On this occasion, we traveled to the municipality of Mulegé which offers a diversity of gastronomic, historical, anecdotal, and visual options that translate into unique and wonderful life experiences such as afternoons on the beaches of Punta Arena, Santispac, El Coyote, La Escondida. or Las Huertitas, just to mention a few beaches located in Bahía Concepción, between Sierra El Coyote and Sierra Los Gavilanes, a true paradise for adventure tourism.

El día comienza con el tradicional café de Talega - elaborado en filtro de tela, una usanza del ranchero sudcaliforniano unos talayotes cocidos y unos burritos de mantarraya con salsa de chile seco. Después, los deportes y actividades al aire libre suceden en un ambiente de perfecta tranquilidad que satisface las necesidades de cualquier aficionado a la aventura. Recetas a base de abulón, almeja, carne de puerco asado con ajo morado y dátil, son solo algunas de los deliciosos platillos regionales que podrás degustar durante las excursiones. De las noches podríamos narrar capítulos interminables ya que el bajo volumen de luz proporciona tiempos de contemplación, con luna llena o aún en su ausencia, es una maravilla admirar estrellas y constelaciones como en pocos lugares. La historia del municipio de Mulegé es un viaje al pasado, se remonta varios milenios a través de los diversos sitios de pinturas rupestres, quizá las más conocidas son las de la Sierra de San Francisco, ubicadas en el corazón de la Reserva de la Biosfera del Vizcaíno cerca del Valle de Santa Martha. La expedición es de varios días para apreciar su magnificencia.

The day begins with the traditional Talega coffee, brewed in an old-style cloth filter as ranchers from Baja California Sur have been doing for a long time, some steamed wild squash known as talayotes, and some manta in dried chili sauce burritos. Later on, sports and outdoor activities are enjoyed in a tranquil environment that meets the needs of every aficionado. While exploring this region you can enjoy some of their local culinary delights like abalone, clams and roasted pork with purple garlic and dates. We could talk of the nights for endless chapters since the lack of artificial light allows for contemplative experiences, on a full moon or when its absence offers opportunities for star and constellation gazing as only few places can offer. The history of Mulegé is a journey into the past that goes back several millennia through various cave painting sites, where perhaps the best known are those of Sierra de San Francisco, in the heart of the Vizcaino biosphere reserve, near Valle de Santa Martha, which is an expedition that takes several days to appreciate its greatness and beauty.

I would like to recommend a visit to the Santa Rosalía de Mulegé Mission, which is a historic site and part of Jesuit missionary history. Heroica Mulegé also has a prominent place in contemporary history. It was there that 175 years ago the defense of the peninsula took place, resulting in the victory of the Mexican army under the command of Captain Pineda against the North American army. There you can also admire the Cerro del Sombrerito and its famous lighthouse... a postcard worthy sight. In Santa Rosalía there are several houses that have survived since the beginning of the last century and where Gustave Eiffel is said to have designed the metal structure of the Santa Barbara Church, which was brough to Baja California Sur in the heyday of the El Boleo mining company. The road trip, from Los Cabos to Mulegé, is simply spectacular. A few miles before reaching Loreto, the Gulf of California can be seen through the mountains, and past Loreto the highway follows the coast for a spectacular stretch that provides incredible vistas of Bahía Concepcion. Mulegé, is one of the five municipalities in Baja California Sur, it is the largest municipality in the state and even in the country, and a natural wonder from coast to coast that you once you visit it for the first time will make you yearn to return to it many times.

Me gustaría recomendar la visita a la Misión de Santa Rosalía de Mulegé, es un sitio que forma parte de la historia jesuita. Así también hay que darle un lugar destacado en la historia más contemporánea al poblado de Heroica Mulegé. Fue allí donde hace 175 años se llevó a cabo la defensa de la península, resultando victorioso el ejército mexicano al mando del Capitán Pineda quien lideró el enfrentamiento contra el ejército norteamericano. Ahí mismo se puede visitar el Cerro del Sombrerito y su famoso faro… un espectáculo digno de postal. En Santa Rosalía hay varias construcciones que han conservado la arquitectura afrancesada de principio del siglo pasado, y donde a Gustave Eiffel se le atribuye el diseño de la estructura metálica de la iglesia de Santa Bárbara, traída a Baja California Sur en la época del auge minero de la Compañía El Boleo. El viaje por carretera es sencillamente espectacular. Viajando de sur a norte, desde Los Cabos hacía Mulegé, unos kilómetros antes de llegar a Loreto, entre las montañas se empieza a vislumbrar el Golfo de California, y después de Loreto, la carretera se vuelve costera por un tramo que permite ver Bahía Concepción. Mulegé, es uno de los cinco municipios en Baja California Sur, es el municipio más grande del Estado e inclusive el más grande del país, es una maravilla natural de costa a costa a la que querrá venir una y muchas veces más.

"To find balance you must keep your structure safe, set aside time for yourself, to do something that gives you peace and then; you can help others."

Las costas de Los Cabos han sido el hechizo que atrapa a surfistas que atraídos por el reto de conquistar las olas terminan seducidos por este paraíso. Esto es exactamente lo que le sucedió a Lucía Hatfield, abogada, egresada de Juris Doctor en Univeristy of Southern California y actual vicepresidente de DelMar Development, quien se enamoró del encanto mexicano desde 1984.

The shores of Los Cabos have put a spell that captures surfers who, drawn by the challenge of conquering the waves, end up seduced by this paradise. This is exactly what happened to Lucía Hatfield, a Juris Doctor graduate from the University of Southern California and current vice president of DelMar Development, who fell in love with Mexico’s charm in 1984.

“En Baja California Sur tenemos luz, agua, tierra, diferentes tipos de vida marina. Es un lugar especial y entendí que encuentras pocos lugares en el mundo donde coincidan el mar, desierto y montaña; con una energía muy diferente, muy positiva”. Debido a su profesión, Lucía desarrolló la capacidad de conectar con personas e incrementó el deseo de superarse, enfrentar las adversidades y efectuar acciones que le permitieran ayudar.

“In Baja California Sur we have light, water, land, different types of marine life. It is a very special place and I understood that you find few places in the world where sea, desert and mountains coincide; a very different energy, very positive”. Because of her profession, Lucía developed the ability to connect with people and the desire to improve herself, face adversity and implement actions that allowed her to help others.

Además de haber cursado la carrera de derecho, Lucía ha cultivado una trayectoria en el ámbito de los negocios en DelMar Development, lo que le ha permitido conocer el sector empresarial de Los Cabos y empatizar perfectamente con las necesidades en el destino. Desde el año 2015 forma parte de Grupo Madrugadores de Los Cabos: una comunidad conformada por empresarios que buscan mejorar las condiciones de vida en este puerto turístico.

In addition to having pursued a career in law, Lucía has become a business leader at DelMar Development, which has allowed her to get to know the Los Cabos business sector and empathize perfectly with the needs of the community. Since 2015 she has been part of Grupo Madrugadores de Los Cabos: a community made up of businesspeople who seek to improve the living conditions in this tourist destination.

Su equipo de trabajo ideal depende de los objetivos que se persiguen, en toda organización debe existir una personalidad guerrera, que proponga estrategias; alguien sabio, que mantenga el enfoque; el humanista, para que mantenga la paz y el balance entre todos, y por supuesto, que sean trabajadores. Y considera que no siempre la misma persona desempeña el mismo papel, los roles pueden intercambiarse según las circunstancias.

Her ideal work team depends on the goals at hand, in every organization there must be a warrior personality, who proposes strategies; someone wise, who keeps the focus; the humanist, so that peace and balance is maintained among all and, of course, all have to do the work. And she considers that the same person doesn’t always play the same role, their roles can change depending on the circumstances.

“Creo que debemos ser amables y aceptar todo con gratitud. Agradezco lo bueno y lo malo, porque he aprendido. En cierto modo, son lecciones que me han convertido en la persona que soy, por lo que estoy muy feliz”.

“I think we should be kind and accept everything with gratitude. I appreciate the good and the bad because I have learned. In a way, they are lessons that have made me the person that I am, for which I am very happy.”

La familia es uno de los pilares para Lucía. Siente una profunda admiración por su madre y por quienes la formaron hasta convertirse en la mujer plena que es hoy, capaz de apreciar la importancia de las pequeñas cosas y caminar hacia el mañana con entusiasmo y fe.

Family is one of Lucía’s pillars. She has deep admiration for her mother, and those who raised her, to become the accomplished woman she is today; capable of appreciating the importance of the small things and walking towards tomorrow with enthusiasm and faith.

Cada persona que ha sido parte en su vida fue importante para forjar su identidad y la ha ayudado a superarse en todos los aspectos. Cada capitulo que nos compartió sobre su historia personal y profesional, nos hizo darnos cuenta del valor de la gentileza y la gratitud que han regido sus acciones. Ha marcado su trayectoria con disciplina, constancia y respeto.

For Lucía, each person who has appeared in her life has been important in forging her identity and has helped her improve in all aspects. Each chapter that she shared with us about her personal and professional history made us realize that her actions have come from kindness and gratitude, and every step she has taken has been driven by discipline, perseverance, and respect.

DE OASIS, HISTORIA Y PATRIOTISMO En esta ocasión, la aventura fuera de nuestro hogar austral en el final de la tierra nos llevó a más de 600 kilómetros al norte de la cálida península sudcaliforniana, en un recorrido de casi 8 horas y media hasta Heroica Mulegé. Algo que debes saber es que, si deseas seguir la tendencia del viajero moderno y elegir tu tripulación para lanzarte a conocer los tesoros de esta tierra en un Road Trip, Baja California Sur es una gran opción para esta experiencia.

On this occasion, the adventure away from our home at Land’s End on the southernmost area of Baja California Sur took us more than 370 miles north, on a journey of almost 8 and a half hours to Heroica Mulegé. Something you should know is that, if you want to follow the modern traveler trend, Baja California Sur is a great option for a Road Trip experience, with the crew of your choice, to get to know the treasures of this land.

El dinamismo de sus paisajes y la mezcla de colores contrastantes en el horizonte te harán saborear cada tramo de carretera de una manera en la que, sin duda, querrás repetir este estilo de viaje una y otra vez. Nuestra sorpresa comenzó con un vistazo a “El Requesón”, lugar que forma parte de Bahía Concepción. Esta playa de arena blanca es como una gran piscina de agua cristalina, perfecta para conectar con la naturaleza. Un aspecto fascinante es el camino de arena que te conduce hasta una pequeña isla, así como el espectáculo de estrellas centellantes que inundan el cielo cuando cae la noche. Siguiendo el recorrido acompañado de exuberantes paisajes de playa, esteros, montes y cañadas con palmeras, cactáceas y datileras nos adentramos en el corazón de Heroica Mulegé.

HEROICA MULEGÉ El jesuita Juan María de Salvatierra y Vizconti, padre fundador de las misiones de la Alta y Baja California, llegó a esta zona bautizada por los nativos cochimíes como “Barranca Grande de la Boca Blanca” alrededor de 1701, dando pie a que se fundara la tercera misión de Las Californias en 1705 por el padre Juan María Basaldúa; debido a una enfermedad tuvo que abandonar la península, siendo sustituido por Francisco María Piccolo. Se estima que la construcción de la Iglesia de Santa Rosalía de Mulegé, legado arquitectónico misional, concluyó apróximadamente en 1766.

Our delights began with a look at “El Requeson”, at Bahía Concepción. This white sand beach is like a large pool of crystal-clear water, perfect for connecting with nature. A fascinating characteristic of this place is the sand pathway that leads you to a small island, as well as the breathtaking beauty of countless twinkling stars that fill the sky when night falls. As the road trip continued with stunningly beautiful beach landscapes, estuaries, mountains and ravines with cacti, palm and date trees, we entered the heart of Heroica Mulegé.

HEROICA MULEGÉ The Jesuit priest Juan María de Salvatierra y Vizconti, founding father of the missions of Upper and Lower California, arrived around 1701 to this area, which the Cochimí natives called "Barranca Grande de la Boca Blanca", giving rise to the founding of the third mission of Las Californias in 1705 by Father Juan María Basaldúa; who had to leave the peninsula due to illness, being replaced by Francisco María Piccolo. It is estimated that the construction of the Church of Santa Rosalía de Mulegé, which stands today as a legacy of missionary architecture, was completed approximately in 1766.

En la historia de nuestros amables anfitriones también se escribió un osado acontecimiento en 1847 cuando las tropas del general Manuel Pineda Muñoz defendieron fieramente el territorio sudcaliforniano de la invasión estadounidense. Debido a ello, cada 2 de octubre se trasladan los tres poderes públicos del Estado a este lugar que se convierte en capital por un día.

A daring event was written in the local history in 1847, when the troops of General Manuel Pineda Muñoz fiercely defended the Baja California territory from US invasion. This event is commemorated every October 2, when all three branches of the State government move to Heroica Mulegé, which becomes the State capital for a day.

Recorrer las entrañas de esta comunidad te conducirá a un viaje distinto, pues es un territorio repleto de herencia cultural y orgullo sudcaliforniano. El carácter amable del pueblo mulegino es forjado por la noble atmósfera de esta tierra generosa y lo comprobamos en cada lugar que visitamos.

The friendly character of the people of Mulegé has been forged by the noble atmosphere of this generous land and it was confirmed in every place we visited.

CENTRO HISTÓRICO Al llegar fue muy fácil entablar conversación con las personas que estaban en la plaza, entusiasmados nos compartieron información de los lugares que debíamos visitar, así que olvidada quedó la ruta que planeamos antes de salir de Los Cabos al escuchar a quienes se convirtieron en nuestros guías. Nos percatamos entonces que la espontaneidad sería una cualidad que conduciría el itinerario.

JARDÍN CORONA Es la plaza principal y se encuentra rodeada de casonas antiguas construidas de adobe. Parte de estos edificios es el correo, que aún está en servicio y la vivienda del popular poeta e historiador local, Homero Yee Lizardi. También se mantienen casas de otras figuras como el historiador José Alán Gorosave, y las Maestras Higuera, personajes queridos por la comunidad.

HISTORIC CENTER Upon arrival it was very easy to start a conversation with the people in the town square, they enthusiastically shared information about the places we should visit, so the route we planned before leaving Los Cabos was forgotten when we listened to the advice of those who became our guides. We realized then that spontaneity would be the quality that would lead the itinerary.

CORONA GARDEN It is the main square and is surrounded by old adobe houses. One of these old houses is the post office, which is still in service, and the home of the popular local poet and historian, Homero Yee Lizardi. There are also houses of other important members of the local community, such as historian José Alán Gorosave, and the Higuera teachers, all of them characters loved by the community.

HISTORICAL BUILDINGS EDIFICIOS HISTÓRICOS Donde se ubica la Delegación Municipal, antes fue la Escuela Profesor Braulio Rodríguez y donde está el Hotel Hacienda eran en otra época las oficinas de telégrafos, ambas construcciones tienen más de un siglo de antigüedad con muchas historias que escuchar.

EL MIRADOR Se encuentra detrás de la iglesia de Santa Rosalía de Mulegé y desde aquí se observa el Oasis “Carmaañc Galexa”, fuente de vida para los nativos y una importante razón que dio origen a la misión de Mulegé. La energía que emana este lugar ha prevalecido en el tiempo como inspiración para quienes se dan la oportunidad de contemplar este paraje. Tan solo imaginar el impacto que causó en los exploradores que estuvieron hace años, mucho antes que nosotros y que encontraron este oasis de vida en medio del desierto es conmovedor.

The Municipal Delegation is located, where the Professor Braulio Rodríguez School used to be, and the Hacienda Hotel is where the old telegraph offices were. Both buildings are more than a century old and full of stories.

THE VIEWING POINT (MIRADOR) It is located behind the church of Santa Rosalía de Mulegé and from here you can see the “Carmaañc Galexa” Oasis, a source of life for the natives and an important reason that gave rise to the Mulegé mission. Este espacio fungió como cárcel. Se denominaba “cárcel sin puertas” porque, a pesar de que albergaba a los presos del territorio, los que presentaban buena conducta podían salir por el día a trabajar, sin la necesidad de escoltas. Regresaban al caer la noche a este recinto - construido durante el porfiriato - sin intentar fugarse debido a las altas posibilidades de sucumbir ante la hostilidad del ardiente desierto. Actualmente, exhibe algunos elementos donados por la comunidad como instrumentos que usaba la población nativa en su cotidianidad e incluso los restos de un satélite.

This space served as a jail. It was called “prison without doors” because, even though it housed the prisoners of the territory, those who showed good behavior could go out to work for the day, without the need of guards. Prisoners returned at nightfall to the jail - built during the Porfiriato - without trying to escape, due to the possibility of succumbing to the hostile environment of the burning desert around it. Currently, it exhibits some elements donated by the community such as instruments used by the native population in their daily lives and even the remains of a satellite.

Cómo llegar La entrada más cercana a la Cueva de San Borjitas se encuentra en Palo Verde, subdelegación de Mulegé. Para ingresar, es recomendable contactar un guía que oriente en los trámites de acceso. Después te conducirá por aproximadamente una hora y media por una ruta serpenteante de terracería. En nuestra visita, José Evelardo Villavicencio Villavicencio nos guio entre la serranía, a través de la vegetación de matorrales, arboles de mezquites, zalates, higos silvestres y otras plantas endémicas en una aventura ambientada por ranas, aves e insectos que habitan este oasis en medio del desierto.

How to get there The closest entrance to the Cueva de San Borjitas is in Palo Verde, a sub-delegation of Mulegé. To enter, contact a local guide to guide you through the access procedures. Con tan solo 26 años, se desempeña como delegado en su natal Heroica Mulegé desde el 2021. Manuel se muestra orgulloso de sus orígenes, sus padres le inculcaron el valor de la vida en las rancherías de la región, sembrando en él un gran sentido de orgullo sudcaliforniano. “En la comunidad, la mayoría somos parientes o amigos. La tranquilidad es lo que se transmite al turismo aquí. Nos enorgullece que los visitantes sientan esa serenidad. El flujo que tenemos de viajeros como consecuencia de las conexiones aéreas que llegan a Los Cabos nos ha favorecido, llevándonos a fortalecer la intención de rescatar la cultura, costumbres y tradiciones que conforman nuestro pueblo, nuestras raíces”. Para Manuel, la fuerza de un buen equipo de trabajo recae en la unidad y la colaboración, elementos que ha buscado mantener en beneficio de Heroica Mulegé.

Además de ser propietario del restaurante y hotel “Las Casitas”, Francisco tiene un cargo honorífico en el Fideicomiso de Promoción Turística de Comondú—Mulegé, lugar donde nació y del cual comparte felizmente las historias y anécdotas que forjan la identidad de este lugar. “Para mí siempre es grato hablar de mi pueblo, pues tiene una historia muy interesante desde la época del arte rupestre. La misión, que fue la tercera establecida por los jesuitas en la península, la defensa del territorio en la invasión norteamericana más todos los atractivos culturales y naturales”. Otro aspecto que complace a Javier de su localidad es la unidad que se refleja en tres sectores principales: pesca, agricultura y la ganadería. Una de sus recomendaciones a los viajeros es ir a las playas de Bahía Concepción, que a menudo son consideradas como las más bellas de México por la pureza de su ecosistema.

Agustín Casanova Cruz

Originario de Veracruz, Agustín llegó a Baja California Sur para trabajar en la producción de yeso en Isla San Marcos durante su auge, transportando hasta 65 mil toneladas de este mineral agrícola a países en el continente americano y en lejano oriente como Japón. El Valle de Guadalupe también estaba en su lista de clientes — nos dijo al recibirnos amablemente en su casa, junto a Bibiana María Ramírez de Casanova, su esposa —, ya que los viticultores solicitaban reiteradamente este material para controlar la salinidad de los vinos. “Hace más de 30 años llegué a Mulegé y ya soy choyero. Entre las maravillas que hemos descubierto aquí, es que es una tierra maravillosa. Unos de mis pasatiempos adquiridos es la producción de vino”. El destino encaminó a Agustín hacia el mundo del vino cuando uno de sus amigos, que le ayudaban a transportar yeso, le preguntó si no le atraía incursionar en la viticultura tras descubrir su gusto por la vendimia. Comenzó procesando sus vinos en Ensenada, pero con el paso del tiempo y la experiencia estableció contacto con un colega, junto a quien ahora procesa su vino en Todos Santos, convirtiendo a Bodegas y Viñedos del Desierto de Mulegé Casanova en un auténtico vino sudcaliforniano.

Originally from Veracruz, Agustín came to Baja California Sur to work in the production of gypsum on San Marcos Island during its heyday, transporting up to 65 thousand tons of this agricultural mineral to countries in the American continent and in the far East like Japan. En 1976 inició sus estudios en la Escuela Normal Superior del Estado de Baja California Sur en la ciudad de La Paz, donde se formó como docente. Un año antes de concluir su carrera, se le presentó la oportunidad de ejercer como profesor de matemáticas. Para 1979, se mudó a Cabo San Lucas, donde radica hasta la actualidad. Desde la década de los 80’s el profe. Polo ha participado activamente en el campo de la educación, coincidiendo incluso con la maestra Amelia Wilkes, de quien conserva gratos recuerdos. “A partir de 1988 participé en la fundación de la Escuela Secundaria Técnica #16, Escuela Secundaria Técnica #18 y Secundaria Técnica #19 en la colonia Las Palmas. También en el Colegio de Bachilleres del Estado de Baja California Sur, instalándose primero en San José del Cabo, por ser cabecera municipal”. En el año que llegó a Cabo San Lucas, colaboró en un censo que contó 3,500 habitantes en el puerto. El profe. Polo es testigo activo del desarrollo, ha presenciado el crecimiento de la ciudad hasta convertirse en el destino multinacional que es ahora. Ha integrado varios negocios familiares, el más reciente, el restaurante Casasola, muy popular entre los locales.

Los hechos oficiales cuentan que el combate inició el 2 de octubre de 1847, meses después de que fuerzas invasoras norteamericanas tomaran lo que se conocía como Alta California y se apoderaran de San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas y Mulegé.

Un pueblo que se negó a morir Sobre el autor Nacido en Santa Rosalía, el Dr. Juan Manuel Romero Gil es profesor e investigador, egresado de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Azcapotzalco. Concluyó una maestría en Historia Económica y Social en UNAM Iztapalapa y cuenta con un doctorado en historia, obtenido de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UNAM. Además de dedicarse a la docencia, fue fundador de la Licenciatura de Historia en la Universidad de Sonora, y director de la División de Ciencias Sociales. Ha sido acreedor del premio Investigación Histórica “Francisco Javier Clavijero” por la INAH y es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores. Sobre el libro Este libro es resultado de una investigación realizada por el Dr. Romero Gil, donde ahonda en la tradición de la historia minera de Santa Rosalía con la llegada de la compañía El Boleo, realizando un estudio a profundidad en todos los aspectos que formaron parte de esta sociedad desde el año 1885 hasta 1954. Se abordan temas como el Porfiriato, la formación y consolidación de La Compaigne du Boleo, así como factores sociales: población, vida y organización de la comunidad de Santa Rosalía en la época del auge minero. Born in Santa Rosalía, Dr. Juan Manuel Romero Gil is a professor and researcher, graduated from Mexico City’s Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Azcapotzalco. He completed a master's degree in Economic and Social History at UNAM Iztapalapa and has a doctorate in history, obtained from the UNAM Faculty of Philosophy. In addition to dedicating himself to teaching, he was the founder of the History Degree at the University of Sonora, and director of the Social Sciences Division. He has been awarded the "Francisco Javier Clavijero" Historical Research Award by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology History (INAH) and is a member of Mexico’s National Researchers’ System.

This book is the result of Dr. Romero Gil’s research, where he delves into the tradition of mining history in Santa Rosalía with the arrival of the El Boleo company. This book presents an in-depth study of all the aspects that were part of Santa Rosalia’s society from 1885 to 1954. Topics such as the impact of the Porfiriato era and the formation and consolidation of La Compaigne du Boleo are addressed in this book, as well as social factors: population, life and organization of the community of Santa Rosalía at the time of the mining boom. It is a valuable contribution to the history of mining in Baja California Sur.

This year, El Cortés Golf Club was the host of a special meeting, starring Lorena Ochoa Foundation and Los Cabos Children's Foundation, who joined in a Meet & Greet with the athlete from Jalisco to raise funds for both associations. La educación es uno de los temas con los que Lorena Ochoa siempre ha sentido afinidad. Su carisma le ha concedido una sensibilidad especial por la infancia, generando en ella deseos de apoyar a este sector para que obtengan un sistema de bienestar integral.

Lorena Ochoa es considerada como la mejor golfista mexicana de todos los tiempos. Durante su trayectoria profesional obtuvo más de 120 títulos a nivel estatal, nacional e internacional desde 1989, por lo que fue incluida en el Salón de la Fama del Golf Mundial.

“Siempre he estado comprometida con el tema de educación. En Guadalajara tenemos una escuela y también estamos ayudando a diferentes escuelas a nivel nacional. Ingredientes • 12 chiles poblanos • 1 taza de harina de trigo salpimentada • 6 huevos • 60 gr de mantequilla • 1 cebolla grande finamente picada • 3 dientes de ajo finamente picados • 3 tomates sin semilla picados en cubitos • 1 cucharadita de hojas de orégano espolvoreado • 2 chiles serranos verdes picados • 150 gr de mariscos (camarón, langosta, jaiba, etc.) cocidos picados • Aceite Para la salsa • 150 gr de nueces castilla • 50 gr de piñones • 1 taza de crema de leche • 50 gr de queso crema • 60 ml de leche fresca • Pimienta recién molida • Sal

Preparación • Tatemas los chiles y abrirlos cuidadosamente por un lado y limpiarlos • Derretir en un sartén la mantequilla, acitronar ajo y cebolla • Añadir tomate y chile verde, sazonar con sal y pimienta • Incorporar los mariscos, dejar que suelten el hervor y espolvorearlos con orégano • Dejar enfriar • Rellenar los chiles y prenderlos con palillos • Enharinar los chiles, batir las claras de huevo a punto de turrón e incorporar las yemas poco a poco • Calentar aceite en una sartén • Capear los chiles con el huevo y freírlos hasta que tomen un color castaño • Escurrir en papel absorbente • Retirar los palillos • Servirlos bañados con la salsa nuez Para la salsa • Licuar todos los ingredientes hasta obtener una pasta homogénea y espesa. Si se desea obtener una salsa más ligera, agregar más leche. Nota: Es una receta muy popular en Baja California Sur que debe elaborarse con paciencia. Se dice que estos chiles son capeados, pero hay quienes los preparan en frío sin capear con cebolla en escabeche y crema; otras personas prefieren hornearlos y cubrirlos en salsa. Culinary Awards en un proyecto de rescate de la gastronomía sudcaliforniana estará invitando cada edición de Tendencia, El Arte de Viajar a restaurantes ganadores o nominadas para participar en la grabación de un video cocinando una receta del libro Gastronomía de los zafiros de la autora Beatriz Macias. La receta elegida por el chef invitado se incorporará al menú del restaurante, de esta forma pondrá al alcance de sus comensales un platillo representativo de Baja California Sur para mostrar la multiculturalidad gastronómica, la calidad internacional de los alimentos y el servicio en Los Cabos.

Culinary Awards, in a project to rescue the gastronomic traditions of Baja California Sur, will be inviting winning restaurants to participate in every issue of Tendencia, El Arte de Viajar to record a video cooking a recipe from the book Gastronomía de los Zafiros by the author Beatriz Macias. Cabecera del municipio de Mulegé, esta pequeña ciudad, situada entre dos mesetas es cariñosamente conocida por los sudcalifornianos como “Cachanía”. Fue fundada en el siglo XIX, luego de que el entonces presidente de México, Porfirio Díaz, un 7 de julio de 1885 otorgara la concesión Distrito Minero de Santa Águeda a la compañía francesa El Boleo para extracción de cobre. La licencia cubría desde Santa Rosalía hasta Mulegé.

Head of the municipality of Mulegé, this small city, located between two mesas, is affectionately known by the locals from Baja California Sur as “Cachanía”. It was founded in the 19th century, after the then president of Mexico, Porfirio Díaz, granted the Santa Águeda Mining District concession for copper extraction to the French company, El Boleo, on July 7, 1885. Su fundación por el Banco Mirabaud relacionado a la dinastía Rothschild, europeos de origen judeoalemán, marcó el inicio de décadas consagradas al usufructo de yacimientos de cobre y el nacimiento de una sofisticada comunidad.

Its foundation by the Mirabaud Bank, related to the Rothschild dynasty, Europeans of German-Jewish origin, marked the beginning of decades dedicated to the mining of copper deposits and the birth of a sophisticated community.

Se transportaron 900 mil toneladas de cobre mediante un ferrocarril que comprendía aproximadamente 35km y estaba compuesto por al menos 5 locomotoras y más de 100 vagones.

900 thousand tons of copper were transported through a railway that covered approximately 35 km and was made up of at least 5 locomotives and more than 100 wagons.

Se dice que, los primeros pobladores de Santa Rosalía, además de los nativos, fueron indígenas yaquis y europeos traídos para trabajar en la mina bajo la dirección general de Charles Laforgue, quien daba indicaciones desde Paris y eran ejecutadas en tierra sudcaliforniana por el estadounidense William W. Rose.

Fue erigida como “La Casa del Francés” y funcionó así desde 1840 hasta 1863. Es desmontable y una de las estructuras mejor conservadas. Aquí se hospedaban los visitantes que venían a ver los trabajos que hacían los franceses. Al interior, puedes encontrar decoraciones características de esta cultura, así como algunos artículos que te transportan a una época antigua.

• Edificio de la fundición El Boleo

La auténtica belleza de este lugar y el legado de las diferentes culturas que le dieron origen a esta comunidad lo convierten en un destino interesante para visitar, que además posee una abundancia natural que hechiza a los viajeros que se adentran a Baja California Sur y la garantía de que, como dice la expresión popular, la vie est belle!

The wooden building was built in the middle of the 20th century by the El Boleo company. Inside, you will find tools used by the community during the mining boom, as well as a tour of the offices that once operated for this company.

• El Boleo Bakery

This is perhaps the most popular bakery in Baja California Sur and is a must-see, highly recommended by the locals of Santa Rosalía. Its recipe has prevailed since its beginnings in 1901, when it was established as a place to satisfy the longing that the French felt for their country's bread. It uses brick ovens and the most popular breads baked there are: birote, virginia and pitahaya.

In the silence of the mountains of the Baja California Sur desert, between the Sierra de Guadalupe and the Sierra de San Francisco, in the streams, caves and mountains, it is still possible to feel the presence of these men and women returning from a day of hunting, having conversations in the shadow of those caves that shelter their murals.

Esta arteria de mi patria -la península de Baja California- como lo expresó el poeta Fernando Jordán, posee una infinidad de oasis, aproximadamente 184, de los cuales 171 se localizan en Baja California Sur. Dos de esos sublimes oasis se encuentra en San Ignacio y Heroica Mulegé; poblaciones hermanas, con grandes similitudes naturales y culturales, cuentan con atractivos turísticos que integran misiones, arte rupestre y una diversidad de manifestaciones culturales. Heroica Mulegé Pintoresca población, su oasis es un referente que combina con los vestigios de la Misión de Santa Rosalía de Mulegé fundada en noviembre de 1705 por el padre Juan Manuel Basaldúa. En las cercanías se encuentran tres cuevas con pinturas rupestres de enorme importancia. La más cerca es la región de Piedras Pintas, un singular y único paraje donde hay una cantidad increíble de petroglifos. En una pequeña montaña se aprecian diversas figuras de animales marinos y terrestres, que seguramente los antiguos habitantes observaron ya sea por en el océano Pacífico o Golfo de California.

This artery of my country -the peninsula of Baja California- as poet Fernando Jordán put it, has an infinity of oases, approximately 184 of which 171 are in Baja California Sur. Two of those sublime oases are found in San Ignacio and Heroica Mulegé; sister communities, with great natural and cultural similarities, with tourist attractions that integrate missions, cave paintings, oases and a diversity of cultural manifestations. Heroica Mulegé A picturesque community, its oasis is an attraction that is combined with the remains of the Santa Rosalía de Mulegé Mission founded in November 1705 by Father Juan Manuel Basaldúa. Nearby there are three caves with paintings of enormous importance. The closest is the Piedras Pintas region, a singular and unique place where there are an incredible number of petroglyphs. In a small mountain, paintings of various figures of marine and terrestrial animals can be seen, which the ancient inhabitants must have observed either by the Pacific Ocean or the Gulf of California.

La Trinidad es otro maravilloso lugar donde, por el camino, se observan algunos ranchos que aún practican el oficio de la talabartería y la cría de chivas. Atesora una zona interesante de pinturas rupestres. En La Cueva de San Borjitas casi todas las pinturas se encuentran en techo rocoso y muestran hombres de pie con los brazos extendidos, son muy famosas en la península por sus impresionantes dimensiones, ya que miden aproximadamente 4m de altura y 30cm de ancho. Desde la entrada hacia el fondo son alrededor de 20m. El poema “El Mito Posible” de Raúl Antonio Cota ilustra parte de este Reino Cochimí a través de sus ricas estrofas: … Creo en la California que convino a soñar al europeo del siglo XVI…de los enigmas: las pinturas…torsos y manitas… vigilancia de los acantilados ...en el atónico ajetreo de cardúmenes y la altivez espinosa de los cactus. Creo en la California que construyó templos…que ejerce poder en los signos del mar y el desierto…en la retórica que ejerce el silencio del ranchero californio, en su lenguaje anafórico…creo en la California la del mito… La Trinidad is another wonderful place where, along the way, you can see some ranches that still practice the trade of saddlery and raise goats. It also has an interesting area of cave paintings. In La Cueva de San Borjitas almost all the paintings are found on a rocky ceiling and show men standing stretching their arms to their sides, they are very famous in the peninsula for their impressive dimensions, as they are approximately 12 feet tall and 1 foot wide; and there are about 20 yards from the entrance to the bottom. The poem “The Possible Myth” by Raúl Antonio Cota illustrates part of this Cochimí Kingdom through its rich stanzas: … I believe in the California that the 16th century European dreamed of…of enigmas: the paintings…torsos and small hands…guard of the cliffs…in the oddly quiet bustle of shoals and the prickly haughtiness of cacti. I believe in the California that built temples…that exerts power in the signs of sea and desert…in the rhetoric exerted by the silence of the California rancher, in his anaphoric language…I believe in the California of myth…

TIERRA PERFUMADA - SCENTED SOIL

A WOMAN FROM LA PAZ IN PARIS Revisando las redes sociales de páginas josefinas, nos encontramos con un artículo dedicado a un restaurante de origen sudcaliforniano en Paris. Nos dimos a la tarea investigarlo y descubrimos quien está detrás del restaurante “La Choya”. Creció soñando con aventuras y viajes, una niña paceña con un arraigado orgullo por su ciudad natal, ella es Ibeth Canseco Rodríguez, diseñadora de interiores. A los 22 años decidió viajar a Guadalajara para estudiar una segunda carrera en gastronomía. Quería organizar eventos y dedicarse a ambas profesiones, haciendo una fusión de conocimientos. Sus prácticas fueron en un restaurante italiano, los dueños eran nativos del país; la madre le compartió sus recetas familiares y secretos para una buena cocina, ella la animó a trasladarse a Europa; preferiblemente a Italia, pero los trámites eran algo complicados por lo que decidió buscar otras opciones de viaje para expandir sus estudios. 84

Reviewing the social networks of pages from San José del Cabo, we found an article dedicated to a restaurant from Baja California Sur. The editorial team took on the task of researching the site and what they discovered was cause for great pride and gave way to a behind the scenes of "La Choya". She grew up dreaming of adventures and travels, a girl from La Paz with a deeprooted pride for her hometown, she is Ibeth Canseco Rodriguez, interior designer. At 22 years of age, she decided to travel to Guadalajara to pursue a second career with a degree in Gastronomy. She wanted to organize events and use both degrees to create special events. Her internship was in an Italian restaurant, owned by an Italian couple. The wife shared her family recipes and her secrets for good cooking, it was she who encouraged Ibeth to move to Europe; she recommended Ibeth to go to Italy, but the paperwork was somewhat complicated, so Ibeth decided to look for other travel options to expand her studies.

IBETH CANSECO RODRIGUEZ DISEÑADORA DE INTERIORES En agosto del 2010 se graduó como chef y en noviembre viajó a París, Francia. El plan era quedarse un año. Cuatro meses después, la “Ciudad del Amor ” hizo lo suyo, conoció a un francés y se casaron, con el tiempo la familia creció.

In August 2010 she graduated as chef and in November of the same year she traveled to Paris, France. The plan was to stay for a year. Four months later, the “City of Love” did its thing, she met a Frenchman and got married, over time the family grew.

Durante su vida en Francia, Ibeth extrañaba a su familia, amigos y pasar días en la playa. Ese sentimiento la alentó a abrir un espacio culinario que honrara sus raíces. Esto fue posible gracias al incondicional apoyo de su esposo.

During her life in France, Ibeth missed her family, friends, and spending days at the beach. That feeling encouraged her to open a culinary space that would honor her roots. This was possible thanks to her husband’s unconditional support.

La alegría de cocinar para otras personas y la idea de tener su propio negocio fue su principal motivación. Dedicó dos años a la planeación, organización y conceptos creativos. Ahora, cerca del fluyente río Sena, se encuentra su restaurante “La Choya” en el distrito 13 de París, abierto al público desde hace cuatro años. El nombre es una referencia local coloquial a Baja California Sur, que también presenta el concepto de “Yo soy Choyera”, es decir, una persona que nació entre la variedad de cactáceas de la península y que, de alguna manera, forman parte de su personalidad. La inspiración de cocina fueron los carritos de burritos y hot dogs ( jates como los conocen los paceños) y las recetas de su abuela. En el menú encontrarás diferentes platillos coloridos como: burritos, quesadillas, ensaladas y postres adaptados con los ingredientes de la región. El ambiente es bastante fresco con plantas naturales, colores vivos de su patria, toques de rosa, amarillo, verde, la fachada es azul que representa las playas, y muebles rústicos. Los visitantes de La Choya tienen a la mano libros y cuadros de artistas sudcalifornianos, como de la grafista Karla Tuna, amiga de la chef, y también comparten gratas pláticas sobre su terruño que incitan a hacer turismo a Baja California Sur. Algunos de ellos ya viajaron a la península y cuentan anécdotas de lo impresionante que es presenciar los colores entre el mar y el desierto. Ibeth está muy orgullosa de trasladar una parte de su cultura a tierras parisinas e inspirar a más “choyeros” a seguir sus sueños, tanto en México como más allá de sus fronteras.

The joy of cooking for other people and the idea of having her own business were her main motivations. It took two years of planning, organization, and creative concepts. Now, her restaurant "La Choya" is in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, near the flowing waters of the Seine River, and has been open to the public for four years. Its name is a colloquial local reference to Baja California Sur, which also presents the concept of "I am Choyera", that is, a person who was born among the variety of cacti native to this state and which, somehow are part of her personality. Her kitchen is inspired by the burrito and hot dog carts (jates as people from La Paz know them) of her hometown and by her grandmother's recipes. On the menu you will find different colorful dishes such as: burritos, quesadillas, bowls, salads, and desserts adapted with ingredients from the region. Its ambiance is quite fresh with natural plants, bright colors from Ibeth’s homeland, touches of pink, yellow, green, the facade is turquoise blue representing the beaches of Baja California Sur, and the furniture is rustic. Visitors to La Choya have an opportunity to enjoy books and paintings by artists from Baja California Sur, such as graphic artist Karla Tuna, a friend of the chef, and they also share pleasant talks about Ibeth’s homeland that encourage tourism to Baja California Sur. Some of them have already traveled to the peninsula and share anecdotes about how impressive it is to witness the colors between the sea and the desert. Ibeth is very proud to transfer a portion of her culture to Parisian lands and inspire more Choyeros to follow their dreams, both in Mexico and beyond its borders.

POBLACIÓN Y TRABAJO 1885-1920 Tener una población estable en Santa Rosalía fue la mayor dificultad a la que se enfrentó la compañía francesa El Boleo. En el año de 1885 cuando Rothschild obtuvo la concesión de los once fundos mineros, la población estaba compuesta por 250 trabajadores, hombres solos: la mayoría yaquis, 80 franceses y cinco nativos de Guaymas. Los extranjeros vivían en tiendas de campaña junto a las minas. Los yaquis en barracas que ellos construían.

UN POCO DE HISTORIA… A LITTLE HISTORY…

Las poblaciones aledañas, San Ignacio y Mulegé, se redujeron significativamente en el último tercio del siglo XIX debido al azote de fuertes epidemias de viruela y sarampión; lo que prácticamente diezmó la mano de obra en la zona. A pesar de la situación, en 1885 se inició intempestivamente un proceso de contratación en las costas vecinas de Sonora y Sinaloa, asunto que con altas y bajas fue ininterrumpido hasta 1903. La tarea emprendida en 1885 por el capital francés, que consistió en la construcción de un pueblo y modernizar de la industria minera, dio lugar a la inmigración de las comunidades campesinas de Jalisco, Sonora y Sinaloa.

POPULATION AND WORK 1885-1920 The greatest difficulty faced by the French company El Boleo was having a stable population in Santa Rosalía. El desarrollo de la minería fue tan importante que la población creció enormemente; pasó de 250 habitantes en 1885 a 4.000 trabajadores en 1887 y se distribuyeron por toda la zona. A partir de 1900, la minería sirvió para sustentar a una población de más de 8.000 personas, incluidos 200 europeos.

Como se ha señalado antes, el mayor reto para la Compañía El Boleo era proveerse de fuerza de trabajo, considerando la ubicación geográfica del mineral, ligada a las condiciones climáticas y la falta de área cultivable capaz de producir bienes de consumo necesario para alimentar a los trabajadores.

POBLACIÓN DE LA TERCERA EDAD ALREDEDOR DE 1960

Durante la década de los 60’s, hubo un incremento en la población de la tercera edad. Entonces se recordó al número de personas que se mudaron a Santa Rosalía para trabajar en El Boleo. Mario Mengheni, el párroco a cargo de la iglesia se percató que muchos ancianos carecían de un hogar digno, donde pudieran vivir cómodamente la última etapa de su vida, quienes en su momento fueron el motor de la industria minera. Un grupo de religiosas y personas de la comunidad buscaron un sitio que les sirviera de refugio. Al principio residieron en casa de Ángeles Lugo. Después se mudaron a una construcción ubicada en la Capilla de Fátima debido al incremento de residentes. Cuando se requirió un espacio más grande, se trasladaron el 5 de diciembre de 1964 al sitio en el que permanecen en la actualidad. El grupo se constituyó legalmente el 1 de enero de 1963 como una organización benéfica.

During the 1960s, there was an increase in the elderly population. Then the number of people who moved to Santa Rosalía to work at El Boleo was recalled. Mario Mengheni, the parish priest in charge of the church, realized that many elderly people, who at the time were the engine that drove the mining industry, lacked a decent home, where they could live comfortably the last stage of their lives. HOGAR DEL ANCIANO SAN MARTÍN DE PORRES 2022 Desde aquellos años alrededor de 1960, personas de la tercera edad encuentran asistencia integral, compañía en un ambiente familiar, armonioso y cariñoso donde conviven en paz y son atendidos en materia de salud, hospedaje y alimentación. La atención es proporcionada por voluntarios. Supimos de este lugar a través del padre Jorge Ramírez López, con quien intercambiamos correos electrónicos y nos comprometimos a visitarlos cuando tuviéramos un recorrido por Mulegé para conocer su labor y apoyarlos desde Los Cabos. Dar una vuelta por Santa Rosalía para visitar el Hogar del Anciano San Martin de Porres nos dio la oportunidad de valorar el trabajo de las personas que participan en esta importante causa. Trasmiten un compromiso que impulsa y anima la vida misma, inspirando a la población a preocuparse por las necesidades del adulto mayor y dando el primer paso para brindarles una óptima calidad de vida. La amable Dora Patricia Moreno Martínez, fue nuestro contacto, ella supervisa el área administrativa. Going around Santa Rosalía to visit the Home for the Elderly gave us the opportunity to value the work of the people who participate in this important cause.
