Carta Editorial Debo confesar que la edición de otoño ha sido una de la más desafiantes debido a que la segunda ola de contagios limitó las expediciones que teníamos planeadas. Aun así, siguiendo todos los protocolos de seguridad, logramos ir a El Sargento y su anexo La Ventana y a Isla Cerralvo. Allí conocimos al nieto de Salomé León Lucero quien orgullosamente nos mostró la entrevista de su abuelo en National Geografic (1972), y más documentos que respaldan la historia de que Salomé fue el buzo que encontró una de las perlas más famosas de esta península. También visitamos San Antonio, pueblo minero con cierta magia por sus antiguas construcciones y tradicionales calles con piedra laja. Escuchamos la historia del lugar sentados en la plaza y al terminar la entrevista con Adolfo de la Peña, recorrimos el legendario Camino Real o Ruta de Oro y Plata entre San Antonio y El Triunfo. Me gustaría aprovechar para agradecer a Sonia Falcone por facilitarnos parte de su nueva colección para la sesión fotográfica en Isla Cerralvo con la subcampeona de buceo libre Estrella Navarro. Esta expedición fue guiada con mucho éxito por el talentoso Oscar Ortiz de Elements by Baja. Les recordamos que esta temporada de otoño es fecha del Bisbee’s Black & Blue Tournament que tiene más de 40 años anunciando el dinamismo de Los Cabos. Más de 100 embarcaciones se dan cita para competir por el premio de una de las bolsas más importantes en torneos de pesca del mundo. Eso no es todo. El Festival Internacional de Cine de Los Cabos celebrará 10 años de ardua labor en torno a la glamorosa industria del cine. Hacemos un recuento de las anécdotas más relevantes. A Note From Editor I must confess that the fall edition has been one of the most challenging due to the fact the second wave of pandemic limited the expeditions we had planned. Even so, following all safety protocols, we managed to go to El Sargento and La Ventana in La Paz and Isla Cerralvo. There we met the grandson of Salome Leon Lucero who happily showed us the1972 interview of his grandfather in National Geographic, as well as additional documents that support the story that Salome was the person who discovered one of the most famous pearls from this peninsula. We also visited San Antonio, a magical mining town worthy of consideration for the old buildings and traditional flagstone streets. We were entertained by the history of the town while sitting in the plaza. At the end of the interview with Adolfo de la Peña, we walked part of the legendary Camino Real or Ruta de Oro y Plata between San Antonio and El Triunfo. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sonia Falcone who provided us with part of her new collection from a photo shoot in Isla Cerralvo with national record-holding freediver, Estrella Navarro. The expedition was orchestrated by Oscar Ortiz from Elements by Baja who is our production partner. We’d like to remind you that this fall is the date for the Bisbee's Black & Blue Tournament that has been advertising the awesomeness of Los Cabos for more than 40 years. More than 100 boats gather to battle for the prize of one of the most important fishing tournaments in the world. That’s not all. The Los Cabos International Film Festival will be celebrating 10 years of dedicated involvement in the glamorous film industry. This edition is a recount of the most interesting anecdotes. Each season of the year is known to have its own attractions. Autumn may be the season that combines the ideal characteristics for traveling. As so, Baja California Sur is the place to organize the perfect vacation.

ay muchas razones inspiradoras para elegir esta hermosa península de 1,250km de longitud con: islas, playas, desierto, la flora y la fauna y, por supuesto, la hospitalidad de la gente.

El clima otoñal es mucho más agradable. El calor y la humedad del verano se han ido, y con él, la temporada de lluvias que normalmente termina en el mes de septiembre. El clima más fresco permite una variedad de actividades y deportes al aire libre. Aunque los días son notablemente más cortos, los colores de las puestas de sol son realmente espectaculares tanto en el océano Pacífico como en el Mar de Cortés. Autumn weather here is much more pleasant. The summer heat and humidity are gone, and with it the rainy season that normally ends with the month of September. Cooler weather allows for a variety of outdoor activities and sports. Although the days are noticeably shorter, the colors of the sunsets are truly spectacular on both the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez sides. Incidentally, it is the perfect time to organize a trip to the islands, where some low-impact water sports can be enjoyed that preserve the beauty of the islands.

La época de campamentos a Sierra La Laguna también encuentra en esta estación del año un tiempo óptimo para quienes prefieren actividades de senderismo, observación de aves o exploración sobre flora y fauna, paseos que son todo un agasajo a los sentidos, en particular para los más experimentados que logran llegar al pico de la sierra, el famoso Picacho para admirar los cambios en su vegetación y el impresionante cielo nocturno donde, sin luz artificial, se aprecian las constelaciones de una forma privilegiada.
Consequently, the camping season in Sierra La Laguna also finds autumn as the perfect time for those who enjoy hiking, bird watching, and exploring the flora and fauna that are a delight to the senses, particularly for the most experienced who manage to reach the peaks of the Sierra. The famous Picacho is the place to admire the changes in vegetation and the impressive night sky where, without any artificial light, the constellations can be truly appreciated.
Hemos mencionado en algunos números anteriores de Tendencia, las maravillas gastronómicas del Estado, pero es ahora cuando adentrarse en pequeños poblados resulta particularmente placentero al descubrir la cocina autóctona, recetas que se han heredado por generaciones y poder degustarlas en casas, en ranchos, o en restaurantes de comunidades como El Triunfo, Todos Santos, Pescadero, Cerritos, San Bartolo, San Antonio y por supuesto todos y cada uno de los diferentes poblados que se van sumando a lo largo de la Carretera Transpeninsular, la famosa Ruta 1, hacia el norte, hasta llegar a Guerrero Negro, o por qué no, hasta Tijuana. En este sentido habrá que hacer parada obligada en Loreto y probar la maravillosa cocina del mar, entre las que está la famosa e imperdible receta de la almeja tatemada.
Previous issues of Tendencia have already mentioned the gastronomic wonders of the State. However, autumn is when it is particularly pleasant to discover the native cuisine in the small towns and to taste recipes in homes, ranches, and restaurants that have been passed down for generations. You can find the same culinary delights in communities such as El Triunfo, Todos Santos, Pescadero, Cerritos, San Bartolo, San Antonio and, of course, each one of the towns along the Transpeninsular Highway, the famous Route 1, heading north to Guerrero Negro and all the way to Tijuana. In this sense, it is a must to make a stop in Loreto and experience the wonderful maritime cuisine. That includes the famous and unmissable recipe of the tatemada (pan-roasted) clam.

Mucho se habla de cómo eran San José del Cabo y Cabo San Lucas antes de ser conocidos mundialmente como Los Cabos, pero también es muy interesante la historia de principios del siglo pasado en la península, mucho antes de que el turismo marcara el destino. Me refiero a la pujante actividad económica, agrícola, ganadera y minera que existía en la zona y que gran parte de lo que existe hoy en día no tendría sentido si no hubiera existido.
Much is said about how San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas were before becoming known worldwide as Los Cabos, but the history from the beginning of the last century, long before tourism marked the destination, is also very interesting. I refer to the thriving economic such a mining, agricultural and livestock activities, that existed in the area and that much of what exists today would not make sense if that had not existed.

In addition to being president of the AMA Saving the Oceans Association, Sonia Falcone is an artist who has transferred her skills from the canvas to fashion shows.
Más allá de un espíritu creativo, Sonia irradia una personalidad filantrópica. Desde el momento en que viajó por primera vez a Baja California Sur, el ambiente familiar y el encanto natural de esta cálida tierra le robaron el corazón.
Beyond a creative spirit, Sonia radiates a philanthropic personality. From the moment she first traveled to Baja California Sur, the family atmosphere and natural charm of this warm land stole her heart.
“Cuando uno llega a Baja California Sur, parece un desierto muy vacío. Luego, cuando comencé a descubrir toda su biodiversidad, comprendí que había una riqueza incomparable que teníamos que cuidar”. “When you arrive in Baja California Sur, it seems like a very empty desert. Later, when I began to discover all this biodiversity, I understood there was an incomparable wealth that we had to take care of.” Sonia has recently begun to explore a new dream, diving into the fashion industry. As a result of the confinement, she decided to focus her creativity on designing her own outfits.
“I went back home and started designing some garments. Every day I would go to the fabric store and buy buttons, zippers, accessories, everything I could find! It was a lot of work because this was the first time, I did this in my life. It suddenly became so fantastic that I loved it."

Una visita a la delegación de Miraflores en Los Cabos, donde encontró un campo de flores coloridas en un jardín natural, se convirtió en el nombre de su nueva colección.
Miraflores, her recent collection, is inspired by her love for Mexico and the culture full of flavors, textures, scents, and traditions. A visit to the Miraflores delegation in Los Cabos, where she found a field of colorful flowers in a natural garden, became the name of her new collection.
"Cuando nombré la colección Miraflores, quería compartir la experiencia que tuve con la naturaleza que Dios creó, que está a nuestro alcance y que muchas veces ignoramos, pero que debemos proteger".

AMA hace alusión al verbo “amar” y su significado es: Amigos de las Aguas y los Mares. Aparte de contribuir a la conservación de los océanos, busca fomentar la parte cultural y promover el talento de los artistas.

Baja California Sur has become a powerful inspiration for Sonia who, like many other artists, has made the peninsula her muse on several occasions. Through AMA Saving the Oceans and AMA Design by Sonia Falcone, the artist continues to work hard to contribute to different areas of the community, especially the Down Syndrome population in Los Cabos. Her wish is to contribute a space where people with Down Syndrome can develop their abilities through art, education, and love. AMA alludes to the verb "to love" (in Spanish). The actual definition is Amigos de las Aguas y los Mares (Friends of the Waters and the Seas). In addition to contributing to the conservation of the oceans, AMA works to promote cultural aspects and the talent of the artists.

acacionar o vivir en Los Cabos brinda inagotable dinamismo. Aunque el atractivo principal es la playa y las actividades relacionadas con el mar como la pesca, visitar el arco o simplemente disfrutar la vista, podemos encontrar otras como jugar golf, relajarte en spas o ir de compras. Sin embargo, para familiarizarnos con la cultura y la historia de México, particularmente de San José del Cabo, es imprescindible visitar el Centro Histórico. Esta es una de mis actividades favoritas y además un encuentro obligado por su belleza arquitectónica y la oferta artística, comercial y gastronómica.

Although the main attraction is the beach and activities related to the sea such as fishing, visiting the arch or simply enjoying the view, we can find others such as playing golf, enjoying the spas, and shopping. However, to get acquainted with the culture and the history of Mexico and particularly of San Jose del Cabo, visiting the historic center is a must. This is one of my favorite activities and a must-see for its architectural beauty and the artistic, commercial, and gastronomic offerings.
El punto más importante del Centro Histórico es la plaza principal, conocida como la Plaza Teniente Antonio Mijares, rodeada por espacios comerciales, oficinas gubernamentales y situada frente a la iglesia de San José del Cabo, que tiene su origen en la época misional.
The most important part of the historic center is the main square, known in San Jose del Cabo as Plaza Teniente Antonio Mijares. The square is surrounded by commercial spaces and government offices and located in front of the San Jose del Cabo Mission.
Esta mezcla permite que tanto locales como visitantes se reúnan y se apropien de este espacio público. Los fines de semana al atardecer puedes apreciar familias tomando helado mientras los niños corren y juegan en la plaza. También puedes comprar dulces y antojitos mexicanos como los famosos Tamales Doña Nina, que se disfrutan todos los días a partir de las 5 de la tarde. Si aún no los has probado, son una masa sazonada de maíz cocida al vapor, rellenos de guisos mexicanos tradicionales como pollo con mole o salsa verde con puerco, entre otras opciones vegetarianas y hasta dulces, como los tamales rellenos de piña.
This mix of activities attracts both locals and visitors who meet and congregate in the public space. At sunset on weekends, you can see families having an ice cream while the children run and play in the square. You can enjoy Mexican sweets and snacks, such as the famous Tamales Doña Nina, every day after five o’clock. If you have yet to try them, they are a seasoned steamed corn dough, filled with traditional Mexican mixtures such as chicken with mole or green sauce with pork. Additional specialties include vegetarian options and even sweets, such as tamales stuffed with pineapple.

Right in front of the church, you will find the name of San Jose del Cabo in the three-dimensional letters that have become a tradition in all the cities of our country. Durante los días hábiles, puedes tomarte un café en alguno de los restaurantes alrededor de la plaza o una bebida en alguna de las terraza y solo contemplar la cotidianidad: estudiantes entrando y saliendo de las escuelas, adultos que asisten para realizar trámites en algún banco u oficina de gobierno, el comercio alrededor en todo su esplendor, y si tienes suerte, ver algún festival escolar en el anfiteatro o actividades para los adultos mayores como clases de baile o talleres de manualidades.
On business days, you can have a coffee under an umbrella in one of the restaurants around the square or a beverage on one of the terraces. They are perfect locations for watching the daily life in a traditional city in Mexico. You can see students going in and out of schools, adults doing business in banks or government offices, merchants selling drinks or ice cream to cool off before the imposing midday sun and, if you are lucky, you could enjoy a school festival in the amphitheater or activities for older adults such as dance classes and craft workshops.
Los atardeceres son uno de los momentos que más disfruto en el Centro Histórico observando al sol despidiéndose detrás de la iglesia, desde la terraza de El Retro o Shooters, mientras el cielo cambia de colores y ofreciendo un espectáculo diferente todos los días. ¡No hay 2 atardeceres iguales en San José!

Sunsets are one of the moments that I enjoy the most in downtown San Jose. Bidding the sun farewell as it sinks behind the Mission while the sky changes colors and I sip a beverage on the terrace of El Retro or Shooters is like watching a different show every day of the week. No sunsets are the same in San Jose!

Los martes y jueves por la tarde son los mejores días para explorar el centro con un enfoque artístico. Las calles se cierran a los vehículos, por lo que además de las banquetas, tienes la zona vehicular para desplazarte entre muestras gastronómicas de los restaurantes, exposiciones de arte de las galerías y artistas urbanos quienes hacen el recorrido muy placentero. Mientras las calles se llenan de vida, música y color, la plaza se convierte en un impresionante taller artístico donde los artistas se reúnen para exponer sus habilidades y mostrarnos como crean sus obras. Acercarte a ellos si tienes curiosidad sobre su obra, su fuente de inspiración y seguramente hasta alguna anécdota. No hay ningún pretexto válido para no visitar el Centro Histórico de San José del Cabo. Estoy seguro de que encontrarás más de una actividad que te encantará.

Tuesday and Thursday afternoons are the best days to explore the cultural arts in the town center. The roads are closed to motorized vehicles, so you have the entire street to casually walk to the next delicious offering by one of the restaurants. Exhibits at the many art galleries feature urban artists that will make your stroll a very pleasant adventure. While the streets are filled with life, music and color, the square becomes an impressive artistic workshop where local artists meet to exhibit their skills and demonstrate how they create their work. If curious, you can approach them and inquire about their source of inspiration and even get a few pointers if you want to paint something at home.
There is no valid excuse for not visiting the historic center of San Jose del Cabo on your next visit. I am sure you will find more than one activity that you will love.

Over the past 10 years, the Los Cabos International Film Festival has opened new doors beyond tourism through the seventh art. Generations have grown up hand in hand with emotions and sensations that transcend the screen. "We are happy to celebrate an anniversary in which so many people have joined us. We feel grateful to have different work teams, sponsors and institutions as allies and who have supported us year after year," said Alejandra Paulín, executive director of the Los Cabos International Film Festival. The passion and love of the directors and the public has been the key to overcoming any adversity. It has made it possible for the festival to evolve over the years, reinventing itself.
“Tenemos un equipo que le ha puesto el corazón al festival. Eso nos mantiene con una mirada fresca y con ojos nuevos, con aportaciones espontáneas”, Maru Garzón, directora artística del Festival Internacional de Cine de Los Cabos.

Hubo una respuesta positiva al formato digital del Festival Internacional de Cine de Los Cabos el año pasado. El festival tuvo presencia en casi todo el mundo. Se espera que la edición 2021, si las condiciones lo permiten, adopte un formato híbrido, ya que parece que lo digital llegó para quedarse.

Ahora este medio se ha vuelto en un recurso importante para plasmar situaciones de nuestra realidad y el Festival Internacional de Cine de Los Cabos no ha sido la excepción. Desde sus inicios, ha buscado apoyar proyectos mexicanos a través del Fondo Fílmico Gabriel Figueroa. “La estructura del Fondo Fílmico Gabriel Figueroa se enfoca en proyectos que están iniciando, que están en la etapa de desarrollo o también, que estén buscando financiamiento, guion, o pasar a la etapa de producción. Asimismo, participan algunos proyectos terminados, a los que les falta cerrar con postproducción”, nos comparte Francisco. El proceso de evaluación se ha ido modificando y perfeccionando con el paso del tiempo. Se ha establecido un nivel de confianza entre el fondo y el festival para evaluar las producciones recibidas durante el periodo de convocatorias, que suelen alcanzar más de 100 filmes por año. El Fondo Fílmico Gabriel Figueroa ayuda a encaminar las cintas hacia los ojos de los espectadores y, al mismo tiempo, otorga a los creadores un valor agregado para sus proyectos, así como la oportunidad de compartir su talento con el público y aportar una mirada renovada sobre sus historias en la gran pantalla.

Today, the medium has become an important resource for capturing our reality. The Los Cabos International Film Festival has been no exception. From the beginning, the festival has sought to support Mexican projects through the Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund. "The structure of the fund focuses on projects that are beginning or are in the developmental stage or those that are looking for financing, script, or to move on to the production stage. Some finished projects also participate, those that have yet to finish postproduction," Francisco shared with us. The evaluation process has been modified and perfected over time. A level of trust has been established between the fund and the Los Cabos International Film Festival for evaluating the productions received during the call period, which usually amounts to more than 100 films per year. The fund helps to direct films to the eyes of the moviegoers and, at the same time, give the creators added value for their projects, as well as the opportunity to share their talent with the public and provide another look at their stories on the big screen.

It offers creators and producers the opportunity to develop their projects through the design of specific spaces and activities for each of their needs. What projects can participate? Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund Categories Film in Development: feature film projects produced or coproduced by Mexico with any other country in the world. Projects must indicate the category in which they are participating:
• Cine en Desarrollo: proyectos de largometraje producidos o coproducidos por México con cualquier otro país. Los proyectos inscritos deberán indicar en qué categoría participan:
- Projects for the director's first or second feature film.
• Proyectos para la primera o segunda película del director(a).
- Work in Progress: feature films produced or co-produced by Mexico in the editing or post-production stage.

En el 2013 el teatro al aire libre del Pabellón Cultural de la República recibió a la agrupación mexicana Café Tacuba, que presentó dos conciertos en el segundo día de actividades. Sin duda, uno de los momentos más emblemáticos. También se celebró la primera edición del Fondo Fílmico Gabriel Figueroa, que hasta el momento continúa su labor por apoyar al cine mexicano y su vinculación con las cinematografías de Estados Unidos y Canadá.
In 2013, the open-air theater of the Pabellon Cultural de la Republica hosted the Mexican band Cafe Tacuba who performed two concerts on the second day of activities. It was, undoubtedly, one of the most iconic moments. The first edition of the Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund was also held. To this day, the fund continues to support Mexican cinema and links with productions in the United States and Canada.

En esta edición también nace Los Cabos Goes to Cannes, que en alianza con el Festival de Cine de Cannes busca impulsar proyectos en desarrollo para dar continuidad a su producción. También en el 2017 el Festival sumó esfuerzos con la organización civil de Los Cabos, Red Autismo, con quien se organizó una subasta de arte cuyos fondos fueron entregados en su totalidad para apoyar a familias de niños que viven con este trastorno; como parte de esta alianza se exhibió una función especial de la película animada, El Ángel en el Reloj.
Also in 2017, the festival joined forces with the Los Cabos civil organization, Red Autismo. An art auction was organized with all funds donated to families of children living with the autism disorder. A special screening of the animated film, The Angel in the Clock, was shown as part of the alliance.

De igual manera, en el 2018 el premio La Ballena, creada por el artista plástico mexicano, El Nacho, hace su primera aparición en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Los Cabos. Y, por primera vez, se llevan a cabo, gracias al apoyo de Casa Dorada, dos funciones especiales de cine en la playa.

Likewise, the La Ballena award was created in 2018 by Mexican artist El Nacho and made its first appearance at the Los Cabos International Film Festival. Este 2021 celebrará su décima edición del 10 al 17 de noviembre en una versión híbrida que contempla actividades en línea y funciones presenciales en Los Cabos y otras ciudades de la República Mexicana. Será un año que le permitirá reafirmar su identidad y compromiso de exhibir lo mejor del cine de vanguardia producido en México, Estados Unidos y Canadá; con encuentros que fomenten el diálogo en torno a temas que resultan fundamentales.
This year, Los Cabos International Film Festival celebrates the first decade of life. Los misterios que rodean al mar son muchos, pero comencemos recordando que el Golfo de California fue bautizado como Acuario del Mundo por el explorador, investigador y biólogo marino Jacques Cousteau, este golfo contiene el 40% de las especies marinas que se encuentran en el planeta. Si busca fantásticas criaturas marinas, este es el lugar ideal. Quizás uno de los más interesantes es el pez Mulier (mujer) que fue descubierto por Ignacio Tirsh en 1764. El padre Victoriano Arnés también pescó un pez Mulier y Miguel del Barco lo transcribió con la figura de una mujer de cintura para arriba y un pez común de la mitad hacia abajo. Un mar lleno de misterios, en registros recientes del año 2016 se anotó una mantarraya gigante de 8 metros. Otros misterios incluyen el pez remo, el pez luna, y todos cantándole al desierto. Un recurso natural o cultural es en sí mismo un atractivo cuando las personas están interesadas y dispuestas a disfrutarlo. Aquí una lista: 1. The mysteries surrounding the sea are many, but let's start by remembering that the Gulf of California was christened the Aquarium of the World by the explorer, researcher and marine biologist Jacques Cousteau. The gulf contains 40 percent of the marine species found on the planet. If you’re looking for fantastic marine creatures, this is the ideal place. Perhaps one of the most interesting is the Mulier (woman) Fish that was discovered by Ignacio Tirsh in 1764. Father Victoriano Arnés also caught a Mulier Fish and Miguel del Barco transcribed it as having the figure of a woman from the waist up and a common fish from the middle down. Recent records include a giant stingray in 2016 that measured more than 25 feet. Other mysteries include the oarfish and the sunfish, all of them singing to the desert. El misterio elusivo del Trópico The Elusive Mystery of the Tropic Ramón Ojeda Mestre Cuando estás cerca de un océano, el otoño nos regala los colores más misteriosos del año. Todos los sitios que están cerca de mar son hermosos. Pero no todos son tan afortunados, como Baja California Sur, de tener la línea del Trópico de Cáncer ciñéndole el pecho y el corazón. De los pocos países del mundo que cruza el Trópico de Cáncer, México tuvo la suerte de que fuera precisamente en nuestra península donde trazará su solsticial filacterio. Así, exactamente en Todos Santos y también en el Kilómetro 82 de la carretera que va hacia La Ribera, hacia El Triunfo y hacia La Paz por la vía larga en una latitud de 23° 27’ del Ecuador. When you are so close to the ocean, the fall provides the most mysterious colors of the year. All the places near of the sea are beautiful. But not all are as fortunate as Baja California Sur to have the Tropic of Cancer around their chests and hearts. Of the few countries in the world crossed by the Tropic of Cancer, Mexico was fortunate that it was precisely on our peninsula the solstice would be traced. So, it lies exactly in Todos Santos and at Kilometer 82 of the road that goes to La Ribera, to El Triunfo and to La Paz at a latitude of 23° 27' from the Equator.

El hecho concreto es que el Trópico de Cáncer para Baja California Sur es una bendición astronómica, que atrae tanto ballenas como aves maravillosas y que nos deja una variedad de frutas incomparables como la pitahaya, cuya flor se plasma en el vestido típico de esta tierra/mar/cielo. Pasando El Triunfo llegas a San Antonio que ofrece colores impresionantes flores, frutos, vegetación suelos y cielos. Cuando Alexander Von Humboldt conoció la Piedra del Sol o Calendario Azteca no solo notó que mostraba el orden de los días y los meses (por series periódicas), sino que advirtió el modo como podían coincidir el calendario ritual y el solar (el año trópico, que se determina por el movimiento aparente del sol entre los dos trópicos: el de Cáncer, en el hemisferio norte y el de Capricornio, en el hemisferio sur). Humboldt comprende que el pueblo nahua necesita medir con rigor el movimiento del sol para así establecer el tiempo de la siembra y la cosecha. Por esto, concluye que el calendario mexicano era el de un pueblo agrícola, como lo fue también el egipcio.
What defines the ecology and even the spirit of the people of Southern California, permanent or transitory as well as its wonderful autumns and delicious winters, is precisely the location of the Tropic of Cancer. Back in time, memories from many years. The concrete fact is that the Tropic of Cancer for Baja California Sur is an astronomical blessing. Humboldt understood that the Nahua people rigorously measured the movement of the sun, to establish the times of sowing and harvesting. Humboldt dijo, con toda razón, que los pueblos nómadas -como los Californios diversos- medían el tiempo por las lunaciones, mientras que los pueblos agrícolas se regían de acuerdo con el movimiento aparente del sol: los nahuas eran sedentarios y medían el tiempo por el sol y el cambio de las estaciones. Se nos olvida que nos volvimos un pueblo agrícola aparte de pescador. Acá, en Todos Santos, lo mismo que en San José del Cabo se cultivaba caña de azúcar y en La Ribera florecía una agricultura variada con buenas cosechas de camote, sandía, cebolla, calabazas, mangos, naranjas, limones, y mucha pastura para el ganado.
Humboldt rightly said that nomadic peoples (such as the various Californios) measured time by the Lunar movements, while agricultural peoples were governed according to the apparent movement of the Sun. The Nahua were sedentary and measured time by the Sun and the changing of the seasons. We forget that we became an agricultural people as well as fishermen. As proof, in Todos Santos, as in San Jose del Cabo, sugar cane was grown and, in La Ribera, a varied agriculture flourished with good crops of sweet potato, watermelon, onion, pumpkins, mangoes, oranges, lemons, and plenty of pasture for cattle.

Estrella Navarro Tuvimos la oportunidad en esta edición de conocer a Estrella Navarro, bióloga marina, modelo y deportista de buceo libre. Estrella Navarro ha batido 27 récords de buceo libre en México y eso la ha coronado como la subcampeona mundial en apnea, por su capacidad de contener la respiración.
Creo que mi mayor desafío es ir más allá de mis capacidades. El buceo libre es una forma de conectarme conmigo mismo, de meditar. Es una forma de eliminar los límites y reescribirlos.

Como resultado, gran parte de su corazón pertenece al misterio de las profundidades marinas. Nacida en La Paz, Baja California Sur, Estrella ostenta el récord máximo en esta disciplina en América Latina. Ha logrado permanecer bajo el agua durante más de seis minutos. Aunque ha visitado numerosos lugares alrededor del mundo durante su carrera, para ella no hay mejor lugar que La Paz. Ella describe la ciudad como un paraíso en tierra y mar. Por sus estudios en biología marina conoció la vida bajo el agua en el ámbito científico. El buceo libre le ha permitido una interacción más humana y fraternal con este ecosistema.
Más que un tema de ambientalismo o activismo, es simplemente conciencia basada en la experiencia. Tengo el conocimiento por lo que estudié y la práctica de interactuar con la vida marina por el deporte que practico. Esta pasión la ha llevado a explorar otras facetas, ha realizado documentales como “Tiburón Ballena de La Paz” para compartir el amor por el océano y motivar a las personas a cuidar de él. Además de su familia, que han sido un gran apoyo, la naturaleza se ha convertido en una fuerte motivación para Estrella quien constantemente practica la contemplación.
Ver un ave, una flor o la belleza del cielo me hace pensar en los cálculos matemáticos necesarios para lograr esa perfección. Si voy por la vida viendo esos detalles, me lleno de inspiración y felicidad.

Although she has visited numerous places around the world during her career, for her, there is no better place than La Paz. She describes the city as a paradise on land and sea. Through her studies in marine biology, Estrella learned about the science of life underwater. Free diving has allowed her a more human and fraternal interaction with this ecosystem.
More than an issue of environmentalism or activism, it is simply awareness based on experience. I have the knowledge because of what I studied and the practice of interacting with marine life because of the sport I do. This passion has led her to explore other facets of marine life. She has made documentaries such as "Whale Shark of La Paz" that shares her love for the ocean and motivates people to take care of it. In addition to her family, who have been very supportive, nature has become a strong motivation for athletes, like Estrella, who constantly practice contemplation.
Seeing a bird, a flower or the beauty of the sky makes me think of the mathematical calculations needed to achieve that perfection. If I go through life seeing those details, I am filled with inspiration and happiness.

E
l Sargento con su anexo La Ventana, es el peculiar nombre que se dio a estos dos ejidos por resolución presidencial el 25 de agosto de 1949. Hace mucho tiempo, las familias de este pequeño poblado trabajaban en el mar en las actividades de pesca y buceo para extracción de perlas. Las perlas eran el principal comercio porque se trataba de una zona rica en ostras. Lo que poca gente conoce de este lugar es que, en algún momento de su historia, La Ventana se convertiría en el remitente de la leyenda de “The Great Lemon”, la ostentosa perla que orgullosamente posa sobre la corona británica de la reina Isabel II. Durante un reportaje acerca de Baja California Sur en 1972, National Geographic descubrió a un personaje, a Salomé León Lucero, de 79 años, quien era buzo perlero oriundo de La Ventana. Entre sus hazañas, contó que logró salir con vida de un encuentro cara a cara con un tiburón al defenderse hábilmente con su canasta de ostras.

a Ventana is a small suburb of El Sargento. The name is curious because La Ventana (The Window) was a commune. On August 25, 1949, the president at the time declared that La Ventana was part of El Sargento and the two were to be considered one community. A long time ago, the families of this small town worked the sea in the fishing and pearl diving businesses. Pearls were the main trade because this was an area rich in oysters. Something people don’t know about this place is that, at some point in time, this community would become the originator of the legend of "The Great Lemon," the royal pearl that proudly sits on the British crown of Queen Elizabeth II. During a 1972 article on Baja California Sur, National Geographic set its sights on Salomé León Lucero, 79 years old, who was a pearl diver from La Ventana. During his exploits, he said that he managed to get out alive from a face-to-face encounter with a shark by skillfully defending himself with his basket of oysters.

Salome also told National Geographic that in a lifetime of extracting pearls, he found a big pearl with green highlights. Probably the famous pearl in the Queen’s crown!
Salomé trabajaba con Ruffo Hermanos, quienes eran comerciantes de abarrotes, licores, cerveza, tela, entre otras mercancías. Cuenta la leyenda que la perla fue entregada a los empresarios que se encontraban en ese ejido durante esa época y fue escalando de persona en persona, hasta situarse en la corona. Quizá ellos se convirtieron en el medio para que este tesoro paceño llegara a San Francisco, California, USA, como obsequio al embajador del Reino Unido.
Salome worked with Hermanos Ruffo. They were merchants of groceries, liquors, beer, and cloth, as well as other merchandise. The story goes that the pearl was given to businessmen who were part of the commune during the time, and it moved up the ladder, from person to person, until it was placed in the crown. The men became the means for this La Paz treasure to arrive in San Francisco, California, USA, as a gift to the ambassador of the United Kingdom.

Acerca del autor
El profesor Francisco Holmos Montaño, nació en Santa Catarina, comunidad del Municipio de Los Cabos. Fue titulado por la Escuela Normal Urbana Profesor Domingo Carballo Félix y cuenta con una licenciatura en Ciencias Sociales de la Escuela Normal Superior por el Estado de Baja California Sur. Durante su trayectoria se ha dedicado a la docencia y dirección enfocada en asignaturas de carácter histórico-culturales.

About the author
Professor Francisco Holmos Montaño was born in Santa Catarina, a community in the municipality of Los Cabos. He graduated from the Escuela Normal Urbana Profesor Domingo Carballo Felix and has a degree in Social Sciences from the Escuela Normal Superior for the State of Baja California Sur. He has dedicated his career to teaching subjects of a historical-cultural nature.

Since you can't think of autumn without the typical orange pumpkins, we have decided to present a recipe from Ciudad Constitucion that makes the most of this delicious fruit. Yum!

Los Barriles Ubicado a 111 kilómetros al sur de La Paz, Los Barriles es el escenario ideal para el turismo de aventura. Aquí, los visitantes pueden practicar actividades como kitesurfing y snorkel, así como realizar recorridos en vehículos todo terreno y bicicletas de montaña. Otra de las atracciones turísticas del lugar es la pesca deportiva, al ser una zona con abundancia de marlín, dorado y atún, entre otros. A este hermoso lugar hay que dedicarle, al menos, un día entero y dejarse llevar por sus elementos naturales sumamente cautivantes.
Isla Espíritu Santo La Isla Espíritu Santo, es Patrimonio Natural Mundial de la Humanidad de la UNESCO desde 2005 y Parque Nacional desde 2007. En ella habitan bellezas ecosistémicas inimaginables al ser escenario del encuentro entre el mar y el desierto. Los visitantes pueden recorrer sus playas vírgenes y luego realizar actividades como stand up paddleboarding, kayak o buceo para recorrer arrecifes naturales o visitar las embarcaciones hundidas que se encuentran a su alrededor. Es un lugar digno de recorrer a pie, así que el senderismo también es una de las actividades favoritas de sus visitantes. Además, la Isla Espíritu Santo es hogar de la colonia reproductiva de lobos marinos más grande del Mar de Cortés, en la cual es posible interactuar con ellos por medio de actividades como snorkel o buceo. World Amateur Golfers Championship en Puerta Cortés
Además de disfrutar un día por la marina del Pueblito Marinero, Puerta Cortés se convirtió en la sede de un emocionante partido de golf, los jugadores se dieron cita en el campo de golf El Cortés para ser parte de World Amateur Golfers Championship durante su Gira México.

Este campo posee 18 hoyos con vistas al Mar de Cortés; fue diseñado pensando tanto en jugadores novatos como experimentados y es el único de Gary Player en México, leyenda de este deporte, quien estuvo presente durante su inauguración.
Este año, el campo de golf El Cortés fue elegido para celebrar la final nacional de este torneo, donde se seleccionarían a los ganadores para representar a México en la final internacional. Los ganadores fueron: Miguel Senderos, en la primera categoría (0 -5.4 índice), Juan Manuel Ortega en la segunda (5.5 – 10.4), Ricardo Castañeda en la tercera (10.5 – 15.4), David Carrillo en la cuarta (16.5 – 20.4) y finalmente Hans Hutterer, en la quinta (20.5 – 25.4), quienes se coronaron como futuros representantes de México en la final mundial WAGC que esperan conmemorar el próximo año.

omo lo mencionan varios historiadores, la península de Baja California fue una tierra aislada y escasamente habitada. La población sudcaliforniana incrementó el número de residentes de acuerdo con el espacio, el tiempo, ciertos puntos de historia específicos y la evolución continua de las clases sociales.

La ciudad de La Paz en Baja California Sur es donde inició este tema de mi interés. Mientras examinaba la página del archivo histórico Pablo L. Martínez, me topé con varias fotografías que captaron mi atención. Sin que me diera cuenta, las estaba analizando como lo hacía en la universidad, en clases de métodos y técnicas de investigación, historia de los repositorios, archivos y bibliotecas, multiplicidad de fuentes para la historia, historia del arte, introducción a la investigación de la historia del arte, fueron las clases donde aprendí a desarrollar la práctica de la investigación y el sentido de cuestionar.
The city of La Paz, Baja California Sur is where this topic of interest began. While examining the page of Pablo L. Martinez historical archive, I came across several photographs that caught my attention. Without realizing it, I was analyzing them as I used to do in my university years, in classes on research methods and techniques, history of repositories, archives and libraries, multiplicity of sources for history, art history, introduction to art history research, the classes where I learned to develop the practice of researching and the sense of questioning.
Revisé varios retratos de mujeres de distintas edades, que van desde año 1900 al 2009, sin embargo, decidí enfocarme en los años de 1905 a 1913 porque me di cuenta de que en ese tiempo hay más fotografías de mujeres originarias de La Paz. Examiné su atuendo, pose y escenografía; también las comparé con otras fotos que encontré con vestimenta más sencilla, aunque —a ratos— fue algo difícil de notar por el deterioro de la imagen y la similitud de prendas. Me interesó indagar sobre estas féminas de élite paceña.
Revising several portraits of women with different ages, ranging from 1900 to 2009, however, I only focused on the years from1905 to 1913 because I realized that at that time there are more photographs of women from La Paz. I examined their attire, pose and scenography; I also compared them with other photos I found with simpler clothing, although -at times-it was difficult notice due to the deterioration of the image and the similarity of the clothes. I was interested in finding out more about these elite women from La Paz.
Durante el gobierno de Porfirio Díaz, la ciudad capital de Baja California Sur fue La Paz. Este presidente tenía una admiración por Francia debido a que era la capital cultural del mundo. Su fascinación por el estilo sofisticado afrancesado se hizo presente en el urbanismo de algunos lugares de México, aunque hay opiniones de historiadores donde aseveran que debido a las dificultades políticas y económicas por las que atravesó entonces el México independiente, la influencia francesa no se hace sentir de lleno sino hasta el Porfiriato.
During the government of Porfirio Díaz, the capital city of Baja California Sur was La Paz. This president had an admiration for France due to this place was considered the capital of the world. His fascination for the sophisticated French-style was evident in the urbanism of some places in Mexico. Although, there are some historian opinions affirming that due to the political and economic difficulties that independent Mexico went through at that time, the French influence was not fully felt until the Porfiriato.

Sin entrar en demasiados detalles sobre los edificios, planeación y organización; Baja California Sur se ha destacado por su distancia geográfica. En épocas pasadas, el vínculo era más complicado con el interior del país, pero no imposible, gracias a los distintos métodos de comunicación terrestre y marítima. La vida cultural de esta península se adquiere durante el Porfiriato (1876 – 1911) con gran influencia francesa presente en las construcciones, la moda e incluso la cultura gastronómica. Sobre la moda. Las imágenes que analicé son de mujeres fotografiadas entre 1905 y 1913, son de clase alta, lo noté en su vestimenta, accesorios y zapatos. Los elegantes tejidos eran exclusivos de las mujeres adineradas, el peinado junto con el tocado y algunos sombreros son características paceñas de la alta sociedad. Así que, complementando el escaneo, estas damas eran inscritas en la escuela para señoritas de la Sra. Encarnación A. Cervantes, donde se les impartía: lectura, escritura, aritmética, gramática, música, catecismo histórico, reglas de urbanidad y costura, todo para una mujer dedicada al hogar. Una vez casada ponía en práctica lo aprendido en clase, hacerse cargo de administrar el dinero y era quien veía cómo sostener el hogar con servidumbre, comida, telas, joyas, costear un piano y animales de cría.

Once married, she put into practiced what she had learnt in classes by taking charge of managing the money and she was the one who saw how to support the household with servants, food, fabrics, jewelry, the cost of a piano and animals breeding.

La costumbre era pasear del brazo de su esposo por el Jardín Velasco, principal escenario de las fiestas públicas, sin importar los contrastes sociales. Los jueves y domingos eran días de eventos musicales, serenatas, kermeses, carnavales y mítines políticos. En el año de 1907 era tradición ver los fuegos artificiales de la fiesta del 16 de Septiembre, se instalaban puestos de cantina, rifas, banco, restaurantes y cervecerías atendidos por señoritas de sociedad.

On this occasion, we directed our adventure to a delegation situated a little more than 25 miles from the city of La Paz. Our accomplice in the mission was Adolfo de la Peña Aramburo, delegate of this small and quiet community surrounded by mountains and serenity that was founded around 1756.

Consciente de la existencia de oro y plata en el área, Manuel de Ocio fundó el Real de Minas de Santa Ana, poblado que dio origen a San Antonio y El Triunfo. Durante el tiempo de auge en el siglo XVIII se extrajeron importantes cantidades de oro y plata y, aunque la actividad minera cesó al grito de la Revolución Mexicana en 1910, aún quedan los vestigios de esta actividad en la comunidad. Se cree que estos minerales prevalecen hasta la actualidad.
Aware of the existence of gold and silver in the area, Manuel de Ocio founded Real de Minas de Santa Ana, a settlement that eventually became San Antonio and El Triunfo. During boom times, from the 18th to 19th centuries, significant amounts of gold and silver were extracted and, although mining activity ceased at the outcry of the Mexican Revolution in 1910, vestiges of this activity still remain in the community where it is believed these precious metals exist to this day.

Liga MAC es una de las primeras asociaciones civiles sin fines de lucro en Los Cabos. Fue fundada en 1997. Su enfoque actual es apoyar y motivar a jóvenes en el ámbito de la educación, pues, en palabras de Elva Haro, directora ejecutiva de la asociación: “La clave es la educación de las personas. Cuando se tiene una formación más amplia, todo alrededor cambia”.
Liga MAC was one of the first non-profit organizations in Los Cabos. It was founded in 1997. Its current focus is to support and motivate young people in the field of education. In the words of the executive director, Elva Haro, "The key is the education of the people. When you have broader education, everything around you will change.”

Una de sus grandes inspiraciones es la voluntad de mejorar, tener una buena actitud e iniciar su día de manera optimista, con música alegre y lo más importante: sus ganas de seguir aprendiendo. “Mi consejo para los jóvenes es que se rodeen de personas que les ayuden a crecer y que les aporten conocimiento.” José Luis nos compartió que se siente feliz de tener la oportunidad de rodearse de personas con visión emprendedora y que espera tener su propia empresa en el futuro. También agradeció a Liga MAC por el apoyo y la confianza durante sus estudios universitarios.

Los clubes, proyectos y actividades que Liga MAC organiza para contribuir a la formación de sus estudiantes fue lo que despertó su interés. Su familia y sus amigos son su gran motivación, Sebastián espera apoyarlos en el futuro. “Me inspira la idea de ser una mejor persona y tengo la idea de que cuando sea grande pueda ayudar a mis papás para darles una mejor calidad de vida.” Sebastián es un amante de la ciencia y la tecnología. No es de extrañar que quiera estudiar Ingeniería de Sistemas en el futuro.

EN LIGA MAC Elva Haro nos comparte que uno de los requisitos más importantes para la selección de los alumnos son sus familias, porque es un compromiso donde tienen que involucrarse tanto padres como hijos. Las familias deben estar conscientes del compromiso que adquieren, el valor de la educación y que deseen crecer juntos. “José Luis y Sebastián representan fielmente el espíritu de Liga MAC. Ambos son estudiantes que pertenecen a familias vulnerables en términos de ingresos en San José del Cabo, pero son apasionados del aprendizaje, quieren educarse para salir adelante y tener una mejor calidad de vida”. Además de donar, también puedes participar como embajador y es una buena manera de brindar apoyo. Súmate de manera voluntaria, compartiendo tus conocimientos con los estudiantes e incluso difundiendo su contenido en redes sociales. No importa el tamaño de tus acciones, sino el deseo de incorporarse en la tarea de ayudar a los demás.
