejos, había influido en el clima. Near the end of the afternoon, we reached a small forest. In the middle of some vegetation was a set of rock formations that were attached to a hill and formed small caves. We put up the tents, dined and prepared to rest. We had about two hours of sleep when loud thunder was heard warning of rain. In a matter of minutes, a heavy downpour began. Instinctively, we ran to shelter inside the caves. The guide turned on his flashlight to check the interior. When he turned his light to the ceiling, we realized that spiders had also found the shelter and as fast as we entered, we left. Fortunately, we only had one hour of rain that was caused by a small storm threatening the peninsula and although it was still far away, it had influenced the climate.

Después de la lluvia, lo poco que dormimos lo apreciamos mucho. La siguiente estación era Palo Extraño. Los guías nos advirtieron que subiríamos dos cerros que se encuentran uno tras otro. Quería que nos hiciéramos a la idea de que aumentaría la dificultad. Nos preparamos para partir y por la mañana nos pusimos en marcha. Tras dos días de caminata, el agotamiento volvió y preguntamos al guía constantemente, ¿cuánto falta? Siempre con la misma respuesta; “Ya estamos cerquita, ahí tras lomita llegamos, es cuestión de caminarle tantito”. Al mediodía nos detuvimos para descasar y comer. Un poco preocupados por el ascenso, hablamos con Chuy el guía, quien nos dijo que fuéramos a nuestro paso. No te apresures, sino camina sin parar. Comenzamos a subir, la primera hora fue a pleno rayo del sol, luego agradecimos al universo que una nube nos dio sombra. Conforme subíamos nos dimos cuenta de la altura del lugar en donde estábamos. Al mirar al oriente los caminos y arroyos a lo lejos, ya se veían pequeños. También, hicieron su aparición los calambres en las piernas y las primeras caídas, así que prestamos atención a nuestra marcha. Íbamos tan concentrados que no notamos lo negro del cielo, hasta que se escucharon fuertes truenos e impresionantes relámpagos anunciando una gran lluvia. Una sensación muy extraña nos invadió. Estábamos sudados por la caminata, el clima cambió con la altura y sentías frío. De pronto, quedamos totalmente mojados por la terrible lluvia que nos golpeó por más de 90 minutos. Hubo momentos de tensión, silencio y miedo, no obstante, la atención de nuestros guías que estaban pendientes de nosotros en todo momento. Finalmente llegamos a Palo Extraño, donde había una pequeña cabaña con unas hornillas en medio. Toda la comitiva nos resguardarnos de la lluvia, incluidas las dos mulas. After the rain, what little we slept we very much appreciated. The next station was Palo Extraño. The guides warned us there would be climbs ascending two hills that were one after the other. He wanted us to get used to the idea that the difficulty would increase. We prepared to leave and in the morning set off. After two days of walking, the tiredness returned and we began to constantly ask the guide, “How much further?” We always received the same answer, “We are close. It is a matter of walking a little.” Arriving at noon, we stopped to rest and eat. A little worried about the ascent, we talked to Chuy who told us to go at our own pace. Don’t rush but walk steadily. We began to climb. The first hour was in the baking sun, then we thanked the universe that a cloud gave us shade. As we climbed we noticed the increasing elevation. Looking to the east, the roads and streams in the distance below were already small. Also, we began to experience cramps in the legs and the first falls, so we paid attention to our march. We were so focused that we did not realize the black sky until loud thunder was heard and impressive lightning announced heavy rain.

A very strange feeling came over us. We were wet from the sweat from the walk and cold when the weather changed with the elevation. Suddenly we were totally wet from the terrible rain that hit us for more than 90 minutes. There were moments of tension, silence and fear, but also of confidence in our guides who were watching us at all times. We finally reached Palo Extraño where there was a small cabin with heaters. The entire procession went there for protection from the rain, including the two mules. By the afternoon, the rain had calmed down. We set up tents outside of the cabin and slept waiting for the new day.

The environment had definitely changed. We were surrounded by pine trees and mountain flora and temperatures were about ten or twelve degrees lower. The coffee in the morning tasted glorious. We were ready to continue to the last camp in the Second Valley. We left early and the route was not as difficult. In the afternoon, we arrived at a pine valley. It was like opening a door to another world. Our arrival was unusual. An unknown noise from the sky caught my attention. I looked up and I could see thousands of crows flying over the area. It was a show. I took my camera and captured everything I could, enjoying each image.

El Picacho Definitivamente el ambiente había cambiado, estábamos rodeados de pinos y flora serrana, la temperatura era de diez o doce grados más bajos. El cafecito de la mañana sabía a gloria. Todo listo para continuar hasta el último campamento en el Segundo Valle. Salimos temprano, la ruta no fue tan fácil. Iniciada la tarde arribamos a un valle lleno de pinos. Fue como abrir una puerta a otro mundo. Además, la llegada no pudo ser más asombrosa, un ruido desconocido llamó la atención, provenía del cielo, volteé hacia arriba y pude darme cuenta de miles de cuervos que sobrevolaban la zona. We left at midmorning and in one hour we were in high places appreciating the landscape. We settled on a hill to capture images of Picacho. There was silence and we were all looking at the horizon for a moment before we began to congratulate ourselves in recognition of the great adventure we had experienced. El primero está a escasos 20 minutos y se llama Caduaño, es conocido por su balneario y el pan típico llamado pan bachi. Unos 10 kilómetros delante está Miraflores, es un poblado campirano con su plaza típica, los oficios del lugar son la panadería y los talleres especializados en talabartería. A escasos 5 kilómetros de Miraflores se encuentra Santiago, población rural que alberga una misión y un apacible lago; es una comunidad dedicada principalmente a las actividades del campo. Por otro lado, muy cerca se encuentran las aguas termales de Agua Caliente y Rancho Santa Rita. Este último es digno de un viaje para acampar, sentir la plenitud de la sierra, observar las estrellas y relajarse en las aguas termales en cualquier momento. En los alrededores, visita La Purísima y San Isidro dos pueblos rurales custodiados por el famoso Cerro del Pilón con paisajes bellísimos. To discover the Baja California Sur peninsula and the beauty of its five municipalities, a tour on federal highway Number 1 is not enough. Nor are the various "off-road" trails that wind like snakes and take you to places where you may not be able to find your way back. To truly see Baja California Sur, sea routes must be navigated. As a result, we will go to sea, to the Gulf of California or Sea of Cortez, as it is popularly known.

Muchos mares ofrecen únicamente paisajes, sin embargo, el Mar de Cortés te brinda la posibilidad de sumergirte en él, por su buena temperatura y la tranquilidad de la mayoría de sus aguas. Desde fines de abril hasta julio son meses ideales; y, cerciorándose de que no hay huracán próximo, los meses de agosto, septiembre y octubre son espectaculares. De alguna u otra manera, en el Golfo de California, un buen capitán, buscará la mejor opción para anclar la embarcación en el lugar adecuado y guarecerse del viento en caso necesario. Las diversas actividades te exigen llevar un adecuado equipo para esnorquelear, bucear, acampar, nadar, incluso caminar, y muy importantes, licencias de pesca deportiva expedidas por las autoridades competentes y permiso para desembarcar en algunas islas. Adiciona unos buenos binoculares, cámaras fotográficas y otros artículos importantes como medicamentos para evitar el mareo, bloqueadores y repelentes.

Este mar es hogar de una fauna que no vas a encontrar en otros sitios del mundo. Ahí convergen delfines, lobos marinos, estrellas de mar, peces con gran colorido, arrecifes, mantarrayas, corales, ballenas jorobadas provenientes de Alaska e incluso orcas nadando en grupo. Perteneciente a México, el Mar de Cortés concentra tan alto porcentaje en diversidad de especies que el oceanógrafo francés Jaques Cousteau corona a este mar como “el acuario del mundo”. Asimismo, el premio nobel de literatura, Steinbeck, y el biólogo marino Ed Ricketts, como resultado de seis semanas de navegación en estas aguas, dan origen a un par de obras de investigación, “The Sea of Cortez” y “The Log from the Sea of Cortez”, esta última producción del citado premio nobel. Many seas offer only landscapes. However, the Sea of Cortez gives you the chance to immerse yourself in it. The temperature is welcoming and most of the waters are tranquil. The ideal time frame is the end of April to the beginning of July. If there is no hurricane nearby, the months of August, September and October are spectacular. One way or another, a good captain in the Gulf of California will find the best option to anchor the boat in the right place and find shelter from the wind, if necessary. The various activities that are available require you to carry adequate equipment for snorkeling, diving, camping, swimming, even walking. Importantly, licenses are required for sport fishing and landing on some islands. Add some good binoculars, cameras and other important items such as medicines to prevent dizziness, sunburn, bug bites, and more.

This sea is home to a diversity of fauna you will not find anywhere else in the world. Dolphins, sea lions, starfish, tropical fish, manta rays, corals, and humpback whales from Alaska converge here. You can even see Orcas swimming in groups. The Sea of Cortez has such a high concentration of species that the French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau crowned it "the aquarium of the world." In addition, Nobel author John Steinbeck and the marine biologist Ed Ricketts sailed the sea for six weeks. The result was a couple of research works, "The Sea of Cortez" and "The Log from the Sea of Cortez." The last production was part of the aforementioned Nobel Prize.

El siguiente mapa muestra el paso obligado por el Puerto Comercial Pichilingue y el cruce del Canal de San Lorenzo y su hermoso arrecife en donde, si bajas a esnorquelear o bucear, se izará la bandera de buceo para efectos de seguridad por tratarse de zona de cruce de barcos grandes. Posteriormente entrarás al territorio protegido por la UNESCO como reserva de la biósfera: “Espíritu Santo” y “La Partida”. Ahí tendrás una variedad de sitios para anclar la embarcación. En travesía podrás ver diversas bahías, puntas, playas, ensenadas, islas, caletas, manglares, arcos pequeños que intentan imitar al de Cabo San Lucas (Ensenada Grande) y paisajes de montañas. Amanecerás en un hábitat en donde el tiempo parece más pausado y en donde el sonido del mar es más suave. Los arrecifes son un mundo maravilloso de vida y color. Recuerdo en la “Ensenada del Candelero”, cuando me encontré un pulpo que salió de una cueva impulsado por sus tentáculos. Ambos nos asustamos y nadamos en sentido opuesto.

Si tu preferencia no es nadar, una opción es subir en un kayak para recorrer el litoral compuesto de cuevas marinas, propiedad de los cangrejos, en donde las olas te salpicarán con su danza constante; o bien intentar el “paddle board” y equilibrarte bien porque podrías terminar en el agua. Las corrientes marinas no se ven, pero en poco tiempo, el viento y oleaje te puede alejar mucho de la embarcación. Portar chaleco es una buena recomendación.

It is an intersection for big ships, so if you snorkel or dive here, a diving flag will be hoisted for security. A 0.5 millas de la punta noroeste de “La Partida”, un lugar popular y de gran atracción se denomina “Los Islotes” (la lobera). Te tendrás que acostumbrar al olor a pescado. Ahí podrás sumergirte y convertirte en un compañero de los lobos marinos y de sus bebés, que por naturaleza son curiosos. Es recomendable nadar con las manos pegadas al cuerpo. A un macho alfa, por su tamaño y sus sonidos, lo reconocerás enseguida, su nado en línea recta te alertará del límite que debes guardar entre tu mundo y el de ellos. Diviértete como los lobos marinos que toman diversas posiciones, tan variadas como la forma de la roca que les soporta. Los lobos marinos cazan su pescado y las aves aparecen para poder ser parte del festín y luego cubrir de guano las rocas.

Aproximadamente en un par de horas a la velocidad de 10 millas náuticas llegarás a la Isla de San Francisco y después a San José. En la travesía tendrás oportunidad de broncearte recordando el color dorado de las especies que acabas de dejar atrás. Incluso, en ese lugar, podrías ver grupos de delfines que disfrutan nadar cerca de la proa a la misma velocidad que la embarcación. Incluso podrás pescar. Half a mile from the northwest tip of La Partida is a popular place called Los Islotes (the lobera). You will have to get used to the smell of fish and organic animal waste. Visitar Amortajada, en la Isla San José, es un destino obligado, una alberca gigante con el ingreso custodiado a un manglar. Cientos de saguaros agrupados como un ejército estarán esperando tu entrada al intrincado laberinto de árboles tropicales retorcidos y de raíces entrelazadas. Es conveniente hacer este paseo durante las horas de la mañana y asegurarse que exista algo de viento sino los minúsculos jejenes de la tarde te van a dejar picaduras muy molestas. Al fin del manglar, si eres observador, verás el perfil de un león que como esfinge resalta a lo lejos en la Isla San Francisco.

Una minúscula isla conocida como “El Pardito” se encuentra a poca distancia de Amortajada. Ahí viven algunas familias, hay una iglesia y pocas casas.

If you want to see a landscape that reminds you of the George Lucas movie Star Wars, sail to Punta Colorada. Amortajada is a giant pool with the entrance guarded by a mangrove swamp located on San José Island, is a mandatory destination. Hundreds of saguaros grouped like an army will be waiting for you to enter the intricate labyrinth of twisted tropical trees with intertwined roots. It is smart to take this walk during the morning hours. Make sure there is some wind to avoid no-see-um bugs in the afternoon. If you are observant, at the end of the mangrove swamp you will see the profile of a lion that, like a sphinx, stands out in the distance on San Francisco Island.

A tiny island known as El Pardito is located a short distance from Amortajada. There is a church and a few houses and families.

Algunos yacimientos de sal todavía muestran vestigios de su existencia. Una de mis atracciones favoritas es pasar la tarde anclando en “Mangle Solo”. En temporada de ballenas, este sitio es ideal para ver el desfile de estos mamíferos.

There are still vestiges of the salt deposits that brought people to the island. One of my favorite pastimes is to spend the afternoon anchoring in Mangle Solo. At sunset, the latitude offers an impressive view of the sierra combined with the many colors of red and yellow. It is perfect for taking photographs. A lighthouse at the end of the island can be seen in the distance. Pelicans form groups to search for food on the shore. I usually return to the boat while watching the sunset and listening to the eternal waves.

Undoubtedly, the strip of beach where the lighthouse is located is my favorite place. That’s why I now call it Playa Laura. I don’t see that as a problem. The Mangle will no longer be alone. During whale season, this location is ideal for watching the parade of the giant mammals. The journey I have described here could be accomplished in five or six days. However, to get to the islands that I mentioned earlier requires more time. The activities are similar. However, each island and each location will compete with the one you left behind. The next time you fly over the peninsula, ask for a window seat. If you're lucky, you'll see the entire voyage in a matter of minutes. We always return to La Paz with the memory of laughter and stories that are only spoken at sea.

Ha salido tres días antes de los palmares de San Ignacio Cadacaamán, en la frontera del desierto de El Vizcaíno, montado sobre la enorme mula baya de siempre y cabestrando la recua de doce asnos abisinios, cargado cada uno con seis latas cuadradas de veinte litros de agua que ayer rellenó en las tinajas de la mesa de La Berrenda. Representan su vida y la de los animales en las siguientes semanas. Cruza el último salitral para llegar a los médanos playanos cubiertos de chamizo y concluye el viaje. Descarga los burros, acomodando las latas de manera que formen una pared en “L” como resguardo de los vientos del noroeste. Sobre ella levanta la carpa de lona encerada que ha permanecido enterrada en la duna con la panga, los remos, la vela, las piolas, los anzuelos y las fisgas desde la temporada anterior, a salvo todo ello de la brisa salobre y de las mordeduras del sol.

Océano Pacífico

Desde la cumbre de la sierruca de piedras coloradas que se amontonan a uno y otro lado de la estrecha vereda, entrecierra los ojos y divisa hacia el suroeste la infinita planicie. Blanquizco salitral plagado de espejismos alargados, barcos de vela, árboles. Y al fondo, pero todavía lejanos, estarán los médanos y pedregales de Punta Abreojos.

From the top of a hill of colored stones piled on the side of the narrow path, he squints and looks southwest towards the infinite horizon. Whitish saltpeter is full of elongated mirages, sailing ships, and trees. And in the background, but still far away, are the dunes and stones of Punta Abreojos.

He has left the palm groves of San Ignacio Cadacaamán, on the border of the El Vizcaino desert, three days before. Mounted on the huge mule he always rides, he is leading a procession of twelve Abyssinian donkeys, each loaded with six twenty-liter cans of water that were filled at La Berrenda’s Mesa. They represent his life and that of the animals over the following weeks. He finally crosses the last saltpeter deposit to reach the sand dunes covered with brush and concludes his trip. First, he unloads the donkeys, arranging the cans so that they form an L-shaped wall as a shelter from the northwest winds. The previous season, a tarpaulin tent was anchored in the dune covering the panga, oars, sail, fishing line, hooks and spears to protect them from the brackish breeze and the bite of the sun.

Cuando las latas cuadradas se llenan del apestoso aceite, montadas y amarradas sobre los burriquetes, entierra la panga y los arreos de pesca para emprender –a la retaguardia de su recua de abisinios y a horcajadas sobre la mula baya de siempre— el largo viaje a través del desierto por los salitrales, los cerros de lava colorada, la mesa de La Berrenda, las dunas ardientes de El Rabich, el arroyo seco de San Ángel, el oasis de San Ignacio en que recompondrá la carga y restaurará energías para cruzar la sierra por el volcán de Las Tres Vírgenes y arribar al puerto de Cachanía, en el Golfo de California, donde un velero francés de tres palos habrá de embodegar su aceite de hígado para llevarlo a Marsella.

Desde el año de 1914, José Rosas Arce, Tío Locha, cruzó cada año la península por sendas antes holladas sólo por cochimíes, para montar su paraje de pesca en las finas arenas de Punta Abreojos. Otros lo seguirían en el transcurso del siglo XX y fundarían cooperativas pesqueras de abulón, langosta, mero, jurel y almejas que han dado vida a pueblos industriosos. Es la Zona Pacífico Norte.

When the square cans have been filled with shark liver oil and secured on the burros, he once again buries the panga and the fishing gear and straddles his mule to begin another long journey. They travel through the desert by the saltpeter deposits, the hills of red lava, La Berrenda's Mesa, the burning dunes of El Rabich, the dry stream of San Angel, the oasis of San Ignacio where he will redistribute the load and restore the energy ne requires to cross the sierra by the volcano of Las Tres Virgenes. In time, he arrives at the port of Cachanía, in the Gulf of California, where a threemasted French ship will load the liver oil and take it to Marseille.

Beginning in 1914, José Rosas Arce, Tío Locha, crossed the peninsula every year over trails previously traveled only by Cochimie Indians to set up his fishing spot on the fine sands of Punta Abreojos. Others would follow over the course of the 20th century. They would establish fishing cooperatives (abalone, lobster, grouper, jack mackerel, clams and more) that created a life for industrious peoples in the North Pacific.

Matthew W. Parr Bennett, nace en Los Ángeles, California el 16 de diciembre 1950. Se considera cabeño, de corazón sudcaliforniano. En 1960 se muda a Cabo San Lucas. Regresa a Estados Unidos para graduarse en la Universidad de Los Ángeles en 1977 con una Licenciatura en Economía. Al igual que muchos otros académicos, tiene el interés por preservar tanto el medio ambiente como el aspecto histórico del Estado de Baja California Sur.

Matthew W. Parr Bennett was born in Los Angeles, California on December 16, 1950. He is considered Cabeño, with a South Californian heart. In 1960, he moved to Cabo San Lucas. He returned to America to graduate from the University of Los Angeles, California in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Like many other scholars, he has an interest in preserving both the environment and the history of our State.

Just off the coast of Loreto are five desert islands and several islets. The islands are part of the Maritime National Park Bahía de Loreto. The park was officially established by a decree that was published on July 19, 1996 in the Official Gazette of the Federation.

The park encompasses 510,473 acres. All the islands are part of the Area of Protection of Flora and Fauna Islands of the Gulf of California. The park is included in the protected area because fishing communities are in the zone and they have great interest in conserving the natural resources. The general objective of the Bahia de Loreto National Park is to define and establish strategies and management mechanisms that allow the preservation of renewable and non-renewable natural resources and restore critical environments while promoting the social development of the communities established in the area. In addition, the environment is characterized by a high degree of endemic plant species, insects, arachnids, reptiles and mammals. Since the islands and the sea surrounding them are protected, the endemic flora and fauna are included in the preservation plan.

Coronado Island is a large volcanic cone that stands nearly 1,000 feet above sea level. It is located about seven miles northwest of Isla del Carmen and two miles from the Baja peninsula. It is a little less than two miles long and 1.5 miles wide. The total area is slightly more than five square miles. From Loreto, the trip by motorboat is about 30 minutes. Coronado is considered one of the most beautiful islands of Baja California. The northern part contains incredible rock formations where you can see numerous sea lion colonies, dolphins and a diversity of birds dominated by pelicans. In the lower part of the island, off the coast of the mainland, there is a long cove of singular beauty in the shape of a peninsula. The pale blue-green of the water that bathes the ivory sand offers an exceptional opportunity to enjoy saltwater activities including swimming, rowing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking and simply sunbathing on the beach. Para la protección y seguridad del parque marino, las regulaciones prohíben acampar durante la noche en la isla y las fogatas.

Con una impresionante superficie de 14.9 millones de hectáreas, esta Área Natural Protegida de carácter federal fue creada el 27 de noviembre de 2017 mediante decreto presidencial. Los Parque Nacionales son representaciones biogeográficas de relevancia a nivel nacional, que contienen uno o más ecosistemas de alto valor científico, educativo o de recreación, enmarcados por una gran belleza escénica que les confiere aptitudes para el desarrollo del turismo. En este sentido, el Parque Nacional Revillagigedo posee una enorme belleza natural y paisajística derivada de sus ecosistemas en buen estado de conservación, de sus majestuosas formaciones rocosas, volcanes activos y estructuras geológicas submarinas que configuran un paisaje único con vistas escénicas excepcionales. Desde ahí, es posible admirar la majestuosidad de Isla Socorro rodeada por el Océano Pacífico.
