This institute does not encourage the use of mail consultation for those who have access to a Tibetan doctor graduated from Men-Tsee-Khang. Therefore we would recommend patients seek help directly from a properly trained medical doctor who uses the traditional Tibetan diagnostic procedures like reading the patient’s pulse, urine analysis and interrogations. Owing to numerous suggestions and input received over the years from patients who hold strong trust and belief in our medical system and insist that this system remains the last hope of their recovery, we feel the necessity and responsibility to provide a mail consultation facility to fulfill their wishes. It is very necessary to provide us with the following information: Your name (in capital) Gender Age Clear Address Case History and treatments As and when the above information is received, senior doctors will review the personal case. Thereafter, a reply will be sent to the individual patient informing the recommendations of the physician. If pills are prescribed then remedies will be sent after the receipt of the payment through the postal system either by Registered parcel, Courier, Speed Post or what ever kind of post facility are applicable to that particular region or country. (ETMS) Programme and a parallel Astro. Physics course were held at Men-Tsee-Khang College from 15 to 27 June, 2015. The programme was preceded by a warm opening ceremony in the presence of the

professional science translators from the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, heads of all cultural departments, and Men-Tsee-Khang medical and astro-science students attended the ceremony. The Emory Tibet Medical Sciences Programme, a three-year collaborative programme conducted by Emory University School of Medicine and Men-Tsee-Khang College, is designed to impart a mainstream biomedical science education to the students of MenTsee-Khang, complementing their traditional medical education. The programme is jointly funded by Dr. Raymond Schinazi, Emory University School of Medicine, the Emory Tibet Partnership, and MenTsee-Khang. The first course group started in the summer of 2013. The esteemed guest professors from Emory University School of Medicine were Dr. John William (Bill) Eley, Executive Associate Dean, Medical Education and Student Affairs, and Professor, Department of Hematology and Oncology; Dr. Men-Tsee-Khang

April-June 2015 Edward (Ted) Pettus, Professor of Anatomy at the Department of Cell Biology; Dr. Jonathan Flacker, M.D., AGSF, Professor, Department of Medicine and Chief, Section of Geriatrics and Gerontology, Emory; and Dr. Mehul Tejani, M.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics. It was, indeed, a great honour to have the Dean of Emory University School of Medicine, Dr. Bill Eley as one of the faculties, to welcome the return of Dr. Ted Pettus for the third consecutive year and Dr. Johnathan (Nathan) Flacker for the second year, and to greet Dr. Mehul Tejani for the first time. In addition, we were extremely fortunate for the expertise of Mr. Sukjit Singh Sidhu, former Squadron Leader and experienced physics and mathematics teacher at various schools around Dharamshala including the Upper TCV School, as the guest resource person for the Astro Physics course. Dr. Bill and Dr. Ted presided over the first session, which focused on the cardiovascular system, the gastrointestinal system, and

metabolism. The session was a lively and enriching learning experience for our students, deepening their knowledge and providing precise explanations for many of the abstract, yet logical concepts of traditional Tibetan Medicine. The resource persons for the second session, Dr. Nathan and Dr. Mehul, taught the principles of preventing and treating chronic and infectious diseases. They enthusiastically trained the participants to strengthen their skills in making differential diagnoses through the use of an interactive format that encouraged participation in exercises involving clinical case studies. Overall to date, the three-year program is providing a highly effective learning experience that expands the participants’ horizon of knowledge and equips them with skills that will broaden their aptitude in their future medical practice. Along with this year’s ETMS programme, an Astro. Physics Course was offered to the astro-science students. As was requested, Mr. Sukjit Singh Sidhu willingly designed a comprehensive two-week programme. The topics covered were units of measurement, kinematics, ray optics, oscillation and waves, the universe, earth science, and communication systems. Using an inspired integrative approach, the topics discussed drew a parallel understanding of each subject from Tibetan tradition. Each session ended with an exam and a closing ceremony. During the closing programme, the 3

Research in Tibetan medicines, focusing on their efficacy in accordance with Western scientific methods, has been initiated by the Research and Development Department of MenTsee-Khang and is showing promising results.

In 2011, a joint research collaboration on Tibetan medicine for the treatment of cancer was carried out by Dr. Susan Bauer-Wu from the University of Virginia and professionals from Emory University and Men-Tsee-Khang. This led to preparation of an original article entitled “Tibetan Medicine for cancer: An Overview and Review of Case Studies, which was published in the journal, Integrative Cancer Therapies by Sage Publication. The article was published online on 10 September, 2014 and the hard copy version (Volume 13, Number 6, 502-512) was made available in November, 2014. This study was the result of the collaborative effort of a team led by Dr. Susan Bauer-Wu, PhD (University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA) and including Tenzin Lhundup, Kachupa (Men-Tsee-Khang, Tibetan Medical & Astro Institute, Dharamsala, India); Tawni Tidwell, MA (Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA); Tenzin Lhadon, Menrampa (Men-Tsee-Khang, Tibetan Medical & Astro Institute, Dharamsala, India); Chikako Ozawa-de Silva, PhD (Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA); Jamyang Dolma, Menrampa (Men-Tsee-Khang, Salugara Branch Clinic, Salugara, India); Pema Dorjee, Menrampa (Men-Tsee-Khang, Tibetan Medical & Astro Institute, Dharamsala India); Dorjee Rapten Neshar, Menrampa (Men-TseeKhang, Bengaluru Branch Clinic, Tibetan Medical Centre, Bangalore, India); Rigzin Sangmo, Menrampa (Men-Tsee-Khang, Tibetan Medical & Astro Institute, Dharamsala, India); 5

Tibetan Medicine for Cancer: An Overview and Review of Case Studies Abstract Introduction: Tibetan medicine (TM) is a whole systems medical approach that has had growing interest in the West. However, minimal research, particularly with cancer, has been conducted. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of TM and describe a clinical case review study to obtain preliminary evidence of TM’s safety and effect on patients treated for cancer or

April-June 2015 hematologic disorders. Methods: A retrospective case review was conducted in India and cases met the following inclusion criteria: (a) confirmed diagnosis of cancer or hematologic disorder by standard Western biomedical diagnostic tests, (b) either treated exclusively with TM or received insufficient Western treatment followed by TM and (c) were in remission or had stable disease at least 2 years after start of TM. Results: Three cases were identified, 1 solid tumor and 2 hematologic diseases: Case1—poorly to moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of the stomach, positive lymph nodes

The year 2016 will be a watershed year in the history of Men-Tsee-Khang. We celebrate 100 years of establishing Men-Tsee-Khang by the Great 13th Dalai Lama in Lhasa, Tibet, 55 years of re-establishing Men-Tsee-Khang by the Great 14th Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India, and 320 years of establishing the Chagpori Medical College in Lhasa, Tibet by the Great 5th Dalai Lama. Starting from Wednesday, March 23, 2016, we will have several outreach and commemorative events, both in India and outside. To solicit active participation from all our students, wagers and staff, we appealed to our students to work 100 hours each without pay in our Pharmacy Department or Herbal Research and Production Department. We appealed to our staff and wagers to contribute 100 hours’ pay for the MenTsee-Khang’s Centenary Celebration. So far, they have contributed over 4.8 million Rupees, for which we thank very much, and more are coming in. Also, our well wishers in India, and abroad, mostly patients, are sending in donations. No doubt, our outreach programs, especially those in foreign countries, will entail huge expenses.
