Mail/Distant Consultation
Men-Tsee-Khang does not encourage the use of mail/Distant consultation for those who have access to a Tibetan doctor graduated from MenTsee-Khang. Therefore, we would recommend patients seek help directly from a properly trained medical doctor who uses the traditional Tibetan diagnostic procedures like reading the patient’s pulse, urine analysis and interrogations. Owing to numerous suggestions and input received over the years from patients who hold strong trust and belief in our medical system and insist that this system remains the last hope of their recovery, we feel the necessity and responsibility to provide a mail/distant consultation facility to fulfill their wishes. It is very necessary to provide us with the following information: Your name (in capital), Gender, Age, Clear Address, Email ID, Case History and treatments. As and when the above information is received, senior doctors will review the personal case. Thereafter, a reply will be sent to the individual patient informing the recommendations of the physician. If pills are prescribed then remedies will be sent after the receipt of the payment through the postal system either by Registered parcel, Courier, Speed Post or what ever kind of post facility are applicable to that particular region or country. out as a well-integrated healing system” said the Director. Shri. Thakur Singh Bharmouri speaking on the occasion said it gave him great pleasure to be there with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and to participate in the Men-TseeKhang celebration. “Today Tibetan medicine is well known, not only in India but in many countries”. He recalled the first time he came to Dharamsala in 1982, visited Dr. Yeshi Dhonden, received treatment from him, and was relieved. He said that Tibetan medical treatment, introduced in Himachal and to the rest of the world, is effective.
Jan - Mar 2016
News He informed that he will take the suggestion of His Holiness to host an international seminar where several types of healing systems, such as the Tibetan, Irani, Yunani, and Ayurveda, will come together. Himachal is rich in medicinal herbs and we should exercise our efforts to utilize judiciously what Mother Nature has provided to benefit humanity.
He said that everyone worked hard and with determination in the initial stages, a humble beginning that has now brought results. However, when he comes across chronically sick people in the settlements he wonders if something hasn’t been neglected. Our medical tradition is an incorporation of the Tibetan, Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Yunani systems. His Holiness stressed that our traditional healing practitioners should meet with practitioners of these traditions, discuss and exchange views, take other findings into account, and determine what we can contribute and learn from them. His Holiness advised that “… you should not carry on as you are and be satisfied with it, but should instead discuss, examine according to scientific analysis, and find ways to resolve things and advance forward”.
Shri. Karan Singh said it was a pleasure and an honour to be there in the presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He said that he went through the literature and was greatly impressed with Tibetan medicine. His government is interested to attach Tibetan medicine with Ayurveda. “It is a privilege to be here and speak in front of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. His Holiness has transformed the minds of the people of the Himalayan region and the people of the world through his message of love and compassion” said Shri. Ravi Thakur. He said that the Ayurveda Minister is persistent to develop Men-Tsee-Khang and Sowa Rigpa and doing his level best to open an outlet in Shimla and Delhi, while the Forest Minister consented 23% of land to develop and grow herbal plants in Lahaul Spiti”. The event then continued as His Holiness the Dalai Lama presented souvenirs to the Indian and Russian dignitaries. Dr. Yeshi Dhonden, former Personal Physician to His Holiness the Dalai Lama was Men-Tsee-Khang

Dr. Jamyang Tashi, Head of Pharmacy Department, was awarded a certificate for successful completion of the Tso-thel preparation. His Holiness the Dalai Lama then addressed the gathering by greeting all who were present. CONFERENCES/SEMINARS International Conference on Tibetan Medicine, Dharamsala In conjunction with the Centennial Anniversary, the Men-Tsee-Khang Research and Development Men-Tsee-Khang
Jan - Mar 2016 (R&D) Department organized an International Conference on Tibetan Medicine with the theme, “Unlocking the truth of Tibetan medicine”, at TMAI College hall in Dharamsala on 24 March 2016. The inaugural function was attended by the Chief Guest, Honorable Health Minister of CTA, Dr. Tsering Wangchuk; Mr. Tsering Tashi Phuri, Director of Men-Tsee-Khang; Dr. Tsewang Tamdin, CMO and Chairman of the High level Medical & Astro. Council; speakers, guests and the participants. The conference started at 9.30 am with the lighting of the butter lamp by the Chief Guest, followed by observation of a minute’s silence to pay homage to the Tibetan Freedom Martyrs. The event then continued with chanting of the Yuthok prayer while tea and sweet rice were served. The Director of Men-Tsee-Khang, Mr Tashi Tsering Phuri, stressed that, “Since the various research papers are of due importance, the R&D Dept. should organize these international conferences annually or twice a year in the near future”. Furthermore, he mentioned that “The global pharmaceutical companies and health organizations are imposing strict regulations on the use of mercury. So far 130 countries have agreed to sign the bill to ban mercury use, and last year, even India agreed to restrict and ban mercury use over the next 6 consecutive years. At present, it is difficult to come to the conclusion of how this issue will unfold, but nevertheless, it is evident that we have to accept and go parallel with the legal regulations on mercury use of the host country.” In
addition,
he
stated
that
“Nationwide AYUSH practitioners continue to show strong dismay over the Indian Government’s decision to agree to the banning mercury use in India. After going through a process of detoxification, mercury is used in medicine, and its great efficacy and benefits have been experienced for many centuries. Even His Holiness the Dalai Lama, when he was 78, shared an anecdote that His Holiness is perfectly healthy with the consumption of Tibetan Precious pills, and did not witness any toxicity related to mercury being used in Tibetan precious pills. Dr. Rigzin Sangmo, head of the R&D Dept., gave an introductory speech with a brief history about the evolution of Tibetan Medicine and its current status in the global health care system. She discussed the Department’s research work and shared evidence of the positive outcome of Tibetan medicine in the treatment of chronic disorders such as diabetes, cancer, hepatitis B, hypertension, and gastrointestinal disorders. Expressing concern over the challenges that lie ahead, she emphasized the need for more rigorous and sustainable research work in Tibetan Medicine. The committee received 16 papers, out of which five articles most relevant to the conference were selected. The Conference had a total of 215 participants from 10 different countries. The Chief Guest of the Inaugural function, Health Kalon, Dr. Tsering Wangchuk, noted that “MenTsee-Khang has been continuously working hard to serve and uplift the health of Tibetans at large through Tibetan Medicine”. Although the allopathic clinics run by the CTA and the Tibetan Medicine clinics by Men-Tsee-Khang established in each Tibetan Settlement are 4
News managed independently, the patients themselves have integrated and sought the benefits from both systems. In addition, he mentioned that the Health Department has a vision to integrate the two systems in each settlement, for example, by organizing workshops on investigative and diagnostic methods of Western medicine for the practicing doctors of Tibetan Medicine. The first speaker at the conference, Dr. Sarah Sallon from Hadassah Natural Medical Research Center, spoke on the topic, “Is Mercury in Tibetan Medicine toxic? Clinical, neurocognitive and biochemical results of a cross sectional study”. She explained that this collaborative project with Men-Tsee-Khang was successful in studying mercury or Tsothel in Tibetan medicine through scientific research as a non-toxic, safe component in nature. Dr. Cecile Vennos, head of scientific affairs of Padma Inc., described her article entitled “From Medical tradition to Traditional Medicine: A Tibetan formula in the European framework”. Mr. Dziugas Meskelevicius of Vilnius University, Lithuania spoke on the topic, “Traditional Tibetan medicine as a potential source of agents for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme: A controlled, cell culture-based pilot study”, a scientific study done in collaboration with Men-Tsee-Khang. Dr. Namgyal Qusar, presented his abstract on the title “Weight reduction in patients with Coronary Artery Disease: Comparison of traditional Tibetan Medicine and Western diet”. Dr. Marie T Nicolas from France, who is a researcher as well as an educationist was the last speaker. She shared her concern about the common problems of linking different fields of knowledge seen while studying and teaching modern scientific Men-Tsee-Khang
Jan - Mar 2016 education in developed countries. The inaugural function concluded with the chanting of prayers for the prosperity of Tibetan Medicine and Astro-science, followed by lunch. The chairpersons of the Conference were: Dr. Tsewang Tamdin, Chief Medical Officer and Chairman of the High level Medical and Astro. Council of Men-Tsee-Khang; Dr. Lobsang Tsering, Epidemiologist consultant, Dept. of Health, Central Tibetan Administration, Dharamsala; and Dr. Tsetan Dorjee Sadutshang, Chief Medical Officer, Tibetan Delek Hospital, Dharmasala. The chairpersons introduced the speakers who gave 20-minutes presentations with 10 minutes for discussion. The Valedictory function started at 5.35 p.m. after the arrival of the Chief Guest, Dr. Prof. Madam B. Tsering, member of Tibetan Parliament in exile and the Director of the Dalai Lama Institute of Higher Studies located on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The Chief Guest distributed certificates and souvenirs with the traditional scarf to the chairpersons, speakers, personal physicians of His Holiness, foreign participants, and ex-MTK participants. She lauded all the speakers for their interesting presentations backed by scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of Tibetan Medicine. She also spoke on her personal experience with Tibetan Medicine treatment in general, and how Tibetan medicine has offered a good quality of life to some of her known cancer patients, in particular. The conference concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. SonamWangmo, R&D Dept., followed by chanting of a melodious

We celebrate 100 years of establishing Men-TseeKhang by the Great 13th Dalai Lama in Lhasa, Tibet, 55 years of re-establishing Men-Tsee-Khang by the Great 14th Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India, and 320 years of establishing the Chagpori Medical College in Lhasa, Tibet by the Great 5th Dalai Lama. Starting from Wednesday, March 23, 2016, we will have several outreach and commemorative events, both in India and outside. To solicit active participation from all our students, wagers and staff, we appealed to our students to work 100 hours each without pay in our Pharmacy Department or Herbal Research and Production Department. We appealed to our staff and wagers to contribute 100 hours’ pay for the Men-Tsee-Khang’s Centenary Celebration. So far, they have contributed over 5.1 million Rupees, for which we thank very much, and more are coming in. Also, our well wishers in India, and abroad, mostly patients, are sending in donations.
