MEN-TSEE-KHANG OBSERVES WORLD DIABETES DAY Research & Development Department, Men-Tsee-Khang organized diabetes awareness campaign on 14 November keeping the current global theme “Healthy Living and Diabetes� in focus. World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on November 14. This campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its member associations. In response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes poses, the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization created World Diabetes Day in 1991 and became an official United Nations Day in 2007.
New branch clinic opened at kalaburagi, South India on 14 November, 2014
This day is celebrated on November 14, to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1921. As healthy eating begins with breakfast, whole wheat bread with honey and milk tea sweetened by sugar free sweetener was served to college students on the ocassion. Besides, distributing bookmarks carrying messages on diet advice; poster advertisement; and
an informative lecture event on the subject were organized at Men-Tsee-Khang college hall. Mr. Dranyi Tsegyal, Secretary of the Health Department, CTA was the chief guest on the occasion. He said that Diabetes can also be life-threatening disease in our society and hence organizing regular awareness programmes or events is important. Dr. Rigzin Sangmo, head of the Department gave a brief introductory speech on how and why the world diabetes day was created. Astro. College, Men-Tsee-Khang and Dr. Tenzin Lhundup, Delek Hospital shared their expertise on the theme “Management of Diabetes and healthy living� from the perspective of traditional Tibetan medicine and allopathic medicine respectively. Around 200 people including doctors, astrologers, staff and students of Men-Tsee-Khang and media personnel participated in the event. Mr. Tsering Phuntsok, Registrar of Men-Tsee-Khang presented souvenirs to both the speakers and the event concluded with a thank you speech by Dr. Rigzin Sangmo, head of the department. Men-Tsee-Khang would like to thank the Dept. of Health (CTA) for sponsoring the event. MEN-TSEE-KHANG OPENS A NEW BRANCH CLINIC Men-Tsee-Khang opened its 59 branch clinic at Kalaburagi formerly known as Gulbarga in Karnataka State, South India. The new clinic inaugural function at Khuba Plot commenced on 14 November, 2014 at 10 a.m. with the traditional consecration ceremony and Medicine Buddha prayer by four monks from Drepung Loseling monastery. of the clinic including the staff. More than 350 people attended the ceremony including high priest from different religions,
local guests and public and Tibetans residing in the area. Tea and snacks were served to all the guests and the ceremony concluded by 12 in the afternoon. The clinic was opened at 2 p.m. and around 15 patients attended the Doctor. Prior to the inauguration on 13 November a press release was called for to announce and inform the purpose of the opening of the new branch clinic at Khuba plot. The press release was attended by the Director of Men-Tsee-Khang; Mr. Allam Prabhu, sponsor of the clinic; South Zone Manager and the Chief Resident Doctor. The
Director informed the reporters that Tibetan herbal medicine can cure most of the disorders which allopathic medicines cannot. He also gave a brief introduction on the history and development of MenTsee-Khang in Tibet and in-exile in India. OUTREACH PROGRAMME South America Outreach tour to Buenos Aires, Argentina and Santiago, Chile was held from 17 Oct to 21 Nov, 2014. The tour was led by Dr. Tenzin Yeshi, Research & Development Department; Dr. Norchung, Documentation & Publication Department and Kalsang Dechen, assistant to the Registrar, Men-Tsee-Khang. The tour in Buenos Aires, Argentina was organized by Kagyud Tekchen Choling Center. Lama Rinchen Khandro and Lama Sangye Dorjee directors of the center helped in making this visit possible. On 18 Oct, at Funcacion Salud Dr. Norchung gave a talk on Ageing in Healthy way and Dr. Tenzin Yeshi spoke on Indigestion is the root cause of cancer and all internal disorders. There were around 300 people who participated in the talks. Dr. Norchung gave a presentation on holistic approach of Tibetan medicine and the role of dietary behaviour in maintaining good health at Kagyu Tekchen Choling center on 20 Oct. Tibetan medicine where around 50 people attended and on 23 Oct Dr. Tenzin Yeshi gave a talk on longevity and physical & mental well being in traditional Tibetan medical system at the Medical Association of Argentina. Dr. Norchung gave a talk on holistic approach to Tibetan medicine and the role of dietary behaviour in maining good health on 28 Oct at the Avellaneda Hospital and at Kagyu Tekchen Choling both the doctors spoke on which are the illnesses that the Tibetan medicine can offer a better result and around 40 people participated. On 29 Oct at the Pinero Hospital Dr. Norchung gave a presentation on caring at the final stage of life according to Tibetan medicine and more than 30 people attended where the curious participants asked questions on consciousness and mind. On 1 Nov the doctors spoke on three topics: diagnostic methods of Tibetan medicine, indigestion is the root cause of cancer and all internal disorders by Dr. Tenzin Yeshi and caring of mental illness in Tibetan medicine by Dr. Norchung at the Druk Manjushri Center. The rest of days were arranged for the interested public to experience traditional Tibetan pulse diagnosis. Question and answer session followed after each presentation. In Buenos Aires and Rosario (Argentina) the doctors provided traditional Tibetan system of health care to around 83 people. The team then visited Santiago, Chile from 6 to 20 Nov, 2014. Dr. Luis Pedreros, director of Latin
American School of Traditional Chinese Medicine hosted the programme. Dr. Tomas Diaz and Hugo Cisternas Ingeniero assisted in translation of the presentation and workshops by Dr. Tenzin Yeshi and Dr. Norchung during the stay. From 8 to 9 November the doctors gave courses for two days on an introduction to traditional Tibetan medicine. On 15 and 16 the doctors gave workshop and practical demonstration on Massage. There were more than 50 participants for the courses. There were two sessions each for the both the doctors in a day. Besides the course and workshop, around 30 interested people came to experience the traditional Tibetan system of health care during the remaining days of stay in Chile. In addition, Kalsang Dechen, assistant to Registrar helped in the display of Sorig herbal health supplements during the tour. On the whole the tour to South American countries was successful. Men-Tsee-Khang would like to thank the organizers, members of the Kagyud Tekchen Choling, Druk Manjushri Center, and Latin American School of Traditional Chinese medicine for their unwavering support during the outreach programme. 3
